073: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Enlightenment of Causes and Effects Helped My Pain from Cut by Surgery Knife

I frequently go hiking, yet starting from the end of Spring 2006, I began to have a mysterious pain on my left knee. The cause was unclear since I did not remember bumping or hitting it. My knee began to swell and going up and down stairs was difficult. Soon, even just walking around became a problem.

As the situation was becoming unbearable, I had no choice but go see a doctor to get it checked out. During the ultrasound on my knee, the doctor, in an unusual manner, said: “That is really a nice and well-developed cyst! Were you hit by anything?” After inviting several medical students and in-house physicians to have a look, the doctor continued: “Could we take pictures and use them as a sample case for teaching purposes? It is really rare to see such a well-developed cyst as yours!” The examination confirmed semilunar cartilage fragmentation and that an operation was required to remove the fragmented and damaged cartilage. After discussion the procedure with the doctor, it was decided to schedule the operation before Moon Festival, as there was a seven-day consecutive holiday at that time. The doctor said that I could be out of the hospital and walking three days after the operation; and as I anticipated no major problem, I assumed I could use remaining days of my holiday to rest at home.

A few days before the operation, I had the virtuous condition to see the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. I implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for help in my having a smooth operation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, however, replied that, as a result of all the killing I had done, my karmic debts were tremendous. I murmured to myself, “What have I actually killed?” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as if sensing my doubt, said, “I have contemplated that you led a group of people to eat seafood near the ocean. You were very picky about what seafood you ate—if it was not fresh, you did not eat it, preferring instead to eat the fish and shrimp that had yet to be killed.” At that moment I was stunned and speechless. My mind was a complete blank; my only thought was of how powerful Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued, “It is up to you to have the operation or not. Getting well is not guarantied, even if you have the operation. Eventually you must pay back the debt you owe to sentient beings. You think about it and come back again if you are sure about having that operation, I will bless you, but only so that your operation goes smoothly.”

After leaving the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company, I wondered whether I should go ahead with the operation or not. What happens if I didn’t get well after the operation? How should I pay back the debt I owed to sentiment beings? If I could pay back the debt without having the operation, why, then, should I proceed with the operation at all?

The day before the operation, I still had no answer to whether I should have the operation or not. Yet in compliance with hospital procedure, I started to arrange my stay at the hospital, which included an appointment with the hospital’s chief surgeon. Blindly following the standard procedure, I reported to the chief surgeon where he explained the entire operation. I was stunned: the procedure outlined by the chief surgeon was world’s apart from the one the attending doctor have previously explained. In actuality, this operation was not as simple as I had assumed. Right away, I told the chief surgeon that I did not want to have the operation.

The next day I went to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and begged him to let me attend a puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed without hesitation. Since that day, I have never stopped attending pujas. What was remarkable was that while in pujas, I could sit with crossed legs for several hours, despite the fact that I still had trouble even walking. At present, my knee does not hurt anymore and the cyst, caused by excess fluid around the knee joint, has disappeared as well. I can now return to my mountain hiking.

I am grateful to my Vajra Guru, the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for all the blessings and helps.
