1343:Appreciation for the Guru for Compassionately (Maitrī and Karuṇā) Rescuing My Mother-in-Law
Prostrations to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the Lineage gurus, Dharma Protector Achi, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Greetings, fellow believers and Dharma brothers. I am Huang Zi Yan from Group Five, and my Dharma name is Hui Ji Drolma. My husband is Xu Cheng Nan from Group Seven, my mother-in-law is Li Xing from Group Four, and my two children are Xu Bao Chuan and Xu Feng De, both from Group Five. I am grateful to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for bestowing upon me the opportunity to hereby share with you how Rinpoche has helped my mother-in-law transcend suffering and attain happiness, and to repent the evil karma I have committed.
In ROC year 99 (2010), my husband and I were invited by our supervisor at that time to attend the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness held at the Nangang Exhibition Center. My husband, who had originally been a total meat lover, began to be a vegetarian under the guru’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) blessings. Every time we returned to Pingtung to visit my parents-in-law and shared with them Rinpoche’s incomparably wondrous traces of liberating sentient beings, my mother-in-law was always extremely happy. She said that she also wanted to be a vegetarian and that she desperately wished to seek an audience with this great practitioner and repent to this great practitioner for the various evil karma she had committed.
In the ROC year 102 (2013), my eldest son Bao Chuan was born. My mother-in-law came to Taipei to live with us, so she had the opportunity to come to the Buddhist Center to seek an audience with Rinpoche and repent to Rinpoche for having killed many ants by scalding them with boiling water when she was young. Rinpoche compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) asked my mother-in-law, ‘Did you often go to the riverside in the past? Did you do anything there?’ Although my mother-in-law could not recall anything at the moment, Rinpoche compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) asked again, ‘What else is it?’ My mother-in-law immediately implored to take refuge. At that time, my husband, I, and Bao Chuan had all already been granted permission to take refuge after imploration, and Rinpoche compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) expounded, ‘One more will not make a difference,’ and granted her permission. Afterward, my mother-in-law recalled at home that her elder brother often went fishing by the riverside and brought the fish home for her to kill, thereby creating much karma of killing. I am grateful to Rinpoche for awakening my mother-in-law, allowing her to remember the karma of killing she had committed. Whenever my mother-in-law remembered the evil karma she had committed, she felt deeply repentant.
My mother-in-law suffered from asthma, with a wheezing sound in her breathing. When she lived in southern Taiwan, she received Western medical treatment for a long time. The doctor prescribed bronchodilators and noted in the remarks that they carried a fatal risk. After moving to Taipei, my mother-in-law began to recuperate at the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic, and her asthma gradually improved. One day, I suddenly realized that I no longer heard the wheezing sound in her breathing. Her hereditary high blood pressure also became normal, and her sleep quality improved greatly. With long-term conditioning at the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic, she was able to stop relying on Western medicines such as sleeping pills, antihypertensive drugs, and bronchodilators. I am grateful to Rinpoche!
On the evening of 25 January, ROC year 112 (2023), my mother-in-law fell down in the bedroom and told me that she had twisted her foot and could not stand up; only after an X-ray was taken in the emergency room did we discover that she had a femoral neck fracture. However, the breaking point of the fracture was clean, and there was no displacement, so it only required fixation with metal pins and did not need to be replaced with an artificial joint. While waiting for a hospital bed in the emergency room, my mother-in-law was not accustomed to using diapers, so I helped her to the restroom. The doctor could not find my mother-in-law in the emergency room, and then discovered that my mother-in-law had gotten out of bed. Besides asking my mother-in-law not to get out of bed, he asked in surprise, ‘Don’t you feel pain?’ Only then did I, who was careless, realize that a femoral neck fracture would normally be very painful and that she should not move arbitrarily to prevent the bone from becoming displaced. At that time, it was during annual leave; hospital beds and operating rooms were extremely difficult to arrange, but through Rinpoche’s protection and blessings, my mother-in-law was successfully assigned a hospital bed by noon the next day and underwent surgery that afternoon. The entire process went very smoothly, and my mother-in-law, who was already 88 years old at that time, also recovered quite well.
In her later years, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and developed symptoms of dementia. Even so, we often reminded her to remember Rinpoche; when my mother-in-law attended the pujas, she could sit quietly and listen to the Buddha Dharma expounded by the guru. Under Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) protection, my mother-in-law found support for both body and mind in her later years and had great faith in and reverence for the guru, allowing her to receive a lessened effect of heavy karmic retribution amid old age and the suffering of illness.
