His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 82 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

April 4, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei and gave a teaching about the meaning and preliminary practices of the Fivefold Path of Mahamudra of Drikung Kagyu Lineage. With scrupulous explanations, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed on proper attitudes to learn Buddha Dharma. Additionally, a few sections of the Sutra of Great Liberation were also particularly explained to attendees who are the beginners on the Buddhist path.

The Fivefold Path of Mahamudra is the essence of Tantras and the essence of authentic practices. In Drikung Kagyu Lineage, it is also known as a profound dharma method of practicing meditation that is beyond ordinary understanding. Practices of the Fivefold Path of Mahamudra including the following: (1) Generating vows of Bodhichitta, (2) Yoga of primary deity, (3) Yoga of the Guru, (4) Meditation of Mahamudra, and (5) Dedication to Bodhichitta. Prior to genuine learning of Buddhism, one has to accumulate sufficient provisions. The meaning of “provisions” of learning Buddhism doesn’t relate to the monetary sense which is unimportant and ephemeral. Instead, the provisions of learning Buddhism refer to cultivating one’s compassion and wisdom. What is most important for you to achieve by practicing the Uncommon Four Preliminary Practices is to accumulate these two provisions: compassion and wisdom. One with wisdom but lack of compassion can’t achieve anything. On the other hand, one with compassion but no wisdom can’t fully understand his guru’s teachings. Without these two provisions, one hardly can keep on learning Buddhism. One single distracting thought will prevent one from attending to pujas or learning Buddha Dharma. For all sentient beings, performing the Fivefold Path of Mahamudra is the most efficient method to accumulate these provisions. If one can obtain sufficient compassion and wisdom, it will be possible to achieve Buddhahood and benefit sentient beings.

There are four ways to cultivate one’s wisdom: (1) following and attending to the guru, (2) paying obeisance to the guru, (3) giving pleasure to the guru, and (4) concentrating on the guru’s words.

Following one’s guru doesn’t mean to accompany the guru twenty-four hours a day. Rather, it means one should have an absolute faith in his guru without slightest doubt. As a lay Buddhist practitioner of Han people in this lifetime, it’s extremely difficult for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to attain the level of a Rinpoche and learn Tantras of Tibetan Buddhism. For Tibetans to accept a Han person is already not easy, not to mention for them to listen to a Han Rinpoche. The accomplishment of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche isn’t simply achieved by the practices of this life, but rather by the practices of several previous lifetimes.

Attending to one’s guru means striving to fulfill any tasks and matters requested by or related to his guru. For instance, one disciple claimed to be too busy in his own business to sell the best Japanese food products that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had made great efforts to search in Japan and import to Taiwan. This disciple’s conduct proved his lack of attending to his guru and his lack of understanding that all Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s deeds are for the sake of propagating Buddhism, not to mention that this disciple can make profit from selling Japanese food products. The matter that another elderly disciple, neglecting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice, insisted on going to the United States to visit her son has also very much worried Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The way to give pleasure to one’s guru is exemplified by how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can always think in the view of Rinpoche’s root guru, H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche, and share worries of H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche. Moreover, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would provide the most comprehensive and harmonious suggestions for H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche to make the decisions.

Moreover, in this year 2010, H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche will soon come to Taiwan to conduct the upcoming grand puja. In 2008 and 2009, H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche had visited Taiwan twice in the hope to coordinate all of Drikung Kagyu centers for the sake of holding the grand puja. As the opinions among Drikung Kagyu centers are different, H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche was concerned about the progress of preparation a lot. Upon completing the retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at once reported to H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche about the progress of the approaching grand puja in Taiwan. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s thinking in all aspects in the view of H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche has greatly pleased His Holiness.

But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche even had to take care of the problems regarding the management of the building, where the center is located. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been continuously demonstrating you how to attend Guru’s affairs. But you always fear of being punished or reprimanded because you are always worrying of not doing well and as a result being scolded or punished. Actually, fearing of being reprimanded is the most evil thought. How could you be a disciple if you never think in the view of Guru but always do things anger, or never do things that please your Guru.

Sometimes after puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would ask disciples what enlightenment Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed during today’s puja. If disciples do not concentrate on Guru’s words, they would have no answer, no idea, and even do not remember at all. There was a disciple who heard that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said the economic conditions would be in recession in the 2nd half of 2010 so he hurried to try to sell his house; nevertheless, at usual time he does not make offerings though he has money. It can be seen that this disciple only selectively pays attention to Guru’s sayings.

The Buddhist teachings Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche imparts on the Dharma seat, the acts and speeches of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in daily lives are all the manifestation of Buddha-Dharma. Keep Guru’s each single word in mind. Do not think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is ordinary as you and still needs to eat and sleep, and you can know the state of Buddhist practice Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained. After the perfect completion of the retreat practice this time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reported his achieved state during the retreat practice to His Holiness Chestang Rinpoche. Merely five sentences in total to finish the conversation between the Gugu and the disciple. And then, His Holiness Chestang Rinpoche could know that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has really attained the achievement. It is because His Holiness Chestang Rinpoche has already experienced the stages, therefore His Holiness Chestang Rinpoche just can tell as long as hearing it. As for you, who have not attained it, are not able to understand the state Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche attained. Hence, do not be self-righteously conjecture about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s acts and speeches, by which will lead to its karmic effects.

The difference between Exoteric Buddhism and Esoteric Buddhism enlightened by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche today is not saying that Exoteric Buddhist doctrines are not important. Without practices of the foundation of Exoteric Buddhist doctrines, one is not able to proceed to practice tantric Dharmas. However, it takes 3 great eons, which is such a long time that even could not be figured out by human time, to attain Buddhahood through the practices by way of Exoteric Buddhist doctrines, that include: learning and practicing the Buddha’s sayings, the commentaries written by Mahasiddhas, the practice experiences of Yidams and Gurus from previous generations, or the teachings of a realized Guru who has seen the nature.

Cultivation of Exoteric Buddhist doctrines is to clean a container full of contaminations and thereafter the nectar, namely Buddha-Dharma mentioned here, can be received. It is for letting you become a Dharma vessel available to receive the teachings. Our hearts are contaminated by greediness, hatred, ignorance, and various kinds of karma created from past lives. Through cultivation of the four ordinary preliminary practices, that is, the acts of blessings, one could learn the impermanence, the karmic cause and effect, the suffering of being reincarnated in the cycle birth and death, and the difficulty of obtaining human body. In doing so, the container full of contaminations will be purified. Some people think being irreverent to Guru does not matter, by which indicates that they do not believe in the law of cause and effect. It is stated in the Sutra: “The Buddhist path can be perfect only if the human path is perfect.” This phrase is not saying that one needs to be a good man or act out the moral standards of Confucius for attaining Buddhahood. If it were, the western people could not have the opportunity of attaining Buddhahood. The truth the phrase refers is that merely the beings born in the human realm have the opportunity of listening to Buddhist doctrines, be able to start to the cultivation, and then keep going on the Buddhist path to finally attain Buddahood.

As for tantric Dharmas, through the four extraordinary preliminary practices, the essence of gold can be refined and let the gold’s inherent sparkle be gloriously radiant. The nature of beings have been covered since past lives will be refined, just like the gold, though practices of tantric Dharmas. And then practitioners can soon attain Buddhahood. Through cultivation of Fivefold Path of Mahamudra, practitioners can see Buddha’s four bodies: Dharmakaya, Samboghakaya, Nirmanakaya and self-nature of Buddha. They can also achieve Buddhahood in this lifetime, which here means attainment of the state of Dharmakaya, or of another state in realizing the truth that oneself, like all beings, inherently possesses the pure Buddha nature. This is also can be considered to achieve Buddhahood in this lifetime.

The four ordinary preliminary practices have to be practiced first prior to starting to cultivate the four extraordinary preliminary practices of Fivefold Path of Mahamudra. The four ordinary preliminary practices include: 1. Impermanence 2. The law of cause and effect, as well as causes and conditions 3. Reincarnation of the cycle of birth and death is suffering 4. Human body is hard to obtain. Human heart is contaminated by greediness, hatred, ignorance, and various kinds of karma brought from past lives; thereafter, in the process of Buddhism cultivation, evil karma of past lives would hinder us from listening to Buddha-Dharma and from practicing it. It needs the blessings of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Yidams and Gurus for learning Buddha-Dharma. If one learns Buddhism for self profit instead of gaining liberation from birth and death and benefitting sentient beings, one will not obtain any strength of blessings. Taking refuge is the very beginning of all blessings. One who is unwilling to seek refuge shows no determination to cease evildoing and to practice virtuous deeds, so naturally he will not obtain blessings. The reason you came to this world is that you had not well done Buddhist practices in your last life. If you still do not thoroughly surrender yourself to Guru, you will waste this life again.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened by some sections extracted from “The Sutra of Great Liberation” that was personally transmitted by Buddha Sakyumuni. As the texts are translated from Tibetan to Chinese, the Sutra is rarely spreading out. However, Buddha-Dharma should not be discriminated by areas.

According to the Sutra, in order to eliminate one’s sins and karma through reciting Sutras, rather than reciting it casually, one ought to “believe, respect, write, read, memorize and recite the Sutra”, also, smear the ground with fragrant mud. Solemnize inside with a nice banner, burn wonderful best incense rather than those merely costing Taiwanese dollars in tens for a handful, and pray for the Buddha’s arriving. Then, put on clean clothes after bathing with liquid scent. Liquid scent here is referring to nectar used to sprinkle in order to purify one’s body. Prepare three suits of clothes and change your clothes in different circumstances: one for going to the toilet, one for bathing, and one for reciting the Sutra. None of you meet the standards mentioned in the Sutra yet. Hence, you should no more consider Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara will appear in you dream after you recite Sutras by yourself for a while.

Having made these preparations, one has to “burn incense, make offerings, do prostrations, and show his repentance for six hours by day and night.” ”Every thought of his is free from confusion. Every thought of his is not incorrect. Every thought of his is not distracted. Every thought of his improves hourly. Every thought of his improves daily. Every thought of his generates faith. Every thought of his is joyful. Every though of his is in order. Every thought of his is continual. Every thought of his is profound. Every thought of his is focused. Every thought of his contemplates on his sins. Every thought of his thinks about the Buddhas. Every thought of his thinks about the Dharma. Every thought of his thinks about his guru. Every thought of his thinks about his precepts. Every thought of his thinks about renunciation. Every thought of his thinks about the heavens.” You people are absolutely unable to carry these out. One disciple even teased the guru. The reason lied in that the disciple did not think about the guru. The sins mentioned in the text do not refer to guilty feelings, but any matters that would obstruct your Buddhist learning. A single thought would make you want to quit your Buddhist study. If one’s sins are not eliminated, he will not be able to listen to the Buddhist teachings. Even if he does hear the teachings, he will not be able to take in. Even if he takes in the teachings, he will fail to carry them out.

“If the person recites the sutra, makes prostrations, shows repentance accordingly from the first day till the sixth, repeatedly covers the floor with incense ashes, repeatedly cleanses his body with fragrant water, burns various high-quality incense, and makes offerings sincerely, the repentance from the deepest of his heart will then shock the ten directions.” Only when one is able to achieve all these can he claim to have shown repentance from the deepest of his heart.

Five dreams are stated in the sutra and each of them has a particular meaning. “If the person dreams of himself crossing a large bridge over a gigantic river that night, it can be known that he will definitely gain liberation. If the person dreams of himself in pouring rain from the sky at some time, it can be known that he will definitely become clean and pure. If the person dreams of himself entering a monastic gathering and finding a seat among them, it can be known that he is a genuine Buddhist. If the person dreams of himself entering a stupa or a monastery at some time and seeing a giant Buddhist image and the Bodhisattvas, it can be known that he has entered the correct door. If the person dreams of himself getting fruit to eat, it can be known that he will eventually have the karmic retribution.” The “correct door” refers to the correct door to the Buddhist study, and “the karmic retribution” refers to attaining the Buddhahood. The dreams that occur when you are fast asleep do not count. It is the one that shows up right before you wake up. Nevertheless, the dream you might have tonight will not count, for you have failed to meet all the previous requirements. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was quite surprised upon seeing the description of these dreams in the sutra, for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had dreamed all of the dreams in the past already. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dreamed of himself entering a monastery to see a giant Buddha the next day after taking refuge in Exoteric Buddhism. The order of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche practice is reversed. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche achieves attainments first, and then gets validation from His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and the Buddhist sutras later in time.

In the future, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will explain the Sutra of Great Liberation in details. The content of the sutra is very useful for you beginners, for you have no idea what mistakes you have made.

In fact, the touring to the hell is not real. The Realm of Hells is not a place where you can visit at will. Only two types of beings are able to go to the hell. One is the Bodhisattvas who are salvaging the sentient beings in the hells. The other is those who have fallen into the hell to suffer due to their heavy evil karma. What they see during the tour to the hell is the sentient beings in the Realm of Ghost who died and have not gained rebirth yet. Such beings are able to stay in the world for 1000 years at most. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once saw a ghost who had died two to three hundred years previously.

The hells are not to place any punishment upon you, as other religions claim so. Everything in the hells is derived from the habitual patterns created by the sentient beings. Avici Hell, the most painful and darkest one, is the Hell of No Interval. There is not a single moment of happiness in there. There is no interval for karmic retribution, suffering, time, destiny, and form. Those with heavy hateful thoughts fall into the Fire Hell after death because the hateful and jealous thoughts will make the wrathful fire break out in their hearts. When one falls into the Hell of Fire, he will have to suffer for as long as 5 million years. As to those with heavy greedy thoughts, they will fall into the Hell of Zamhareer. Those who won any prizes have had an experience of drawing in a breath upon learning the news. When greedy people see what they like and want, they, too, will take a deep breath. Therefore, those with greedy thoughts will fall into the Hell of Zamhareer. Recall the time when your greedy thought rose and you were quite attached about getting something. Did you not take in a deep breath?

Do not consider it difficult to fall into the hell. Actually, it is very easy for one to fall into the hell. It merely takes a split second and whoosh you will fall with a single thought. You constantly get angry or hate others. When you get angry or hate others, don’t you feel that a fire is in your heart just like you always say that you have a belly of fires? With fires constantly in you, you are used to being in the fires. When you pass way, you will then have the habit of going toward a place of fires—the Hell of Fire. The sentient beings that have fallen into the Hell of Fire are those who were short-tempered, had hatred toward others, and often felt jealous of others.

Many people on TV talk about how poor women are and how the men mistreat their women. The women’s hatred thereby grows, but no one has ever mentioned that women mistreat men. As a matter of fact, women can mistreat men, too, like some female disciples would hit their husbands. No such news has been reported on TV because the viewers are all female. However, that is why women get their hateful thoughts easily as they watch such programs.

Non-buddhist religions waged war for hundreds of years, because they were all too attached and proud, and thought that their own gods were just the true god. Arrogance is also a kind of evil. Having this kind of evil is enough to let one fall into the realm of hell.

Liberating consciousnesses is not asking or hiring people to recite Buddhist sutras for the deceased people or donating large sums of money to many temples. Many people think that doing these things is equivalent to doing Buddhist matters extensively; in fact, this is not true. It is not true that reciting many Buddhist sutras for a deceased person can liberate the soul of the deceased from the cycles of reincarnations. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also has a religious disciple whose job before was to recite Buddhist sutras, sometimes more than twenty sutras, for the deceased people. Can doing this liberate the consciousnesses of the deceased people? Even the disciple herself still cannot escape from the cycles of rebirth and death, how can she help the deceased people to escape? A person who still has ignorance is impossible to help sentient beings escape from the cycles of reincarnations. Yesterday, there was a believer who came to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to liberate the consciousness of his relative. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him why his father and other family members did not come together with him. The believer replied that they all went to another Buddhist temple. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then told him that a lot of people were like this; each of their family members went to a different famous Buddhist temple separately to do Buddhist rituals and thought that if this Buddhist temple could not help to liberate the deceased family member, there was another Buddhist temple which could. Actually, visiting temples everywhere would not help. It would be better if he could went to the other temples with his family members first! If later he still feels that the liberation of his relative has not done well and still need some help, he and his family members can then come together to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help again. Now many people are used to visit a lot of temples and think that this is equivalent to doing Buddhist rituals extensively. In fact, the Chinese character of “廣” (extensive, wide) means that you have a vast mind; the Chinese character of “事” (matter) means the matter which can help sentient beings to leave the sufferings of reincarnations. Combining both was then the real meaning of doing Buddhist matters extensively.

