081: The Incredible Origin of My Taking Refuge Under the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

When talking about my seeking refuge under the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I have to start my story from the time I was looking to rent storage space. Also, I would first like to thank my sister’s friend, dharma brother Xu Miao Chi, for her help.

I am a clothing service wholesaler. The way I distribute my clothes is sell them to couples—husbands and wives or boyfriends and their girl friends— who then sell my clothes in the market. I needed a warehouse for my stock and was also looking for retail sales to pay for the rent. After looking in many locations, my choice came down to two warehouses: one was close to the market with cheaper rent, while the other one was located in a relatively deserted part of town with higher rent. But I preferred the later, especially because it was in the basement.

I made everything simple at the start of my business, and often worked alone till late in the warehouse. While there, I started to notice, without any reason, I began to experience a subtle sense of fear. One day, two sales people, boyfriend and girlfriend, wanted to come by the warehouse to re-supply their stock. I asked the girl to watch the upstairs of the warehouse, while the boy went to the basement to get the stock. I was planning to go out and buy dinner and some liquor. I asked them if they wanted to join me for a drink when I came back. Usually they would willingly accept my invitation, but this time they were reluctant and asked me to hold off on buying dinner until they left. I thought it was unusual for them to decline my request. Watch the store for me was something they were usually willing to do.

Suddenly a thought came to my mind. I remembered the girl mentioning that she has so called “Yin-Yang eyes” that could see ghosts. Since she had refused to accompany her boyfriend down, I asked her if there was anything wrong with the basement. Although she answered that there was nothing unusual there, her toned suggested that she thought otherwise, perhaps she was hesitant about scaring me.

After that, that subtle fear I was feeling disturbed me more and more often. Also when I arranged and tidied up my stock, the smell of a dead rat would often waft up from the piles of packaged new clothing. Although I tried to find of the body, I never found it and one day the smell disappeared suddenly—a strange situation, to be sure. The security alarm also triggered frequently without any reason. Although several maintenance staff came to fix or change the device, the incidents continued. Another thing which I found strange was that several customers, all of whom I did not know, would come by my warehouse and buy several thousand dollars, sometimes more than ten thousand dollars, of clothing. Although these customers were important to me, the sight of them leaving with piles of clothing (the clothing I sold was inexpensive and therefore several thousand dollars would buy a lot) left me puzzled.

Because the clothing I sold was “Chinese style”, the so-called Chinese cotton-padded jacket, many groups from Chinese temples often purchased clothing from me. One night, several representatives from a temple made an appointment to see some possible designs for their new uniform. The next day they came with their abbot to select the design and discuss the details of the order. During the meeting, I could not help but ask if they thought anything unusual had ever happened in this warehouse.  They asked me to take them to check out the warehouse. Walking into the basement, they said there were a lot of ghosts in the basement, and they continued to emphasize “a lot”. The temple staff also told me the reason why I decided to rent this place was because I had been called by these ghosts who had “convinced” me to rent this space. Furthermore, the temple staff told me the ghosts probably wanted to use me to help themselves. The staff mentioned that they provided a service to expel ghosts for a fee; however, my intuition told me that the people who could help these ghosts definitely were not those temple staff stood before me.

I thought that this incident was important enough that I should tell my family— especially my second elder sister. During this period, I frequently received phone calls from Ms. Xu Miao Qi. She told me that her Guru, the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, could help me. She was earnest in the hope that I could meet him. Although I found myself being a bit impatient, I still listened to her politely. (Now I feel embarrassed for my impatience and feel great thanks for her help.) Around that time, I also sought help from a medium. The medium confirmed that there were ghosts in my warehouse. His answer left me at wit’s end. In some aspects, though, I am strong-willed and although I was afraid of those ghosts, I did not want to expel them because they were there prior to me. Therefore, I decided I would move out and start to look for a new warehouse. Meanwhile, I kept feeling like I should help out those ghosts, though I did not know how.

One day when I opened the main door of my house, I saw a street dog standing in front of my door. The dog stood there and looked at me. Not knowing why, I took the dog to the warehouse and washed it. Because I seldom took time off, I decided to take the afternoon off and take a stroll with the dog. Walking with my girlfriend, we discussed where to walk and, surprisingly, we decided to meet with Ms. Xu’s Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and so our footsteps carried in that direction.

On arriving at the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company, we saw many people respectfully standing in line, talking in a soft voice—this was my first impression of our lineage. Ms. Xu was also there that day. When greeting her, I could tell she was very happy, probably because she thought she had finally persuaded me to meet with her Guru. We were then allowed to cut in line to talk with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When it was my turn, I kneeled before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche (at that time people still respectfully called Rinchen Dorjee Rrinpoche Master). Kneeling there, I could feel Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very compassionate. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked me what happened and I told about the events in my previous warehouse. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked me if I could attend pujas, and I thought could do at least three. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also asked me to quit all alcohol and asked my girlfriend to report to him if I drank again. After signing up for pujas, we left Yi Xian Road. Next afternoon a friend came to visit me with beers, but I didn’t drink with him. Previously I used to drink in the warehouse almost every day, something that would often upset my girlfriend, and thus rejected my friend’s offer like that surprised my girlfriend. She was amazed at how I had become so obedient. I, myself, also felt it was strange, as I never drank any alcohol thereafter.

My first experience of attending the Chod puja was a good one. Although my legs ached due to the cross-legged position during meditation, I still wanted to attend further pujas and hoped sentient beings could receive Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help through my attendance. I told my girlfriend that sentient beings were truly amazing in how they passed through so many channels before they could attend Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s pujas. Later on, I successfully rented a store in the market.
