Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

December 5, 2009

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

December 6, 2009

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over a regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei and gave enlightenment about Master Gampopa’s teachings during the puja.

We are often accompanied by ignorance and habit energies for life after life, not just a long period of life time, one or two years, or this whole life. Ignorance does not mean anger or losing temper but meaning one’s nature is hidden by greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance and delusion. The light of one’s nature is not able to reveal itself. Therefore he is not able to have the right mind and understanding regarding Buddha Dharma. He will have doubt about the orthodox Buddhism. Habit energies are different from habits. Habit energies are the karmic power accumulated from life after life of which have kept us reincarnating unceasingly. Karmic power comes from good and evil karma. Sentient beings cannot control their own heart and therefore are dictated by the five poisons: greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance and delusion. Naturally, our heart will be affected by the five poisons. Natural does not mean it exists originally. Because of the causes and conditions, our heart changes and then greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance and delusion appear naturally. All of you think that you don’t have any of the five poisons but you will find out that actually you are filled with poisons when the obstacle appears. The nature we originally possess is blinded by the five poisons and we must cleanse them with pure Buddha Dharma. Vajrayana Buddhism takes the five poisons and uses them for practicing. That is, using the five poisons as the tools for practicing. Though you are not able to accomplish this now but at least you must suppress the five poisons and do not let them constantly generate. However, what you are doing right now will grow your five poisons.

Just like that recently, there were some disciples who had gossiped that the travel expense to attend abroad pujas was too expensive and the Japanese food sold in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Glorious Jewel Japanese Food store was too expensive, too. When it is about money, all of you will become particular about trifle things and any word can come out of your mouth! You could judge it if you were an ordinary consumer. Yet you cannot because you are a disciple who has already sought refugee. It is considered criticizing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche when you criticize Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Travel Services and company. Even criticizing people is not right, not to mention criticizing the guru? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever enlightened that if you can achieve things what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has accomplished then you are allowed to criticize him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been helping sentient beings without giving any thought to his own businesses, family and life, why will Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche care about money? All of you will not keep the guru in mind when it is about money. All of you are ungrateful!

Some disciples said that it was not necessary for them to stay in such an upscale hotel and to have good food. Yet has anyone thought that in India, the streets are not safe, the food and water are not clean, either. The incident of some rebels breaking into the hotel and killing the hotel guests in India had happened before. There were also people killed by drinking piped water in India. To ensure disciple’s safety, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had specially hired the bodyguards to protect them and arranged nice hotel and food. In Taiwan, you also know that some places are too dangerous to go and some food is too dirty to eat. Yet why do you say that you don’t need to have good food and live in the nice hotel abroad!

In regard to the Japanese food, it took Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche 2 years to survey high quality vegetarian foods in Japan by all the possible means so that you can have good food to eat. Take dried persimmons as an example, though the Japanese government allows the use of sulphur in the production of dried persimmons, the chemical is toxic and can bring harm to the body if one consumes them for a long term. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche particularly conducted a painstaking search all on his own expenses and eventually located a store that produces dried persimmons without using any sulphur so as to enable the disciples to eat safely. During the past years, the Japanese currency has risen a great deal in value, but the prices of the food products sold in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s shops have never been raised. Nevertheless, you still compare ordinary dried persimmons in the market with the Japanese food? Will you be unable to live on without these thousand NTD paid to travel overseas or a few hundred NTD on shopping? You know clearly that such money will be used to benefit the beings. When a situation takes place, all of you might even forget your own father as long as you contemplate your own benefits. To speak bluntly about it, if you still say that you don’t need to eat and live well when you are granted the opportunity to eat and live well, you are destined to be a beggar. With the mantra recitation you have conducted, your force of mindfulness is greater than that of an average person. If you say that you don’t need to eat and live well, you are actually cursing yourself to have a bad future. As stated in the Buddhist sutras, those with merits will naturally like good things.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never said that the Japanese food products from Glorious Jewel Company have been blessed or will enable people to receive blessings by eating them. Nor did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mention that one who travels overseas with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will receive blessings. If there had been blessings, the disciple who passed away at the Nepalese airport wouldn’t have died in Nepal. Moreover, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never forced you to buy the Japanese food products or to join group tours. If you don’t have money, you can choose not to buy them or attend the pujas held overseas. Unfortunately you are afraid of not getting the merits and blessing if you don’t go. You can make an offering with the money, instead. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never refuses your offering simply because you merely offer a few hundred NTD.

The reason why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche decided to use “Glorious Jewel” as the title of the company lies in that “Glorious Jewel” is the name of the lineage founder, Jigten Sumgon. Every time when one speaks of “Glorious Jewel”, he will get the blessing once more. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche shows approval for the name being used by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as well. If not, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to change it. When you complain that the products are expensive, you will definitely say, “That Glorious Jewel is expensive.” Such saying is not good at all. If any disciples have said that, their practice of the Dharma Protector will be conducted in vain, for the Dharma Protector Achi is the grandmother of Jigten Sumgon. As long as you have criticized it, you have said harsh words and violated the precepts. With such harsh words, you will never attain achievements in practice. The virtues and merits you had earned from attending the pujas in Nepal and India thereby vanished. Merely tiny bids of merits will be left for you to be born as a pet next life. Because you don’t believe in the Buddhist teachings or the law of cause and effect, you are being ignorant.

Many masters in Exoteric Buddhism are better dressed than Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Some Buddhist centers spent billions of NTD to build monasteries. Nonetheless, as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas live much better off up there, they will not live in the monasteries. As a result, it is the masters who live in the monasteries. On the other hand, we are not offering any dining, clothing, living or traveling expenses to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. What’s more, the total of the offerings made by over 300 disciples on the trip to Nepal was even less than the amount of offering made by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche alone to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was merely the one who passed the money to make the offering which, your offerings included, was earned mainly through Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s businesses. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hasn’t got your money into his businesses, either, for you are still living a good life. One disciple actually hoped that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could give him money. Even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is willing to be the idiot, the Dharma Protector Achi will not allow it to happen anyway.

Recently, the family members of two disciples passed away. The mother of one disciple received the Phowa, whereas the father of the other disciple didn’t. Neither of these two elderly persons had met with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but only one of them received the Phowa. It wasn’t because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche preferred one over the other but because the merits of the deceased had to be taken into consideration. If the deceased one doesn’t have merits, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche may not be able to help him or her even Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is willing to do so. Without enough merits, the deceased one will not achieve a high attainment even he or she reaches the Pure Land.

The disciple, whose father did not obtain transference through Phowa ritual, had no offering heart to beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conduct transference dharma for his father. He merely took a slight cash gift as offering. In fact, it is not the amount of money matters, but one’s mindset. He implored Buddhas and Bodhisattvas only by offering of several thousand dollars while he paid the undertaker several hundred thousands dollars. He just took Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as cheap Buddhist labor. There is one undertaker that has a long-term cooperation with the Glorious Jewel, and their fee only charges one firth of the amount of other undertaker’s. The undertaker has profit, though. Yet you do not clearly know and still pay the undertaker the expense of their recitation of Sutra. Besides, at the point this disciple’s father passed away, he called Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s travel agency, saying he wanted to cancel his enrolling in a Japan traveling tour. After he settled down the mourning affairs, he called and said he wanted to enroll for the tour again. This kind of his deeds shows he did not respect the agency at all. Is there any travel agency does not charge for cancellation fee?

The old grandmother Yang who passed away in the Nepal airplane was in poverty and had no money to offer. She, since taking refuge, however, had been praised everywhere the greatness of Guru, and thus was right the offering. Therefore, she possessed sufficient merits that she could died sitting in a chair and obtained the Phowa ritual.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always advised you to make offering and attend puja, for you to have the opportunity of accumulating merits. One has to accumulate merits by himself. Do not consider you could just obtain merits from listening to your family dependants reciting Sutra. It is a similar case when your family dependants eat food and feel full, you, who has not eaten, can not feel full together with them. You yourself still have to eat. Only children’s merits can help their parents. Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and guru’s merits can not give to disciples for use. Even they want to give merits to disciples, yet it will not take any effect for disciples’ lack of merits. Children’s merits can offer their parents, though, for parents have great grace of love and care for their children. Hence, true filial devotion is to learn and cultivate the Buddha’s teachings.

Chinese can easily believe in Buddhism, but they are prone to transgress Buddha-Dharma. On the contrary, Japanese can not easily believe in Buddhism, but as long as they start to believe, they will believe to the end. There are tow Japanese who took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Once when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to Japan, they got informed merely via a phone call, and traveled from Kyushu to Kyoto to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only for half an hour. Think about yourself.  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche holds puja in Taiwan every week and gives you enlightenment for three hours, but you still can not listen to it, still live by your own thoughts.

Gampopa has taught us to clearly realize that our real companion is ignorance and karmic impressions, not our relatives such as couple and children, and so forth. Before we attain realization of that all phenomenon is illusory, we have to seize the time to truly practice Buddha-Dharma. Before we are able to employs greed, hatred, delusion, arrogance, and doubt as the means of practices, we have to hang on true practice.

True practice is to learn Buddhist teachings and get constantly influenced and edified by Buddha-Dharma, to cultivate the mercy, compassion and Bodhicitta.

All of you are lay people and your time is limited: In 24 hours a day, one spends 8 hours working, another 8 hours sleeping, 2 hours on transportation and another 2 hours on having meal, 1 hour on bath and the call of nature, another 1 hour watching television and another 1 hour on gossiping and still another 1 hour on thinking. Thus, no time left for you to learn and cultivate the Buddhist teachings. Do you still think you are practicing Buddha-Dharma? Actually not! It would be good for you if you spend one hour per day on practice! How much our karma has been accumulated from past lives? This kind of practice is not sufficient for us to obtain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Therefore, we ought to seize the time and diligently practice. It is not indicating of doing a lot of recitation of Sutra or mantra, but doing the true practice of applying Buddha-Dharma in your whole daily life.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already taught disciples that before going to bed every night you should, based on the Thirty-seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, reflect on whether your body, speech and mind have carried out any evil conducts. If the answer was positive, you should immediately make repentance and change your behaviors as soon as possible. It has also been taught to disciples to deeply believe in the impermanence of life, believing in the truth that you may die in any minute. Moreover, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has also taught that going to sleep was as if going to die. The differences between going to sleep and going to die only exist in the phenomena that your heart is still beating and you’re breathing in sleep. Nonetheless, you always feel you’re too busy and too tired to examine your conducts. Going to sleep has become an enjoyment and you have developed a clinging to it.

Every phenomenon in the world is illusory, being with the nature of void. It arises and ends with conditions. To make offering according to the principle that “the essence of three wheels is void of nature” does not mean to do it without a self, without an object, nor without a receiver. Rather, it means the offering of body, speech and mind is essentially void of nature. Thus make the offering when the conditions meet, and let the offering become void after making it.

Some disciple has been working at Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s corporation, but paid little attention on his work and felt sorry for himself because of his father’s illness and problems of child care. It is not simply for the sake of the job itself that you receive a salary. Instead, it was given to you because you actually have accomplished something. If you are careless in your job and make mistakes, you not only let down your boss but also fail to fulfill everyone’s expectation. If the merits of your family or your children are too abundant to die, they won’t pass away. You should understand that your family is not the only one who gets sick. The heart conditions of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother have not been well. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still went on to his retreat, when his mother got ill. It was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche believed that when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has achieved his vow of benefiting all sentient begins, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would appear to care for his family. As long as you believe in your guru, Boddhas, Bodhisattvas and dharma protectors will arrange the best for your family.

It’s your family’s fate to be well or otherwise. You got to believe in the law of cause and effect. In meditation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once saw a lobster on top of a believer’s head. It’s because this person had been killing lobsters everyday. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also saw a wild hog kept striking a boy in his back only because he had eaten two pieces of pork. It shouldn’t occur to you that all your karmic creditors have already been liberated because you had attended pujas for many times. It’s easier to liberate the consciousness of your ancestors, but it’s not necessarily the case for your karmic creditors. If you can genuinely vow to help sentient beings to achieve Buddhahood and practice Buddha Dharma accordingly, the hatred of all those sentient beings killed or eaten by you can be temporarily subdued so as not to cause harm to you. However, if your purposes of learning Buddha Dharma are to benefit yourself and to live a good life, your karmic creditors will not allow you so. That’s why your thought and motivation of learning Buddha Dharma is critical. Simply speaking, whatever you do should be for the sake of benefiting all sentient beings rather than for yourself.

The bodies of those whose consciousness was transferred by Phowa Dharma conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not discharge feces and urine. There would be no ascites nor livor mortis. Not all deceased’s bodies would develop livor mortis. From the perspective of medicine, livor mortis are caused by the deposited blood on the surface of the skin. In fact, they are the sentient beings the deceased had eaten. There would be no such livor mortis if the karmic creditors were all together liberated by Phowa Dharma.

If one had accumulated the karma of killing sentient beings in past lives, he must suffer from the pain of illness before he dies. If one has experienced operational surgery prior to his death, he must fall into the Tachiyama Hell (the hell of knife mountains) after passing away. It’s because the phenomenon of being in hell has already been manifested in the illness.

Last Saturday, one believer came to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to seek for advises about the lousy business of his comic book rental shop. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, to his surprise, congratulated him for the bad business because he could begin to think about starting a different business. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that more than 80% of the content of comic books were related to pornography and violence which would result in negative influence on children. The believer agreed, but he also added that children would have at least two happy hours in his store. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that after two happy hours in the comic book rental store children would be reprimanded by their parents and punished by their teachers. Their pain would actually last longer. This man replied that he was not the only one who opened a comic book rental store. There were many more in this country. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche indicated that this man didn’t believe in the law of cause and effect.

Anything you do will follow the law of cause and effect. As long as you have once shut any animal in your past lives, you will be imprisoned as well. Those who do not believe in the law of cause and effect would ask, “Others are also corrupted. Why are they fine but I am not?” From one perspective, those other people still have virtues left, so their corruption will not be discovered now. From another perspective, perhaps you are the one who still has virtues, so you are caught and shut in by the police to prevent you from doing any evil deed again, which will reduce your karmic retributions in the future.

“Eight Winds” is the eight worldly methods and the powers to make us reincarnate since all sentient beings like to be praised and dislike to be diminished or disparaged. Which eight methods are “Eight Winds”? These are just terminologies and are not important; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would tell us about those later. We will be affected by the eight worldly methods because of our greed, wanting someone to praise us, or fearing others to slander us, etc.

Practicing Buddha dharma is not to let you ask for health, ask for wealth, or fulfill your desires. It is also not correct to practice Buddhism even for one’s own enlightenment. What is the correct motivation? The motivations for Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana are all different; their vows are different as well. Hinayana’s practice is to attain the achievements of Sravaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Arhat; its motivation is for self-liberation; so Hinayana Buddhist treats everything in the world as troubles. For example, monks in Thailand cannot touch any female, do not cook, and do not even wear Buddha beads for fear of any trouble. Mahayana’s practice is not only for one to liberate one’s own birth and death but also for one to take Bodhisattva’s path and to benefit all sentient beings. Vajrayana’s practice is to help all sentient beings settle in a land of self-cultivation such that they can successfully attain Buddhahood one day. The vow made by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is to help all sentient beings until all sentient beings attain Buddhahood. This is the kind of the vow made by Vajrayana practitioners. All dharmas of tantric practices are generated due to the vow power of Vajrayana. All in all, practicing Buddha dharma is not for one’s own benefits; one should truly practice Buddha dharma selflessly and devotedly for the benefits of all sentient beings from the bottom of one’s heart.

