Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

August 16, 2011

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious puja, to perform the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha Ritual for Ending Calamities and the Chod, at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Kyoto, Japan. The puja was attended by 191 people, including 28 Japanese believers, one believer from India, and 162 disciples which is Taiwanese and Japanese.

After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended the throne, he gave the following precious teachings about Buddha Dharma.

According the sutra, it is named the month of “filial piety” which is the month of July in the Lunar Calendar, as well as the month of August in China. According to the sutra, it is depicted that Maudgalyayana originally learned Hinduism, in order to know where was his mother after she was died, he exerted oneself to learn Buddhism, after that he became the main disciples of Buddha Sakyamuni, who was the first in the attainment of supernatural power could use his supernatural power to know that his mother had fallen into the Realm of Hungry Ghost after her death. The sentient being cannot eat food in the Realm of Hungry Ghost, even if they swallow the food, it will turn into flames while going through the throat, if they feel thirsty, the water will turn into flames while going through the throat. What kind of people would fall into the Realm of Hungry Ghost after death then? Those who don’t practice charities in their lives or they don’t help others, or they prevent others from practicing charities and offerings, or even regret their practice of charities will fall into the Realm of Hungry Ghost after they die. Once the sentient being would fall into the Realm of Hungry, it would endure the time which is equal to 1,500 years for the worldly time.

Maudgalyayana used his supernatural power to carry some food in order to let his mother eat something; however when his mother swallowed the food, it will turn into flames while going through the throat and thus she was unable to eat anything. Maudgalyayana beseeched Buddha Sakyamuni to help her mother, therefore Buddha Sakyamuni instructed Maudgalyayana that the Sangha were about to come out of their retreat and instructed Maudgalyayana to make offerings to the Sangha who would come out of their summer retreat in order to dedicate the merits and virtues to his mother. As a result, his mother could liberate from Hungry Ghost Realm and attain rebirth in the Heaven Realm. This is the origin of Ullambana Festival. Therefore, the sutra said that if one is genuinely with filial piety, one should learn Buddhism. From this point, it is not an easy task for liberating a sentient being; such like Maudgalyayana had attained a level of Arhat, he was unable to liberate his mother by himself, you should not think that it could liberate someone only by burning a wood. If it was true, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was no need to cultivate Buddhism as well.

Buddha dharma talked about cause and effect which is not superstition, The Buddha dharma about cause and effect means you have done the cause, it would definitely have an effect. The words you have said, the things you have done, the things you have thought, all would have retributions. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw a television show a while ago, it described the modern scientists had found, any action a human had done, would leave a signal in the universe, this could be described as the cause and effect talked about from the Buddha dharma. For example, the reason why a person would have high blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes, high blood lipids, all of those were caused by killing. It had been proven medically, a person who likes to eat meats, who would have many health conditions when getting old. It was recorded on the Buddhist scriptures, the mother of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha likes to eat turtle eggs when alive, after death she then fell into the hell.

Prior to 36 years old Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche loves to eat meat, seafood, including fish, shrimp, crabs, oysters, they must be alive otherwise would not eat. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s sister, younger brother, younger sister all had brain surgery, all the male in the family had high blood pressure, that is because the generation of great grandfather of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was doing the silk business, killed a lot of silkworms, therefore, since the great grandfather of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to the generation of the father of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, all the male in the family would not live over 55 years old. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also had high blood pressure before 45 years old, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not take any medications or received any medical treatments, now there is no high blood pressure, these were because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche through the practices of cultivating Buddhism, therefore the karmic retribution of himself were turned. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is already 64 years old, but the health conditions got better and better, the average pulse is 62 times a minute, these were because of being a vegetarian and cultivating Buddhism. All of the men who wanted to be like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche with good health, then should be a vegetarian; the women wanted to be pretty then even more need to be vegetarian, the women who ate meat would get older faster.

