Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

July 17, 2011

The auspicious regular puja was hold at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei. Believers and disciples listened reverently to the audio recording of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings on September 21, 2003.

Before the puja, a male disciple accompanying with his wife and children, who all are Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples, shared the process of his family members were helped by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

They took refuge under His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on July 18, 2010. It was almost one year since that time, their family members all had the blessing, teaching, and enlightenment bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he and his wife deeply realized that their attitudes for learning Buddhism were incorrect before taking refuge. Every of their thoughts were selfish and egoistic, the purpose of worship Buddha was long for their benefit, as long as their wishes was to take what they wanted from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in order to have a good life. They were not aware that they were on the wrong path which was not learning Buddhism, it should be non-Buddhist path. They were helpless and unable to do anything when the karmic power was appearing.

Last January, there was one day after work, her wife just recovered from a serious flu, she hurried to high–speed railway station and would like go to Hsin-Chu taking their children back. She suddenly felt dizzy in front of the MRT of Shilin Station, just like a strong power would push her over on the road. A policeman rode a motorcycle just waiting the traffic light beside her; he immediately took her to a hospital for emergency care. This disciple, upon receiving the phone call which was calling by his wife’s colleague, hurried on the way from Hsin-Chu to Taipei in order to take care of her. But he was helpless even if he had been standing by her. Afterward through a series of examination and taking a lot of time, they were still unable to find the cause. The doctor only advised her to slow down her steps, and reduce the stress, at the meantime, she had to take lots of medicine and go back hospital when consuming all the medicine. Besides she was advised not to drive the car as well. After that, the same situation was happened for several times, during that time, he and his wife was out of control for their work and life, they almost quit their jobs. It was because that his office was at Hsin-Chu, he was very busy and sometime he had to go abroad for business trip. There was no other relative beside her wife, once her wife was sick; he was unable to look after both sides between family and work.

At that time, a disciple took them to seek an audience with the venerable Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When his wife came to the venerable Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he was on a business trip to another country. Therefore, their daughter went with her. When his wife explained the purpose of her visit, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately asked her, “Why on earth do you learn Buddhism?” His wife was stupefied and speechless. After she went home, she thought to herself, “Indeed, why am I on a vegetarian diet and do prostrations to the Buddhas?” What’s more, he was grateful for the compassionate advice bestowed by the venerable Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche: His wife’s second postpartum period was not conducted well. Her uterus had problems, for she once had a miscarriage. Additionally, she was kindly told to see a Chinese medicine doctor to preserve her health. After that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche looked at their daughter benevolently, asking if she had any questions. The girl said she didn’t have any as she was merely accompanying her mother. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche smiled to their daughter and said, “You have been using the carving tool inappropriately.” Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche showed her a gesture and taught their daughter how to handle the carving tool. As it turned out that their daughter was making a wooden box for her art class at school. She was quite troubled as the wood was not difficult to cut. Her parents had no idea about her issue, but the venerable guru knew it all at one glance.

Later on, he took his whole family to seek an audience with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked what his job was, and he answered that it was about communication. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately advised him to stay in the same company until his retirement, not to have a different job, not to become other people’s business partner, and not to accept any offer from other companies. As a matter of fact, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already foreseen the future. In the meantime, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told them not to have quarrels because their family and children would be affected. Furthermore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told him that his wife’s health was poor as she failed to complete her second postpartum period properly. Therefore, she should see a Chinese doctor to preserve her health.

In addition, last year their family had booked the trip to Cao-Xi temple in Yunnan on 5th, August before taking refuge. The disciple really aspired to participate but just worried that his son could not endure air pressure at high altitudes due to the congenital heart disease. He repented that they, who had not taken refuge then, just ignorantly and selfishly asked for the blessings bestowed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It not only wasted the guru’s precious time, but consumers the guru’s energy. Also, it seemed like to seek the guru’s assurance. The mindset was totally incorrect. But His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then just compassionately bestowed his son the thread of vajra knot and reminded that his son must keep it without taking off, as well as closely follow the parents in the journey.

He really thanked Most Venerable Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Ripoche for bestowing auspicious blessings to all of their family. The disciple also thanked the group of Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic helps their whole family to nurse the health. Both the health of his wife and son are much better. His health also improves so much. He thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious dharma-teaching, which makes them clearly see the impermanence of life and death, the faults of the cycle of rebirth, as well as repent thing which was not in accordance with the dharma but he did before. Also, making offerings, giving, keeping percepts are needed. They must not covet the comfort. Instead, it needs to act in accordance with teachings, as well as protect and support the lineage, to fulfill the duty of being a refuge disciple.

