Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei, enlightened the important meaning of taking refuge, and accepted 57 believers to be Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples. After the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceeded to meet believers from 4:50 pm to 5:50 pm gave enlightenment to 18 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world.

Before the puja, there was one female disciple accompanying with her husband and daughter, who all are Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples, shared the process of her daughter was helped by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Her daughter had a fever on May 10. The doctor told them that there were two possible causes for the children having a fever recently. One was the Enterovirus, another one was mumps virus. Due to there was neither herpes nor rash on her daughter’s mouth, the doctor diagnosed that it might be infected by mumps virus, the process of having fever would take 6 days to 8 days, after that her daughter would be recovered naturally. Therefore the doctor gave the prescription of antipyretic to let her daughter take medicines and being observed at home.

On May 12, she found that her daughter had a fever to 40.2 C with shivering. They took their daughter to the Children Hospital at midnight. After the examination of blood test and X-ray, the doctor told them that there was no symbol of inflammation; the doctor instructed them to let their daughter take the medicine, drink more water and get lots of rest at home. On the morning of Sunday, May 15, they went back to see the doctor again. During that time, her daughter looked well, except there was still a slight fever. The doctor also took X-ray for her, but there was no any problem. Before they left the hospital, they asked doctor if the fever was lasted for a long time, whether her illness would be turned into lung inflammation or not? The doctor replied them: “Her mental status is good that she could reply the answer, which can save lots of time for examination. Besides there is no any inflammation for her ears or throat. The problem of self-immunization will be solved after today or tomorrow. If you feel worried about her, you can stay here to have an intravenous drip and observation care in hospital”. Therefore they decided to leave hospital and proceeded to attend the puja in the afternoon.

Before the puja, her daughter had took the medicine to reduce her fever, however before the ritual of practicing Dharma Protector of Drikung Kagyu Achi, she was shivering and looked like uncomfortable, meanwhile her fever was reached to 41.5 C. She immediately took her to the washroom and gave her a Fever-reducing suppository, a dharma brother saw her was nervous and immediately gave her daughter a nectar pill after realizing her problem. After the puja was finish, her daughter’s condition was mitigated, she took her daughter’s temperature was 37.6 C after going home. Till the afternoon of next day, her daughter started to cough and wished to make prostration. Her husband took her daughter to make prostration in front of the mandala at home, and told her daughter that Grandpa Rinpoche would protect her, she would be well soon. After 10 minutes of the dinner, her daughter vomited out all of the food because she was uncomfortable. After that, her daughter tried to eat food due to she was hungry. But it was in vain for 4 times or 5 times, her temperature was 39.8 C with coughing and panting. Therefore they took her to the hospital for emergency care. After one night later, the result of blood test was found that the white blood cell count were 18,000 and infection index was 160, therefore the doctor instructed her daughter to be hospitalized. The next day morning, she was transferred to the general sickroom and took an X-ray for her chest. There was a white shadow between her lung and heart. Meanwhile, the doctor was pale with fear and stammered out that her condition was changed too fast to imagine it. In order to monitor and to take care of her illness, they arranged her to be stayed in the ICU. The doctor emphasized that there was no problem for the X-ray on May12, May15. But it was an unexpectedly effect on May 17, therefore the doctor insisted that they had to watch the X-ray because it was a special case.

After her husband came to the intensive care unit, there came another 2 or 3 doctors of visiting staffs and they said that they definitely do their best to cure her daughter. At that spot, her daughter’s beat rate reached 170 times per minutes. Oxygen saturation is OK but had shortness of breath, which was about 70 to 80 times per minutes(normally below 40.) The body temperature was around 39 to 39.5 °C and started coughing. Because it take at least 2 days to know what virus did her daughter get infected. So doctors applied antibiotics to cure firstly. After observing for 24 hours, intubation may be needed if the shortness of breath was continuing. She knows that she did not take good care of her daughter at all to let her daughter have such suffering. She was helpless then and wondered what she could do. Did she have to have a phone call to seek helps? Her husband said that Most Venerable Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche met with believers for 6 hours on Saturday and was very laborious. There would be also the puja on Sunday. The disciples should make Most Venerable Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche rest more. After more than 10 minutes of consideration, she still selfishly dialed to the antique store of Glorious Jewel Jewellery Co. to reported that her daughter was in the intensive care unit.

About 30 minutes later, the dharma brother in the store returned a call and said that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked: did she bring the child to visit elders within last two weeks? She reported that she brought her daughter to visit her father-in-law in a nursing home every week. Most Venerable Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that there was a being following from the nursing home. He also promised to transferring the being’s consciousness at the Chod puja. At the same time, he bestowed blessings upon her daughter. In addition, he requested them to feed her daughter with the nectar pills and nectar water. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind is so exquisite. He worried that it may be difficult to feed with nectar pills in the intensive care unit so he also asked them to contact a dharma brother, who is a doctor, to come to help. Because that dharma brother was in the TaoYuan branch and could possibly arrive at 5 o’clock. So they immediately enter the intensive care unit to ask doctors for permitting them to feed her child with nectar pills and nectar water. The doctors claimed that the child was not permitted to take those since the ingredients were unknown and it may obstruct treatment. Therefore, they showed the will to sign the agreement and the doctors just allowed them to feed her daughter with nectar pills and nectar water. Compassionate Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also asked her to report her daughter’s condition detailedly every time after she entered the intensive care unit to see her daughter. Most Venerable Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ordered them, the couple both, to make full prostrations in the center during morning and evening practice sessions to make dedication to beings until the Chod puja. It was 1:00 pm already.

At 2:00 pm when her daughter was sent to the incentive unit care, her heartbeat reached the range of 145 to 160 times per minute. Her blood oxygen was normal, and she breathed 50 to 60 times per minute. Her did not cough that much and got better than one hour ago. Some yellowish and thicker mucus ran from her nose. She was able to fall asleep for a while. After the visit, they immediately reported back their daughter’s condition. And the dharma brother told them that Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been bestowing blessing and help to their daughter. At 8:00 pm, the little girl woke up. She asked in a low voice: “Where is grandfather Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche?” And the female follower asked her daughter: “Has grandfather Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche been always protecting and blessing you? Hasn’t he?” Her little daughter nodded and said: “Yes.”

