1336:Appreciation to the Guru for Compassionate (Maitrī and Karuṇā) Blessings and the Incomparably Wondrous Teachings of the Buddha Dharma

Prostrations to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the Lineage gurus, and Dharma Protector Achi. Greetings, fellow believers and Dharma brothers. I am Lou Cui Feng from Group Six, and my Dharma name is Hui Xiang Drolma. My elder sister is Lou Mei Zhong from Group Four, and my brother-in-law is Lu Jian An from Group Three. I took refuge in His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on April 4, 2021. I am grateful to Rinpoche for granting me the opportunity to praise the guru’s benevolence toward my family and me, share with you the fate of my refuge, and to repent the evil karmas I have committed from accumulated past lifetimes.

After my elder sister and brother-in-law took refuge in His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, whenever there were family gatherings, they would praise and share with family members the traces of the guru helping sentient beings; they also invited family members to attend the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness presided over by Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at the Nangang Exhibition Center. At that time, I had not yet taken refuge to learn Buddhism; every time I attended such a solemn and grand puja, when I watched Rinpoche performing the Dharma on the Dharma throne, my heart was filled with gratitude and admiration.

After my elder sister and brother-in-law took refuge in His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they took my parents, my third elder sister, me, my younger brother, my youngest sister, and my youngest brother-in-law to seek an audience with Rinpoche several times. Each time, Rinpoche would compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) bless my father. After my father passed away in 2018, our whole family sought an audience with Rinpoche together and implored Rinpoche to transfer my father’s consciousness. I am grateful to Rinpoche for granting to transfer my father’s consciousness in the Chod Puja and for also benevolently granting my mother, my younger brother, and me permission to attend the Chod Puja. From November 2018 onward, we attended the Chod Puja every month until it was suspended in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After my mother passed away in 2022, her consciousness was also transferred by Rinpoche in the Chod Puja. I am grateful to Rinpoche. (Please refer to Article No. 1211 on the Traces of Liberating Beings for details.)

At around 3:00 p.m. on August 11, 2020, after driving my mother home, I had a serious car accident on my way home due to fatigue. My car struck an elderly couple who were waiting by the roadside to cross the street. At the moment of the accident, I was completely unaware of what had happened; I only felt that my car had hit something very hard and smelled something burning. As I slowly regained consciousness and became clear-headed, I thought the car was about to catch fire and hurried to get out. Because the driver’s airbag had deployed, I struggled to climb out of the car and saw an elderly man lying face down on the traffic island. I was extremely frightened and hurried to find my phone to call an ambulance. At that moment, there happened to be several passersby nearby, and I immediately asked them to help to call an ambulance. Feeling extremely anxious and at a loss, I then also saw an elderly woman lying on the grass of the traffic island beside the front of my car, with an overturned wheelchair beside her. There was a nursing home by the roadside, and its staff also ran out to assist. When I heard the nursing home staff say that the elderly woman had passed away, I was completely stunned, immediately knelt down, and recited ‘Amitabha’. My first thought at that moment was to implore His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for help.

That Saturday, I registered to seek an audience with Rinpoche. Rinpoche asked, ‘What is it?’ I reported to Rinpoche about the car accident, saying that one person died and another was seriously injured, and implored Rinpoche for help. Rinpoche expounded, ‘You only come to implore for help when the problem happens. You were the one who hit them, not me.’ I then implored Rinpoche to transfer the consciousness of the deceased whom I ran over. Rinpoche expounded that my imploration for the deceased’s consciousness to be transferred was out of fear of criminal liability, not truly for the sake of the deceased; I was not genuinely repenting, nor did I have compassion; the car accident was the karmic retribution of karma; and that Rinpoche would transfer the deceased’s consciousness, but I had to bear the karmic retribution myself. I nodded and implored to attend the Sunday puja on August 16. Rinpoche, with great maitrī and great karuṇā, granted me permission to attend the puja.

At a little over 9:00 a.m. on August 16, while I was preparing to take a bus north from Taichung Bus Station to attend the puja, I received a phone call from the police informing me that the prosecutor wanted to take my statement and that I had to go to the police station immediately. I asked the police to reschedule the time, but the police replied, ‘No.’ Therefore, I went to the police station to give my statement and did not attend the puja that Sunday.

The following Saturday (August 22), I again sought an audience with Rinpoche and implored to attend the Sunday puja. I also reported to Rinpoche the reason why I did not attend the puja on August 16. Rinpoche expounded that it is allowable to request leave for taking a statement with the prosecutor; because I was concerned that failing to report at the scheduled time would be unfavorable to me, I chose to ask the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for leave and not attend the puja; and that I thought that I could not offend the police because I was afraid that if I offended them, the statement written by the police would be unfavorable, and I would be fined later. Rinpoche instructed Dharma brother Prosecutor Zhu to explain this to me. On that day, I implored again to seek an audience and again repent to Rinpoche, and implored to attend the puja. Rinpoche expounded that my imploration to attend the puja was because I hoped that my responsibility would not be so heavy and wanted to escape my worldly responsibility, and that I did not have compassion toward the deceased. Rinpoche asked me to think carefully about it when I got back.