Today the cultivation is Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, in China, Japan, Korea, many people know Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, In China, Japan, Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha were presenting an ordained appearance, but in Tibetan Buddhism Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha were presenting a lay practitioner appearance. In Japan, many people believed in and worship Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, on many intersections, in graveyards, the statue of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha could be seen. Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha not only help the sentient beings from the ghost realms and hell realms as you believed, the word 〝ground〞from the name of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha does not mean the hell, on the other hand, it means Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s compassion is like the vast ground, nurtures the sentient being to cultivate Buddha dharma. 〝Conceal〞then means the concealed treasure of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. What is the conceal treasure of Buddha and Bodhisattva? This means Boddhicitta, the true nature of Buddha and Bodhisattvas, allowing all the sentient beings to obtain benefits.

Buddha Sakyamuni introduced the Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows in the hope to help sentient beings. One of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s vows is not to achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied. Since Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha doesn’t hope that sentient beings in six realms will enter into vicious realms, Ksitigarbha then help teaching them to learn Buddha Dharma. The six realms include Heaven Realm, Asura Realm, Human Realm, Hell Realm, Hungry Ghost Realm, and Animal Realm. Because of such a great vow, Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha is one of the eight great Bodhisattvas which are called Maha Bodhisattvas in Sanskrit. There are ten Bhumis (grounds) for different achievement of Bodhisattvas, from first to the tenth. Those who have achieved the grounds above the tenth are called Maha Bodhisattvas.

Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to conduct the puja and gave the following enlightenment. According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, originally the dharma texts would not be distributed to attendees when performing the dharma. Japanese, however, are more suspicious so the dharma texts were distributed and you can read the text. The representatives to make mandala offering were selected by drawing lots when believers entered the venue. On behalf of sentient beings, they made mandala offering to the Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who would conduct the puja. And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the following enlightenment. The ritual of mandala offering is a way of making offering. Since you have not accumulated sufficient merits, mandala offering can help you to accumulate merits and thus you can have enough merits to be helped by Buddha Dharma.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to teach the meanings of the arousal of aspiration and motivation while attending pujas. If you attend the puja out of curiosity, the karmic effect in the future is that people will be curious about you. If you attend the puja with suspicion, people will be suspicious about you. If you come here for obtaining more knowledge or with the attitude of attending to a class, the karmic effect is that you can’t learn Buddha Dharma in the future. While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts the rituals, you shouldn’t have the mindset that you want to know what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is doing. Unless you are Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s guru, the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, you will not know what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is doing.

Conducting this puja can help sentient beings to obtain safety and peace. If, however, attendees participate in this puja only for the purposes of having successful careers, maintaining happy families, or seeking protection, the effects will be quite limited. Attendees should keep the hope as Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, which is to wish sentient beings to be liberated from suffering. You are one of all sentient beings. For instance, the Tohoku earthquake of Japan has more or less influenced the entire Japan. Only when all people can attain peace and happiness, you will. Do not think that smoking, being drunk or enjoying delicious food is happiness.

To perform this puja requires a practitioner to have an undefiled mind and bodhichitta. This puja can’t be performed by any practitioner. The next ritual is a terma transmitted directly by a Vajravarahi. After that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to give the following enlightenment. The venue to conduct the dharma of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha must be a clean and pure place. It can’t be performed at your home. The venue must be a place where no killing or slaughtering animals has taken place. It can’t be a grave yard or a crematory. No war or natural disaster should occur to the place, either. According to Kyoto history, the location of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Kyoto once was inhabited by ambassadors of Ching Dynasty. In the past hundred years, there was no disaster occurred here. Thus, it is a very suitable place to conduct the puja.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted rituals to bless the land and transformed it into the Pure Land, to bless the house and transformed it into the palace of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, to bless your cushions and transformed them into the lotus blossoms of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to conduct dharma rituals and instructed the attendees to be in tall kneeling position so as to perform the ritual of invoking. In the ancient time, according to the tradition of invoking Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, people would offer followers with both hands. Today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also let the attendees together to hold petals in both hands with a tall kneeling position to invoke Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The present would take the hardship for a while.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the participants to recite the prayer of the dharma text. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche red it first and then the participants followed accordingly. There was a word in the prayer that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pronounced it differently from the version of the dharma text in the attendees’ hands. However, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees to read three times of the prayer, the disciples did not attentively listen to their Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma voice but self-righteously pronounced differently. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately pointed out the mistake the attendees just made. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reminded the attendees that they should not think they can read and pronounce it carelessly. The pronunciation guru made was the right one. Nevertheless, the attendees just recited the prayer according to their reading of the dharma text rather than listening to their Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching. They couldn’t count as followers!

Compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let all present to step forwards to the mandala one after one to bestow blessing with prayer beads placing on the top of head of every believers and disciples. The attendees stepped to the mandala in order and reverently receive it with gratitude. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is so honorable but, regardless of his painstaking, exhausted his energy to bestow all present blessing. It was really of such great merits that the participants had the opportunity to receive the Mahasiddha’s help!

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained to the attendees the practice being performed, which was composed of the preliminary, the main practice, and the dedication. The preliminary is your motivation for participating in today’s puja. The main practice is the major part of today’s practice. The dedication is to practice generosity with meritorious virtues accumulated through today’s puja towards the sentient beings that are related or unrelated to us. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees in the recitation of the heart mantra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha and mantras in the Dharma text. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained that mantras are the meritorious virtues, wisdom, vows, loving kindness, and compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. When one recites mantras of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, he or she keeps in mind the meritorious virtues, wisdom, vows, loving kindness, and compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Nevertheless, only mantras recited by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can truly bless the sentient beings. Those recited by you cannot. According to the Dharma text, if the attendees have not got enough reverence or are distracted, it is prayed that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can forgive them. Also, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas salvage the sentient beings in accordance with their cause and condition. Originally, the officiating guru would explain The Commentary on Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha Dharani Sutra in the Dharma text. However, as you do not have such patience, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would simply take some efforts to recite this sutra for you.

At this time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche spoke to a believer who was looking around and further said that the person who was looking around actually lacked patience as he did not look at Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but somewhere else.

The practice of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha being performed today would have taken an entire day. Additionally, you would have been led in the recitation of The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows, which should have taken 3 to 4 hours. However, Japanese believers did not have such patience. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been to many Buddhist monasteries in Japan. Most of them finished their rituals within 15 minutes or so and then the believers would leave the monastery after that. Only when they hold pujas for releasing souls from purgatory would the pujas take more than 1 hour. Today, you do not have the time, nor the patience to recite the entire sutra. You have the time to drink, watch TV, and have chats, but you don’t have the time to recite a sutra. Therefore, in order to correspond with the local culture, the recitation of The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows would not be conducted. The attendees merely looked at the open sutra held in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s hand, which meant that the attendees actually read the sutra.

Thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to perform the practice and saw the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas off. Then, the dedication rituals were conducted. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further explained a piece of prayer in the Dharma text, saying that this practice can lengthen one’s lifespan, accumulate one’s fortune, and uncover one’s wisdom. Furthermore, one will be granted with luck, peace, and prosperity. However, those meat eaters won’t have any of these. In addition, your lengthened lifespan should not be spent on completing tasks you want to achieve or your witnessing your children’s weddings. It is supposed to be spent on the practice of Buddhism and allow you to help other people with extra physical strength.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has exhausted all his efforts to help sentient beings and to promote Buddhism. In Taiwan, on every Saturday, there have always been more than 200 believers who came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. All of them had illnesses. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has usually not advertised himself, has not received interviews from reporters, or has never publicized himself through mass media. In Taiwan, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has more than 1100 disciples who have taken refuge and followed Rinpoche to learn Buddhism. One day before the day of coming to Japan, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had just presided over a great puja that had more than 22000 attendees. The next day after the completion of the great puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately took a flight to Japan and just arrived in Japan at 11:30 last night. Today, from the afternoon to the evening, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts dharmas to help all of the participants. How did so many people come to attend the pujas? They were brought to the pujas by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In Japan, similar to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s behaviors in Taiwan, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not done any advertisement, but just laboriously and diligently promotes Buddhism and hopes that these pujas can let you be moved and determine to practice Buddhism. Fortunately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s health is getting better and will have enough time to wait till you decide to practice Buddhism sooner or later.

