His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Puja Teachings – October 21, 2012

At the sincere invitation of Ishinomaki Tourism Association of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, on October 21, 2012, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness of the Drikung Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism for the first time in the city of Ishinomaki, to help liberate the sentient beings who had suffered and died in the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami of Japan. This Great Puja was attended by 124 people, including six believers from Japan, five believers from Taiwan, and 113 disciples from Japan and Taiwan. With the blessings of Lord Jigten Sumgon, gurus of lineage from all past generations, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang and Dharma Protector Achi, the Great Puja turned out to be a pure and perfect event, with its merits extensively benefiting boundless sentient beings and all the attendees filled with Dharma joy.

This Great Puja had its origination with the sincere invitation of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Japanese disciples and believers, as well as Mr. Goto, Director of the Ishinomaki Tourism Association. It was the very first Great Puja for Transferring Consciousness presided over by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the Tohoku region of Japan. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche responded to the imploration of sentient beings and compassionately promised to help those who died in the March 11, 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami of Japan. This Puja was also the first Great Puja for Transferring Consciousness held in the city of Ishinomaki. It not only provided vast local suffering sentient beings with immeasurable benefits, but also spread the Dharma lineage of the Drikung Kagyu Order from Kyoto to the Tohoku region of Japan. Thus, it was truly an auspicious event for the Drikung Kagyu Order.

It was sunny on the day of the Puja. Two rainbows appeared across the sky at the time when the plane His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche boarded was about to land. Then, wondrous rain like nectar water began to fall for a few minutes as His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived at the airport. Later, when His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was about to arrive at the venue of the Puja, a rare giant bird appeared which kept hovering around over it as though to bid welcome to the great practitioner. But as soon as His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived at the venue, the giant bird disappeared without a trace. This was extremely incredible. All such auspicious signs were indicating that a grand practitioner had arrived to benefit countless local sentient beings.

As the Puja was starting, all the attendees stood up reverently with their palms together to welcome His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascending to the Dharma throne. While Dharma music was playing, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche entered the venue under the protection of the jeweled parasol, walking over the white carpet embroidered with the Eight Auspicious Signs and sprinkled with flower petals. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made reverent prostrations to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, offered Khadak to His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang and lit the lamps to offer to the Buddha before ascending to the Dharma throne.

Before performing the Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave precious teachings to the attendees:

The Dharma that we’re going to perform today is “the Great Amitabha Dharma of Transferring Consciousness.” The purpose of Buddhism is to benefit sentient beings rather than a means to make someone famous or rich. The causal conditions for performing the Great Amitabha Dharma of Transferring Consciousness originated with the Japanese disciple Nakamori Mitsuhiko and Chairman Goto of the Ishinomaki Tourism Association, as well as Ms. Onodera, all of whom came to the Kyoto Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to sincerely implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help those who died in the great tsunami caused by the March 11, 2011 Tohoku Earthquake of Japan. Buddhism attaches importance to causal conditions, therefore as long as sentient beings reverently implore for help from Buddhism, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as well as the guru would attune to such imploration and help them.

There are two methods to practice Buddhism, including those through Exoteric Buddhism and Tantra, respectively. Exoteric Buddhism is what you’d see the Japanese people usually practice in terms of reciting the Buddhist sutras, chanting the name of the Buddha and sitting for meditation. Most people who are learning Buddhism follow Exoteric Buddhism, and only a small number of people who have met certain conditions can learn Tantra, which was introduced into China from India. After its gradual introduction into China proper (referred to as the “center of the earth”), one branch was introduced into Tibet. In Japan, there is also the Eastern Tantra, which was spread into it from the Tang dynasty of China. However, the Tang Tantra that was introduced into China proper has been lost now. Even the Eastern Tantra which was introduced into Japan has retained only two of the four components of the Tantra. Only Tibetan Tantra has completely retained all the four parts. Tibetan Buddhism has four lineages: Gelug, Nyingma, Sakya and Kagyu. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche belongs to the Drikung Kagyu Order of the Kagyu lineage.

