Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei, enlightened the direction and important points of cultivating Buddhism. After the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceeded to meet believers from 4:50 pm to 6:10 pm gave enlightenment to 41 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world.

Before the puja, there was one couple of disciples accompanying with their two sons, who all are Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples, shared the experiences of their family members were helped by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

First of all, their junior son who is a student expressed that he was grateful that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed this opportunity to let him share the process of the extraordinary compassionate blessings bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche when he was injured by a car accident and hospitalized at the hospital.

It was around 10:00 PM, on Jun 03, 2011, when he was riding a bicycle and passing through a crossroads, there was a bus right turned on red, and he was knocked over and slipping within hailing distance to fall down. His left ankle was run over by the wheel of that bus which was unable to brake immediately. Upon he witnessed that his leg was run over the huge wheels, he immediately visualized the figure of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and prayed to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to bestow the blessing. The driver got off the bus to look at him, and drove the bus in reverse in order to put his leg out from the bus. At the meantime, he could able to see his ankle which had been mutilated beyond recognition, as well as his left leg was numbing, but he did not feel suffering at all.

When he arrived at the hospital, after the doctor took one hour to have a surgical operation on his leg, his left calcaneus and the bone of second toe had a crack, but there was no fracture, his left ankle with a large area of necrosis on the skin and muscle was removed mostly. The flesh on his heel had been peeled off from the bone; it would be possible to cut it off upon discovering the necrosis. Besides, his left face and some of joints had the abrasion, but the blood vessel, the ligament, and major nerve at the ankle was not injured.

The next day was Saturday, which was the time that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche met the believers. He went back to the Buddhist center by wheelchair and met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He reported to his condition to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just talked to him “Never mind, it will be gradually recovered after one week” and reminded him to take the Chinese medicine and avoid eating the sour or cold food. He expressed that he would like to make repentance, his guru replied to him “You never thought about making repentance until you have trouble?”, and did not accept their offerings. When he was moved backward in front of his guru, his guru still continually recited mantra to bestow the blessing to him.

Originally his left toes was swollen and squeezed together, on the next day, when he attended the puja and returned to hospital, he found that his left toes were able to disjoin and his toes could use the cotton stick to clean the wounds and spread with the Bao-Yuan Ointment. He was very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for all that he had done. Especially his guru had to meet 200-odd believers on Saturday, they had taken refuge for many years, but he still needed to consume his guru’s energy and merits, he was regretful for that.

The following Saturday after the puja, he again met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the Buddhist center and reported the condition of his wound. Guru simply replied to him “Nothing, Don’t be afraid” and compassionately accepted his offering. On the next day, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened them again in the puja. Not only they were reluctant to make offering and donation, but also they did not have the gratitude to guru for the helps of past many years.

He was very grateful to Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his merciful blessings and protection. With the blessings and protection, he didn’t feel much pain and his heavy karmic retributions could be paid back lightly.

A few days later, the doctor informed him that the operation had been changed from skin to flesh grafting (a micro-surgery to transplant skin flap and veins). Therefore, the primary physician should be changed accordingly. At the same time, suddenly he was informed that the operation would take place at 7 AM the next morning and all the procedures would be done in one operation so his flesh would be directly grafted. Although the news stroke all of a sudden, he still could think of the Guru’s words “Don’t be afraid; nothing will happen.” That evening, he prayed to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and A-Chi Dharma Protector for making the best arrangement for him. When he was sent to the operation room the next day, he kept visualizing the Guru.

After 11-hour procedure of micro-surgery, he felt chilled all over his body when he woke up from the general anesthesia. Additionally, he felt pressured at the part where he was pressed during the long-hour surgery. He could see his left thigh was bandaged and the left ankle was extremely bulged. It was not until then did he know that doctors had grafted flesh from his left thigh to fill in the defected left ankle. He then was sent to ICU for observation.

His recovery proceeded very fast. Usually it would take five days to return to normal ward. For him, it only took three and a half days. At the beginning, his face was covered with an oxygen mask and he was inserted with catheters. On his right arm, to draw blood, nurses had inserted a needle into his artery. The large intravenous drip on his groin was used to inject various anticoagulants, antibiotics, and other medications. Different kinds of sensors were attached to his body and right hand to monitor his heart rate and oxygen concentration. However, these monitoring equipments, catheters, and needles on his right arm were removed before he left the ICU. He stopped taking most medications within one week. Moreover, he could begin rehabilitation the afternoon he left the ICU. Because of his fast recovery, he was able to attend to the 794th Anniversary Lord Jigten Sumgon Memorial Grand Puja and the regular puja the next day, both being presided by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. If he had stayed in the ICU for more days, he would only have experienced more medical tortures, without being able to participate in the auspicious Grand Puja performed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

During the period of hospitalization, he started to deeply realize the torture of disease, as what His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever enlightened. When he underwent the operation, he lay on the operation table and was anaesthetized. He was just like the meat on the chopping board to be partitioned by others at will. When he was in hospital, he could not move at will but needed to eat, drink, and excrete on a small sickbed. When nurse changed dressings or checked, even his private part was all uncovered and he felt he just lost his dignity. In hospital, he met people in various kinds of pains and suffering, such as someone who accidentally had ambustion in job, got to be hospitalized many times, and has suffered like this for almost 20 years; someone who was injected with pain-killer in maximum volume still could not stand the pain; and someone who had a car accident, when at the age of younger than 20, had intracranial hemorrhage, lost his teeth, his hair all shaved, being intubated with nasogastric tube and catheter.

Compared to those beings in pains and suffering, he was so lucky due to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing! Although he got hurt seriously in the car accident, his blood vessel, muscle tendon, and main nerve did not get hurt at all. Nor did he have bone fracture. Pressed by the heavy bus, in normal case, he would have had amputation. Besides, during the process of medical treatment, he hardly took anodyne. He merely took some anodyne tablets in the beginning, and then he just found he did not feel pain even if he took no anodyne. So he just stopped taking it. Moreover, he recovered very soon. Around ten days after the major operation he underwent, he experienced another operation to remove slough for tissue molding. Even the later substitute doctor wondered how it could be executed in such a short time! For all of these he was thankful for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing! He had immense gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

At the same time, he verbalized his repentance for not being serious enough in learning Buddhism in the past. He failed to carry out the teachings bestowed by the guru in real life and still lived his life in his own way. As to the practice means taught by the guru, he practiced it only when it occurred to him. He took the matter lightly and was very lazy. He failed to praise the guru’s meritorious virtues, nor did he examine himself daily to see if he had violated the precepts as instructed by the guru. He regretted eating meat in the past, especially seafood such as tuna and clam. He had kept silkworms and birds in cages. The worms died either of disease or hunger. Some were even squeezed by him and revealed their intestines. His birds had bloody fights among them and eventually died. He even had caught hundreds of tadpoles and kept them in a small basin of water. Some died of hunger or killed each other. He had dissected a frog, watched other people’s killing snakes, and even chased after insects. Additionally, he had barbecued many times during the Moon Festival. What’s more, he often failed to keep his promise. He always broke his own promise or called it off, making the sentient beings suffer. He did not keep fixed hours. As a student, he failed to fulfill his own responsibility of studying and made his life a mess. He asked that the attendees could regard him as a bad example and should never become an evil person like him.