Some people think if there are a few hundreds of people to recite Buddhist sutras for a deceased person, the deceased person has many virtues and is very fortunate. However, have these few hundreds of people already attained enlightenments? Are they a few hundreds of Arhats? If they are not Arhats, then can such reciting of Buddhist sutras really help to liberate the consciousness of the deceased person from the cycles of rebirth and death? This just makes the funeral scene look very bustling. As a result, this may cause hatred to be generated in the deceased person’s mind. Therefore, when your family member passes away, it is better to let the family relatives recite Buddhist sutras; this will at least have some help to the deceased; at least the sincere hearts and familiar voices of the relatives can let the deceased person have a peace of mind.

There is a Buddhist charity organization known by the public which teach their members to come back to this world to be the member again in their next life. The founder of the organization also wears the monk’s/nun’s clothes to teach Buddha dharma. However, the founder wants the disciples to continue to reincarnate. Such teaching actually is devil’s dharma. Although Bodhisattvas will also come back to this world, that is in a time that after the Bodhisattvas have attained achievements they will then come back to liberate the sentient beings by following their vows.

We should understand that reincarnation is suffering and we should follow a guru who has attained enlightenments on the path and theory of reincarnations. We do not have to wait for the moment of our deaths to start to experience reincarnation; our mood change every day is also a reincarnation. And we should follow a guru who has attained enlightenments on the path and theory of reincarnations in order to really help us to liberate from reincarnations. If we follow a guru who has not yet attained enlightenments and cannot liberate from his own reincarnations, how can the guru teach us to liberate from reincarnations? This is like that a blind person full of ignorance leads a group of blind people to touch an elephant; the leader touches on the elephant’s ivory and thinks that the elephant is pointed; and the followers touch on the elephant’s tail and think that the elephant is slender; their discovery is different from the guru’s; as a result, they can never see clearly the true appearance of the elephant.

Taking refuge is the foundation of learning Buddha dharma. Taking refuge means that you have already determined to break off from the evils, do virtuous deeds, and practice Buddha dharma. There was a believer who came to ask to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s permission to attend the Chod puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him what his objective was to attend the puja. The believer replied, “For liberating from reincarnations.” However, only attending the Chod puja without taking refuge and practicing Buddha dharma cannot let one liberate from reincarnation. Hence, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not grant him the permission to attend the Chod puja.

There is a female disciple who had a serious car accident two years ago. In her coma, she saw an affable elderly; the elderly wanted her to follow him, but she was reluctant to follow him and told him that she wanted to wait and follow her guru. The elderly again transformed himself into a relative with whom the disciple was familiar and wanted to take her away. But she still was only willing to follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Because of this disciple’s faith to the guru, the disciple can now still live in this world well and continue to practice Buddha dharma; otherwise, she would have already been dead earlier. At this moment, by chance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw a male disciple who was turning his head to look for this female disciple. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately reprimanded the disciple. This was the time for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to enlighten us Buddha dharma. This disciple, however, turned his head to see the other disciple. It indicated that he did not concentrate on the guru’s words. The content of this point had just been mentioned by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche earlier and the disciple immediately forgot the point. On the spot, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the mail disciple to take off and return the vest of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center.

A diligent practitioner of the Buddhism would actively, but not passively, confront his life. The Rinpoche mentioned that one of the male disciples has been staying at home all days and put all the responsibilities on his wife. Furthermore, the man had dodges that he has abandoned the worldly affairs. The Rinpoche said the disciple is simply indolent, and continued that he excused his lacking in responsibilities with words that he is following practices of the Buddhism. If the disciple would have truly abandoned the worldly affairs, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could send him to the monastery in India to be ordained as a monk. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche added that the Rinpoche could not impart the vows of Bhikshu to his disciples because the Rinpoche has not been ordained as a monk. And, if send the disciple to the place in Nepal that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took a retreat, how could the disciple endure the extreme hardship even for a couple of days only? How could anyone accomplish all the practices by staying at home all the time?

There are statements in sutras that a converted disciple observes his guru for three years and the guru observes the disciples three years as well. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not grant the teachings on practices of the Four Preliminaries to those who have not taken refuge for three years. Among the disciples, there is some certain male disciple has missed the opportunity this time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted the practices of the Four Preliminaries, while his wife and his daughter had received the teachings. The cause lies in the fact that he had been reluctant to take the refuge in order to evaluate the pros and cons and he would like to become knowing of the truth before his taking refuge. Thus, he missed the opportunity of this time.

Some disciples, who have completed once the ten-thousand full prostrations and are during the course of the second time of the practice, are still focused on counting their number of times only. If they do not change such attitude, their practice would simply become a form of exercise. In that way, such efforts would be futile and only have some minor value to them, which is merely a little better than no practice. The mindset of doing the full-length prostrations is of key importance. With every single prostration, one shall do it to benefit the beings; do it to deeply repent one’s own bad karma. One has to realize that bad karma refers to not only doing harm to the beings or having taken much meat, but also being still unable to attain Buddha-hood to benefit the beings. Such bad karma is enormous. Therefore, one shall not worship the Buddhas in order to obtain parent’s health or family’s prosperity, but rather shall worship to benefit all of the beings. Meanwhile, through the practice of full-length prostrations, one shall learn to realize the sufferings of the beings. The compassion mind may then develop gradually.

Before today’s ceremony come to an end, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche called those disciples who accompanied the Rinpoche and took a retreat to express what has learned in that retreat. Those disciples are very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, because not only the retreat they took was performed in the rooms that had been prepared very well, but also they have a notion that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been constantly supporting the Drikung Kagyu lineage and the Jangchubling in India. They also learned that their minds are full of disturb thoughts, evil ideas at all times; each one of them repented of the bad deeds. They also mentioned that one of the guards of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche told them that although so many people come around to take retreats, many of the people had simply quit their retreats within the first two or three days. Why the disciples of the Rinpoche could complete the retreat is nothing but through the blessings from their guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 115 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

April 11, 2010

At the beginning of the regular puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sitting at the dharma seat performed a Phowa dharma for a female disciple who died forty minutes prior to the start of the puja. During the process of performing the Phowa dharma, the sound of the mantra recited by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche affected monitors’ screens several times and the images were jolting and disturbed. This phenomenon showed the enormous energy emanated from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche while performing the dharma. All attendees were amazed.

After the Phowa dharma was completed, at once Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the sister and daughter of the deceased to call the family and checked whether the crown of the deceased’s head was warm. Even though Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche didn’t perform the dharma by the side of the deceased, the auspicious signs depicted in dharma texts appeared after the dharma was perfectly completed. By phone, the sister and daughter were informed that the deceased’s body was soft, she showed a smiling face, and the crown of her head was warm. All these auspicious signs confirmed the success and perfection of conducting the dharma.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: the dharma just performed was Phowa dharma which Exoteric Buddhism does have. The other name for Phowa dharma was a dharma of transferring consciousness; it can help transferring the deceased’s consciousness to the pure land of Buddha Amitabha. Simply reciting sutras can’t assist to transfer the deceased’s consciousness. If one is uncertain that he can attain a rebirth in the pure land, how can he help any deceased to be reborn in the pure land? The Phowa dharma is a tantra transmitted by Buddha Amitabha; it is a very auspicious dharma of transferring consciousness that can help transferring the deceased’s consciousness to the pure land of Buddha Amitabha. The sings of a soft body and a smiling face didn’t necessarily mean that the deceased would attain a rebirth in the pure land. In non-Buddhist religions, as long as the deceased didn’t fall into the three evil realms, both signs of a soft body and a smiling face would also appear. To signify a perfect completion of a Phowa dharma, it requires the signs of a warm crown on the deceased’s head and a small hole on it. Such phenomena can’t possibly be explained in medicine and science. In Buddhist scriptures, for those who can attain a rebirth in the pure land, their consciousness would be propelled out through the crown of the skull. After half an hour of one’s death, the body would become cold. Even if you may try to use fire to warm up the body, it would remain the same. After the perfect completion of a Phowa dharma, however, the crown of the a deceased’s head can still feel warm. The reason lies in the fact that the vow of the deity and the powerful attainments of the practitioner can force the deceased’s consciousness out of the body through the crown of the head and obtain the rebirth in the pure land. That’s why, after performing the dharma, it would leave a hole on the crown of the skull which would feel warm due to the energy used.

As stated in the Dharma text of the Phowa, it is not necessary for the practitioner to be beside the dead’s body to perform Phowa for the body as long as the dead body is in places to which birds can fly. Just while Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was performing the ritual on dharma seat at the venue, the dead body was placed in the hospital. Not all of Rinpoches could achieve it. Therefore, to obtain the help of this dharma, the dead has to possess merits and karmic connections of previous lifetimes.

Eight years ago when this dead disciple was about to take refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she had suffered from severe oral cancer. After having sought refuge, she started to keep on attending pujas. Her cancer once was cured that the doctor could not diagnose the cancer by the cancer index. As her health conditions did not allow her to do too many things, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche particularly arranged her to work as a telephone operator at Sino Travel Services, one of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s companies. However, she, thinking that she already got well, chatted with colleagues in office time and did not follow the company’s rules. At a later time, some previous disciples slandered their Guru, brining chaos to the Buddhist center, and she even also followed after them in gossiping. Therefore, her cancer cells reappeared. But this time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not able to help her any more. It was not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got angry at her slandering of Guru so as to give her a hard time, nor did the dharma protectors. The truth was just as what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has enlightened: as long as a disciple slanders her Guru, the blessings from Guru and lineage will stop immediately. So her karma of past lives came back again, and her tiny valuable quality accumulated by her attending pujas became the merits for human or heaven realm.

Although her karmic retribution could not be changed, she got to know she was wrong, and also sincerely made repentance. Besides, before she passed away, she took much hardship to come to the venue to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche every week. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, knowing her family was not rich, still received her offering so as to let her accumulate merits. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also let her daughter make full prostrations on behalf of her in the venue in every Sunday puja. As for the disciple’s husband, he had ever taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but left in saying that himself could no more attend puja for some practical life reason. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did of course not persuade him, since it was his decision. Until these days, his wife being on the verge death, he came again to beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Due to the various kinds of casual conditions and merits accumulated by the deceased, she gained the help of the auspicious Phowa ritual today. Yesterday Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mentioned about this disciple and asked if she passed away or not. Today she passed away in time. If she died at a later time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have started today’s rituals of empowerment, she would have needed to wait for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to complete the dharma and would have suffered for a longer time before being transferred by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; if she died at an earlier time while Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was performing the preliminary practice for the empowerment puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have not been able to perform Phowa ritual for her, either. Thus could be seen that she just passed away at the right time. And the reason was that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had promised her Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would definitely help her through Phowa, so dharma protector arranged the good time for her.

This disciple who just passed away is a living example for you if you disciples still do not follow the teachings. It is not saying that you will die. It is saying your karma could not be solved. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is so compassionate. How painful this disciple’s family members would feel to see their own close family being unable to eat and experiencing much suffering? Were if it not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings and protection, they’d have a really hard time. Unwilling to see the disciple being tortured by the disease, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already asked her: “Have you already put down your husband and everything?” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hoped the disciple could let everything go early, cut the bonds of attachment, and accumulate sufficient merits to have the causal conditions to obtain the help of Phowa ritual to obtain rebirth in the Pure Land and practice Buddhism there.

Through this event, you can see auspiciousness of the tantras. The auspicious signs of Phowa dharma appeared on the dead bodies that received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s performing Phowa have been all confirmed by deads’ family members. Do not think it’s already Buddha-Dharma by reciting sutras or speaking with mouth. Do not think it’s already Buddhist practice by watching the dharma masters talking about dharma on TV or by one’s own recitation of Sutras and Mantras. Some people may think they are practicing Avalokitesvara ritual by reciting Mani Mantras, they are practicing Cundi Dharma by reciting the Mantra of Cundi, they are practicing Bhaishajyaguru ritual by reciting the Sutra of Medicine Buddha, or they are practicing Pure Land Buddhism by reciting the name of Buddha Amitabha. In fact it is not true. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche has ever enlightened: recitation of Sutra or Mantra is not the Buddhist practices. Real Buddhist practices are to correct one self. Some people say they were born to be living Buddhas. Can they just appear to be so without any Buddhist practices? Even the His Holiness has to learn from the very beginning and perform retreat practices step by step in this life.

Without receiving the empowerment, any recitation is inefficacious for oneself and the sentient beings. An empowerment symbolizes to give authorization. With an empowerment from your guru, you will then be authorized to practice this dharma, have the opportunity to transmit this dharma in the future, and have the opportunity to attain Buddhahood. Many people think that empowerments are an invention of the Tibetan people. In fact, none of them have noticed that such a ritual has been stated in the Buddhist sutras. In ancient times, when a king had a new-born child, he would pour water onto the child’s crown of his head so as to indicate that the child would be the king’s successor. In Buddhism, an empowerment serves as an indicator, too, for you to be the future holder of the Buddhist teachings. Through an empowerment, your ordinary karmic body will be transformed into the Buddha’s pure and clean enjoyment body. Thereby, your mantra recitation will work.

Only one with the position of a Rinpoche is able to give empowerments. The empowerments of some very special practice means can only be bestowed by Their Holinesses. It is not until 3 years ago after receiving His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s approval that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could start to give empowerments to others.

You should know clearly what motivation you have for attending today’s empowerment. If you pray for the benefits of your family members and your health, the safety of your family, business success, the attainment of Enlightenment, or your own liberation from the sea of sufferings so as to gain rebirth in the Pure Land, such thoughts are all incorrect. We should know that, with the 49 teaching years, Buddha Sakyamuni eventually said that not a single practice means had been given. We should understand the most important issue that Buddha Sakyamuni brought into light. There is only one major issue and it is to help the sentient beings to gain liberation from the sufferings ocean of reincarnation. To pray for rebirth in the Pure Land is not for one to escape from the sufferings of reincarnation, but to attain Buddhahood sooner in hopes that you will be able to return to benefit all the sentient beings. What’s more, it is hoped that your attending the puja will enable the sentient beings who can not attend the puja to receive help from the Buddhist teachings.

The Avalokiteshvara empowerment to be bestowed today is a tantric practice from Buddha Sakyamuni and the essence of his 84,000 teachings. Tantra held in Tibetan Buddhism can be categorized into four levels: Action Tantra, Performance Tantra, Yoga Tantra, and Highest Yoga Tantra. There are also Father Tantra, Mother Tantra, and Non-dual Tantra. Through one’s tantric practice, the time for him to attain Buddhahood will be much shorter. The best ones can attain Buddhahood in this lifetime, the ordinary ones can attain Buddhahood at their deaths or in the intermediate state, and the lesser ones can definitely attain Buddhahood within 17 lifetimes. It takes three asamkhyeyakalpas to attain Buddhahood for a practitioner of Exoteric Buddhism. Within the time of three asamkhyeyakalpas, the earth would form, decay, reform, and decay again many times. Such a period of time is extremely long. Besides, if one only practices with Exoteric Buddhist sutras and commentaries, he will attain the 10th level of a Bodhisattva’s enlightenment at most. When one attains the 10th level of a Bodhisattva’s enlightenment, all the Buddhas will come to persuade him to practice tantra so as to attain Buddhahood sooner for the benefit of the sentient beings. However, it takes only 12 minor eons to attain Buddhahood for one who practices in a pure land. As it takes much less time, in comparison with three asamkhyeyakalpas, Buddha Sakyamuni thereby particularly introduced Buddha Amitabha to us.

One can only rely on his guru to practice and learn Tantra. How could the disciple whom Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just performed Phowa for practice Buddhism as she could not speak to recite the Buddha’s name herself in the end. Nevertheless, she still could go to the Pure Land with the great powers of the guru. Furthermore, as she had generated great repentance and absolute faith in the guru before her death, so she was born at least in the middle fore of the middle grade in the Pure Land of Buddha Amitabha and do not have to wait for 12 eons to attain Buddhahood.