We cannot live long without Buddha dharma. The thing that cannot live long is not only our body but also the wisdom of our dharma-body. The wisdom of our dharma-body is destroyed not by other people, but by ourselves. Some person left some venue of Buddha dharma practice and said that he had no complain for the master, but he left because some dharma brothers in the venue did not do things right. After all, whom did you learn Buddha dharma from? When your vow is different from your guru’s vow, you will gradually leave the guru.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart and His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s heart are tightly connected. Connecting tightly does not mean that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche see each other or call each other every day. It is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has begun to achieve the vow power of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, although what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has done cannot compare with the perfection and successfulness of what His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche has done.

We should regard all sentient beings as the nature of the male and female Yidams. After attaining the achievements of Mahamudra and Dzogchen, we will know that Buddha and Bodhisattva’s heart and all sentient beings’ hearts have no difference and are exactly the same; it is only that Buddha has already been enlightened, but the minds of ordinary people are obscured by stains. Other people’s appearances seen by you are completely created by your mind. Originally, all sentient beings are the same. However, we only see other people’s faults and do not see our own mistakes. If we can regard all sentient beings as the male and female Yidams, then how will we feel troubled towards the Yidams and the guru?

Five years before Drubwang Rinpoche passed away, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already completed the reconstruction of the golden roof of the Drikung Thil monastery, Drubwang Rinpoche asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to resume a special dharma puja of Drikung Kagyu order which had been a tradition of Drikung Thil for a long time. Each year in December in Drikung Thil, lamas would take turns and recite the Six-syllable Mani Mantra continuously for forty-five days, twenty-four hours a day without interruption. This tradition had been suspended since the Cultural Revolution. And Drubwang Rinpoche wanted Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to restart this tradition. Why did Drubwang Rinpoche ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for doing this? That was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a person who keeps his promises; even Drubwang Rinpoche had already passed away, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued doing it, except last year. A donor donated big money last year to support the conduction of the puja. Because of that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then used the money originally prepared for the puja to buy a statue of One Thousand Armed Avalokitesvara for Drikung Thil. Drikung Thil monastery had never had a statue of One Thousand Armed Avalokitesvara before. Before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to support this puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had also asked for His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s permission for maintaining the puja year after years. The reason for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to support the puja every year is not for acquiring merits; then what is the reason? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did that, first, for the Drikung Kagyu lineage, second, for the world peace, and third, for continuing the transmission of Tantra. In the Dharma-ending Age, the virtues of all sentient beings are not sufficient for the transmission of Tantra to be continued unless such puja is held. Supporting the puja requires three thousand dollars of RMB (Ren Min Bi or China Yuan), which is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s money. Each year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would dedicate the merits of supporting the puja to all those sentient beings who had made offerings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for helping those sentient beings to liberate from the cycles of rebirth and death. For this puja-supporting money, it could not tell clearly that which part of the money was earned by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself and which part of the money was offered by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples; it should all be Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s money. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dedication prayer let everyone all benefit from the ocean of the merits.

A disciple asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that if the disciple’s boss, who was owed more than one million dollars, could collect the money back? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advised that it was because of his boss’s avarice to run into debt. If far from greediness, how would it be collapsed? The disciple was not helping his boss to overcome the situation, but rather he was afraid of losing the year-end bonus. If the boss could have collected his money back, perhaps the karmic creditors would further become enemies. Perhaps, the boss might lose his life if he collected the money back. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche repeated that why you are stolen is owed to your merits, and further continued on an example. Once a man was stolen an important thing. The man made an offer with his precious treasure to pray for help from his guru’s ritual blessings. After the first time his guru performed the ritual, he did not get back the thing. The man made an offering again with more precious things, but the stolen thing could not be found still. The man made more offerings, and the stolen thing came back to him finally. You know that those commercial collectors would take forty percent of the money as the commission. The disciple made the offering with a tiny amount to pray for help from the guru and the Bodhisattvas, thus the Bodhisattvas was turned out to become a Buddhist laborer in his mind. Therefore, if you beg the guru to help collect your outstanding debts, make an offering with the ninety percent of the money. Probably, you are predestined to lose the money. Now that your money was collected back, if you offer the ninety percent to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche you would be accumulating your merits further. The ten percent would be remained for you.

One who practices according to the Dharma would naturally become dignified and manifest on one’s complexion. Dignity is manifestation of both merits and wisdom, but not through clothing and dressing; it is manifestation of virtues. A disciple had criticized the Rinpoche for dressing with famous brands and said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is making much money from the businesses so everybody has not to make offerings to the Rinpoche. In the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught that a true practitioner, who achieved certain attainment, would get a great deal of enjoyment. The enjoyment, however, is also manifestation of dignity. Fine clothing adorns the physical body.

During the recent trip to India, a girl from Turkey, who actively asked her mother to take photos for her and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, when the girl saw and was aware of the good looking of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the dressing. The mother inquired who he is of the nearby companions and knew that he is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The mother, right upon knowing here was a Rinpoche, prayed for blessings then from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. You don’t have notions what methods the Bodhisattvas would use to liberate the beings. It is an example that because of the noble appearance and good-looking dressing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it opens chances for the beings, who has Dharma connections, to come and seek for help. Therefore, one ought to not criticize and nor to have arguments about the guru. If your mouth tickles, why not to recite mantras.

When it comes to noble appearance, imagine that if a vagrant stands beside a rich man, the rich man looks noble; if a rich man stands beside a high ranking officer, the officer looks noble, if a high ranking officer stands beside a king, the king looks noble; if a king stands beside a Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva looks noble. Through such an example, we could have a little understanding about what it means. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained merits and virtues. Therefore, the good-looking does not owe to nice clothes but due to the person wearing it. Imagine that a vagrant put on a nice clothes, it would not be looking good.

Wonderful things will appear naturally because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has obtained virtues. Just like when purchasing Jewelry, Jewelry that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw were always nicer and better than what the Jeweler saw. It is as if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a magnet and he has good things to eat, nice clothing to dress and wonderful place to live. These good things are attracted naturally. Yet these things do no belong to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche because everything disappears after death.

We must rely upon a sublime spiritual friend. A sublime spiritual friend does not mean he understand many Buddha Dharma but a person who knows how to use the sublime Dharma to help you liberate from the ocean of reincarnation and obtain Buddhahood. Once there was a disciple who reverently asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the reason why he was able to give in to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche completely and to make such a great offering, whereas none of us could? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche answered: I don’t know! It is because people’s heart is changeable and only Buddha knows how people’s heart changes. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche really does not know how disciple’s heart and mind will turn into at the next moment: One second ago he has confidence in guru but the next second he starts to have his own opinion to guru’s enlightenment.

With sufficient virtues, like those of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s, one will then arise confidence upon seeing the guru and hearing guru’s teachings. One will arise doubtful heart if he does not have enough virtues because he had not obtained achievement from past lives. Therefore, the guru will unceasingly create many causes and conditions for us to have the opportunity to accumulate virtues.

The great Gampopa said, “If one leaves the mother-like sentient beings, he will thereby leave the virtuous ones and the Mahayana Buddhism. Whatever the guru conducts or speaks of is for the benefit of the sentient beings. A guru will never abandon any sentient beings. When the guru kicks some people out or scolds them severely, it may appear to be an act without compassion. However, if one has doubts in his heart about the guru, he will either have a lot of obstacles in current life or let himself fall into the Vajra Hell, which is the so-called Avici Hell in Exoteric Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is so compassionate as to kick such a person out and thereby prevents him from creating any further evil karma. If a guru sees that you are committing a deed that will bring you down to the hell but doesn’t tell you, he will break his vow which was taken in order to benefit the sentient beings on their path to Buddhahood. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t value fame, wealth, or emotions. You might say, “Aren’t the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas compassionate instead of being so emotionless?” The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas take the law of cause and effect and the karmic forces into consideration and help the sentient beings in accord with their conditions. The worldly emotions you are talking about are actually afflictions! Nonetheless, you all live in your emotions and regard yourselves or losing a son as extremely pitiful.

According to the historical records, the master Ji Gong stayed in Tibet for a long period of time. From the Buddhist perspective, what he did showed proof of his attaining the Siddhi of Spranbrala Yoga. He appeared to be lunatic and conducted unreasonable deeds on purpose. Nevertheless, it was his demeanor that allowed him to reduce the cause and conditions with the sentient beings. Thereby, it could be seen that certain sentient beings really had the cause and condition with him. He was just like a child who would pretend to be a mother or a father at play. When we see that the game played by children is a fake one, the guru, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas regard our conduct as playing games. As a child at play may stop the game at any time, the guru, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas will leave at any time, too, if they see that you are still unwilling to change yourselves and have run out of your cause and condition.

As one’s mind is set on the past, present and future, all inner and outer phenomena are brought forth, as which should be taken the nature of dream and illusion. One should not cling to all the phenomenon and circumstances. There is no time difference between the past, present, and future. In the universe, time does not exist but only be created by our thoughts. You keep regretting the past and worrying about the future. Even at the present moment, you are thinking delusively, all day long wandering about things unrelated to liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Countless thoughts constantly arise and cease, and on the process your mind can not be concentrated. Sometimes the past, present and future come over altogether.

Actually now is the future. What we do now is sowing the seeds of the cause for the future. What happened are passed away. However we will bring what happened to the future if we continue thinking of them. Some people live in the past all the time, thinking that, for example, there was someone who did wrong to me, or my son was dead, etc. However, the past is the past. To plan for the future is the same case. You always concern about if you can own a house, or if children will look after you when you are old. You are making a lot of plans like these. The disciple whose mother just passed away has many siblings, however, when their mother was dying there was no one accompanying her. Their mother stayed in the intensive care unit and passed away, attended upon by doctors and nurses.

Some people may ask if it is no need to plan the future, why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the future, in our hands, is determined by the present? In fact, what you are doing now create the future causes and conditions. If you do well at present, the future will be bright even without an advanced plan.

Who has not thought about the past or the future? All of you have thought about it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, however, does not recall the past gratitude, resentment and affection. It is not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has no affection. One who has no affection is not able to possess the heart of compassion through practice. Nevertheless, just let the past be the past. One does not have to worry about the future that has not happen yet. Only the present is real.

Your thoughts are unceasingly vacillating. It’s because you have not cultivated your mind. That’s the reason why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to effectively and quickly finish up things. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has reduced the extent to which his mind is fluctuating, being able to focus on completing one thing at a time and always in the state of deep meditation. You tend to complicate matters. For instance, you like to play complex computer games. However, the teachings of Buddha Dharma are to show us the importance of simplicity.

A female disciple made acquaintance with a man with children, thinking that she has found her a true love. She was foolish enough to travel to Tai-Chung to take care of his children. She thought her love was powerful without understanding that her behaviors would have done damage to herself and the man. Even if they will get married in the future, perhaps that man will hinder her advancement in learning Buddha Dharma. Internet is the worst invention in the world. When a woman feels boring and lonely, she’d log onto all kinds of web sites to search for friends. As she makes a male friend, she may think she has found a true love. Yet, the friend might just be one of her karmic creditors. Please don’t ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche whether this man or this woman is suitable for you or not, unless you have asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s opinions when you decide to hold each other’s hands or kiss each other.

Is it very different to listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma teachings? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is in the dharma state to enlighten sentient begins so he doesn’t have to prepare for a draft and is able to talk continuously. Unlike other Buddhist practitioners who have to read aloud sutras word by word and explain the dharma texts according to their life experience, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche simply opens a sutra and with its beginning he can teach various contents not depicted in the sutra.

When you listen to pure and clean dharma with your own thoughts, the meaning of the dharma will be contaminated, so will your mind. Diamond Sutra depicts that if a Bodhisattva thinks what he is doing is to liberate sentient beings, he is not a Bodhisattva. Some ordained disciples think they are learning Buddha Dharma in order to liberate sentient beings and then to achieve enlightenment. These thoughts are all wrong.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenments today are very important; you should listen to them, accept them, and use them in your daily lives. Only you would separate your lives from Buddha dharma. If you separate your lives from Buddha dharma, the guru could do nothing to help you.

Buddha taught Buddha dharma for forty-nine years; His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche has reincarnated eight times; and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has also continuously and patiently persuaded and enlightened all sentient beings; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would enlighten all disciples until they could listen. If one could listen, one would become better in the future. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not know when everyone will listen. When seeing all kinds of the sentient beings’ bad habits, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not feel annoyed, but does feel tired. Recently on TV, some singers who are Christians or Catholics would publicly announce that they praised the Lord and Jesus Christ’s glories. But you Buddhists did not dare to speak that you were helped by Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and the guru.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not be angry with you. When seeing you doing evil deeds, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will definitely stop you; when seeing you doing virtuous deeds, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will neither encourage nor stop you. In addition, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will try every possible ways to help you attain Buddhahood.

In addition, all of the disciples have voted for hosting the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses of 2010 conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Among them, there were six disciples who voted against the conduction of the puja for they worried that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be too tired to preside over the puja. They should have known that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could even sacrifice his life to respond to all sentient being’s implorations of Buddha dharma’s help. If these people were really worry about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s being too tired, they should have not asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for helping their matters all the time. One of them even had often brought his wife to beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help before. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche announced that the six persons are forbidden to sponsor the two grand pujas of next year by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. All the money of their sponsoring the pujas in the past will be returned to them. Moreover, they are forbidden to attend the pujas. They do not need to make the offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and to sponsor the Buddhist center. These are to fulfill their wishes.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

December 13, 2009

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over a regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei and, during the puja, continued to give enlightenment on Master Gampopa’s teachings about the three requirements to truly practice Buddhism Dharma.

The most important thing for practicing Buddhism is to cultivate one’s heart. No matter how many sutra or mantra you have recited or how many prostration you have made, it will all be useless if the heart is not right. Ordinary people’s hearts are all covered by the five poisons: greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance and delusion. Every thought the one arises is selfish and is only for him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been advising us earnestly and kindly that every moment we must watch our heart with care and we must not indulge our heart at all. Before the time you came to see refugee and practice Buddhism in this life, everything you had done, said or thought are nothing but evil and are selfishly for your own benefits, not to mention the evil karma accumulated from past lives. As written in the Sutra of The Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva that every thought an ordinary person arise is a karma as well as a sin.

Every second, a practitioner will pay attention to his own thought. As soon as an evil thought arises, he will notice it and repent immediately before any evil deed take actions. He will also contemplate the source of the thought and review the reason of having such thought. Not only evil deed can generate evil karma. Evil karma will be generate when evil thought arises.

During the ceremony of your seeking refugee, the guru has taught everyone to stop all evildoings and do all virtuous deeds. In this way, the power of evil will no longer increase and the power of virtue will then begin. Otherwise, the power of evil will increase and repress the power of virtues, unless the power of virtues is much stronger than that of evil. Virtues and evils are just like two parallel lines that the good karma resulted from virtuous deeds cannot remove the evil karma resulted from your evil deeds. During Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s trip to travel abroad this time, he still had a bang on head once when entering the car. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very glad that he could pay back another karmic debt again. It was only because of practicing Buddhism; only the surface of the skin was scraped. Your head might have been broken and bled if such incident were to happen to you. Even a practitioner like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who has achieved attained accomplishment will till have the karmic result, how could you think that everything will be alright to you?

Being in the hospital operating room is like being suffering in the hell. One who have received operation in this life, it means the cause of your falling into the hell of knife and sword has begun. It is like those sentient beings in hell whose limbs are cut off over and over again. Those who have been implanted with steel nails to the bone will suffer in the hell of gold and copper. From Chinese Medication’s perspective, one’s life gate is damaged should one have received operation on the back. His vigor was seriously damaged and therefore it is impossible for him to practice tantric practices. For those who wish to practice tantric practices, they must avoid having operation unless it is unavoidable. Then there is nothing can be done. The medical treatment nowadays is apt to perform operation or chemotherapy. It seems that the problem is solved temporarily but the body condition will become worse after sixty-year-old. As early as the age of physician Hua Tuo of China, he already knew to cure illness by operation. However, for such fierce treatment like operation has been abandoned since the Song Dynasty. It was because the sequela was already known.

