Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

June 26, 2011

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious regular puja, teaching the Master Guru Gampopa’s enlightenments of the three paths of a respected person at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei.

Prior to the puja, one female disciple shared the story of how His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had help her mother to relieve from the pain of illness and gave blessings to her mother.

August last year (2010), After a regular check back at the hospital, her mother said she felt dizziness, uncomfortable. The next day after work she went to check on her mother, her mother’s face was very pale, very weak laid softly in the chair. After helping her mother bathed, she saw her continued to fell backwards weakly, could not sit up properly, She felt very sad after she had seen that. The night after she went back to her home, she was sleepless, she felt her mother was very strange, but did not know the real problem.

The next day she returned to her mother’s home again, helped her mother bath again, but she found out her condition were worse, she immediately discussed with her father, then took her mother to hospital. The hospital did some basic checks, the medical staff told her that the blood drew out of her mother was transparent, it was severe anemia, the hemoglobin was only around 3 points, a blood transfusion was needed immediately, a critical condition notice was issued. At the moment, she was overwhelmed and panicked, after being reminded by the Buddhist brother, she called the Glorious Jewel Antique shop and left a message, besought the blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, then called the Buddhist brother who was an medical surgeon for help, to arrange as soon as possible to be hospitalized. Because it was sudden, she did not bring the nectar pill along with her, then later asked the Buddhist brother who lives near Taoyuan area for help.

In the emergency room, she saw the surgeon Buddhist brother came over quickly, asked the medical staff about her mother’s conditions, also sent her the nectar pills, she was very thankful to this Buddhist brother. The hospital results came out, her mother had serious gastrointestinal bleeding, the Saturday, she took her mother to besought audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and explained her mother’s conditions, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately gave blessings to her mother, and said the bleeding condition would be better next Tuesday. Back to the hospital, her mother’s hemoglobin has risen to more than 10 points, the hospital instructed her mother could start to eat, then she went home to rest first. But her younger brother and her mother then shared a meat food box, That night, her mother could not fell asleep, started to talked nonsense, it was the same until next day she came off work and to the night, she was back to hospital to check on her mother, her mother opened her eyes big and stared at the ceiling, could not fell asleep, the hemoglobin had dropped to 4 points again, needed a blood transfusion again, which made  the medical staff in chaos. Her mother’s body swelling badly with water, her mother always had those illness of diabetes, hypertension and Parkinson’s disease. Unable to urinate therefore her body swollen like a water balloon.

To appease her mother, she asked her mother to close her eyes and rest well, do not looked at the ceiling anymore, then her mother fell asleep, when the medical staff checked on her mother, used a flashlight to check on her pupil, then kept calling her mother’s name, then called a group of medical staffs, then prepared some equipments to provide oxygen in to the room, she saw that and felt very sad and walked out from the door, and besought in the heart to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help her mother, her younger sister was very nervous and kept calling her mother. Very auspiciously, her mother awaked and told her and her sister〝I was so frightened, someone wanted to pull me down! 〞She thought in mind, if it was not the blessings gave by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she would not know what to do. Later, the resident doctor came and understood her mother’s situations, told them her mother needed venous catheter, also needed to be in intensive care unit, the risk was very high, it could hurt injury the lung and cause pneumothorax. Then could only arranged her mother into intensive care unit, she saw her mother had many tubes inserted into her body, she was very sad. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had enlightened about three tubes inserted together on a person, she saw it on her mother. She was very helpless and anxious, could only besought Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help her mother relief from the torture of the illness.

The next day, her mother’s hemoglobin increased, also urinated normally, she and her sister besought audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and expressed their gratitude. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her sister, do not let her mother eat any meat, do not wait until bad things came up then beseech from Bodhisattvas. A month later, her mother’s bleeding bowel did not improve, and  could not find the problem. The Buddhist brother surgeon said the checks were all done, the large and small intestine were difficult to check, did not suggest her mother to do, her mother could not stand it.

On Saturday, she excused from hospital, and took her mother to besought audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her mother, you are much better, and told her, is there any other thing?  She reported, mother’s bleeding bowel did not improve. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then compassionately and mercifully gave her mother blessings and said, it would be better before next Thursday, then later her mother recovered very quickly. If it was not the continued blessings from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she really had no abilities and was powerless to do anything for her mother.

On November, her mother went to emergency because of dizziness and uncomfortable, the medical staff did CT scans, her mother vomited a large amount in the emergency room, the diagnosis was a hemorrhage of cerebellar, which is stroke, there was a distance between the area of hemorrhage and the brain stem, if the bleeding area continued to spread, it may be oppressive to the brain stem, the person would fall into a coma, must have surgery immediately and stay in intensive care unit, she told the situation to a Buddhist brother surgeon, at the same time another Buddhist brother delivered an nectar pill, she was grateful to the Buddhist brothers.

The next day she visited her mother, her mother’s condition did not deteriorate, the area of oppression did not need a surgery. She was very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who gave blessings and helped her mother through the difficult situations.

After discharged from hospital, on Saturday, she pushed her mother’s wheel chair to besought the audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and express their gratitude. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her mother, you are much better, it would be alright, and told her, is there any other thing? She reported, her mother was very dizzy when standing up, the place of bleeding needed to be slowly absorbed by her own body and improve slowly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately and mercifully gave her mother blessings, so her mother could recover very well, she was very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassion and mercy.

March this year (2011), one Saturday morning, she received a news that her father was hospitalized due to car accident, she rushed to the hospital to visit her father, she saw her father laid on the bed painfully, she asked her father where and what car had hit him, and who sent him to the hospital, her father had no idea. The test results came out, her father only had scapula lacerations, hand and body cuts, it were not very big matter and did not have to stay in the hospital. She know her father could be like that all had to do with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, therefore she sent her father home and immediately hurried to Taipei to expressed her gratitude and besought audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Later the police checked the street monitor of the date of the accident, and found out her father was hit by a big truck, if it was not the blessing by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her father’s injury from the car accident must be more than that.

Late April , her mother’s lower body were painful, could not stand up for toilet, had to rely on the aid support to slowly move, to the next day she was very painful to stand up even with the aid support, then she excused from work to took care of her mother at home. The beginning few days, her mother’s condition did improve, but it did not last long, one day her mother said she is very painful, her mother was sent to the hospital for painkiller injections but it could not stop the pain, the pain was eased after continued two doses of injections, after the examination, the cause was thoracic fractures, disc prominent, and the surgery was very risky.

On Saturday, she took her father and younger sister to besought audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, after reported the situations of her mother’s conditions, at the same time her father also expressed his gratitude in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche understood her father’s car accident and her mother’s conditions, she was instructed to make full prostrations.

The later days, her mother’s pain got more severe, also her mother was paralyzed from her lower body, could not control her bowel and urinate, unable to walk, the belly got bigger each day, could not eat, she felt very unforgiving and sad, but was powerless to react, she could only besought in front of the guru’s dharma photo, besought for the guru’s blessings, to ease some suffering from her mother, hope her mother could passed away peacefully and calmly, did not have to suffer more from the medical treatments. She had no abilities to do anything, could not alleviate her mother’s sufferings, could not do anything as replacement for her mother.