Before the beginning of the empowerment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first told all attendees the correct attitude everyone should have. One should avoid the following six conditions, first, arrogance; second, no belief; third, no mind of sincerely seeking the dharma; fourth, loosing one’s mind outward; fifth, closing one’s mind; six, tiredness and boredom. If you attend this puja with these six minds, this puja would be of no use to you. “Arrogance” means that you are proud and have an attitude of seeing what the dharma conductor can say. “No belief” means you do not believe in what have been said by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, the guru, and the dharma text. “Not seeking the dharma” means that you have a mind of thinking the guru must transmit the dharma to you because you have come to the puja and that you do not fully cherish the preciousness of the dharma. For seeking the dharma, masters in ancient times had suffered very much. For learning Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had also gone to India in thousands of miles away many times to implore His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to transmit Buddha dharma. Now, there are television shows teaching Buddha dharma. Everyone can just hear Buddha dharma by opening a television at any time; so people do not cherish Buddha dharma now. “Loosing one’s mind outward” means that you indulge yourself and let your six senses be scattered with your eyes looking around and your mind unfocused. “Closing one’s mind” means that on the surface you seem to be in a meditative state without moving; many of you are like this; but in fact, your mind does not accept the dharma at all. “Tiredness and boredom” means that you are tired and bored and cannot listen to the dharma; you feel very exhausted and that the Buddha dharma just said has nothing to do with you and how come it is all the same for these dharma teachings; you begin to feel sore in your legs and want to move a bit; you think constantly that how long the dharma teachings will end; your child wants to pee, etc. These incorrect minds and attitudes need to be changed; otherwise, this puja will not have any effect to you. You should have a pure and clean mind of praying for nothing, but for benefiting sentient beings to attend the puja.

All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are compassionate and merciful. And Avalokiteshvara is representative of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ compassion and mercy. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first taught all of us to practice Buddha dharma beginning from Avalokiteshvara. Buddhist sutra has stated that Avalokiteshvara is an ancient Buddha returning to this world again and has special conditions and connections with the human beings on Earth. Buddha Sakymuni is the fifth Buddha on the Earth living by human beings. So before this human civilization, there had been other human civilizations existed on the Earth before. Avalokiteshvara has 32 forms of appearances. Avalokiteshvara’s appearances passing down from human beings before are different as well. In central China, before the Tang Dynasty, Avalokiteshvara had a beard. Until after the Tang Dynasty, in Song Dynasty, many women all stayed indoors and recited Avalokiteshvara’s mantra at home; at this time, Avalokiteshvara’s appearance gradually changed to the form of a woman.

The dharma of Avalokiteshvara conducted today is called the four-armed Avalokiteshvara in esoteric Buddhism. The middle two hands of the four-armed Avalokiteshvara are holding a sky-blue Mani Jewel which will help you to fulfill all of your wishes in your endeavors of practicing Buddha dharma. “Mani” means that you can fulfill your wishes in the aspects of practicing Buddha dharma and it can let you liberate from the cycles of rebirth and death and benefit all sentient beings. The Universal Gate chapter of the Lotus Sutra has stated that if one prays to Avalokiteshvara sincerely, all disasters can be eliminated. However, on one condition, one has to constantly contemplate Avalokiteshvara. It is that if every one of your thought is thinking about Avalokiteshvara, many things will naturally obtain blessings and be resolved without any praying. But now, you all constantly think about greed, hatred, and ignorance; each of your thoughts does not leave greed, hatred, and ignorance; and all of you only think about your own interests.

To receive the teachings, the attendees shall see the guru as the yidam and the minds are not different; furthermore, see the attendees here as the family dependents. Those who you know as your family dependents are in fact your karmic creditors and debtors. Meanwhile, the fellow disciples who learn Buddhism and are guided under the same guru are the most connected family members in Dharma field. Therefore, if you see the guru as an ordinary man, you would receive blessings from an ordinary one, while you would receive Bodhisattva’s blessings if you regard the guru as a Bodhisattva. If regarding the guru as a Buddha, you would receive Buddha’s blessings.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued on performing the ritual of the ceremony. The Dharma disseminated today is the truly profound teachings that rely on the theories enlightened by Buddha Sakyamuni and rely on true practices of tantric methods, said Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The meditative concentration is achieved by one-pointed mind. The teachings are a truly profound one because it is a method to attain Buddha-hood.

The granted empowerments by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche include body, speech and mind. One who receives the empowerment for the body could practice the Dharma with which the nature is spontaneous both in manifestation and emptiness; to attain the stage of Transformation-body Buddha, one’s causes and conditions are initiated. The body of ordinary people is of karmic retribution one, with which one simply could not rely as a vehicle to practice mantra reciting. Therefore, one’s body has to be purified by the guru to manifest one’s inner pure Buddha nature, so that one’s practices could be effective. With the empowerment for the speech, one would be initiated to practice the Dharma which is spontaneous both in hearing and emptiness to clean the contamination accumulated in one’s lifetimes; to attain the stage of Reward-body Buddha, one’s causes and conditions are initiated. Avalokiteshvara attained the Buddha-hood through the practices relying on perfectly penetrating auditory faculty. Therefore, in today’s ceremony, you would receive the yidam’s blessings of enlightenment attained through perfect hearing. With the empowerment for the mind, one would be initiated to practice the Dharma with which the nature is spontaneous both in luminance and emptiness to clean the contamination of mind, accumulated through one’s lifetimes; to attain the stage of Dharma-body Buddha, one’s causes and conditions are initiated. By the nature of luminance and emptiness, it refers to the pure and clean state of enlightenment of Buddha-hood. Upon the point of death, those who are in the stage of ordinary people would receive help from the Transformation-body Buddha; those in the stage of Bodhisattva would receive help from the Reward-body Buddha; those in the stage of Buddha-hood would receive help from the Dharma-body Buddha.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led all the attendees to recite supplication prayers. The prayers state that one makes offerings of all good roots, wealth, body, speech and mind to the guru. The prayers also state that, by the blessings from the guru and the yidam, one wish to take refuge to the guru eternally and would like to be dispatched according to the guru’s willingness. The supplication prayers are the vows to be made by the Vajrayana’s disciples in order to fulfill the empowerment. Believers who are not yet a converted disciple could refuse making the vow and would not like to come any longer. However, converted disciples who have any suspicion, weak faithfulness, and wrong speeches would also become parted from the guru.

Today, you are granted with the auspicious empowerments and shall have joyfulness in your mind. The opportunity would not be available because you would like to attend. Do avoid the misconception that you have granted the empowerment and you may do the practices at home. Today, it is merely a beginning and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not yet transmitted the Dharma to you; many steps are remained to be conducted. Moreover, don’t think that you had received the transmission before and accomplished reciting of tens of thousands times so you’re powerful. It won’t be effective if you have not granted the empowerment. If you do not have the right attitude and understanding, it also has no true effectiveness even though you have recited very very hard. Buddha Dharma is simple; that is to completely follow the guru’s teachings.

Somebody would claim that the psychic had vision of the Avalokiteshvara behind them and thus they consider they have achieved certain high level of practices. In fact, the Buddha light has been constantly radiated over all of us. So long as we are in the samsara of six realms, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are helping all of us silently. We are all covered by the Buddha light, though we are not aware of. Many children have ever said that they witness that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave his hands to them upon their encountering danger. For example, they have a vision that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held them for protection when they were falling on to the ground. In contrast, you educated adults could not have such vision. The reason is the child has kept his vow. Those statements by the children were made by themselves, because their minds are pure and clean so they could see the Transformation Body of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassion and thus could be saved.

There is a section in the dharma texts: “Be a disciple life after lives. Please send me at your will.” As a disciple, we would be taken care by Guru life after lives until we attain Buddhahood. By attaining Buddhahood, in a day you are Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciple, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will teach and guide you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw his forever Guru Jigten Sumgon came to save his life in this lifetime while meeting a calamity.

Many lamas have said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s way of teaching is that of ancient Tibetan teaching, that is very wonderful. The ancient way of Zhen school’s teachings is by beating and scolding the disciples. It is also stated in the Sutra that Buddha Sakyamuni scolded disciples, by which are beating and scolding, a very severe teaching way. Lastly the dharma texts mentions “please send me at will.” That cannot be achieved in the Exoteric Buddhism since so proud you are. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not send disciples at will yet, nor does Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche beat disciples. As the traditional moral principles have been all gone nowadays, people no longer respect teachers and revere teachings. Once a teacher beat a student, the parents would lodge a complaint.

Before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche do any Buddhist activity, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would ask for His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s advices. Even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is sure that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would agree, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still asks for instruction before starting to do it. Simply speaking, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche is the master, and you are the follower who ought to listen. If you have your own thought, just go be the boss. Some people work for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company and do not follow the company regulations, by which is not appropriate. Some people covered up for their staff who made mistakes yet they still misused mercy and compassion. It is stated in the Sutra that people who abuse compassion would get rebirth in hell. Some people think they are the boss in a company and they can take any responsibility, by which shows a behavior of self-arrogance.

During the empowerment puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let all the attendees, in a number of over 1000 people, step toward the Mandala and bestowed the empowerment on them one after another through a Yidam torma. From the slow movement of attendees it could be seen that all of you do not cherish Guru, do not care if Guru is torn out. If each of you moved faster by several millisecond, your Guru could have taken less hardship. During the process of empowerment, a disciple who was holding her child in her arms insisted that her child’s forehead touch the torma in spite of that Guru said it’s ok. However, with more than one thousand people on the spot, Guru is toiled. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just enlightened in last Sunday puja that one has to pay attention to Guru’s saying. Nevertheless, this disciple who insisted her child touch the torma with forehead did it all for her own child’s good, regardless of the tiresome of Guru who is holding the Yidam torma and of the long row behind. A person of such selfishness is not able to cultivate Buddhism. On the spot, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed to take back her dharma texts and also not to give her another one in the future. One year when His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was performing fire offering ritual, plenty of people tried to approach His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, however, saw the hardship His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was taking, so he initiatively withdrew himself rather than pressing forward like the others.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche also personally said that sutra recitation and prostrations to the Buddha were not practice. Genuine practice is to kick all the bad habits in your body, speech, and mind. A guru would correct your mistakes at once and would do whatever you resent or dislike seeing so as to eliminate your ego-clinging. If you fail to accept it, you may leave. If you neither leave nor accept Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings to change yourself, what kind of attitude do you have? You are taking advantage of the guru, the Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. When you have problems or illnesses, you come to pray Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When you got better off with the problems and illnesses, you then think that your attendance in the puja has worked and that such improvements are a result of your prostrations. Thereby, you refuse to listen to the Buddhist teachings bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and will turn to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for help again when any problems arise.

Today, your visions have been broadened for you have witnessed the auspicious and rare Phowa performed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. A good friend of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who passed away two years ago, had received 1000 to 2000 empowerments in his life and had met with many Their Holinesses and practitioners. However, he did not rely on a guru who practiced in accord with the Buddhist teachings or practiced what is stated in the Dharma texts. He failed to change his evil karma from previous and current lifetimes and had a stroke all of a sudden. Eventually, it was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who practiced the Phowa for him. In Tibetan Buddhism, one’s guru is highly valued as it would be impossible for one to achieve any accomplishments without the help of his guru.

A disciple let her child eat meat. As a result, when they came to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche yesterday, the child refused Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s cuddle. It was because the child had eaten meat and thereby lacked the merits to be cuddled by the guru. As a matter of fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had cuddled the child in the past and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s cuddle is the best blessing. The disciple has sought refuge for many years and failed to change herself. She even let her child cared by a person who left the Buddhist center and stopped learning Buddhism. The relative that the disciple brought to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche yesterday thought himself rich and acted arrogantly in front of the guru. He even had quarrels with his family in front of the guru. It can be learned from these that the disciple did not cherish her guru at all. She failed to make everything clear with the one she brought, so her relative lacked reverence. By looking at the one she brought, it can be seen that she has not changed herself at all. You should know that showing contempt to the Buddhist teachings or the guru can also make one fall into the hell. In order to save you from falling into the three lower realms, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will definitely correct you mistakes harshly on the spot.

The disciple’s relative thought that he can purchase the Buddhist teachings with his wealth. How can anyone purchase the precious Buddhist teachings? If money were to be used to measure the Buddhist teachings, all the worldly wealth would be insufficient to buy the Buddhist teachings! Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not measure his help to the sentient beings in dollars. The disciple who just received the Phowa did not have money, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still performed the practice for her. Yesterday, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received believers at the Buddhist center for 5 hours. Among the ones being helped was a supervisor of a restaurant whose younger sister had been kidnapped in the Philippines. She prayed to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving blessing to her sister. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked a yidam to help her sister and prayed that, if she still had life to live, she would be saved the next day. As a result, her sister was let go early this morning. The believer was not a disciple, nor did she make any offering. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help those sentient beings who suffer and pray for help reverently. Previously, a well-know house builder would like to seek refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and offer a house that took up around 10800 square feet to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as his office. He would give everything as long as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed to let him eat meat. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche refused his offering. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would never distort the Buddhist teachings for wealth. Another disciple, who had almost died with SARS infection and was saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, now actually has the time to deal with house sales. He heard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche say that the economy would not boom in the latter half of the year and then wanted to sell his house immediately.

Earlier, a disciple who had taken refuge for many years came out to thank the guru; but he only spoke about half of the story and still divided the guru’s story of teaching Buddha dharma into three stages. The disciple had not attained the level of the guru, how would he know how the guru would teach Buddha dharma? He did not speak the important point which should be said. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had established the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center completely for using Buddha dharma to benefit sentient beings and not the least bit for himself. The Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center was established as an “association”. The difference of an “association” and a “foundation”, according to the local laws and regulations, is that a foundation can raise money from outside, while an association can only receive members’ contributions and cannot accept outside donations; this way, it will be impossible for outside donors or rich people to come in to control the association; it is also for preventing outside people from using a foundation to launder money. In addition, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not received any personal salary from the association. The venue of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center was originally discovered by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and was bought with a favorable discount price far below the market price. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not obtain benefit of a penny from this transaction. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not earn any penny in the name of Buddha dharma. To earn a living, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche worked hard and had his own business. This venue is also not a property under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s name; it is registered under the name of the association. When the association terminates, the property will be handed over to the government.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can leave this world at any time. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche left this world, how would you do? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has considered seriously that it is possible to hold a puja just once a month in the future. Time is running out. Even if each of you still has the time of fifty years to live, after deducting the times of eating, drinking, excreting, and working, how much time is left for learning and practicing Buddha dharma? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also has the pressure of time and knows that time is running out. Do not think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not die and would help you to conduct the Phowa dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche prepares to die and will die at any time. In this life, you cannot attain accomplishments. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has diligently and actively held pujas in these tens of years because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hopes that after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche passes away, there are ten more or even twenty more disciples who can attain the accomplishments of going to the Pure Land by their own strengths.

You have this rare body, can hear the precious Buddha dharma, and also encounter a guru who does not care about fame and fortune and consider every thing for your benefits. It is very difficult to encounter such a guru; you really should cherish and hold on to this opportunity. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sometimes expelled disciples for letting the disciples wake up and have the chance to see their own faults so that they could repent from their hearts. If you have criticized, scolded people, and committed the karma of evil mouth in the past, after attaining the empowerment and cleansing, you cannot commit the evil karma again; otherwise, these blessings will be of no use to you as well.

April 17, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 75 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

April 18, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei, scrupulously explained the four kinds of wisdom that were taught last week, and talked about many incorrect attitudes of disciples.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment as followed: That it is supposed to transmit the dharma to practice after last week’s empowerment of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. The attitudes of body, speech, and mind of many disciples, however, are still incorrect. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, therefore, once again compassionately bestowed enlightenment on the subject and further provided advices.

The four methods to cultivate one’s wisdom, which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed last week, are the foundation of all Buddhist paths. The first method is to know how to follow and attend to the guru. The second is how to pay respect and obeisance to the guru. The third is how to give pleasure to the guru. And the forth is how to concentrate on the guru’s words.