Exoteric Buddhism provides all theories that have been taught by the Buddha. Tantra, on the other hand, is a practical method used to help oneself and sentient beings to attain Buddhahood. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can help you understand it with a simple analogy: Exoteric Buddhism is like your education from kindergarten through high school, and Tantra is like your education through the university, master’s and PhD programs that lead you to become a professor in the end.

The Great Amitabha Dharma of Transferring Consciousness that we’ll perform today is a Tantric Dharma which originated in Tibet and is the method to liberate sentient beings and it had been transmitted to Padmasambhava by Buddha Amitabha personally. The presiding practitioner who performs the Great Amitabha Dharma of Transferring Consciousness must be one with the fruition of a Rinpoche. “Rinpoche” means treasure – treasure of the human world. There are two layers of meaning with the word “liberation.” One of them is “Chao,” or “transcend,” which means to help sentient beings in the Three Evil Realms (the Hell, the Hungry Ghost, and the Animal Realms) be reborn in the Three Virtuous Realms, or even the Pure Land with Buddhist Compassion. The other is “Du,” or “pass,” – helping sentient beings pass on to the other shore – the land of the Buddha. “Chaodu” (liberation) is not something easily achieved through reciting of the Buddhist sutras alone.

The meaning of liberation is to lead the deceased from one place to another. For example, if you want to go to Tokyo but haven’t done so before, you wouldn’t know how to get there and somebody would tell you where you can board the bus. This would be like someone trying to offer help by reciting the Buddhist sutras or write down the Buddhist sutra for the deceased. But it does not guarantee success of the deceased in going to the Pure Land of the Buddha. Or, if the person who would like to go to Tokyo does not have money, or decided not to go, he wouldn’t make it either. There may be some people who have achieved accomplishment through cultivation and would buy you the ticket for the bus, but still you have to board the bus yourself. Then again, there is no guarantee if you can get there, since you may oversleep aboard the bus, or get off the wrong station by hearing the announced station wrong. The best way is that someone can take you there – someone who has been there and has the capacity to take you there. This is what only a Tantric practitioner can do. So according to the Dharma text, the Great Amitabha Dharma of Transferring Consciousness is a method of “Fast-Track Attainment” – the fastest way to fruition.

In Tibet, this Dharma usually takes one whole day to perform. But it’s a commercial society nowadays and everyone is busy and wouldn’t have the calm mind to attend a puja that lasts one entire day. Though this may be the case, you’d be willing to spend one whole day drinking or traveling. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to work a little harder to perform it faster for all of you. However it does not mean that any content would be omitted, since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performs this Dharma in the state of meditation.

I hope that believers who came today have compassion and the desire to mend their ways in attending the puja, on behalf of all sentient beings that have suffered and died in the Tsunami of Japan. They should also have the compassion to attend the puja on behalf of sentient beings that have been eaten or killed in this area. These sentient beings that have been killed harbor resentment, and that’s why you need to attend the puja on their behalf in the hope that they can receive help from Buddhism. Today’s puja will help not only human beings, but also animals and sea creatures killed by you. This is why you must have compassion and the desire to mend your ways when you attend the puja.

