His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Puja Teachings

March 4, 2012

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei, leading the attendees in chanting the Great Six-Syllable Mantra.

Before the puja, a female disciple first thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving her the opportunity to share her experience of being saved and helped by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Due to marriage problems, the disciple has been away from home for 35 years and has no I.D. with her. Since taking refuge under Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she has wanted to follow the guru and attend pujas abroad but has not been able to do so because she has no ID or passport.

When the 60th birthday of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was coming near in 2006, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was preparing to take with him a group of 500 disciples to India to celebrate His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s birthday. Though with no ID, she still wanted to go along very badly and went to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. For four times Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not see her. On the fifth time, it was a very cold day, and when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw her standing outside the entrance, the guru told another disciple to let her into the café next door and wait there so that she wouldn’t catch a cold in the cold wind.

That day, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received her, who repented all her faults to the guru and implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help her with her problem of having no ID. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche warned her, “You know your own faults now. Just don’t commit them again in the future!” And then the guru told her to find someone to help her with the ID.

For over a few dozen years, the disciple’s daughter has been trying to resolve the issue of her ID by consulting with many government departments, but to no avail. But when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed her to find someone to help her, it so happened that some people turned up on their own to help her, and it took just three hours to take care of the forms. She got her ID in four days. The problem that has been troubling her was finally resolved! Immediately she asked Sino Travel Services to help her with application of her passport, and immediately enrolled herself as a member of the congratulatory group which will go and join His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to celebrate his birthday. She also became a member of the greeting group that went to welcome Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as the guru was coming out of the retreat, and has since been able to successfully participate in all the pujas held abroad. If it had not been for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing and help, she would never have been able to get her ID. She was very grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Last September, the disciple enrolled in the Tibet Touring group, and was able to go and pay pilgrimage to Drikung Thil Monastery in Tibet without any altitude sickness. She even climbed up to the gilded roof of the monastery and climbed down safely. All of this was the result of the blessing and protection by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At the age of 83, she believed that no other travel agency would venture to permit her to go along. She was indeed very thankful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

She would have gone in 2002. Thanks to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing she is able to live to this day and follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in learning and practicing Buddhism.

She was making a public repentance that when she was a kid she went fishing for fish and shrimp and brought them home to eat; when she was young she stole bamboos from other people to use as fire wood; she dug up earthworms to feed the chickens and ducks, which she raised and then killed for food; she attempted suicide, and assisted other people in drowning a puppy in a river. She wished that all of them could be liberated by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

She hoped that in her remaining years she could always follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in learning and practicing Buddhism. In the end, she expressed her gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for founding the travel agency and the Chinese Medicine Clinic, and she thanked Sino Travel Services for providing the excellent service, and the medical practitioners and nurses in the Chinese Medicine Clinic for their treatment and help.

She prayed for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to have good health and live a long life and the Dharma wheel to keep turning.

Then another disciple who took refuge on September 11, 2011 went onto the stage to share her experience of taking refuge and the latest happenings.

At the beginning of 2011 just as she was pondering over the next 10 years of her life, there was the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami off the Pacific coast on March 11. The disasters scenes came one after another about the aftermath, which made her feel the fragility of life and the impermanence of worldly things. Nothing in the world is constant. So she made up her mind: the next 10 years should be different from the last 10 years and she would decide on her own what she could do instead of waiting for someone else to tell her. She hoped that she would be able to help more people and set out to make arrangement so that she could execute the plan based on this idea, e.g., discuss work content and resignation with the boss.

In fact, since four years ago she had been attending the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche every year. Back then she felt that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very special. In June of 2011, she attended the Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgon Memorial Grand Puja presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which impressed her as a whole different experience and made her feel that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching on the Dharma throne is the teaching for life. So she wanted to participate the Sunday puja presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

As she was kneeling down in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her mind was all blank, unable to squeeze out one word of the speech that she had prepared. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her why she would like to attend the puja, her reply was, “Because it feels good to attend Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s puja.” “Feels good?” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche looked at her, and she looked back at the guru, her mind still a total blank. It seemed like a long time had passed, but it also seemed that it was just a few seconds before she could squeeze two Chinese characters that mean “Peaceful.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her, “You could feel peaceful simply by looking at the ocean.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wanted her to go back and think about why she would like to attend the puja. In one month and a half that followed, she went to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche five times, asking to be permitted to attend the puja. On the fifth time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed that she might attend the Sunday puja and take refuge.