On 11:00 am the next day, she entered the intensive unit care to visit her daughter. On the doorway she just heard her daughter crying that she was hungry, and she wanted to drink milk and eat grandfather Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s cookies. The nurse comforted her daughter by telling her the milk was now heated and she could drink it soon, but she should not eat cookies. At that time her daughter was not that panting but in a better condition. Her body temperature was around the range of 38 to 38.5 degrees C. Her blood oxygen was normal, and she breathed 50 times per minute. At 8:00 pm, her daughter was even able to sit up to watch TV. This is all due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing with great compassion.

She felt deeply repentant and sorry to sentient beings as well as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. As she did not take care of her daughter well, she just bothered Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who was busy in Shanghai, due to her fault. She wasted guru’s virtue and energy, while more sentient beings need Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help.

In the evening, outside the intensive care unit there was a woman coming to have a small talk with the female follower. She said they looked bad yesterday morning but now already look much better. She asked if their child had been alright or not. The female follower told her it is due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing that her child just recovered soon and was transferred to the general ward from intensive unit care. Then she asked the woman why she also looked exhausted and how long she had been in the hospital. The woman said she had stayed in the hospital since middle of April, and more than 20 days passed. She even told her that although she stayed in the lounge, but in fact her spirit was in the intensive unit care, fighting with the ghost, so that she was very tired and weak. She had to keep the ghosts away from her child, as she was a spirit medium. Hearing this, the female follower was taken aback for a while. And then she told the woman that her guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, has ever enlightened that although Taoism is fierce, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s father was a Taoist, however, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally experienced his father’s dying process and found Taoism is not able to resolve the issue of birth and death. She took out the book “Happiness and Suffering” from bag and opened for her to read. Then she asked the woman if she would like to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and pray for help of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helps sentient beings with the power of compassion without the need to fight with ghosts, the result will be of great difference.

The woman said both she and her husband were famous mediums in southern Taiwan. The woman would think about it. Three days later, when the disciple met the woman again, the woman said her child had had cerebral hemorrhage in the right brain and had connected to an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machine. Her child’s GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) was 3. They had conducted rituals for the child. The child had to depend on himself in the following seven days. Even if the child became better, he would have to be amputated. This disciple still encouraged the woman to seek an audience with the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche because Rinpoche would definitely help to reduce her child’s sufferings. However, she still declined the offer eventually. This was a small episode outside the intensive care ward. But this episode let her feel that the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, being a strong refuge, had protected each disciple and this let her mind rely on the guru. She was no longer like the person before taking refuge, who had asked around like a headless fly, had thrown divination blocks, had had a confused and uncertain mind waiting for the doctor’s answer, and had asked why. She must make a determined effort to modify herself, must always contemplate birth, death, and impermanence, and must not have the mindset of seeking blessings and luck.
During the period when her daughter had been in the Intensive Care ward, she had seen many children suffering inside. Some children, only seven or eight months old, had used respirators; and doctors had told their parents that if the condition was bad, the children had to have tracheostomy performed. She was really very sad to hear this kind of conversation. These children had suffered so much pain in such a young age. They still have a long way to go in the future. What should they do? After listening to doctors’ explanations, some parents cried together.
Soon, three days later her daughter was transferred to the general ward. On Saturday, she brought her daughter to the Buddhist Center to thank the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and she thought she was very respectful. But she did not help her daughter to change into tidy clothes before going. She was actually both rude and not respectful. As the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cared about her daughter, she still talked back in defiance that her daughter had worn like this in the hospital. She was completely disrespectful to the guru; she also let the guru worry that her daughter who had not yet recovered would get ill again due to her careless mother. The His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also held and blessed her daughter and enlightened her that her daughter’s body had not convalesced and, after the daughter was discharged from the hospital, she should let her daughter take Chinese medicine to nurse her body.

While her younger daughter was in the intensive care unit, there were so many dharma brothers giving helps and cares. She really appreciated. Although their family do not have so many relatives and friends, they feel that they are in a large family. This large family is the “Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center”.

2 kinds of antibiotic were taken during the hospitalization. Then doctors said the antibiotic taken on the first day was the most effective. But they still cannot detect what kind of virus did her younger daughter infect. They said it was influenza virus at once, but then also said Adenoviridae. They finally said it was virus associated hemophagocytic syndrom and caused the pneumonia. In fact, this is already not important since the the guru had told them answer.

During the above events, she did many wrong things. She would take this opportunity to repent to Most Venerable Vajra Guru as well as Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
(1) She did not obey the guru’s teaching to frequently think of death and impermanence. She did not consider that good things would become bad at any time but just had the attachment of being in good days. She did not think that the death is always nearby. It is needed to repent at any time and cannot do any bit of minor evilness.
(2) She opinionatedly thought that she was filial to bring her daughter to see her father-in-law in the nursing home. She thought filial duty was completed as such. She totally forgot that the younger daughter is hard to have because of recurrent pregnancy losses. It was totally the blessings bestowed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and she just could smoothly have the younger daughter. But she did not take care of her daughter well. It just consumed the virtues of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.
(3) She opinionatedly thought that she was reverent and brought her daughter from the hospital to seek an audience with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. But she did not make her daughter wear neatly. That is very irreverent and impolite. The guru also needed to consider that her daughter may catch a cold.
(4) She opinionatedly respected the guru. But she contradicted while the guru spoke. That was the most incorrect and unforgivable behavior.
(5) She opinionatedly thought that she was very obedient. Instead, she had few self-awareness and did not act in accordance with the teachings. She did not reflect on herself before sleeping everyday and surely did not repent at once.

