His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Puja Teachings

January 29, 2012

In the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center of Taipei, ordained practitioners led all attendees in reciting “The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows”.

Prior to the puja, one of the female disciples gave thanks to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as well as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for their help.

Last November (2011), before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to India to conduct a puja, the female disciple had a car accident in Taiwan. She had just left work and was returning home on North Highway #2 when the rear wheels of the car suddenly blew out. The car proceeded to go out of control and spun into the other lanes of traffic, ultimately crashing into the center railing of the fast lane. When the car stopped, because it was facing into traffic, she could see streams of cars rushing past her. Terrified, she started shouting, “Save me Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche! Save me Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!” over and over again. At the same time, she searched her car for a cell phone that had flown away during the accident. She wanted to call the insurance company and her family to deal with the proceedings right away, but she couldn’t find the phone the whole time.

She gave many thanks for the blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for while she was yelling “Save me Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!” a police car suddenly appeared in front of her. She stopped the police car and borrowed a cell phone from the policeman in order to contact her family and her insurance company. Just then, a tow truck also showed up and stopped in front of her in order to prevent further accidents. The policeman told her that he couldn’t stay long because he was escorting a prisoner in his car, but he had already helped her arrange communications, and the national highway police would be arriving soon. It only took about 15 minutes after the start of the accident for it to be completely resolved. Furthermore, although it had been raining continuously for a week, the rain subsided during the traffic accident, allowing her to safely deal with the proceedings after the accident; the national highway police said that since she had not hit any other cars, there was no need to go to the station and fill out a police report, but he asked the tow truck driver to tow the car right away. The tow truck driver could not believe the situation, and said that she must be extremely lucky not to have hit any of the many cars speeding down the highway. All four of the car’s tires were ruptured, and the airbag had deployed, but the disciple was completely unharmed, aside from some aching in her body. The amount of time it took for the accident to be cleared up was astonishingly short. She knew that this was all because of the blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that allowed her to dodge the heavy evil karma and be spared from an untimely death.

After the business of the accident was settled, the disciple hurried to the babysitter’s house, who was also a Dharma brother, to pick up her child. She told the babysitter about her experience of being saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The babysitter responded by saying that, ordinarily, the child rarely prostrated himself in front of the Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but that particular afternoon he had prostrated many times in front of the photo, and kept saying, “Thank you grandfather! Thank you grandfather!” On hearing this, the disciple was utterly ashamed, and repented for not learning Buddhism diligently, apologizing to all of the sentient beings. She repented to the guru for being irreverent, and for not being whole-hearted or focused during her eight years of taking refuge under the guru. She also repented for neglecting the homework given to her by the guru, which she claimed was because of spending her time hard at work or caring for her child- but in reality she was being lazy and looking for an excuse not to do it. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed: Ordinarily, you think you are having a good life, and you don’t work hard learning Buddhism, correcting your behavior, and looking deeply into your mind. Often the guru and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are far away on the horizon and, only when karma appears do you think about the guru and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Only then do you understand that Buddha Dharma is auspicious and great. Now she realizes the respect in her heart towards the guru does not compare to that of a two-year old child.

She repented for not having mercy and compassion, for always using Buddhism to examine other people, for judging herself leniently but others strictly, and for ignoring other people’s points of view and acting selfishly. She repented for poorly observing the Five Precepts and Ten Meritorious Acts, spending the day making divisive speech with her coworkers, faulting other people, criticizing the faults of others, listening to other people’s gossip, and talking negatively about her place of work. She repented for times when she was young, when she was unhappy if there was no meat to eat, and she often ate dishes with generous portions of meat and fish. She would eat any animal, whether it swam in the sea, flew in the sky, or walked on the earth. Even when she had soup, she always ate stewed bone soup, and then sucked the bone marrow juices from the bones. Because of this, she developed scoliosis when she was in high school. Once, after the school’s lunch break, she had the experience of being unable to sit up straight. She often couldn’t stand because of her back pain. She knew this was all because of her killing karma. She gave thanks for the blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which allowed her to use the discomfort in her body to avoid falling into the Three Evil Realms, and furthermore made it possible for her to be vigilant about herself. Life is filled with hardship and little joy, and only when strictly following in the footsteps of and obeying the guru, striving to learn Buddhism, and improving one’s behavior, can one have the opportunity to pass into the Pure Land and obtain truly great joy.

