1334:Giving Sentient Beings the Best

Prostrations to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the Lineage gurus, Dharma Protector Achi, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Greetings, fellow believers and Dharma brothers. I am Xu Xiu Lian from Group Four, and my Dharma name is Hui Mei Drolma. I am grateful to Rinpoche for bestowing me the opportunity to hereby praise the guru’s merits as well as his help towards my parents and me, and to repent the evil karma I have committed from accumulated past lifetimes.

Through the introduction of Dharma brother Jiang from Group Six, I attended the incomparably wondrous ‘Amitayus Puja’ presided over by His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at the Taipei City Government Parent-Child Plaza in 2003. At the solemn puja venue, I heard Rinpoche expound the Buddha Dharma, which gave rise to the fate origin for me to learn Buddhism. The following year, in May 2004, I was granted permission to take refuge after imploration. I am deeply grateful to Rinpoche for bestowing me the opportunity to take refuge.

Below, I would like to share how my parents were helped by His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

In the spring of 2012, when my mother was 75 years old, she sought medical treatment for swelling in both feet and was diagnosed with terminal-stage breast cancer. I brought my mother to seek an audience with His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The moment my mother saw Rinpoche, she could not stop crying. Rinpoche immediately turned to ask me, ‘What is it?’I represented my mother to implore to attend the pujas, and didn’t mention that my mother was seriously ill. Rinpoche, with compassion (maitrī and karuṇā), asked me, ‘Has your mother become a vegetarian?’ I replied, ‘She has been a vegetarian for two years.’ After compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) granting the imploration, Rinpoche immediately and voluntarily used the bamboo cane to point toward my mother’s chest and chanted mantras to bless her for quite a long time. At that moment, my mother was so deeply moved that she was unable to utter a single word. Next, my mother wanted to make offerings to Rinpoche, and at first Rinpoche did not accept it. Unexpectedly, my mother pleaded in a trembling voice, ‘I implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) accept it.’ After a brief pause, Rinpoche compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) accepted my mother’s offerings. We all knew that Rinpoche did not accept offerings from believers, and I am deeply grateful to Rinpoche for compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) accepting my mother’s offerings.

While going to the bathroom that night, my mother fell down and was injured, so she missed attending the Chod Puja the following day. Later, I took my mother to the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic established by Rinpoche for treatment and taking medicine, and my mother felt much more energetic. My mother had always been afraid of seeing Western medicine doctors, and I am grateful to Rinpoche for establishing the Chinese Medicine Clinic to help sentient beings who were suffering from illness. My mother once said that, when waking up one morning, she saw Rinpoche right in front of her. I am grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for ceaselessly blessing my mother at every moment. In the later stage of her illness, my mother could only sit in a chair. When she needed to use the bathroom but was unable to stand up, she would reverently recite the Dharma name, ‘Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.’ After that, supported by others on the arm, my mother could strenuously stand up and slowly walk to the bathroom. During the last two months before she passed away, my mother had been unable to lie flat and could only sit in a chair to sleep; yet she hadn’t taken any painkillers or received any morphine, and she did not seem like a patient with terminal-stage cancer at all. I am grateful for His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s incomparably wondrous blessings.

I saw my mother growing weaker and weaker, and only after being reminded by a Dharma brother, did I want to make offerings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on behalf of my mother to accumulate good fortune, merits, and fate. Not long after, my mother fell into a coma and was sent to the hospital. The group leader and Dharma brothers even came specially to the hospital ward to visit my mother, who was in critical condition. The group leader reminded me to remember to place the nectar pill under my mother’s tongue after she stopped breathing. Three days later, my mother passed away in the morning. My father wanted to close my mother’s mouth, which was wide open, but her jaw was so stiff that it could not move at all. Under the guru’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) blessings, I visualized Rinpoche blessing my mother above her head and chanting the Great Six-Syllable Mantra, and then my mother’s widely opened mouth gradually became slightly open; after seeing this, my father was also astonished. I am grateful to Rinpoche!

Later, my father and I went together to seek an audience with Rinpoche. When I reported that my mother had passed away, Rinpoche, without saying a word, immediately chanted mantras compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) to bless my mother, and granted to transfer my mother’s consciousness during the next Chod Puja. Due to my family’s arrangements, my mother’s public memorial ceremony was held before the Chod Puja. After cremation, we saw that my mother’s ashes appeared in pink, light bluish-purple, and light green colors. The staff from the funeral service company also said that my mother’s ashes were indeed extremely beautiful. I firmly believe that only through the incomparably wondrous blessings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did this auspicious sign occur.

Later, one morning, I dreamed that my mother appeared, and she was smiling radiantly and became younger! From childhood until adulthood, I had never seen my mother, who had worked hard throughout her life for the sake of making a living and raising her children, smile with such happiness. I am grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for transferring my mother’s consciousness and helping my mother be free from suffering.