Now that you implore for the Buddha’s help, you should follow the Buddha’s teachings. According to the Buddhist sutras, the disasters, wars and accidents in the human world are all karmic retributions resulting from killing sentient beings and eating them. The reason why such a great disaster happened to this region was that people in this area have harmed many sentient beings. Though not many local believers came today, they can represent the suffering sentient beings in attending the puja and enable them to receive help from Buddhism. You must keep your spirit up during the puja, and avoid feeling tired or sleepy, as such acts would mean disrespect for the deceased.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then began to perform the Dharma. First of all, he started with the ritual of praying and purifying the mandala, praying to Amitabha to have His presence in here. This was followed by the ritual of offerings to the Yidam Amitabha. Then there was the ritual in which the presiding guru united with the Yidam as one with no difference before offerings were made to Amitabha and praises given to Amitabha, Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then informed the attendees that no explanation would be given since the following section was Tantra. During the Dharma ritual, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained the content and its profound significance section by section in simple language. Thereby, the attendees aroused a great deal of reverence for Buddhism and His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, deeply understanding the omnipresent help that Buddhism can provide to sentient beings. Meanwhile, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees in chanting the Amitabha Mantra for a long time, allowing them to receive the immeasurable blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Next, the guru performed the Tsok ritual, which, after the offerings to the Yidam, allowed the attendees to have the rare and auspicious opportunity to share food with the Yidam, so that they could accumulate the resources and blessed rewards for learning Buddhism. Next, during the ritual of liberation, an ordained disciple, holding the name list of the deceased, made three prostrations to the presiding guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on the mandala. As the ritual to transfer consciousness went on, for quite a few times, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the attendees to say the names of the deceased that they would like to have liberated, and instructed them to stand up and bow three times to the mandala. The attendees perceived the great power with which His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche liberated sentient beings compassionately and felt the particularly stately and dignifying atmosphere.

As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was performing the Dharma, the attendees could feel the auspicious signs that the ground was shaking along with booming sound. Furthermore when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was sprinkling rice and flower petals into the air signifying all sentient beings praising and making offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, the rice and flower petals were suspended airborne for a short while before falling down gradually. This was extremely wondrous, as the sprinkled rice and flower petals were everywhere in the air, with visually clear distribution. Such auspicious signs meant that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Ten Directions had accepted the praises and offerings. It also signified the immeasurable achievement of a great practitioner.

▲ Rice and flower petals were suspended airborne for a short while before falling down gradually.

▲ Even when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had put down his hand, the rice grains were still hanging in the air.

Upon perfect completion of the Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to give Dharma teachings to the attendees: We should all thank Chairman Goto of the Ishinomaki Tourism Association and Ms. Onodera for the origination of the puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wished this land all auspiciousness but with one important condition – do not harm sentient beings any more.

In the puja today, there are some older disciples who are not nimble. You can see all the items on the mandala have been shipped from Taiwan, totaling 56 pieces of luggage including 47 boxes and 9 large packages. The disciples arrived in Tokyo the day before yesterday and hurried to Ishinomaki yesterday when they started to set up the mandala in the afternoon. There was a power outage in the venue after 11:00 p.m. so they got up early the next day to continue with the set-up. They might be a bit tired today and there were a few small problems as the whole set-up was not done very well.

From the Buddhist perspective, there is no difference in people if they come from different countries and have different religions. These disciples from Taiwan followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in learning Buddhism. With their money as well as hard work, they have made a little contribution to this area in Japan. Even though only a small number of Japanese believers are present today, the number itself is not important. What’s important is whether they can do something to help this land. I hope that the Japanese people present today can have correct understanding of Buddhism, and that Buddhism can help more sentient beings in need here.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the disciple who played the cymbals earlier to stand up and asked him how old he was. The disciple replied, “I’m 62 years old.” Comparing to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who was now 65, this disciple looked much older. Just now he did not have enough strength to play the cymbals, simply because he had not learned Tantra.

Upon perfect completion of the Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wished all attendees happiness and auspiciousness. The attendees stood reverently with their palms together to bid farewell to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and to express their gratitude to the guru for auspiciously performing the Dharma. The Great Dharma of Amitabha for Transferring Consciousness usually requires one entire day to perform in Tibet. However, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completed it perfectly in just a little more than three hours, performing in the meditative state of his Dharma nature with the immeasurable merits he had accumulated. They could not help but praising and feeling grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for promoting Buddhism so selflessly without any interest in gaining reputation or profits, and for benefiting countless sentient beings with his great accomplishment through his Tantric practice. Everyone deeply felt the magnificence and auspiciousness of the Puja.