The two days before her mother passed away, she put Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma photo where her mother could see, and asked if her mother could remember Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s name and looks? Her mother replied, Rinpoche is a handsome guy.

Before her mother was passed away, her consciousness was very clear, she was not aware that it would be suffering before dying. On the day of her mother’s last day, as usual, she massaged her mother. Her mother would like to rise in order to sit on the bed. During that time, there was only her, she could not help her mother to do that, therefore she told her mother after her father went home, her father could help her mother. After noon, she went to look about her mother. She found that her mother was sweating; she immediately took a towel to wipe off her sweat. When she with her father to hold her mother and asking her whether she was ok or not, her mother was not talking anymore. She suddenly found that her mother’s lips were turning pale and her breath was slow down. She hurried to ask her father called 911 for help. When the ambulance was coming, her mother had no breath at all.  The ambulance men told her that her mother had no the pulsation, should they make the first aid or not? She and her father replied that just let her go. She immediately made the phone call to Glorious Jewel Antique Company and requested the dharma brother to relay the information to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for her mother’s death. She also wished that she could beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to perform the Phowa for her mother. The dharma brother asked that, whether she beseeched Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for her mother before?  She replied that she did not aware her mother would be died so quickly, therefore she did not beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before.  The dharma brother proceeded to talk to her; didn’t she hear that there were so many dharma brothers shared their stories before the puja? Afterward the dharma brother still told her, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would call back, her request will be reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After she finished the telephone conversation, she put a nectar pill in her mother’s mouth, and recited the mantra for her mother, meanwhile, she pray to the dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for blessing.

She was grateful for the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Her mother’s funeral ceremony was so smoothly, the cremains of her mother was white with a light purple and green, as well as there was a neat hole on the top of the skull — an auspicious sign that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had liberated her mother. There was no any dispute or obstacle for the whole funeral arrangements, it was consummate for it, and she would like to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again.

Finally she expressed that if there was no Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her life would be in black and white. She would have no target, without direction, still looking for the way of liberating from the death and birth. She again thanks Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to teach Gampopa’s teaching for the essential of cultivating Buddhism. Before this puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught that you must firmly believe the law of cause and effect. There is no comparison which is the most unfortunate person or the poorest person in the world. Those things which were happened to you must be relative to your previous lives and the current life, those things are done by yourself, and you have to suffer from your own actions and there is completely no reason to blame others. You had done lots of karma by your previous lives, which was the reason for your reincarnation. You must correct those behaviors which would be possible to let you fall into reincarnation. No matter doing good or evil deeds, there will be the karma power generated. No matter the karma are good or evil, it would cause you reincarnation. As regards the human being, it must be the evil karma greater than the good karma, if you would accumulate lots of good karma, you would come here anymore. Being a human being, you must have accumulated lots of evil karma for your previous lives. Do not think that you can do it because of the tiny evil deed, or you would not be willing to do it because of the tiny good deed. As well as you should not be passive because you are afraid of doing karma.

Don’t say that you have heavy hindrance of karma which could not do anything. It is merely your excuse. Those people who have this point of view do not believe the cause and effect and not willing to correct themselves. Being a Buddhist, you should not have the mind to give it up. If your karma were not heavy enough, how could you appear in the world? People with heavy good karma, most of them are unable to learn Buddhism. On the contrary, people with heavy evil karma have suffering, they can easily learn Buddhism. Many years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very rich before taking refuge under His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang; On the contrary, either you were sick or had the troubles in the business, or family, or the lawsuit. It means that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has heavy karma hindrance, and His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang possesses the greater virtues to have one disciple-Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is enough.

You are confined by the information explosion; there are six out of ten people, who would check the SMS from their mobile phone when they wake up, four people of them would check their computers to look for whether there is any message left in your blog. Do you think that you are so important? In fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also had the mobile phone, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only turn on his phone when he would like to call someone, most of time, the phone is turning off. Some people would rely on the computer, furthermore, they cannot remember something, need to check from the computer. How could they be for those people who did not have the computer before? Was the memory of a human being so worst? Since human beings invented the computer, everyone seems to be like to have the anterograde amnesia. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not necessary to use E-mail; His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang knows how to use the internet to search for information, that is why His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s guru. It is not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not able to use computer, it is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has lots of complicated things need to handle for daily life.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not criticizing the defect of science. It is that the people are lazy in the degenerate age. It causes lots of problems by using the tools of science. In the Chinese history, there were people invented the papermaking, gunpowder, printing in the North Song Dynasty, but the people were not willing to use it after South Song Dynasty, it was that because the ancient people possessed the wisdom, knowing the fact that it would be full of hazards even if the science was so convenient. Currently the internet network is prospering, many people hide themselves behind the computer and pour out all their wishes to say and indulge their desire.  Even if they have nothing to do, they would like to play computer game. There was a disciple of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dared to look for friends and get married through internet. It is just like the old way that people writing letters make friend through the “pen pal”, finally it would have no good result and it won’t work.

Why did you do these things? It was because that you were indulging your mind, you did not look clearly the depths of your heart which is looking forward to having the desire in pursuing the satisfaction, and you wish someone could offer you something whole day. If you were so, even if you are learning Buddhism, there is no difference for your attitude which is the same as non-Buddhist path. Learning Buddhism is not like a psychology doctor to satisfy your desire. If you are looking forward to asking Buddhas and Bodhisattvas give you something whole day, it is just like the Buddhist path to look for the blessing. The believers of non-Buddhist path always beseech the Lord as long as there is something happened. Even if they made the mistake, as long as they can pray for forgiveness, and ask the Lord giving them a new life, everything they rely on the Lord. A male disciple who was three generations of believing Catholicism to confirm with that, a believer of Catholicism always pray for the Lord for everything, continually ask for the Lord. It is not that we would like to criticize the defect of non-Buddhist path; it is that the non-Buddhist path is to outward ask for, but they cannot able to ask themselves. As regards Buddha taught us, we have to do it by ourselves, we must review our mind or attitude to find out the problems, and then we can achieve it by ourselves. If we could do everything only relying on praying, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not necessary to take retreat and did lots of things, he could call His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang every day in order to have the blessings.

Some people think that there is no difference between Buddhism and other religion which is to advise people to do good deeds. However doing good deeds is an essential thing which should be done by human beings.  Buddhism is referring to the way of liberating from the death and birth. From the beginning of teaching in Buddhism, is also to tell people to do good deeds, but in the end of teaching in Buddhism, there would be big discrepancy with other religion. Buddhism teaches you to do good deeds in order to accumulate the virtues. So as to your mind will be stable and then you can listen to and accept Buddha dharma. Therefore your mind will not be affected by the evil karma when the karma retribution is appearing.

