Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

June 25, 2011

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over The Grand 794th Anniversary Memorial Puja of Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgon at Taipei International Convention Center, in order to continue orthodox Buddha Dharma and propagate Drikung Kagyu tradition, as well as to bring blessings to Taiwan and to pray for world peace.

8;30 in the morning, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, guided in front by the prayer flags, jeweled parasol, musical instruments, and the eight offering girls, followed by the khenpo, ordained people from both exoteric and esoteric Buddhism, and the 3200 attendees stood quietly and reverently welcoming, Rinpoche slowly walked into the puja venue, arose on to the mandala. First, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made prostrations to the dharma photos of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, and His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang, and the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, then Rinpoche lit the butter lamp to make offering to the Buddha, and then arose up on the dharma throne. At the moment below the mandala, 300 representatives from the believers lit 300 butter lamps in sequence and made offerings to the Buddha, these 300 representatives were drawn out by themselves when entering the venue, and there were not any fees charged to lit the butter lamps.

After the attendees recited a part of the refuge prayer, aspiration prayer and other prayers, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenments “The weather were affected by the typhoon today, the wind and rain were very heavy, everybody could still undeterred by the wind and rain, attended the puja on time were not very easy, it is very good. Buddha sutras had recorded, when a Buddhism puja is held on the bad weather day in big wind and big rain, the meritorious virtues were especially big, because during these times there would be a lot of sentient beings hurt during the wind and rain, a puja held in this time would benefited these sentient beings. Therefore you could come to the puja in a windy and rainy day is very good, could benefit a lot of sentient beings. There are a few people due to the wind and rain, did not come to the Buddhism puja, it is a great pity. They thought it would not matter just missed one puja, but as for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, there was nothing more important than Buddha Dharma.”

In the condition absent of any publicities and promotions, there were still more than 3200 people attending this auspicious Buddhism puja in a rainy day, it represented that you must had learn Buddhism in previous lifes, or had made conditions with the lineage forefathers or the Drikung Kagyu lineage. And because you had attended today’s Lama Chopa puja today, it would help you in the future to find one guru with conditions to you to learn Buddha Dharma.

The lineage forefather of Drikung Kagyu lineage is Jigten Sumgon, the previous life of Jigten Sumgon is Nagarjuna, the previous life of Nagarjuna is Vimalakirti. Nagarjuna introduced tantric dharma, the theory of Madhyarnika was done by Nagarjuna, the theory of Madhyarnika were very important to Mahayana Buddhism, The Avatamsaka Sutra was also brought out by Nagarjuna when he went to the Dragon palace to besought for Buddha Dharma. The lineage forefather Jigten Sumgon’s main teaching methods were to propagate The Ratnakuta Sutra, The Ratnakuta Sutra is one part of the Great Treasure of Scriptures of Sakyamuni Buddha, The Ratnakuta Sutra is mainly about the descriptions of the changes on body, speech and mind during the process of cultivation from the first-bhumi Bodhisattva to the tenth stage of Bodhissattva. Eight hundred years ago, when the forefather of Drikung Kagyu lineage Jigten Sumgon existed, there were one hundred eighty thousand ordained people, These one hundred and eighty thousand ordained people did not came by advertisements and television publicities, it meant the forefather Jigten Sumgon had made conditions with a lot of sentient beings in past lives, possibly many had learn Buddhism following Jigten Sumgon in past lives.

There was an old saying〝The dam is a Drikung dam, the mountain is a Drikung mountain.〞If there is a dam then the place had a Drikung Kagyu monastery, it shows Drikung Kagyu lineage was very prosperous at the time. Drikung Kagyu lineage practiced mainly by retreats and solid cultivation, many of the monasteries were in very deep mountains, separated with the mundane world. Even until nowadays, there are some monasteries of Drikung Kagyu in the deep mountains, even the government does not know the places, those places were even unreachable by horses, could only be reached slowly walked on foot. Therefore in the old times, Drikung Kagyu lineage always cultivated away from the crowd, nowadays entering the crowd is for the reasons to propagate Buddhism and benefit the sentient beings, just as His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had enlightened, to repay to Drikung heritage, therefore we held the Anniversary Lord Jigten Sumgon Memorial Grand Puja in Taipei International Convention Center today.

