1319:Awe-inspiring Power Permeates the Void
Prostrations to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the Lineage gurus, Dharma Protector Achi, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Greetings, Dharma brothers and fellow believers, I am Wu Yi Rong from Group Five, and my Dharma name is Hui Sheng Drolma. My uncle is Zeng Da Ji from Group Seven, my aunt is Hong Shu Yun from Group Two, my husband is Gao Zhi Hong from Group Seven, and my son is Gao Yu Jun from Group Five. I am grateful to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for bestowing me the opportunity to hereby praise the guru’s merits, share with you how the guru has helped my mother, and repent for the evil karma my family members and I have committed.
In the 99th year of the Republic of China (2010), my 4-year-old son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and we sought an audience with Rinpoche. Recalling that waiting for the audience, I was in exceeding despair, my son cried incessantly, and our family was completely at a loss. However, as soon as my son knelt before Rinpoche, my son immediately stopped crying. Rinpoche comforted the child, saying, ‘There are no doctors here, no injections. Don’t be afraid.’At that time, I irreverently implored Rinpoche for the comfort of my mind, and Rinpoche kindly said, ‘I do not understand the words you speak. I specialize in helping patients with incurable diseases, whom doctors cannot treat. I understand your suffering; I also have children, and I know the inner pain parents feel when their child is ill.’Rinpoche is a practitioner with great power and compassion (maitrī and karuṇā). At that moment, my mother and our entire family were amazed by Rinpoche’s great attraction (Puja Teachings Index 22) power, and we developed the highest reverence for Rinpoche. I am grateful to Rinpoche, and my son’s condition is now stable. In the 100th year of the Republic of China (2011), we are grateful to Rinpoche for compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) allowing us, whose evil karma is deep and heavy, to take refuge and learn the Buddha Dharma. On August 31, the 113th year of the Republic of China (2024), my mother called to tell me that she had swelling all over her body, with her skin leaking fluid, and needed to be hospitalized for treatment. Unexpectedly, after my mother was admitted, her condition worsened; her lungs became white with haze, her blood pressure and blood sugar became too high to be controlled, her kidney function index declined, and her white blood cell count rose to over 10,000, posing a risk of septicemia. Due to the swelling, my mother was extremely short of breath. The doctors informed us that my mother’s vital signs were extremely poor, and her life was at risk, requiring immediate transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU). Although my mother had multiple chronic diseases, she was able to take care of herself in daily life. Yet, impermanence arrived at any time. I followed my mother’s earlier instructions, which are not to undergo extensive medical suffering, informing the doctor that I would help my mother sign the Do Not Resuscitate Order—no intubation, no tracheotomy, no hemodialysis. I am grateful to the guru for compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) being unwilling to abandon sentient beings, teaching us the Buddha Dharma, and for letting us understand the impermanence of life and death, as well as the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Though I am reluctant to see my mother suffer from illness, this is the karmic retribution for harming sentient beings from accumulated past lifetimes. I repent in my mind on my mother’s behalf for the sentient beings she has harmed.
When I visited my mother in the ICU, I let my mother take a precious nectar pill bestowed by Rinpoche, and asked if my mother wanted to grasp the opportunity to donate her savings to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. My mother said that during her many hospitalizations, it was only because she received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings and protection that her life was never in danger. My mother was deeply grateful to Rinpoche; she said that Rinpoche’s efforts in constructing the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were strenuous, that Rinpoche had helped lots of people and was a great practitioner, and that she would be highly glad to donate to the Monastery each month. I am grateful to Rinpoche for granting us the virtuous fate of donating to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. I quickly took my mother’s savings, made a donation to the Monastery on her behalf, and also signed up to make offerings to Rinpoche at the Buddhist Center that Saturday.
My mother had diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, and her body had endured much suffering. She had also seen many friends undergo various forms of medical torment before passing away, and she hoped to endure less medical suffering and pass away peacefully. I often shared my mother with Rinpoche’s puja teachings and traces of liberating sentient beings. She said she remembered that as long as she believed in Rinpoche, Rinpoche would take care of her and protect her. She believed in Rinpoche, so she was not afraid of death. I played for my mother the recordings of Rinpoche chanting mantras and told her that there were many suffering sentient beings in the ICU, and that they could listen together to Rinpoche’s chanting mantras. Upon hearing this, my mother was deeply delighted. Although my mother was short of breath, she intermittently recited Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma name. I also continuously visualized Rinpoche bestowing blessings above my mother’s head.
When the attending doctor in the ICU appeared, he asked me very unhappily, ‘Whether or not have you signed the Do Not Resuscitate Order?’ He also said that my mother was extremely short of breath, and even with the oxygen set to the maximum level, she was still struggling to breathe. The Do Not Resuscitate Order I had signed prevented him from administering aggressive treatment for my mother. He also questioned me, asking if we were not going to proceed with aggressive treatment, why had we transferred my mother to the ICU? The doctor told me that intubation and tracheotomy were both to help treat my mother and could alleviate her condition. However, I told the doctor that my mother had previously instructed that she did not want resuscitation, intubation, tracheotomy, or dialysis.