In April of ROC year 115 (2026), my mother-in-law’s mental and physical condition gradually declined. On April 22, she was drowsy and unable to get up all day. We took her to the hospital for examinations, and the results showed inflammation of the urinary tract. Three days later, the inflammation healed, but she then developed pneumonia. After another three days of antibiotic treatment, the pneumonia was cured. When we wanted to bring my mother-in-law home, the hospital informed us that occult blood had been found in her stool and that she needed to remain in the hospital for observation. On the evening of April 29, we received a call from the caregiver that my mother-in-law had suddenly developed difficulty breathing, and my husband immediately went to the hospital to bring my mother-in-law home. My mother-in-law passed away at 11 p.m. that evening. We placed a nectar pill under her tongue, reminded her to remember her Dharma name, ‘Hui An Drolma,’ and told her, ‘The whole family will follow His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to learn Buddhism. Please do not worry about us. You should follow Rinpoche reassuringly to go to the Pure Land.’ We also visualized Rinpoche blessing my mother-in-law above her head, and began chanting mantras. Eight hours later, when the funeral service company came to collect my mother-in-law’s body, her cheeks were full, her expression was peaceful, her body was soft, and her mouth was slightly open; her face bore no trace whatsoever of the appearance of dementia she had shown before.
On Saturday, May 2, the whole family sought an audience with His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, imploring the guru to transfer my mother-in-law’s consciousness and bestow a date for her cremation. Rinpoche reprimanded my husband for not practicing and did not accept his offering, but still compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) granted the transfer of my mother-in-law’s consciousness in the Chod Puja and bestowed May 11 as the date for her cremation. On the day of the cremation, when my mother-in-law’s body underwent the SPA, her complexion was rosy, her expression was peaceful, her four limbs were cool, and the crown of her head was warm; when we held her hand to bid her farewell, her hand had also become exceptionally delicate and soft. After my mother-in-law was cremated, a small, neat round hole appeared at the crown chakra of her skull. I am grateful to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for saving my mother-in-law.
I repent that although I watched my bedridden father grow increasingly thin over the years, because he was unwilling to go out, I did not take him to the Buddhist Center to seek an audience with Rinpoche. Watching my father suffer, I did not help him create fate with the guru. I thought that by doing grand prostrations on his behalf and repenting to sentient beings, I could help my father accumulate good fortune, and I often thought in my mind that this should allow my father to receive the guru’s help.
When my father passed away, he had no fate to receive the guru’s help through Buddha Dharma. It was Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) expounding that finally woke me up: ‘It’s in vain that you have been doing grand prostrations for over a year. Why, among so many disciples, are you the only one who has not been granted after imploring for your father to receive consciousness transference?’ Whenever I think of the guru’s expounding, I feel deeply grieved. Because I was unfilial, did not regard learning Buddhism as the most important thing in my life, muddled through each day, followed the tide, did not listen to Rinpoche’s teachings and put them into practice every day, and had a perfunctory attitude toward learning Buddhism, I caused my father to sink into the boundless sea of suffering. I am grateful to Rinpoche for pointing out my problems and allowing me to see them, and I resolve to correct myself and never commit them again. I sincerely ask Dharma brothers to take this as a warning.
I also want to repent that: when I was young, I used glue to stick many ants together, caught butterflies to make specimens, and tied the legs of beetles with string as toys, causing their feet to break; when I played by the streams as a child, I fished, caught shrimp, gathered clams, and killed many aquatic beings; driven by cravings for food, I ate chickens, ducks, geese, cattle, pigs, deer, sheep, fish, snakes, frogs, shrimp, crabs, and many other kinds of sentient beings; out of curiosity, I ate the dolphin meat; I also personally killed many fish and shrimp; and I served meat dishes at wedding banquets, creating countless karma of killing. I was also self-righteous, and stood up for others without distinguishing right from wrong or verifying the facts; I bullied classmates, stole stationery from the company; I committed stealing, sexual misconduct, divisive speech, harsh speech, arrogance, selfishness, disbelief in karma, irreverence toward my parents, and disrespect toward others. Since taking refuge, I have lived a peaceful life under Rinpoche’s protection, and my mind toward learning Buddhism has gradually slacked off. I looked down on my supervisors, spoke ill of others behind their backs, and committed countless other evil karma. I deeply repent and will never commit them again.
I am grateful to the guru for diligently teaching disciples the precious Buddha Dharma for liberation from birth and death, and for expounding various precious Dharma methods for practicing the Bodhisattva Path to benefit sentient beings. I will surely examine and correct myself every day according to the Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, follow in the guru’s footsteps to practice the Bodhisattva Path, and vow to be liberated from birth and death and reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
I pray for His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s good health, longevity, and auspiciousness; his Dharma wheel turns unceasingly; his Dharma lineage spreads eternally; the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is perfect and the Dharma lineage spreads eternally, benefiting all sentient beings. I thank all Dharma brothers and fellow believers for listening patiently.