There is always a cause for one to receive operation in this life. It is the serious killing karma of his, his family’s or his ancestors’. Though having some fights and injuries in this life as well as contracting skin cancer before, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never had any operation. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not have any killing karma due to the practices from accumulated lives.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has taught every disciple to practice the Mani Mantra everyday in order to increase everyone’s virtuous thoughts. Practicing the ritual of dharma protector is to strengthen the heart for practicing Buddhism. In fact, it is nothing to do with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche whether you have practiced or not. Yet only when you can truly practice as taught then the light of Buddha can shine on you.

Before the puja commenced, a disciple shared with the attendees that her mother, who had passed away the previous week, had seen the Dharma Protector Achi riding a horse led a group of people to circumambulate her and then departed. Her mother hadn’t had any suffering from illness before she died. But, her mother never sought refuge. What she had done was to charter a coach and gather her relatives to travel to Taipei from Yilan for attending the indiscriminating great Amitabha puja for transferring consciousnesses. In addition, the disciple’s mother often wrote “Thank you, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche” in her diary. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained that it was this disciple’s daily practicing of Dharma Protector Achi that enabled her mother to receive the protection from the Dharma Protector. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her mother to make repentance. That’s she had the cause and condition to be liberated by the Phowa. In the meantime, another cause was that her mother had kept praising the guru in her heart.

Therefore, it is the reason why you are asked to practice the Dharma Protector every day. As the Protector Achi has her own pure land, whose inhabitants are all female, Achi will appear to take you to her pure land on the point of your death as long as you have conducted the practice of the Dharma Protector Achi properly in ordinary time, prayed to Achi in repentance, and carried out the teachings accordingly. You are a motley crowd and have no chance of attaining Buddhahood in this life. Hence, you must go to a pure land. If you don’t go to the pure land of Buddha Amitabha, you may pray for going to the pure land of the Dharma Protector Achi as well. Some people who want to commit suicide every day never really carry out the act because of the refuge of the guru and the Dharma Protector, who have prevented them from realizing their thoughts. In fact, one who commits suicide doesn’t have mental problems. His conduct results from the extremely heavy karma of killing created by him and his ancestors. When his desires are not fulfilled, he will not dare to kill others and will kill himself instead. If one who has taken refuge still thinks of committing suicide, it is because he has accumulated heavy karma of killing life after life. Another reason lies in that he has killed lives and never treasures lives.

Some disciples have sought refuge for a long time, but their ancestors have never been liberated. As long as such these disciples make an offering, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would see that they have been followed by their ancestors. If one’s ancestors are liberated, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not see them. As long as the ancestors from any of your lives are still in reincarnation, their genes will make influence on you.

Don’t think that your ancestor’s evil karma has nothing to do with you. In fact, you all share the mutual karma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took his own family as an example to warn us the horror of killing karma. The great grand father of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got rich by farming silkworms and selling silk. Therefore, all the male descendants have heart diseases and high blood pressure. From every angle, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s younger brother is seen as a good person as he doesn’t lay his hands on illegal money or act as a womanizer. He shows filial piety to his parents too. However, because he loves to eat meat, he got a hemangioma all of a sudden and passed out. The younger sister of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has lived a responsible life without committing any great evildoings, but she had to undergo a surgical operation for her brain blood vessels. Nonetheless, it is because the familial bond that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the practices for them. Now, his younger brother has recovered and his younger sister could leave the bed to walk the day after the surgery. The Canadian doctors were amazed, thinking that Chinese people have a different physical constitution. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can only save their lives but not change their karma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can save them once, but not twice. As to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s second eldest sister, she had meningitis at a young age. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used to have high blood pressure, too. Nonetheless, with Buddhist practice, it healed without being treated with any medication. In addition, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has severe scoliosis, which is related to killing karma as well, and his spine bends 30 degrees at the neck. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s head is not lowered. All of these depend on the powers from the Buddhist practice, for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has liberated almost all of the silkworms having killed by his ancestors.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s maternal uncle was a decent person throughout his life as well. Being the major fish vendor in a big market in Hong Kong, he always gave more to his customers and never took advantage of them. He died of throat cancer, and his wife died of lung cancer. Both of them died young in their fifties, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s maternal grandmother passed away alone in a nursing home. In the school years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to his maternal grandmother’s house for meals. The food was bought with the money earned and given to his grandmother by his maternal uncle, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche shares such karma with them. In addition, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had loved to eat seafood, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used to have skin cancer, which healed without any medication as well. As long as you use the money gained through killing lives to support your parents and children. All of them will share the karma and receive the karmic retribution.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never forced his mother to learn Buddhism and merely told the advantages of learning Buddhism to her. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche believes that his mother will come to learn Buddhism if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continues to learn Buddhism and achieve accomplishments so as to accumulate merits for his mother. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made it and his mother began to recite the Buddha’s name and adopt the vegetarian food too. The reason why your parents wouldn’t learn Buddhism lies in that you haven’t corrected your own conduct.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the disciple who was in charge of Japanese translation for the event calendar posted on the website of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center shirked the responsibility and had an elderly person, who was in his seventies, take the blame. The disciple explained that she had failed to carry out the task because the elderly person hadn’t done it. It was not a Buddhist conduct at all. Thereby, she was punished to stop attending the pujas for a year and making any offering to the guru. It is because that the contents of the event calendar are language prajna, which benefits the sentient beings. However, she had failed to carry out the task with sincerity, shirked responsibility for her part, and even blamed another person for her own failure. As it was a matter about the guru, the fact that she had failed to carry it out showed that she has no reverence or faith in the Buddhist teachings.

Why such a harsh punishment was given? It is because the guru sees your problems and thereby reminds you so as to enable you to correct the mistakes. If you hide yourself in a far-away place and regard yourself as having no problems, you actually have no merits because you don’t have the opportunity to let the guru know about your mistakes and correct them for you. Do not think that one will not fall into the hell as long as he has taken refuge. If he doesn’t practice, it will take place all the same. If you don’t think you have mistakes, you cannot correct them. When a disciple does something wrong, why does Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche appear to be awesome? It is because you won’t be afraid or correct your mistakes if you don’t see the awesome look. Just like the parents want their child to be good and well-mannered, they would scold him with a awesome look because the child will only change when feeling afraid.

Teachings of Vajrayana is more impetuous and therefore the speed of the result is faster. It is like seeing a Chinese medicine doctor. Some doctors may prescribe medicine of strong effect. When taking strong medicine, one may at first feel uncomfortable. However, after accommodating oneself to it, one will recover faster. The teachings and methods Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche uses are of Vajrayana, as if medicines of strong effect to correct your shortcomings. If you still have lots of thought of your own, you do not adapt yourself to the teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Gampopa has enlightened: before one is able to transfer the Five Poisons into the means of practices, one has to seize the time tightly to truly practice Buddha-Dharma.

Human beings’ several kinds of desires and afflictions result from the Five Poisons. And due to a discriminating mind, people are attached to identification of good and bad, right and wrong, and thus they do evildoings continuously. During the time of the Shakyamuni Buddha, all of his disciples had achieved the position of shravakas. At the very beginning Buddha Sakyamuni taught Hinayana that is suitable to the ordained people to sit in meditation and introspect oneself faults 24 hours per day. But knowing that the karma of beings of the Age of Semblance Dharma and the Age of Dharma Decline would be getting heavier, Buddha Sakyamuni started to teach Mahayana about the practice of the bodhisattva’s path in the middle of Buddha time. It is depicted in the Sutra that the Layman Vimalakirti and Buddha Sakyamuni are of the same era. Having his own business, wife, concubines, and female entertainers, Layman Vimalakirti is a lay practitioner who had attained Buddhahood, indicating that not only the ordained but also the lay are definitely able to attain Buddhahood as long as practicing right dharma. Layman Vimalakirti once was present with the sickness. And Buddha Sakyamuni asked two great Bodhisattvas, Manjushri and Samantabhadra, to pay a visit to him. During their visit, Layman Vimalakirti gave talks about the doctrines of Mahayana in the way of several questions and answers. It was also the two great Bodhisattvas’s inquiries that developed the conditions of the Buddhist enlightenment by Layman Vimalakirti.

In the practice of Hinayana, afflictions are harmful and should be eradicated. Even eating and sleeping are thought as one of the afflictions. To practice Hinayana, one has to become a monk or nun and it also takes a long time to practice. However, the afflictions of the ordained nowadays increase, let alone to be eradicated. Ananda, the main disciple of the Buddha, was beaten to death even he had magical power. His karmic effect couldn’t be changed! Since what he practiced was an arhat’s practice, by which he could obtain liberation the cycle of birth and death, but couldn’t change the karma. However, in practice of Vajrayana, one’s guru is able to help the disciple to change his karma through his blessings.

Therefore, Mahayana is more applicable to lay cultivators to transfer the afflictions into enlightenment for the practice of the Six Paramitas. When afflictions arise, practice the mercy, compassion, and Bodhicitta as the antidotes against them. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches disciples, before going to sleep, to use the Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices to introspect themselves whether or not they live accordingly in daily life, whether or not they transgress any precept or make any evildoing. Each practice of the Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices is the practice of heart. Only to achieve the Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices, one can develop the mercy, compassion and Bodhicitta.

Gampopa has taught us: to hear all sounds in the world as yidam’s mantra, and to see all man and women as male and female yidams. As everything in the world is the manifestation of yidam, how could we still generate affliction to it?

In the practice of Vajrayana, it is to employ the afflictions as the means of practices. Afflictions neither arise nor cease inherently, but only arise and cease from causes and conditions. If one knows where afflictions results from, then one is able to practice not to generate it. In the practice of Vajrayana, the Five Poisons are turned into the Five Wisdoms so as to benefit sentient beings. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolds you in anger and you feel so scared that you start to make a self-examination and repentance. You, however, are not able to employ the Five Poisons as the means of practices now, therefore you ought to keep precepts, practice the Six Paramitas, harbor a complete reverence as well as completely surrender yourself to Guru and Buddha-Dharma, and accordingly follow and practice the teachings. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was scolded by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wholly accepted it without any resistance or generating any thought in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart.

True practice is to truly apply the teachings of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Guru into one’s daily life, to introspect every minute and second, when a thought arises, whether or not disobey the guidance of Guru or transgress precepts, and whether or not cease evil and practice virtuous deeds in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings bestowed by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Guru.

Master Gampopa had enlightenment that before one could liberate from the cycles of reincarnation within the three realms, one has to seize the time tightly to truly practice Buddha-Dharma.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment that the three realms are Realm of Sensuous Desire (Kamadhatu), Realm of Form (Rupadhatu), and Realm of Formlessness (Arupadhatu). The earth where we live is in Realm of Sensuous Desire which is still within the six realms of reincarnation. Practicing meditation can let one attain the level of the Formless Realm; however, he would still have to reincarnate. Since one who attains the level of the Formless Realm may think that he has already attained the achievement of liberating from the cycles of reincarnation, he keeps his mind in such a state for a very long time but is unable to leave the state. During practicing meditation at the retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then realized that this is in deed the case. However, the differences between them are extremely tiny; and it is very easy to practice it wrong. Practicing Mahamudra meditation can help you and will not let you attain the level of the Formless Realm. The preliminary stage of Mahamudra meditation practice and general meditation practice are the same, but the later stages are different.

Exoteric Buddhism teaches one to practice from the causes of attaining Buddhahood and says that all sentient beings originally had the same nature as a Buddha; because of an ignorant thought since beginningless, worries were generated; and worries caused the sentient beings to generate karma; eventually karma made all sentient beings to reincarnate. However, in Vajrayana, it says that the process of reincarnation has a beginning and an end because Vajrayana teaches one to practice from the result of attaining Buddhahood; it knows that Buddha and all sentient beings originally had the same nature and had already attained realization on the causes of the reincarnation, where the reincarnation had come from, when the reincarnation had begun, how worries had been generated, and how reincarnation could be eradicated.

Only Buddha can clearly see the first generation of life at the beginning of one’s reincarnations. But because we cannot personally meet Buddha himself, Exoteric Buddhism thinks that the beginning of one’s reincarnations started many generations ago; and because there were too many generations, we cannot see the beginning of these generations; hence, this is considered to be beginningless. This result is derived from logical deduction and therefore can only be regarded as a speculation. However, the Vajrayana teachings think that the qualities of all sentient beings are the same, all have Buddha’s nature; because of the worries and karmas from one’s past generations of lives, one would start to reincarnate continuously; as long as the worries are not generated and the mind is not moved, one’s reincarnation will be ended. The cycles of reincarnation started from worries; after attaining Buddhahood, one’s reincarnation will be ended.

It will take a very long time to find the causes of affairs from its causes, including discovering how the seeds are planted in the soil, are germinated, take roots, and grow to fruition. Vajrayana teaches one to start the practice from the result, knowing that sentient beings all have the nature of attaining Buddhahood and then begin to remove things that should not exist. The time of practicing from the result should be much faster; if one knows first what the fruit is and directly plucks the fruit off, removes the stems and leaves, and peels off the skins, one can then eat the sweet fruit. Of course, you cannot remove the stems or peel off the skins by yourself, you must depend on the guru of Vajrayana to help you; empowerment, blessings, prostrating to Buddha, or making repentance prostrations are all the methods to help you. But your enlightenment is not determined by your own sayings; it certainly must be confirmed through your guru.

Your minds now are all very gross, not very subtle. Reciting sutras, prostrating to Buddha, and making repentance prostrations belong to practices of training a gross mind. The practice of training a subtle mind really depends on meditation, but you cannot do it now. Actually, the true practice of really liberating from the cycles of reincarnations must rely on conducting retreats continuously. But before you could have the causes and conditions to conduct a retreat, you should follow the guru’s teachings, use Buddha dharma in your life at any time, and constantly examine your minds and thoughts. Before you will act on an idea after it is generated in your mind, the karma has not been generated and you can repent immediately to suppress the karma. Once karma is generated, regardless of a virtuous or an evil one, it will let you reincarnate. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is in a meditative state within the teachings and the vows of Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and the guru at any time.

Master Gampopa had enlightened us that before one could attain the uncontaminated Nirvana, one has to seize the time tightly to truly practice Buddha-Dharma.

Before a Bodhisattva has attained the undefiled lucid state, the Bodhisattva is very likely to relinquish and change his or her vow of liberating all sentient beings. After escaping from the cycles of reincarnations, one will still arouse one’s mind and heedlessly create ignorance. If one does not watch over one’s own mind, it is very easy for one to fall into the cycles of reincarnations again. Bodhisattvas generate thought by the causes and conditions. However, Bodhisattvas know how to supervise their thoughts, which you can’t achieve now and in the future. Therefore, Richen Dorjee Rinpoche wish to help his disciples gain rebirth on the Pure Land in this life, and continue the learning of Buddhism until attaining the Buddhahood. This is most beneficial and safest to all of you.

Learning Buddhism and children studying has the same principle. A kindergarten child cannot understand what a professor teaches at a university. When you were a primary school student, the teachers would teach and give you homework every day. You had to do your homework when you went back home. If you did not do the homework yourself and asked your older siblings to write it for you, when the date of the exam arrived, you would not be able to answer the exam questions. It is just like your participation of a puja; if you do not truly practice what you have learned in the puja after you go home, it would be useless as well. Saying that you are not wrong is just wrong. If you were not wrong, you would not have been here and would have attained Buddhahood already. Only graduate students have less need to go to classes, just like the level of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche now. A graduate student can manage himself and just waits to write his thesis. The trick of writing a thesis is to write what a professor likes to see; in practicing Buddhism, writing a thesis means to fulfill the guru’s vows and wishes. If you do not pass the exam in a school, you will have to re-study the same topic for a year; but if you do not pass the exam of your life at the time of your death, you will have to suffer for at least a thousand years.