The doctor became extremely angry and scolded me, saying that I was self-righteous in my filial piety, that I should not think that by no intubation and no tracheotomy, my mother would be able to pass away peacefully, and that she may be short of breath for months and then die painfully, yet I would not know or see her suffering. When the other family members heard the doctor speak in this way, their hearts were softened, and they persuaded me to listen to the doctor and consent to intubation for my mother. I asked my mother once more whether she wanted to be intubated. My mother expressed that she accepted death and did not want to undergo excessive medical suffering. She intermittently followed along with Rinpoche’s chanting mantras; when she was not chanting, she recited Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma name. Although she was extremely short of breath, she did not feel anxious about her illness.
On the third day, the doctor explained to me that he wanted to perform a lung examination for my mother, which would require the use of a contrast agent. The contrast agent would need to be excreted by the kidneys, and since my mother’s kidney function was already poor, there was concern that she might need hemodialysis after receiving the contrast agent. At that time, my aunt also persuaded me to consent to intubation for my mother. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s blessings that my mother was very short of breath, but her consciousness remained clear. I once again asked my mother whether she wanted to be intubated. She expressed that she did not. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) and awe-inspiring power, which allowed my mother to clearly express her willingness.
On the fourth day, when I entered the ICU, the doctor informed me that my mother’s condition had improved and that after a few more days of treatment, she might be transferred out of the ICU. It came as a surprise that within just one day, my mother’s condition had improved considerably. The doctor said that after receiving diuretics, my mother was no longer swollen, and her shortness of breath had also improved. My mother stayed in the ICU for seven days; it was not as the doctor had said that she would be short of breath for months and then die painfully.
On Monday, my sister took over the care for our mother, and I returned to my work. My colleagues said that she didn’t realize how serious my mother’s condition had been, yet miraculously, in just a few days, she was transferred out of the ICU; she was wondering which doctor was so skilled. Another colleague, who had attended a puja at Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, immediately responded, ‘It wasn’t the doctor who saved her mother; it was Rinpoche who saved her.’Rinpoche once taught that Rinpoche’s Dharma Body is always with us. We haven’t even gone to the Buddhist Center to implore Rinpoche for blessings, and simply believing that Rinpoche will help and bless us, we will receive the compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) blessings and help from Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) and awe-inspiring power permeates the void. As long as we believe in Rinpoche and implore Rinpoche for help, we will receive the blessings. On Saturday, our whole family went to the Buddhist Center to express our gratitude and make offerings to Rinpoche.
After this, my mother was hospitalized several more times, but through receiving Rinpoche’s blessings, she did not endure excessive medical suffering. During her illness, I more often shared with my mother Rinpoche’s puja teachings and the incomparably wondrous traces of Rinpoche transferring the consciousness of sentient beings. My mother claimed that Rinpoche is a Bodhisattva, that every Saturday, Rinpoche always receives the audience of sentient beings, who are suffering or having difficulty, and bestows them help, and that for the benefit of sentient beings, Rinpoche contributes his own money and efforts to construct the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She was deeply grateful to Rinpoche and also very reluctant to see how hard Rinpoche works. She implored to make an offering of a portion of her money to Rinpoche, and I conveyed this decision to our family.
My younger sister told me that one day in the hospital room, our mother said she saw Rinpoche standing before her bed, radiating golden light and wearing a Dharma crown, chanting mantras to bless her. Rinpoche appeared extremely solemn and compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā). My mother was profoundly grateful to Rinpoche for coming to bless her. Therefore, regarding our mother’s decision to make offerings to Rinpoche, my sister had no objection at all, and said that Rinpoche had saved our mother, and we should be grateful to Rinpoche.
Before my mother passed away, because her blood pressure had suddenly dropped, she was transferred to the ICU. I expressed to the head nurse that I hoped my mother could receive hospice care and no longer suffer. On August 5, the 114th year of the Republic of China (2025), after speaking with my siblings, my mother passed away peacefully. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s blessings. When my mother passed away, her expression was serene, as if she were asleep, but her mouth did not close. After her passing, my family and I went to the Buddhist Center to implore Rinpoche to transfer my mother’s consciousness. Rinpoche accepted only my modest offerings and did not accept my mother’s offerings, yet compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) granted our imploration to transfer my mother’s consciousness at the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness on September 14. Rinpoche also granted me permission to perform grand prostrations at the Buddhist Center for my mother until the day of the Great Puja. I am grateful to Rinpoche. When my mother was placed in her coffin, her mouth had closed, and her countenance looked even prettier than at the moment of her passing. I asked the funeral home staff whether they had applied makeup to my mother, and they replied, ‘Your mother looks pretty, and there is no need to apply makeup.’ On August 14, after my mother was cremated, a round hole appeared on her skull as an auspicious sign. I am grateful to Rinpoche for transferring my mother’s consciousness.