At last, he expressed his gratitude to the venerable Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again. Without the blessing of the guru, he would not have kept his left leg and might have even lost his life. From now on, he decided to learn the orthodox teachings earnestly under His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche so as to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. In addition, he thanked many Dharma brothers for their assistance, care, and encouragement during this period of time.

Then, the mother shared how His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had come to the family’s rescue many times.

She sought refuge with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on January 11th, 2003. At that time, she suffered great losses from the Typhoon Nari as her factory was flooded. Through a Dharma brother, she was able to seek an audience with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who told her that she should consult the bank again to negotiate the funds needed and that she would receive more orders in the eighth month on the lunar calendar. Just as expected, everything that the guru said came true and her factory was saved. She felt very grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

In 2004, she expanded her factory facilities and implored His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to perform a purifying ritual for her company. When the guru entered the altar room, took a seat, and began to recite mantras, the guru immediately pointed to a direction and said that there was a temple of Land Lord in that direction. It was true! The guru instructed that a certain place in the company should be separated and that she should employ a security service agency to protect her company from burglary. In particular, the guru bid them to make offerings properly and continued to ask about her business in a fatherly manner. She felt very grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The next week, the company located below hers was burglarized. The thief broke the glass of the main door and went straight in, causing great damage.

In 2006, her father suffered from severe vertebral fractures. Because of the blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her father did not have to undergo the major operation on his spine. Instead, he only had to have bone cement injected into his vertebrae and underwent a very minor operation. As of today, her father not only lived freely, but was also able to take a trip to Japan for the Chod puja performed on a tram. All of this was the protection and blessing bestowed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

In 2004, her youngest son had a car accident. Although his shank fractured into six pieces, miraculously, his shank did not need a surgery to immobilize the fractured bones. Only a simple reduction was performed on the shank and then a plaster cast was applied to immobilize the shank. These simple procedures just healed the fractured shank bone fully. Originally, the doctor had said that the healing condition of the shank bone was not good. However, surprisingly, after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate blessings, his son’s pain was reduced and the plaster cast was removed two months earlier. And for many years since then his son has moved freely without any sequala.

In 2006, her oldest son suddenly had pneumothorax. Before getting ill, he had attended a Chod puja presided over by the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It had been the first Chod puja in Taiwan presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that had used the important Dharma tool bestowed by His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang for the first time; the Dharma tool had been used originally by His Holiness personally to conduct Chod pujas. That day, her oldest son had been responsible for cleaning the toilet during the puja. When using the Dharma tool to bless all participants, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had especially instructed all people in the toilet must come out so that her son had attained the great blessings. Because of that, when having pneumothorax, her son did not need a surgery for treatment and recovered quickly, with minimum pain and no sequala. She is very grateful to the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for Rinpoche’s compassionate rescue and protection.

Then, the father reported his stories to all attendees. In 2010, there was a big flood in SuAuo. His parents’ house was in the vicinity of the Bai-Yuan Temple and was also hit brutally by mudflows and landslides. During the flooding, no children of their family could enter the house to accompany their parents; all of them were helpless. However, his parents were still safe, just frightened. All of the houses in the town of SuAuo were all flooded, destroyed and collapsed. However, the ancestral residence of his family was left intact. Some neighbors died; some were nearly buried alive by landslides. Without Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate protection, the consequences would have really been unimaginable. He is very grateful to the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for even protecting all of his family members.

In May, 2009, the disciple’s company was facing closing. Because of the compassionate blessings from the guru, their business was revived. Originally, the major customer had announced to change the processing partner and would no longer trade with his company. Because His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche heavily bestowed blessings upon him, on the next day the customer immediately claimed to continue cooperating with his company. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saved him again. If it were not His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s saving, his all family would get broken and dead. They were the disciples who ate in the same restaurant with the guru but pretended as not seeing the guru. They had no guru in their heart, were ingrate, as well as were unwilling to make offerings and giving.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saves their all family and his business repeatedly. But he even had not any heart of appreciation and offering to respect the life-savor. He cannot be counted as human beings. The guru does not accept their offerings, not allow them to participate aboard puja, as well as not permit them to be volunteers. He very thanked that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave him so auspicious dharma-teaching, which warns him deeply to know the importance of offering and giving.

By this opportunity, he revealed to repent together: He is self-regard, reluctant to make offerings and giving, not deeply believe in cause and effect, not believe in impermanence, not praise the guru, not know gratitude, just want to have good days, and just want happiness and does not want sufferings. So he has taken refuge for years but unceasingly commits evil karma. He did not do his work
well and then made his business problematic. He did not praise the guru heartfully and it made none of his family and family come to learn Buddha dharma. The disciple felt himself was the disciple without accepting teachings, did not learn Buddhism well, consume the guru’s energy. He is sorry to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The disciple is foolish and bad but the guru still does not quit. The guru allows them to stay in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to listen to Buddha dharma and gives them the chance. He very thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. From now on, they must act in accordance with teaching, make offerings with heart, being no more lazy and well obey to follow His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to learn Buddha dharma. He also prayed that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could accept the offering from their all family. During the 26-months-long of being unable to make offering to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it was like to sail in the wide ocean. They do not know where the goal is, what the direction is, and where to depend on. They cannot feel stable and concrete in their hearts everyday. The prayed that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could accept the offering from their all family again and let them have the opportunity to accumulate virtues for beings.

They thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and prayed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be healthy, always turns the dharma wheel and lets more people follow the guru to learn Buddha dharma.