She also deeply repented and will not make mistakes as such. The attendees should take her as a example and follow the Vajra Guru to learn Buddhism well. She also thanked that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helps her and her family. She also prayed His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to be healthy, always inhabit in this world, always turn the dharma wheel and benefit all sentient beings.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei, and held refuge ceremony for believers. At the beginning of the puja, the attendees recited the dedication text leading by the ordained disciple, in the meantime, a male disciple yawned. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s eyesight is extremely superior, pointed out this disciple and scolded him. It was just on the beginning of the puja, did this disciple fell tired or boring? This disciple was instructed to go the rear area of the venue to attend the puja.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceeded to enlightened: Today’s puja would have a ritual for those believers who had registered for taking refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before. In 1997, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang agreed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to use the name “Glorious Jewel” in remembrance of Lord Jigten Sumgon, and established Taiwan’s “Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center”. In order to spread out Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accepted lots of disciples these years, as well as expelling lots of disciples. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were not so stern, the space of this center would not be enough, it would be 3 times or 4 times of this space. The disciples who were expelled before could afford to setup for 10 centers.

It is just like Lord Jigten Sumgon who was the founder of the Drikung Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism mentioned before: He would not teach those kinds of dharma if there was no mention in the Buddha dharma or transmission in the lineage of Drikung Kagyu. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche adopts the same way, if there is no mention in Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not do it. If there is mentioned in Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can achieve it as well. It is because that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completely follows the teaching of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and instructions in the lineage of Drikung Kagyu to teach disciples.

Maharatnakuta sutra, which was enlightened by Buddha Sakyamuni, it introduces that including the practitioner who cultivates Buddhism on the Bodhisattva path, from the level of first-bhumi Bodhisattva to the level of ten-bhumi Bodhisattva, the discrepancy in his body, speech, and mind with general people. For the phenomenon in the cosmos, all the cause and effect, as well as the questions which would be asked by people, had the answers mentioned in this sutra.

The sutra had mentioned that there are invisible worms in the eyebrows, eyelashes and the surface of neck from the beginning when one is born. About two years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche watched the TV Channel, it reported that the modern scientists found and approved that there are the parasite in the eyebrows, eyelashes and the surface of neck from the beginning when one is born, it was invisible unless we use the microscope. No matter how to clean it, the parasite is still existed there. Moreover, if you use the soap try to clean it more, it would let them propagate much more. Before 3000 years ago, Buddha could see the phenomenon of a fact without using any instrument which needs to be discovered by today’s scientists. It was merely people could not see it; therefore they did not believe what Buddha said.

The modern people’s eyelashes are liable to have irritation; it is because that you touched unclear air, water or food and affect those parasites. You would find some people having the granulation on their necks. It was because that they ate lots of meat, the parasites absorb the nutrition to grow up. Ones who eat the meat are liable to have the sarcoma on the neck, even if there is no sarcoma at all, they would have the trouble on the tonsil or lymphatic. Why ones get older, their eyebrows and hairs are liable to drop down and remaining less and less? It is because that as one grows older, the lack of Qi and blood will cause the nutrition cannot reach to the root of hairs. When the parasites are unable to acquire the nutrition, they have to eat the nutrition from the hair follicle; therefore the hair will drop off naturally. You can infer one whether his Qi and blood is enough or not by referring to the condition of eyebrows

It had been mentioned in Maharatnakuta sutra, some people will curry favor with believers to misrepresent Buddha dharma in order to have the worldly fame and wealth in the degenerate age. Buddha dharma have become so commercialized by some people, many people just only wish to eliminate their trouble by learning Buddhism. To learn Buddhism is not for blessings, some people thought that Buddhism is the same as other religions to advise people to do good deeds. However, doing good deeds is the basic requirement of being a human being, as long as you are the human being, you should do good deeds. Buddhism is referring to the way of liberating from the death, birth and reincarnation. The biggest difference with other religions is that Buddhism is referring to believe the cause and effect, the law of cause and effect which is existed in the cosmos will affect you to be fallen into reincarnation. Don’t think that you can learn Buddhism by spending lots of money, or attending the tour to make pilgrimages can let your realize the meaning of Buddha dharma. Some people thought that they could stay at home to attain the achievement only by watching the TV program of Buddhism; they would feel free for this kind of style. That is an incorrect concept.

It is very important to have the motivation of learning Buddhism. When one would like to have the arousal of aspiration to learn Buddhism, it is referring to generate aspiration Bodhichitta. If the motivation of taking refuge is incorrect, for example, you just care about your benefit or wish your trouble will be eliminated; it is unable to generate aspiration to learn Buddhism. Since you would like to take refuge to learn Buddhism, you should follow the Buddha’s teaching.

In the current society, they would depend on the amount of donation to decide your seat in the venue. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not do it by this way, no matter what is your social status; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will treat you equally. There was a politician who would like to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche solitarily; But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche refused this proposal. If he would like to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he should queue in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center on Saturday which is the same as others, unless he would like to discuss the national security issue. Buddhism stresses the importance of equality. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never compromise for spreading out Buddha dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not be a “privileged Rinchen” for someone, as well as the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center will not be a privileged center for someone.

Recently a female disciple met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and claimed that she is a believer of a famous Master. But when she would like to meet Master because she had illness, she was refused by the people around the Master; they told her that the Master could not see the female believer solitarily. Actually the sutra has mentioned that a male Master cannot meet a female believer solitarily. But this Master can meet her in public, since he had taken the offerings, he should give help to her instead of looking for excuse. When the believers need the help by the Buddhism, could we say no to them? As long as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was in Taiwan, he would meet believers to give them help. When you used to be a believer to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not get your offering, he would still help you.

When you are at the beginning of learning Buddhism, do not think that you can immediately liberate sentient beings. Don’t be so arrogant for that. At the beginning of learning Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never thought that one day he would enlighten the Buddha dharma on the dharma throne, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just knew that learning Buddhism could help him how to deal with death when it would be coming. Learning Buddhism is not that you would see Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, or you would think that you would attain the achievement when you hear that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas talk to you, those concepts would misrepresent the Buddha dharma.  It has mentioned in Diamond Sutra “it would be the evil concept if you would find me in colors or forms, nor should you find me in sounds”. It was also mentioned in Shurangama Sutra, if you thought that you were seeing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas talk to you, you would be arrogant to think that you have attained the achievement. The spirit of evils would fly into your mouth, you would generate the arrogant mind and unable to cultivate it anymore. It was also mentioned in the sutra that there would be Buddhists disciples who would destroy the Buddha dharma in the degenerate age.