Buddhism tells us the ways which can let us follow Buddha’s teaching and walk to the way to be reborn in the Pure Land. That is so-called a dharma method toward to the way of liberation. We, as the human being, will achieve the method which Buddha taught us before.  If you could not do it, it was because that you still not make up your mind, or you don’t believe that you can do it, it would be referring to the scope of delusion. Then the virtues of attending the puja will be unable to transfer into merit and help you to liberate from death and birth by this life. You can only accumulate those virtues for your next lives; you might become a pet for your next life. It had mentioned in the sutra regarding to be an animal or in the Animal Realm. Don’t think that when you reciting the mantra or reading the sutra, a dog quietly staying under your feet to listen to you, and then this dog will be reborn in the Pure Land when it is died. It would be impossible! Unless the dog which is transformed by a dharma protector or Dakini in order to protect you by the form of animal. But it is only happened for a real practitioner, they will not protect you if you are not the practitioner.

Master Gampopa taught that those so-called “knowledgeable,” “noble,” or “virtuous” practitioners are no more than a mundane representation of the “eight dharmas,” if deep down they simply have striven for happiness and benefits of this lifetime. In actuality, they are just masters of this mundane world.

Whether you like it or not, every individual has endowed with eight kinds of wishes: We wish to get rid of sorrow, losing, being slandered, and being ridiculed. We also wish to enjoy happiness, gains, fame, and admiration. These are mundane eight dharmas and they are also called “eight winds.” While cultivating Buddhism, we ought to be clearly and deeply aware of whether our deeds are related to the eight winds. Even if some practitioners seemingly carry out Buddhist matters but which matters are associated with eight winds, those matters are not truly related to Buddhism. They are simply things with an outer symbol relevant to Buddhism. It is not that those non-Buddhist matters are with negative nature. What those people said and did, however, is not pertaining to breaking off the cycle of birth and death. That why they are simply non-Buddhists but with a symbol of Buddhism attached to them. Many masters claimed that they have performed pujas and bestowed empowerment. They, nonetheless, was thinking when the cash would arrived. If the money has not come in, they’d think whether they should talk less. These attitudes are full of eight winds.

No matter how acclaimed your characters are, how knowledgeable you may be, how much meritorious deeds you have conducted or how well you can deliver Buddha Dharma (be a master or a Rinpoche), if your mindsets are always full of eight winds, you can’t be counted as a Buddhist practitioners. A reincarnated Rinpoche liked to make wildly known about his great achievements occurred in his previous lifetimes. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche heard of his stories, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said to the Rinpoche “ if someone were as mischievous as I am and he has read what you wrote about your previous great capabilities, he might want you to show him your great capabilities at site.” The capabilities a practitioner had in previous lifetimes are not relevant to the practices of this lifetime. He or she has to learn from scratch. The only difference is that he or she will learn much faster due to the previous practices. If, however, the practitioner can’t stand any luring of this life, his or her practices will not come to any effect. The Rinpoche who has written about the great capabilities was to help fundraising for temples. In the end, his deeds are related to the categories of eight winds.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been highly aware of not to get involved with anything related to categories of eight winds. That’s why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t like to be interviewed by media. As soon as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche attains any fame, his merits will reduce a bit. For instance, the yearly great puja performed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been attended by more than ten thousand people. The number of attendees has been increased year after year. Some disciples once sought advices from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche whether they should actively send the news to the media. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche responded that Rinpoche will follow but not seek conditions. If some journalists wish to report the event, let them do it. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not initiate anything with regard to publicity. Since taking refuge under the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has undertaken a great many projects for the lineage. But in earlier time, the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang never publicly or privately praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. For the one thing, the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was carful not to waste this disciple’s merits. As soon as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was praised, his merits would be used a little. The second reason is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been given opportunities to serve the lineage, which can accumulate merits and provisions. Why should Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still get to be praised?

The Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center is a pure and clean center. It never raises fund by providing the service of lighting up the Illuminating Lamps, unlike other temples which would call up their believers to light up the Illuminating lamps in the end of a year. Pujas performed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never establish any grand titles for major sponsors; there are no grand titles in the past, not now or in the future. The expenses for the grand pujas are contributed by disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. If disciples can’t afford to sponsor the pujas, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would rather not hold the pujas at all. It is not necessary to search for external contributors to hold pujas and therefore there is no need to establish grand titles for them. More importantly, those who donate more money have not necessarily attained more merits. If someone is publicly praised because of donating money, the little merits resulting from donation will be exhausted because of the praise.

The nature of Buddha Dharma is about your “hearts.” The meaning of the “hearts” here doesn’t refer to hearts of love. Rather, it is specifically important to mean hearts of making vows. A story recorded in sutras is relevant here. A king had sponsored a puja that was performed by Buddha Sakyamuni. At the end of the puja, a disciple sought Buddha Sakyamuni’s opinion about whose merits were the greatest by attending this puja. Buddha Sakyamuni pointed to an old women positioned afar and said “this person has obtained the greatest merits.” The disciple was confused. Why not the king’s merits were the greatest? After all, he was the one who spent all the money. Buddha Sakyamuni explained that it was because the old woman had greatly admired the king for his holding the puja that rejoiced many attendees. So the merits of admiring others’ virtuous deeds would be the greatest. Why do sutras record this story? It is to remind master practitioners that it’s wrong to flatter believers for the purpose of fame, wealth, benefit, and gain. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has paid special attention to the content of sutras. There must be some reasons that such stories would be written by Buddha Sakyamuni. Over the past years, pujas perform by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were all perfectly completed and could benefit numerous sentient beings. Additionally, there are more and more attendees take part in the pujas. All these facts indicate that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and dharma protectors have been blessed the pujas and bestowed protections.

Before the puja, a female disciple shared that her mother admired the handsomeness of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. This admiration didn’t make Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche happy, but Rinpoche knew that he has to improve his Buddhist practice and cultivation. In sutras, it is described that the appearances Buddhas are dignified and noble. There are thirty-two indications in Buddhas’ appearances. Either men or women, the looks are actually manifestations of your karmic retribution accumulated in past lifetimes. Genuine practitioners, however, can change their appearances because one’s appearance reflects his or her mind. Some women who already passed the age of fifty would feel flattered because of people’s praise of their looks. They’d spend a great deal of time and money in putting up make up and buying dresses. You should stop and think why people would praise your looks? What are their purposes? If you have done something because of the praises, it means you have been influenced by the eight winds. Consequently, your money would also be gone. Some man is nearly of sixty years of age, but he’d still feel very happy when hearing a young woman admire his nice look or even say she likes him. He’d become fastidious in his dress and hair style. Actually, as long as this man can be steadfast and not be influenced by the eight winds, he will realize that that woman actually wants his money. If he is a poor guy, she will not admire and like him. If he doesn’t believe so, he can just tell her that he has run out of money and test whether she would still care for him. If the woman is very good at this kind of mind game, she might temporarily care for him. But if he goes to her and asks to borrow one million dollars the next day, she’d disappear right away without lending him any money. For women, it is the same. You shouldn’t care too much about others’ admiration of your beautiful looks. As soon as you are praised, the merits for your beautiful looks are used up. It means you’ll be over the hill very soon. It is not that you do not take care of your looks, but that you don’t have to assiduously spend time and money in maintaining beautiful appearances. Many people would undergo plastic surgeries. Even if their looks become younger, but can their cells also undergo plastic surgeries? No! It won’t work and their cells will remain the same.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that a female disciple has been seeing a man who will not treat her nicely. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already advised her end the relationship, but she insisted to keep it. She felt that man has been very nice to her. If you ask whether your guru or girlfriend (boyfriend) is more important, you must respond that your girlfriend is more important. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught that the Three Jewels are the most important. This female disciple thinks that if she breaks up with her boyfriend, she has broken her promises. But if she keeps seeing this man, some conflicts must arise sooner or later. When she wants to keep her promises, she should ask whether her boyfriend also keeps his. Whether she has considered her promises to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the Guru? If she continues to keep the relationship, she has planted the cause of being betrayed by others. She is still influenced by the eight winds, feeling that she can’t lose and let go. Actually, deep down she knows the best why she wants to keep seeing the man.  Sometimes, it is only for proving she is right. She just can’t let go and think things will continue as usual. She didn’t keep in mind Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s previous teachings about death and impermanence. Even if she doesn’t want to let go now, that man will eventually die, which means they will be parted in the end. She just feels she can give up the relationship. Strangely, without knowing their future, it must take her a great deal of courage to make up her mind to get together with that man. She willingly and daringly decided to go for it anyway. But now she’d claim she couldn’t possibly let go. What this explains is you all have gamblers’ characters.

