1342:Appreciation for the Guru’s Incomparable Benevolence

Prostrations to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the Lineage gurus, Dharma Protector Achi, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Greetings, fellow believers and Dharma brothers. I am Chen Su Zhen from Group Four, and my dharma name is Hui Fa Drolma. I am grateful to Rinpoche for bestowing upon me the opportunity to openly repent, repenting for the evil karma and unvirtuous collective karma my family and I have committed in this lifetime and from accumulated past lifetimes, and to share with you how the guru has helped my family members and me.

The fate origin of my refuge was that my mother was diagnosed with end-stage lung cancer on April 7, 2003, and was told by the doctor that she had only six months to live. At that time, my mother said, ‘If something grows abnormally because of an illness and cannot be treated, then I am not afraid of death. I feel that being human is very painful. I do not want to reincarnate anymore, and want to be by Buddha’s side.’ As a nursing professional, when I learned that my mother had lung cancer, I felt extremely desperate and terrified, with nowhere to turn for help. Because I knew that medical treatment could not give my mother appropriate help, I could only implore that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would help my mother to ease the pain caused by the illness and that she would not suffer too much in facing death. At that time, I did not know who could help me.

It was not until September 23, 2003, over five months after my mother became ill, that I learned that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had long been benefiting sentient beings through Buddha Dharma. I immediately registered to seek an audience. At my first audience, Rinpoche asked, ‘What is it?’ Choking back tears, I answered that my mother had lung cancer. Rinpoche then asked, ‘What is your mother’s job?’ I answered, ‘My mother is a housewife, but my mother’s family made a living by fishing. When I was young, my family received a great deal of help from my maternal grandfather and grandmother.’ Rinpoche then expounded, ‘I see that fish eggs cover the entire left side.’ Rinpoche then pointed to my mother’s left chest and said, ‘Many fish and aquatic beings complain to me, and this is terrible. Everyone in your family must come to attend the pujas. You should not eat any seafood anymore, not even one fish, one shrimp, or one clam, because this is karmic bloom, and it has just begun.’

Rinpoche then moved his hand to scan over my mother’s palm from a distance, and said to her, ‘You had two abortions.’ As my mother did not answer for some time, I foolishly replied, ‘Only one!’ Rinpoche said again, ‘Two!’ Then I heard my mother slowly say, ‘But that one had not yet formed.’At that time, Rinpoche sternly rebuked my mother, ‘Why have you still not repented!’ I looked at my mother and instinctively took her hand, knelt on the floor, and prostrated to Rinpoche for repentance. Rinpoche said, ‘It is not repenting to me!’ I said to my mother, ‘We repent to the children you had removed and to the sentient beings!’To be honest, what was repentance? I did not understand then, nor did I know how to repent. Yet I naturally repented together with my mother to Rinpoche and the sentient beings at that moment. From that audience, I received Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) teachings, and then took refuge in 2004. For details of the trace of Rinpoche helping my mother, please refer to Article No. 1211 on the Traces of Liberating Beings.

On April 8, 2004, my father sought an audience with His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the first time. Rinpoche compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) reminded my father, ‘Your liver is not well. Do not drink alcohol anymore. How old are you?’ My father answered, ‘I’m 65 years old.’ Rinpoche then expounded, ‘You have drunk enough, haven’t you? Enough, haven’t you?’ From that day on, my parents began to be vegetarian. Under Rinpoche’s blessings, my father didn’t drink alcohol anymore, and my parents took refuge in Rinpoche together. I am grateful to Rinpoche!

Between February 3 and 4, 2006, His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed Phowa Dharma four times consecutively, to the point that his heart pulse stopped. On the afternoon of February 4, I was also outside the Glorious Jewel and could not enter. The Dharma brothers outside were all very worried and said in tears, ‘Rinpoche’s heart pulse stopped after performing Phowa Dharma four times consecutively.’ That day, I came there for the purpose of prostrating and making offerings to Rinpoche on behalf of my mother. After hearing what the Dharma brothers said, I was extremely frightened and terrified, worried that I would never see Rinpoche again. Since I could not enter, I waited alone outside. Unexpectedly, shortly afterward, a Dharma brother opened the door and let me in. I am grateful to Rinpoche for accepting my prostrations and offerings on behalf of my mother and sentient beings. I am grateful that when Rinpoche’s heart pulse stopped, Rinpoche, disregarding his own safety, still compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) kept sentient beings in his mind and unceasingly benefited sentient beings.