Buddha Shakyamuni enlightened the dharma for 49 years in the world. What speeched is the dharma for benefiting beings. As to the eighty-four thousand afflictions of beings, various dharma methods for curing were enlightened.  So there are so much content of Buddha dharma and many sutras are kept. Unlike other religions, Catholicism mainly keeps Rosary, Christianity just keeps Old Testament and New Testament, as well as Taoism just has Daodejing of Laozi. Why did Buddha Shakyamuni speeched for the long time of 49 years? Because human minds are too complicated. And Buddha dharma is to teach human beings the method of leaving from the suffering ocean of the cycle of reincarnation. It also teaches human beings how to turn from black karma to white karma, as well as from evil to good.

Buddha is not to promote the rules invented by Buddha but just introduce the true condition, which Buddha has realized and originally exists in the universe, to worldly people. Buddha unstoppingly speeched the dharma at every places for 49 years. Every word and behavior are the Buddha dharma. Unlike you, you are the Buddhists in the center, but not the Buddhists outside the center. The Buddha are always in the meditation state for 24 hours a day to demonstrate Buddha dharma, as well as teach worldly people the method of liberating from cycle of life and death. Unlike some outside people, they assemble groups to tour but claim that they propagate Buddha dharma.

You must have full believing to yourselves. To believe what? Believe that all beings have the Buddha nature, so the Buddhahood must be attained by obeying Buddha’s teachings. So we name Buddha Shakyamuni as the root teacher but not the hierarch or master, etc. As to the root guru you have heard, it does mean that all of your things fundamentally belong to your guru. The root refers to the essence and Buddha nature you originally have. While the Buddha got enlightened to attain Buddhahood, Buddha had ever said that beings, like Buddhas, all have Buddha nature. But beings have not attained Buddhahood, why? Every sentient being, not only human, has the condition to attain Buddhahood. Once one correctly and strivingly amends own behaviors, the enlightenment would be gotten in the future.

It is depicted in the Sutra of the Great Vows of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha that because Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha knows beings’ minds easily slack, the king of ghosts is dispatched to monitor those people who arouse the heart to learn Buddha. The king of ghosts is not to harm you but to monitor you. The ‘slack’ is applied here instead of ‘retrograde'(退轉). You are not qualified to be described as retrograde. Retrograde means that a Bodhisattva, who may be from the first level to tenth level, retrogrades the heart to liberate beings. Namely, the Bodhicitta is decreased. You can only be called as slackness, or laziness in other words. Do not casually say some terms of Buddha dharma to violate oral karma and have lying words. Before getting real enlightenment, slackness is easily had. You should notice that it is not said here that Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha monitor you but the king of ghost are dispatched. So you should no longer regard that you can see the Bodhisattvas.

When a king of ghosts guards and supports you to learn Buddha, it does not mean that you will do everything smoothly. Instead, sometimes it may make your beloved child strangely have a high fever, which just makes you know that it is needed to seek the guru for bestowing blessings. It also reminds you whether you listen to the guru’s words or not. To help you learn Buddha, deliberately let you see disliked things. You just know you have sufferings and need to learn Buddha dharma. So far, someone may ask: isn’t it said that non-human cannot infringe after taking refuge? Yes, it cannot harm you but it just monitors you aside. When you are not in accordance with the dharma or lazy, it reminds you some and pushes you to let you know that you are wrong. You can correct your mindset immediately and repent right away. So it is to help you but not to harm you. You all are so sophisticated that you just appear if something occurs and then utilize the guru. But if you are determined to learn Buddha, it is fine for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to be utilized by you for a while.

Many people pray for taking refuge as they think it is a good thing that will soon benefit them, or they can listen to much Buddha Dharma after taking refuge. However, these thoughts are just one kind of desire. Yesterday there was a believer who came to implore for taking refuge. Being asked by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche why she would like to take refuge, she said it is because she wanted to fix her bad temper. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that one does not need to cultivate Buddhism in order to fix his temper, as he just needs to read holy books and get well-preserved. In fact, this thought is also a kind of desire as the one hopes to be praised and considered him making progress by others.

Spiritual lectures are very popular now. It costs around thousand dollars or ten thousand dollars for one lecture. This is in fact to satisfy one’s desire. Some people seek refuge because they are confronted with lawsuit, out of health, or suffer in one’s estates. These are also their desire. Even the thought of learning more dharma is also one kind of desire. Those who want things to get better do not actually need to learn Buddhism. They merely need to donate their monthly income, and after few years their things will definitely change. These thoughts are all desire. Those who seek refuge with these desires, having improper mind, will not stay here for long but get dispelled. It is not Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who dispels them but they themselves will leave. As they gradually find that what they want does not manifest, they would not stay here anymore.

Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas just manifest one of them to salvage you according to what level you have practiced and attained. Sambhogakaya helps the practitioners who have attained the position of Bodhisattva rather than you the ordinary. It is not possible for you to see Sambhogakaya. You merely can see Nirmanakaya that transforms into any kinds of forms, such as that same as yours, to help sentient beings. Sometimes when you are aspired by reciting one phase of Buddhist sutra or seeing the stupa, you gain some realization on Buddha Dharma. And that phrase of sutra or the stupa is just the incarnation of a Bodhisattva. Before you obtain the first level of Bodhisattva, what you have seen coming to help you, including your guru of the same kind as you, is all the incarnation of a Bodhisattva. Things of one kind come together. Only those who achieve the position of Bodhisattva would see Sambhogakaya. Hence, how could you see Sambhogakaya or even Dharmakaya?

It is not because Buddhas and Bodhisattva have discriminate mind for you not to Dharmakaya. The reason you could not see Dharmakaya is that you don’t possess sufficient virtue and cannot enter the space of them. They, however, are able to come to your space. It is just like the case: How can a poor person stay beside a billionaire? There may be two situations. In one situation, the rich man is so lonely that he wants a company. Therefore he may feel sympathy and let the poor to be his follower. In the other situation, the poor just works and serves for the rich so he can stay beside him. Even if the poor insists on making friends with the rich, he won’t make it. For example, it would not be easy for the poor to arrange his dress code. He may wear his best cloths on the first day, but he cannot just wear it every day. It would look like uniform! In this way, the poor cannot follow up the rich who wears different cloths every day!