After the perfect conduction of the Ritual of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva for Ending Calamities, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked all attendees to take a 15 minutes break, and would conduct the Chod ritual for everyone after the break. All participants simultaneously thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and stood up and waited for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to leave the Dharma Throne temporarily.

After the break, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended the Dharma Throne again and conducted the auspicious Chod ritual for all attendees. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened people that the Chod ritual is one of the eight most important dharmas of Tibetan Buddhism. All of you know that Buddhism was originated from India. Chinese Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism were all transmitted from India. But the only dharma that was transmitted back to India is the Chod ritual Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is going to conduct today.

The Chod ritual was created by a female lay practitioner who had married and had children 1200 years ago in Tibet. The purpose of conducting the Chod ritual is mainly for your suffering as well as for your happiness. The reason for your suffering is from your pursuit of happiness. You should know that all suffering is the result of pursuing happiness.

According to the dharma text of the Chod ritual, when conducting the ritual, a practitioner has to take off all objects of protections from their body. During the Chod ritual, the practitioner, through visualizing and contemplating, would transform their own blood, flesh, and bones into nectar and let sentient beings eat the nectar such that the sentient beings would feel happy after eating the nectar and then accept the help of Buddhism. The Chod ritual is particularly effective for serious illnesses, especially those illnesses that cannot be cured by doctors or those illnesses that are caused by the harm from ghosts or gods. In what kind of conditions will a person be harmed by ghosts or gods? For example, when one has done some evil deeds, deceives others, does business dishonestly, commits adultery while being a wife, does not raise one’s wife or give her money while being a husband, and so on, one will be harmed by ghosts or gods.

Because there would be the Daimonji Gozan Fire Festival at 8:00 PM tonight, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would complete the Chod ritual before the beginning of the festival so that everyone could have the opportunity to watch the event. Next, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to conduct the auspicious Chod ritual. Rinpoche instructed the attendees to say 3 times their own names and the names of their relatives and friends they wanted to help who are still alive, and to say 3 times the names of their relatives and friends they wanted to help who have passed away.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is 64 years old already.  In the afternoon, he unceasingly enlightened to the public and performed Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha Ritual for Ending Calamities dharma for 2 hours. After taking a break, he continued enlightening to the public and performed Chod Dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not regard his toil at all and modestly seated on the dharma throne to unceasingly shake the hand drum while performing dharma. He recited and performed dharma for beings. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had enlightened before: the practitioners in Vajra Vehicle benefit beings with their whole lives! Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was laborious for many hours, he burst out loud sound, which was like the thunder and shocked people so much, for several times while performing Chod Dharma. It showed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s achievement for practicing auspicious Tantric Dharma.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly conducted the auspicious Chod Dharma and gave the short enlightenment to attendees:

To advice everyone again, if you diet meats after today’s puja, you should not plead for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas anymore afterward. Fortunately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is so healthy that can wait for you to learn Buddhism. Because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would live longer than you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told you something which would make males in place envy so much. Namely, in the night Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can sleep well until sunrise and need not go to the toilet. If having to get up in the night, the quality of sleep would be impacted naturally and the stamina would be worse. As to how healthy Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is, one Japanese believer clearly understands. Because the Japanese believer, as well as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, likes to drive fast. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche drives the ultimate sports car in Taiwan. If driving fast car, one could not bear it without the healthy cardio. Furthermore, people who drive fast should have sharp eyes. If you hope to be as healthy as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the future, you should be obedient and not to diet meat or smoke.

Daimonji Festival would be start soon at 8 pm. As a result, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hurried to finish conducting dharma before that because of knowing that your action was slow. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche especially arranged the catering. There would be the buffet in the yard of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Kyoto in order that everyone can enjoy the foods and view Daimonji Festival at the same time. The attended everyone thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in chorus for the careful arrangement. Furthermore, they thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for compassionately conducting dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who does not consider his toil, performed the auspicious Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha Ritual for Ending Calamities and the Chod Dharma to benefit beings in Japan and even the countless beings in the empty.