After the Puja, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche especially stated that after the perfect conclusion of the Great Puja, the missing vessels and bodies due to the Tohoku Tsunami on the March 11 of last year (2011) would be found in Japan. On October 25 – four days after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche finished performing the Dharma with perfection, news was released in Japan confirming that, exactly as predicted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the vessels and bodies that had been the victims of 3/11 Tohoku Tsunami were found in places far away from the initial locations where they were hit. All thanks go to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for helping countless sentient beings with his incredibly great power and for removing their suffering. All praises go to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his immeasurable accomplishment, as well as for responding and bringing immense pure Dharma benefits to countless sentient beings in the void with great compassion and immeasurable merits from his cultivation.

Simultaneously a puja was held at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei.

Before the puja, a male disciple came up front to express his gratitude to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the benevolence and kind help to his family. He shared the experience in which the guru helped his father and himself first this time.

His eldest sister, eldest brother-in-law and second elder sister all took refuge with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and became the guru’s disciples. The year 1999 was when he first sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At that time, he was just a middle school student, only knowing that he was about to meet a very remarkable practitioner. The questions that he asked then had nothing to do with Buddhism and he failed to seize the opportunity to learn Buddhism. During his high school years, his sisters continued to attend the pujas and took refuge with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. But he only attended the Chod Pujas now and then, interested only in the blessed rewards for attending the puja without the mind to learn Buddhism at all. He did not make up his mind to take refuge with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and learn Buddhism until four years ago (2008) when both his grandmothers died and were liberated through the auspicious Phowa and Chod performed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

First, he would like to repent that he did not have the sincerity to make offering after taking refuge. It wasn’t easy that he implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for a Dharma name, but he failed to reverently make offerings. After taking refuge, he did not have a Dharma name or the red vest of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Instead, he only had the blue vest. During one of the pujas, he was reprimanded by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, “You have the money to date someone but no money to make an offering.” However, it was also because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great blessings that got him to go to Taipei to repent to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche by scooter from Taoyuan every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday after class. Because of his repentance, he was able to see with his own eyes how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately and patiently helped all sentient beings with different Dharma methods, covering various types of problems, from health to career, etc. He also learned that when there is no sincere offering, there is no reverence for the Three Jewels, let alone learning Buddhism!

Just after he was undergoing transformation of his mind, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had him step forward as if the guru could see him through, and asked him whether he was aware of his own faults. He replied, “I have no reverence for the Three Jewels, nor sincerity for making an offering.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sighed and asked him how old he was, and told him to be a grown-up and stop behaving like a child! Then the guru bestowed the Dharma name “Dinghui” upon him. In retrospect, he was really amazed how incredible Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching method was! And he thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for teaching him like a father!

Then, he continued to share the story of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helping his father. He had always respected and admired his father since he was a little kid. His father liked to study fengshui, Chinese horoscopes, and the onomastics of people. He not only had a large circle of friends, but also treated them better than his own family. And almost every day he had friends dropped by to have tea. Because of this, his father was able to make a career and a living out of fortune-telling and geomancy. But the disciple did not realize that fortune-telling was a very bad profession until he listened to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings, because everything was a manifestation of cause and effect – if there was evil karmic retribution, there would be an evil cause preceding it. But a fortune-teller’s goal was to help people increase fortune while staying away from disaster. If a person seeking fortune-telling could really avoid the evil karmic retribution that he was supposed to have, then his unresolved root evil causes must be shouldered by the fortune-teller. That was why his father had poor health with diabetes and heart problems.

In 2002 – two years after his two sisters took refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately asked them about their father’s health after one Chod Puja. At that time neither of them knew anything about the health conditions of their father and so they replied, “He was all right!” Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche turned to him and said, “Tell your father to watch out for his heart!” They only knew that his father was very busy at that time, often traveling to mainland China to perform geomancy and fortune-telling, but had little knowledge about his health. After they went home, they saw that their father kept rubbing the position of the heart and asked him what was wrong. They confirmed that his heart was not well and needed to go to the hospital for a check-up in a couple of days.

His sister told his father that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him to watch out for his heart. Their father was taken by surprise and asked them to tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, “Thank you Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for your concern!” Their mother also was surprised by this and asked them if any of them had told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche about their father’s heart problems. Even none of their father’s friends, who had the so-called supernatural power, was aware of their father’s illness. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, by only seeing his sisters, could tell it and initiated a reminder to their father like a father caring for his child.