A caged elephant, if it tries to free itself from the cage and succeeds in escaping its body out of the cage, would be put into cage again if its tail was caught. That is, even though we could accumulate pretty much good deeds analogous to the body of an elephant, a tiny evil or virtuous deed compared to the tail of an elephant would make us fall into samsara again.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stressed that the teachings on essential elements of true Dharma practices, given by Gampopa, had elaborated in recent two weeks. They are very important, which includes three aspects – ignorance and habits, thoughts arose from the five poisons, and cyclic rebirth due to the thoughts. The Master Gampopa did say, apart from these, any else practices in the world can’t be more profound.

A believer came to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche why he could not achieve the stages of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. It’s an inevitable outcome, because they must be practiced through meditation.

In exoteric Buddhism, the thirty seven qualities of enlightenment are the practices. They include the four foundations of mindfulness, the four genuine abandonments, the four bases of miraculous powers, the five sense organs, the five powers, the seven factors of enlightenment, and the eight limbs of the noble path. Regarding the four foundations of mindfulness, the first one is contemplation of the body as contaminated and foul. In the age of Buddha Sakyamuni, there was contemplation of white bones. It visualizes that one’s own body and bones decays and turns to pus and blood. However, through too many efforts on the practices, some people did commit to suicide after they considered their whole body as dirt. Therefore, the practice was not promoted gradually. The second one is contemplation of the feelings as suffering, including eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Again, it is difficult for you to achieve because it’s not possible for you not to watch TV, not to eat, or not to sleep. The third one is contemplation of the consciousness as impermanent. It refers to the mind always changes, though it is still inadequate to realize the emptiness. In the Diamond Sutra, it teaches the mind changes in accordance with non-abiding. The fourth one is contemplation of the phenomena as selflessness. In the Diamond Sutra, it teaches no attachment to the form of self, no attachment to the form of sentient beings. What is “I”? If the name, all the records and the birth place information were all removed, what “I” is at all?

Nowadays, it is not so appropriate for people to practice the thirty seven qualities because it requires the practitioner to leave the crowd and dwell at quiet places. The practitioner has to contemplate all its meanings and meditate accordingly. Thus, it is very difficult for people in this modern age. The thirty seven practices of the Buddhists that come to this world have incorporated the essential parts of the Dharma. It tells us as Buddhists what should be achieved, as the principles to follow in daily lives. Therefore, as long as Buddhists follow them, it would not be too complicated process. Worldly living and the Dharma ought to be considered as a whole. Problems occur if one takes them apart.

The thirty seven practices of Buddhists include six paramitas, which are not to be practiced one after another. If one attains the paramita of generosities and offering, the other five paramitas would be apparent as well. Since the proper conducts refer to the Five Precepts and the precepts towards one’s guru, one who makes no offering would violet the precepts towards the guru. If the precepts are violated, one would not have the forbearance, nor have perfections of diligence, meditation and wisdom. That is, if the perfection of the practice of offering achieved, the other five paramitas become attainable, except that the offerings are not wholehearted. For example, someone offered one thousand Korean dollars to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The amount is less than thirty NT dollars. Such offering was made by using the remnants and therefore it can’t be an offering. Furthermore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has no need to use Korean money. It’s an indication that the person is not wholehearted to make offerings. Although in sutras it mentioned about begging practitioners, it refers to nuns or monks but not such gurus as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche of the Vajrayana.

In sutras, it is said that making offerings to an aspiring Bodhisattva would accumulate more merits and virtues than to the Buddha. Their vows are to help you. They would turn most of your offerings into offerings to the others. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made modest remarks that the Rinpoche has not attained stages of the Bodhisattva of the first ground, but has been acting according to Bodhisattva vows.

Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche impart Buddha Dharma in the way of Exoteric Buddhism, however, these teachings actually are teachings of Vajrayana.

Those who only attend the puja and are not willing to seek refuge should not come to waste Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s and your own time anymore. Some people are afraid of seeking refugee because they do not like to be supervised. Those who haven’t sought refuge are worse than those who have broken the refuge precepts. At least they had the courage to seek refugee. Not willing to seek refuge means one hasn’t decided to stop doing evil deeds and start doing good deeds. Therefore, it is still useless for one to continue to attend the puja such that he will not obtain any blessing at all. Do not think that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can bless you. It requires complicated factors for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to be able to bless you.

The human beings on earth love to listen to the Buddha Dharma the most. Therefore Buddha Shakyamuni had bestowed Dharma teachings for forty nine years. Likewise, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been bestowing dharma teachings for more than ten years. It is as if your ears are full of earwax so that you cannot accept the dharma teachings. Your heart cannot be penetrated as if it is blocked by steel and concrete. You must listen, accept and achieve it. Also it may be because you do not have enough virtues. There is no need to say much if having great virtues. It is just like how His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche bestowed dharma teachings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The impartation ended as soon as the reciting of the dharma text finished. Then it was up to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to practice the teachings.

His Holiness has ever predicted and said in the DVD film that the guru, His Holiness, and the disciple, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, both of them will move forwards together relentlessly on the path of Buddha Dharma in the future. That is to say, both of them will be together to undertake the career that will benefit all sentient beings. His Holiness would not say anything meaningless, nor will His Holiness say something that believers love to hear. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already possessed the same vows like those of His Holiness’s.

As to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s attitude towards His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would risk his life just to carry out the task that is assigned by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche without having any explanations or excuses. Take the six performances of the Vajra Dances held in Taiwan for example, how could they have been organized? Without any experience of organizing such an event, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only knew that it must be done wholeheartedly, even putting his life at risk. The grand puja held in Taoyuan was another example. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to come to Taiwan and preside over a puja, His Holiness agreed and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thereby carried out the task with his life. One has to do his job with his life as well, for it takes 8 hours, one third of a day, which is indeed part of his life. Just put in all your efforts when doing your job. As long as you are doing something for the benefit of the company and the work, just do it without worrying about the result.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performs the Phowa successfully, the deceased person’s crown chakra will feel warm and a round opening will appear in his or her skull. Even the hair at the crown chakra will fall off. Such a phenomenon cannot be achieved simply by reciting the sutras. Why can Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perform such an auspicious practice of Phowa? His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche once gave three reasons. The most important one is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s absolute loyalty to his guru. Even until now, you people still don’t understand how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to create an opening in a person’s skull with the practice of Phowa conducted from a great distance. Now, even lamas in India are spreading the word that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has great healing powers because some lamas received help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

As long as it is something about the guru and for the benefit of the sentient beings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would complete it with all his efforts, unlike some disciples who claim to feel the pressure. The reason why you feel the pressure lies in that you differentiate between good and bad and want others to compliment on your work so as to carry out something that is beyond your capability. Some disciples complained about the painstaking work for organizing the grand puja and the huge amount of money being spent. Others are worried about not being able to find people to attend the puja. All these thoughts have been generated from one’s own perspective.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche earnestly and kindly advises all disciples and believers diligently learn and cultivate the Buddha’s teachings.

Some disciple still eats meat and the vegetables cooked with meat after taking refuge. In doing so, he has already transgressed the precepts. Some other disciple, thinking fish is more nutritious, still eats fish, asks his child to eat, and also feed his sick father on bed with fish too. It shows that he does not believe in the law of cause and effect at all. And actually he is doing harm to his father and child. That he himself who wants to eat fish is his own business. He should not have pushed his child to eat fish to do the child harm.

Some disciple still induced and abortion after taking refuge. Getting to know it, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her not to come here to learn Buddhism! She thought she just needed to make repentance to guru and implore guru to transfer the consciousness of the unborn. Actually there is no the term Infant Spirits depicted in the Sutra. That term is invented by whom on the street stalls for making profit. In the Sutra, to cause and abortion is seen as to kill an infant, which break the precept of no killing.

Rinchen Dojree Rinpoche has enlightened in the taking refuge puja that when you do something transgressing the precept, Guru would in turn treat you with the four things: no sharing, no speaking, no staying in the same room, and no giving tasks of charity. You may say that she already repented, isn’t it too cruel for her to still let her cry on her knees before Guru? However, it still depends on whether or not she already developed true repentance. Only if she has truly generated a heart of repentance could she be corresponded to Achi for praying. And then, Guru would grant her meeting again. On the other hand, it could eliminate her karma through her kneeling and crying before Guru.

Some disciple went to help a man take care his child, thinking herself to be compassionate. If she could have all motherless children on street in her care, she could then be said to be compassionate. Why did she be kind to the only one person’s child? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has talked for long, but she still could not listen to it. However, the man just said a word and she changed right away. From that the one who did not listen to guru who has significant grace to her, we could see that human’s desires are really terrible. Do not think love is mighty and you could make him gradually change. Some day he would stop you from learning and cultivating Buddhism. Under that circumstance, one ought to abandon the evil companions. As mentioned before, evil companions refer not to those who take you out for fun or gambling. Evil companions refer to those who stop you from learning and cultivating the Buddha’s teachings, and those who guide you to a wrong path of cultivating Buddhism.

Why was your child bullied at school? This means that this child was not obtained from your practice of Buddha dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often fighted with other children at school when Rinpoche was still a child; but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was never bullied by others; this means that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not have such condition. Do not blame the teacher when your child is bullied at school, but repent. If the child has enough virtues, he will encounter good teachers. Why should a pregnant woman adopt the vegetarian food and practice Buddha dharma? It is to let the child in the womb eliminate a bit of his karma. Once he is born, his karma will start to affect him.

Some people were still watching the Buddha dharma lectures of other Rinpoches on TV; they wanted to hear if there is any difference. There is only one Buddha dharma, but the teachings will be different. Some people followed the Rinpoches from Tibet or Qinghai; after listening to those Rinpoches for a period of time, they would feel little about Buddha dharma, because those Rinpoches from Tibet or Qinghai had never learned Chinese Buddhism, did not quite understand the culture and customs of the Chinese people, and did not know how complicated Chinese are. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had learned Chinese Buddhism and could tell you the differences. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held a puja, in certain areas, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would particularly ask His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche for advices; it was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not understand Tibetan culture and customs and was afraid that if these things were not handled correctly, it might cause misunderstandings.

Do not distinguish yourself from others by your practicing Buddha dharma. It has stated in the Ratnakuta sutra that if one has the cause and condition of having relatives, one should satisfy the needs of the relatives. The Ratnakuta sutra is a text particularly for the practitioners who practice Bodhisattva’s path. The sutra describes about all the behaviors of a Bodhisattva and is very important.

The next two years are not good; it is the same for this region. Like now that it is already in December, but the temperature is still so hot; in addition, there are many killing in the society; these are all bad things and the group karma of the sentient beings here. If one does not practice Buddha dharma diligently, it is very easy for one to be pulled into the group karma. Do not think that your life is hard; without Buddha dharma, many people here would have gone already. Do not have a fit of anger against the guru. You are not fighting with the guru; you are fighting with your karma, causes and effects. And you are no match to your karma, causes and effects!

December 18, 2009

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious Chod puja of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first bestowed the following teachings: Chod puja is one of the eight major Sadhana practices of Tibetan Buddhism. The meaning of Sadhana practice is saying one can definitely be liberated from life and death and reborn in the Pure Land if he dedicates to practice this practice in this life. Usually before conducting any rituals, the dharma conductor will recite mantra to fix the boundary of the altar and protect it. The dharma conductor must also wear precious objects, protection wheel and dorje to protect himself. However, these are not necessary when conducting Chod puja. The space is completely opened for sentient beings to enter. Not only the dharma conductor does not protect himself but he also transforms his body into nectar and offers his body for sentient begins to eat. You should not imitate what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does by trying to offer your body for sentient begins to eat. Your body is smelly and even ghosts are afraid to eat it. The dharma conductor will first satisfy their desire to eat, pacify their hearts then liberate them to the three good realms or the Pure Land with Buddha Dharma.

Worldly people can hear the two words “liberate someone” very often but they do not truly understand their meanings. It was written in the sutra of Buddha Amitabha that virtuous men or women who wants to be reborn in the Pure Land should not be short of merits and virtues as well as causes and conditions. “should not be short” is means “need many”, that is, it is necessary to accumulate tremendous merits and virtues. Merits can be obtained by practicing charity and obeying precepts. Virtues can be obtained by practice. Merits can be used up and whereas virtues cannot be used up. Merits are like the wealth you have accumulated that some day they will be used up completely. Virtues are like the knowledge you have learned that they will still be with you no mater if you are poor or rich. Virtuous man or woman is the person who practices the ten virtuous deeds and the first of the ten virtuous deeds is to refrain from taking life. You are not considered as practicing the ten virtuous deeds if you have ever eaten meat in this life. In fact, practicing the ten virtuous deeds is the basic principle of being a person. Anything that can harm sentient beings is not allowed, not to mention eating their meat.

Most of what you do in this life will drag you falling down to the lower three realms. Do not think that you can be reborn in the Pure Land if there is someone to recite sutra for liberating you. Take the Jeweled Repentance Sutra of Emperor Liang Wu Ti as an example: When Emperor Liang was throne as a king; he firmly believed in Buddhism and strived to establish many temples. Following what as written in Lankavatara Sutra, he ordered that ordained people must not eat any meat. At that time, his favorite concubine killed another concubine due to her hatred and jealous heart. After her death, she fell down to the realm of animal and was born as a giant snake. Therefore, she passed a message of her condition in Emperor Liang’s dream for him to save her. Though Emperor Liang had done so many things to help Buddhism, he still could not to anything to help her. It would still require Emperor Liang to ask the Master Bao-Zhi to lead the ordained people to prostrate towards a thousand Buddhas for forty-nine days according to Master Bao-Zhi’s written repentance sutra. It was said that the Master Bao-Zhi is the incarnation of the One-thousand-armed and One-thousand-eyed Bodhisattva. After sincere making repentance, Emperor Liang’s concubine was able to ascend to the realm of heaven from the realm of animal. This story told us that if one does not do virtuous deeds, does not have merits and virtues as well as causes and conditions, at best he can be reborn in the realm of heaven but not the Pure Land even though there are other people help conducting Buddhism rituals for him. Have you contribute more virtuous things than Emperor Liang? Base on what do you think you can liberate other people?

Do not think that falling down to hell is very difficult. Neither should you wait until the time comes and think that such a misery shall never happen to you. All of you don’t believe that you will fall down into the lower three realms. In fact, it only take a twist of thought to fall down to the lower three realms, very easy. On the contrary, it will be very difficult to be a virtuous man and a Bodhisattva. It is like building a house that before the structure is completed, it will take lots of efforts to build solid foundation. However, when the house is to be torn down, it only takes very short time to destroy it completely. Nobody will know when impermanence will come. Just like the mother of a disciple, she was fine before her last trip. Yet she suddenly got sick while singing on the tour bus and then died!

After reciting Buddha’s name at home for awhile, some of you may start feeling the chillness at the back and think that ghosts have arrived. The first reason why your back feels cold is because human’s heart is at the front of the body. Body heat stays at the front and therefore the back tends to be colder. Another reason is because your concentrative recitation causes sweat on your back, therefore your back feels cold. Do not think that ghosts will come looking for you. As a matter of fact, ghosts will ignore you since you are not able to help them.