My mother passed away on February 20, 2006. At that time, Rinpoche was in retreat in India, thousands of miles away. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s compassion (maitrī and karuṇā) and blessings, which enabled my mother, during her limited lifespan, to hear Buddha Dharma and quickly accumulate good fortune, thus having the fate to receive consciousness transference through the incomparably wondrous Phowa Dharma performed by Rinpoche at the time of her passing. Rinpoche once expounded, ‘No matter who you are or where you are, as long as you need me, I will surely be by your side.’ Therefore, whenever sentient beings are suffering or implore for help, no matter where they are, Rinpoche will surely spare no effort and disregard his own life to help all sentient beings in the Six Realms to be free from suffering and attain happiness through Buddha Dharma.

During his lifetime, my father suffered from hypertension and intervertebral disc herniation (commonly called a bone spur). When it recurred in 2014, the pain was so severe that he could not walk, and his blood pressure was extremely high. However, after treatment at the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic, he improved very quickly. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) protection, which enabled my father to receive a lessened effect of heavy karmic retribution; I am also grateful for the excellent physicians and precious Chinese herbal medicine at the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic, which helped us condition our body and maintain stable health.

On April 11, 2018, my father passed away from a malignant sarcoma. I am grateful to Rinpoche for compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) blessing and protecting my father’s consciousness and for transferring his consciousness during the Chod Puja. After my father passed away, when I sought an audience with Rinpoche and made an offering to Rinpoche, I answered beside the point. Rinpoche refused to accept my offering and strongly reprimanded me, saying that I was mental and talking nonsense. I was irreverent toward Rinpoche, so my family members were irreverent toward the guru. Because I did not practice according to the teachings, was self-righteous, was fond of being calculating and easy to get angry, and did not correct my behavior, I caused afflictions in the people around me. When Rinpoche reprimanded me, I knew extremely clearly that it was my own problem. For so many years, my parents and I had already received immense protection. It was because I was ungrateful and also caused my family members to be ungrateful. All of this was my fault, and I should repent for it all.

At noon on May 12, 2018, in Luodong, Yilan, my elder sister was riding a scooter with me when we were involved in a serious traffic accident with an intercity bus. Both the scooter and we were thrown into the air. I originally thought I was going to die, but I was not afraid at that moment. Naturally, I thought of Rinpoche’s benevolence in transferring the consciousness of my parents and the sentient beings killed by my family, so I kept saying, ‘I am grateful to Rinpoche!’ Unexpectedly, everything suddenly came to a stop. I felt as though I had been gently placed on the ground in a sitting position, and then the ambulance and police arrived immediately. When they asked about my condition, I answered, ‘I am grateful for His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s protection. I am fine!’

In such a serious traffic accident, I suffered only minor abrasions, while my elder sister received three stitches in her right palm. I am grateful for Rinpoche’s incomparably wondrous blessing power, which made both my sister and me receive a lessened effect of heavy karmic retribution. When the bus driver came to the hospital emergency room to visit us, his face was pale, as though he had been greatly frightened, and he said that he had not seen us. Seeing how frightened he was, I thought of Rinpoche’s compassion (maitrī and karuṇā) towards sentient beings, so I immediately said to the driver, ‘Don’t worry! I will not sue you.’ Rinpoche once expounded that everything that happens is a manifestation of fate and karma. I am grateful to Rinpoche!

I am currently working as a school nurse at a municipal high school in Taipei. The school library displays the book Happiness and Suffering written by His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. On the afternoon of Sunday, January 8, 2012, a fire alarm went off in the library building. The fire started on the first basement floor, and a total of 37 fire engines were dispatched to put out the fire. After the fire, the first basement floor was completely destroyed and required reconstruction, while the library on the first and second floors suffered no damage at all. I firmly believe that it was because the Happiness and Suffering written by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was displayed in the library that the library could be spared from being engulfed by the large, strong fire. A Dharma brother asked Rinpoche about this, and Rinpoche compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) expounded, ‘Because there is Buddha Dharma inside.’ I am grateful for Rinpoche’s compassionate (maitrī and karuṇā) blessings, which make the school library free from being engulfed by the large, strong fire. Please refer to Article No. 509 on the Traces of Liberating Beings for details.