After the weekend puja ended, his sister reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that her father was having a serious problem with his heart and forwarded his regards to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who let out a deep and long sigh. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked them to relate this message to his father: when performing fortune-telling for others, sometimes he should not speak it out even though he knows it. He should pretend not to have known the fortune of those who have no reverence or repentance even though he can easily see it. Don’t make money at every opportunity he has. After you go home, give your father a nectar pill. He wouldn’t have a life-threatening situation this time. At hearing this, they were filled with such emotion that words were beyond them; the only thing that they knew was to give thanks to the guru again and again.

Later, his sister felt that it would be best if she could get his father to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in person. So after letting his father take the nectar pill, she shared this thought with him that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very concerned about his health and asked him if he would like to have an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche along with her. In the end, her father nodded his head and agreed! On the following Saturday afternoon, the sisters and brother accompanied their father to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Upon meeting their father, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told him, “Now that you came today, we should have a chat like friends!” This enabled their father to immediately let down his psychological guard that he had had. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave a nectar pill from the Drikung Kagyu ancestral monastery to their father and asked him to take it instantly, telling him that it would give him a great deal of help. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also told their father earnestly, “You are getting quite old! You should think about matters of life and death for yourself and focus on practicing Buddhism so that you can be prepared for the future. Don’t worry about your children. As long as both your daughters remain as my disciples, I shall be taking good care of them with my entire life. If your son also takes refuge, I would take care of him as well. So you really should practice Buddhism diligently instead of worrying about your children.” As he recalled that moment, he felt that he was so stupid and selfish for not seizing the opportunity to follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in learning Buddhism right then.

Later his father went to the hospital to have his heart checked, the result showed that no problems had been found and everything was normal. The diabetes which their father had had for many years could be controlled through diet without any medication thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. The hospital test report of last year (2011) even showed that his diabetic index was the same as a normal person, which even surprised the doctors. After this, it made them realize more profoundly: Fortune-telling cannot really change one’s future. Even a fortune-teller like their father who enjoyed such a well-known reputation without any publicity was unable to tell his own fortune and change his fate. Only a practitioner with grand capacity like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could help their father get through such crisis. Had it not been for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they might have lost their father who worked so hard all his life to bring them up. Once again he expressed his gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the auspicious Dharma blessings and help.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught the disciples to always keep the impermanence of death in mind, and to always examine themselves and correct their faults. Only when they had mended their ways would their families feel the auspiciousness and greatness of Buddhism. He repented that from the date when he took refuge, he failed to integrate Buddhism into his life, or change his bad habits and have filial piety for his parents. He still depended on his parents like a young child who refused to grow up and made them worry for him. Consequently he failed to make his parents really feel the auspiciousness of the Dharma taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which would make them want to learn Buddhism too.

He repented that he learned Buddhism with greedy mind while Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dedicated his life to taking care of his disciples. He failed to act completely in accordance with the guru’s teachings – he would be unable not only to set himself free from life and death, but also to help his parents and all suffering sentient beings. He was resolved that from now on he would absolutely follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche closely in learning Buddhism and act 100% in accordance with the guru’s teachings. Once again he expressed his profound gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving them help and the continuous blessings and teachings. Finally, he reverently prayed for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to have good health, to keep turning the Dharma wheel, to spread Buddhism far and wide and to benefit all sentient beings.

Then, another male disciple shared how His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took care of his family, as well as how his son received help through the auspicious Phowa.

His whole family took refuge with His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on November 2, 2008. Before meeting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, his son had already lost vision, had a stroke in the left hand and left foot, and there was a failed draining tube inserted in his brain. In addition, he had serious problems in the ventricle where there was intracranial pressure, hydrocephalus, and asymmetrical ventricle. With the manual for very severe multiple disabilities, his son was a little over one year old at that time.