Following one’s guru doesn’t mean to be by the side of the guru all the time. There exists a distance of 2000 kilometer between Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and his root guru, H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche feels that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche follows H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche and is with H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche all the time. Following one’s guru is to continuously accept the guidance of and rely on one’s guru to learn Buddha Dharma, without leaving the guru at all. During the time of Sakyamuni, there were always 1200 disciples following Lord Buddha Sakyamuni. These disciples had already attained the level of Arhat. They, nonetheless, followed wherever Buddha Sakyamuni went to seize any conditions that could learn Buddha Dharma and to obtain the blessings and guidance from their Guru. Theoretically, it is not necessary for those who have attained the accomplishment of Arhat to be physically by the side of Lord Buddha. When Lord Buddha acted to benefit sentient beings, however, the disciples beside him would be with the ocean of merits of Lord Buddha.

Attending to one’s guru is to obey him, follow the teachings of Buddha Dharma, and change one’s behaviors accordingly.

Prior to the commencement of the puja, a female believer who was once a disciple of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche publicly made repentance in front of all attendees. She once was pregnant but got an abortion and now wished to seek refuge again. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed that even she had been through much sorrow for a long time, her repentance was still not made sincerely. She only described her suffering of the trying time. But she didn’t genuinely made repentance about how she neglected the teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and how the horrible consequences were resulted from her pursuing desires.

This believer once brought her boyfriend to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the hope that her boyfriend would marry her because of Rinpoche’s words. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had advised that she should do it this way. It’s not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thought ill of this man, but rather Rinpoche had already foreseen her future. This once-a-disciple didn’t follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s suggestion. Even worse, she tried to force her boyfriend to marry her with the fact of pregnancy. To her surprise, her boyfriend still refused marrying her and even asked her to undergo an abortion as the fetus she conceived had hydrocephalus.

Many girls are so silly to think that they can control their men by becoming pregnant. In order to fulfill their own desires, they try to control others by all means, as which a Buddhist disciple should not act. Many people may consider it as a matter of course to pursue desires; thereafter while the karmic effects manifest, they also will not think of the inappropriateness of having been self-indulgent. You have been taught “taking refuge under Buddha dharma and being honorable one by free from cravings.” during the refuge ritual. And the verse is saying that after you start to learn Buddhism, you learn to control your cravings by observing the Five Precepts, abandon your desires and then you will be respected naturally. Acting on the contrary, this female believer let her own desire unlimitedly expand, and committed the mistake intentionally. It was because she did not respect Guru and rely on Guru. She has thought it were all others’ faults as yet, as she said her boyfriend did not respect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In fact, it was due to her lacking of reverence to Guru, her boyfriend would naturally show no veneration to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

You may think this girl very pitiful as being pregnant but wouldn’t get married, and moreover the fetus she conceived had hydrocephalus. You may wonder why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not have sympathy for this miserable girl who wanted to return to this Buddhist center. The truth is that, rather than sympathy, in Buddhism the stating point is compassion. From the heart of compassion, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wished to help liberate her from suffering but felt concerned over that she did not listen to Buddha’s teachings, made mistakes one after another, and was still impenitent. When you feel sympathy for one side, you feel faulty for the other side relatively.  An example could be taken for an illustration: A female disciple kept covering up her staff member who had unceasingly made mistakes. She said because she felt sympathetic for the member and she wanted to be compassionate. In such way, she viewed the whole thing out of her sense. When the staff makes mistakes, his company will take the consequence. If one thinks the staff is pitiful and has sympathy for the staff, one actually disregards the company’s situation, doing harm to the company. Such act is to become a yes man. The Buddha has ever said that even a yes man can fall into the hell.

Do not think you will be all right as long as you make repentance. In fact, the tiny merits and virtues accumulated from your previous practices would be all gone once you break precepts. And you just need to start from the very beginning. There is an ex-disciple who had taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but left and stopped cultivating Buddhism for years. Recently he has been diagnosed with stage II nasopharyngeal carcinoma. He gave a call saying that although he had stage II nasopharyngeal cancer, he did not feel that painful as other patients. He thought the reason should be that he had ever followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to India and through which his merits were accumulated. This ex-disciple saying showed that the ex-disciple’s incorrect thought in considering his merits were accumulated through his own practices and he totally had no idea why he would acquire cancer, nor did he appreciate the real reason why he did not feel much pain. The reason that this disciple was attacked by cancer is not because of his leaving, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will do no harm to him nor sicken him. This ex-disciple was born in a family with heavy karma. He has the origin of acquiring cancer. Nevertheless, after he sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s merits had sheltered him from being dunned by his karmic creditors for the time being. But he left and began eating meat again, and his karmic creditors came back to him. The strength of Guru’s blessings cease once your heart is away from Guru. Another two stories of the disciples whose brain tumor recurred and whose oral cavity cancer reappeared are also living examples.

This ex-disciple has the knowledge of traditional Chinese medical science, knows how to give acupuncture and moxibustion. Besides, he is a Ph.D. When he first time met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche intentionally let him take his pulse. Upon feeling Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s pulse, he stood up and prostrated himself toward Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He then said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s pulse condition is a human’s, as the right side’s pulse differed from the left one. Indeed, on the level Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to change his pulse condition. The pulse condition just changes as a thought arises in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind. The ex-disciple was thereafter convinced. His wife was also supportive for him in cultivating Buddhism. However, he left because of his wife, too. In 2005, some people in the center who aspired to have control over the center started to slander Guru. Hearing those rumors, his wife immediately found a friend who was an army officer to threaten him. This officer told him that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as well as the Buddhist center had been under investigation by the government, and he might be investigated, too. Upon hearing the news, this disciple left the center. This kind of act showed his having no faith in Guru.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let him serve Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the acupuncture and moxibustion on the purpose to have his merits be accumulated. Now having the residual merits, he less suffers from nasopharyngeal cancer. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the enlightenment: many people may think it is themselves who has practiced to attain the achievement, but actually it is the opportunity offered by Guru. Guru creates various kinds of causal conditions for you to accumulate merits.

Yesterday, some disciples sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. They said to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that since they have taken refuge for three years, they hoped Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to transmit the Four Preliminary Practices to them. Although last time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche transmitted the Four Preliminary Practices, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the only those disciples who have taken refuge for more than three years are eligible to receive the teachings; however, it is not saying that those who have taken refuge for more than three years can certainly receive the transmission. Those disciples had been considering for too long time on whether they would take refuge or not. Now, merely considering that they have taken refuge over three years and they want to obtain the transmission, they came to ask for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche by relating that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had ever said he would transmit the practices to whom has taken refuge over three years. However, such mindset is a threatening attitude. They came with empty hands and did not make big offering, completely having no reverence. In previous time, there were also some disciples who supplicated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for transmission of the Four Preliminary Practices, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche right away granted his supplication. It is because the disciples were very reverent to Guru, therefore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche transmitted the dharma to them right away. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche clearly knows your mindset. If your mindset is correct, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would grant you what you pray for. At the very beginning years of taking refuge under His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not beseech His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche for transmission of dharma, as what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thought about was merely following after Guru and attending on Guru. Until recent years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to implore His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche for dharma transmission for the need of sentient beings. And His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche always gives consent as he knows Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does that all for the sentient beings.

Another disciple took some believers to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The disciple herself had no respect to her guru, for she had ignored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice and had still gone to Australia. Therefore, the believers she brought showed no respect to the guru, either. What’s more, the believers even had quarrels right in front of the guru.

A disciple wrote a passage about the grand ceremony to be held on June 6th this year. The writing states that the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center will pledge over to cover the cost of the ceremony completely without outside fundraising. In fact, without Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s guidance and supervision, the disciples would not have the karmic connection to support such a grand ceremony. It revealed the fact that the disciples had no sincere respect to their guru. That was why none of the tens of people who had read the passage noticed the problem.

To serve one’s guru is a practice means as well. In the past, an attendant of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche wanted to leave with two reasons. One was that he had been scolded for his mistakes by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, and the other was that other people had been jealous of him and tried to persuade him to leave. When the attendant sought advice from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told him that serving His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche is conducting practice. The attendant accepted the advice and did not leave His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Now, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche values the attendant greatly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never read about the four means to cultivate wisdom written by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, but naturally knew such a deed is practice.

A disciple who used to prepare food for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was constantly forgetful. She did not know what her guru could eat or needed to eat and failed to keep her guru’s matters in her heart. Thereby, she did not serve the guru well. When the disciple had no opportunity to serve the guru, she even made an offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche with two fake emerald bracelets. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche didn’t show disproval simply because the fake emerald would cost nothing, but because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche felt sympathy for her lack of the merits to make an offering to her guru.

One should make his guru appreciative and joyful. To be appreciative is to show appreciation for any disciple’s complete abiding by the Buddhist teachings. To be joyful is to be pleased with the fact that the guru’s practice means can be passed on. Nowadays, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche feels appreciative and joyful whenever seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche because this disciple has made it! Without making your guru appreciative and joyful, you even have your guru worry about affairs in the management committee of the building where the Buddhist center is located. In terms of affairs about the Buddhist center, some disciples said that, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never mentioned or instructed, action should not be taken. However, there are things that need to be done without Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instruction. As you all know what to do with your personal matters, why do you have to wait until you are told to deal with the matters about the Buddhist center? Even if the guru has not instructed, you can still think about the matters first and make suggestions to solve the problems so as to relieve your guru’s mental burden. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had prepared documentation about the grand ceremony to be held on June 6th, and presented to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche at completion of his retreat in India this year. The direction and details of preparation were proposed to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. As the action had not been taken yet, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reported his plans to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and only carried them out with His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s approval.

You have failed to listen attentively to your guru’s words. You still think that you have not made the mistakes by other disciples that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mentions in the puja. Thinking that such matters do not concern you, your hearts then wander about without paying attention. Such a deed is a mistake, too. Everyone is the same as the other sentient beings. The mistakes made by the sentient beings are possible mistakes by any of us. Do not think that the guru only gives the Buddhist teachings on the Dharma throne so you don’t have to listen to what the guru says when the guru is not sitting on the Dharma throne. Whatever the guru does or talks about is the Buddhist teaching in your best interest.

Every time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to India to attend the pujas that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche personally presided over, it was often hard to listen to the teaching with spontaneous English translation due to poor audio equipment. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not understand the Tibetan language. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always sat in an upright posture and listened attentively, abiding in the meditative concentration to listen to the Buddhist teachings given by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and having a perfect understanding of them. Such is to pay attention to one’s guru’s words.

These four qualities are practice means to cultivate one’s wisdom. If one has mercy and compassion but lacks wisdom, he will not achieve any accomplishment in practice. If one has wisdom and lacks mercy and compassion, he will fail in his practice, too. If one merely has mercy and compassion and lacks wisdom, he will become a yes man. The Elephant Jambhala used to be a yes man and carelessly lent others money without asking for the purposes as long as they made the requests. Therefore, as he had helped others to commit evil deeds, White Mahakala took his life. So, it can be seen that mercy and compassion are of the same importance as wisdom.

In fact, everyone has the same wisdom as Buddha’s; it is just that human’s wisdom is all covered up by greed, hatred, and ignorance. If you truly practice Buddha dharma, although, at the beginning, wisdom only appears briefly, as long as there is an opportunity for it to reveal slightly, even as brief as 0.01 seconds, the light of wisdom will let you comprehend and attain enlightenment on the pure and clean Buddha dharma at that short moment. It is like a solar eclipse; when the moon moves out slightly, the sun’s light will immediately illuminate the earth straight.

Having toilsomely attained achievements in this life, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had had a different method than others. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was to attain achievements first and then to verify what Rinpoche had practiced. Many people want to first find out what Buddha dharma really talks about and wait until they have verified Buddha dharma can help people before they begin to practice; they have wasted their precious time such that they do not have enough time to practice. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is completely different than those people. Armed with the experience of practicing true dharma and attaining accomplishments, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche directly attacks your mind and teaches you the quickest and the most effective methods of practicing Buddha dharma; disciples definitely has to follow and practice what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has taught.

When seeing that you are in sufferings, a guru will give rise to a compassionate mind and help you. However, there are many people who exploit the fact that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not generate the hatred and repeatedly take advantage of the guru’s helps with their greedy desires. Of course, the guru will not have any anger and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not come to punish you either. However, everything will follow the law of cause and effect, and generate karmic retribution; everything is all your own responsibility. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will alleviate your emergency rather than your poverty. After Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have helped you, everything afterwards still depends on your deeds and your practices. Many of you just do not believe in the law of cause and effect and do not feel that anything serious will be caused by your evil doings. Many of you think that it is not your turn to suffer, and just implore the guru, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas again when the suffering comes.

Last week, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche spent five hours to meet with the believers. Yesterday, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sat on the Dharma Throne to meet the believers at 5 o’clock and did not leave the Dharma Throne until 9 o’clock. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not take any rest or go to the toilet in the middle. Why could Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have done that? Because of commiserating sentient beings and seeing sentient beings in sufferings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained compassion and wisdom to help them. The guru can help you and let your karma for the time being not to interfere with your mind of practicing Buddha dharma; however, he cannot let your karmic retribution disappear. Buddha dharma is not like the non-Buddhism. For non-Buddhists, it is ok to just repent in front of the God after doing something wrong. However,Buddha Dharma is to teach you to take the responsibilities of cause and effect by yourselves.

If the law of cause and effect does not exist, then it should be useless for you to attend the puja and your virtues will also not be accumulated. Many of you have claimed that you believe in the law of cause and effect; but actually all of you do not believe in the law of cause and effect. All of you think that bad things will not happen to you as long as you attend the puja every week. If this is true, then will the virtuous result of your participation in the puja not exist? There is no so-called unlucky. Everything is caused by the law of cause and effect, including the case that you are detained. Do not think that why only I get punished and the others are fine. It is just that the other people’s virtues have not yet been used up. Everything has its cause and effect; however, there are no other gurus who would teach you the law of cause and effect as clearly as what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has taught.

A believer asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has practiced very well and attained achievements. Will Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche be affected by the law of cause and effect?” Of course, cause and effect is certainly there. Because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has practiced well, the cause is good and naturally the effect is good. Even if one has attained Buddhahood, the law of cause and effect still exists. Karmic results will still be generated. It is just that the Buddha’s mind will not be moved by the strength of karma; in another words, the form still exists, but the body will not be affected.

Before the beginning of the puja, there was another disciple who appreciated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in front of all attendees for saving her father-in-law. She also misunderstood Buddha dharma and thought that Buddha dharma was just used to let her family live a stable life and to let her father-in-law have a good health. This was different from the goal of liberating from rebirth and death regularly as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is used to give enlightenment with. Buddha Sakyamuni came to earth to teach Buddha dharma for 49 years, just for one important thing which was to teach sentient beings how to liberate from the cycles of rebirth and death. If you feel contented because of a stable family life and think that you have attained accomplishments, then you are finished. The concept of thinking that you have practiced well and accumulated a lot of virtues such that your family has obtained stability and health is even more wrong.

Many orders of Tibetan Buddhism all practice the Four Extraordinary Preliminary Practices. The Four Extraordinary Preliminary Practices of Drikung Kagyu order is called the Five-Fold Path of Mahamudra. The dharma text has stated that the Five-Fold path is like a lion with four sharp claws and a mouth full of sharp teeth and is very brave and fierce. This indicates that practicing the Five-Fold Path of Mahamudra can let one go very fast on the road of attaining Buddhahood. The difference between Drikung Kagyu order Five-Fold Path of Mahamudra and other religions is in meditation. The Zen Buddhism also teaches meditation. The meditation of Esoteric Buddhism is even harder when compared with the meditation of Exoteric Buddhism. In Exoteric Buddhism, there is the so-called “Bu-Dao Dan” (non-sleeping meditation). In Esoteric Buddhism, there is a meditation that the practitioner’s feet will become numb after sitting for a long time and will start to move; and there had been a way before that the practitioner would use a cloth to tie his feet to prevent himself from moving. Now a practitioner has seldom practiced like this.

Lord Jigten Sumgon has stated in the dharma text that even if one practices Buddha dharma, if one still has the thoughts of harming others and killing sentient beings, one cannot help to cure others’ illnesses. The Buddhist scriptures have recorded that Lord Jigten Sumgon often help to cure others’ illnesses with Buddha dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has also helped many people. There are two reasons; first, if your life span has not yet exhausted and you have a virtuous capacity, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will help you and hope that you will have causes and conditions to practice Buddha dharma after your illness has been cured; second, it is that you had karmic connection of previous lifetimes with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will repay you in this life and will not owe you.