At the beginning of the puja, in order to let people realize the correct attitude of leaning Buddhism, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche especially teaches Gampopa’s teaching for the enjoyment of listening to Buddha dharma. It would let people understand that the attendees must have those motives for attending the puja. Gampopa enlightened for the enjoyment of listening to Buddha dharma: We must think about that, for those extensive sentient beings which are as if they are dreamlike or in the emptiness, we must try our best to let them be settled at the level of Bodhi in order to attain Buddhahood; for the sake of this reason, we must try to perfectly attain the realization of Buddhahood; for the sake of this reason, we must try our best to listen, understand, attain the realization, and cultivate those precious teaching. Before listening to the teaching of Buddha dharma, we must have this extraordinary attitude.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further enlightened that those phrases are referring to the purpose of benefiting self and others. We often mentioned that the purpose of benefiting self and others, it means that we would like to have the ability to benefit sentient beings, and liberate sentient beings from reincarnation and reborn in the Pure Land, furthermore they can attain the realization in order to become Buddhahood. Firstly you must attain the level of Buddhahood, and then you have the ability to help others. The purpose of benefiting self is not referring to that you will profit from learning Buddhism, nor will you gain anything which is benefit for you. Therefore it is not referring to satisfy your own desire. It is that one can liberate from reincarnation and attain Buddhahood. The purpose of benefiting others is referring to whether the practitioner has the ability to help sentient beings to attain Buddhahood in the future. For the sake of benefiting others, if the practitioner were unable to liberate himself from death and birth, and attain Buddhahood, how could it be possible to let sentient being liberate from the suffering of reincarnation and attain Buddhahood? If he could not achieve himself firstly, it would be the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

You might think that that is a way of benefiting others when you introduce someone to attend the puja, or let them listen to the enlightenment of Buddha dharma, or you would think that you are liberating someone when you give someone a book of sutra. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that even if you were unable to liberate yourself, how could you liberate others from suffering? We can only consider that we just merely help them to make karmic connection with Three Jewels. At the beginning of learning Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not yet a guru, and he never claimed that he was liberating others. There are two kinds of Tantra, one is for self-cultivating, and another one is for others. Firstly you have to learn the dharma text which is for self-cultivating, when you gradually attain the realization, and then you can learn the dharma methods in order to help for others. It is not like that Exoteric Buddhism always adopts the same sutra no mater it is for yourself or others. For example, someone recited 1000 times or 10,000 times of the Great Compassion Mantra, and he would start to recite the mantra for others. It is totally different. The Exoteric Buddhism is the theory of learning Buddhism, even if you had realized all the theories, you would be unable to help others without knowing the method. It does not mean that the method of Exoteric Buddhism is wrong; it is that the power would be different in accordance with different dharma text. It is just like that when you see a poor man without money, and you would like to help him. At least, you must have money, or you know how to earn money. That is the way that you can help the poor man. The same reason is that if you were unable to achieve the purpose of benefiting self, not to mention that you would like to benefit others. Until now, what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught, which is for the purpose of self-cultivating. Therefore you don’t often talk to others that you would like to recite mantra for someone. When you did not attain the achievement, how would you help others?

For the past 10-odd years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continually enlightened that we must have the correct attitude to learn Buddhism, today Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reminded people again by Gampopa’s teaching, it will be very important for your cultivation in future, whether you will have the obstacle for your cultivation or not, it would be obviously affected by your aspiration and motive at the beginning of learning Buddhism. It is referring to your perception and thought for the motive of listening to Buddha dharma or attending the puja, if you did not have the correct motive, which would directly affect you can liberate from death and birth, and attain Buddhahood. As well as the incorrect motive to attend puja, even if one could learn Tantra, but it would be in vain. It is because that there is no virtue at all, you are unable to help sentient beings when there is no virtue. If you would think that you would be unable to become Buddhahood, you would embed the notion that you are unable to become Buddhahood in your consciousness. Therefore it is very important for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching today; it will be helpful for your cultivation in future.

When we listen to Buddha dharma, we must have this extraordinary attitude: for the sake of benefiting sentient beings by all possible ways, we must try all possible ways to attain the Buddhahood, and try to carefully listen, comprehend in order to attain realization and actual cultivations. In conclusion, for one is listening to the Buddha dharma, having a pure mind is a very important point. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further enlightened that listening, comprehend, attaining realization and implementing cultivation, which was referring for the meaning of study, contemplation, and practice (聞、思、修) before. Although some people think that Buddha dharma needs to be debated, but this is the custom in the historical evolvement. It is still subjective manipulation and implacted by self-attachment. The practitioners should be through the approach of listening, , understanding, realizing and truly practicing to study, contemplation, and practice heartfully without wandering.

Listening is not merely referring to one to hear Buddha dharma; you must listen to Buddha dharma by your heart, not for your benefit. You can comprehend the real meaning of Buddha dharma by the pure mind, and furthermore you can attain realization and implement cultivation. When one attend the puja with a pure mind to listen the Buddha dharma, he will neither squirm his body, nor feel his legs stiff, as well as he will not catnap or yawn in the puja. When you hear Buddha dharma with an impure mind or filling with desire, when the content of teaching would not be satisfied for your desire, you would have other thinkings about ego. It would consume your energy, your perception would be unable to be concentrated, and you would be absentminded. Some people would feel their legs stiff, catnapping, or dizzying. When you did not have the correct motive to listen to the Buddha dharma, of course you are unable to get the blessing from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and as well as the lineage gurus. Most of time, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang used to speak Tibetan to teach Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not learn Tibetan before, but he still pays attention to listen to His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang teaching with a pure mind, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is in the condition of Zen Samadhi to listen to the enlightenment of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. It does not matter when this Buddha dharma will take effective. When you listen to Buddha dharma with a pure mind, you will generate the virtue. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche listens Buddha dharma never yawning or catnapping even if he did not sleep at night. It is a reverent attitude to Buddha dharma.

The sentient beings in the space have the nature which is the same as Buddha. It means that sentient beings possess the condition to become Buddhahood. However only human beings rely on the ears to have the consonance with Buddha dharma, therefore guru needs to teach Buddha dharma by mouth. Human being is through the ears to hear Buddha dharma, attain realization and further to attain Buddhahood. The teaching of Drikung Kagyu Order must be orally transmitted by guru; the listener with a pure mind hears Buddha dharma through his hears, further comprehend Buddha dharma. Since someone has learned Buddha dharma, he would scold others with the rules of Buddha dharma, and talk them that they are breaking a religious precept, they are not correct ways. It is because that before you attaining realization, you would be using your human experience to compare with their behavior. A real realization is that you will fell realization for the deep meaning of Buddha dharma by your heart, not comprehend by the appearance of text. You should not think that you could scold someone when you had learned more Buddha dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever enlightened before, you don’t have the qualification to teach Buddha dharma because you are not guru now. Even if be an ordained person, if you thought that you will liberate people by hearing more Buddha dharma, it is the desire with the notion which is impure as well.

The so-called the worldly experience is disadvantageous to liberate from reincarnation for us. It is because that we would judge the things by the feeling of our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind to decide the right or wrong ,or good or bad. We would choose those things base on our benefit; it is not relative to Buddha dharma. our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind which would be affected by the outer environment, as a result of that, our original pure mind will be changed to have those experience, therefore each of our notions would be looking for profit, which is totally different from the purpose of benefiting self for Buddha dharma. The purpose of benefiting self is referring to change your past selfish notion through Buddha dharma, as well as changing your inner world. Through learning Buddha dharma, you will know the suffering of reincarnation and then you will cultivate yourself. Through cultivating compassion, you will know that sentient beings are in the suffering ocean of reincarnation, you will benefit sentient beings as well. Therefore, for the sake of purpose benefitting others, firstly we must have the ability to liberate from incarnation and attain the Buddhahood. However it is not merely to act by word of mouth or you can achieve it by one life only. For the theory of Exoteric Buddhism, there is also the dharma method to attain Buddhahood, but it needs to take a long long time. For the theory of Esoteric Buddhism, if a practitioner is unable to attain achievement, for the worst of the conditions and capacities, it needs to attain Buddhahood for 17 generations. You don’t think that it would be so short, the interval of each generation may be indefinite in according to the causes and conditions, and it would be dozens of years or hundreds of years. No one would know it.