In October of the year after my mother passed away, my father was sent to Tri-Service General Hospital in Neihu due to a car accident. I rushed to the intensive care unit and saw my 81-year-old father unconscious due to the accident, wearing gloves and restrained to the hospital bed; his face was swollen and bloated, looking completely unlike his usual appearance; I felt extremely unbearable. My father worked as a tour guide before and loved freedom, and he absolutely suffered twice as much when restrained on a hospital bed like this. I only wanted to lessen my father’s suffering, and implored in my heart that I would definitely come to seek an audience with Rinpoche in time, and implored for letting me be able to make offerings to Rinpoche on behalf of my father.

When I sought an audience on Saturday, I knelt before Rinpoche and reported that my father had been unconscious for two weeks after the car accident. Rinpoche said, ‘So?’ I replied, ‘I implore for making offerings to Rinpoche on behalf of my father.’ Rinpoche immediately reproached me, ‘You never make offerings ordinarily, yet only now do you decide to make offering!’ At that moment, I deeply repented. Rinpoche then chanted mantras to bless my father for quite a long while. After expressing my gratitude and making offerings to the guru, I rushed to the hospital and told my unconscious father that I had made offerings to Rinpoche on his behalf, and that Rinpoche would surely help him lessen the suffering. That night, my father’s blood pressure just dropped continually, and in the early morning of the following day, my father passed away. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s incomparably wondrous blessings!

I immediately called to report that my father had passed away. After my father’s body was moved to the assisted chanting room, my family gathered around him, visualized His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche blessing my father, and recited the Buddha’s name. Later, I noticed that the yellow cloth covering my father’s body was moving gently like small waves, and then I found that the assisted chanting room became very bright, without the slightest feeling of darkness. Before long, I received a call from a Dharma brother, who told me to uncover the cloth and see whether there had been any changes in my father’s body. The moment I looked, I was extremely astonished. My father’s face, which had been swollen and deathly pale, completely lost its swelling, his complexion became better, and he looked younger, his mouth closed, and his eyes even appeared to be smiling. I could hardly believe that this was the same father who, just an hour earlier, had passed away with a pale face and his mouth wide open. I immediately asked the family members present to come and look, and they also personally witnessed these incredible auspicious signs and marveled at the incomparably wondrous blessings of His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. On the day of my father’s public memorial ceremony, everything went smoothly; after my father’s body was cremated, his ashes displayed beautiful pastel colors and a light green color. Moreover, my family members solely had fond remembrance of my father, without any sorrow, which was truly remarkable. I am grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!

My father was injured and passed away due to a car accident. This would have originally been a tragedy, which could have led to mutual resentment with the person responsible for the accident, legal action being taken in court, and so on. Even if my father had not passed away because of it, he might have remained unconscious, become bedridden in a vegetative state, or suffered immensely while lying in bed for a long period of time. Yet all of this was transformed after Rinpoche’s blessings. The person responsible for the accident and we reached a settlement within one week after the public memorial ceremony, and the process went very smoothly. It was truly incredible. I am grateful to Rinpoche! Over a year later, I learned indirectly that other family members of victims from a traffic accident victims’ association were still in the process of litigation, which lasted for over a year, and the resentment between both sides was still unresolved. Only then did I come to understand the incomparable wondrousness of the Buddha Dharma and further realize the importance of making offerings to the guru. Without His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it would have been impossible for my family to receive such incomparably wondrous help.

Next, I would like to repent. In the year of ROC 97 (2008), I had the fate to be granted the opportunity by Rinpoche to work at the Glorious Jewel Group. However, because I gave rise to greed later, thought that face was important, sought others’ recognition, and was overly concerned about gains and losses, I forgot the Buddha Dharma that the guru had expounded; I did not truly reflect on myself, nor did I devote myself wholeheartedly to doing my work well. In fact, while working at the Group, I learned a great deal: I was able to personally witness the guru’s insistence on product quality, protecting customers, and the quality of travel services. In the workplace, the guru establishes various systems and regulations, allowing employees to work and support their families with peace of mind, and also requires employees to abide by laws and regulations, with clear rewards and punishments. Moreover, what we were able to receive was the good fortune that cannot be seen by the eyes. I had previously heard Dharma brothers share that after working at the group, their cancer cells gradually became smaller and even disappeared. Yet, because of my ignorance, I did not think about any of this, and only wanted to resign from my job and escape my responsibilities. Rinpoche once said that those lacking fate and good fortune would not be able to remain working at the Group for a long time. I did not cherish this opportunity, and I truly and deeply repent.