Some people may think they can learn different dharma after taking refuge. However, this kind of mind is improper. For the one to whom his guru is going to convey dharma, he ought to correctly develop his mind, have proper causes and conditions, and possess proper root capacity. According to the Sutra, if a follower is conditioned but his guru does not transmit dharma to him, the guru would just break Samaya precept, which leads him to fall into the Vajra hells. Relatively, if one is not qualified to learn some dharma, according to Vajrayana doctrines, the guru should not even just mention about the dharma. After you take refuge, no matter in Mahayana or in Vajrayana, you would start your cultivation beginning from Exoteric Buddhist doctrines. Don’t think that you take refuge in Tibetan Buddhism so you can say you are practicing Tanra, by which you would just speak deceitful words. Without guru’s rectifying or monitoring, one cannot learn it. In Tantra, it is divided into Kriya , charya , Yoga Tantra, and Anuttarayoga Tantra. While Yoga Tantra, and Anuttarayoga Tantra won’t be transmitted, basically what is transmitted to you, such as empowerment, is in the field of Kriya.

Yesterday there was a believer who took her son to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She reported that her son often acted weird, like shrugging his shoulders and making strange voice. This believer said that she had already brought her son to many Buddhist temples and Taoist Temples as well as recited many dedication prayer. However, more she did, her son’s situation became worse and made more strange voice. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped to give blessing to the boy, indeed he saw the boy barking and acting like a dog. The boy’s mother, beside the boy, kept saying it was so fearful. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche now asked the surrounding people to support the boy with hands. After being blessed, the boy became prostrated and fell down in a faint. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed to let the boy sleep aside for a while and then use the  Obstacle Elimination Grass (incense grass)  to expel noxious influences so that the boy would gradually wake up.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that this is the second case he met. Before, he has also met different situations that are not necessarily regarding to ghost possession. It might be other kind of spirit that possesses it. The possessed one and the possessing one are both suffering. Why it is helpless for the dog spirit by taking her son to Buddhist temples everywhere and reciting Buddhist Sutra? It is because the dog spirit cannot understand it. Therefore, without the experience of true practice, one would only have one method to help beings. As for an authentic guru with dharma eye, he is able to comprehend what the problem is, find the cause, and solve it from the root. Only by doing so is it helpful for the spirit. And the reason why the recitation of sutra is useless to it lies in that the practitioner does not possess virtue nor ability to let the dog spirit soon accept it before helping it with Buddha Dharma.

You can have the common sense that one who is possessed by ghost or animal spirit would be prostrated after the spirit leaves the one’s body. Sometimes the one would become stiff or even faint. After taking a rest for a while, the one would gradually recover to normal. And the reason to use the  Obstacle Elimination Grass (incense grass)  is for expelling the noxious influences that remains in the body and it is helpful for health and really good for you. It was not until the mother saw the situation that she came to believe that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to help her son. Those who do not abstain from killing and teach children would meet this kind of circumstance.

As for the follower who stepped in front and shared her story with you, did you understand what she said? She red her story, as if she was reciting a sutra. Why the ghost came to find her daughter’s trouble rather than her husband? It is because she would get nervous and worried only if her daughter has trouble, as her daughter is her favorite.  If it were her husband who got sick, she would have said it served him right and had no feeling about it. When she took her daughter to the venue to express their gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her that she should let the child wear one undershirt so as to avoid catching cold. However, she right away answered back that her child was vested by the hospital in that way. Why did she answer back? It is because she did not believe and still be slack. She broke the refuge vow and it also showed that the couple did not believe in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche from their mind. One who does believe will not retort.

Some people say opening the Vajra Sutra could let ghosts leave instead of approaching you. But it depends on whom that opens the Sutra. Does the one have mercy, compassion, Bodhicitta, and merit? Is he able to know the being’s causes and conditions and to provide help? If the one does not have the ability to know the cause or he does not possess virtue, the ghost will not leave, or even being closer to you while you open the Buddhist Sutra. Those who become ghosts still have human thought of hatred. Ghosts cannot just be expelled away by you. Theoretically, as the follower’s daughter has taken refuge, she should not have been harmed by non-human beings. But why did she still meet this thing? It is because the ghost did not come in order to harm her but to help her. The ghost just let the follower gets to know that her mind of learning Buddhism is improper and slack.

Now, a male believer raised his legs during the puja. The believer was instructed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to take a shield possessed by a ghost to the puja, but he did not show reverence. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche right away scolded the believer for his act: As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has provided him so much help and also gave the enlightenment just now, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the only one who is able to solve the believer’s problem, shouldn’t the believer attentively listen to the Dharma talk?

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued his teaching. The great Gampopa said, “As for a guru that has the Dharma eyes, attainment, realization, and genuine physical and mental realization of the Buddhist teachings, if a disciple can serve and rely on the guru in trust and reverence in accord with the Buddhist teachings, the disciple will most certainly attain enlightenment. On the contrary, if a guru does not have any attainment and realization, the disciple’s wholehearted trust and reverence will still be in vain.”

Heavenly eyes and Dharma eyes are different. One sees things with heavenly eyes and realizes with Dharma eyes. Moreover, there are many levels of heavenly eyes as well. Some people claim that they can see ghosts. What they have is nothing but ghostly eyes. One who has attained heavenly eyes can understand the intricate changes of all the matters in the universe. One who has attained Dharma eyes can know all the causes and effects as well as how to help liberate sentient beings from the cycle of birth and death through the law of cause and condition.