Buddha dharma was transmitted by Buddha Sakyamuni. However we do not have the virtues to be able to see Buddha, we can only learn Buddha dharma from our guru; therefore it is very important for us to have a guru. The greatest offering and the fastest way to accumulate virtues is to make offerings and have a reverent mind to guru. The offerings are only limited to the offering in physical offerings or money offerings. It is that you can make offerings by your body, speech, and mind, just like mentioned in the sutra: We must recall Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, guru, which means that no matter our body, speech, and mind must implement the guru’s teaching in our daily life.

The vows of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are to salvage sentient being from the suffering of reincarnation. A guru who practices the Vajrayana and has attained the achievement possesses the great vows to help sentient beings being a Buddha. A Vajra guru helps sentient beings being a Buddha, the Samaya, for the guru to the disciple, which is to protect the disciples who generate their minds to learn Buddhism until them being Buddha. Therefore the gurus of Drikung Kagyu Lineage and the dharma protectors will protect the Drikung disciples who generate their minds to learn Buddhism. The Samaya, for a disciple to the guru, which is to follow guru’s teaching and diligently learn Buddhism and correct their behaviors.

If you were incautious to violate the lay people’s Five Precepts, you can make repentance to your guru to remedy it, but if you would violate the Samaya which is the disciple‘s promise to the guru, it would be hard to remedy it. Just like you heard from the video recording, the teaching of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, if you violated the Samaya between the disciple and the guru in your previous lives, you should take this opportunity to make repentance in order to remedy it.

Even if a practitioner who had been cultivated for many previous lives, he still encounters the hindrance as well. That is why we must have the guidance of guru. The guru is not refer to the worldly Master, it is that an experienced practitioner who can help you by several words when you encounter difficult during cultivation.  If you would like to learn Buddhism in order to liberate from death and birth, you are unable to achieve it without guru.  Master Lord Jigten Sumgon was born before 800 years ago, since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took refuge, he never saw Jigten Sumgon before, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s life was rescued by Master Lord Jigten Sumgon twice. That might be karmic connection for the previous life; therefore the guru would give the help the disciple in time of adversity. As long as the disciple generates his mind to learn Buddhism and aspiration for liberating from death and birth, the guru will take care the disciple generation after generation.

Today’s puja is the extraordinary Lama Chopa, you can sit here to attend the puja, the expense and manpower was hardly counted for it, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not set up the grand title of a major sponsor, nor charge the fee for the people who have the opportunity to light the light, he only expects that the Buddha dharma of Drikung Kagyu can teach sentient being in order to let sentient beings have the karmic connection to contact Buddha dharma. Therefore when you attend this puja, you should not lean on the chair, no matter what your motive is for attending this puja, you must possess the greatest reverent mind and confidence to attend the puja.

It does not mean that everyone needs to be an ordained person for learning Buddhism,  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not became an ordained person, but it would not affect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who is a lay person can learn Buddhism well and realize the correct way of learning Buddhism because the guidance of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Don’t say that waiting for me till I have time to learn Buddhism, or waiting for me till I have completed something. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a lay practitioner who is a vegetarian as well, no matter the family life or in the work, and it would not be inconvenience for his daily life after learning Buddhism. Being a lay person, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the same as you with lots of matters need to do. In 2007, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang instructed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to take retreat for three months in Lapchi Snow Mountain, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately followed the instruction, neither asking what the purpose or the benefit was, nor arranging his business in advance. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just went there according the time which was arranged by His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. On the contrary, you might say that you are busy, or waiting for me when I am available, it would be too late when you are available.

The Lama Chopa performed today is a special dharma method of Tantra in Tibetan Buddhism. It is not practiced in the Exoteric Buddhism. Why is a guru so important to practitioners? The root capacities of previous masters are much better than us, but they still needed gurus’ teaching to obtain any accomplishments. Learning Buddhism can’t be done by oneself alone. Don’t think that as long as you can read, you can understand sutras. Nor should you think that you can practice Buddhism at home by buying a Buddhist text and recite it. You shouldn’t believe that sitting at your sofa in the living room, laying your feet on coffee table, and watching Buddhist programs on TV can help you to learn Buddha Dharma. If so, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t have to perform retreats. As long as one has not attained Buddhahood, he or she needs a guru’s teaching. In order to achieve the level of breaking off the cycle of birth and death, one needs the guidance of his or her guru, especially, during the final moment of achieving Buddhahood. Without your guru’s teaching and guidance, you can’t achieve what you have learned in this lifetime.