Yesterday, a female believer came to make an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. During the meeting, she said when the first she read the book “Happiness and Suffering” written by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she felt she could understand it. When the second time she read, however, she could not make sense of it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained that it was because she read the first time with a sense of curiosity and wanted to know what it has delivered. When the second time she read the book, however, she was full of desires. She was searching for what she wanted to read. The book written by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is all about Buddha Dharma. It is not a fiction. Nor is it relevant to our life experiences. Thus, she couldn’t find the answers she desired. That book certainly didn’t make any sense to her.

The inner world of every individual is full of filthy stuff. Our minds are entangled with desires of greediness, anger, and ignorance. Such entangled minds would result in various mental knots. Those knots can only be loosened by listening to Buddha Dharma, examining our deeds, and carefully pondering upon our understanding of Buddha Dharma. For those who listening to Buddha Dharma, it is extremely critical to remain “undefiled minds and thoughts.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to explain that the Buddha Dharma one’s guru teaches is extremely auspicious and immaculate. It is as if the guru tries to pour clean water into an empty bottle. If the bottle, however, is full of junks, the amount of water that can be poured in will be fairly limited. If the bottle is filthy with grease and dirt, the clean water poured in will be contaminated, too. With the clean water in the bottle, the dirt will be floated on the surface of the water. Metaphorically speaking, the dirt represents your greediness, anger, and ignorance. The dharma water that has incessantly poured in can eventually overflow the floating dirt out of the bottle. That’s why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has asked you to attend to pujas uninterruptedly. If one wishes to contain pure water in the bottle, he or she has to dump the junks inside. To achieve realization depends on listening to and understanding Buddha Dharma. And then you will come to a genuine grasp of the meaning of Buddha Dharma taught by various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. You’ll then know the greatness of Buddha Dharma so as to make up you mind to diligently cultivate and practice Buddha Dharma. You’ll strive to walk on the bright path rather than on the dark one that will lead to reincarnation. Consequently, you will be able to break off the cycle of birth and death. And you will be able to help sentient beings to break off the cycle and achieve Buddhahood. Therefore, it is important to have “undefiled minds and thoughts” in order to listen to, understand, realize, and practice the teachings of Buddha Dharma.

At the beginning of each regular puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would ask attendees to recite “The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas.” It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants to remind us that as Buddhists we should not indulge ourselves in our thoughts as ordinary people do. We should learn self-control and follow the standards set up for our body, speech and mind, which are described in the “The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas.” We should strive not to violate the standards. Even if you are still a child, as long as you are a Buddhist, you should abide by the standards. If you violate one, you are not a Buddhist. If you can’t achieve all today, you should try harder tomorrow till you can follow all the standards. Being a Buddhist isn’t to ask you to behave differently on the outside. Nor is it to ask you to yell or claim that you are a Buddhist. Rather, it is to ask you that your inner world should be different from that of non-Buddhists. Even so, you still live your daily lives the same as usual. In your mind, you are crystal clear that you should exercise control of your thoughts. Don’t let them develop freely and don’t indulge yourselves in your desires.

Take the family who just shared their stories as an example. They came to the center only for beseeching blessings. It took them 26 months to realize they were wrong and should make repentance. Some may say that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche should receive their offering earlier so that they could accumulate merits and the serious car accident wouldn’t happen. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the following enlightenment. The way Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saves and liberates sentient beings is in accordance with their causes and conditions. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will definitely help but with various methods. Patiently, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has waited for 26 months till the terrible accident occurred to their son who was hospitalized. Then, they came to a genuine realization of how much suffering sentient beings have been through. Why is it the son who came across the car accident? If the pain occurred to the couple, they probably wouldn’t mind at all. But it is different when the injured is their son. As parents, the pain they felt was heartbreaking. They suddenly were aware of their mistakes. For the son, his painful experience in the ICU has taught him what real suffering is. Actually, the pain in the ICU is only a piece of cake. A long while ago when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wasn’t as busy as he is, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche almost visited the ICU in hospitals on the daily basis to give blessings to those patients who suffered most.

Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked a surgeon disciple to report how patients in the ICU are taken care of. The disciple said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s description of the condition about simultaneous triple-intubation in the ICU is the basic situation. In fact, nurses are very good at taking care of patients. The moment patients are sent to the ward, there will be three to four nurses to strip and shave the patients till the bodies, both back and front, are completely clean. Then nurses will install all the tubes needed. Generally, there will be nasal and nasogastric tubes and catheters. Additionally, for measuring blood pressure and other symptoms every five minute, nurses will punch some holes on patients’ arteries. This procedure is extremely painful. For some patients with abdominal and lung problems, it is necessary to punch some holes to help relieve their symptoms. For others, sometimes for the convenience of injection, it is necessary to place tubes in the neck or crotch. There can be more than ten tubes at most. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the following enlightenment. Isn’t the description of the conditions of patients in the ICU like those of scientific monsters in the movies? Hearing the description is already frightened enough. The more advanced the science and the more we know, the more painful it will be. If you or your elderly families don’t want to suffer like the description in the ICU, you should diligently learn Buddhism. Some of you claim that you have strong self-esteem. If it is true, you should strive to learn Buddhism. Otherwise, when you get old or sick, you’d be stripped by those nurses and given a thin cloth to cover up. You’d be studied and examined by a group of twenty- or thirty-something interns led by a physician. They’d see you naked without any self-respect. If you don’t want to be treated like that, you should make painstaking efforts to cultivate and practice Buddhism. If you do so, the chances of being treated like that without any dignity will be greatly reduced. This is a conduct of a person with true and strong self-esteem. Your illness, being in car accidents and intubations are the manifestations of your karmic retributions.

Master Milarepa once said that as long as you were not liberated from reincarnation in one lifetime, you’ll be entering hells in a future lifetime. Don’t think that you’d enter hells after death. Actually, when there are a lot of tubes inserted in your body as you are alive, it is like in one hell in which you’d be continually punched by needles. You have to learn and practice Buddhism and therefore accumulate merits so as not to suffer such hell-like tortures prior to your passing away. Nor should you say that you won’t know what it likes after passing because you can’t see it. Even if you are not really entering hells before you die, the life you experience prior to your death is like that of hells. Even if you have taken refuge and recited sutras or even if you have ordained, without cultivating and accumulating merits, you can’t change your karma. You shouldn’t think that as long as you have learned Buddhism, you will not suffer. Before the time you die, the physical and mental suffering will make the calmness of your mind disappear. Because of too much pain you are through, you can’t even keep reciting mantras. Sometimes, you have already signed off certain medical treatments. But your family still persuades you by saying “Father, please be cooperative.” Your family loves you too much. They are indeed your karmic creditors. It is not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is against modern medical systems. It is to show you that if you don’t strive to cultivate and practice Buddhism when you alive, you’ll be regretful when the moment comes. Whether you have accumulated sufficient merits can be tested at the moment you die. The reason we strive to learn Buddhism is for the moment we die.