What are attainment and realization (ch. zheng wu)? One’s attainment refers to his level in practice that is in seamless correspondence with the level of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru. Look at the Chinese character wu (i.e. realization), which is a combination of two characters wu and xin (i.e. my mind). Therefore, one’s realization refers to his ability to see his own mind clearly and know what mistakes that he actually made. Ordinary beings live their days with their experiences in life. They have retorted dream-thinking. The Buddhist scriptures say that we are now in the intermediate state. As we have not attained Buddhahood, we still remain in the intermediate state. Without realization, we still have no idea what mistakes we made. Just like the disciple who talked back, she, being judged by Buddhist standards, answered back because she failed to see her own mind clearly, unable to realize that she was simply too lazy. She had no faith in the guru. Why are you told to examine yourself before sleep every day? It is to remind you on a daily basis. Are you capable of knowing about the mistakes you made? Have you violated your precepts or vows? Can you repent at once and refrain from committing such mistakes again? This is a method that helps you attain realization.

A believer whose father had been unconscious for days came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him what he prayed for. He said that he hoped his father could wake up and talk to him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him why he had not spoken much with his father. Now that his father was unconscious, it then occurred to him that he wanted to talk to his father, thinking that his father might have some instructions for him. The believer replied that he had never thought that his father would be such a situation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche added, “You all have experiences being sick and feeling unwell. If you are sick in bed trying to sleep and someone keeps talking to you, won’t you feel annoyed? If you try to force your father to wake up and talk to you, what can you do if he said, ‘Son, I don’t want to die?’ Or, he might say, ‘Son, I want you to go with me.’ Wouldn’t you be freaked out?” Thinking like the believer is actually retorted dream-thinking.

The Buddhist teachings are definitely helpful to you. What do you rely on in order to achieve attainment and realization? You have got to rely on your determination, believing you will attain Buddhahood. Even though you have sufficient faith in attaining Buddhahood, you still need the guru’s guidance. Just as the teaching bestowed by the great Gampopa, you have to trust and rely on a guru that has attainment and realization. You should trust instead of being dependent on the guru. When the guru speaks, what he says is definitely helpful to you. If you refuse to take the advice, you will fail to fulfill your responsibility.

In 2007, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang instructed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to do a 3-month retreat. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang knew that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche runs a lot of businesses and has many disciples. Nevertheless, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang did not ask how long it would take Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to make the arrangements. All His Holiness said was that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche should show up in a certain place at a designated time. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reply was simple. “Yes,” he said. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had absolute faith in the guru, things are achieved naturally. Years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could attain realization at such an old age. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang said that it would be achieved as long as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have faith in the guru. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked another question of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Can Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accomplish the practice of Atiyoga at such an old age? As one who practices Atiyoga normally begins to cultivate practice in his twenties and accomplishes it in his thirties because it takes strength. Never has it been heard that anyone in his forties can accomplish the practice of Atiyoga. However, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang still told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that he could accomplish it with sufficient faith in the guru. There it is. It all depends on your faith in the guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accomplished the practice by means of his absolute trust in the guru. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would also like to encourage you with this statement.

One should have faith in the guru. Such trust should include reverence towards the guru. You should understand why you sought refuge. When you understand it, you then know that you have to follow the instructions given by the Buddha. Believe that you are able to carry out the Buddha’s words and the guru’s instructions. Do find any excuses for your failure. What the guru instructs you to do is something that you can achieve. The fact that you cannot achieve it is no excuse for your failure. Whether you have the determination or not is what matters. It is all about your desires. Do not think that you cannot make it. If you begin with thinking that you can’t, you will create a cause that prevents you from making it. Then, you will actually fail. It is difficult to obtain a human body, to listen to the Buddhist teachings, and to meet with a guru. The guru mentioned here refers to a guru of virtues. As long as you make the decision to carry it out, you will eventually attain Buddhahood in a future lifetime. However, it can only be achieved if you are guided by a guru of virtues to correct your conduct that will lead you to the reincarnation.

A guru’s job is to constantly remind you. When the guru sees that your conduct will lead to a bad result, he will try to let you know with his life and means. Before your fruition ripens, the guru will keep supervising and urging you. Why did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mention the matter of having parasites? It is to tell you that the guru can see your future. You are all very brave and dare to do something without considering its consequences. However, when you are told to let it go, you cannot find any courage to leave it behind. If one’s fruition has ripened, nothing can be done any more. According to Buddha Sakyamuni, the Buddha cannot change the fruition. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche propagates the Buddhist teachings for the benefit of the sentient beings regardless of time and space. He benefits the sentient beings around the clock. However, you are always differentiate things. You only listen when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche speaks to you on the Dharma throne. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche steps down from the Dharma throne, you then consider Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a fool that you can take advantage of.

The Buddhist teachings are not mythical accounts but truth about the universe. As long as you have faith in the guru, you can definitely know what mistake you have made in the past. Through the guidance of the guru, you can then correct your own body, speech, and mind. However, if you have too little trust, it cannot be achieved. Don’t just do nothing but be dependent on your guru. The guru has the Dharma eyes and knows the future. One who is aware of that and has deep faith in the law of cause and effect will most certainly be helped. To have deep faith in the law of cause and effect does not only refer to the negative retribution derived from your killing of an animal such as a rabbit or a chicken. Such a deed is very serious. To have deep faith is to know that even a little evil karma will prevent us from leaving the reincarnation.

We have gotten used to letting our desires run wild in our daily lives, even so in learning Buddhism. Some people think that they can practice by themselves at home. As they don’t have a guru to supervise them, they cultivate practice at home without being scolded. Only the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can scold them, but the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not speak to them. They turn the TV on and watch the Buddhist TV programs that they like. Such a way of learning Buddhism will never lead to any accomplishments. There is an important characteristic in learning Buddhism, which is the need for one to rely on the blessing of the guru. There is no way you can get that by watching the Buddhist programs on TV. The Dharma propagator on TV does not know who they are speaking to. Thereby, it is impossible for him to give blessing.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sought refuge under his Exoteric Buddhist master, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a dream before he almost woke up on the next morning. Seeing himself standing at the entrance of a Buddhist monastery, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pushed open the door of the main temple. There sat Buddha Sakyamuni, radiating with strong golden light. The brightness made Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche step back. At the time, the Exoteric Buddhist master that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sought refuge with told him not to be scared and to go inside. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dared to walk in. The light of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is not black, red, green, or white. It is golden and very powerful. It is so bright that you cannot even dare to open your eyes. Even a practitioner of great capacities can be afraid of the Buddha light with all his previous cultivation in practice, let alone the ordinary people who haven’t learned Buddhism or practiced. They will most certainly fear the light of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and dare not to approach it, failing to receive help from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Without fortune, one would not dare to enter even the door is open. Therefore, why is the ritual of tsok offering conducted in the puja? The purpose of it is to enable you to share the food offering with the guru, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas so as to increase your fortune. It doesn’t mean that you will simply get blessed after eating it.