Last September, she and her family followed His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to Tibet. Upon exiting the Lhasa airport, just as she was boarding a tour bus, she started to react to the high altitude. She had a splitting headache and felt nauseous and was unable to take care of her child. After arriving at the hotel, she immediately went to lie down in bed, and couldn’t get out of bed or walk. That night, while the Dharma brothers and His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were having their meal, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the team leader, is there anyone who hasn’t arrived for the meal? After the team leader replied, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said: “Grown-ups like this are not feeling well, it’s probably psychological!” and instructed the travel agency to request that the hotel bring hot rice soup to the rooms of the disciples who had not arrived for the meal.

She gave thanks for the compassionate blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When her husband and child returned from the dinner with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to the hotel room, she was already able to get out of bed, walk around, and eat. However, her husband had started to develop altitude sickness. All of the symptoms – dizziness, vomiting and fever – appeared one after another. Her husband soon had to depend on an IV drip and had to take in oxygen to survive, but she was already able to care for the child alone, and went with other Dharma brothers on the trip which was arranged by the travel agency. They followed Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche four thousand meters above sea level to the Drikung Thil Monastery. While her husband was on the IV, he heard the attending doctor comment that the situation was unimaginable. He said he had never encountered such a group, which contained over 200 people, who after arriving in Tibet, less than only one-tenth had developed altitude sickness. Furthermore, the number of those needing to take oxygen was even lower. He was astonished that this could happen, especially since the travel group included young, old, and sick people. It was surely the blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that allowed everyone to arrive safe and sound.

She expressed her gratitude once more to Most Venerable Vajra Guru Rinpoche for allowing her to take refuge and to practice and learn the orthodox Dharma. In 2003, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to the hospital and gave a blessing to her mother. Her mother was in the final stages of cancer, and was dying. The vajra of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was placed on top of her mother’s head and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began chanting mantra. The disciple, who had never encountered Buddhism before, felt completely stunned. Her mother had long ago gone into a coma and had no reaction to physical contact, but when she was blessed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her whole body began to convulse. This was completely unfathomable. After giving the blessing, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her father that the mother would pass away in the afternoon of the next day, and her mother’s final wish was that her two daughters also take refuge. The sisters were reluctant to take refuge, thinking that learning Buddhism was not for young people. They did not realize that if it were not for their dying mother’s last wish and imploration, they, having such heavy evil karma, would not have enough blessed rewards to see such a rare treasure, let alone take refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Additionally, her mother was very fortunate to obtain the auspicious Phowa performed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

She remembered vividly that, after passing away, her mother’s mouth was open and her body was stiff. After His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the Phowa for her mother, all of the auspicious signs appeared one after another. Her mother’s body became soft, her cheeks became rosy as if she was just sleeping, and her crown charkra became warm. After cremation, her mother’s skull appeared in the sarira clusters. The blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who is the same as the Budhha, allowed her mother to pass into the Pure Land, be relieved from afflictions, and obtain joy.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche disregards his own life for the benefit of all sentient beings. Every disciple’s life and family has been saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Therefore, she needs to look more deeply into her own heart, implement Buddhism in her daily life, and work hard to correct her bad habits. She should not become a burden on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, so the guru can bring benefits to more suffering sentient beings in the void. By doing so, she is repaying both the Buddha’s and the guru’s grace. Finally, she prays for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to have good health, turn the wheel of Dharma eternally, and abide in the world for a long time.