At last, he again thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as well as all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for their compassionate blessings and saving. He especially thanked the teachings of Buddha dharma by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He repented that he is so ignorant, the bad habits in accumulated lives are too heavy, and often did incorrectly without self-awareness. He prayed for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate influence and teachings. They would be definitely and closely follow His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to learn Buddha dharma and act in accordance with teachings. Also pray that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would always turn the dharma wheel, always inhabit in this world to benefit all sentient beings in the Six Realms.

Afterward, the attendees listened reverently to the audio recording of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings on September 21, 2003: Before that puja, some disciples made repentance because they returned the dharma photo of Dharma Protector of Drikung Kagyu Achi, The dharma photo was bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche two months ago, but they returned it because they thought that it was enough to have one photo for their family members.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceeded to enlighten that: An ordained disciple just gave a note to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the content of the note is that “Please Guru compassionately forgives those faithful disciples to give them the opportunity of learning Buddhism in order to urge and encourage themselves.” They could not be considered as a faithful disciple, if they were a faithful disciple, they would take actions according to the guru’s teaching. It was that the dharma protector let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche discover this matter; it means that dharma protector gave these people the opportunity, furthermore it also means that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching is an authentic Buddha dharma, therefore the dharma protector would let the matter be revealed.

As long as they are relative to Buddha dharma, the affairs of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, the Drikung Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism or it is relative to the affair of learning Buddhism for sentient beings, even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not know it, Dharma Protector of Drikung Kagyu Achi is certain to tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Don’t think that you can conceal something that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche might not know it. But Dharma Protector of Drikung Kagyu Achi must know it. There were hundreds of people concealed this thing, for your point of view, you would think that it is a tiny thing; But if one firmly believes the law of cause and effect, anything will have the karma retribution no matter it is a tiny thing or not. If you would like to conceal something, someone would conceal you as well; if you would like to cheat someone, someone would cheat you as well. You dared to cheat your guru, is there anyone else who you would not cheat? It does not mean that you would tell anything exactly as it happened; it is that you should not repay other’s kindness insincerely or go through the motions. You must be aware of that, if your karma is not clear, you would not have the qualification or you would be able to be reborn in the Pure Land by reciting the name of Buddha, not to mention that you would like to learn Zen.

Although the sutra mentioned that we can reborn in Pure Land with our karma, but it is not referring to the evil karma, it must be the good karma. As long as there would be a tiny evil karma, we would not be able to reborn in Pure Land. Even if you could recite the name of Buddha continually, it would be in vain. If we would like to practice Mahamudra or Phowa dharma, we are unable to achieve them if our karma is not clear. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is so strict with his disciples; it is because that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche fully understands that it is impossible to achieve it for this life as long as we continually have the new evil karma. Therefore if you had any behavior which would be against Buddha dharma, the dharma protector would remind you. But you don’t have the qualification to have relatedness with the dharma protector; therefore the dharma protector will be by way of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s warning. Those are the ways of warning by expelling you from this center, or not allow you making offering which would remind you that you are doing the wrong thing. If you were not aware what was wrong with you, and do the wrong things recurrently, your guru is absolutely not to let you be wrong any more. If the guru is unable to change you by this life, you will be ignored by guru for a while.