Nowadays, people pay attention to love and take love, including the love between men and women, women and women, and, men and men, as a great thing. Sometimes the meaning and reason could be seen via the formation of Chinese character. And in fact, love (“情”in Chinese) is formed by two characters: ‘Heart’ and ‘black’, and by which it refers to the black heart. To love is actually to occupy the other and require the other to satisfy what the one wants. According to the Sutra of the Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, one who focuses on love and lust will fall into Hell Realm.  Love and lust are two things. The former one is saying about one’s seeking for the greedy thought in his mind, while the latter one about one’s physical lust. One who is clinging to love and lust would give rise to many greediness and hatred. When you get into relationship with the other, you must want the other to satisfy some greedy thoughts in your mind. It is certain for two people who get into relationship with each other to mutually satisfy each other’s needs. The needs, however, would change. When one’s needs could not be satisfied, hatred would arise in him. Greediness and hatred would lead you to plant the cause of falling into hells.  One’s Buddhist cultivation could let him clearly see the other with a pure heart. Many people may believe that kind of saying such as “I love you forever.” And therefore, getting divorced or breaking up would be very painful for them. It is because they don’t want to lose, by which is also within the field of the Eight Winds.

Some couples walk hand in hand in the street. Seeing this, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would think that it is so hot, 35 degrees Celsius, but how could they walk hand in hand? The two hands must be clammy. Isn’t it suffering for them as they don’t know they should be hand-in-hand or not? Before, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was young, he also did the thing. If the other did not let him to hold her hand, he would get angry and thought the other did not love him. However, after starting to learn and practice Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would know this kind of behavior is resulted from that they focus on love and lust. Due to one’s mind changes, one would have different point of view on a same thing. Hence, Sakyamuni Buddha has enlightened that what is seen by people as a right thing is not necessarily right; what is seen by people as wrong thing is not necessarily wrong.

Cultivating dharma is so beneficial that let you look over many things clearly. Why are you deceived? It is because you are moved by the Eight Worldly Winds. The dharma teachings that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave these years are all to help you handle with the Eight Worldly Winds. If you act in accordance with the teachings and furthermore abstain from Eight Worldly Winds, you will not meet those people will harm you because you can know what kind of people they are without mistakes. You do not listen to the advice to break with your boy friend but find excuse that your karma is heavy and you owed him in previous lifetime etc. These are awful excuses. You don’t look inside into yourself but seeking for things in the outer. You even said you didn’t know how to do and had no choice. All what you said is just you tried to evade from the reality.

Prior to the beginning of puja, the female follower shared with the present the story of how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped her. In her description, she talked a lot of details to depict the part of the familial love, such as saying that her mother died in her arms. It shows that she meant to talk about her filial obedience to her mother. The long story she talked just test the present’s patience. Even Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, in the lounge room, wanted to go out to stop her. She expressed many times her gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for blessing her mother. Hearing this, you may think she was really a filial child. But hearing her much talking, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche merely heard that many times she took her mother before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and prayed for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing, she always thought her mother would live on as she heard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that her mother would get better. As a true Buddhist practitioner, he knows the female follower just marred the practitioner.

In fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is always nice to the elder. When the elder comes to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would talk comforting words to them so as release the elder’s feeling of suffering from their disease. In the course of the female follower’s telling, she did not say that she would like to make repentance on behalf of her mother. It shows that she did not at all accept death and impermanence, what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has enlightened in previous pujas. She did not have any concept of Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped her mother again and with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help, her mother’s hemoglobin got increased. However, seeing her mother’s conditions, the female follower did not immediately make repentance on behalf of her mother. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her to do full prostrations, she merely wanted to make use of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to let her mother recover. She did not have repentant heart at all. One should make repentance on behalf of parents as one most knows what his parents have done. Don’t think your parents are good people who never do wrong. Parents are good and merely good to you as they give birth to you.  However, except for very few people who have been a vegetarian beginning from mother’s uterus, many people since their childhood have been raised by parents, and parents just have killed a lot of for their children to eat. You all have eaten and seen, so you should not say you don’t know. At New Year’s Eve family dinner, mother cooks and carves meat in the kitchen for hours. You just happily eat them all within one hour. However, the karma of killing is just created. One ought to make repentance on these all!

Besides, she mentioned that dharma brothers gave her the nectar pills. In fact, the nectar pills, rather than being eaten at one’s will, are for the dying people to eat so as to avoid them falling into the three evil paths. You just take it for granted to obtain the nectar pills, and think you should get it after you place a phone call. In fact, whether or not one has the nectar pill to eat, one still has longevity will live on. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is just so nice to you, and you should cherish it. Once, in Tibet, when the lama gave a follower of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s some nectar pills, there was a Tibetan aside seeing this. The Tibetan reached out his hands to ask for the nectar pill. The lama right away beat the Tibetan’s hands and did not give him the nectar pill. But why the lama gave the nectar pills to the follower. It is just because the follower’s guru is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has done many things for Drikung Kagyu Order. Without Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, how could you get the nectar pills!

This female follower’s mind is improper, she does not believe impermanence, and does not take Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice on that one ought to deeply believe in the law of cause and effect. Besides, you also heard that she said she did not think her mother would leave so soon. In fact, if one’s mother is healthy, one could wish mother has longevity. But if one’s mother is not in healthy conditions, that one prays for mother’s longevity is just let her suffer more. Moreover, the follower’s mother had suffered from the pains of disease for many years! In the Buddhist Sutra, there is a story depicted: Once, a mother cried and implored the Buddha Sakyamuni for letting her departed son revive.  The Buddha required her to ask her neighbors if nobody ever died in their family. If she could find a family wherein nobody ever left, then the Buddha would let her son revive. Since death is the must process, we should let ourselves give rise to the concept all around of death and impermanence. You may think you won’t die so soon. However, those people surround Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often hear Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche says that he may die at any time.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother is already at the age of more than eighty and has many pains of diseases. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche merely besought His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang for one time to bless his mother for creating the cause and conditions for her mother to cultivate Buddhism. Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not ask again His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to bless his mother, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that it depends on him himself to help his mother. Unlike you who are usually absent and merely come to implore for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help when you meet difficulties. One who does not make repentance on behalf of his parents but unceasingly wastes his guru’s energy just makes use of guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to satisfy his greedy desires. This kind of greedy people just looks like a Buddhist learner but in fact they do not correct themselves at all. They are still in the field of the Eight Winds. The female follower who does not want to lose her mother just shows that her mind of gain and loss does not change. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche therefore said that the female follower could not learn Tantra.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then laughingly said that in the future there may be fewer people who dare to share their story on the front stage. In fact you don’t have to worry. You merely have to cultivate Buddhism in accordance with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings and make repentance on the parts you haven’t reached.