You ought to clearly appreciate that cultivating Buddhism is surely helpful for you. Merely through cultivating Buddhist cultivation can we keep going in the future of a bright side; otherwise, we would fall into the dark suffering of cyclic existence. Cultivating Buddhism is not learning to be a good person or doing good things, which is just the basic foundation of being a human rather than having something to do with Buddhist cultivation. Buddha dharma is just a term which worldly people name it. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang has ever enlightened that a method helpful to sentient beings is just Buddha Dharma.  According to Buddhist Sutra, Buddha dharma is neither fixed nor permanent. Buddha Dharma is not, as you may think, always the methods for treat your illness. Curing the sickness is actually just a piece of cake, and even non-Buddhist path would be able to make it. However, only Buddha Dharma can help you to resolve the suffering of being reincarnated.

One’s motive for cultivating Buddhism must be proper in the very beginning. Only with correct motive can one have the good result. No matter how one had practiced or to whatever extent one had reached in his previous lives, he still ought to learn and practice Buddhism from the very beginning. Buddhism is cultivated by one’s own account. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever seen a reincarnated Rinpoche, who is confirmed having indeed attained Rinpoche in his previous life, does not cultivate Buddhism in the current life, or his practices cannot help him much. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also saw a reincarnated Rinpoche could not even sit with folded legs. Maybe his mental initiation is not proper. On the contrary, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also saw one who is not a reincarnated Rinpoche but attains achievement in this life. The different kinds of outcome all result from their determination of cultivating Buddhism. Today Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed you the enlightenment on the motive to attend puja. After one’s motive is correct, one can plant the seed of orthodox dharma in the field of one’s eighth consciousness. One may not have the opportunity to attain the Buddhahood in this life, but he will definitely continue to learn Buddhist teachings in the future. He will have chance to cultivate Buddha Dharma, gain liberation from the cycle of birth and death, and benefit him and others. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tries every way to let you to much listen to Buddha Dharma. Guru also constantly creates conditions for you, such as inviting His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to Taiwan so as you can have the opportunity to see His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was going to Japan last week, there was a follower of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s, who usually picks Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche up and sees Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche off at the airport, suddenly implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help his follower’s husband who just passed away in Japan. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, nevertheless, declined the follower’s request. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the follower that his sister herself should seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At the moment, the follower felt a little bit unhappy, thinking that his sister was so busy at that time, and he sees Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche off every time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche goes abroad, and also picks Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche off every time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche returns Taiwan. He did not understand why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would refuse his imploring this time. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very scrupulous. Even when a hair of yours moves, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would know what you are thinking about. Before, the follower’s younger sister once said to him, after he took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and started to cultivate Buddhism, that he could just believe it but not be so superstitious. When his sister said so, he did not answer back, which showed that he tacitly agreed. He merely said he could be careful! This also illustrated that he did not have reverence to the Three Jewels. He might think that his sister cared about him and worried that he might be cheated, which just showed that he did not believe nor did he praise guru’s quality. What do they mean “so superstitious”? Each of you at present has your own house. But does anyone sell his house in order to make offerings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? Don’t learn others who say that as long as Buddha is in their mind it is ok to eat meat and drink alcohol.

At the scene, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche manifested supernatural power by telling the follower that his younger sister’s husband missed one of his daughters very much as he was so close with the daughter. After the follower told his sister’s family members, they started to believe and then hurriedly came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche yesterday. You are just like them. Before manifesting supernatural power to you, you just don’t believe it. You all know Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is of great ability, but you don’t know how great ability Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche possesses. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told them many things about the follower’s sister’s husband, told them some things that had been merely known by the family members, and told them where his sister’s husband spirit was, they started to be convinced and believe Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. If, on the contrary, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche consented to the follower at the first time when he prayed on behalf of his sister, then all of his sister’s family members would not believe Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nor would they have the chance to know the greatness of Buddha Dharma. Hence, you can say that, a person who helps others should have both ability and wisdom. This is just the manifestation of benefiting others.

After one realizes Buddha’s teachings, one must truly practice them on his own account. According to the beginning verse of Buddhist sutra, “penetrating journey into the Buddhist sutras” means one is able to realize the Buddha dharma enlightened by Buddha, the enlightened 84,000 dharma method, as well as what the final meaning of the Buddha’s enlightenment is. It does not mean that you need to read all Buddhist sutras. Although in Buddhist sutra, it describes about the 53 visits of Sudhana. In fact, every practice means revealed during the visits is Tantric Dharma. Sudhana has obtained enlightenment and then he, following his guru’s teachings, learns the practice methods of each of the Tantric practitioners. Even an ordained person who wants to listen and learn more dharma, this kind of thought is also greedy. Under an authentic guru’s teachings, one merely needs to deeply focus on one method. Even reciting Amitabha Buddha’s name could help one obtain liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then enlightened: generally speaking, said Master Gampopa, as to the dharma-listener, one should have two aspects of the ”completion of aspiration” and “completion of practice.” There are four types of thinking in ”completion of aspiration”:
(1) We should consider: I do not come to listen to the dharma because of making my fame spread. I come to listen to the Buddha dharma because of saving others to liberate from the widely bitter ocean of the cycle of reincarnation.
(2) We should consider: I do not come to listen to the dharma because of making myself have benefit or reverence. I come to listen to the Buddha dharma for realizing “wisdom of omniscience
.”
(3) We should consider: I do not come to listen to the dharma because of making me win in the debate. But I come to listen to the Buddha dharma in order to conquer the affliction enemy and be able to return triumphantly from “the battlefield where combating with affliction enemy.”
(4) We should consider: I do not come to listen to the dharma because of deliberately disclosing the dharma-teacher’s faults, which exist during enlightening dharma. I come to listen to the Buddha dharma because of paying reverence to dharma teacher and dharma teachings.

The first thinking we should have: I do not come to listen to the dharma because of fame. It should be considered that I come to listen to the Buddha dharma in order to help beings liberate from the cycle of reincarnation.