Killing is not merely referred to an act of killing but the thought of killing as well. For example, some people like to watch the TV serials of love story, project their emotion and blame as the roles of the story. It is also killing for a woman to put a curse on a man. Some female friends would criticize altogether with their female friends about how men hurt them, by which is also killing. As the saying goes, “Even the best judge becomes hopeless at family matters.” Since you have not clearly known the karmic relationship between them, don’t give any comment. Just tell your friends that Buddha-Dharma can help them.

Some people may hope to provide help to other people and talk about Buddhism with others after they learn some. However, Buddhism is not for debating or talking. Buddha-Dharma is to practice and to employ. Do not think that you are an ordained person so that you can teach people Buddhism. It is stated in Ratnakuta Sutra that a Guru must possess twenty conditions to bestow the Buddha’s teachings on the dharma seat. Have you achieve to all of the conditions? Ordained people should not look down upon lay people, and vice versa. Each one has their own causes and conditions to practice and cultivate Buddhism. All of you know that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to eliminate people’s suffering from diseases. Yesterday many believers, among which one had Prostate Cancer and another one had lung adenocarcinoma, came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Seemingly Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave blessings to the patients. In fact Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche blessed those cancer cells. In doing so, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helps their karmic creditors and stops them from doing harm to the patient for a while. In previous years when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche acquired skin cancer, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not implore His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche for performing dharma rituals for him. Nor did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pray for Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. Rather than praying, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just led a normal life and continued on Buddhism cultivation. Finally Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche changed his fate through Buddhist practices. Some people who came to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would like to ask what they could do. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche may instruct them to try one hundred times of full prostrations. However, most of those who tried to do full prostrations for one hundred times would not come again. It illustrates that those people are arrogant and do not have veneration and faith

Some people told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche they recited many sutras at home, but they heard some medium saying that there were many ghosts in their home. They thought it was because they recited sutras so they just stopped sutra recitation. The truth is that there are many ghosts everywhere. The ghosts are not assembled because one recites sutras.

Buddha Sakyamuni taught Buddha dharma in accordance with sentient beings’ causes and conditions. The first 500 years when Buddha Sakyamuni was still alive was called the Proper Dharma Age. At the time, those who followed Buddha were all accomplished practitioners. When Buddha first turned the dharma wheel, Buddha first taught Four Noble Truths and Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. Those who were born at that time had lighter karma; they could just rely on the practicing method of precepts to attain enlightenment and liberation from rebirth and death. The next 500 years was called Dharma Semblance Age. In this Age, the sentient beings had heavier karma and could not just rely on precepts to attain achievements. So Buddha Sakyamuni also transmitted meditation; a practitioner had to rely on practicing meditation and precepts together to attain accomplishments. In Dharma-Ending Age, sentient beings had heavier and heavier karma and lived in the Evil World of Five Turbidities; they needed additional dharmas to attain enlightenments. So Buddha Sakyamuni later also transmitted the methods of Buddha Amitabha, and so on which have to practice together to be effective.

Precepts need to be transmitted by the guru. Precept is definitely not a tool used to discipline and restrain you. It is used to protect you from harm. Because of holding precepts, you will not do evil deeds; because of stopping evil deeds and doing virtuous deeds, you will not be harm naturally. Buddha Sakyamuni transmitted the body of precepts to the world because he saw that the sentient beings in the Dharma-Ending Age did not believe in the law of cause and effect and needed to rely on holding precepts to protect themselves. Those who truly believe in the law of cause and effect do not even require precepts, because they definitely will not have the thoughts of greed, hatred, and ignorance and will not do evil deeds. Having precepts will let one attain meditative states; having the strength of meditation will let one generate wisdom. Every sentient being has a pure and clean wisdom, but it is covered by greed, hatred, and ignorance. The period of time from the time after a thought ends to the time before another thought arises is the meditative state. At the beginning, human’s mind is all inattentive and gross; via the guru’s blessings and the practice of Buddha dharma, you can then gradually change a gross mind into a subtle mind and further make your mind enter the meditative state; then you can obtain a pure and clean mind; having a pure and clean mind can let you attain enlightenments and become a Buddha. When transmitting dharmas, the guru will use a pure and clean mind; those who listen to the dharmas also have to have a pure and clean mind in order to attain blessings. What is a pure and clean mind? It is that when listening to the dharmas, one does not have wondering thoughts, one’s own thoughts and does not resist and compare.

The attendees here should not have the illusion that it is the attendees gathered here that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could deliver the Buddhist sermon to increase Rinpoche’s power. Actually, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could also disseminate Buddha Dharma to ghosts. On the earth, though the number of living people is over six billion, the number of beings in the hell realms, according to Buddha sutras, is far more than the number of people and countless; to save ghosts from samsara is simply much easier than to save people because people are unwilling to change nor to become submissive. According to the Lotus Sutra, the Bodhisattvas are saving the beings from a dark and horrible forest full of ghosts, but the beings would then slip into the forest again almost immediately. Bodhisattvas will have to save them repeatedly. Your heart is unstable and fluctuating, therefore you always have need of guidance from the guru.

A sick believer came to seek Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help yesterday. The believer thought he still had a lot of responsibilities to take care of, so he should not die. Such thinking had brought great suffering as well as pressure to his family, but in fact he was afraid of death and reluctant to accept death at the bottom of his heart. Everyone here will die. However, as you have no idea how you will die, what will happen when it comes, and where you will go after death, every one of you does not want to die at the bottom of your hearts. With such uncertain feelings, you then try to replace your uncertain feelings with work and other matters.

With the advanced medical technologies, anyone who is admitted to the intensive care unit would be striped naked and inserted with tubes in his or her body without having any dignity. Three disciples who work as doctors admit that they have noticed that very few people are able to leave the intensive care unit alive after being admitted. A disciple who works as a physician shared his experience in the intensive care unit when he got SARS several years ago. He was able to feel the suffering of a patient as he found it impossible to turn over, breathe, or even get out of the bed.

What is Buddhist learning for? It is for you to have dignity on the verge of death. None of you want to be striped naked and have tubes inserted in your body before you die. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hopes that all his disciples will have dignity when they pass away. Once, a believer sought advice of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche about his family member’s illness and wandered if he should have tracheostomy tubes inserted in the patient. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not give him an answer and merely asked him to do that to himself. Another person asked whether they should bring a dying family member home. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told him that people had always passed away in their homes in ancient times. In this modern time, very few people are able to stay outside a hospital and refuse medical treatments before they die. The female disciple who received Phowa performed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had insisted not to go to the hospital. Although she suffered a lot, she did not have to suffer more from modern medical treatments.

In the first 30 minutes to two hours after one passed away, his consciousness would become the most sensitive. Although the body might stop function without breathing, the feeling of the consciousness inside the body actually is extremely sharp. For example, if you tough the deceased’s skin, he’d feel so painful as if you are using a knife to cut him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche isn’t talking about a fairy tale. The consciousness of those deceased who had received cardiopulmonary resuscitation before passing would first complain about chest pain when is summoned to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. If the consciousness can’t feel anything, how come they’d say something about chest pain? All know the fact that it’s better not to move the deceased’s body within eight hours of his passing. If a person passed away in an intensive care unit, however, he’d immediately be sent away after he stopped breathing. It’s possible to stay a little longer, if one dies in a single room of a hospital.

The phrase “obstacles that have enabled us to learn and improve” indicates that all worldly phenomena comprise positive and negative aspects. As you encounter something negative, something bad, you ought to carefully examine the situation and treat it as a warning so that you will not make the same mistake. If you can understand that all the negative things occurred to others or to self are good for learning and practicing Buddha Dharma, obstacles would become a great tool for you in Buddhist practices.

Although, many people acknowledged that to learn Vajrayana Buddhism one has to follow a guru; the truth is regardless of learning Exoteric Buddhism or Esoteric Buddhism, one must follow a guru. Nowadays, the teachings on Exoteric Buddhism have been developed to a flourishing state. Many of the Dharma teachers, however, have not accomplished the practices by themselves. Such a teacher, without the attainment based on true practices, could not ever be able to explore the truth of Buddha Sutras. But, in order to fulfill the interests of the believers they have asserted that anyone could read Buddha Sutras and reading the Sutras would be kind of practices. The conducts of such Buddhist teachers do not comply with the Dharma itself. In fact, traditional Chinese Buddhism also differs from the present ordinary types, in that the disciples would practice Ksitigarbha given that their gurus have taken Ksitigarbha as their major practice.

The empowerment of Avalokiteshvara, performed last week by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, is passed down from Buddha Sakyamuni directly. Empowerments are the key essence of the Eighty-four Thousand Dharma. Therefore, Rinpoches generally would not simply grant empowerments; they would also take retreats after they grant empowerments to many people. The reason is that the empowerment would be accomplished through the sharing of the Rinpoche’s merits to the people receiving the empowerment; the more people to receive empowerment, the higher consumption of spiritual energy would be. It is tough, indeed. Each time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performs empowerment, the Rinpoche would recite the Dharma text by himself, without assistance from other lamas. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche constantly and strictly maintains the integrity of the Dharma to perfect the significance of empowerments. During the ceremony last week, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had advised that the guru will shelter disciples under his ever-lasting protection through disciples’ lifetimes till they attain buddha-hood. As an example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been saved a couple of times by Lord Jigten Sumgon, Padmasambhava and Protector Achi. As long as you achieve the standards adviced from the Bodhisattvas, Bodhisavttavas will definitely keep their eyes on you. You should ask “what is the standards adviced by the Bodhisattvas?” At least, you ought to fully accomplish the Thirty-seven Practices of a Buddhist.

Somebody takes the notion that reciting the Sutra of Bhaisajyaguru Bodhisattva could cure disease, reciting the Sutra of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva could liberate the consciousness, and reciting the Sutra of Universal Door of Avalokiteshvara will benefit one’s exam. Is it true? Yes. However, according to sutras, one has to take a seven-day retreat to the extent that no disturbed thoughts in mind to make prayers be effective.

Although, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has granted you the empowerment, yet the transmission of the practices of Avalokiteshvara is not yet bestowed upon you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advices that all of you have to not only contemplate on the four Dharma methods to accumulate your own wisdom, but also inspect yourself to uncover your deeds and behavior in following your guru. If your mindset is right, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would grant you the transmission. You shall not mistake that you have accomplished the practices in addition to your receiving the transmission of Avalokiteshvara practice from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Without the instructions on how to contemplate and visualize, your practices will be ineffective. Moreover, there are different kinds of practices in visualizations. A while ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has granted the empowerment of Vajrasattva, but didn’t transmit the dharma yet. It’s because the attitudes of disciples are still inaccurate. You haven’t applied Buddha Dharma to your daily life and corrected your body, speech and mind accordingly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to keep observing disciples. Nothing would please a guru more than transmitting the Buddha Dharma he has learned and practiced to his disciples.

One disciple shared his experience of learning Buddha Dharma in other lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. In that lineage, practitioners spend most of their time in discussing or researching sutras and Buddhist theories. They can’t, nonetheless, authentically and systematically practice Buddha Dharma. This disciple had diligently practiced, but he didn’t believe anyone can truly attain the achievement depicted in sutras. It was not until he met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, did he open his eyes, realizing that it’s true someone can really obtain the accomplishment. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that since we are lay practitioners, we don’t have enough time to practice Buddha Dharma. Thus, unlike the methods beginning with reading sutras, the teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are straightforwardly and precisely pointing to one’s mind.

The Buddhist achievement of a practitioner isn’t identified by disciples. The achievement of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been recognized by H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche, not by disciples. Master Gampopa once said that when one has attained certain achievement, the accumulation of the achievement wouldn’t be little by little. Instead, it would increase exponentially.

April 23, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious Chod puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the enlightenment as followed: The puja performed today called “Ritual of Body Offering” in Chinese. In Sankrit, the meaning of Chod is “to cut off”, which indicates to cut off all afflictions. The reason we have been in the cycle of reincarnation lies in the fact that we haven’t been able to get rid of afflictions. Our afflictions are resulted from the three poisons: greediness, hatred, and ignorance. Being affected by the three poisons, we are ignorant. Being ignorant doesn’t saying getting angry but means that our mind is not clear. The original clear mind is contaminated by the three poisons and the original wisdom is obscured. As a result, various attachment and afflictions would emerge. Our biggest problem is our attachment which would definitely lead to the cycle of reincarnation. The cycle of reincarnation is the reason of our continual sufferings. Thus, the things or matters we attached most are the things and matters to give up. As your clear, original nature corresponds with clear and pure Buddha Dharma, you will be able to understand the truth of Buddha Dharma.

Chod Puja was composed by the yogini Machig Lapdron, who was married and also had children, 1200 years ago in Tibet,. The Chinese name for Chod puja includes the character of giving charities. Giving charities, however, doesn’t suggest just donating money to temples and becoming great contributors. It means to give up what you have. The name of Chod puja originated from a story of Buddha Sakyamuni in which Sakyamuni had given up his body to feed a tiger. In one of his lifetimes when Sakyamuni was practicing Bodhisattva’s path, one day, Sakyamuni saw several cubs be almost starving to death because the mother tiger was out of milk. Sakyamuni took off his clothes, hung it on a trunk, and then with his naked body jumped into the cave to feed the mother tiger so that she could milk those cubs. Based on Buddha Sakyamuni’s spirit of feeding his body to the tiger, the wisdom discussed in Mahaprajnaparanita Sutra (Large Sutra on the Perfection of Wisdom) and the compassion of Avalokitesvara, Machig Lapdron thus composed this Chod dhrama. H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche once explained that Chod is the Eight Sadhana practices of Tibetan Buddhism. The meaning of “Sadhana” refers that if one specializes in this method during his lifetime, he’ll be able to obtain the liberation from birth and death. All Tibetan Dharma was transmitted from India or China but Chod was the only one that spread back to Indian from Tibet.

All sentient beings in the six realms possess the thought of eating although they eat in different ways. Sentient beings in the realms of hunger and hell have no food to eat, whereas sentient beings having achieved the Sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception still have the inclination to eat; they eat through meditation. Chod proceeds first by fulfilling the eating desire of sentient beings. By meditation, practitioners of Chod would transform their bodies into nectar to make offering to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and then to sentient beings. As the eating desire of sentient beings is satisfied, their anger and hatred would be eliminated so as to accept the help of Buddha Dharma. With your limited understanding of Buddha Dharma, you wouldn’t grasp the power of Chod. Neither would you understand how it could be achieved, nor would you tell the truth from the fake. This is how incredible Buddha Dharma is. With ordinary capacity of human brain or life experience, it’s impossible to think or to explain the state of achievement of Buddhas.

There exist distinct differences between Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism. Exoteric Buddhism refers to something clearly comprehensible and classic texts of Buddha Dharma. So Exoteric Buddhism can clearly demonstrate to you theories and principles that Lord Buddha had taught. It, however, can’t teach you the methods of how to practice. On the other hand, Esoteric Buddhism is to teach you how to practice. Buddha Sakyamuni had transmitted Tantras. In fact, the Dhyana-Mudra of Buddhas you have seen in statues is not placed in Buddhas’ chests but below the navel. This position is related to Tantras. The Auspicious Sleeping Posture, putting the right arm under the neck, placing the left leg on top of the stretching right leg, and settling the left arm on the left leg, is also related to Tantras. These tantras can’t be explained to you yet. There are four levels in the practices of Tantras: Kriyayoga Tantra, Charyayoga Tantra, Yoga Tantra, and Anuttarayoga Tantra. Kriyayoga Tantra can be publicly taught to qualified disciples, whereas Yoga Tantra and Anuttarayoga Tantra have to be transmitted one-on-one. The practitioner of today’s Chod puja can’t benefit all sentient beings if he has not achieved the level of Anuttarayoga Tantra.