That was why you could not be considered as a faithful disciple, this case was saw by dharma protector and let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche know, therefore there was no faith anymore. Today, these disciples made repentance in public and speak their regret in public; it was a way of learning, introspection and encouragement. As to this ordained disciple also wrote “Guru, please compassionately forgive those unintelligent disciples and not to redeploy their dharma clothes and jobs”. Since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had mentioned, the redeploying of their dharma clothes and jobs will be definitely executed without change. Today these 10-odd disciples to make repentance which was an opportunity to let them learn and introspect, but they needed to be punished by the worldly law in order to give them attention, as well as your attention. You can also learn from it, it is impermanence for life, no matter it is your job, identification, position, wealth. It would be changed anytime; our life is impermanence as well.
Why did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche demand the old disciples so strict? It was because that you don’t have much time, if your mind is still concerning your reputation, your children, when it is your time, even if you have cause and condition to find Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it would be unsuccessful even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could conduct Phowa dharma for you. It was because of your mind would be obsession and clinging. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would demand those old disciples much strictly; it was because that you don’t have much time after 60 years old. Don’t think that you would be reborn in the Pure Land, if we could not let go for the worldly thing, or we did not train ourselves to have the mind of letting go, you would be clinging before you are dying. Even if your guru had the extraordinary dharma method to let you reborn in the Pure Land, it also needs the cause and condition. What kind of cause and condition is that? You must possess the mind of renunciation, and 100 % of confidence with your guru, and then you will have the insurance to be reborn in the Pure Land in your future life.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has clearly explained to you that your children of this lifetime were born as your creditors. The more you love and care for them, it means the more debt you have owed them. If, in this lifetime, you can’t change or let go of your attachment, you’d return to pay back in next lifetime. Have you elderly here suffered enough? If you don’t feel you have suffered enough, then you should come back next lifetime. You shouldn’t think that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not merciful to those elderly. As a matter of truth, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche care most for young children and elderly people. It’s because young children were born like a piece of clean paper. They have a lot more chances than you to cultivate and practice Buddha Dharma. Additionally, it’s easier for them to absorb Buddha Dharma and they are more flexible to be changed. That’s why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has cared and dearly loved young children. Why does Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also very much care for the elderly? It is because they have little time left. To care them isn’t the same as to spoil them. Nor is it the same as allowing them to do whatever they want. Rather it is to help them so that they can certainly leave the cycle of birth and death in this life. To achieve this aim, there will be no room to compromise in their cultivation and practices of Buddha Dharma. In other words, be merciful to them doesn’t refer to allow them to do anything as they please. Being merciful, for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, is to teach all the dharma methods Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows to you and help you to leave the suffering ocean. The standards for practicing Buddha Dharma are not set up by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but Buddha Sakyamuni. We must strive to achieve the standards. If not, we simply learn Buddhism by lip service without being able to change anything of ours.

Today’s note written by the ordained disciple was out of his kindness. The words are indicative of his hope that all sentient beings can learn Buddhism and break off the cycle of birth and death. It is your accumulated merits that have given rise to the cause and condition for you to learn the great Drikung Kagyu dharma of leaving the cycle of birth and death. Because of the birth confusion, however, we have forgotten all experiences in past lifetime. Additionally, we had inherited many bad habits from previous life and we have also cultivated many bad characters in this life. These bad habits and characters have kept hindering us in learning Buddhism. As a guru, his job is to help you eliminate these obstacles of learning Buddhism.

Thus, as an authentic guru, all his deeds including laughing, smiling, angering, and scolding are all about Buddha Dharma. Yesterday, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolded two disciples for almost half an hour. You must have known that the expression and words of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche weren’t very nice when Rinpoche was scolding people. At that time, a disciple who was also a physician of Chinese medicine was on the site and became worried that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would hurt his health by being so angry. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was done, that physician disciple immediately went to take Rinpoche’s pulse. After taking Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s pulse, he said Rinpoche’s pulse was very calm. What did this phenomenon of calm pulse mean? It indicated that when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reprimanded disciples, Rinpoche was actually very peaceful, which wouldn’t interfere with heart and liver pulses. It was unlike you. Once when a disciple got mad at Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he couldn’t even get into sleep. It was because his anger really got interference with his heart and liver pulses. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did feel sad. But Rinpoche felt sad for what? It is like the enlightenment of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva once dropped two tears when seeing so many sentient beings were still in the suffering ocean. It is because the goal of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is to save and liberate sentient beings. The sadness of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is like that of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Why don’t you know you are in the suffering ocean?