In more than one year’s time since his son was born, it was like hell on earth for his family. The doctors had made multiple arrangements for his son to be hospitalized for examinations, including magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography, X-ray, echocardiography, multiple times of urine catheter and blood-drawings for tests (for a newborn baby, blood-drawing is a nightmare. Often times his wife held the baby crying together.)  Then there were the liver and spleen ultrasound, as well as the examinations regarding optic nerve, cornea, evoked potentials, and genetics, in addition to child neurology, child brain surgery, hematology, and genetics, involving many different specialties. In the end, no matter where and how the baby was examined, the result was the same – with the doctor saying that all examinations and test results were normal and no cause of illness could be found.

They tried all sorts of methods, including divination, praying to deities, making up for good luck,  horoscope, rice divination, fortune-telling, worshipping Jigong, the Third Prince, Saint Guandi, the Empress, Jade Emperor, Taoism and Christianity, and had constantly been going back and forth between different places in Taiwan such as Yilan, Yunlin, Chiayi and Taoyuan. As long as someone was telling them where to seek help, they would go there, only to find that there was no help at all. His son was at a critical stage then and two more big surgeries were awaiting him – one was that the doctor was to take risks with umbilical cord blood transplant in order to cure his rare disease, the other was to have an additional surgery on the ventricles as suggested by the doctor to solve the problem of intracranial pressure.

On the day that his son was admitted to the hospital, a good friend of his, who had attended the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness a few times, called his wife, and suggested that they seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before the surgeries. This was the turning point when things started to change for the better for his son.

The first time they had an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the guru asked them: What’s the matter? His wife reported: Our son has a very rare illness – the marble baby. She burst into tears and described the complex medical procedures which their son had had to go through. Just then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took the baby over from her and held it in his arms, and then started to chant the mantras and bless the baby. At that time, he was completely unaware of the great compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas that gave his son the blessings and saved the baby from the gate of hell. The next day when they returned to the hospital with their son for a check-up, the doctor told them that a miracle had happened – their son no longer needed the surgery on the ventricle. This was the first good news that he had heard since his son was born. Later, some Dharma brothers went to visit their son in the hospital, and shared with them many stories of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helping sentient beings compassionately. This made them realize that truly there were living Bodhisattvas in the world who would offer help without seeking anything in return.

He remembered that once after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche finished blessing his son and they went back to the car. When his wife took off his son’s hat, she had tears all over her face saying astonishingly that his fontanel, which had remained bulging all the time, had become depressed and soft. Since the last time a surgery was conducted on the brain, the doctor said such a surgery to drain water from the brain would normally make the fontanel depressed and soft. But it had been nearly two months since that operation and his son’s fontanel had still remained bulging. Even the doctor was at a loss as to how to explain this. The depressed and soft fontanel meant that the intracranial pressure had become lower and stable. This bulging condition had for a long time bothered them, but it was gone after only 10 short minutes of blessings by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Once again, they had witnessed a miracle.

One morning after he woke up and was standing up, he accidently stepped on his son’s ankle as he heard “click.” The baby started crying and he thought: I’m finished. The doctor had told them that nothing should happen to his son’s bones. If there was a fracture, it would be a very serious problem. He blamed himself for being so careless, and held his son, crying along with him. His wife, on the other hand, also cried with them. How badly his heart was aching! He kneeled down in front of the mandala to pray, wholeheartedly, that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could give the blessings, and blamed himself for being so careless. Then he applied Bao Yuan Gao ointment on his son’s ankle and hurried to the hospital. After the X-ray, the doctor told him that the bone was not fractured and there was no bleeding or swollen condition. Everything appeared like there had been no accident and his son was singing as usual. This really was a miracle. They once again had witnessed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s power of the compassion which could help with all kinds of suffering.