Making offerings can accumulate one’s fortune. As you know, there are no benefactors in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. No admission fee is charged for puja attendees. For instance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received the believers from 4 pm through 10 pm yesterday and didn’t take offerings from believers who hadn’t sought refuge. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s painstaking efforts were not made for the sake of money. It doesn’t mean that taking offerings is wrong. One must make offerings. However, the monastery should not set up a pricing system for that. Many organizations will begin holding a lot of pujas around these days. Nevertheless, the event organizer should not set up a payment requirement for the puja attendees to make offerings. Instead, it is the believers that should make the decision. If they have enough fortune, they will naturally have enough money offerings for holding the puja. Without enough fortune, it is not good to force the event. Throughout the Buddhist scriptures, it is never said that people should be required to pay a certain amount of money when they attend a puja.

Why does a guru need to have experience in Buddhism? This is because when a guru has experience in Buddhism, the guru can then feel that Buddhism will definitely help the future of all sentient beings, understand the sufferings of all sentient beings, and realize that all sentient beings can only be helped by using compassion and Bodhicitta. A guru is an experienced practitioner. If a guru cannot experience Buddhism in his or her body and mind, he or she cannot come forth to promote Buddhism. That is, if Buddhism does not have any effect on a guru and the guru does not have any real enlightenment, he will have no way to help any sentient being. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often enlightened people that because Buddhism had generated effects on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could then teach you to do the same. If Buddhism had not generated any effect on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddhism would have not generated any effect on you as well. Today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would like to use the words of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to enlighten all of you, “As long as you believe in your guru, you will definitely be able to attain accomplishments on practicing Buddhism.

In Taiwan’s society, every guru claims he is very powerful and has great ability. The regular believers often have difficulties to distinguish them and do not know which guru they should follow for practicing Buddhism. A guru who practices true Buddha Dharma will certainly state clearly his own background, which does not mean a good and strong connection, but refers to his own lineage of cultivation practice. A guru will tell you intentionally or unintentionally his own experience and events of cultivation practices. Those who say that a bodhisattva spoke to him while he fainted in a forest, or a bodhisattva appeared in his dream to tell him his faults in cultivation practices, or he attained supernatural power after hiding under a table for worshiping gods for forty-nine days are speaking fairy tales. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has searched through all Buddhist scriptures; and no Buddhist scripture has stated that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will tell someone something in his or her dreams. If it was so, it would have certainly been recorded in some Buddhist scriptures. It is also not correct if you say that a blue Avalokiteshvara appeared to tell you something. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has only heard of the red Avalokiteshvara and the white Avalokiteshvara, and has not heard of the blue Avalokiteshvara yet.

Do not think that, after taking refuge, all bad things will not happen; instead, after taking refuge, bad things may happen earlier to eliminate your karma such that your obstacles of practicing Buddhism can be eliminated as soon as possible and you can receive lighter effects for your heavy karmic retributions. Those who may fall into the three evil realms may get sick now; those who may go to prison may be sentenced to some other punishments. Three years after taking refuge under Exoteric Buddhism and later under His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a business failure and went bankrupt. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche appreciated His Holiness very much because His Holiness had allowed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to take refuge under him so that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s karmic retribution caused by being stingy, greedy, and reluctant to make offerings from past generations of lives could be handled properly in a year. During the whole year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was so poor that he had no money to eat, and after eating a meal he did not know how to get his next meal. However, other people did not know this. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still went to attend pujas and practiced Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had only NT$1,800 in his pocket. Because of attending a puja that required a printed dharma text, after paying the fee for the printed dharma text, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only had NT$300 remained. This remaining 300 dollars had to cover the living expense of the next 15 days. You have better blessings than Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. No matter how hard your lives are, none of you has no money to eat.

Why so much enlightened is given before the refuge ceremony starts? It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is concerned about that you may be expelled in a short time. As you all know, it is very uneasy for one to have the opportunity to take refuge. Around 15% to 20% of the followers are evicted after they seek refuge. If you don’t have proper mind to take refuge, you would be soon expelled. Even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gets cheated by you for a while, or Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche takes a nap and neglects it, the Dharma Protector will remind Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

When we revere Guru and the Three Jewels, our family will then be auspicious and propitious. If something ominous still happen, it is just because the one’s mind is still evil. Yesterday a couple brought their son to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, saying lots of things had happened to them and their son tried to commit suicide. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first gave them enlightenment and then bestowed blessing to their son. Upon blessing their son, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw there was a ghost possessing the shield in their home. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche promised to salvage the ghost during Chod puja, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked them to take the shield to Sunday’s puja. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also instructed the male believer to attend puja with his wife and son. The male believer, however, immediately said that he could not attend the puja as he had to fly to the U.S for something very important. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave them enlightenment: Is making money more important than salvaging sentient beings? Many people may think it is important to earn money. To Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, however, salvaging is more important than everything! And those who help a being to get rebirth in the Pure Land will gain much merit. As they are the main role, they will have the greatest merit. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just provides assistance. Furthermore, the male believer thought it would just be enough as all of the other people would attend the puja, so that he would not need to go. Having this kind of thought, it shows that the male believer was just making use of Buddha Dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: Even when others are replete with food and drink, will he be full if he does not eat food by himself?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to see wondering ghosts. Wondering ghosts do not possess human beings but an object. Any object could be possessed by a ghost. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever saw the smallest object possessed by a ghost was a small key. Before, there was a follower whose family member purchased a cloth that was possessed by a being. According to the Sutra of the Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, if one recites in accord with dharma ten thousand times of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s names every day, after the thousand days, namely three years, the spirit king will come to protect the one’s home. Reciting in accord with dharma does not refer to the way you do the recitation now. Instead, it depends on whether or not developing Bodhicitta. This will be talked about in a later time. The Sutra does not mention that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva will come to protect you. What it mentions about is the spirit king that will come to guard you. A place where the spirit king stays will not be approached by little demons. Why would the one buy the thing possessed by a spirit? It is because his family was not auspicious and propitious, which is the result of their commit of killing and not practicing virtue. This is not to discourage you from buying any thing. If people do not consume, many people will lose their jobs.