Usually we would describe a person “sensitive” and it is just the one firmly holds the Eight Winds in his hands and does not let it go. Only when you leave the Eight Winds could the recitation and prostration you do accumulate your virtues. And one also needs virtues to cultivate Buddhism. Why you cannot get correspondence with guru? It is because you have not acted in accord with the teachings. You have not acted according to what guru has told you. If one does not truly apply Buddhism into his every life all the time, one’s recitation of mantras and sutras, attending repentance rituals, or even his retreat practice, would not generate merits to change his karma of past lives. Those he has done would at most bring about the virtues of human and gods for him to use in his next life rather than this life. In Chinese history, the Emperor Wu of Liang did a lot of Buddhist activities. Bodhidharma, however, said that Emperor Wu of Liang merely generated the virtues rather than merits. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would like to ask you to introspect on your daily body, speech, and mind, with the Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices prior to your sleep every night. As people are very busy in modern society, you don’t have a long time to perform a solitary retreat practice for months. Thereafter, you ought to take action in your every day life and reflect on your each mind and thoughts arisen. The thoughts for one’s own sake are evil thoughts. Once one perceives it, he ought to repent right away and never commits again. This is what the true practice is. When one finds that he does not attain the doctrines of the Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices, one would just have wasted the time of that day, and one less day for him to cultivate Buddhism.

If one does not leave the Eight Winds, one would not be able to develop the indiscriminating mercy and compassion. One would not be able to help sentient beings with the Buddha Dharma he has learned. Even if the one is an ordained person, what he practices would also be in vain.  One who feels all the time other people direct against him such as by placing an object on not that wrong place does not depart from the field of Eights Winds either. A practitioner of the Bodhisattva’s path cultivates mercy, compassion, and Bodhichitta. The one would even, holding a knife in her hand, get angry at her roommate just because her roommate put an object askew. Fortunately as other ordained people knew that she would not really want to kill people, they did not contract enmity with her. If it were other people, they might have called the police. With this kind of mind, how could the one practice Buddhism on the Bodhisattva path? As she got angry at her roommate, the elder, merely because her roommate did not do the thing well, she did not respect the elder at all. As an ancient saying goes that one ought to honor the aged and the wise. Would the one who does not respect the aged respect other people? Wouldn’t the one gets elder? There are only two situations for her to not get elder. One is to attain the achievement of immortality, one of the Drikung Kagyu Tantras. The other one is to live a short life and dies before getting old. Under the two conditions one would not get old. Those people who don’t respect the aged have no regard for superiors.

This time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche decided to fully refund the sold rice dumplings in his company because the staff in charge did not conduct strict quality control for the consumers. She could have sent her subordinate to inspect the rice dumpling manufacturer and see whether the workers making the rice dumplings wore gloves and a mask. However, she failed to do so. Why? It is because she did not respect others at other times. One who respects others would have thought of controlling the quality so as to provide safe merchandise for the consumers.

A female disciple was sick and employed a foreign maid to take care of her. However, she was very impolite to the maid, asking her to run lots of errands. She thought that she could do anything she wanted as long as she was the employer. She even complained to the maid. Her demeanor showed that she had no respect for others.

The great Gampopa said, “As they carry out non-Dharma conduct in the disguise of Dharma-like matters, what they do is nothing but representation of evil religion that lacks conscience.”

The Great Gampopa scolded such people. As they carry out non-Dharma conduct in the disguise of Dharma-like matters, what they do is nothing but representation of evil religion that lacks conscience. As they have been deceived by afflictions and karma that form the suffering world, their conduct would be the so-called fruition of falling back to the reincarnation.  If that is the case, they will not have Dharma that leads to the Buddhahood.

The so-called lack of conscience refers to the evil and dark karma that they commit. Evil teachings do not ask you to conduct wrongdoings. Instead, you will be prevented from leaving the reincarnation. Devils are not what you think. Devils do not look scary as described in other religions, have wars with you all the time, or ask you to commit evildoings. That is not the case. Devils would not ask you to commit wrongdoings, but would ask you to conduct virtuous deeds. If one who doesn’t have enough fortune or virtuous karma, he will not become a devil. However, the difference between the Buddhas and the devils is that devils do not want you to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Instead, they want you to be reincarnated. As for the Buddhas, the Buddhas teach you the means to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Devils fell into the Devil Realm because they do not believe that there are ways to leave the reincarnation. They do not consider that the reincarnation is painful. They think that they should come back next time, so they conduct virtuous deeds.

Nowadays, some people conduct fortune telling on TV, and then introduce their clients to a certain Rinpoche to change their fate. They have to pay the Rinpoche in order to receive blessings from him. This is not Buddhist teachings but business activities. In the ancient times, fortune tellers had a very low social status. They chose to do fortune telling only when they couldn’t continue to work in other walks of life. The ancients said that fortune tellers will eventually become either poor, spouseless, or handicapped.  Fortune tellers would most certainly be in one of the conditions and some even met all three. Therefore, one would be a fortune teller only when he or she had no other options. Modern people, however, openly declare themselves as fortune tellers and even show their wealth off by living in a mansion and driving a luxury car. No one has ever been seen to make his fate better by means of fortune telling. Do not waste time making the arrangement any more.

The great Gampopa said, “If one can completely and thoroughly generates loving kindness, compassion, and Bodhichitta, no matter what he does, he will intend to carry out everything for the benefit of the sentient beings. Then, the practice means by which we cultivate will lead to the path to Buddhahood. To carry out the practice means refers to the fact that one can help the sentient beings to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Therefore, if you are unable to liberate yourself from the cycle of birth and death, how can you benefit the sentient beings? Before you have the capability to do it, you should have the aspirations to cultivate your loving kindness, compassion, and Bodhichitta first.

No matter what you do, if you can consider the sentient beings as mother-like benefactors, you will definitely generate loving kindness, compassion, and Bodhichitta towards every single sentient being. Thereby, you will intend to carry out everything for the benefit of the sentient beings. Then, the practice means will lead to the path, the path to practice and Buddhahood!