Lotus Sutra has explained that we are like those children who have fond of playing toys in the house but don’t know the house has been on fire. Their father is extremely worried so he thought of a way to lure them out by putting many toys in two cars. This metaphor informs us that this filthy and evil world is like the house on fire. Our lives, on the other hand, are very fragile and in quick danger. The function of Buddha Dharma renders us a convenient way out of the firing house. The true method of Buddha Dharma is actually to travel to the other side of the suffering ocean by these two cars and then bring us to the pure land. To achieve this aim, we have to leave this firing house first. That is we have to leave this filthy and evil world, the home of reincarnation. If we want to obtain this aim, we must change and let go of many habits and thoughts that we know as rightful. Without changing and letting go of those habits and thoughts, many disciples who have converted for two or five years are still having many bad habits, not to mentions those just taking refuge or having not yet! Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and gurus like us have kept benefiting sentient beings. We won’t give up any chance for you to learn Buddha Dharma. But your willingness to do so is also a requirement. Buddha Dharma is not a kind of knowledge for you to learn. Nor is it for you to make sense of something. It is, however, for you to change and abandon your bad habits, characters, and problems. As a result, your original undefiled nature will be manifested. That’s why there are so many dharma methods for us to learn. Individual dharma method isn’t for us to attain some kind of ability or super-natural power. Nor is it to obtain some common sense. Instead, it is to help us to eliminate the karmic influence caused by our evil deeds carried out since the time of beginninglessness. The karmic force of such seeds is very powerful, which can at once alter our hearts to learn Buddha Dharma.

Therefore, as for this event, it sounds many reasons exist, but simply speaking the problems are regarding greed, hatred, delusion, arrogance, and doubt. The five poisons keep affecting us and control us life after lives. And Buddhist cultivation is to learn the methods to counteract the Five Poisons. The reason to ask you to believe in guru is in that the mind of arrogance will naturally lead to doubt. Once you generate doubt, you just have the evil thought. One with evil thought cannot get correspondence with guru, dharma protector, and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. What is “getting correspondence?”It does not mean that you see it, hear it, or dream Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Instead, it refers to that you feel and realize the fact of that you have many faults uncorrected.

Just like what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has said, one of the features of a true Mahamudra practitioner is that he reveres and believes in Guru. Why the one would have this feature? It is because when one starts to learn meditation, Mahamudra in particular, without an authentic and experienced guru’s introducing the heart to him, he would never learn it. Mahamudra is the profound and difficult dharma. Does it need a smart worthy vessel to learn it? The answer is no! Mahamudra is not recorded in sutra and in fact it is a really simple dharma, whereas it is the most auspicious and profound dharma. Why? It is because we, the ordinary, have costumed to live life with our consciousness life after lives. So we don’t know, nor do we realize, that we innately possess the function of true heart. And the heart is just our master. As we don’t know the truth, we need a guru to introduce the heart. Would the guru introduce the heart to let you know? The answer is no. No matter you say you know it or not, it shows you don’t know your mind. Hence, Mahamudra really needs to be introduced and taught by your guru. Without guru’s teaching and guiding you in the part of Mahamudra practice, you will never know or realize it. Never will you get enlightened. Therefore, in the process of Lama Chopa, we would pray for guru’s blessing to let us early attain the state of Mahamudra. Without guru’s blessing, it is not possible for one to attain the state of Mahamudra. Why is the state of Mahamudra so important? As no matter which dharma you practice, without the foundation, help, and state of Mahamudra, you are not able to attain achievement. Any dharma you practice, such as meditation, Tantra, and Pure Land Buddhism, needs Mahamudra.

The auspicious dharma of Mahamudra was uninterruptedly passed on from the place of India to the holder of Drikung Kagyu Lineage, now is His Holiness the 37th Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. Mahamudra must be orally transmitted from a guru. Without transmission, one could not attain it even if he reads the books or listens to the audio recorders regarding Mahamudra. Before one starts to learn it, one has to finish the four extraordinary preliminary practices and then concentration (samatha) and wisdom (vipasyana). Before one starts to practice concentration (samatha) and wisdom (vipasyana), his karma has to be mostly purified. Without karma being purified, one could not attain the concentration (samatha). That is, one could not temporarily cease one’s improper thoughts, which is very difficult for those who have heavy karma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very severe to you for that you could not enter the state before having your karma purified. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cultivated Exoteric Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche practiced meditation. Every day Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sat in meditation. During the period, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche twice experienced that he had not found a guru with whom he was associated.

Once, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sat in meditation at around 11:00 pm at home. His family members all fell asleep. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche entered the state of meditation very soon and his six roots all ceased. His eyes did not see, his ears did not hear, his skin did not feel, and he did not even feel the feeblest breath. All the functions of his six consciousnesses were cut off. At that time he felt very comfortable and liked this state very much. He did not want to come out. Suddenly he heard a silvery woman’s laugh, smiling to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ears. Hearing it, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche emerged from the state of concentration. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche looked at the clock and found it was 3:30 am. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had sat in meditation for four hours. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just felt it was like one minute passed.