With the blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they once had even forgotten that their son was a child with a very rare disease and was issued a manual classifying him as having severe multiple disabilities. Normally, if a person had any of the conditions of intracranial pressure, hydrocephalus, or asymmetrical ventricle, he definitely would need to be hospitalized. His son had all three of them, and during the two and a half years of such conditions, he always sang happily particularly when he came to the Buddhist Center; he was even able to go and attend the puja abroad quite a few times. After he took refuge, his son’s severe disease did not cause any inconvenience to the people around them. On the contrary, his son’s cuteness in singing songs often brought them a cheerful time. Even though the family had a little child with such severe disease, they often enjoyed the harmony of a happy family. The heart of his entire family had been set right by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Later, his son’s life began to wither slowly. The four types of disintegration as described by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to set in with his son – he lost his teeth, had dry skin and cold body. Then he was no longer singing. One day, his son was chanting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Long Life Prayer by himself very clearly. This continued for a few days and after that they hardly heard him singing anymore. Both he and his wife were very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving their son the blessings. One day before their son passed away, he did the training in the form of rehabilitation walking on the treadmill as usual, and actually broke his personal record by continuously walking on it for 15 minutes – what persistence he had as a little child with the condition of a stroke in the left hand and foot! On that night, his son’s breath became heavier, but his consciousness was clear.

They thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the great wisdom and compassion. In the half a year before their son passed away, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche demonstrated compassion and mercy with regard to their son’s thin blessed rewards and instructed the couple to make full prostrations during the morning prayer session in the Buddhist Center every day, so that they could help their son accumulate blessed rewards for going to the Pure Land. On the morning when their son passed away, he went to the Buddhist Center to make full prostrations as usual while his wife stayed at home with their son. At around 7:00 a.m., their son passed away very peacefully in his wife’s arms in front of the mandala at home without any intubation. Soon after he hurried to the hospital, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already performed the Phowa for their son, who had warm right hand and aperture of Brahma, which at one time made his mother believe that her grandson had been revived. His mother also had great praises for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, exclaiming that the guru was so phenomenal. The next day, his second elder brother and eldest sister came to see the child. At that time there was no freezer, and their son’s body was placed on a temporary bed-shaped cabinet. His siblings were all having a very heavy heart. But after seeing the serenity of this child, the whole family’s gloominess was lifted. They witnessed the auspiciousness and greatness of Buddhism and believed in the auspicious signs indicating that the child had gone to a good place. Hence there was not much sadness in their heart.

Both he and his wife were very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving the blessings with the auspicious Phowa so that their son could be so peaceful when passing away – in a manner that showed more peacefulness than being asleep. Had their son not met the guru, he would have been tortured to death by all sorts of medical treatments. Even if he had been alive, he would have felt that being dead was better than alive, and would have survived only by means of continuous exchange blood transfusion. . Last year, they saw another marble baby just like their son. That child, at the age of seven years old, was also blind and could not sit up well, and he was going through the exchange blood transfusion at the hospital, which was conducted on him twice a week, leaving needle holes all over his hands. He was sad for him for a long time, and for multiple times had tried to persuade the mother of the marble baby to seek an audience with the guru. But his efforts failed due to insufficient causal condition, and a few months later that child passed away in the ICU.

He and his family were thankful for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great wisdom and compassion. What the guru had helped was his whole family instead of just their son’s wisdom-life. He repented that he did not have enough faith in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the initial period after taking refuge. And for this reason, he always brought his son in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to demand or beg for something. He repented his insatiable greed. Once he implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to give blessings to his son’s eyes. But the guru said, “Take it easy! His life had just been brought back. It takes time and cannot happen so quickly. Attend more pujas and he will be able to see sooner or later.” This teaching had pacified his mind, as he had always worried about  his son’s blindness in the future – How would his son live on like that? Later he realized that this teaching was the non-outflow wisdom of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

The next day after his son passed away, his neighbor dreamed of him singing happily as usual, and he told his neighbor that he was all right. The heart of his entire family had been set right and well taken care of by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Nearly three months had passed since their son passed away when he dreamed of the child for the first time. He also remembered that the first time his wife took their son along to attend a puja abroad, he started missing him the second day after they left Taiwan. But this time it took three months for him to meet his son in his dream.