To learn Buddhism, one must rely on an authentic guru’s teaching and guidance. A guru is not necessarily an ordained one. The meaning of “authentic” means the guru has attained the level of a Bodhisattva, who is a practitioner who can benefit sentient begins. According to sutras, the founder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, Jigten Sumgon, had obtained the position of ten Bhumis. Practitioners can also vow to be reborn in the pure land of Jigten Sumgon. In the course of Richen Dorjee Rinpoche’s practicing Buddhism, Rinpoche also has to rely on the teaching of his Three Grace Root Guru, the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. The difference is that when the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang bestowed enlightenment to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it usually only took a few sentences. Yet, it was sufficient enough for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to grasp the teaching. This is because the great reverence and faith of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche toward the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang; thus Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can walk on the correct path of cultivating Buddhism.  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gratefully said “If I didn’t have the chance to meet with the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, I won’t achieve any realization. The Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the guru, is very kind to me.”

Tibetan Buddhism particularly stresses on passing down traditions. Even in difficult times, the line of passing down Drikung Kagyu’s heritage has never been broken since the time of Jigten Sumgon who found the lineage. In other word, in any period of time, there is a Kyabgon to lead the lineage and hold the lineage’s dharma. There haven’t been any conflicts or discords for competing dharma heritage. The tradition of Drikung Kagyu is very pure and clean. For this reason, the power of the blessing from the lineage is especially auspicious and strong.

Thus, there must be of help to you because of your attending to today’s puja. The help, however, isn’t the kind of making you rich or rendering you good luck. But it is the kind that will be beneficial to you.

For one to learn Buddhism, he or she can’t be full of desires. You should not believe that listening to Buddha Dharma for a few years or attending puja once can change your luck for the better or achieve enlightenment. It’s impossible. It is full of nonsense if one claims that, after a few years of reading sutras, he or she can have a vision of Avalokitesvara or hear words of Avalokitesvara. What we can have now is the manifestation of what we did in previous lifetimes; what we have been doing now will influence our future. Learning Buddhism is a continuous process. We should cultivate Buddhism life after life. We should cultivate Buddhism life after life.

Some may feel that the teaching is not relevant or understandable to them. They’d doze off. In some sense, you have accumulated too many merits. You are able to attend a puja sitting in comfortable seats. Some even tilted and against their heads on the back of their seats, like couch potatoes deeply and softly sinking into sofas. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was regretful to choose this venue, but there wasn’t any other choice, either. This venue is air-conditioned, which is designed for concerts and other performance purposes. Usually, attendees have to pay for concerts, but you don’t have to pay a penny for today’s puja. Ironically, you’d easily fall into asleep. When you sit too comfortably, it becomes more difficult for you to learn Buddha Dharma. In Tibet, when people attend pujas, they have to sit on solid and hard ground with the sunlight directly shining on their heads.  It isn’t nothing like the condition here today, comfortably sitting down on soft seats. When your backs lie against the seats, it’s more easily to fall asleep. Even if you are in today’s puja, there is no effect at all. If you do fall asleep, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will ask you to leave. Don’t even think that because you sit afar Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche won’t be able to see you.

Although having heard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reminder of that one ought to sit straightly in a puja so as to avoid falling asleep, a pair of mother and a son at the present still leaned on the soft chair cushion and fell asleep. Seeing this, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that if they would like to sleep, they could just go to bed at home and no need to attend the puja. Therefore, two staffs at the present guided the two believers to leave immediately. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: puja participants may need to take hardship to really obtain the help of Buddha Dharma. Once you come to attend the puja presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, you could see it is just so severe. One who dozes off in a puja would have the karmic effect of falling into Animal Realm in his next life.  As you can see, many animals need 16-hour sleep per day, while human beings merely need to sleep for eight hours per day. It is because human beings have the awareness of learning. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cannot bear to see a being falling into the three evil paths, he had no choice but ask the nodding believers to leave.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: If you were told that as long as you wholeheartedly attend the puja and never fall asleep, you could gain one million dollars, I believe you could attain it because you would gain money. One falls asleep because he does not see the immediate benefit. From the beginning of learning Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never nods at a puja no matter how exhausted he is. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is grateful for the one who is willing to teach. You who doze off in a puja just do not have gratitude. You should know that it is very uneasy to hold this kind of puja that takes countless money and labor supported. You ought to harbor a humble heart and be reverent to guru. Refresh your heart and stop being in a state of mind of enjoyment to attend a puja. In Taiwan, there are too good fortunes for people to cultivate Buddhism. With too many blessed rewards, it is not easy to cultivate Buddhism or to repay karma.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started the ritual of Lama Chopa as well as bestowed the explanation of the meaning of the dharma text.