Rinpoche did not permit me to attend the puja on August 23. Afterwards, on the official website of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, I saw the puja teachings of Rinpoche on that day: ‘Many people think, “Buddha Dharma is not important, my life is important.” Then you continue to live your life. It is just like that someone came to implore me to attend the puja two weeks ago because she ran over a person in a car accident. I did not grant her permission to attend the puja this week because I could see that although she claimed she was imploring me to attend the puja for the deceased, at the bottom of her heart, she hoped that her responsibility would not be so heavy and wanted to escape worldly responsibility. For negligent manslaughter, in minor cases, one would compensate a lot of money; in serious cases, one would go to prison. Last Saturday, my heart was softened, and I agreed to let her attend the puja the next day. As a result, she did not come, giving the reason that the police asked her to go for questioning on Sunday. Fortunately, there was a disciple beside me who understood the law and said, “Police questioning can be requested for leave.” She, however, did the opposite: “I can ask the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for leave, but I cannot offend the police. Because if I offend the police, the statement written by the police will be unfavorable, and I will be penalized later.” This is the person who claims to believe in karma! Thus, when she came to implore again yesterday, I did not allow her to attend the puja. Why? Because she did not have compassion toward the deceased, and merely wanted to escape responsibility. Then how could the consciousness of this deceased be summoned to come to Rinpoche for consciousness transference? I have never met this deceased, and there is no fate between us. Why does one need to personally attend the puja? Because it is your mind that summons all deceased beings here, not me nor the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If you have the mind of compassion and repentance, your mind will correspond with the guru’s mind and with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara will help you find them and bring them here.’

I am grateful to Rinpoche for pointing out my problem. After the accident, indeed, I was extremely frightened and timid in my heart. I felt that I had never intended to harm anyone; I did not know why such a thing had happened, nor did I dare face the mistakes I had made. I merely wanted to escape and seek help to lessen my responsibility, without thinking about the suffering endured by the deceased. I didn’t truly repent, nor did I have compassion(maitrī and karuṇā). I was indeed profoundly evil.

Since August 29, 2020, every Saturday I sought an audience with Rinpoche to implore to attend the Sunday puja and to implore to take refuge and repent to Rinpoche. Rinpoche compassionately(maitrī and karuṇā) granted me permission to attend the pujas. Through seeking an audience with Rinpoche every Saturday and attending the Sunday pujas, I am grateful to Rinpoche for his continual blessings and the incomparably wondrous teachings of the Buddha Dharma, which enabled me to learn to examine myself, dare to face the mistakes I had made, accept and bear the karmic retribution, and to realize how dreadful karma is. I resolved to take refuge in Rinpoche to learn Buddha Dharma, practice by following the teachings, correct my behavior and mind, practice the Ten Meritorious Acts, and to live my life according to the Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, hoping to be liberated from the reincarnation of birth and death. Finally, I was granted permission to take refuge after imploration on March 31, 2021, and took refuge in His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on April 4, 2021.

Under Rinpoche’s incomparably wondrous teachings of the Buddha Dharma and blessings, I, in the abyss of confusion, fear, and darkness, gradually calmed my mind, reflected on myself, came to know my own ignorance, selfishness, and self-interest, and realized that I had only thought of myself and had not honestly faced the mistakes I had committed. I repented for the evil karma I had created and accepted the karmic retribution. Ultimately, I reached a settlement with the victim’s family regarding the car accident, and was issued a deferred prosecution disposition and ordered to perform 40 hours of community service. I am grateful to Rinpoche for granting me the opportunity to learn Buddha Dharma. Rinpoche’s teachings are like a bright lamp in the darkness, guiding me. I am determined to forever follow His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to learn Buddha Dharma and practice by following the teachings.

Here, I would also like to share about Bao Yuan Gao from the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic. Bao Yuan Gao is a commonly kept medicine among my family members. When there is skin damage, inflammation, itchy facial skin with small yellow rashes, minor burns, or other conditions, as long as Bao Yuan Gao is applied, it would effectively relieve discomfort, and the wounds also heal quickly. I am grateful to Rinpoche for establishing the Glorious Jewel Japanese Food, allowing me and my family to eat with peace of mind, and enjoy nutritious and healthy food.

Finally, I repent for the evil karma I have created in my past lifetimes and this life. I had undergone three abortions due to saving face and the fear of being unable to take care of them; I repent for having ate the meat of countless sentient beings due to my craving for food; I repent that I frequently have the hatred in order to satisfy my own desires; I repent for being self-righteous and believing that I was always doing things for the benefit of others; I repent that I constantly remaining in the cycle of the Five Poisons, fail to properly practice the Ten Meritorious Acts and the Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, and continue to create evil karma. I repent for arising hatred toward my father-in-law because he spat everywhere and did not wash his hands with soap after using the restroom.

I pray that, under the blessings and teachings of His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I will be able to correct my evil habits, diligently change myself, not fall into the Three Evil Realms, be liberated from the reincarnation of birth and death, and be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land.

I pray for the Founding Abbot Guru of the Glorious Jewel, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s good health, longevity, and auspiciousness; his Dharma wheel turns unceasingly; Rinpoche abides in the world forever; the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche flourishes and achieves perfection, and the pure Dharma lineage spreads eternally, benefiting all sentient beings. I thank all fellow believers and Dharma brothers for listening patiently.
