440: My Mother’s Most Peaceful Moment in This Life

On November 28 of 2009, my 72-year-old mother fell down suddenly. All of us children were taken by surprise and extremely concerned for her welfare. However, due to the blessings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she felt no pain even during her recuperation in the hospital.

My mother, firmly believing that the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help her, decided not to undergo surgery. All the way up till she died, my mother was never tortured by pain. This turn of events could have only been possible with the merciful blessings of the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

December 5th was the last day of my mother’s life. Fortunately, she received the Phowa Dharma performed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The moment of her death was perhaps the most peaceful moment in her life: silent and peaceful, she lie there like she was only asleep; her body was soft, her forehead was cool, but her crown chakra warm to the touch—all auspicious signs of the success of the Phowa Dharma. Thanks to the blessings of the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, my mother was reborn in the Pure Land. From the peaceful expression on her face I could tell that she had put down all her toils, worries, and strain. This was the result of the enormous kindness of the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

On Dec 17, the day of my mother’s funeral, Taiwan was hit by a cold front; however, over 200 Dharma brothers, my mother’s relatives and friends, and about 500 other people attended her funeral. Unbelievably, the venerable guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also showed up without any prior notice—I was so surprised and moved! What had I done to deserve to be treated so well? Tears spilled down my face.

By reciting mantras and conducting rituals, the compassionate Venerable Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not only helped my mother, but also helped the countless beings present at the funeral house. After conducting the rituals, the venerable guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got in his car to leave; suddenly he got out of his car once again and sprinkled the precious nectar from his jeweled vessel on the square outside of the hall, thereby purifying the area in which memorial service was held. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche later said that as he was ready to go, he saw many people rushing to the funeral. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche felt sympathy for these suffering and anxious people, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got out of the car again to help these people with their pain.

After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche left, the sky and the atmosphere around the First Funeral Home turned clearer than I had ever seen it and my mother’s sobbing friends who came to mourn her slowly found peace. Taking a last look at my mother, we saw that there wasn’t a wrinkle on her face which was now pink and youthful looking. Nowhere on her face could one see that years or suffering that she had lived through. We then transported her body to the Second Funeral House for cremation. After the cremation, on the crown of my mother’s skull, two concave depressions could be clearly seen, while the rest of her remains were full of color, instead of the usual white. Even the staff of the funeral company thought it was amazing and they kept saying that never have they seen such beautiful remains. These auspicious signs again pointed to the fact of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s successful completion of the Phowa Dharma.

My mother never studied Buddhism during her life, while she accumulated bad karma as many ordinary people do. However, while organizing her remaining items, we saw that she had written down her praise of the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on her calendar. (Since communication between parents and their children can be limited in today’s society, the elderly often write down their feelings on a calendar, which acts as sort of a diary, in hopes that their children will one day see the ideas that they are trying to convey.) In addition, she followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instructions to the letter: asking me to assume a vegetarian diet, refraining from undergoing any further surgical treatments, and even bringing forth a heart of great repentance. As her child, I felt immensely ashamed because I had failed to truly practice the Five Commandments, Ten Meritorious Acts, or Thirty-seven Practices of Bodhisattvas in order to accumulate the cause, condition, and merits for my own mother to attain rebirth in the Pure Land. Nonetheless, in her final moments, my mother still received the teachings Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Tibetan Buddhism’s most auspicious Phowa as bestowed by the venerable and compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, thus attaining rebirth in the Pure Land. This is the grace and virtue of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as well as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great mercy and compassion, which never gives up on any sentient beings.