Every sentient being has been reincarnated in the world for myriads of lives. One must have a pair of parents in each reincarnated life. If you have been reincarnated for 10,000 times, you will have 10,000 pairs of parents. All the parents in your past lives were sentient beings that had karmic connection with you. Maybe there is 10 % chance that you will meet with them this life. They could again become your parents, your brothers and sisters, your husband, or children by your side. Sentient beings that you have karmic connection with must have conduct virtuous or evil karma with you, i.e. shared karma. No matter what you had created in the past lives, virtuous or evil karma, you will need to repay all that in this life. Therefore, if you are able to contemplate that every sentient being is a parent from your past lives, you can then respect every one of them and generate loving kindness, compassion, and Bodhichitta towards them. By repaying all the mutual debts, you can then move on to liberation from the cycle of birth and death and step towards the path to the Buddhahood.

Whether you have got any family members has nothing to do with the Buddhist teachings. It is only your karmic connection. In the Maharatnakuta Sutra, you cannot refuse the karmic connection between your family member and you in this life. Your relatives are all your karmic creditors. The reason why you were born into the same family lies in that you have conducted certain virtuous and evil deeds together in your past lives. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw his second son for the first time, Richen Dorjee Rinpoche found himself smiling to the new-born. At that moment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that he would be in big trouble, for he would most certainly go through hard time for the child. We celebrate for any new member in the family because it is a tradition in the Chinese culture. In fact, when a new-born comes to the family, we should know that he or she has come to form a karmic connection. As to how long the connection will last, no one actually knows. Therefore, there is no need to be overjoyed.

The Great Gampopa continued his teachings: If that is not the case, one who practices for his own self-benefit will only go on the path of enlightenment attained through hearing and conditions.

In the age of degenerate Dharma, it is impossible for the sentient beings, who try to attain enlightenment through hearing and conditions, to eliminate all their afflictions. Even the ordained population would not measure up. The aforementioned ordained disciple didn’t listen to the guru’s teachings. She did not practice the Bodhisattva path, nor could she attain enlightenment through hearing and conditions. Although she became a nun in this life and sought refuge with a guru to learn Buddhism, she did not carry out the guru’s instructions. You don’t want to practice this, and fail to accomplish another practice. What on earth are you practicing?

Nowadays, ordained people have to go outside to hang out with their believers in order to have more followers. In so doing, they can become more powerful in the monastery.  If they do not have anyone with them, they will be sent to do cleaning or work in the kitchen. Some would even be asked not to be in the main temple. That is why the ordained people would want to have more believers. Such a situation occurs in both Exoteric and Tibetan Buddhism as we speak. This is a very bad situation. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advises the ordained people not to have the intension to gather more believers. Nor should they accept random offerings, for they will have to pay everything back. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once saw late Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche, an accomplished practitioner, even refuse khatas a few years before his passing, nor would he accept any offerings. Because you are not Buddhist, Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche did not want to owe you. Nevertheless, Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche accepted Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s offering. Once in India, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s library was to be inaugurated. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and late Drubwang Rinpoche sat in the plaza before the main temple waiting for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. A Taiwanese believer was on his knees, holding a khata, right in front of Drubwang Rinpoche. Even though he knelt there for a long time, Drubwang Rinpoche still did not accept his khata. Later, the man felt very embarrassed that hung the khata onto his neck by himself. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also saw Drubwang Rinpoche cast money back to the person who offered it. The late Yunga Rinpoche, another accomplished practitioner in the lineage, practiced a long-term retreat and wouldn’t even receive believers, for he did not want to owe anything. You will see that, if the person does not truly want to learn Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not accept his offerings. Unless you have sought refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not be able to repay you. Even your offering is accepted, you will be granted with Buddhist teachings, a reward that is way greater than what you offered.

Some people would accept gifts from others while working for a magazine publisher, taking it for granted. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does business as well. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never accepts gifts and has thereby avoided a lot of problems.

In the Buddhist scriptures, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna showed how to repay all the karma accumulated in the past. Telling the ones who came to take his life, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna said that he had met almost all the karmic debts created in his previous lives. Only one was left. In one lifetime, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna had decapitated an ant with a leaf and had not repaid the karma. Therefore, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna told his foes to decapitate him with a grass and thereby repaid all his karma. Thereafter, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna was reborn to be a great king that turned the Dharma wheel, the previous incarnation of the great Lord Jigten Sumgon. Bodhisattva Nagarjuna did not feel any pain from the decapitation, for he had attained enlightenment and would not be under the influence of karmic forces.

The Master Gampopa enlightened people that the dharma, “the path may clarify confusion”, actually includes different levels of Buddhist cultivation practices. Then, how to use the “path” to “clarify confusion”? For all confusions, we have to use all kinds of antidotes to directly clarify them. For example, that kind of concept of insisting that life is “permanent” is absurd and confused. Through practicing its antidote, death and impermanence, we can counteract the temporary profit and happiness in this life. Once we have the mindset that “we can no longer seek for such matters by means of endless pursuit under any circumstances”, at the time, we have just clarified the confusion of “insisting that life is permanent” through practicing the path of death and impermanence. This is the practice method for those of a lower capacity.

The character of “迷” (“confusion”) means adhering obstinately to errors. The phrase of “謬見” (“fallacy”) means the wrong view. The character of “道” (“path”) means the method of attaining Buddhahood which uses straightforward ways to counteract confusion. All kinds of antidotes means the methods of counteractions directed against all kinds of problems.

The Master Gampopa enlightened people that, similarly, that kind of concept of seeing the suffering cyclic existence as being happy and comfortable is absurd and confused. Through practicing its antidote, the suffering of the cyclic existence, we can counteract the seeming happiness and comfort in the three good realms of the cyclic existence. Once we have the feeling and mindset that “we can no longer cling to or be attached to something in any case”, we have just clarified the confusion of insisting that the three good realms are comfortable and happy” through practicing the path of the suffering of the cyclic existence. This is the practice method for those of a medium capacity.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a good friend who was a very accurate fortuneteller. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very grateful to him because it was him who introduced His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before. This good friend passed away last year because he did not deeply believe in death, impermanence, and the sufferings in the cyclic existence. He once said that he had attended so many pujas, had seen so many practitioners and Dharma lineage holders, and had received more than one thousand empowerments so that he should have accumulated a respectable amount of blessings; and he wanted to come back to the Human Realm to enjoy his next life. Originally, before he went to Beijing, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had still reminded him, “Beijing is very cold! Be careful not to run around.” He did not believe it and had dinner parties one after another all over Beijing. He had a stroke in the middle of going from one restaurant to another restaurant. Initially, it was him who introduced Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Theoretically speaking, because he had been able to help a practitioner who attained accomplishments later and, furthermore, benefited sentient beings, he should be in the ocean of merit together with the practitioner and would be unlikely to die in accident. However, because he had not really understood the sufferings of the cyclic existence and still been attached to the short-term happiness in this world, he would not believe deeply in death and impermanence and his karmic creditors would not be willing to let him off. When he died, all of his things were gone; his so-called good friends all disappeared. It was still Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who brought his remains back from Beijing to Taiwan; even his funeral was handled by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was just in Taiwan at the time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also appealed to His Holiness for going to the hospital to help to bless and create a virtuous condition for him. He obtained such result just from speaking a sentence wrong. Therefore, you should be careful about what you say.