Nowadays, everyone stores the deceased’s cremated remains in a columbarium pagoda, thinking that daily sutra recitation in the place will be beneficial. Nevertheless, what people don’t know is that many ghosts show up when sutra recitation is constantly conducted. Therefore, a lot of ghosts congregate in a columbarium pagoda. Would your deceased family members be doing well there? As to the stupas in the monasteries, they are the place where the relics of their accomplished ordained practitioners are enshrined. Besides, pujas are conducted to pray the Dharma protectors to secure the four side doors so as to prevent any ghosts or devils from intruding into the stupa. It is impossible for the ordinary columbarium pagodas to conduct such practices. Therefore the Buddhist sutra teaches us to cast the cremated remains into the sea or a river so as to form cause and condition with the sentient beings.

Furthermore, the ritual of calling the deceased’s soul conducted at the deceased’s place of death cannot guarantee that his or her soul will follow accordingly. As there aren’t any rituals of calling the deceased’s soul in Buddhism or traditional Taoism, it was yet another invention of modern Taiwanese. When one passes away, his or her consciousness will not necessarily stay in the same place. While some fall down at the point of death, others ascend immediately. Still others will go to a place which he previously felt familiar with or enjoyed most in his life. When you conduct such a ritual to call the deceased’s soul, it is possible that you will call a wandering ghost instead of your own family member.

It is very auspicious and solemn to attain rebirth. Nowadays, many outsiders consider that the conducting of assisted recitation, the folding of lotuses, the burning of paper money, and the covering of the quilt for attaining rebirth are helpful to the deceased and will thereby liberate them to a pure land. Some people hire the professionals to recite some sutras but play mahjong, gossip or discuss their inheritance by the side, considering themselves taking care of the matter. Such liberation is totally useless. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is an expert in liberating others. As His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche never taught Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to carry out these aforementioned rituals or to cover the deceased with the quilt for attaining rebirth, the Buddhist sutras would state such rituals if they were required. Any activities that are beneficial to sentient beings have been given by Buddha in the sutras. In the Maharatnakuta Sutra, it states that Buddha Sakyamuni had prophesied during his lifetime that some people would take the advantage of offering the relic of the Buddha and make it a business. The sutra even states clearly as to how they will receive the relic. Several years ago, the exact scene took place in a monastery situated in southern Taiwan. Hair and flowers were spread on the ground to receive the relic of the Buddha with so-called reverence. The Buddha says that such a deed is wrong, for his relic is supposed to form a connection with those sentient beings who do not have the cause and condition. Even when one offers innumerable precious jewels to the relic of the Buddha, the virtues and merits of such a deed are fewer than those of one’s following his guru to learn a Buddha’s name or a mantra in a Buddhist center administered in accordance with the Buddhist teachings.

Some people might say that the complexion of the deceased would become better looking after assisted recitation. However, this occurs simply because the deceased’s mind will become more peaceful once he or she hears the Buddha’s name recited by someone without any desires. It doesn’t mean that the deceased has obtained rebirth in a pure land. Therefore, if one has a deceased family member at home, he doesn’t have to spend money hiring someone to conduct the assisted recitation. Instead, it should be conducted by the deceased’s family members themselves, for their hearts are the most sincere. The deceased know well about the hearts of those who conduct the supportive recitation. Hence, do not discuss the details of the deceased’s funeral beside the deceased, for such a discussion will make the deceased feel agitation and suffering. As to whether the practice conducted on the seventh day after the deceased’s death, the money may be better used to help those who don’t have money to see a doctor or to go to school instead of being used to hire someone for the practice on the seventh day.

Actually, one should not wait for the death of his family member to conduct the sutra recitation. Instead, you should recite the Ksitigarbha Sutra to the dying person during the time of his dying so that he could understand the law of cause and effect, know the faults of lower three realms, and thereby generate repentance in his heart.

When a doctor conducts malpractice or prescribes wrong medication so as to bring about the death of your family member, do not go to the hospital to quarrel with the doctor for justice. Also, do not quarrel with the company for justice when one dies at work. All of these are related to the deceased’s merits. If the deceased had had merits, he wouldn’t have gone to such a company. If the deceased had had proper merits, the quarrels would not be needed as the company would have provided compensations on their initiatives. Besides, can the deceased really make use of the compensation money? The one who uses the money is you. You consider yourself fighting for the justice on behalf of the deceased, but, in fact, do this out of greed and hatred which you wouldn’t let go of. These debts will become the deceased’s, and will be really bad for the deceased as well.

The nurse killed by the felon in that year was the first one who was liberated by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche through Chod dharma. When her consciousness was summoned by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she pointed out the time one by one when the three fugitive offenders would be arrested. At that time, the public felt sympathetic to the nurse’s family and so donated them a lot of money donated. However, the deceased’ brother already owned a mobile phone, very costly at that time! Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tried to advise their mother against getting the money through public sympathy, since her son was already twenty years old and he could start to make money to support their family. But she did not listen to it, and the public were too virtuous and continued on giving them money, thinking they were doing good but actually they were doing harm to them.

From the Ksitigarbha Sutra we are told that we ought to widely hold Buddhist activities for the deceased. Some people think their attending puja one time is enough to liberate all sentient beings they would like to hope, thereafter they have no need to continue to attend puja anymore. This kind of cognition is incorrect. The truth is that whether or not a being could be liberated depends on its merits. Without sufficient merits, a being in hell could not be liberated even by Sakyamuni Buddha. Some believers come to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but have no idea what to ask. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche intensively wants to help them; however, without their oral inquiry, Rinchen Dorjee Rinchen could not help them, since they have not sufficient merits and conditions. Being as a guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinchen always creates many causes and conditions for you have the chances of accumulating merits.

Once there was a believer who came to pray Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help his parents. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed him to do prostrations towards the statues of Buddha and Bodhisattvas in the venue for ten thousand times. That prostration he did is the very offering. Only making offering would the one have merits accumulated, and thereafter Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be able to help him. It is advised in Sutra to practice charity and make offering on behalf of the deceased with the deceased’s favorite toys such as antique and jewels. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has seen many sentient beings with attachment and attached themselves to their beloved objects, such as an antique or a painting, unwilling to leave away. Some people occupy their deceased parents’ beloved things without their agreement on handing over in advance. This doing would make the deceased generate hatred in their mind and thus fall into the evil paths.

Some people attend puja merely for their personal specific purposes, and do not show up anymore after their problems are solved. Some people only attend the Friday puja but do not attend the Sunday puja, for they think Sunday is a family gathering day. Some people say because they have to work and engage in social activities, they have no time to attend puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is also a CEO, and in the meantime Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche takes care of more than one thousand people for their birth, aging, illness, and death. Those people would like to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for help on their birth and death, and even for that their children’s disobedience or schoolwork difficulty. Do you take care of your staff in this way? No matter how busy you are, you can’t be busier than Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not even have a holiday or a rest. Even a convenience store like 7-11 would have a chance of shut down due to a power failure. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, however, has never ever stopped benefiting sentient beings before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche passes away. As for you who merely desire to earn more money have time to play golf for five to six hours, but have no time to attend puja.

Playing golf is not good. To build a golf course, a broader of trees needs hopping down and many sentient beings such as dragons lived in the trees would get hurt. For maintaining the course, it needs to spray much agricultural chemical to protect the lawn wherein the sentient beings get hurt. The sprays would permeate and intermingle with groundwater. Then, the water gets polluted. The aquantic animals are posioned. As a result, you will have to share the karma. In fact, each time you swing the club is clubbing yourself. It is really not necessary to play golf for closing your business deals. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who does not play golf in this life, is still able to carry on business dealings and relations.

The point of attending puja lies in the determination. It is like when you were in school time, you would pursue him/her that you like without the least hesitation, putting your academic study, your parents, all the other things behind. How strong the determination is! Why can’t you just make the determination like that to learn and cultivate Buddhism? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche earnestly and kindly advised you over and over again adopt a vegetarian diet and learnt Buddhism. Yet you do not listen to it.

Part of the purpose of holding a liberation puja is to liberate our karmic creditors and ancestors in the past; however, the most important purpose is to liberate our minds. Our minds are full of greed, hatred, and delusion. Yesterday, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to a funeral parlor to perform the cleansing rituals. The funeral parlor gathered a lot of deceased sentient beings; they were full of hatred, greed, and attachment; they suffered great pains but no other one knew that. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completed reciting mantras for blessings, once the nectars was sprinkled down, the whole ground became cool. After attending the puja and going back home, some people would feel very tired and sleep very well. That means that you should have a proper sleep. Usually you had too many thoughts in your mind, so you would feel very tired; and after attending the puja, your mind became refreshing.

On the other hand, the purpose of holding a liberation puja is also to eliminate your obstacles of practicing Buddha dharma. To practice Buddha dharma diligently is not only reciting mantras and making repentant prostrations; this is just one part; the most important is your mind and heart. Among the many things related to practicing Buddha dharma, the most important is the moment when you die. It is stated in Buddhist sutras that Buddha Skyamuni was well departed. The phrase of “well departed” is saying that the person will not suffer when he dies and can know where he will go after the death. Such a person can then be called “well departed”. Because Buddha had already behaved virtuously one hundred percent without the slightest evil, Buddha will not suffer at the time of dying. If one does not practice Buddha dharma diligently, regardless of a Buddhist monk, nun, or Rinpoche, the one will have many illnesses and pains before one dies. These pains are caused by the revenge from the sentient beings we have once hurt; their revenge let our physical bodies suffer first before we die. Dying is a very frightening and panic process; no one can help you; only the guru and Buddha and Bodhisattvas can help. There are not many practitioners who can perform liberation in this world. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche died, who could you find to help you? It is impossible for you in this life to attain, through practicing Buddha dharma, the same level and achievements as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Buddha and Bodhisattvas’ hands are always reaching out; and we should also reach out our hands to receive them. Do not pray Buddhas only when you need their help. You should attend pujas often, hoping to make major faults less serious and to reduce minor ones to nothing. This is like if a student is not serious and does not do what the teacher has taught him, eventually the teacher will ignore him; even if he raises his hand wanting to answer questions, the teacher will not see his hand. And if a student studies and hands in homework seriously, even if he raises his hand slower, the teacher will still see him. There are many sentient beings who need Buddha and Bodhisattvas’ help in the universe; if your hands are always reluctant to reach out, Buddha’s hands will not be able to receive you hands and guide you.

We were born into this world only for repaying and taking, repaying our debts owed in the past or taking back the debts other people owed us. Once we have repaid everything, we do not have to come to this world again. Therefore, whether happy or painful, we should live our life the same way 24 hours a day every day. The Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng said that a practitioner should not see the worldly faults. Do not say someone is a vixen again. You should believe in the law of cause and effect; both of you were also in the same fox family in your past lives, so both of you would get together in this life. Some of you thought that attending a liberation puja is good because it this could make any business competitor disappear. What does it mean to make the enemy disappear? The first is that the enemy is laid off, and the second is that the enemy is dead; it is very bad to have such kind of heart. You body, speech, and mind all will generate karma; even a single thought arising, it will have the same karmic effects. Now there are many people who are always thinking; they will get depression.

The cause and effect cannot be eliminated; if you do not believe doing evil deeds will cause bad retributions, then it will not have good results for you to attend the puja either! Buddha Sakyamuni often had headache before. This was caused from one of his past lives. In one of his past lives, the villagers in where Buddha Sakyamuni lived drained the water in the pond to catch the fishes inside. Buddha Sakyamuni was a child at the time; he took a stick and knocked the head of the largest fish for three times. Although in this particular life Buddha Sakyamuni had attained Buddhahood, he still had karmic retribution; hence, he often had headache. And all the villagers at the time also got together again in this particular life of Buddha Sakyamuni, becoming members of Sakya tribe. And the largest fish killed in the past lives became a general and led an army composed of those other fishes killed to attack the Sakya tribe and wiped out the whole tribe. Even Buddha could not save his tribe and still had karmic retribution, let alone our ordinary people.

Although you often mention that you’re afraid of death, actually you don’t because you still eat meat all the time. Some of you thought meat was nutritious and therefore forced the elderly and young children to eat it. The fact is the meat you eat is from animals bred in farms so the meat itself is full of antibiotics and unknown chemical ingredients. Because you have consumed so much meat, many of you were diagnosed with cancers. When you have cancers, surgical operations or chemotherapies will be arranged to cure the illness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been diagnosed with skin cancer but Rinpoche didn’t use chemotherapy to cure it. What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did was to ignore the existence of the illness and strive to make repentance and learn Buddha Dharma. As a result, the cancer was cured. Saying all these doesn’t intend to have you learn Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not to search for medical treatments. The reason Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was able not to rely on medical treatments is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche didn’t complain about his cancer to others. However, you are so used to tell others about your situations in the hope to receive others’ sympathy. You’d complain about your pains and your worry about cancer and dying. You will definitely have many obstacles of learning Buddha Dharma if you are used to do so.

It is incorrect to believe that you can eat meat and drink alcohol as long as Buddha is in your mind. You would be qualified to eat meat only if when you have a bite of pork or fish, you could spew a hog or a live fish, respectively. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche once enlightened that when a Buddhist practitioner has achieved the level of Anuttarayoga Tantra, he can receive everything. The meaning of receiving everything is to receive all the offerings that others make to you, rather things you purposefully search for satisfying your appetites.

You shouldn’t scold your family with Buddha Dharma. As long as you are determined to adopt a vegetarian diet, sooner or later your family will follow suit. At first, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother also rejected vegetarian diet and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche didn’t force her to change. But when she came to Taiwan, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would only bring her to vegetarian restaurants. As the virtues of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother were sufficiently accumulated, she began to have a vegetarian diet at home as well.

When attending a puja, rather than for the sake of your little self-interest, you ought to participate in it with a mind of wishing for nothing and hoping that the puja can benefit all sentient beings. Virtues cannot change your karma while merits can; and merits will play an important role at the time of your death. If you can have the same mind as that of Buddha and Bodhisattvas, a selfless mind, your merits of attending today’s Chod puja will be merged into the immense ocean of Buddha and Bodhisattvas’ virtues. The reason Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened so much about Buddha dharma prior to conducting the puja is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hoped all attendees can participate in the puja with proper conception.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued with performing the Chod ritual and led al attendees reciting the Mani mantra. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever said that such a reciting is indeed a supportive reciting.

After the ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued on advices for the attendees and said that the year 2010 will be prolific of fire and be full of such occasions as volcanic outbreaks, burns and scalds. Those who ever harmed the beings by using fire or ever barbecued with a fork would be affected by these occurrences. Take the Autumn Festival as an example, it is a traditional festival. We have no idea why, nowadays, people would like to barbecue in the festival. The smoke and smells of the barbecue would harm the protector deities and the Dakinis. If the dragons were harmed and become ill, they would take revenge. Therefore, in the next year, the patients of cancer will increase a lot. One who contracted cancer is due to impure in morality or has ever harmed many of the beings. This Chod puja is the last one in this year. It is due to many practitioners have made great efforts to help the beings, that all of us can be safe and sound in this year.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advised that one should avoid going to areas, which have volcanoes, in south part of the earth, as we have no idea when the volcano will burst into eruption. Besides, the businesses, if connected with the fire, in next year will be either very good or very bad. Since the fire will be prolific, it would be very likely that everybody has a short temper; one should learn Buddhism to change oneself. Be listening to the advices from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Don’t think that if you are sixty and your children have grown up, why you should follow the instructions to change yourself? Furthermore, everybody should be cautious about the fire in the home.