Tantras are not referred to mysterious or secret dharma. It is about that when tantras are transmitted, such dharma cannot be heard by the third person; in another words, it must be transmitted only from one guru to one disciple, rather than in public. Tantric dharma will not be transmitted to one who does not possess sufficient capacity or has not studied the basic Exoteric Buddhist doctrines for at least ten year. It is stated in the Sutra that it would lead to guilt for a teacher to transmit tantric dharma to an unqualified disciple. A worthy vessel does not mean that one recites the Sutras better than others or does prostrations with correct postures. It refers to your virtuous karmic relationship, accumulated life after lives, with Buddas and Bodhisattvas. Some people do not take Guru’s advice no matter how Guru persuades, teaches, and warns them. Those are just the ones who do not possess capacity for growth and have no karmic connection to Buddhas.

In Buddhism cultivation, the most important is to act in accordance with Guru’s teachings. Only in this way will a practitioner be able to attain the achievement. No more learn Buddhism with your own thoughts, as Buddha-Dharma is beyond human experiences. Behave and practice in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings. When you were a first grader of elementary school, you always listened to what your teacher said since you knew you were not yet learned. So do you to have the same kind of mindset in learning Buddhism. One who feels he has practiced well and already had some achievement does not act in accordance with the teachings. Why some people cannot listen to it no matter how many times they have been told? It is stated in the Sutra that one should listen to Buddhist teachings more often, which is not asking you to listen more, know more, or understand more. Actually you are advised to listen to Buddhist teachings with your heart, realize it, and all this is related to the mental condition.

In previous days, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche foresaw his son was going to have an accident. Therefore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advised his son not get into any quarrel with others if he had a car crash; otherwise, he might get beaten. His son had learned that the prophecy made by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always comes true, so this time he kept the advice in mind. Several days ago, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s son was driving, his car was hit by a backing van in a careless manner. He got off car to deal with the van driver. Remembering his father’s words, he did not have an argument with the driver who was just absentminded. In this way he had a narrow escape.

After his car was then repaired, it was hit again, while parked along the street, and had a dent in the car door. The event tells us that karma cannot be changed. What is destined to happen will happen, even though one’s heavy karmic retribution could turn to be lighter. Possessing supernatural power, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still cannot change his son’s karma, though. Supernatural power can be divided into several classes: that of heaven realm, that of Bodhisattvas, and that of Buddhas. But all of them are not able to change karma. However, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dedicates all merits from his Buddhist cultivation to sentient beings, his son also gains the help. It is also because the son has ever attended pujas and repentance rituals, he had the merits of thinking of his father’s prophecy. Thanks to his son having been filial and listened to his father, he could be saved from a beating. On the other hand, were the son of sufficient capacity, he would have attended pujas today. This is also why you are repeatedly advised to show filial obedience to your parents. If the son had followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in Buddhism cultivation since young, he probably would not even have had the car accident today.

In fact, as every tub stands on its own bottom, everyone practices and cultivates Buddhism respectively. As the son hopes to rely on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings and protection, so do you hope to depend on Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ blessings. However, it is not possible to count on others to alter one’s own karma. When Buddha Sakyamuni beforehand knew that the entire Sakya clan would be exterminated by a troop, Buddha Sakyamuni tried to block the troops move on the road for three days and three nights so as to make time for letting his clansmen run away. However, the clansmen did not make repentance nor believe the law of cause and effect. Even though Maudgalyayana used his magical power to put some of the clansmen into a Buddhist begging bowl and raised it into sky for securing them, when Maudgalyayana took back the bowl after the enemies withdrawn, all of the clansmen in it were found to have become blood. This is talking about that even Buddha Sakyamuni and Maudgalyayana who has incomparable magical power are not able to change karma.

Once, a disciple took Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to an antique store wherein Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw a dharma instrument Kapala that was owned by the store owner. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked the owner if his business as well as health condition had not been good in recent days. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed enlightenment to him that it was because he did not possess the merits to keep this dharma instrument; he needed to give it to a practitioner, and then his business would turn better. Kapala, one of the dharma instruments that are used in tantras, is made of a human skull with its upper half part. At that point of time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not dressed in a religious robe. As most of people may think ordained people are more capable than lay people, the store owner, rather than offering the Kapala to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, gave it to a famous dharma master of a big Buddhist temple. The dharma master, not long after receiving the Kapala, gave a call to the store owner saying that he would like to return it back because he couldn’t use it. He moreover told the store owner that only Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could hold this dharma instrument. Till now Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not known this dharma master nor did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche learn how this dharma master knows him. This store owner then offered the Kapala to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. His business thereafter became prosperous, just as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche prophesied. He even has started a business in Beijing recently.

All dharma instruments have dharma protectors attached, especially the one made of bones. For a non-practitioner, keeping a dharma instrument that is not supposed to keep would bring about harm to him. Even some of the special dharma instruments could be kept merely by mahasiddhas. You shall not bring the dharma instruments such as bell and vajra home as you like or merely out of your curiosity.

The tibia bone instrument Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche uses was used by and handed down from His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, indicating that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche holds the lineage of the Chod. Such a tibia bone instrument is extremely rare and there are strict criteria for selection. Besides, one can only get such a Dharma instrument when having special karmic connection with a great accomplished practitioner. Not every bone will do. The source and production process of the tibia bone need to meet certain requirements. It even has its historical origin, but such information will not be revealed to you unless the guru is bestowing the Dharma instrument to you. Some people criticize that bones are constantly used in Tantric Buddhism. As a matter of fact, bones are used for two reasons: One is that bones symbolize the Impermanence of life. When a person dies, nothing but bones will be left behind. The other reason lies in that the sentient beings in the Realm of Ghosts will regard the sound from the bone instrument as that of their peers and will thereby come to receive help. Just like human beings and animals, various sounds are used as a means of communication.

Generally speaking, practices of Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism require the simabandha, which protects the mandala from any interference. The Chod puja is the only practice that does not have the simabandha. Additionally, the performer of the practice would not wear any protection chakra, statues of Buddha, or vajra for his own protection because he has to give his own body completely.

When you attend the puja, you should have the following attitudes: Firstly, you have to have faith in the mercy and compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as well as the auspiciousness of the Buddhist teachings. If you have doubt while attending the puja, you will get a doubtful result. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helps the sentient beings without having any desire for fame or wealth, you should not have doubt. Secondly, you should feel repentant. You should generate great repentance and feel deep regret from the bottom of your heart. You should repent as long as you are still in reincarnation and have unpurified karma. You should admit, accept, face, and take on the responsibility for the evil and virtuous karma created by yourself so as to prevent such karma from becoming obstacles in your Buddhist study. Thirdly, you should show reverence to the Three Jewels. When you have reverence, you will have made offerings. Having made the offerings, you will then have merits. With the merits, you will thereby have the karmic connection to receive help from the Buddhist teachings. Fourthly, you should have mercy and compassion. Although you have failed to attain mercy and compassion, you should at least have a compassionate attitude. You are able to attend the Chod puja because you have accumulated karmic connection and merits in your previous lifetimes. You should think of all the other sentient beings who lack such merits to attend the puja and wish that they would be benefited by means of the Buddhist teachings.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to perform the auspicious Chod of the Drikung Kagyu lineage. At completion of the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to give advice. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not sleep well and kept waking up last night, it can be known that many sentient beings would come and wait for transference during today’s Chod puja. Among the attendees are Exoteric Buddhist masters from distant places, who came with many deceased beings. All the sentient beings you wish to help today have been transferred, including some monks and nuns. It is easier to transfer ghosts than human beings, for the beings in the Realm of Ghosts are in real suffering. If anyone is willing to help them, they will accept immediately. Externally, the puja is conducted to liberate and transfer the deceased relatives and friends that you wish to help, but it is you that are actually to be liberated and transferred. Liberation and transference do not merely take place after one’s death. Nevertheless, it does not mean that every one of you can be transferred, for human hearts are fluctuant and might change within a second.

Liberation refers to lifting oneself up from the sea of sufferings and transference refers to being transported to the other shore. Some people thought sutra recitation, performed by paid personnel, would liberate the deceased or misunderstood that one could be transferred with one or ten thought of Buddha Amitabha. That every thought is Buddha Amitabha means that one has only one thought of Buddha Amitabha all the time in his meditative concentration. The meditative concentration refers to the interval between two thoughts. If a thought arises, the power of the meditative concentration will vanish. Buddha Sakyamuni introduced Buddha Amitabha in his later years. Buddha Sakyamuni knew that sentient beings have got heavy karma and that the pure land of Amitabha is the only pure land that would accept beings with karma. One who attains rebirth in the pure land of Buddha Amitabha cannot bring their evil karma there and has to eliminate such karma completely in his current lifetime.

Ever since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to help transferring the sentient beings in 1997, more and more people have come to the Buddhist center. If a practitioner who conducts transference fails to transfer the sentient beings, his health condition will deteriorate. What’s more, many problems would occur and enmity would spread among the disciples. Fewer and fewer people would come to the Buddhist center. However, the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center does not have such problems.

The Buddhist teachings can be categorized into Mahayana, Hinayana, and Vajrayana. The so-called tantric practices are called Vajrayana in Tibetan Buddhism. Practitioners of Hinayana have to become monks or nuns. They do not want any afflictions, so they do not cook or have any prayer beads with them. Nowadays, there are many Hinayana practitioners in places such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. They merely know about Buddha Sakyamuni, but not Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara or Buddha Amitabha.

When the Buddha first turned the Dharma Wheel, the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Links of Interdependent Origination were bestowed. Later, the Bodhisattva path, i.e. Mahayana Buddhist teachings for cultivating compassion and Bodhichitta, was expounded. The 84,000 practice means imparted by the Buddha were not methods, but helps for the sentient beings in accord with their karmic connection.

Whatever Buddha Sakyamuni said is meaningful. Some people think that there are no tantric practices and do not believe that tantra exists. Such a thought should be corrected.

While learning Exoteric Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took in what his guru had said and thought that tantric practices were not genuine Buddhist teachings. Nevertheless, when following His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to learn tantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche eventually got to answer the many questions from his study in Exoteric Buddhism. Having questions is different from having doubt about what the sutras say. It is believing what the sutras say and wondering how to realize the sutras. How can one conduct his practice to make it work? What went wrong? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche finally understood what the Buddha had meant when learning tantra!

Buddhist sutra has recorded a story. Once there was a man who wanted to pretend that he was the Buddha. However, he did not have the solemn appearance of Buddha Sakyamuni. As Buddha Sakyamuni walked without his feet touching the ground, and both of the soles of Buddha Sakyamuni’s feet had a mark of dharma wheel, this man suddenly had a wild idea. He made an iron with the shape of a dharma wheel by hammering, heated the iron to glowing red, and then used the iron to brand his soles to imitate the dharma wheel marks on Buddha Sakyamuni’s soles for convincing others that he was also a great practitioner. Unexpectedly, both of his feet got bacterial infection and he suffered intolerable pains. So he implored Buddha to save him. After Buddha Sakyamuni blessed him by blowing his soles, his soles were healed. When seeing this story, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thought that as long as Buddha can achieve this, anyone can do it as well. But how should one do it?

After following His Holiness Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche to practice Tantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could also help and bless others by reciting mantras and blowing. Once there was a disciple’s son whose arm was severely burned and even the bone could be seen from outside. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche blessed the child by reciting mantras and blowing the wound, the child recovered very quickly and even scars were not visible! There were also many people whose wounds were healed in a very short period of time under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help of reciting mantras, blessing, and blowing the injured locations. As can be seen from the Buddhist sutra’s story, Buddha had already used Tantra. However, since it was Tantra, it will surely not be described in Buddhist scriptures about how to practice it and how to use it.

Ksitigarbha sutra has stated that if a person recites the mantra of Ksitigarbha ten thousand times every day, a year later, the gods of land and so on will come to help and protect the place where you resides. Now as long as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche goes to any place to hold mantras and bless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will know clearly any temples nearby, because the gods of mountains and the gods of land in the temples will come. Recently, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to Shanghai to bless a house. While blessing the house, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw many sentient beings that had passed away crowded besides the window. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked the owner that if this place had had many people died due to bombing in World War II and if this place was once a crematorium. The owner had lived in Shanghai for a long time, but he had not lived in this area before. After the owner consulted a friend living nearby, these things were proved to be true.

After people pass away, only a few of them who have done extremely evil or virtuous deeds will immediately go up to a better realm or fall into the realm of hell; most of them will not be reborn immediately. In the 49 days of being the Bardo, every seven days, a Buddha or Bodhisattva will come and reveal himself/herself to receive you. After the 49 days, you will reincarnate by following your karma. Some people have vowed to come back again. If they have not attained the level of a Bodhisattva in this life, they definitely will come back by following their karma and not by fulfilling their vows. One who has been more persistent before one dies will become a ghost and is reluctant to reincarnate after one dies. Being a ghost is extremely suffering. A ghost, at the most, may stay here for 1200 years before it would reincarnate. The oldest ghost once seen by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was a ghost from the Qing Dynasty; it had not gone to reincarnate after a few hundred years.

In 2004, His Holiness Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche personally composed the Long Life Prayer for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In the Long Life Prayer, H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche had written down the phrase of “sincerely written”. “Sincerely” means H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche had not lied and broken any precept. H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche was to prophesy about the successful future of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche, as venerable as he is, is impossible to violate the precepts. Do not think that reading the Long Life Prayer constantly will let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have a longer lifespan. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not want to live for such a long time since it is too tired for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to go around every day to benefit sentient beings. Today’s Chod puja has nearly 1200 participants. After completing the dharma conduction, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche becomes weaker in his voice. It is not Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche lacks Qi. A man like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who can perform retreat and recite mantras for as long as 18 hours a day is unlikely to lack Qi. It is because conducting this dharma will consume a lot of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s energy.

On the one hand, “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche Long Life Prayer” is to prophesy that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will have a prosperous undertaking of Buddha dharma and will benefit all sentient beings continuously. On the other hand, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will conduct dharmas to help many sentient beings, the Long Life Prayer will prevent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche from consuming and losing his lifespan due to benefiting sentient beings. When entering into this dharma venue, each of you brings your karma; these many karmas will also affect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The Long Life Prayer had long prophesized the four characters of “Rinchen Dorjee”, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma name. When reciting the Long Life Prayer before, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also did not know that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma name had already been in there. A guru will use all methods to benefit his disciples and the methods the guru uses cannot be understood by the disciples.

When attending a puja, you should not pray for your health, not pray for a smooth career and getting rich, and not pray for the leaving of the woman of your husband’s adultery. Everything is under the law of cause and effect, and the law of dependent origination. Whether you have money, whether you will get married, they do not have any connection with your Buddha dharma practices. After attending the puja, one might get sick, have a stomachache, or quarrel loudly with one’s spouse. When beginning to practice Tantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately went into bankruptcy at the time and was too poor to afford any meal. However, during this period, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very happy since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche must had once been reluctant to give offerings and make donations in a previous life; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to become bankruptcy in this life to repay the debt generated in the realm of hungry ghosts. Do not blame Buddha if bad things happen to you. You should deeply believe in the law of cause and effect; everything is all caused by yourself. Buddha is so good to us and you still want to blame Buddha; are you still a human being?

According to the Sutra of Amitabha, those who wish to give rebirth in the Pure Land not only have to practice the Ten Meritorious Deeds but also must be good sons or good women so that they could pass away with their karma. It is referring to good karma rather than bad karma. Therefore, you have to remove any evils and practice all the good actions. In the Ten Meritorious Deeds, the first practice is to refrain from killing living beings. Don’t ever mistake that eating meat has no harm, yet you would still give rebirth to the Pure Land.

If you still would like to eat meat after you have once participated in such a puja, you should not come to the puja anymore because you would be wasting the energy and power of the Rinpoche. The spirits and energies of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are for the benefits of other beings. Nowadays, western people do recommend adoption of vegetarian diet; also, an Adventist hospital in Taipei has carried out a principle to have vegetarian diet only. If people claims belief on Buddhism yet would not like to abandon eating meat, they cannot be qualified Buddhists. Furthermore, don’t bear in mind that taking a bite of meat would be no harm. The fact is you will get retribution as the consequence for the evil actions you have committed to killing the beings. For those who have surgery on the back of body, they have lost the opportunity to accomplish the tantric practices, and upon their passing the opportunity to give rebirth to the Pure Land would be reduced largely; because the chi in their body has leaked. In fact, the surgery is revenge for your killing the beings. Reincarnation is not but effective only after your death. Things change constantly; the cells of a human body would have rebirth in cycles of every seven years. Similarly, no matter what good deeds or evils you made in last ten years, it will certainly have effects in your next ten years. Here, if all of you would like to reduce the possibility of disaster onto this land, if you hope to lessen the suffering upon your death, you have to quit eating meat.