You are accustomed to use the six senses, namely, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind to live your life every day. When your mind moves by these influences, you will give rise to the thoughts of greed, hatred, ignorance, pride, and double such that you will fall into the cyclic existence. As long as you still owe something to some sentient being, you will be reborn in the cyclic existence. No matter he owes you or you owe him, both of you have to come back to resolve the debt. You should not think doing a little evil does not matter. There are some girls who scream fearfully when seeing cockroaches or rats. As a result, the boy nearby will chase and kill the cockroaches or rats to rescue the girl. Thus, the girl causes the boy to kill sentient beings. The girl’s crime is more serious than the boy’s. When dating with your boyfriend or girlfriend, you should not say that you want to be with him or her life after life, even if the seas run dry and the rocks crumble. After the big earthquake in Japan, when tsunami came, the rocks all disappeared. Sometimes, you may forget you have said these words. But as long as the other party remembers, he or she will drag you to enter the cyclic existence again. Even if you want to be together forever, it is impossible because your karmas will not be exactly the same and you certainly will go to different places based on different karmas. For example, is it possible for two people to stay together for 24 hours? It is impossible! Will you be still separated when going to a toilet? Perhaps when being in the toilet, you carelessly step on and kill an ant, but the other does not do such thing. As a result, you have generated different karmas.

You do not remember the reincarnations of your past lives; and you do not see the reincarnations of your future lives either. As the karma one owes beings exists, the one will linger in the reincarnation of the cyclic existence. Why a Buddhist ought to carry out virtuous deeds is that his virtue, if great enough, could suppress his karmic creditors’ mind of resentment to him. You do not have to wait until after your death to experience the cyclic existence. Our everyday life now is in the cyclic existence. However, you still cannot understand the suffering of the cyclic existence. Venerable Milarepa once said that he would not dare to think about the sufferings in the Six Realms of the cyclic existence. And when having a retreat on Mt. Lapchi in 2007, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally saw the sufferings in the Six Realms of the cyclic existence. The phrase of “personally seeing” does not mean one sees with one’s eyes or with one’s imagination. It is indescribable and only those who have had experienced can know. After the retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reported this to His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and the experience was confirmed by His Holiness. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had attained enlightenments, so His Holiness could know. Of course, you do not know. Although you still cannot understand now, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will still tell you once again that it is really very painful.

There is a group named by themselves a Buddhist organization that teaches their believers to become a member of this group again in their future lives. If they do make this kind of vow and come back after 200 years but this group would not exist in the world then, doesn’t it just cause trouble to them? Generating such a vow of still wanting to be a human being again is not the true dharma of practice for liberating from the cycle of birth and death. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has seen many non-Buddhists who, during their lifetime, had been vegetarians and had also worshiped the Buddha, but had not cultivated for liberating from the cycle of birth and death. After they died, they, however, all became ghosts and discovered that all of what they had cultivated was useless. As a result, these ghosts will attach themselves to the body of a spirit-medium or become land god, and so on. In his latest years, Buddha Sakyamuni introduced the practice means of Bodhisattva path in Mahayana in hopes that the mundane people can accomplish the attainment of a Bodhisattva in current life and return with their aspirations for the benefit of the sentient beings. In the end, Buddha Sakyamuni saw that it would be difficult for the sentient beings in the age of degenerate Dharma to achieve the attainment of a Bodhisattva in one lifetime. Nonetheless, the Buddha didn’t want to abandon the sentient beings, so the Buddha introduced Buddha Amitabha to us. As long as one attained pure virtues through practice and accumulate a certain amount of meritorious virtues, he or she will have the opportunity to go to the Pure Land of Buddha Amitabha first even without the attainment of a Bodhisattva.  Thereby, one will continue to cultivate practice until he or she attains Buddhahood. If one is able to dissolve into the Dharma Realm, he or she can still attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. One should not think that he or she can reborn in the world with their aspirations, unless he or she has attained the achievement of a Bodhisattva. Otherwise, he or she will return with their own karma. Hence, if one is not able to attain the achievement in this lifetime, he or she should at least get reborn in the Pure Land.  The 48 vows of Amitabha Buddha are the vows generated by one who has attained the achievement of the 10th ground (bhumi) bodhisattva. They are only generated when a bodhisattva knows that he or she has been able to accomplish them.

After Sakyamuni Buddha had attained Nirvana, the world entered the so-called Age of Semblance Dharma. At the time, Buddhists were divided into two schools, the Existence School and the Emptiness School. Neither of the views of these schools was perfect. The Existence School thought all phenomena truly exist. The “emptiness” concept of the Emptiness School does not mean nothing exists. Those who insist that everything is empty think that everything is false and not true. This is just the dull emptiness. Even if they have entered Nirvana that has no birth and death, they are not in Nirvana without residue, but in defiled Nirvana. Only if you have attained achievements such that you can integrate into the Dharma realm and enter the Dharma nature, you can then no longer suffer from the cycle of birth and death. All people have the same Buddha nature the Buddha has. Everyone has the same innately possessed wisdom; and the subsequent wisdom is attained through practicing Buddhism. However, one can only develop one’s innately possessed wisdom by practicing Buddhism. If one can develop one’s innately possessed wisdom and the subsequent wisdom and truly cultivate oneself step by step so that one can really attain enlightenment on the nature of void and understand the causes and effects of all things and objects in the universe, one will then have great power to truly benefit all sentient beings.

With this kind of mindset, one will no longer seek the temporary benefit and happiness of this life. As one turns his mind into that state, one will see things very clearly. However, people often like to seek suffering for them themselves. Wisdom is the method used to help sentient beings to obtain the liberation from the cyclic existence. Wisdom is not obtained by praying. But rather, it starts from practicing Buddhism, by developing compassion, mercy, and Bodhicitta, and by eliminating one’s attachments and the improper concept of that this life is permanent. People with these concepts will naturally not accumulate new karma.

Also, for example, that kind of concept of hoping to obtain one’s own happiness of Nirvana and liberation from a person who thinks only of himself is absurd and confused. Through practicing its antidote, compassion, mercy, and Bodhicitta, we can counteract the confused concept. Once we have generated the mindset of thinking others are more important than ourselves, at the time, we have clarified the confusion of “only wanting to attain one’s own happiness of Nirvana and liberation” through practicing the “path” of compassion, mercy, and Bodhicitta. Similarly, for example, that kind of concept of “being attached to true existence and forms” is absurd and confused. Through practicing its antidote, the void of nature which is the true appearance of all dharmas, we can counter act the confused concept. Once we have attained enlightenment on that all dharmas are “empty and have no self-nature”, as if the void, at the time, we have clarified the confusion of “being attached to true existence and forms” through practicing the “path” that “all dharmas are void of self-nature”! This is the practice method for those of a higher capacity.