She said frankly that looking back at this period, it was not that she did not want to give up her desire to request permission to participate in the puja. She could not understand at the beginning – Why is it that she was not permitted to attend the puja even when she had nothing to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for help, unlike other people who implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for permission to attend the puja because they had something to ask the guru for help? As she was trying to search for an answer, she kept reading the book “Happiness and Suffering” and the website of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. She would think about it whenever she had time. Just after the third “Failed Attempt,” it came to her that she might not have the causal condition to attend the puja! But she wanted to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for this period of “thinking” made her want to learn Buddhism. So she made sure that she should do just that whether she could attend the puja or not.

She went to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the fourth time just like that. She reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche why she would like to attend the puja. Previously she only wanted to have something external to depend on. But in fact, learning Buddhism was something that required her to change her inner heart. She expressed her gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for allowing her to think it through. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche nodded his head compassionately, saying that “It is nothing. Don’t mention it.” Then the guru began to ask her whether she had the experience of learning Buddhism before, and so on. In the end, the guru asked her whether she had told her parents about attending the puja. She shook her head. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then advised her, “Don’t assume that you’re a grown up and do not need to consult with your parents. Whether they agree or not is another matter.” Finally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her not to be anxious, as the guru had not died yet. She nodded her head and went back, knowing that she could only come to seek an audience again after talking it over with her parents.

Next, she wanted to share some of the latest happenings in her life. But before she did that, she first thanked two Dharma brothers. One of them is the Dharma brother who borrowed the sutra books on behalf of everyone from other temples, and the other is a Dharma brother who had a stroke not long ago. Due to the causal conditions with which he had shown 100% faith in the guru, thereby everyone had the opportunity to listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious teachings on death. Of course all of this was possible thanks to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. At the puja of early February, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stated on the Dharma throne, “Your heart is as cold as ice!” This made her realize that she must repent her indifference to what was happening around and examine herself: 1) “Taking it for granted” that she was able to recite the Buddhist sutras after they were borrowed without thinking how they were borrowed. 2) “Taking it for granted” that she was able to listen to the auspicious teachings, as it would not be possible if there had not been enough of various causal conditions. 3) Before that Sunday puja, she had attended two 2-hour evening prayer sessions already. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not said “Your heart is as cold as ice,” she would still have thought that everything would be fine if she followed the instruction of her Dharma brothers and came to the evening prayer sessions without the need to ask many questions. But if she had shown any concern, she would have had a different state of mind when she came to attend the evening prayers. 4) That night upon returning home she kept thinking about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s “Your heart is as cold as ice!” And then she suddenly remembered what happened on the early morning three days ago. She was in a hurry and found that two men were fighting under the arcade just as she arrived at the bus stop. She was so frightened that she didn’t want to wait for the bus. Instead she ran away from the scene without doing anything about their fight. When she thought about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s “Your heart is as cold as ice,” wasn’t that about herself? There were few people on the street in the early morning. But she ran off after seeing what was going on without even bothering to call the police. What would happen if either or both of the men were wounded or even worse? At that moment she was quite upset with herself, feeling sorry for the two men. Furthermore, she was repenting how her heart had become as cold as ice. Her way of learning Buddhism had got her into such a state that she had formed “vicious affinity” with sentient beings rather than “virtuous affinity” with them! So a few days after that experience just as she was walking out of the MRT station, she saw a group of youngsters fighting and chasing each other in front of the restaurant nearby. This time, she dialed “911” at once without any hesitation, of course.

It had been six months since the time when she started to attend the puja and took refuge. She was very thankful to the guru, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as sentient beings, for giving her the opportunity in this life to be able to take refuge under Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Then a female disciple expressed her gratitude to Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving her the opportunity to make public repentance and praise the guru, and share her experience in which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped her eldest daughter, her father, and herself.

She and her eldest daughter took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in November 2003. The whole thing originated from the spring time of that year when her eldest daughter was preparing for college entrance examinations. As busy as she was, her daughter had a schedule that was turned upside down completely. When she came back home, her daughter would be sleeping, who would get up in the middle of the night to study. But her daughter’s grade was half as good as it used to be. One day her daughter told her that she had not slept for two weeks, and still could not sleep after seeing a Chinese medical practitioner and a Western medical doctor, taking sleeping pills, being treated with acupuncture, and going through aromatherapy. Someone even claimed that he could see that there was a ghost following her daughter. Moreover, her daughter claimed to be able to connect with the human spirit. So they started to consult with one spiritual altar or temple after another. Some said that they couldn’t help anymore after performing a few rituals. One of them asked for a service fee of NT$20,000 and no guarantee would come with it.

During that time her eldest daughter would kneel down in front of the statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and cry in the middle of the night. One early evening her eldest daughter swallowed a large number of sleeping pills to kill herself. Normally at this time there would be nobody at home but her youngest daughter came back home earlier than usual that evening because she caught a cold. The younger sibling, upon seeing her sister vomiting, immediately notified her and her husband to hurry back home and rush her eldest daughter to the hospital. The doctor’s diagnosis was that her eldest daughter had schizophrenia. She and her husband needed to take care of her daughter in turn, as there was no early warning sign when one wanted to commit suicide.