All what Buddhas told is the truth; you ought to believe that. Faith becomes the root of virtues. Those who refuse the truth disseminated from Buddhas would be ignorant ones and would have a rebirth into Animal Realm in their next lifetime. You could see that lots of pet are protected and loved by the owners; however, in their previous lifetime all of them was human being and had learned Buddhism.

In the degenerate ages, the beings do have heavy karma, and have no belief on the impermanence and reincarnations; can’t the death be a current issue to them because they feel that their lifetime is long enough. The youth aims only to accumulate wealth or to find a target for marriage. People of middle age are also only considering about their businesses or job career; even further some people over fifty are still only trying to create new businesses. Karma is a companion to your actions; why not think over the lifetime after passing away? Some people think it suffices that their wives or daughters have been learning Buddhism. Put it this way; it does not mean you have taken a meal if your family members finished the meals. You have to do it by your own. Through the practices of impermanence, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche believes he would pass at any time and therefore the Rinpoche actively seizes time for practicing Buddhism. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have passed, who could help you? Each time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has sensed the sufferings on those non-converted people, the compassion and bodhicitta of the Rinpoche would react to help them relieve the sufferings, to say nothing of the converted disciples. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has no any worries about the number of disciples. Besides, the Rinpoche believes that people who have connections with Drikung Kagyu, with the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, or with the Rinpoche would have encounter with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, through the help from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. All of you come here by your own, without any prior calls for participation made by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Buddhism practices are carried out by true men; it could not be achieved without courage. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche said that repentance worship or reciting sutras is not true practices in learning Buddhism; they are merely some sort of actions to foster connections with Triple Gems. Moreover, it is the ever most difficult task to reform one’s deeds in the universe; as long as we are of self-centered or have hatred in our thoughts, we would not become true Buddhists.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 85 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

April 25, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei, and gave enlightenment about the four important ways of thinking in Vajrayana as followed: Cultivating the four kinds of wisdom is the foundation of all Buddhist paths. The four kinds of wisdom are the following: (1) how to follow and attend to the guru, (2) how to pay obedience to the guru, (3) how to give pleasure to the guru, and (4) how to concentrate on the guru’s words. By cultivating these four kinds of wisdom, one will be able to annihilate ignorance and discover the wisdom all sentient beings naturally have. Wisdom can be classified by 2 categories, the “innately possessed wisdom” and “subsequently attained wisdom”. All sentient beings were born with innately possessed wisdom that doesn’t have to be sought out but has been sheltered by greediness, hatred, ignorance, arrogance and doubts accumulated in past lifetimes. It is as if thick clouds have sheltered sunlight. Although sunlight is out of our sight, it’s always there. If we can get rid of thick clouds, sunlight will eventually appear. On the other hand, subsequently attained wisdom is resulted from our leaning Buddhism and practicing Buddha Dharma accordingly. Through developing subsequently attained wisdom that will in turn gradually influence our mind, our innately possessed wisdom can be discovered. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once again reminded all attendees that you should bear in mind the four ways to cultivate wisdom depicted in dharma texts and contemplate them everyday.

Why can practicing the four methods aforementioned develop our wisdom? There are many qualities needed to be a guru of Tibetan Buddhism. A guru always accumulates merits with his wisdom. As you follow and pay respect to your guru, you would join the merit ocean of your guru. By so doing, you’ll be able to enlighten your wisdom.

Wisdom is different from worldly intellect. One’s intellect is developed by virtuous roots and merits accumulated in past lifetimes as well as experience of this life. It’s for self interest only. Wisdom, however, is possessed by all sentient beings and for benefiting all others. Cultivating wisdom is not for obtaining anything. To the contrary, to enlighten our nature wisdom, we have to eliminate all the contamination in past lifetimes. A man with wisdom would be attentive. He can penetrate phenomena, think profoundly, and will not make mistakes. It’s because he wouldn’t consider or protect his own interests, but carefully think whether his conducts may hurt others. With such clearly thinking, his conducts will not leave any consequences. In other words, his conducts will not create any karma. All he did will not harm any sentient beings.

A believer made an offering of four hundred thousand dollars in last week’s puja. Upon knowing this information, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed disciples to return the offering to the believer. Usually, in Exoteric Buddhism, a practitioner would accept the offering for the sake of allowing the believer to accumulate merits. A practitioner with great wisdom such as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would send back the money. It’s because the believer felt regretful after making the offering and even denigrated that this religion collected money unfairly. By returning the offering, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had prevented him from committing the karma of evil words, and being ignorant of his own evildoings. Due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s returning his offering, this believer had realized his mistakes. Feeling regretful after making offering will enter the realm of hunger after passing. If one’s mindset is incorrect when making offering, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not accept it for Rinpoche would not leave any chance for him to commit evil karma. Within last year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have given back offering of nearly 50 million dollars.

At the beginning of the puja, a disciple, responsible for delivering offering torma and holding an empty copper plate in hands when returning from outside, stood on the left hand side of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to wait for Rinpoche’s pressing twice on the plate with Rinpoche’s vajra. This disciple forgot that, since two weeks ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had changed to the right hand side. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that this was an example of not paying attention to one’s guru’s words. The disciple was disciplined to stand on the spot for a while. It’s the hope that he will remember this lesson.

Two days ago Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held a meeting with disciples to discuss issues of the grand puja of June 6th. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked a disciple in charge of the building of the mandala of the puja, how many weight the platform could support. The disciple said that the stage would be built by the same standard of that for National Day parade in front of the Presidential Office Building. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche furthered to ask if the disciple had told the supplier how many people would sit on the mandala. And the disciple right away explained that there were one hundred soldiers or so in a battery of artillery troop. Although this disciple had taken refuge for many years, from his answer it could be seen that he had no reverence towards Guru. Guru did know how many people in a troop and did not need his disciple to tell him about that. Rather than inquiring about the number of people who would go on the mandala on June 6th, the disciple made the arrangement merely by his own thinking. The disciple thought that the stage’s capacity of one hundred people would be enough according to the previous experience. However, in fact there might be fifty to two hundred people needing to go on the stage. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him if he arranged the thing well, he answered guru back in defiance right away. This response came from his arrogance, from his intention to avoid from being hurt. It is because he has no subsequently attained wisdom. Due to holding this kind of mindset, this disciple had his leg broken in a car accident in previous days. Normally a disciple who has sought refuge for such a long time was not supposed to break his leg, even he might have a small accident. However, thanks to having made some tiny offerings for years, his leg recovered very soon.

Wisdom is for benefiting sentient beings. Having wisdom enables one to help beings with various methods according to individual’s causal conditions and karma, rather than merely using one method to all. The difference between Buddhism and other religions lies in that in Buddhism, it focuses on mind rather than only what you do. It is depicted many times in the Shurangama Sutra about that demons will enter into people through their mouth if they meditate without a right mind. Therefore, the mind is very important.

If believers come to supplicate for attending puja with a right intention, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will grant their wish immediately, even before they finish their supplication. On the contrary, even if one, on purpose of gaining blessings and protection, talks many Buddhist terms, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche won’t consent to them. From time to time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche meets with people who talks nonsense, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not speak to them much. Instead, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestows blessings upon them to make them happy. By thus, they would talk lesser as well as create lesser negative karma of speech. For those who ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche what they can do for their family relatives, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would ask them to do prostrations in the venue. In fact, you are not able to provide any help for your family members. Many people come to seek help not really for the good of their relatives. They just hope themselves to be less bothered. Just now a young female disciple reported to you that her mother died of oral cancer two weeks ago and obtained rebirth in the Pure Land through Phowa ritual conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. As the daughter said, she never showed filial obedience but merely sought a happy life.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche uses different methods to help sentient beings, and these methods are not so fixed but invariable. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already attained wisdom through practices, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows how to help different beings according to their causal conditions and karma.

One who born in the Evil World of Five Turbidities in the decadence of Dharma is easily affected by the mutual karma. At the beginning of this year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche prophesied this year there would be many volcanic outbreaks and earthquakes happening. The recent volcano eruption in Iceland caused all flights of European countries to be cancelled. It also has an impact on the whole world. Unlike in ancient times the worlds seemed to be far away from one another, nowadays, everything happens at every corner in the world will bring about a mutual affect. It also means that people’s karma is heavier and heavier. However, none of you disciples, following Guru in learning Buddhism, was affected and detained in Europe! Due to Guru’s blessings and protection, you are not dragged into the mutual karma. This is also the reason Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has repeatedly advised you learn and cultivate Buddha-Dharma, cease evildoing and practice virtuous deeds. Only by that you may avoid yourselves from being dragged into the evil mutual karma.

Have faith in Guru, and one will obtain blessings. It is not saying that Guru will ignore those who have no faith, nor will Guru stop blessing them. In fact, blessings of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas pervade throughout all of the space unceasingly. It is like the broadcast signals in the air. And you are like radios and televisions that are to receive signals, while Guru’s blessings can be seen as electricity power that can make the radios and televisions work. Having faith in Guru will be like switching on the receiver with the power. And then electricity can go through. Consequently the radios and televisions can receive signals. On the contrary, if you do not possess faith, it’s like that you turn the power off and cannot receive the blessings of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas anymore!

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to bestow enlightenment about the disciples who practices Vajrayana ought to practice four kinds of thinking. Those who have obtained transmission of the Four Extraordinary Foundations should practice the thoughts after they finish doing a session of full prostrations. Employ these four thoughts as the antidote to the deluded thoughts that unceasingly arise in you.

(1) Contemplating the subject of impermanence as the antidote to all the attachments to this life’s activities.

Rather than referring to death, impermanence means that all things and beings in the world are constantly changing unceasingly. All appearances and phenomena are merely causes and conditions that arise and cease. It is not saying that causal conditions arise to appear and then cease to disappear. At the time a phenomenon manifests due to causal conditions are arising, they also begin to cease in the meanwhile. For example, I ask you what time it is, and you answer me, ‘It is twelve o’clock.’ At the time you are answering, the time just goes by, and it is actually a few seconds after twelve o’clock. Human life is impermanent. All things are changing at any time. Scientists have found that all materials are constantly changing. Even the elements of the wool are changing all the time in our sight at this moment, while we just cannot perceive it. All objects such as the Earth have their live time and will experience the changing from formation, existing, decay, to disappearance. Scientists have already told you the law of impermanence. Yet you still think your possessions of people or objects are permanent and won’t change, which brings about various kinds of attachments. Therefore, it is mentioned in the Heart Sutra that you have the notion of confounding the dreams with realities.

When you say the rain falls from the sky, it is nothing but a term you use to name the phenomenon you see. In fact, the sky is still the sky. There is no change of it even when it’s raining. After dark clouds clear away, the sky returns to its sky blue. The rain you mention is actually water. Although water, clouds, and ice appear in different forms, the essences, their chemical elements, are the same.

In the Heart Sutra, the ‘no’ in the verse ‘he has no afraid’ does not refer to not having. It means that both non-existence and existence are of emptiness. Both of them arise and cease by conditions. Holding the view with the dichotomy of having and not having will lead to attachments to people, things, and objects. Having clinging will lead to fear. Some people may think death happens after birth. The truth is that arising and ceasing happens at the same time. When it arises, it ceases; when it ceases, it arises. It is unceasingly changing. Birth leads to death that also leads to birth, merely with another form of body. Put down the attachment to birth as well as the fear of death.

Why would people die? It is because of Impermanence and end of one’s karmic connection. One should keep Impermanence in his mind and think that he can die at any given time. Therefore, he would cherish the time and conduct practice instead of wasting it. When one carries out his action carefully and attentively, he will not make any mistake. Whatever you do or receive in this life is a result of your cause, effect, and karmic connection. It has nothing to do with your Buddhist study. One’s Buddhist study does not conflict with his work, life, or family. Why would one have mental problems then? For one, he used to make animals frightened by means such as catching fish with a net or make animals scared by rushing them in his previous lifetimes. On the other hand, he has heavy attachment and thinks that nothing he owns will change. Thereby, he fails to accept any changes in people, matters, and things. The reason why people would be reluctant to let go of their career and family lies in the fear they have toward death.

A few days ago, a woman was reported on TV to have slashed her husband 17 times with a knife because of her husband’s affairs with another woman. Without bearing the Impermanence in her mind, the woman had hatred and thus took action. One who kills a person will go to the hell, regardless of his excuses. Even though one kills enemies for his country, he will still have a shortened life span and suffer from inharmonious family atmosphere. Nowadays, many TV stations deliberately rouse the hatred between men and women so as to achieve high audience ratings and a few profits. Many TV programs show how men take advantage of women and thereby made women generate hatred in their hearts. In our daily lives, not only men but also women have committed wrong deeds. However, in order to fulfill the desires of their female viewers, the TV stations broadcast biased programs. One should not watch such programs from now on.

One who has such hatred does not believe Impermanence or the fact that everything is karmic connection, so he is unable to accept whatever comes at him. Some people cling to the desire for forcing his family to do what he likes. When his family can not make it, he then suffers. If one has attachment and thinks that he has done something for someone’s sake without looking at the matter with its cause and effect, both sides would thereby suffer. Some people want their family members to learn Buddhism. If their family members do not come, they will then criticize that their parents have heavy karma. Your parents do not come to learn Buddhism because you have not corrected your behaviors yet. Everything needs to be examined with its karmic connection. Nothing is right or wrong and the Buddha sees the world from the aspect of cause and effect. If one still thinks that he has no time now and wants to learn Buddhism only when his child grows up, his career succeeds, or he himself fully understands, he believes neither Impermanence nor the accompanying death.

People often ask what ending their love affairs would have? Would they get married or have kids? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s answer to the question is simple: To depart while living and to be separated by death. Despite they are or aren’t married, they will suffer from living departure after breaking up. If they get married and become old, one of them will die and they will be separated by death. The ending of any love affairs between a man and a woman is not getting married and having children. It is experiencing living departure and separation by death.

At the workplace, you should do your very best to do what you are supposed to do properly. Do not think that you deserve the salary or think that you are doing something for your boss. In fact, the boss can hire someone else to do the job. It doesn’t have to be you. Since you have the karmic connection with your boss, you should exert your every effort to do your job because your boss has paid for your life as well as time. Do not attach to the outcomes. If someone treats you nicely, you should be grateful to him. You shall not forget others’ kindness to you. If someone treats you badly, you should be grateful to him as well because you are able to repay a debt. Do not have any resentment towards others. You should live in accordance with your karmic connection and have peace of mind while going along with every happening.

(2) Contemplating the rareness of human life of having leisure and endowment as the antidote to laziness and false attitude.

As stated in the Buddhist sutras, a human body is difficult to attain. It is like a blind sea turtle residing in the deep sea going the sea surface every hundred years and trying to breathe through a hole in a floating wooden plank. How difficult it would be! You might think that 60 billion people are a large number and it should be easy to come back as a human being. However, as Buddha Sakyamuni himself had been a bear, a deer, a monkey, a peacock, and even a being in the Realm of Ghost, not to mention you people. As it is stated in the sutras that the number of human beings is as much as a handful of sand grains, how many animals are there? Animals include much more than what you see and there are innumerable insects. In 2007, when doing a retreat in the snowy mountains of Lapchi, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw nearly a thousand insects entering his retreat room every night. The quantity of animals is much more than that of human beings. If one is a human being this life, the probability that he will fail to become a human being in his next life is 99.9 percent. The saying “obtaining a human body immediately after death and becoming a matured man after 18 years” is not right.

Furthermore, it is rarer to be able to attain a perfect human body. One who has practiced the Ten Meritorious Acts is able to get a human body in this life. With one’s past virtuous deeds, he can then continue to carry out virtuous deeds.