One day after I submitted my resignation, Rinpoche came to the warehouse for an inspection. When Rinpoche inquired with the colleagues around me, I felt deeply repentant and did not dare to raise my head at all. Yet, I could feel that Rinpoche kept looking in my direction for a considerable amount of time. A few days later, while I was crossing the road, I was hit by a taxi and fell to the ground. My colleague later took me to the hospital, and I was found to have a fractured right cheekbone and was unable to eat, just like sentient beings in the Hungry Ghost Realm who can see food but cannot eat it. At that moment, I began to realize that I had done wrong; because I gave rise to the thoughts of greed and hatred, I actually did not want to serve the guru, was ungrateful, and merely thought of my own interests, ignoring sentient beings. As Rinpoche once expounded, ‘Once one leaves the guru’s protective umbrella, the blessing power of the lineage immediately ceases; one will proceed following the original karma.’ It was as if the sentient beings I had harmed severely struck me down to the ground.

Later, Rinpoche expounded during a puja that if it had not been because I was a disciple and had made offerings before, I should have died in that car accident. I am grateful to Rinpoche for saving my life back then, allowing my parents to later have the fate to seek an audience with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and to be fortunate to receive the consciousness transference from Rinpoche.

His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is extremely compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) toward sentient beings, always giving the best to sentient beings. I remember that in 2005, when I followed Rinpoche to Qinghai for pilgrimage, before departing in the morning, Rinpoche woke up early to bless all the vehicles. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s blessings, and the entire journey was safe.

We departed from Xining by jeep at a little after 6 a.m. in the early morning. After rushing along the road until past 2 a.m. the next day, we finally arrived in Yushu. Along the way, we passed through the Bayan Har Mountains, the height of which is over 4,000 meters; enduring the headaches and discomfort caused by altitude sickness throughout the journey, we finally arrived at the large hotel that had been booked in Yushu. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I was greatly surprised. Although it was already 2 a.m., the tables in the restaurant were filled with medicinal cuisine, and there was not just one table waiting to be served for the Dharma brothers who arrived late. That night, we ate the delicious medicinal hot pot. Fortunately, I had already vomited during the journey, so I still had an appetite to eat; otherwise, I truly would not have had the good fortune to enjoy such good food. To be honest, I had never seen a restaurant where servers waited for guests to dine until midnight. At that time, I heard that there were also vehicles that arrived even later than ours. These special arrangements were all bestowed by Rinpoche. I am grateful to Rinpoche, and I also thank Sino Travel Services for such thoughtful arrangements.

The Vegetarian Cuisine, the brunch restaurant, coffee shops, the cake shop, the Chinese Medicine Clinic, the Antique Furniture shop, the Jewelry shop, the Fashion & Beauty shop, the Hair Salon, and the Art Center established by the Glorious Jewel Group all uphold the principle of giving the best to everyone. I believe that those who have visited them can all experience this. There is also the Glorious Jewel Tea Hut; those who have visited it feel as though they have undergone a cultural immersion in Japanese tea culture. What is especially touching is that, as for the treasured tea utensils collected inside, the owner of the tea hut also generously allowed the participants of the tea ceremony to appreciate them together. Some precious utensils are even made available for us to use, allowing us to experience the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship. It truly allows us to feel that the style of a shop is just like the owner’s way of treating people and handling matters, which is giving the best to sentient beings. How could we not diligently learn and cherish it?

Next, I would like to repent for having harmed sentient beings and having eaten the meat of sentient beings; I repent that in the past, because of my craving for food, I even asked my mother to cook meat for me to eat; and that I enjoyed traveling and often ate so-called local delicacies from different places, and even once tasted live fish prepared in three different ways with friends, as well as barbecue, grilled squid and etc. I repent for the karma of the ten non-meritorious acts I have committed. I repent for being unfilial toward my parents, and for often speaking harsh words to hurt others and criticize others; I once borrowed books and did not return them, and I even thought it was natural to take office stationery. When imploring for the Dharma, I lacked the fervent aspiration and reverent mind, and did not completely listen. I repent!

After the car accident, I underwent surgery in my mouth to correct the bones, which reminded me of when I was a child; I was standing in front of a market with my mother, watching how the fish seller handled the fish. My surgery was exactly the same as the fish seller cutting through the fish meat and bones! Rinpoche once expounded that even watching others kill pigs is following evil and carries karma. Watching others kill fish is the same! I deeply repent!

Since 1997, His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has propagated authentic Buddha Dharma through his own capability of gaining a fruition level, benefiting countless sentient beings. From the Buddhist Center on Minsheng East Road to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which is painstakingly constructed and completed over the course of eight years, Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) vow power has never ceased, even for a moment, and is no different from that of the Buddha; Rinpoche unceasingly dedicates his every thought to rescuing sentient beings.

On the journey of this life, without the Buddha Dharma teachings of His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I would have entered the endless darkness of reincarnation, unable to see the light. I will strive to learn Buddhism and correct myself, and use the Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas as my baseline, facing and repenting the evil karma I have committed before, and never committing them again.

Lastly, I pray for His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s good health; his Dharma wheel turns unceasingly; his Buddha Dharma activities flourish; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma lineage spreads eternally; the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche benefits vast sentient beings. I thank fellow believers and Dharma brothers for listening patiently.