At the time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the believer to take the shield in the front for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to purify and bless it by sprinkling. After that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught the believer how to dispose the shield, and also asked him to attend Chod puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the followers that they should not learn what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just did, thinking it would take effect by sprinkling and reciting. In fact, it is not that easy.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to conduct the ritual of taking refuge ceremony for those believers who registered for it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that taking refuge is extremely important. It is more important than any other things, including your getting married. You all know the refuge ceremony is seldom held by Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. There are at most one or two times per year. Today the refuge in Exoteric Buddhism is given to you. And first the Five Precepts will be transmitted to you to observe. The Five Precepts, namely abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and alcohol, are the basic foundation of all precepts. When you receive the precepts, you ought to observe them and then you would accumulate virtue. Some people keep precepts before receiving them; For example, some non-Buddhist religions ask their believers to adopt vegetarian diet. But they still cannot get protected by the essence of the precepts. A guru will then observe you. If your guru perceives that you are correcting yourself and do what you are supposed to do, he will then convey the Bodhisattva precepts and Vajrayana precepts.

Lay devotees have to abide by the Five Commandments:
(1) Refraining from killing – Should not eat meat anymore after taking refuge.
(2) Refraining from stealing.
(3) Refraining from having sexual misconducts.
(4) Refraining from giving improper speeches – including of refraining from saying harsh words, refraining from telling lies, refraining from luring others with words and refraining from divisive speech.
(5) Refraining from drinking alcoholic beverage.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also gave a detailed explanation of the things you should pay attention to after your taking refuge.

One can get eight benefits from seeking refuge:

(1) To become a Buddhist
(2) To become the support for all the precepts
(3) To avoid all harms caused by non-human beings. After taking refuge, good deities and dharma protector would protect. But if you are not obedient and violate the refuge precept, the dharma protector would leave you.
(4) To relieve or even eliminate karmic crimes
(5) To increase and expand the provisions of merits and virtues in one’s mind
(6) To avoid falling into the three lower realms
(7) To generate auspicious path in his mind
(8) To continue learning until attaining the supreme Bodhi and benefiting the sentient beings

Do not enthusiastically demand to do morning, noon or evening practice sessions right after taking refuge. There are no such things for you to do. Morning and evening practice sessions are made in the center only. After taking refuge, in the beginning you should not listen to others to speech Buddha dharma. You should not casually turn on TV to watch those Buddhism programs, either. It only increases your terms of Buddhism and you just could know the common sense of these terms. You should not learn Buddha dharma from other centers in this lineage. You may think you can discuss Buddha dharma with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after you understanding more. It is not because the Buddha dharma taught by others is incorrect or they teach poorly. But it is because every guru has different steps of enlightening Buddha dharma. If wandering, you would easily get confused. So you do not have to make the condition so complicated. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will transmit dharma to you step by step. Dharma protector Achi and dharma method of Avalokiteshvara are transmitted firstly. While the time is adequate, reciting mantras may be transmitted to you.

The Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center has no such group for flower arrangement or oil painting but this is a pure place for learning Buddhism. It is also not for you to make friends. But it is strange that some disciples in this center came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche while preparing for marriage. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then just knew they are in relationship. It shows that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never intervened the disciples’ private lives.

The center does not set up a foundation but an association. No funds are raised from outer people. Only members can financially support. Expenditure is shared among the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s principle is that the center does not need to keep too much money but just enough. Disputes are easily had while there is too much money. So, do not suddenly donate too much, say 1 million NTD. It is not good for donating too much money suddenly and problems would easily occur. No loan is permitted among disciples because the disputes are easily had if having monetary relationship. But if it happens that one has no money to take a bus and needs to borrow to ride, you should not deny lending and should know how to be contingent. Previously an example occurred that one disciple told the other disciple about her insurance business and needed to borrow 1 million NTD. They had the agreement about the payback date but the borrower did not repay. The lender then just said something. This center is for all to learn Buddha but not to make friends. If there are borrowers or lenders, all of them would be dispelled from of the center. So the above two were dispelled and not permitted to come, because they do not act in accordance with the teachings.

People who took refuge today would get a refuge certificate. As to the photos on the refuge certificate, the center dharma photo is Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön, the left dharma photo is His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang, the 37th throne holder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage and right dharma photo is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche whom you take refuge from. You have to find the time to plead with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for changing dharma name for you. There is the Refuge Prayer on the refuge certificate. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche orally transmitted Refuge Prayer once and requested every disciple to recite at least 3 to 7 times a day in order to remind yourself. That is the practice session what you need to do! Many people newly take refuge and do not understand the meaning of taking refuge. You can request the recording tape about refuge which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had enlightened. There is the detailed explanation in the tape. The refuge certificate is more important than your ID card and should not be placed or folded casually. Beside the way, if you die in the future, you should tell families not to put the refuge certificate into the coffin to burn.  The refuge certificate should be taken back to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. The center would handle it for you.

You should obey after taking refuge. Obey Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and your family would become more and more propitious. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recalled that at the childhood Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was taught by his father that the child should only listen but not interrupt while the elders are speaking. That is the reverence. But modern youths are not reverent at all. They would call you non-democratic if not permitting them to talk. The democracy is not to do whatever one desired. You may say that you would contradict with parents. The guru can save your life, i.e. your dharma life.

Being accompanied by the sound of reciting heart mantra of Vajrasattva, there were 57 believers taking refuges under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and filled with dharma joy.

After the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche endured the laboriousness and received 18 believers to help them alleviate worldly sufferings and bestow enlightenment of the Buddha Dharma.