The Ten Meritorious Acts are to refrain from killing, stealing, saying harsh words, telling gossips, telling lies, making indecent speech, having sexual misconducts, being greedy, being hateful, and being ignorant. To tell lies is to talk about things irrelevant to the Buddhist teachings or anything that is not included in the Buddhist sutras. One should not claim that non-existing matters exist, nor should he claim that existing matters do not exist. In terms of a guru, he should not avoid transmitting practices to the disciples with proper capacities, nor should he deny the fact that he holds certain practices.

To refrain from having sexual misconducts has nothing to do with monogamy, which is a precept of other religions. In the Buddhist sutras, to refrain from having sexual misconducts is to refrain from having sex with those with a guardian, married ones, or ones who have a boyfriend/girlfriend. One should refrain from having improper or indecent sexual conduct, raping women, having sex with women who are suffering pains, having sex with monks/nuns, having sex with one’s own parents. All of these are considered as sexual misconducts. Nonetheless, the Buddhist sutras do not ask us to go back to the polygamy in ancient times. The reason why one would have kidney diseases lies in that he or she committed sexual misconduct in their previous lifetimes.

One’s own body is very important to his practice. If one’s physical conditions are not good, he cannot achieve utmost virtues. If one is blind, he will not be able to see the statues of Buddha himself so as to generate reverence. If one is deaf, he will not be able to listen to the Buddhist teachings. If one is mute, he cannot recite sutras or mantras. If one’s limbs are not perfect, he cannot do prostrations to the Buddhas. If one has mental problems, he cannot learn the Buddhist teachings. Therefore, it is very rare and precious for one to have a perfect human body. If one consumes such merits on enjoyment, he will thereby have no merits to learn Buddhism.

The body of a human being is a result of his karmic retribution. One has gained his birth by means of his karmic forces and was born simply via his father’s sperm and his mother’s ovum. Children of the same parents perform differently. Your appearances and habitual patterns reveal information about which realm you were in during your last lifetime. Although our parents have given us the human body, we have been born into the same family because we have karmic connection with our parents accumulated in the past lifetimes. Knowing that this body is fake, we still need to practice Buddhism through this body, i.e. to practice authentic Buddhist teachings with a fake and impermanent body. Therefore, we have to cherish this body. Meat-eating, smoking, and drinking will do harm to our bodies and we should refrain from doing that.

All the Buddhas of ten directions attained Buddhahood in the Realm of Human Beings. Among the six realms, only human beings are able to learn Buddhism. The heavenly beings enjoy all the time and would not learn Buddhism. Asuras are fighting and having wars all the time and do not have the time to learn Buddhism. The beings in the hells suffer immensely and are unable to learn Buddhism. Beings in the Realm of Hungry Ghosts are busy looking for food and are unable to learn Buddhism. The Realm of Human Beings is the only realm where happiness and suffering coexist. As there is more suffering than happiness, human beings are able to learn Buddhism. As we are human beings, we should take the opportunity to learn Buddhism and never become lazy.

You should not think that you can still practice again in your next life if you can’t achieve accomplishment by your practices in current life, or that you can go to the pure land next life if you cannot go there this life. You have no idea how long you have to wait to become a human being next time. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s previous lifetime as a human being was 200 years ago.

(3) Contemplating the sufferings of reincarnation as the antidote to all the contaminated worldly happiness.

In this world, all the things that make you happy are contaminated. Contaminated means that there will be an aftereffect, or in another words, karma will be generated. Only Buddha dharma will not generate any aftereffect. We all know that smoking is not good to our heart and lungs, and drinking is not good to our liver; but we still smoke and drink for numbing ourselves to obtain a little short-term happiness. As a result, we get sick and our bodies are damaged. Eating meat, drinking alcohol, and smoking are things to murder ourselves chronically. Only after having practiced Tantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would know that a smoker cannot go to the Pure Land. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s father was a heavy smoker and consumed every day two packs of the most peppery and choking cigarette at the time. At the end, he passed away due to a heart attack. Someone will say that he only smokes a few cigarettes every day; however, he has not thought that many a little makes a mickle.

Buddhist sutra has stated that a devil is not just one who will teach you to do evil things; a devil will teach you to read Buddhist sutras, prostrate to Buddha, and do virtuous deeds as well. One can become a devil in this world because one had done many virtuous deeds in the past lives and had accumulated great virtues. However, the biggest difference between a Buddha and a devil is that a devil wants you to attach to everything in this life and reincarnate to this world again while a Buddha wants you to obtain liberation from the cycles of reincarnations. When Buddha attained Buddhahood, the daughter of a devil king once danced in front of Buddha to hinder his progress; however, she was subdued by Buddha using Tantra. Later, the devil’s daughter told her father that she would throw her own feces and urine into the human world. The feces refer to drugs, tobacco, and alcohol; the urine refers to leeks, onions, and garlic, the five non-vegetarian vegetables. Eating raw onion and garlic will cause bad temper while eating cooked onion and garlic will generate sexual desires.

Because the introduction of one friend of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would then meet His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. This good friend had a stroke years ago and was lying in the ward of an intensive care unit. Feeling a gratitude to the friend for introducing His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche implored H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche to see the friend in the intensive care unit. After the visit, H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche bestowed upon the friend a nectar pill to let him eat at the time of his passing away. Ordinary people might feel that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not compassionate enough to save a sick good friend. However, H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already known how the matter of death was. If you were there at the time, you would have certainly implored H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche to bless this friend. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not ask because H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche surely would know how to help this friend. This indicated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s 100% faith to the guru. This good friend had once said that he would like to be reborn to this world as a human again to play and enjoy a good human life. Is practicing Buddha dharma for coming back to play and enjoy a good human life? Although this friend had lived well in this life and had obtained close to 2000 empowerments, at the end he still experienced the pains of illnesses; this was caused by his greedy thought of coming back to this world again and this thought turned all his accumulated merits into virtues which then could not change his karma from past generations of lives.

Before the beginning of the puja, a disciple who is a mother shares the story of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saving her daughter. This mother hanged clothes in the 5th floor balcony while leaving her two-year-old daughter alone in the room. The door between the balcony and the room was locked by the naïve daughter. And the mother in the balcony could only watch helplessly her daughter falling down headlong from 5th floor to the fourth floor; and after the accident, no sound could be heard from the room. For more than a whole hour in the balcony, she did not see her daughter and only helplessly and continuously cried and shouted without gaining any response; she could just pray to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for rescuing her daughter. Eventually, more than an hour later, her daughter vivaciously climbed to the 5th floor again. Her daughter only had small scratches on the nose and the forehead. During the period of this hour, her daughter also went to sleep. The daughter also told her mother that when she fell down the stairs she saw Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received and hold her. After that, the daughter ran to the Buddhist worship room to pay homage to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After this disciple got married, due to ovarian chocolate cysts, uterine contraction and other gynecological diseases, this disciple could not conceive for a long time. However, shortly after she took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her uterus restored and she also got pregnant and gave birth to this daughter. She and her family have constantly received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened us that as a mother she had not taken good care of her own daughter and still relied on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to save her daughter in her home; this was to let the guru have worries. When this disciple got married and could not be pregnant, she suffered a lot; after giving birth to a child, she then worried about the matters of her child, this made her suffer even more. She still wanted to live a better life and her desires came one after another.

In 2007, when performing a retreat in the 4000-meter high Mt. Lapchi in Nepal, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used the dharma eye to see personally the sentient beings’ sufferings of reincarnations in the six realms; after seeing the sufferings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave rise to a compassionate and merciful mind and cried for hours. After the completion of the retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche about this; H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche simply said, “You have attained the accomplishment of emptiness.” You now know that reincarnation is suffering; however, it is very hard for you to experience this no matter how to explain it. A person once came to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and said that practicing Buddha dharma was for not to reincarnate. These claims are heard from elsewhere and are just said to avoid unwanted sufferings of reincarnations; they are not said for liberating from the cycles of reincarnations, or for attaining Buddhahood to benefit sentient beings.

(4) Mediating on liberation to benefit sentient beings as the truly meaningful direction of this life.

Many people asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, “Where is the direction of our life?” The answer is this sentence, “Mediating on liberation to benefit sentient beings as the truly meaningful direction of this life.”

Currently you do not have the ability to help sentient beings for liberating from the cycles of rebirth and death; but at least you should have the thoughts to help sentient beings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has held the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness every year; this is to help sentient beings for liberating their rebirth and death. And the action of introducing your relatives to participate in the puja is to help them create virtuous conditions and increase their opportunities to practice Buddha dharma.

Four methods of practice include:

(1) Taking refuge and practicing taking refuge.
(2) Practicing self-liberation.
(3) Cultivating Bodhicitta.
(4) The teachings of secret tantra.

There was once a monk who asked the guru how to practice Buddha dharma. The guru told him to take two bowls with him, putting black beans in on bowl and putting white beans in the other, to perform retreat. During the retreat, if the monk had an evil thought of benefiting himself, he should take out a black bean from the bowl; if the monk had a virtuous thought of benefiting others, he should take out a white bean from the bowl. When this monk completed the retreat, all of the black beans in one bowl are completely taken out and only a few white beans are taken out from the other bowl. All of you here are the same as the monk; do not think that you have practiced well.

A Buddha’s mantra comprises his virtues, aspiration, and mercy. Nowadays, some who suffer hemorrhoids try to recite the Great Snow Mountain Mantra for his disease but they eventually still need to undergo the surgery. This mantra is not used to cure the hemorrhoids. In the past, people who have a sore back due to their unbalance of 4 elements recited this mantra to release their sores.

The Great Compassion Mantra was very efficacious. But it isn’t so since the self-righteous translated the meaning of mantra. The meaning of a mantra should not be interpreted. When translating sutra, Master Xuanzang did not translate some words but transliterate them such as mantras and words that have more than one meaning. If a mantra could be translated, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would have done it. Although His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche passed many mantras upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never asked His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche about their meanings.

Why the Great Compassion Mantra should not be translated? First, some deities are much wrathful, and they won’t appear except particular conditions. Secondly, the translation will make you distracted during your reciting as you would try to recall which Buddha or Bodhisattva this mantra is for, or which one is more powerful etc. Thirdly, a mantra usually has several meanings. You will realize different meaning at different position of the accomplishment. Six Syllable Mantra has six words only, and its simplest meaning is “Pure Lotus”. The more accomplishment you attain, the more profound meaning you will realize. Even a small kalpa is not long enough for Buddha with profound wisdom to explain the Six Syllable Mantra.

Language is just one of the skillful means. Human beings have to communicate with each other by languages. Sometimes when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche liberated the beings of Ghost Realm, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not understand their sayings in Ancient Taiwanese. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche understood what they tried to say. This is because they communicate through mind. Beings in the Realm of Heaven communicate with each other through mind as well.

Each day before going to bed, each disciple should reflect and use the thirty-seven practices of Bodhisattvas to examine his own words and deeds at that day. As long as there is one practice which your conducts fails to meet, you have not practiced Buddhism on that day and you are not a eligible to be Buddhist disciple and will not obtain blessings. Last two weeks, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had gave you the enlightenment about the four kinds of wisdoms. Today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche talked about the four methods of antinodes. Each disciple should practice more on these four kinds of contemplations. Those who do not want to change and those who do not contemplate with such mind should not come again. Practicing Buddha dharma is not just attending pujas and listening to Buddha dharma. Now people like to listen but do not want to do. Practicing Buddha dharma is also not seeing whether your action of prostrating to Buddha reaches certain standard or whether you have performed well on knocking the wooden fish; it all depends on your mind. If you have this mind, you can then accomplish it one day. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained achievements and you should be able to attain achievements as well, because all sentient beings are equal. If Buddha dharma cannot be used, it will not be Buddha dharma. If you do not contemplate Buddha dharma and do not use Buddha dharma in your life, it would be better for you to leave.

Last year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had foretold that this year will have disasters of volcano breakout and earthquakes. It is happening now, as the made prediction. Why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to foretell these things? It is because the Rinpoche has attained the realization of impermanence. In ancient times, people used to take it as irrelevant if something happening is at the other areas. But, in contrast, no matter where the things are happening, we all of people have affected. For example, the current volcano breakout in Europe has spreading effects in many aspects. Lots of people hence become involved or have hard time. However, none of the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center who are under the protection and sheltering from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has become involved. The merits could not be made possible without the Rinpoche’s keen and sincere advices and guidance on learning Buddhism and practicing good deeds.

In such degenerate ages, karma of any beings has become heavier more and more. According to Buddha sutras, the longevity of human beings is in a decreasing process. Per one hundred years, the longevity decreases one till it reaches ten. During such process, the power of karma is continually intensified and the bad karma increases as well. The power of karma will not be lessened until the longevity, at ten, increases at a rate of one per one hundred years. Don’t ever argue whether the longevity of human beings is decreasing, or insist that the longevity would be increasing because of the progress on medical science. Nowadays, you could learn from newspapers that many people died at quite young age. People died in fire accidents, for instance. Don’t assume that you will not pass away before the age of seventy or eighty; don’t impose yourself a plan that you need certain amount of money or you need marriage and children first before you would like to embark in learning Buddhism upon your retiring. In the course of the ceremony, the Rinpoche asked many doctors, who are disciples, to tell attendees what they observed in hospitals. The doctors said, more and more people, at all ages, died of accidents, while a significant portion of them is less than forty. Many infants have put in ICU. The observation showed that ages of patients of cataract, who require a surgery operation, become lower. Many people passed away under fifty and lots of them died of accidents.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is an expert in the knowledge of death. If the Rinpoche publishes a book such as “how to die peacefully and smoothly”, that would be a best seller. Some of you have read one book, which talks about some certain facts about death. But the knowledge it disclosed is in fact superficial. It has not yet described the real process of death. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not tell you the truth until you become qualified to practice the Phowa ritual.

One has to bear in mind such an eager attitude toward learning Buddhism as illustrated by the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra; the eagerness has to be similar to extinguish fire on one’s hair. Some people think that holidays are for family gathering and therefore could not attend the puja. Though it seems reasonable, it is laziness indeed. Your family could not be a harbor of refuge at all. On the contrary, it would be the typhoon eye. Why? When the wind of karma flows in your family, the trouble manifests itself all around. Think it over. You shall not mistake that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has no human sympathy. The compassion could not be cultivated without human kindness. The reality of the so-called human sympathy is the facts related to human beings, or the phenomena that would occur in between human beings. Any phenomena in the world cannot happen due to so-called accidents; it happens according to causes and effects. Those who have not ever committed to killing any beings in past lifetimes will not encounter accidents, nor will they even bleed any.

Among so many sentient beings whom Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has helped and so many people whom Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has met for so many years, none ever asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advises about how to do so not to commit evildoings?

Master Gampopa ever said, when meeting a guru who is authentic, has dharma eyes, and has attained realization, a disciple should attend the guru faithfully and pay obeisance to the guru. Meanwhile, guru does not need to transmit too many dharmas upon those disciples who have firm faith in him. He could help them practice to obtain enlightenment simply by pointing out their problems.

There are so many people can’t make any progress no matter how many practices they have taken or how many mantras or sutras they have recited. The major problem is they do not follow an authentic guru. An authentic guru a guru who possesses virtues and is authorized to transmit teachings. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is not easy to be a guru. Although you recite sutras and make prostration towards Buddha, do not think you are good enough to teach others how to recite sutras or make prostration.

In Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s first meet with HH Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche aroused complete faith and reverence. Even some Tibetans admitted that they could not arouse such a faith and reverence as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does. Therefore, the blessings from the power of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche came upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continuously.

The teachings that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche bestowed upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were to directly attack Rinppche’s crucial points without saying too many words. Since childhood, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always been doing things very well. Therefore, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was to break Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s arrogance by giving various lessons. For example, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, knowing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not how to make mild tea, ever ordered Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to make a cup of milk tea and then picked the fault of the taste of the milk tea to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reactions. This is a teaching to break the arrogance. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would teach disciples in the same way. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would know if you do practice accordingly by doing what you like or dislike to test your reaction.

Guru does not need to say too much to disciples that have firm faith. It is like His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche transmitted dharma upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in 10 minutes although His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche ever that it would take His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche 1 hour to do this.

Although today’s teachings are from this book, they are exactly as same as what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been teaching for these years.