The other occurrence happened when a friend took Rinchen Dorjee to a monastery in northern Taiwan where a stone statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara was revered. The statue was not placed in the main temple and was in a separate room. The friend took Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche into the room to see the statue. Then, the rain poured and thunder roared. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sat in meditation in front of the statue. After sitting down for a minute, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche lost track of his friend’s voice, the rain, and even the roaring thunder. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was even not aware of his own breathing and entered the state in an instant. After a while, his friend’s pager beeped and thereby woke up Richen Dorjee Rinpoche. The friend told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that he had been sitting for over an hour. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche felt that only a few seconds had passed.

These two examples of sitting in meditation were not good. Instead, they were very dangerous experiences in terms of sitting in meditation. In the first incident, the woman’s voice that was heard should be the Dharma Protector Achi, in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s opinion. She woke up Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche by surprising him. In the second incident, had it not been the beeping pager, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have failed to come out. When one enters that type of meditative concentration, it can take 3 or 5 years until he come out of it. All the person’s consciousness and mental functions will be fixed upon the so-called state of concentration. Without external help, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have rooted to the spot. If someone who had no idea what was going on had pushed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have spat blood and died. Therefore, that is why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not taught you how to practice meditative concentration since you took refuge. As you have not cleared your karma, it is very dangerous to sit in meditation. If you have great capacities just like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, you can enter the so-called state of concentration, enclosing your mind and consciousness. It will be very dangerous. After those two occurrences, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche readjusted his way of meditative concentration. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s master did not teach Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche how to practice meditative concentration, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche simply recited the sacred name of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and focused his mind on the sacred name of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara while conducting the recitation.

One day, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche uttered two sentences during meditative concentration. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is Cantonese, he should speak Cantonese as usual. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche spoke in standard Beijing dialect that day. Even Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was stunned with himself. Why would those sentences be uttered? A long while thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then knew that one who enters a state of very deep meditative concentration can disclose some of the seeds from their past lifetimes that were stored in their eight consciousness, alaya-vijnana. From Tantric Buddhist perspective, it is to break down the barriers in our channels and disclose our past memories, i.e. knowledge of former existences. Therefore, Yunga Rinpoche once told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in person that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was able to know about a few of his past lifetimes because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has cleared his karma up. Thereby, those two sentences would be uttered.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche consulted many virtuous ones in Taiwan for an explanation of these two sentences. Once, a female Dharma master in Northern Taiwan did not know how to answer, but she instructed her attending disciple to copy these two sentences as she considered the words are nicely said. On another occasion, a monk in Central Taiwan was asked and failed to reply. The third one was a reputed master in Zen Buddhism. He explained to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche with a few statements in the Diamond Sutra, but his explanation sounded false to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Apart from them, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche consulted many people who considered themselves good at sitting in meditation. However, none of them gave an explanation that could bring mental shock for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche met with His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and asked about the meanings of those two sentences. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang said that the sentences are an attainment in Mahamudra. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did his first retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again consulted His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang about the meanings of the two sentences. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang then replied that they were what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had attained in practice in his past lifetimes. However, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not attained realization at the time, those two sentences were very important to him. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang would provide an explanation for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the next day. The next day, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang still told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that they were about an attainment in Mahamudra. Why did His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang have to tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the next day? It was not that His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang did not understand Chinese. Nevertheless, it is difficult for His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to think in Tibetan and then figure out how to put it in Chinese. It is not as easy as it looks. Therefore, it took His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang a night to think of the Chinese explanation for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Judging from that, even His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was so respectable, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang has the so-called attachment to Dharma and a sense of responsibility. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked of such a profound state of meditative concentration, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had to provide a clear explanation for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and could not merely give a casual answer.