The first section of the prayer text is praying the enemies who get angry at you and the evil demons who hurt you to stop interfering with you while you are attending the puja. The negative conditions one created before would hinder him hearing Buddha Dharma. The reason why one dozes off in a puja is just that the demon of sleep come to interfere with him. When one falls asleep, one could not listen to Buddha’s teachings. As to less Buddhist word one is hindered from listening, less one’s virtuous causes grow. Hence, when attending the puja, you ought to be attentive and should not have much improper thoughts.

Then it is followed with “Refuge and Bodhichitta.”  One starts to practice virtue in his body, speech, and mind, after he takes refuge under Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and guru. According to Pure Land Buddhism, one would get rebirth in the Pure Land as long as he recites Buddha’s names and vows to get rebirth there. Amitabha Sutra, however, stated that “Those virtuous men and women, when vowing to be reborn in the Pure Land, must have the sufficient blessings, merits, causes, and conditions.” Here the so-called virtuous means observing the Five Precepts and cultivating the Ten Meritorious Acts, rather than, as you may think, donating money or taking volunteer work. If one still eats meat, his recitation of Buddha’s names would not take any effect. Don’t mistake that a Tibetan Buddhist learner would eat meat. Don’t say that you see a lama who eats meat so that you can eat, too. Nor should you issue a misconception of eating beings for salvaging them. Some people may think merely the Buddhists have to adopt vegetarian diets. However, this kind of saying is not that correct. In fact, besides Buddhism, there are still many other religions’ doctrines advocate vegetarian diet, as adopting vegetarian diet is better for the whole world. More than 800 years ago, in Tibet, the environment is unfavorable to plant and it is uneasy to adopt vegetarian diets. However, Jigten Sumgon, the founder of Drikung Kagyu, as well as many mahasiddhas of lineage still adopt vegetarian diets. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang also adopts vegetarian diets. Moreover, nowadays the environment has gotten improved and many other orders also turn to adopt vegetarian diets. Some people may say that you could slowly change yourselves. However, nowadays, so many disasters are happening in the world and the disaster just result from beings’ killing karma. If all people could adopt vegetarian diets, the numbers of disasters would decrease.

According to Maharatnakuta sutra, Maitreya Bodhisattva once asked Sakyamuni Buddha for advice on with what kind of mind arisen could a Bodhisattva get rebirth in the Pure Land of Amitabha? Thereafter Sakyamuni Buddha enlightened the ten kinds of methods of giving rise to the mind. It also illustrates that it is not necessary for one to merely get rebirth in the Pure Land of the Buddha or Bodhisattva that he has practiced on. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, for sentient beings’ sake, do not exclusively want beings to get their land. Once you make the vow to get rebirth in the Pure Land of Amitabha, every Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would assist you.

The arousal of the intention to cultivate Buddhism is very important. Today many people attend the puja with the improper mind of praying for blessing. In fact, each of you is one of the sentient beings. We ought to implore that the puja held today could bring benefit and help to sentient beings. As sentient beings get better, you would naturally get better. Some people say they would like to practice Bodhisattva’s path and would like to be reborn in the world with their aspirations for salvaging beings. In fact, it is very painstaking and uneasy for one to practice and attain the achievement of Bodhisattva’s path. If one could not attain it, it is not possible for him to be reborn in the world with their aspirations. Instead, one must require getting rebirth in the western world of Ultimate Bliss. As the great vow made by Amitabha Buddha could certainly be attained, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would provide you help on it. One ought to cultivate mercy, compassion, joyfulness, and renunciation! One ought to develop Bodhichitta. Then followed with The Seven Branch Prayer, which is always done before conducting the dharma ritual. And it moved on to making offerings toward and praising Sakyamuni Buddha. Sakyamuni is the guru who bestows Buddhist teachings and abides in the world. Afterwards, making offerings to Sakyamuni Buddha again.