Many people said they would help and liberate beings while learning Buddhism. It is fine to have such mind. But one should not listen to the dharma because of greed intention as well as fame and wealth. There also some people learning Buddhism and regarding themselves could be the guru in the future. That is also a kind of desire. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again enlightened with his own experience. In the past, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was just a believer or disciple, he had never thought that one day he would be the guru and speech the Buddha dharma. He just knew that learning Buddhism is a good thing. Namely, learning Buddhism with pure heart. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinchen can get effect during listening dharma. It is just like Master Gampopa’s enlightenment. What Buddha dharma says is a critical point, instead of profound ideas, once your heart can attain. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never read the paragraph which Master Gampopa enlightened. Now he reads and just knows he has attained that earlier.

Master Gampopa enlightened that the second thinking we should consider: I do not come to listen to the dharma because of making myself have wealth or reverence. I come to listen to the Buddha dharma for realizing “wisdom of omniscience.”

The wisdom here is different from the cleverness you regard. The cleverness taught from our childhood is to benefit ourselves. In order to understand wisdom, you need to read the Maha-prajna-paramita-sutra from beginning to the end and then you could just understand the wisdom which Buddha said, as well as enter the subtle and profound Buddha meaning which Buddha said. But it is not that one reads sutras by oneself and guess the meaning. Instead, it needs a experienced guru who enlightened the dharma methods of practicing. So-called wisdom is the Five Wisdoms. The wisdom, which Buddha said, is to realize the context of everything in the empty, to fully understand every sufferings which beings have, and to completely handle all dharma methods which help beings liberate from sufferings. Not until one practices to have the Five Wisdoms could one attain Buddhahood and truly benefit every sentient beings.

Buddha dharma is not applied to criticize others but to reflex oneself and correct own body, verbal and intention. Like the younger sister of that disciple, whom were mentioned just now, thought religion is superstitious. She thought she had high scholarship so casually criticizing and then denigrating Buddha. People easily commit verbal karma and hence should notice the mouth. His sister should not be blamed since the ecology is as such. Learning Buddhism is for the purpose of seeking blessings. So it easily lets people think that religion is to accumulate wealth. They are afraid of being deceived. Human beings are not easily deceived as such. Human beings are difficult to be deceived. Whatever they are deceived, they cannot be deceived to learn Buddhism. It is depicted in Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows that beings in the earth are stubborn and obstinate, difficult to tame, and difficult to subdue. In fact, Buddha dharma is not superstitious at all. So much modern science could prove that the content which Buddha enlightened in the past all exists. Science even cannot prove some content in the Buddha dharma. Frankly speaking, believing in science is a kind of superstition instead. Because of just believing in science, that is nothing different with superstition.

It is quite often that some people pray to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for “Pray that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could give me wisdom or have my wisdom unveiled.” In fact, wisdom cannot be given. Everyone is born to have the same wisdom with Buddhas. All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as the guru, could only teach you how to make your heart recover to purity. It just could unveil the wisdom you originally have. If you learn Buddhism with the pure attitude, instead of practicing for your own benefit, you would not be more proud as learning more as well as regard yourself learn very well. It is depicted in Shurangama Sutra that one that any meditation illness which one may have would not occur while practicing meditation.

The third thinking, which is enlightened by Master Gampopa, we should consider is: I do not come to listen to the dharma because of  winning in the debate. Buddha dharma is not the utility for you to debate. Although there are some places holding activities of sutra-debating. It is not practice if you just apply your living experience to explain Buddha dharma or find some sentences in the Buddha sutras to discuss the meaning of terminology. Likely, there are debate associations in schools. Two sides hold respective opinions to debate. There is no result finally. Some people think that it could make themselves smart by reading more Buddha sutras. It may make you have better memory in the next life and respond more rapidly. But you cannot get realized and enlightened.

Learning Buddha is not for you to compare whether the guru’s fame is much or not.  Many people like to say: “I have taken refuge under His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. I am His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s disciple.” It seems to show that what they learn exceeds others. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recalls that one year His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang held a puja in Taiwan. Many people asked to take refuge under His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang smartly said: Fine. There are many refuge certificates outside and you take those to write on your own. Because His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang knew the attitude of seeking refuge is just for blessings. So it is just make karmic connection. Whether it is Buddha dharma of Tibetan Buddhism or exoteric Buddhism, there is no classification of correct or wrong as well as high or low. It is because the steps of enlightening dharma and practicing are different. Many years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche brought the disciples to participate the puja conducted by Dalai Lama. The disciples found the enlightenment is the same is what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened in the before after listening to Dalai Lama’s enlightenment. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that of course it is because there is only one kind of Buddha dharma. Also if the content is too difficult, the listener cannot understand while the capacity is not enough.

So Master Gampopa enlightened to us that learning Buddhism is to defeat affliction enemy and the n we hear the Buddha dharma. The affliction here practically refers to Ego-clinging. People, who are too smart, fills too much own thinking in the heart. Just like the bottle full of water, it is impossible for them to listen in anymore. So they cannot learn Buddhism. As a result, why does it say to empty the heart. Emptying the heart here does not refer to be guilty due to orally cheating. Instead, it refers to make room in the heart, then the authentic dharma could be installed in.

Once human beings breath in and out, there is the intention. While the intention arouses, the affliction would follow it to arouse. You would find that your affliction would gradually reduce while participating pujas in the long-term and heartfully learn Buddhism and listen to Buddha dharma. As to the things which caused you to be afflicted originally, you will gradually find it is nothing. Even if having cancer, you would gradually feel that things are not so serious and affliction is not needed. But you should listen heartfully and listen to the Buddha dharma without greed intention, you could just gradually open the heart which is tangled by the Five Poisons – greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance and suspect.

When you started to learn Buddhism, the guru can satisfy your little desire. It is so-called hooking by desires. If you wish to recover more quickly from illness, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can bestowed blessings in order to make you not to be so painful. If you wish you children be filial, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also has the dharma methods to make your children be more filial. Some may say: my health becomes better or not so uncomfortable after attending the puja. It is possible like that. When you started to learn Buddhism and attend puja, you karmic creditors would temporarily stop hindering you and make you have time to learn Buddha dharma in order to benefit them. Lord Jigten Sumgon had ever said that when beings recover from their illness, they easily start to get lazy. Then the illness would come again. It is not Buddhas, Bodhisattvas or the guru to punish you. But it is your karmic creditors who do not let you go. When it happens, it is invalid for coming to request the guru. IT is not because the guru has no ability, but it is because your heart changes.

When the motivation for listening dharma is correct, the merits can naturally be accumulated. Only merits can turn the karma and conquer the affliction enemy. When affliction is gone, the hindrance of learning Buddhism naturally reduces. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took his illness of spine scoliosis as example to enlighten: while facing the physical illness, initially the sever spine scoliosis had made Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche feel too painful to walk. Now it impacts nothing at all. That is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been able to conquer, even defeat, the affliction enemy.