One of her colleagues often mentioned the stories which told about the liberation of sentient beings by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the guru under whom her colleague took refuge. She also retold such stories to her family. The colleague invited her to attend the puja that were hosted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and presided over by Druwang Rinpoche. She went to attend these events with her daughter and second elder sister, and right in the afternoon her eldest daughter took the initiative in saying that she would like to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. On the following Saturday when they went to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the guru blessed her daughter with the manifestation of the wrathful yidam and with chanting the mantra, and bestowed upon her eldest daughter a vajra knot, saying that she would be fine. Then they enrolled themselves as attendees of the Chod Pujas. She had never seen any Buddhist practitioner who offered help without accepting the red envelope of cash. So one week later she made up her mind to implore to take refuge. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not immediately take her in, saying that he needed sometime to observe her.

As they started attending the puja, her eldest daughter showed the look of dementia, drooling, eyes slanted upward, and lips hardened up, with the inability to sleep. But her condition had been improving as she kept attending the pujas and acting in accordance with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings. After they had made full prostration 110,000 times and a pilgrimage trip to Tibet in 2005, all was fine, and they thought that the illness was gone. Her daughter did not take medicine any more, nor did she follow the guru’s teachings, and one day she attempted to commit suicide again. At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not seeing any disciples as they did not act according to his teachings. So her husband, who had not yet taken refuge at the time, took her place to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. This in fact created the causal condition which led to his taking refuge in 2006.

Then they followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche abroad on a trip in which they had an audience with His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. As the blessed reward kept being accumulated, the condition was improving again. In 2008, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche invited His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to Taiwan. On her way to the venue to welcome His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, she was riding a motorcycle which slipped and fell, but only her foot was wounded as a result of lessened effect of heavy karmic retribution.

Her foot wound was treated in the traditional Chinese medical and western medical facilities covered under her healthcare insurance, but the stasis lingered. The doctor told her that there might be the need for amputation. Another Dharma brother, who had a very serious car accident before but was helped and saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, recommended her to the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic. What was unbelievable was that the stasis was dispersed on the very first day there. Normally a medicinal patch would cause itching after two hours of application, but no itching occurred 10 hours after the application of the medicinal patch provided by the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic. She was very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for founding this clinic for all the suffering sentient beings.

The car accident awakened her and got her into pondering – Why did this happen to her after practicing Buddhism for so many years? It turned out that she had been working with a travel agency for more than a dozen years, taking care of the insurance issue of travel agencies. Some domestic travel agencies wanted them to issue receipts for non-existent transactions so that they could use them to report as expenses. Her colleagues and the company had been doing so all the time, thinking that it was part of customer service. Who would have imagined that doing so was illegal? So she had the thought of quitting since that happened, to give up a job with quite a decent income. Though she was now living an honest life trying to make ends meet, she still had to repay the debts due to many years of making inappropriate gains.

She repented that she set up traps to catch many rats in exchange for bonus when she was working at the mall before, and then taught her husband to kill the rats with hot water; that she killed cockroaches and mosquitoes; that she froze live shrimp and clams to death, resulting in her suffering from joint pain now. Before, her father taught her that they could eat all types of animals. He even killed a crippled dog to eat and she also ate a piece. She now was repenting on her father’s behalf. In addition, she had not been acting in accordance with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings, resulting in her family not realizing the benefit of Buddhism. Her father passed away on February 29, but that day she did not have the causal condition to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to liberate her father. Not having received the message that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be seeing believers, she lived in anxiety for those few days. Yesterday (March 3), she thought about making full prostration 500 times to help her father accumulate blessed reward. About five minutes later she got the notice that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be seeing the believers. That was miraculous.

On Saturday she sought an audience with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to implore the guru to help liberate her father to be reborn in the Pure Land. The guru, as compassionate as always, immediately performed the Dharma to protect her father’s consciousness, so that her father would not be falling into the Three Evil Realms. Her anxious and nervous heart was calmed down. She was full of gratitude, repenting that she had not mended her way in changing her temper and greediness after learning Buddhism for so many years. She was determined to act according to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings, to closely watch her mind, and not to let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche worry about them anymore. She also asked all her Dharma brothers to learn from her lesson.

Finally, she prayed for the Dharma teachings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to remain steadfast in the world eternally, bringing benefit to all sentient beings in the ten directions of the Dharma Realm.

Upon ascending to the Dharma throne, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees in chanting the Great Six-Syllable Mantra for quite a while. After that all believers and disciples attending the puja kneeled down and made prostration to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Then they all sincerely paid their respect as the guru descended from the Dharma throne.