Then, a ritual to bestow blessing onto the bell and the Vajra was conducted. Dharma instruments cannot be used immediately after being purchased. It takes certain rituals to make them work.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the empowerment of meditative concentration upon the attendees. An empowerment authorizes you to learn or practice means of meditative concentration and purifies your body, speech, and mind. You should sit in an upright position without leaning against the back of the chair. Otherwise, the channels in your back will be obstructed. Practicing meditative concentration has nothing to do with sitting in meditation and searching for a feeling of clarity and peace. If that were the case, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not have done the retreats. One who practices meditative concentration has to have pure body, speech, and mind, or it can be dangerous. Additionally, the guru’s guidance is a must. If you don’t practice under these conditions, problems will occur and you can get meditative sickness.

Thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees in the recitation of the heart mantra of Lord Jigten Sumgon and explained that a mantra is the concentration of the Buddha and Bodhisattva’s meritorious virtues, wisdom, and aspirations. Therefore, the Buddhist scriptures say that one should constantly contemplate on the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. “Constantly” means one should carry it out at all times and “ to contemplate” means that one’s thought should be on the meritorious virtues and aspirations of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. When one recites the heart mantra of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, he or she can then be in the sea of meritorious virtues. Thereby, the virtuous forces will grow.

Then, Khenpo Namdol led the ordained attendees and lay attendees that were selected by lot in the making of mandala offering, presenting all the valuables in the universe for the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and the guru. However, even if all the valuables have been offered to the puja, it is still difficult to repay the guru’s immense grace and kindness.

The eight girls presenting the offerings went onto the mandala to sing an offering song. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then said that the melody of this offering song did not belong to the world, nor was it composed by any human beings. It was composed by a Dakini. According to the Buddhist scriptures, singing can serve as an offering to the Buddhas. While making offering to the guru, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with pure, fresh, and clear singing, the sentient beings are also showing their gratitude.

Then, the Tsok offering was conducted. All the attendees were granted with an auspicious and rare opportunity to share food with the officiating guru, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. According to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, if you can share food with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, you will create causes and conditions for yourself to be in the Pure Land with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the future. However, it won’t help you recover health at once, have everything your own way, or solve all your problems with an immediate solution.

Thereafter, the tea offering and rice offering were conducted. According to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, this ritual is a Tibetan tradition. As it is very cold, the guru might not have enough strength during the puja. Therefore, butter tea would be offered to the guru. Some attendees took the opportunity to go to the restrooms. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued the practice and thereby asked the attendees to return to their seats. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued the teaching: Apart from those who are really sick, you who have to go to the restrooms actually have poor health.  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is in his sixties. Nevertheless, from 8 am till this moment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not go to the restroom. Your poor health or sicknesses are resulted from your own conduct. Why do you need to go to the restrooms during the interval? It is because you believers, who haven’t sought refuge, still eat meat. Many other lineages are now advising everyone to adopt a vegetarian diet. Some people would say that one can take time changing his diet. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advises everyone not to take time while learning Buddhism. Instead, one should hurry up to stop committing evil deeds and conduct virtuous deeds sooner.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees in the recitation of The Auspicious Dharma Realm Prayer. Remembering the endless grace and virtue of the guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who for once choked with sobs during the recitation, revealed his utter reverence and admiration towards the guru without any pretense. It was a very touching moment. Later on, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stepped down from the Dharma throne, standing in front of the magnificent and auspicious platforms of the eight offerings, and led a Khenpo and ordained attendees on the mandala to recite prayers and light up lamps to offer to the Buddhas.

Finally, the Mani Dedication Prayer was conducted. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees in the recitation of the Six Syllable Mantra. In the dedication prayer, all the sentient beings are covered, including some that you would never think of. By praying that these sentient beings could go to the Pure Land, you also formed a karmic connection for attaining rebirth in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and would go there someday. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then led the attendees to recite a Buddhist text. After everyone followed and completed the recitation, the benevolent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “I’ve got you. Those who recited with me will most certainly adopt a vegetarian diet and learn Buddhism someday. Those who did not will not do so, then.”