To hold a puja of more than one thousand attendees, like this one, particularly a liberation puja, if the conducting practitioner is not capable enough, he would die pretty soon. You could be here attending the puja because you posses the merits. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would like to urge you again to quit meat eating. Regardless of being converted or not, don’t take meat any more in this life. It is said in Buddha sutras that one who has a liking for meat eating will fall into hells after one’s death. Don’t excuse yourself that it’s embarrassing to refuse taking meat upon other people’s requests; think about it, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is helping you without looking for any returns from you, why you do not feel embarrassing? After the puja today, if the attendees still will not take vegetarian diet in one day, two days and the coming days, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would ask all of them not to come for the puja any more. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helps and guides you without looking for any returns from you. As an honest opinion, those who refuse to follow the advices are supposed not to be human beings. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche requests the Protector Achi to prohibit them from attending the pujas, because the Rinpoche would like to help more and more beings, and would not allow you to trample on the Rinpoche.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

December 20, 2009

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over a regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that many people are too superstitious about Buddhism. In fact, Buddhism is not a religion. Neither had Buddha ever deemed himself the inventor creator, or founder of Buddha Dharma. Buddha Shakyamuni bestowed sentient beings his practice experiences and methods of attaining enlightenment. Buddha is the teacher of the sentient beings in the suffering ocean of reincarnation. Buddhism is a type of education. Buddha had bestowed Buddhist teachings for forty-nine years and taught so many dharmas. All these were talking about the same thing, i.e. to help sentient beings liberate from the reincarnation of life and death.

One way to learn Buddhism is to read sutras and listen to guru’s teachings. The text depicted in sutras is the Buddha Dharma taught by Buddha base on his practice experiences. It is impossible for you to learn Buddha Dharma just by reading sutras on your own since you do not have the experience of practicing. You must follow an enlightened guru to learn it. Just like a person who buys a cookbook to learn how to cook. Although he takes the recipe’s quantity and follows the steps to cook, his cooking food still tastes no good. It is because no teacher was there to teach you and pointed out your mistake. However, the guru who has the practice experiences is able to tell you how to practice. Without guru’s teachings and tantric help, it is impossible to be liberated. Buddha ever bestowed tantric teachings before, which the ordinary people like you are eligible to know. The Chinese translation of “Secret” does not mean it is confidential but meaning one’s heart is very firm and tight. His heart for attaining Buddhahood is firmed and cannot be destroyed. People who live in modern society cannot see Buddha personally. Therefore, they should only depend on sutra and follow a guru to learn Buddhism.

Yesterday, an ordained believer came to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She said that the reason why the world is so chaotic now was resulted from the disagreement between husband and wife. She told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she had vowed to help these couples. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her which sutra had ever written such thing. This ordained person was able to answer any word immediately! As a matter of fact, the reason why this world is so chaotic and has so many wars is all because of killing. It was written in the sutra that family members will not gain harmony if killing has been committed. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that obviously those things were not written in the sutra at all, yet this person was full of herself and used her worldly experiences and thoughts to practice Buddhism.

There was a disciple who had worked for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company. She made mistakes everyday. Finally when the company had a final review with her, her big temper aroused then she just resigned and stopped going to work from the next day. It was bizarre that the next day after her resignation, she had a car accident with bone fractures and bruises on her face. She must have an operation because she was unable to bite and eat. The insurance which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company offers to employees cover one extra item than that of other companies. As long as the employees still work the company, they will be insured 24 hours a day for any accidents regardless of holidays or after work. Yet this disciple had got into an accident immediately after her insurance was terminated. Though the expense could be covered by the national health insurance but lots of medical expenses were charged, too. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that this disciple did not admit her mistake. She said that the mistake caused by company’s system. She was also angry with the guru. Why can’t she have a good ending by leaving the company after her replacement was found? She simply quitted and stopped working on the same day. She thought that it was not necessary for her to work in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company. It will be alright as long as she could still follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to practice Buddhism. The result was that she had an accident immediately after she left the protective umbrella.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever enlightened all of us that we should never be angry with the guru. It will let you fall down into the hell of fire just by being angry with the ordinary person, not to mention your guru who bestows you Buddha Dharma! Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: The reason why you can receive the salary is not because you go to work. It is because you help doing things for the company. When working in other people’s company, you should do your job well with your life. “With your life” does not mean fighting with your life. It means the company pays you salary to buy your time and for you to do things well. You should neither sleep at work nor constantly drinking water or wandering. Even though you are about to resign, you must still do your job well with your life as long as you are still working for the company.

You must not think that the protectress Achi will come and protect you just because you practice everyday. Protectress Achi will protect and support the practitioner like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Originally this disciple should die. However, because she had made some offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the dharma protector who protect and support Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche assigned some family members to protect her. Therefore, the protector did not help her not to die this time. They helped her keep her life is not for her to find a job in the future but to demonstrate all the people that everyone should be aware of their heart carefully. Why the accident of this disciple would make her face swell like a pig’s head? It was because she did not believe in Buddha Dharma so that the sign of falling into the realm of animal were shown. This disciple was also stingy and reluctant to make offering. Why couldn’t she eat the food in front of her? It was the sign of falling into the realm of hungry ghost.

In December, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already rejected real estate offering that worth as much as thirty to forty million NT dollars. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not accept your offering if your heart to make the offering is not correct. In these few years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already rejected real estate offering that worth as much as one hundred to two hundred million NT dollars. If one has an incorrect heart to make offering, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will still return the offering no matter how much it is. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not pursue fames and profits yet he will still accept disciples’ offering so that the disciples can have more opportunities to accumulate more virtues.

For all the offerings Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has made, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never kept the virtues as his own. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would always dedicate all virtues to the people who had ever made offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Therefore, your merits will be merged into the same ocean of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s virtues if you had ever made offering to him.

Why each year’s ten-thousand-attendee puja could be completed perfectly and successfully? The Glorious Jewel Buddhism Center is just an unknown Buddhist center. There was no TV broadcasting, no posters and yet everything could be completed so smoothly and successfully. It was mainly because of the mercy and compassionate vow power of the dharma conductor. It was also because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would always seek permission from His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche every time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinchen wished to hold a grand puja or do Buddhist activities. If His Holiness agreed, it meant that this puja could obtain blessings from Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, protectors and the guru. This puja would always be completed perfectly.

Ever since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has started to propagate Buddhism from 1997, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already expelled many people from the Buddhist center. Should Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have used the means like those of other Buddhist centers’ such as allowing everyone to do whatever they like as long as they make offering, there will be at least three to four thousand people in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center now. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche should had a very easy life if he accepted the offerings from these people. However, it is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s fault if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not point out your mistakes that would make you fall into the three lower realms. Maybe some people may say that although these people had made mistakes, yet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not merciful and compassionate enough to let them stay and practice Buddhism. In fact, it was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was too merciful and compassionate so that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not want them to continue doing virtuous deeds after their making mistakes. Otherwise, the power of their evil deeds became stronger. After seeking refugee under the guru, these people who did not listen to guru’s teachings and made mistake continuously are unashamed. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not promise them to do virtuous deeds, did not give them teachings and did not let them stay in the same room, according to what was written in the sutra.

In 2006, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led 500 disciples to India so as to celebrate His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s birthday. At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was sitting behind His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and Garchen Rinpoche on the main platform. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche told Garchen Rinpoche in Chinese that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught his disciples strictly and would adopt measures such as hitting and scolding. Garchen Rinpoche disagreed with such a teaching method and said that compassionate treatment should be given. Immediately, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche replied that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s method was correct. Garchen Rinpoche acknowledged the statement and nodded. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and Garchen Rinpoche spoke in Chinese instead of Tibetan so as to confirm that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching method was correct. After many lamas and Rinpoches in the Order knew about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching method, they also said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching method is actually the Tibetan traditional teaching method. Nonetheless, no other people are able to achieve this any longer. Without being strict, a teacher will not be able to create good students through his instruction. Even being the throne holder, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche had to learn under the guidance of his tutor after being recognized at a young age. When His Holiness didn’t do well, his tutor would deliver the instruction by means of hitting and scolding as well. The only difference lied in that the tutor would do three prostrations before hitting His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Therefore, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would run away at once upon seeing his tutor began doing prostrations.

During a disciple’s mother’s public memorial service held few days ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to the funeral parlor personally to perform a practice and cleansing rituals. Because there were sentient beings who were in need and the cause and condition ripened, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thereby provided his help. On that day, over 200 disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center attended. As having got used to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s extremely strict instruction, they all lined up orderly without making any clamor. Thereby, people who attended others’ memorial services all stood in awe. In addition, you should not be envious or jealous of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s attendance in this particular disciple’s mother’s memorial service out of the many memorial services of disciples’ deceased family members. The cause and condition of this event were complicated and beyond your comprehension.

When someone comes to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and asks about the person whom he should make offering to, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that he doesn’t have the heart to offer Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nevertheless, one has to travel far to make an offering to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t know to whom the person should make an offering since there are a lot of fake Tantric Buddhist centers and Exoteric Buddhist centers which are not administered in accordance with the Buddhist teachings. If one makes an offering to someone who doesn’t practice, such an offering will be made in vain. Therefore, if one wants to make offerings and practice charities and generosity, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advises that such money should be offered to those who cannot afford to eat, see a doctor or go to school. What’s more, one should present the money in person.

Nowadays, there are many fake Tantric Buddhist centers. Those who cannot provide details of their lineage are fake ones. Generally speaking, lineage is emphasized in a lesser degree in Exoteric Buddhism. Nevertheless, when one wants to recite any Buddhist sutra, he has to receive the guru’s oral transmission first. As to Tantric Buddhism, it is necessary to have a lineage because tantras cannot be taught in public and can only be transmitted by a guru in accordance with each disciple’s cause and condition. You people in a muddle cannot tell the difference. If one makes a wrong choice when helping others, he will be a yes man. Even a yes man can fall into the hell. If one makes offerings at seeing construction of a monastery or hearing anyone in need, his offerings will be ineffective once the built monastery does not have any practitioners or anyone to propagate the Buddhist teachings. Some people would refrain from making offerings when they find that nothing has changed with their making of such offerings. As His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche always grants many opportunities for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to conduct virtuous deeds, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always follows and carries out the instructions of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche.

The Master Gampopa said that being pure and clean is a means of nirvana. When one attains pureness and cleanness, he will thereby attain nirvana.

Being pure and clean is having no thoughts for self or self benefits. One who seeks realization is not pure or clean. It is fine for one to seek realization for the benefit of the sentient beings. However, if one seeks realization in order to make himself different from others, such a thought is not advisable. To attain realization is not to attain Buddhahood yet. It only makes you understand clearly as to what your mistakes are and how you are able to fix them. Degrees of realization include small realization, great realization, and complete realization. The condition of pureness and cleanness is illuminating in its nature without any desires, attachment, or pollution. Nirvana is a condition of neither birth nor death. Nirvana can be further categorized as sopadhi-wesa-nirvana and nir-upadhi-wesa-nirvana. Liberation from the six realms of reincarnation is still in sopadhi-wesa-nirvana, which has not reached the attainment of pureness and cleanness. Only nir-upadhi-wesa-nirvana is the pure and clean illuminating condition of the Buddha. When one attains pureness and cleanness, he will thereby attain nirvana.

A true offering is a pure and clean offering, which is made without any thoughts or desires. Even the lineage guru Marpa once returned Jetsun Milarepa’s offering, and Milarepa returned Gampopa’s offering as well. A lot of you would say that you make offerings on behalf of the sentient beings. Nevertheless, if one fails to offer with a pure and clean heart, it will not be a true offering even with the tremendous treasure which is as much as Mr. Sumeru in size. Even if you are so poor today as to have no money at all, you can still make a great offering by presenting a thread in your clothes with a pure and clean heart. If there are merely two coins in one’s pocket and he makes an offering with one of them, it will be a great offering. None of you attendees are so poor as to have only two coins left with you, aren’t you? In every offering you make, it is your heart that counts. As someone made an offering with 1000 Korean dollars, which he longer needed, he didn’t have the heart to offer at all. When making an offering, do not simply recite your lines and say that you would like to offer on behalf of the sentient beings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is perfectly clear about the authenticity of your sincerity

The practices of Six Paramitas are not to be conducted in a way that one practice has to be completed before another is started. When one is managed to make offerings and practice charities and generosity with a pure and clean heart, he will naturally be able to practice tolerance. One with tolerance will naturally be able to observe the precepts. One who observes the precepts will be able to practice in meditative concentration so as to cultivate diligently and thereby reveal his wisdom. Therefore, as one is able to make offerings and practice charities and generosity, the other five practices will appear. Hence, making offerings and practicing charities and generosity is of great importance as well as an immense necessity for a Buddhist learner.

The highest level of offering making can be best illustrated in an account stated in the Universal Door Chapter, but many people have not paid attention to it. At hearing of Buddha Sakyamuni’s praise for Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara’s merits and virtues, Bodhisattva Aksayamati would like to make an offering so as to join Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara’s sea of merits and virtues. Nevertheless, Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara refused to accept the offering. Buddha Sakyamuni advised Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara to sympathize with the sentient beings and accept the offering. Bodhisattva Aksayamati thereby made the offering on behalf of the sentient beings and Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara eventually accepted it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained that this story was a manifestation of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas which aimed to teach and guide the worldly people. If one makes an offering out of greed so as to get the merits and virtues for himself, it is no compassion. That was the reason why Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara didn’t accept the offering from Bodhisattva Aksayamati in the beginning. Afterwards, when Bodhisattva Aksayamati made the offering with compassion on behalf of the sentient beings, Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara then accepted it out of sympathy with the sentient beings so that they might accumulate merits.

The Master Gampopa said that one should start to make offerings and practice charities and generosity with water and fire.

This is an example. As Tibetan people light fire in their house, they shall do their best to provide water and fire if their visitors are in need. If one is reluctant to give away such trivial and simple matters such as water and fire, he will definitely fall into the Realm of Hungry Ghost. In regard to practicing charities and generosity, one should start to carry it out in accordance with his ability and train himself to give and to make offerings as much as he can. It means that one should offer with his own belongings without deceiving and forcing others to do it, or even sugarcoating the matter. For instance, when one asks others to give money and promise to share half of the merits and virtues once the offering is made, such a deed is a deceitful act. If one make an offering in order to give somebody a favor, no merits and virtues will be accumulated, either.

Offering includes those of wealth, dharma and fearlessness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that you now are only able to make offering of wealth, and not yet able to make offering of Dharma and fearlessness. Offering of dharma is not to merely hold a puja or worship in repentance rituals. Only by liberating beings from the suffering of reincarnation can one perform the offering of dharma; while the offering of fearlessness is the capability to free people from the fear of death and the fear of suffering of reincarnation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that when people facing the point of death, people would feel very lonely and scared. You, as ordinary people, are not able to see the suffering of the beings in the realm of hungry ghosts and hell. It is really extremely suffering. A practitioner who is able to make offering of fearlessness could liberate them from fear. A practitioner who is able to make the offering of fearlessness would always be fearless no matter where they are, even at a place of beau monde, and would not flinch at all from the atmosphere. And also, all the people would focus their eyes on him.