In addition, when facing skin cancer, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not think like ordinary people who thought they had to accept cancer cells or live peacefully with cancer cells together. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just did not think about the skin cancer at all and let the illness come and go depending on its conditions since everything is under the law of cause and effect. Nowadays many people like to say, “Let me coexist with the cancer cells.” That means that they want to turn themselves into cancer cells. When the cancer cells leave you, your good cells will be gone naturally since all of the cells is an organic whole at the beginning and are divided from one single cell. Therefore, doing chemotherapy or radiotherapy will, in fact, kill both good and bad cells together. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the attendees that during the course of long-term cultivation practice of Buddhism he knew that the skin cancer was the advent of karmic retribution from the evil karma he had done in past generations of lives. Because of this realization, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was able to overcome this kind of worries and be still alive for more than ten years. At least, Rinpoche’s quality of life during these ten plus years has been very good; he could go to anywhere he wanted to go and did not have to stay in a hospital to suffer surgeries, chemotherapies, or any cutting. Whether the skin cancer would recur or not in the future could be taken care of later. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not like most people who remembered the illness the doctor told them every day and generated constant worries. If you wish your cancer can be cured after attending pujas, this is also your desire. The greatness of Buddhism is in the principle that you have to actually hear it and do it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the attendees that if you practice the supramundane dharmas well, your worldly matters will have no problems. However, you have often done exactly the opposite approach; thus, your will not be able to solve your problems. This is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s actual personal experience of cultivation practices; you have to believe it and practice it diligently. The fact that you cannot achieve it now does not mean that you cannot achieve it in the future. Many people are just not patient and want their illnesses to be cured immediately.

The fourth kind of thought that we should think of, enlightened by Gampopa Master, is, “I do not come to listen to Buddha dharma for the purpose of deliberately exposing a Buddhist master’s faults (possibly existing in his dharma lectures). I come to listen to Buddha dharma for the purpose of respecting the Buddhist master and the teachings.”

Some people have the mentality that they, having learned some Exoteric Buddhism, just come to see and compare how and what a guru teach. If the guru teaches something which does not exist in Exoteric Buddhism, they will take it and mix it together with their knowledge, showing that they are different from others and have learned more than others. Basically, all of dharmas from life experience are dualistic. The mentality of using one’s own knowledge and experience to criticize others is totally unacceptable. There are also some people who go to see where a guru teaches wrong and then tell the guru’s believers or disciples that the guru has taught wrong. This kind of action is also not right.

Whether the person is a guru or a Khenpo, as long as he teaches Buddha dharma on the Dharma throne, he will not speak randomly, because they all believe deeply in the law of cause and effect. There was a story that because a Buddhist master had spoken a word wrong, he was reborn as a fox for 500 lives. Buddhist teaching is very serious and cannot be spoken in a joking manner. Perhaps the method taught by this guru is not what you can understand; this is your problem and does not mean he is wrong; sometimes, it is the guru’s oversight, because there are too many terminologies in Buddhist scriptures. For example, sometimes, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not remember very clearly some terminologies in Buddhism, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not a practitioner focusing on reading Buddhist scriptures, but a practitioner focusing on true cultivation practices. Even for a practitioner whohas been focusing on reading Buddhist scriptures and can remember very clearly many terminologies in Buddhist scriptures, he may still be negligent in some places. Therefore, it is fine for you to just see if a practitioner speaks Buddha dharma according to the framework and the scope taught by the guru and the lineage holder from past generations. You are not the guru; how could you know what kind of level the guru has reached? Especially, you should not garble a guru’s teachings when listening to Buddha dharma. What a guru has done cannot be known clearly by you in one day, two days, one year, or two years. You should carefully see what methods are always used by a guru to do things and how a guru promotes Buddhism. If you have the mindset of listening to Buddha dharma for the purpose of finding a guru’s faults, you should simply not come. This is not a place of teaching martial arts, so there is no need for you to come here to challenge and prove your superiority.

The Drikung Kagyu lineage founder, Jigten Sumgon had said that he would not speak and did not dare to speak what Buddhist scriptures had not mentioned and what had not been taught in the heritage. This is the so-called following the dharma, not following a person, and following a fully explained teaching, not following any teaching that is not fully explained. How to determine whether a Buddhist teacher follows Buddha dharma or a person? If you often hear him saying, “I know…, I feel…” Then he just follows a person. If he often says, “Sakyamuni Buddha had said…”, or mentions that Gampopa master, Venerable Milarepa, or His Holiness had once said, and so on, then he just follows Buddha dharma. If one follows a person, it may be very easy for one to fall into one’s own subjective consciousness. Therefore, you have to watch that when a guru teaches Buddhism whether he often says that this is a quote from a Buddhist scripture or this is taught by a guru. If he often says so, you can believe in him. If someone often says that he can feel something, or Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have told him something in his dreams, this person just cannot be believed. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has often said that Buddhist scriptures had said this or His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had said this. Some people may say, “Is this to shrink your responsibility and shift the responsibility to others?” This is not so. The purpose of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaching in such manner is to let all of you understand that by following and truly practicing the dharmas taught by the gurus from past generations Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has actually achieved accomplishments; as long as you are biddable  as well as willing to practice, you can achieve accomplishments as well.

Today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the attendees the motive of practicing Buddhism and generating Bodhicitta based on Rinpoche’s own experience of cultivation practices and enlightenments. This motive is very important; it is just the “preliminary” portion in the dharma text. It is very important to have the correct way of generating Bodhicitta. When practicing any dharma, it must include the preliminary, the main practice, and the dedication. If the preliminary is done well, the main practice and the dedication can then have their effects. When you have the correct motive for the preliminary, merit can then be generated and the main practice can then have its effect. When we make dedication, only dedication of merit can truly help all sentient beings. Otherwise, we will be the same as a machine which repeatedly recites the Buddha’s name, generating no effect. If you do not have the correct motive for the preliminary, no matter how well the main practice is conducted and how many mantras you have recited, there is no merit for you to make dedications and you will not have the power to really help sentient beings either. At most, the dharma practice only helps you to accumulate some worldly and heavenly blessings.

If your motive of practicing Buddhism and generating Bodhicitta is undefiled and correct, all of what you have practiced will generate merit, which can be used in this life right away. If you cannot attain merit, you cannot turn and change your karma accumulated in your previous lives and you will finish this life by following the karma. If you use a mind of desire to listen to Buddha dharma, you can only accumulate worldly and heavenly blessings which cannot be used in this life and can only be used in future lives. Previously, Emperor Liang had asked Bodhidharma, “I have done so many things for Buddhism. Do I have a large amount of merit?” Bodhidharma replied, “You do not have merit, only blessings.” Why did Bodhidharma say so? It was because Emperor Liang had used a mind of desire to do the matters he thought that could accumulate merit. Hence, he only accumulated blessings, not merit. Emperor Liang was eventually starved to death, having no ability to turn and change his karma.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart is vastly different with yours. When taking refuge in exoteric Buddhism or even under  His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always applied the pure heart, without desires, to take refuge. Why can Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche know the deceased’s mind? Because the heart of the guru, as well as of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, are immovable. But your heart moves back and forth. Because the guru’s heart is immovable, so the change of your heart can be known. When you unceasingly come and go, you head to the cycle of incarnation. Previously Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a disciple, who is ordained now. She just does not clearly figure out the motivation of arousing heart for learning Buddhism. Even she had taken retreats for several times, she still cannot take the effect. Up to now, she has so many problems but cannot solve. It says that learning Buddhism should be with 30 percent foolish. The content enlightened today is very simple but everyone’s mind is just too complicated. The content enlightened today was told several times in the before. But did you achieve that? If you have not achieved, it equals to ineffectiveness. After returning, you should well think the content which the guru enlightened today. It’s very important.