I have problems with arrhythmia, heart valves, and rheumatoid arthritis. Whenever I feel unwell, the precious Chinese herbal medicines from the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic have extremely rapid therapeutic effects on physical ailments and health maintenance. Although I often develop herpes zoster, it also quickly gets better each time after I apply Bao Yuan Gao. I am grateful to the guru for allowing me to receive a lessened effect of heavy karmic retribution.

The delicious and nutritious Japanese foods from the Glorious Jewel offer a rich and diverse selection, making them ideal for personal use or as gifts. They allow me to broadly forge virtuous fate with sentient beings through delicious Japanese foods. The food ingredients at Glorious Jewel restaurants are fresh, hygienic, delicious, and healthy, and I often invite friends to dine there together. I am grateful to Rinpoche for finding so many healthy and delicious foods for everyone to enjoy, which are greatly beneficial to our health and also pretty and presentable for gift-giving.

I am grateful to the guru for bestowing the opportunities and benevolence that allow my relatives and friends, and me, to have the fate and good fortune to donate to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. I am grateful to the Founding Abbot Guru, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for building the Buddhist Monastery, allowing us to frequently visit and pay homage to the Buddhist Monastery in Taiwan. I hope that my relatives and friends and I, before impermanence comes, can grasp the opportunities to visit and pay homage. While we are still able to move about independently, we must make good use of every opportunity to frequently visit and pay homage to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and continually praise Rinpoche’s compassion (maitrī and karuṇā) and vow to benefit sentient beings.

Learning Buddhism is not only for oneself. I have seen that the guru never considers himself at all. To allow more people to draw close to the guru and Buddha Dharma, the guru has used many virtuous and skillful Dharma methods. More than 20 years ago, when my grandmother passed away, my eldest cousin and I recited the Amitabha Sutra together for my grandmother. At that time, I only remembered that the sutra repeatedly praised the incredible merits of Amitabha Buddha. While reciting it, I kept wondering: what are these incredible merits? After so many years since taking refuge, I have seen, heard, and experienced His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche manifesting many kinds of incredible great abilities to propagate Buddha Dharma and rescue sentient beings. I am grateful to Rinpoche for benefiting vast numbers of sentient beings while seeking neither fame nor gain, asking for nothing, and at the risk of his own life; even when Rinpoche’s heart pulse stopped, Rinpoche still did not forget to show mercy to sentient beings and benefit sentient beings.

I repent for my mother’s family making a living by fishing, and my father’s family making a living by selling fish, killing fish, and producing fish paste. I also repent that, in raising their children and making a living, my parents continuously harm sentient beings by raising, killing, and eating chickens, ducks, pigs, fish, aquatic beings, and sentient beings in the fields; these sentient beings were killed and harmed, and I repent for each one and repent to the sentient beings that my family and I have harmed in this life and from accumulated past lifetimes.

His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately (maitrī and karuṇā) teaches us that every day we should examine and correct our body, speech, and mind, and should not violate the Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas. When I examined myself, I discovered that I have a narrow-minded heart, and I deeply repent. Every mistake, whether big or small, is my own fault. I know I was wrong, and when I was wrong, I should change, rather than find many reasons to explain why I acted that way. This is refusing to admit my mistakes, being irresponsible, and lacking a mind of repentance. I was wrong, and I repent. I am grateful for the guru’s vast compassion (maitrī and karuṇā) and incomparably wondrous teachings.

I pray for His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s good health, longevity, and auspiciousness; his Dharma wheel turns unceasingly; he abides enduringly in this world; the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Monastery of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche benefits vast sentient beings; His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma lineage spreads eternally. I am grateful to Rinpoche! I thank all Dharma brothers and fellow believers for listening patiently.