Here’s roughly what he dreamed of : he boarded a big bus, which, as it traveled, made a lot of stops with many people getting on and off. Suddenly the bus came to a stop where everyone should get their ID ready for inspection. He didn’t have any ID with him and was afraid of being taken off the bus. So he started visualizing the guru. Of course as a result nothing happened to him and the bus continued its journey.  But then the driver also got off the bus and the bus continued moving forward. Finally, it came to a stop and soon after he got off the bus, he saw his son singing and playing happily as usual. He walked over and got closer to his son. All of a sudden his son deliberately grasped him with his left hand, with their two pairs of eyes looking into each other. After that, the boy stood up and continued to play. And then, he woke up. At the time he came to realize, profoundly, the teaching of wisdom given by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The “forever” he was thinking about was this short lifetime right now, while Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took care of the disciples for life after life. Even though he might use up all the most wonderful words in the world, he would not be able to fully express his gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

After performing the Phowa for their son, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still showed great concern about them and asked a Dharma brother to forward the message that they should not stop coming to the Buddhist Center to make full prostrations. He repented that he let his greed and slackness take over persistence and stopped giving back the resources to sentient beings as he had promised. Thereby he had broken the Samaya Precept. Even though he had witnessed so much of the compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as well as the greatness of Buddhism, he failed to eliminate his greediness.

He repented that when he was a volunteer, he was arrogant, difficult to communicate with, and went his own way. His profession was in the execution and planning of various types of activities. As a volunteer in the Buddhist Center, he often did things with arrogance, knowing only to criticize others and failing to express gratitude to sentient beings and the guru. Selfish as he was, he always haggled over what he did and carefully calculated his own interest.

In 2008 when he attended the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness held at the Taipei Arena for the first time, he felt the incomparable stateliness and auspiciousness of the event. He admired the amicable attitude of the staff and the professional service that they provided. For an event with over 10,000 people participating, the most difficult task was the arrangement of the entry and exit routes. But the believers could quickly find their seats on that day, giving him the impression that obviously a lot of careful planning was conducted by the implementing unit. Such discipline in the event management was something that he had only seen in the military. His colleagues in this profession all knew that the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness was the biggest puja with the most attendees in the country. Had he not joined the volunteers’ team, he would not have the opportunity to learn about it. He repented his arrogance, ignorance and selfishness, and in the future, would cherish the opportunity to serve and learn in the Buddhist Center with humbleness. Furthermore, the whole event was under the leadership of the wisdom of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and he was just someone running errands.

With deep gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he prayed sincerely to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and accepted all karmic retribution wholeheartedly with a firm belief in cause and effect. He took the responsibility for all the faults accumulated throughout his past lives and expressed his willingness to repay such debts in this life time, so that he could be set free from life and death and break reincarnation. He also repented that he had always enjoyed finding birds’ nests in the mountain since his childhood, and cruelly brought back chicks whose feathers were not grown to raise them at home, breaking up countless families in order to satisfy his personal desire. He had now accepted his karmic retribution and sincerely repented to these birds that are also part of sentient beings. He had attacked the hives of bees and ant hills, caught countless fish and shrimp, and killed innumerable other animals such as cicadas, frogs, and snakes. He repented to these insects and animals.

He repented that he had deceived customers, sold counterfeit goods, been greedy about his personal gains, smoked and drunk, abused drugs, stolen, gambled, cheated and defrauded others, taken others’ money through dishonest means, and eaten meat of countless sentient beings. He now resolved to never commit such wrong acts again. He repented that he failed to be a responsible person, forcing his wife to undergo four abortions, committing killing of four lives and deserving to die. He was willing to bear the karmic retribution resulting from killing. He sincerely prayed for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to liberate those innocent infant spirits. He repented always being self-righteous, arrogant and egotistic without knowing to mend his ways in the past.

Finally he vowed to follow His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche life after life. He sincerely prayed that the guru have good health, keep turning the Dharma wheel, and Buddhism will flourish eternally.

Then, all attendees sat silently until the puja ended.