Then, all attendees recited the longevity prayers of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang, and His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, respectively. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened all participants that one cannot write his own longevity prayer simply because he has money or his disciples pray for it. One’s longevity prayer must be written by a practitioner who has a higher level of practice state than one’s own state. The long versions of the longevity prayers of the two His Holinesses just recited were written by Dalai Lama. The short versions of the longevity prayers of the two His Holinesses were written by their personal teachers when they were young. The purpose of the longevity prayer is not for praying longevity in this life, but for praying a bodhisattva to come back to benefit sentient beings continuously. If we recite it constantly, each recitation will have its own power. When the bodhisattva’s ears are filled with the sound of the longevity prayer, the bodhisattva will have to come back again to benefit sentient beings.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s longevity prayer was written by His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s imploration. A guru will not casually write a longevity prayer for a disciple. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang would not write a longevity prayer for each person who implored either. The content of a longevity prayer contains the current achievements and the bestowed prediction for the future level of attainments. The meaning of “written sincerely” in Buddhism is to bestow a prediction and claim responsibility from the person who wrote the prayer. For example, in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s longevity prayer, the last sentence prays that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can “live for a hundred kalpas”. A kalpa is a very long period of time. Is the kalpa in the prayer a big, medium, or small kalpa? Actually, regardless of which kalpa, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not ask either. The guru had written it, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would truly follow and do anything written by His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang.

Is a reincarnate Rinpoche definitely better or more powerful? In fact, all of you are reincarnate; it is just that you do not know which realm you were in your previous life. Even for a reincarnate Rinpoche, he still has to learn from scratch. For example, both of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang are reincarnate. They still had to learn everything from scratch. It is just that because they had practiced in their previous lives and had had better and virtuous capacity to learn faster, it would be easier for them to learn and faster for them to attain achievements in this life.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led all attendees to practice the Dharma of Avalokiteshvara again and enlightened all participants that the rituals conducted previously had been for benefiting other sentient beings and the dharma practiced now was for benefiting ourselves. Because everyone had made offerings and given charities previously and had accumulated blessings, it was then useful now to recite mantras for one’s own cultivation practice. Reciting the Six-syllable Mani mantra can close the doors to the Six Realms of the Cyclic Existence. Sakyamuni Buddha once said that it requires the time of a big kalpa to explain the Six-syllable Mani mantra. Nowadays, it is wrong for people to explain it in a simple way. If one can dedicate one’s life to practice the Six-syllable Mani mantra, one will not enter the Six Realms of the Cyclic Existence, provided that one has to have a vegetarian diet.

Because it is windy and rainy before today’s puja started, some people were afraid that the typhoon would turn to Taiwan. So they absented. They felt inconvenient for rainy weather. In fact, because there is the puja today, the typhoon would turn and not invade Taiwan! The attendees deeply agreed and applauded to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for conducting dharma with effort to benefit people at this land. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then enlightened: You may think that it is just the puja with thousands of people and does it have such large impact? Although you only see that there are 3,200 or more people attending the puja, the beings brought by everyone of you is countless and your ancestors in accumulated lives and beings you ate are included. They all can be benefited from today’s puja so the typhoon turned.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again appealed attendees to be vegetarians. Everyone should not say that vegetarian diet is non-nutritious or unhealthy. Modern medicine also calls upon that it is healthier to be the vegetarian. Dieting meats begets many lifestyle diseases. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took himself for example and enlightened: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to be a vegetarian and learn Buddhism at 36 years old. Now he is 65 years old and has sat for almost 4 hours from AM 8:30. He did not go to the restroom but still sits modestly to unstoppingly conduct dharma. You all have seen this. Instead, there were some young people getting up to the restroom. So-called releasing caged animals for merit in the Buddha sutras is not that one deliberately goes to the seaside, holds the ritual and buys some animals to release but still eats meats of beings after returning. It is in vain. If one does not have the mind of killing and no more eats meats, it is the “releasing caged animals for merit.”

At last, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still advised everyone with effort: if you want harmony for the family and less disasters for the nation, you should begin from yourselves and stop killing animals as well as eating meats! You accumulate own evil karma by every mouth of eaten meat. You should not learn Buddhism only when you have time. It’s too late while something goes wrong. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sobbingly reminded everyone that beings have sufferings just like us. You should not only be a vegetarian but also not harm any beings with your behavior. The puja perfectly ended after His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately enlightened. While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche descended the throne, all attendees applauded repeatedly to thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for conducting dharma and enlightened with effort, which made everyone be filled with dharma joyce.