As for the practice method of those of a middle capacity, they would be very careful about their body, speech, and mind, and do not make any mistake. Only after we generate the concept of other people are more important than us, can we attain the mercy and compassion. And we should not be arrogant. When we see others practicing evil, we don’t need to make criticism. Nor should we learn and praise on it. Instead, we ought to be grateful for him, as the evil he has done let us see the fearfulness of the cause and effect, giving us the lesson that we should not do it. It helps us on the cultivation of mercy and compassion. Therefore they could be considered as our benefactors. In terms of education material, it could be divided into two kinds, positive material and negative material. When other people are not in suffering, then one himself will naturally not suffer.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took himself as example to explain. Many years ago, his wife wanted to leave. In the beginning, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not want to divorce but then thought and thought. It was not appropriate to continue as such. The wife was unhappy and it was not good to the children. So he decided to respect the wife’s decision and divorced. Although the mentor in the exoteric Buddhism at that time said that divorcing was not good and others would negatively view it. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would rather himself suffered. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s opinion on love affairs is to cut the Gordian knot. It makes yourself see the counterpart clearly and makes the counterpart see you clearly, too. But it does not mean that you immediately claim to divorce your spouse after going home. That is just an example upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We should not actively do that. Also, no one says you would be happier after divorcing. It depends. Doing business is the same. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bankrupted, Cheque books were torn and the credit card was cut off. The debt was as such at most and no more new debt was added. If it were you, you would borrow money to save the business and the result would be the debts again.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinchen were learning exoteric Buddhism many years ago, he had learned Buddhism to the state of unwilling to demanding anything for a while. He wanted neither working nor family. He thought he would have no time to recite the name of the Buddha if having to work. He felt boring when his wife demanded this or that. Many people would learn the Buddhism to that status finally. Thereafter, one night he had a dream in sleeping. He dreamed that he wore neatly and gorgeously whereas one another of him stood behind another counter. That him, in the Evil World of Five Turbidities, delivered a speech of Buddha dharma to the crowd with simple words. The listeners were all delighted. After waking up, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just knew that his original thinking was wrong. People who practice Buddha dharma of Mahayana should not be far away from the crowd, otherwise they may practice toward the way of Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha. Since the time was used to learn Buddhism, the beings should be benefited. Buddha Sakyamuni had scolded those people who practiced Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha. It is incorrect hat practicing Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha is wrong. But it cannot benefit vast beings. Fortunately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has wholesome roots from the accumulated lives so there were dharma protectors to protect and remind Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that the direction is wrong. The Buddha dharma must be usful. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often enlightened to everyone that if Buddha dharma works on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it must work on everyone. But it depends on whether you determine to do or not. In that year, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang issued the dharma clothes and many people had received. But until now there is only Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who could be the guru to promote dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never thought one day he would become a guru and promote the Buddha dharma. In front of the mandala, as well as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, he would never dare lying.

Buddha Sakyamuni had prophesied, according to the shared karma of beings, that there will be the droughts, famines and desertification on this globe at the decadence of Dharma. There will be 2 suns. Finally the globe would explode and get destroyed. There will be a meditator leading a flock of people to fly toward the Heaven Realm. From the perspective of modern science, it is possible for the sun to fission into 2 parts because an astronomical object would fission into 2 parts before explosion. That would dry out whole continents. No water. No Food. No creatures could live. Although the phenomena cannot be seen presently, the globe is toward this way. Only if all human being learn the Buddha, the developing direction of this shared karma can be changed.

Jetsun Milarepa had said that once if you are in the cycle of the rebirth in the Six Realms, there must be one life you would fall into the hell however much you practice. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened yesterday: once you are the disciple under Driknug Kagyu Lineage, the guru of Drikung Kagyu would take care of you for every lives in order to make you not to fall into the hell.

You should reflect yourself after going home tonight. Which of the inferior disciple, middling disciple or superior disciple do you want to practice? People who practice superior disciple should not be arrogant. People who practice inferior disciple should not be disheartened, too. Because middling disciple and superior disciple are from the inferior disciple. The inferior disciple is the foundation. If the inferior disciple is not practiced successfully, middling disciple and superior disciple could not be practiced to attain. Just like constructing a house, the house cannot be built up if the foundation is not laid well. No matter which of inferior disciple, middling disciple or superior disciple you practice, the concept of death and impermanence should be deeply remembered in your heart. Many years ago, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw his father’s death, it made Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche deeply experience the death and impermanence. His father, who had practiced Taoism to very high level, could help nothing after the death. It made Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realize that when human dies, nothing could be handled. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once touched the Buddha dharma, he knows that only the Buddha dharma can solve the important thing of our live and death. So he devoted all his strength into absorbingly learning Buddhism. While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche learns Buddhism, it is smooth. Although he divorced and bankrupted halfway, but these were not obstacles as to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. But own health is so important that it could allow oneself to keep on learning. Only the stupid people would learn Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche modestly said he is the stupid man so he could learn Buddhism. The clever people could not learn Buddhism.

The director of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the attendees that when he visited the section chief of the Ministry of the Interior for the puja affairs, the section chief immediately praised to him that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a great practitioner. He said when he participated the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses presided by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche last year, it happened that his father-in-law passed away then. No sooner had he had participated the puja, his daughter dreamer her grandfather, who became younger with all black hair. His daughter asked her grandfather that why did it have such change? His father-in-law answered: that is all your father’s help. Also, that section chief especially asked the director to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presides the Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses without any fees but he even donates! For every year, all offerings in the puja were donated to the Ministry of the Interior and the usage had never been designated. They took it as emergency aid, which helps countless poor family and many people. This year, in order to wish the great puja presides by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche be perfect and smooth, their minister personally wrote a banner. Then, when going to the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission, they also give a wish banner to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and said that more and more people know Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that those things are not important to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The most important thing is to make more and more people know that Drikung Kagyu Lineage really benefits beings and does many things. It does help Taiwanese society and that is enough.

The director also said that the believers who attended the puja yesterday claimed that they had never seen that believers can so quietly, neatly and orderly participate the puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said with laughing that because maybe there were nobody ever dispelled in the puja. At the yesterday’s puja, the sleeping believer was forced to leave the spot. It was not deliberately to be different. People who don’t understand would say: “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not compassionate. I would surely fall asleep if tired. Why shouldn’t them be allowed to participate the puja.“ But it is depicted in the Buddha sutras that the karmic retribution for sleeping in the puja is to fall into the Animal Realm. So they may be the pets in the next lives. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not want them to fall into the Animal Realm so he dispelled them. They may be upset with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not care at all. Whether they will learn Buddhism or not in the future, at least this experience would made them know that the reverence should be paid while attending a puja. Likely, when you were in the school and the professor was teaching classes, would the professor be angry at you if you slept down there? The speaker speeched on the stage while you slept down there. Isn’t it non-reverent? Such important thing of attending the puja is needless to say. In fact, there are so many public cases in the exoteric Buddhism to describe such things. When the believers fell asleep, the dharma master would throw thing to them. Although it is said in the Buddha sutras that “once it traverses through the ear root, the seed of Buddhahood would be kept eternally.” But it only counts if they have listened and received. It does not count if hearing with sleeping. In Ratnakuta Sutra and Tripitaka all said that it is not permitted to flatter the believers and distort the Buddha dharma.

This center, the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, does not belong to you. It belongs to the Drikung Kagyu Lineage. Maybe His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang will order another one to preside this center after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche passes away. You should not say that “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could not die before we die.” What if no one make offerings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after you all die? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche jokingly said that just let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pass away before you die.