Why doesn’t Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tell you these two sentences? In fact, this is not a secret. However, if you remember the statements without attaining the state through practice this life, you may come again. Just like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, his birth in this life is for repaying the necessary debts and these two sentences. To put it simply, if we attach to certain matters this life, they will bring you back. Therefore, you should think over Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching process for you. Why has Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche been teaching on practice means for your thoughts, speech, and conduct? If our body, speech, and mind are not purified, even the most extraordinary practice means, the most accomplished master, or the most honorable His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang will not be able to teach you anything. You have got to learn the Buddhist teachings accordingly with your body, speech, and mind. After they have been purified, you can then make the entrance. What entrance? That is the entrance to Mahamudra. In ancient times, it is said that a learner of Mahamudra should make a great offering. A great offering does not have to be material wealth. What is the most important is one’s reverence towards the Buddhist teachings, the guru, and the lineage. That is a great offering. If you read about the life of Jetsun Milarepa, you will know what Milarepa did when meeting with his guru. If you read about the life of Naropa, you will know how he treated his guru.

At this point, a young male disciple, although kneeling in the puja, still did not pay attention and looked around. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened him, “The fact that you have this kind of behavior means that your body is very healthy. Hence, you should first do fifty push-ups now.” Next to the young male disciple, there was an elder person who, although kneeling as well, was well-behaved and did not move heedlessly. Therefore, this elder disciple could stop kneeling and could make offerings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again. Others who were kneeling could stop kneeling as well.

All participants appreciated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Under the imploration of all people, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately agreed to accept the offerings from those disciples who had knelt, except the one who was doing the push-ups.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then enlightened the attendees. Many people will say that their mind cannot calm down and has many ideas and thoughts. Most of Buddhists in Taiwan will usually teach them to recite sutras and worship Buddhas frequently, or to do meditations or a Seven Day Zen, and so on. Are these methods effective? They have limited effects. Why? It is because the karma of those people has not been eliminated. Before a person’s karma is eliminated, he cannot achieve any effect he wants to accomplish. What is the most excellent part of Tibetan Buddhism? The most excellent part is that Tibetan Buddhism teaches Buddha Dharma taught by Sakyamuni Buddha systematically. Hence, Tibetan Buddhism has the practice method of the four uncommon preliminaries. In this Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, at your first day of taking refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will definitely teach you first the first dharma, repentance. The real meaning of repentance is that it temporarily stops the interference of our karma to our life and gives us time and space to learn Buddhism. It will be very easy for us to make progress, as long as we begin with the dharma of repentance, then practice compassion, Bodhicitta and other methods in sequence, then practice “the Thirty-seven Practices of a Bodhisattva” to strengthen our foundation, and then follow with the practice of the four uncommon preliminaries. If this foundation is not laid properly, and you wish to learn dharmas all day long, without getting rid of your bad behaviors, the higher level you learn the more risk you have.

The power of Tantra is very strong. Those who perform retreats frequently like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as long as they practice diligently, will correspond to any dharma and will immediately see and know the changes of things. In the dharma text of Achi, a dharma protector, there is a phrase, “wishing to accomplish the four undefiled dharmas.” The four undefiled dharmas are namely the four methods of Peace, Power, Increase, and Wrath. What is the meaning of “undefiled”? It means that when we conduct dharmas our mind has to be clean, without the slightest idea of benefiting ourselves. The benefit mentioned here includes fame and gain. If we use Tantra without an undefiled mind, it will be very terrible; we will not only harm ourselves, but also harm sentient beings. According to Esoteric Buddhist scriptures, those who use Tantra incorrectly will be sickly and short-lived during their lifetime and will fall into the Vajra Hell after they die.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows very clearly the powerfulness of Tantra, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had practiced Taoism with his father when Rinpoche was young. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s father repeatedly warned him that he should not use the Taoist methods to do anything violating morality and the law of cause and effect. Taoist spells have already been very powerful, not to mention Tantra. Hence, after exposing to Buddhism, especially exposing to Tantra and knowing its excellence and power, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had increasingly severer requirements to himself, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew this kind of karmic retribution is very terrible. If one practices Tantra well and uses it correctly, it not only benefits all sentient beings, but also benefits one oneself. So, before transmitting you any Tantra, a guru who really wants to transmit Tantra will definitely have severe requirements to your behaviors, because if you do not have the capacity of practicing Tantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will have crimes even to let you hear Tantra.

One year, in a Buddhist center in NeiHu, after completing a Buddha dharma lecture and descending the Dharma Throne, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang asked the believers whether they had questions. As a result, a female believer asked His Holiness, “Does Tibetan Buddhism have Qigong?” His Holiness just looked at her and then ignored her without answering the question.