Rinpoche holds the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness to transfer the consciousness of suffering sentient beings. It is Rinpoche’s compassion (maitrī and karuṇā) that lets sentient beings, who lack in good fortune and affinities, not fall into Hell and attain liberation. My mother was not a vegetarian, did not learn Buddhism, and did not believe in karma. She regarded Rinpoche as a deity to worship, merely wishing to obtain Rinpoche’s protection. My mother was an excellent cook and often prepared all kinds of delicacies, killing countless sentient beings, and she loved to eat meat, especially fish. The causes my mother planted all led to the retribution of falling into Hell. I am grateful that Rinpoche, in his compassion (maitrī and karuṇā) and unwillingness to see sentient beings fall into Hell, transfers my mother’s consciousness. I want to repent on behalf of my mother, myself, and my family members. Our whole family loved to eat meat; my grandparents even sold chicken to raise us, and we all helped process and sell chicken, forming evil affinities with sentient beings and planting the retribution of falling into Hell. I am grateful to Rinpoche for being compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) willing to let our family, burdened with deep and heavy evil karma, to take refuge, teaching us the Buddha Dharma, and for enabling us to understand that the evils committed in this lifetime are as numerous as grains of sand, and that we should repent all the evil karma we have committed.
In her later years, my mother’s teeth and mouth were not in good condition. I am grateful that Rinpoche imports Japanese food, Japanese Koshihikari rice, soy milk, miso, soup stock powder, and dried persimmons, all of which were my mother’s favorites. My mother always said that it was because Rinpoche imported these foods that she could eat such high-quality Japanese Koshihikari rice, that Koshihikari rice is delicious and nutritious, and that toxin-free food allows people to eat worry-free. Rinpoche organized the Feast of Songs music concerts. Whenever there was a concert, my mother would definitely travel north to attend and watch the wonderful performances of every singer. She also praised and thanked Rinpoche, saying that every concert organized by Rinpoche was a feast for both the ears and the eyes.
My mother also went to the Glorious Jewel Vegetarian Cuisine to savor the delicious chef’s-menu vegetarian cuisine. The warm and attentive service made her praise it ceaselessly. Once, at the cafe shop in the Dazhi area, she was extremely fortunate to encounter Rinpoche also dining there. My mother was happy for several days, saying that dining in the same place as Rinpoche and seeing Rinpoche at close range showed that she had great good fortune. My mother extremely favors sweets, and whenever she traveled north, she would certainly taste the cakes from the Glorious Jewel Cake Shop. The cakes are made with Utmost Bliss Sugar imported from Japan, which has not been refined and retains its full minerals and vitamins, allowing my mother, who had diabetes, to enjoy sweets without burden. Bao Yuan Gao was indispensable in daily life. Whether it was various wounds or joint pain, once Bao Yuan Gao was applied, recovery would come quickly. My mother always felt at ease only when there was a supply kept at home. My mother often praised that what Rinpoche gives us are all treasures and the best.
During the period when my mother was ill and hospitalized, we saw many sick people facing the helplessness and powerlessness of birth, aging, sickness, and death. My family and I are deeply grateful that we were able to take refuge in His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to learn Buddhism. Only after listening to the guru’s incomparably wondrous teachings did we know to repent and realize that we are not good people, and had long already planted the causes for falling into Hell. Only by listening daily to Rinpoche’s teachings and correcting ourselves according to the Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, reflecting ourselves each day and discovering our evil thoughts and evil habits of greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt, and correcting them, can our lives have the opportunity to turn from black to white, and will we be reborn in the Pure Land of Utmost Bliss.
I want to repent openly; on behalf of my family members and my mother, I repent to all the sentient beings we have killed and harmed through accumulated past lifetimes. Rinpoche once expounded that those with heavy karma of killing would suffer many illnesses, have short lifespans, and have imperfect families. We sincerely repent and are willing to face and accept the karmic retribution in this lifetime. I am grateful to Rinpoche for accepting our entire family to take refuge, and for teaching us through various virtuous and skillful methods to observe the precepts and cease doing evil. I am grateful to Rinpoche for being willing to accept offerings from us, who lack in good fortune and affinities, allowing us to donate to the pure and tranquil Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and for creating all kinds of fates for us to do virtuous deeds so that we have the opportunity to practice virtue and accumulate good fortune to continue learning Buddhism. I am grateful to Rinpoche for compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) showing mercy on sentient beings and transferring my mother’s consciousness so that she did not fall into the Three Evil Realms. The guru teaches us Buddha Dharma and allows us to listen, contemplate, and practice; however, there are still many sentient beings who are unable to listen to the Buddha Dharma and therefore cannot attain liberation. I implore and pray that all sentient beings may possess happiness and the causes of happiness, leave suffering and the causes of suffering; that all sentient beings may never leave the joy that is free from suffering; and that all sentient beings may stay away from abiding in attachment and hatred, and abandon them equally. I should be even more diligent in learning Buddhism to repay the benevolence of the guru, the Buddha, my parents, and sentient beings.
Lastly, I pray for the Founding Abbot Guru of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s good health; the Dharma wheel turns unceasingly; his Buddha Dharma activities perfectly flourish; his Dharma lineage spreads eternally; the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche benefits all sentient beings. I thank all Dharma brothers and fellow believers for listening patiently.