Many people came to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after receiving Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche expressed that it is needless to thank. While you come to thank, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart is immovable. But if you are willing to learn Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart would just move a bit and would feel that you can seemingly understand the Buddha dharma which would do help to you. But everyone seemingly does not think that it is important. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often enlightened that truly grateful and filial people are those who learn Buddhism. Upon that, then your elders just could receive assistance. “Assistance” here refers that it helps your elders not to have so much medical sufferings before passing away.

A believer who lives in the U.S. wrote a mail to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and said that if making the believer become better for the cancer, the believer can help more beings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that it is to threaten and exchange conditions with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. To request Buddha, one should not apply the mindset of exchanging conditions. As a human being, one ought to help beings. Illness is just the showing of own karma. By exchanging conditions to do request to Buddha, it is threatening and one cannot successfully request Buddha. When many believers came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche due to illness, they would say that they still cannot die because the children are not grown-up or married. That is to threaten Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

What the guru said, you must obey. If you do not obey, it cannot tell what will be in the future but the result must be not optimistic. You should not say that a child would disobey parents once. Learning Buddhism is a very strict and serious thing and cannot be looked down. You should not say that “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cherishes me.“ His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang cherishes Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche so much that letting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche laboriously take retreat for 3 months.

A disciple reported that he listened to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment today. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche repeatedly teaches us, who initially arouse to learn Buddha dharma, about the ought-to-be and the most basic mindset. In the before the disciple took more than 10 years learning in exoteric Buddhism. Although the guru in exoteric Buddhism also taught the importance of arousing Bodhicitta. However, as to the correct mindset which one should have for listening dharma, the disciple had never heard from anyone who can spend so much time enlightening so detail like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did. But they just learned and memorized every sutra, dharma method of pure land, even Tianti school and so on. After listening to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche repeatedly teaches us with his own practicing experience. Like people who learn martial art, whatever fighting style you learn, horse stance is the most important foundation. As to today’s enlightened, it is the most important point for learning Buddhism. He thanked so much.

Another disciple, who had ever been ordained in the other lineage, reported: when the disciple learned every dharma methods in the other lineage in the before, the guru always enlightened the importance of arousing heart, as well as the Bodhicitta. After listening so much, sometime he would feel tired in his heart and regarded that it was always the same thing. It seemed to be something must-to-do. But today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught us with own practicing experience, process and mindset. The disciple felt very differently. We do not know what actually the pure heart is. Furthermore, sometimes we did not clearly know own afflictions. In fact, like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s saying, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart is very subtle. If your heart moves a bit, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche all knows. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not only teach us with dharma clothes on the throne, but while Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not with dharma clothes on the throne, every sentence is also the dharma words, always benefits being, always teaches us to clearly figure out our afflictions. Sometimes, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche points out one of his problem, he spent very long time, which sometimes 1 or even 2 days, and just could clearly see the profound affliction in his heart. As a result, one should take all his spirit to remember every sentence said by the guru because all of these help everyone. Everyone must cherish the opportunity to listen to a guru who has realization to enlighten Buddha dharma. The disciple ever reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the guru with the most immense compassion among all gurus the disciple have ever seen. Because as to such level of great practitioner of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as well as the level of practicing and realization of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can teach the practitioners who are truly willing to devote all their lives to take life-and-death retreat. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is willing to directly face these beings at the frontier to enlighten Buddha dharma. The power of compassion is extremely immense. The disciple had never seen or heard how immense the power of vows is. The disciple is very grateful for being able to hear Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment.

Another disciple reported: after listening to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment, the disciple repented so much. After taking refuge for so many years, sometimes that disciple feels to encounter a bottleneck about practicing, even to retrograde. That is because the disciple has not adjusted own mindset well. For many times, the disciple had more opportunities than others to help another people but the disciple did not do it well. The disciple thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment and unceasingly teaching. The disciple would arouse vows to follow the guru to practice diligently. The disciple also believes that the life and death must be liberated if doing according to the guru’s teaching.

Thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately taught the disciples who newly took refuge how to make prostration. The prostration style in Tibetan Buddhism is to fold two palms with putting two wrists together. It means the closing of the gate for the cycle in the Six Realms. And two palms are like to hold flowers and jewels to offer the guru as well as Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. So it is hollow between two palms which are not touching together. While making prostration, it needs not to turn over the palms. While entering the exoteric Buddhism temples, generally people would firstly prostrate to Buddha statues in the main hall and then to the master. But it is different in the Tibetan Buddhism. One should prostrate to the guru firstly and then prostrate to the Buddha statue. You must prostrate while you see the guru. While leaving, prostration is not needed, unless you would never see the guru anymore and prostration is needed while leaving.

Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche orally transmitted the ritual of Dharma Protector Achi and enlightened that Dharma Protector Achi is the Drikung Kagyu’s uncommon dharma protector. So-call uncommon dharma protector is to practice uncommonly while Mahākāla, for example, is practiced in four major lineages and is the common dharma protector. Dharma protector Achi is Lord Jigten Sumgon’s grandmother. She attained Buddhahood in this life and reborn to her pure land with the rainbow body, which means that her body became the rainbow ray and nothing was left. She is also the Nirmanakaya of Vajrayogini. Dharma protector Achi had ever said that once one is the disciple in Drikung Kagyu Lineage, dharma protector Achi would always protect and support that one. If you have a long trip, you can report to dharma protector Achi and dharma protector Achi would protect you. While performing the ritual of dharma protector Achi, the practitioner should take a cup of red tea as offerings. In the before, dharma protector Achi drunk Pu-erh tea. After conducting the ritual, this cup of tea can be poured into the lawn or sewer to make karmic connection with beings. You don’t have to drink it.

Next Friday the Chod puja will be hold. Next Sunday is a very special day because it is the birthday of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche prayed for the grant of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and will lead the disciples in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to conduct the puja of Buddha Amitayus. In the puja of Buddha Amitayus, all merits of dharma-practicing and mantras-reciting would be made offerings to His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. The attended everyone thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

After the puja was over, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceed to meet 41 believers and helped them solve worldly problems as well as gave enlightenment to believers with Buddhism.