In the market, there are some books about Tantra. The content of some of them were recorded and then translated from the lectures of Tantra taught by some Rinpoches in foreign countries. At first, these lecture notes might be just circulated among the believers; gradually they turned into books that could be purchased from the market. There are many Chinese versions of the books about Tantra in Taiwan. Some of them were translated from the books in Mainland China. During the period of Culture Revolution, mainland Chinese collected many dharma texts from Tibet and translated the Tibetan texts into Chinese. There were some Taiwanese publishers who found this kind of books and printed them in traditional Chinese characters and sold them in Taiwan. In addition, some of the books were recorded and translated into Chinese and sold for profit by some professional translators from the Buddha dharma lectures of some Rinpoches or Dharma Kings. Strictly speaking, they have severely broken the precepts for this kind of behaviors. Hence, you should not buy these books out of curiosity. If you read these books, you might not have the chance to hear Buddha dharma ever!

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recalled that it had been said to everyone: it was time before His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang would transmit the pith instruction of Mahamudra to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche actively reported to His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not have the courage to request for the dharma until reciting 110 thousand times of hundred-syllable mantra. It is obvious that we must be very reverent to Buddha dharma, Buddha dharma of mahayana, as well as Vajrayana. If there is a bit of reverence, there is a bit of virtue. If there is the abundant reverence, there is the abundant virtue.

As a result, regardless of any reason, they consumed their own virtues for withdrawing from requesting for dharma photos of this time. So in the process of learning Buddhism, we must take away the idea of ego. Since we learn Buddhism, it refers to that we clearly know what we learn is the supramundane method. The supramundane method is completely different with our worldly life experience rule and is not learned yet in this life. So you should not apply your knowledge, common sense or experience to judge which is or is not important for the Buddha dharma enlightened by the guru. You like or dislike. I accept or deny. Those are incorrect. That is the kind of discriminate mindset.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the protection wheel previously, did anyone say “one item for each family?” Some people even felt too few. Some disciples, who have the grandsons, even came to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for another one. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the Buddha statue of Vajrasattva or jade pendant, did anyone feel too much? As to the dharma photos, some feel that is too much! They even said that it saves money for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and lamination is very expensive. So the female disciple who said that today immediately had the backache. That is her karmic retribution. So people easily make mistake. Mistake for what? It is not that you are stupid or smart. Firstly, it is the discrimination. Secondly, you often think you understand the counterpart and apply you judgment to execute something. So the problem just occurs. As a result, there were more than ten disciples repenting today. Some disciples truly repented but some still exhibited their capabilities or understanding. In fact, the dharma protectors and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche clearly know whether you have repentance or not. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wishes every disciple in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center can learn and understand from today’s event.

As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often reminds and warns everyone that we must always be cautious before attaining Buddhahood. We should always repent and correct ourselves before getting enlightened and realization. We must not be self-satisfied. Learning Buddhism is absolutely not referring to, as you think, something the guru gives you. The guru just teaches you an approach but it is you, instead of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, to do. So, if you are still not determined or do not repeatedly listen to the tape of “Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices”, it is very possible for you to get into troubles.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche queried the disciple, who had done 50 push ups, how did he feel? The disciple reported that he felt uncomfortable. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: you are just 22 years old but feel uncomfortable after doing 50 push ups. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can do 100 push ups at the age of 50 years old. The younger you those people are, the worse health you have. It is terrible and how could you do full prostration in the future?

Hoping that everyone can take the repenting they did in the beginning of today’s puja as you were repenting too. You had also made the mistake which they made. Everyone always hoped that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not know things they do. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had also enlightened: as to your private life, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would never intervene or query you. But as to the aspect of Buddha dharma, it must be disciplined. So if you had hidden from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche very much in learning Buddhism, you should seriously repent today. You all had made mistakes. Nobody had never made mistakes. If we can truly repent, we just have the opportunity to make us liberate from the cycle of reincarnation, as well as to help others liberate from cycle of incarnation. The effect of Mahamudra was intended to be enlightened to everyone today. But it took so much time to repent today. Next, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have a brief introduction about the theory of Mahamudra to you. Then, extraordinary four preliminary practices would be transmitted. In order to learn the auspicious dharma, you must correct your body, speech and mind. Be sure not to repeatedly make mistakes. Be sure not to make mistakes again after repenting. “Repentance” means that one takes the responsibility after making mistakes and never makes mistakes again. If making mistakes again, that is not repentance but apologies. Everyone should remember that.