The first object Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche offered to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was a pair of bell and vajra made of pure gold. At that time, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was very happy and displayed them to other people. For this offering, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche felt joyful not for receiving the gold, but for realizing that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had the heart of renunciation to abandon all his favorites, which makes it a genuine offering. In 2005 during the inauguration ceremony of the Great Lotus Stupa in Nepal, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche offered His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche a Buddha statue of Lord Jigten Sumgon made of pure solid gold weighing 5 kilograms. All the offering Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was of the most precious objects. In Nepal this time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also made big offering to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche right on seeing His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows well that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would pass on the offering out for helping sentient beings.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche comes to this world for the purpose of finding out all rinpoches It needs great causes and conditions, as well as great ability to find a Rinpoche like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche among hundreds millions of mortal beings. After finding them, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche still has to teach them Buddha-Dharma for them to benefit sentient beings.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche has ever said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has a very thoughtful heart. Normally a thoughtful heart refers to be of cautiousness. While from Buddhists’ aspect there are hearts of thoughtlessness and of thoughtfulness – The thoughtless heart of refers to living a life with the Five Poisons, namely greed, hatred, delusion, arrogance, and doubt. As for the heart of thoughtfulness, it means to live a life with a heart of pureness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that all of you live your life with eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and consciousness, and by way of being self-righteous. In thus way you are living by the thoughtless heart. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has cut off all the thoughtlessness and lives by a pure, purified and thoughtful heart. You may think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche acts in an efficient and careful way and is also farsighted, while you do not. It is because you are too negligent and your heart is too complicated, so that everything you do is based on self-profit, and in way of thinking with your greed, hatred, and delusion. Not because you are foolish, but because you are too smart. Not because you do not consider, but because you think too much, in a too complicated way to have no idea how to deal with business. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that people with a gratitude and unfussy heart tends to make less mistakes, as those people think in the way of the other people’s position. If one does not consider the other side’s feeling, how can he perceive the sentient beings’ suffering and sorrow?

Have your job done well is also a kind of offering. Take Yong-Qing, Wang for example. A very rich man he was, he still worked hard and created many job opportunities for a large number of people so they could support their families. It could be taken as a kind of offering, couldn’t it? Many dharma master of Exoteric Buddhism think they could let people plant the merit field by receiving their offering, since they themselves wears the “clothes of merit field”. If it was true, why hang the “clothes of merit field” on the wall so people just make offering to the clothes? Many people may think inviting hundreds of ordained people for meals is just the same act of providing Buddhist monks with meals as mentioned in the Sutra. In fact, the monks the Sutra refers to are those arhats who completed retreat practices in the era of Buddha Sakyamuni. Now, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is sure that there is no arhat in Taiwan, though unsure whether or not there is ordained people who practice in accordance with dharma.

There is a famous Buddhist center in northern Taiwan, whose abbot drinks alcohol. One time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mentioned about this with His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche answered in laughs: the abbot can transmit only four precepts among the Five Precepts. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that one who does not observe the Five Precepts could not obtain the protection of the precept substance. As the abbot drinks alcohol, his followers are all in poor health condition. Moreover, in his temple the Sleeping Buddha statue is on left side, which is opposite to the Auspicious Sleeping Posture. Someone asked the reason why the Buddha statues were built in posture of sleeping on left side, and the abbot gave a surprising answer in saying that it was to break the attachment. As he changes the way of the Auspicious Sleeping Posture that Buddha Sakyamuni presented, whose attachment he would like to break? The Auspicious Sleeping Posture is related to the tantric practice, so here Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not going to talk much about it. If one dies in the Auspicious Sleeping Posture, one would not be reborn in the six realms, or at least would not fall in the three evil paths. Wine is used only for personal practice of some tantric execution rituals, and would not be employed in a puja. One who holds puja regardless of whether his capability could satisfy believers’ needs is doing nothing but pursuing fame. Holding puja for money is actually pursuing wealth. While many other Buddhist centers engage in this kind of business activities, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche engages in Buddha-Dharma activities of benefiting sentient beings, without a bit of concerning for fame and wealth, and without a single sense of ego. The largest obstruction does not come from one’s karmic creditor but rather from pursing fame and profit.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche originally did not accept people’s offering, for worrying lack of sufficient merits and wisdom to pay back people’s offering. Not until His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s instruction did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche start to accept offering. Besides, two years prior to the death of the Great Yogi Tenzin Nima Rinpoche of Drikung Kagyu, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche paid a visit to the elder. During the visiting, Tenzin Nima Rinpoche asked his attendant to search his retreat room and found out a total of RMB 500. Wrapped in a white khata, Tenzin Nima Rinpoche handed it over to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The incident signified that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was then able to, on behalf of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, accept offerings from sentient beings for them to accumulate merits. It is not that Guru needs your offering but the point lies in that, if you are reluctant to give the external things away, you would be attached to your body when facing death.

Gampopa has taught us: in Buddhist practice, one ought to further offer with one’s own body.

While conducting Chod ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche contemplated his body transferred into nectar to give to all the sentient beings, giving away himself entirely. It is not merely by thinking can one achieve such. One has to attain Dharmakaya to perfect that contemplation. It is similar to the cases of Buddha Sakyamuni who dug out his eye and cut his flesh for giving as a food for sentient beings. The reason why Buddha could cut off his flesh and give his body to a tiger is that the Buddha has attained Dharmakaya of emptiness. Getting rid of self consciousness, what remains is the body of karmic retribution, and therefore it could be given away.

Human are most attached to the body. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever transferred an eldest ghost who existed for four hundred years from the Ching Dynasty. The ghost was covered with grass all over and it was severely suffering. However, due to clinging to the body, the ghost was reluctant to leave, and thus became a body-attached ghost. It is stated in the Sutra that a ghost could live longest up to one thousand years. Being a ghost for so long is absolutely suffering. It is also advised in the Sutra to adopt cremation to prevent the deceased from attached to his own body. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has transferred countless beings through Phowa ritual and has never seen a single being who did not have any attachment. Taking the disciple’s mother who just passed away for an example, she was still thinking about her granddaughter after dying. Were it not for being transferred through Phowa, she would have fallen to the hell, later to the realm of hungry ghost, and then to the realm of animal.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not agree to the behavior of donating organs or bone marrow. Donating bone marrow or extracting bone marrow will cause great impacts to the donor’s body, generating many problems when the donor grows old. Buddhist sutras did not mention organ transplants or bone marrow donation. Everyone thinks that this is a virtuous deed; however, the modern medical science has proved that the genes, cells and even the personality of the organ transplant recipient will be changed. From the viewpoint of Buddha dharma, this means that the recipient has inherited the donor’s karma. Perhaps the deceased had already signed an agreement willingly to donate his organs before he died, but if he was very persistent on this matter, he would certainly go to see the recipient after he died. Now, western medicine has also done researches on this matter; there are many records tell us that for those who received organ donations, their personalities and habits would change. That is because the donor’s karma and habits had entered the bodies of those recipients. As such, the donor and the recipient will be involved together and will have to be reincarnated again to take back or repay their debts. Although some people say that donating bone marrow can help to prolong other’s lifespan, how long the lifespan can be extended? Actually how long a person can live really depends on his own virtues.

Master Gampopa enlightened, “one should further practice Buddha dharma such that one can abandon all love, eliminate greedy minds, realize and give up all of one’s faults.”

There is a particular person for love, but there is none for compassion. When speaking of love in the western world, people emphasized greatly about senses and feelings. Some people feel that love can nourish one’s life and is an important thing in life. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was young, Rinpoche was many young girls’ favorite target and had also gone out with a lot of girls; in addition, Rinpoche was very serious about marriage. But later Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche felt that these love affairs were just desires. The Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra has stated that “one who has heavy sensual desires will go to the realm of hell.” When seeing this sentence before, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also could not understand it; it is only until after practicing the Tantra, could Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realize the sentence fully. Everyone must have had such a feeling that when one is in love, seeing the lover will generate a flush of heat in your heart or sometimes even will make one blush. When your heart gets used to this feeling, you will search for such a familiar place at the time of your death; as a result, you will fall into the Hell of Fire. However, this does not mean that people should not have feelings; having no feeling cannot nourish compassion either. One practices Buddha dharma to turn feelings into compassion. There was once news on TV that a married couple died together; because the husband died first, the wife, lying in bed and holding the husband’s hands, cried for hours and then died as well. A writer will describe this as the greatness of love; but from the viewpoint of Buddha dharma, both of them have heavy attachments to their love and they will certainly be involved again after their deaths.

“Speaking kind words”, one of the four methods employed to approach and save people, is not to speak what people likes to hear, but to speak something caring and protective for keeping people from harm. However, this does not mean that if someone has feelings for you, just for not hurting his feelings, you say you love him. Such thing should not be done.

You had learned Buddhism previously in other venues for a long time and still had had no change. This means that what you had learned is useless. In this case, why wouldn’t you drop what you had learned quickly and learn from the start? If you think that you had learned for so long and it is a great pity to abandon it, it means that you cannot give things up. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had studied Taoism under the guidance of Rinpoche’s father since Rinpoche had been a child and had learned to cure diseases by drawing Taoist symbols and had had the ability to see the ghost beings. However, these abilities could not help to liberate one from the cycles of rebirth and death and to ease one’s fear of facing one’s death. After practicing Buddhism and knowing that Buddha dharma can help to liberate people from the cycles of rebirth and death, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completely abandoned what he had learned in Taoism and never used them again. For regular people, this is a very difficult thing to do. In fact, the effects of using Taoist techniques show up very fast; one can see the results right away. But if the Buddha dharma is Tantra, the results can also be seen quickly. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had conducted the Phowa dharma to help the deceased; once the Phowa had been conducted, you would immediately see the auspicious sign of a through-hole on top of the deceased’s skull, representing the deceased had gone to the Pure Land.

Why is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind very meticulous? In fact, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was young, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s personality was very eager and impulsive, described by Rinpoche’s father as “pushing the wall down”. But when encountering troubles, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could face, acknowledge, and accept the karmic retributions. When doing something wrong with Rinpoche’s younger brother at their young age, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would actively take a stick and ask Rinpoche’s mother to beat him, facing the troubles without evading. After practicing Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche learned to give himself up; because not considering his own interest and everything is considered for others, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can think about things very thoroughly.

Westerners place more importance on the idea of “I”; everything is about “I” and everything is focused on performance and competition; hence, westerners are more difficult to accept the Buddhist education. Because the traditional Confucianism teaches Chinese people to be humble for everything, they will not rush to compete for the lead; so Chinese people are more able to accept Buddha dharma. But modern Chinese people have received western education, so gradually they begin to accept less. Human beings are all persistent on the existence of oneself. If “I” was removed of the name, the identification ID and some personal records, what was “I”? “The possessions of the self” is to think that I exist. Because “I” exist, you care about praises from others, giving rise to greedy thoughts; because you do not want others to criticize you, you will have angry thoughts. “Able” is the strength generated by the actions I have taken.

The Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng left the hunter’s residence and came to a Buddhist temple. There were two Buddhist monks who saw a streamer flapping. One said, “The wind blows, so the streamer flaps.” The other said no, but, “the streamer follows the wind’s movement.” Upon hearing both of them, the Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng said, “Buddhist monks, it is your minds moving.” Upon finishing the sentence, the abbot of the temple immediately left his seat and invited the Sixth Patriarch to take the seat to teach Buddha dharma. In fact, everything is caused by the activities of the mind.

For pursuing the six sensory satisfactions of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind, people have to take actions, hence, doing bad deeds; So we call the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind as six thieves. If we think carefully, when a thief acquires other people’s properties, he will not think he is wrong; he only thinks about his needs for taking the objects without considering other people. When you satisfy your six senses, you also obtain things from outside to enjoy; this is the same approach as the thief’s. In fact, these are all illusory and unrealistic, yet people love to pursue these things. Exoteric Buddhism thinks that we should stay away from these six thieves, while Esoteric Buddhism thinks that we can take advantage of these six thieves so as to benefit all sentient beings. For example, when conducting the Phowa dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche relied on the mouth to recite mantras; how could Rinpoche punch a hole in a skull without using any sound? It also depends on the mind for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to contemplate for calling the deceased person.

You should know and abandon all of your faults. All of you do not think you are wrong. As long as you think you are not wrong, you have the greatest fault. When meeting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, some people would say that they are fine; if they were fine, they would have attained Buddhahood. To know where one’s faults are, the most important is to examine oneself with the thirty-seven practices of Bodhisattvas; When one has any place which is not conformed to the thirty-seven practices of Bodhisattvas, one should give up such behavior quickly. After you have taken refugee, it is the time for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to begin finding your troubles. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would do some of your favorite and least favorite things to test whether you still have a distinguishing mind. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not like to hear the most that someone says he has too much pressure. One has too much pressure because you hope to obtain praises and escape from criticisms. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to take care of more than a thousand disciples; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to take care of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche on the higher level, lamas and Rinpoches of Drikung Kagyu order on the parallel level, also many more businesses, and so much disciples and company employees on the lower level, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never said he had too much pressure.

Master Gampopa enlightened, “one should further practice Buddha dharma such that one can go to a path which has no association with the evil karma which will cause cycles of reincarnations.”

A true and pure practitioner of Buddha dharma should see everything as impermanence, should abandon all worries, and realize that he cannot live in this world for a long time. “True” is the truth taught by Buddha and “pure” is a pure and clean mind. What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened today is the dharma of liberation and is the method of practices contrary to the reincarnation. When persistence exists, there exist worries. One should look after one’s own thoughts and minds every minute and every second all the time. You must have relatives in the three evil realms, and if not, then you should have already attained Buddhahood.

Every phenomenon is impermanent in this world. Do not feel that you can stay in this world very long. You should abandon all the worries caused by the five poisons such as greed, hatred, and delusion. You should offer your most cherished treasure to others when the proper cause and condition comes. Human beings reincarnate because of the worries generated by the five poisons. If your mind is not affected by every dharma, that is, every phenomenon of birth and death, your mind will be able to not move. When your mind is not moving, your mind will become pure and clean; when your mind is pure and clean, you can then benefit all sentient beings.

In an airplane to Kun-ming City, the Rinpoche found the neighboring seats a couple, who were foreigners, old and spoke fluent mandarin. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked them why they spoke so fluent mandarin. The gentleman said because their family had propagated the Christian for three generations, he also asked what is the Rinpoche’s beliefs. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told him the Rinpoche is a Buddhist, afterwards the gentleman turned to aloof and distant against the Rinpoche. Later, near Yun-nan Province, the airplane encountered turbulences. The woman was terrified and could not stop screaming. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her that “you are a fine person, Christ, your lord will help you. Don’t be afraid.” Then, the woman stopped screaming right away. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not tell her that Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara would come and help her, but used a method that she could accept. It is an example to show us that any Dharma could benefit the beings. It shows no attachment. However, you are not able to accomplish it at present.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche contracted the skin cancer, a disciple, doctor, told at his good intent that the cancer in the Rinpoche was of the worse type and should be removed by surgery. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thought that as long as the disease would not affect the Rinpoche’s activities on propagating Buddhism and on helping the beings, the disease could be simply ignored. Thus, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never consulted doctors about it. Through the Rinpoche’s Dharma practices and repentance, in year 2007 during the retreat at Lapchi snow area, the scab over the skin cancer flaked off. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not mean that everybody should follow such an approach and should refuse to see doctors. Man would die, of course. However, take Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as an example. The Rinpoche’s neck has problem which bends 30 degrees forward and also the Rinpoche’s spine has a side bending problem. The mind of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been unaffected by any phenomena regardless of its appearing and diminishing. If the mind reacts with nothing to the phenomena, it becomes purified and clean. As the mind is purified and clean, the sufferings caused by the Rinpoche’s physical body would not affect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Since the Rinpoche’s childhood, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had endured extreme painfulness. When the Rinpoche was a child, one day the Rinpoche was hurt in a fight and became unable to urinate in the whole day. The Rinpoche, however, did not tell his father and also did not display the painfulness. When got divorced, the Rinpoche was not driven to distraction. When no money for meals, could no one perceive his difficulties. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche put up with those things; therefore they did not affect the Rinpoche. All the phenomena in the life are subject to arising and ceasing, come and go. Don’t attach to the phenomena; one will be free from sorrows and sufferings. While contracted the skin cancer, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held a notion that as long as the cancer would please the karmic creditors, just let go. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has made devotions without looking for any returns. People always could not read any ill sufferings from the Rinpoche. Work with full devotion of the life.