Later, a mother and child who had already taken refuge shared how His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave blessings to the son. The son explained that two weeks earlier he had a flare up of his sickness, and he expressed gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again for saving him. Furthermore, he repented for his wrongdoings, saying that he would definitely correct them. At the time of his flare up a few days earlier, he had accidentally kicked, hit, and bitten other Dharma brothers. He felt sorry, and thanked the Dharma brothers for carrying him to the mandala during puja to receive the auspicious blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The female disciple explained that her son had fallen ill with a rare disease. Everyone who suffered from the same disease had to take medicine for the rest of their life to treat the illness. It was only her son who did not have to take medicine any longer, after meeting His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche 8 years ago. Moreover, he rarely had flare-ups. This was all due to the blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. If not for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she could not imagine what their life would have become. They gave their deepest gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

On a Saturday two weeks before, her son had a flare-up, but compared with the past, this time the symptoms were relatively stable and he didn’t lose consciousness. On top of that, his past medical reports all showed that after regaining consciousness, he would quickly be allowed to leave the hospital. Therefore, the doctor decided that her son’s condition was good and that he could leave the hospital on Wednesday. She believed that if not for the blessing of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he absolutely could not have left the hospital this early. They gave great thanks to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the mother expressed her deepest apologies to the Dharma brothers for the trouble caused by her son’s conduct at the Buddhist Center.

At 2:00 PM, the General Director of the Glorious Jewel Buddhism Culture Exchange Association made the following announcement:

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has discovered that none of us has the root capacity for learning Vajrayana Buddhism. On top of that, before the puja on Chinese New Year’s Day, one of the disciples spread the word to the other disciples to gather and kneel and implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to conduct the Thirty-Five Buddhas Repentance. As a result, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has decided to not let everyone listen to the guru’s Dharma recording at the Buddhist Center, because it is useless for everyone to listen to it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has instructed that during the puja today, the ordained disciple will lead everyone in reciting “The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows”.

At the year-end puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche already stated that during the puja on New Year’s Day, the Thirty-Five Buddhas Repentance would not be conducted because everyone only apologized but never repented. However, one disciple spread the idea to many of the other disciples that on New Year’s Eve at the Buddhist Center, everyone should kneel and implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to perform the Thirty-Five Buddhas Repentance. This type of behavior is a threat and an intimidation to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Disciples of Vajrayana must attach the highest importance to their guru. Besides, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang also expressed his hopes for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to rest more and not be exhausted. The disciple who had originally started this act completely disobeyed the teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during the puja. This type of threat to the guru is very bad, and it is not how a disciple of Vajrayana should conduct himself. I hope that everyone will learn from this example.

The General Director explained that the copies of “The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows” for today’s reading were borrowed from another place. He hoped that everyone would treasure using them, turn the pages carefully, and after finishing, assist in retrieving the copies and packing them in boxes for returning.

Subsequently, the ordained disciples led the participants to make three prostrations to the Dharma photos of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as well as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on the mandala. Then they recited “The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows” with reverence and repentance. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often teaches from “The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows”. When the disciples reverently recited the Sutra, they remembered the guru’s precious Buddhist teachings and devoted instruction, and they felt extremely shamed in their hearts. Many people couldn’t stop crying. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often exemplifies himself as to how a disciple of Vajrayana should serve his guru, and uses his own experience of actual practice and true realization to teach and discipline the disciples. Moreover, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches diligently and always gives the disciples compassionate blessings, no matter what time of day. To be born in this Age of Degenerate Dharma, disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center are very fortunate to have this rare encounter with a guru of such great merits. Every word and every sentence of the guru’s teachings are as precious as treasure. Therefore, when the disciples failed to act in accordance with the guru’s teaching, they lost the causal conditions to listen to the precious Dharma recording. Everyone was grateful for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s punishment, for his showing the disciples their mistakes, making the disciples deeply reflect upon themselves, and giving them the chance for introspection and to correct themselves.