In doing business, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not consider first how to make profit, but rather based on the needs of the users or customers. It turns out that more relevant aspects could be taken into account. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has no particular knowledge to house deco, but all the craftsmen have good attitude towards the Rinpoche because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not deduct their rest amount and would fully pay the deserved amount. It is different from many other companies who often deduct the rest amount. Regardless of being an employee or an employer, we have to always bear in mind the appreciation towards the others, but not calculations.

There was a disciple, whose mother had been confined to bed for many years. Then, the disciple continually made offerings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for more than one year till her mother passed away. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her that it was because of lacking the merits that they had to make offerings for one year to help the mother escape from the painfulness. Besides, the fire of their store had killed many people. Without merits, one cannot die even though one would like to. Because the disciple has wisdom and knew to make offerings, her mother was free from sorrows and sufferings upon death. Some sons and daughters have no notion to make offerings on behalf of their parents who confined to bed, even worse they feed their parents with fish and meat and thought that the nutrition would help them. Furthermore, they even hope if their parents could live longer than they are. They don’t think that if they die, who can take care of the parents? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further elaborated that if one considers that the parents confined to bed would feel comfortable, one should try to lay oneself to bed for three days to experience the situation. Don’t ever think that such a notion is of filial piety.

Among those countless deceased Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has liberated, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never seen a being dying without any attachment. While the consciousnesses of the deceased are summoned by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they would tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche about their attachment such that one lost his gym shoes on feet, one’s ring worn on hand was taken by a person when in an ambulance, or how much money was left in one’s bank account.

Today’s puja is the last Buddhist teaching puja of this year. In next puja Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will start to practice dharma ritual, for all of you have made lots of evildoings. The teachings of this year are particularly important, that has been explained more profoundly and in more details. If you still do not earnestly cultivate the Buddha’s teachings, it might be better for you to stop coming to listen.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued on enlightening after the puja: the day before yesterday a disciple talked with an on-duty safeguard of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which made the guard be distracted. The responsibility of the guard is to keep an eye on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He While talking with others, he would be distracted from protecting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At that point, He asked the disciple how many people awaiting to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Was he tired or out of patience? Actually, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dose not need any safeguard. However the current public order is in such a mess, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as being a Rinpoche, can not beat people but employs the safeguards. Since the safeguards get paid by the Buddhist center, they have to be focused on their responsibility. They should not talk, have a relationship with, or give a present to any disciple of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. The same, disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center are not allowed to talk to the safeguards. Who can take the responsibility if an accident happens?

The Buddhist center is not the place for you to make friends. Unmarried people here may have a relationship, but they are supposed to think further for the future. Since having a relationship with dharma brother but with a result of breaking-off may let one of them leave here and stop learning Buddhism. The two people may also feel embarrassed when meeting each other again here. It’s not good to cause this kind of happening. This time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to the funeral parlor where gathered the assembly of two hundred disciples. Having been usually trained, the scene of more than two hundred people was not noisy at all. This resulted from usual training and could not be reached in one step one day. The reason that many other Esoteric Buddhist centers meet problems is because their abbot Rinpoches do not take care of things. Now Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche makes severe regulations and requirements for the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center as well as the disciples of it are on behalf of Drikung Kagyu Order and Ratna Shri. They should not make a bad feeling on other people. Besides, believing in impermanence and the unsure timing of death, maybe just right after a sleep, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to set up the rules for the center. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still here, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could subdue the assembly into submission. But if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not here, how this center will be maintained?

A disciple once told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that his heart was very complicated and he did not know what his mistakes were. It means that his disciple did not truly follow the teachings accordingly. Teachings that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had bestowed including obeying five precepts, practicing ten good deeds and achieving Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattva, he had not followed at all. How could he not know what his mistakes were if he had followed the teachings accordingly? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had always taught us that before we sleep, we should examine our body, speech and mind and see what our mistakes were. However, all of you were too lazy to calm you heart down and think. When opening your eyes, what you saw was nothing but other’s faults. You even thought that the guru was wrong, too and yet you still cannot see yours.

When you were a little kid, your parents and teachers were there to tell you what your mistakes were. When starting to work after growing up, your parents could not supervise you and your colleagues were afraid to tell you, too. Therefore your boss would fire you directly. Nobody told you what your mistakes were. Then you continued making mistake until you fall down into the hell. Only a guru like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will relentlessly find your mistakes. When seeing what you do can make you fall down into the hell, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche must tell you about it.

Earlier when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the retreat practice, His Holiness was going to bestow tantras to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche initiated to complete recitation of Hundred-Syllable Mantra of Vajrasattva for one hundred thousand times within twenty days. After this Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would ask His Holiness to bestow tantras. Though having babble voices from recitation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued reciting because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had seen that His Holiness was too busy to have time. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche worried that his heart was not pure enough so that he could not hear Buddha Dharma.

You should not have a time table for learning Buddhism. Neither should you plan in advance for achieving to a certain level after five years. If this is the case, wouldn’t you drive yourself crazy if you fail to achieve what you have planned?! Besides, you also will not know what your karma will be few years later. Just like when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the retreat practice, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not think about the results as written in the dharma text that could be achieved at all. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche simply followed what His Holiness had bestowed. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche learned Buddhism with no hurry.

December 26, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the auspicious “Dorje Phurpa” puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Kyoto, Japan. There were a total of 109 people who had attended this auspicious puja, including 21 local guests and believers, 1 Japanese disciple, 11 Taiwanese believers and 76 disciples from Taiwan. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first enlightened the transmission and pure origination of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage. There are four major schools for Tibetan Buddhism: Gelug、Sakya, Kagyu and Nyima. Dalai Lama is the dharma holder of the Gelug school. Our Lineage is the Drikung Kagyu Lineage of the Tibetan Buddhism. From the first lineage master Lord Jigten Sumgon to the current Lineage head, His Holiness 37th Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, the Lineage has been lasting for more than 830 years. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the root disciple of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma name was personally bestowed by His Holiness. For Buddhism, there are ordained and lay practitioners, respectively. Ordained practitioner includes bihikkhu and bhiksuni. Lay practitioner is allowed to marry and have children and family members. There is Exoteric Buddhism in Japan such as the Pure Land school and the Agon Shu school. There is also Esoteric Buddhism such as Eastern Esoteric Buddhism.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinchen is a lay Rinpoche who has attained accomplishment in this life. Any Rinpoche must practice both Esoteric and Exoteric Buddhism. For Tibetan Buddhism, a lay Rinpoche is called “Ngakpa”. In Tibet, a Rinpoche’s virtue power resulting from practicing equals to those for one hundred lamas’ total. The lamas mentioned here are not those ordinary lay people whom you see in Taiwan or Japan. Instead, they are the lay people who had conducted retreat practices for more than three years and three months. A Ngakpa’s virtue power resulting from practicing equals to those for one hundred Rinpoche’s total.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to enlighten: Today, “Dorje Phurpa” puja will be conducted for you. Dorje Phurpa is the mind emanation of Buddha Amitabha, Bodhisattva Manjushri, Vajrapani, Mahāsthāmaprāpta and Vajra Bhairava. Dorje Phurpa is the Wrathful Deity of Vajrasattva. Most of the Buddha’s statues in the front of the Center are Peaceful Deities and they manifest kind and peaceful look of Buddha’s and Bodhisattva’s. When yidams of the Vajra Family manifest angry look, it does not mean that they are not merciful and compassionate. For those stubborn and bad-quality sentient beings who can’t listen to the compassionate words and have strong heart of hatred and attachment, yidams of the Vajra Family will manifest angry look to liberate them. It is like when the parents discipline their children, at the beginning the parents will advise them nicely. If they do not listen over and over again, then the parents will have severe look and tone! Master Padmasambhava is one of the great practitioners in Tibetan Buddhism who has attained achievement. When taking retreat practice in the cave in Nepal, Master Padmasambhava had often practiced Dorje Phurpa ritual to subdue the evil spirits.

This is a difficult practice as the practitioner must have a yidam in the Vajra family of Tantric Buddhism. In addition, the practitioner has to attain the level of Ati Yoga and the meditative concentration of Spranbrala Yoga. A practitioner who has attained Spranbrla Yoga is not influenced by his surroundings and nothing will frighten him. To practice Vajrayana Buddhism, one definitely needs help from a yidam of the Vajra family and usually has to practice Dorje Phurba. Being a very powerful and fierce yidam, Dorje Phurba has great powers and acts extremely fast. If one solely practices Dorje Phurba in his life, he can obtain abundant wealth, health, and longevity as well as eliminate obstacles in his Buddhist study and karmic obstructions until he attains Buddhahood.

The puja of Dorje Phurba performed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a terma personally bestowed by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche during His Holiness’s stay in Taiwan with a Dharma text compiled by the 29th throne holder of Drikung Kagyu Order. A terma is a puja that is not imparted by a human being, but directly by the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dharma protectors, or Vajrayoginis. Therefore, the power of such a puja is particularly great. It is not easy to get such a puja, not to mention to achieve accomplishments with it. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche combined with Dorje Phurba while attaining accomplishments with the puja during a retreat, thunders much louder than ordinary ones roared right above the retreat room and the whole retreat room was tossed more fiercely than it would have been during an earthquake. If one feels a bit scared, he will be taken by Dorje Phurba on the spot and die. Why would people feel scared? It is because they have a lot of greedy thoughts and desires. People are afraid of losing or being harmed. Without any fear, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained non-differentiation and doesn’t make a distinction between good and bad, for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only has compassion and Bodhichitta.

A practitioner who has perfected the puja of Dorje Phurba will be bestowed with auspiciousness, virtues, wealth, health, longevity, inexhaustible influential powers, and perfect Buddhist activities. Nothing will be able to bring harm to him, and he will have a great many disciples, be revered by his family members, and propagate the Buddhist teachings extensively. One section of the puja of Dorje Phurba is contributed to bring longevity for the attendees. Nevertheless, the purpose of making you live a longer life is not to allow you to have more time to enjoy life, to make more money, or to spend more time finding more boyfriends. It gives you more time so that you may learn and study Buddhism. One’s Buddhist study has to be conducted under a guru who acts in accordance with the Buddhist teachings. If one says that he can achieve accomplishments through his practice conducted at home, such a thought is wrong. Throughout the history, not a single practitioner has been able to achieve accomplishments without a guru’s teaching and guidance.

Today’s puja is conducted through a clean and pure mind. The performer’s heart is clean and pure, and so are the ones of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Being pure and clean is a thought-free state. Therefore, it is hoped that you would attend today’s puja with a clean and pure heart and leave behind any self-thoughts or desires. Thereby, this puja will be helpful to you.

Thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to perform the puja for everyone and asked all the attendees to recite their own names as well as the names of people or animals that they would like Dorje Phurba to protect three times.

After a part of the puja was conducted, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained that the preliminary practice had just been completed. The preliminary practice is the aspiration and power of vows one has when performing a puja. Additionally, conducting the preliminary practice will purify the puja venue and pacify all the deities, devils, ghosts, and demons so that they wouldn’t interfere with the puja out of jealousy or hatred.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to perform the main practice of the puja of Dorje Phurba. It is a practice that places great emphasis on rituals. While reciting the mantras in the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche uttered an extremely low sound resembling that of roaring thunders. With vertical eyebrows, bulging eyes, extending mouth and immensely fierce facial expressions, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s look was exactly the same as the wrathful look of Dorje Phurba and served as an auspicious sign that indicated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s combination with the yidam. The aforementioned sounds and look couldn’t possibly be created by a person on purpose. The attendees all felt great shock at the fierce power of the arrival of Dorje Phurba. During the puja, nobody walked or made any sound at the venue. Even the babies who had cried constantly didn’t cry at all during the puja. How incredible the influential power was! From this, it could be seen that the blessing power of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was so great as to help the sentient beings to eliminate obstacles in their Buddhist study and innumerable sentient beings shall be benefited.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the enlightenment: One who has not received an empowerment of Dorje Phurba should not read its dharma text. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the assembly to recite the mantras. During the puja, every attendee was delivered with a offering object blessed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and was bestowed the rare and auspicious opportunity of eating together with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the puja.

After completely conducting the ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the assembly that the Dorje Phurba puja has been perfectly completed, and this practice was for helping all the attendees to: 1. eliminate the illness of mind, emotion, and brain 2. dispel the unknown disease and cancer caused by ghosts, demons, dragons, and deities 3. avoid possible accidents affected by the yearly, monthly, daily or hourly conflicts. Conflict here means that your personal magnetic field is conflicted with that of the year, month, date or hour and by which brings you an accidental death. Some people say it is to meet a bad luck. 4. be kept off the natural disaster such as flood, fire, and earthquakes resulted from the changes of the celestial bodies 5. be protected from being harmed by poisons or curses. 6. eliminate the accumulated karmic obstacles.

Since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has imparted Buddha-Dharma starting in 1997, no disciple died in an accident, for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche constantly holds pujas and conducts dharma rituals for everyone. All disciples have been protected and blessed by the great merits and ability of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately let all the attendees stepped forward to the Mandala and personally gave blessings to them one by one with a Dorje Phurba Vajra. All people were bestowed the rare and precious nectar and nectar pill.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued on giving enlightenment: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just waved the five-colored flags, different from that used by Japanese Shintoism, to give blessings to you. The five-colored flags’ form, colors, and accessories are deeply with particular meanings. The five colors represent all the best materials, elements, and capacities in the Universe. Human’s flesh body is composed of blood, flesh, and water (including endocrine). Once a person makes evildoings, killing or deceiving, his body gets damaged and the endocrine gets disturbed. Then he would get sick. The conducting practitioner would give his own virtues and merits to the attendees so as to replenish their damaged elements. Besides, the form of five-colored flags is like an arrow. In ancient times people think an arrow is very speedy. Therefore the form indicates this dharma can help sentient beings in a very fast speed. Moreover, the sharp point of an arrow is of great ability of piercing, by which the form of the five-colored flags illustrates Dorje Phurba, like an arrow, could pierce through your thick and rigid body full of greed and desire, eliminating your evil karmic obstacles.

Many people know that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can help people and has also saved many cancer patients. There are more and more people who get cancer now. A person gets cancer because of eating seafood, eating meat, having serious killing karma, and having strong greed.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used to love eating seafood very much and was very picky about the freshness of the seafood; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not eat a fish which was already dead and would only eat a fish which was just killed before preparing the dish. This preference also applied to shrimps, crabs, and even abalones. Because of loving to eat seafood, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had gotten serious skin cancer at the age of 45. At the time, a disciple, who is a doctor, advised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to seek medical treatment; but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that this was caused by the law of cause and effect; so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not go to see any doctor, did not do electrotherapy or chemotherapy, and just relied on practicing Buddha dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is 62 years old this year and the skin cancer has been cured completely without taking any medicine. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once saw a TV program in the Discovery channel which reported that the chemotherapy and electrotherapy of the modern medicine, in addition to killing cancer cells in the body, also kill the good cells in the body.

It has stated in Buddhist scriptures that dragons live in the trees, in the water, under the earth, and in the stones. So those who like to eat seafood would hurt the dragons. A person would get sick even when being glared at by a dragon’s eyes, let alone the consequences one would get when hurting the dragons. That is why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche urges people not to arbitrarily cut down big trees, not to harm water animals or contaminate water sources, not to dig deeply into the earth, and not to move large stones. Japanese attendees may feel that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is speaking about myths; however, in fact, Buddha always taught us not to lie and what Buddha has said is all true; Buddha would never lie to us and we should believe his words. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has personally witnessed these things, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that this is true and will never lie to you.

You often heard bad things, but thought these things were good to you; or you heard good things, but thought these things were bad to you. Those who cannot listen to Buddha dharma are in such condition because they have serious killing karma in this and past generations of lives. If you bear grudges because you felt others had disappointed you, you body will therefore be damaged; if you get angry because you felt others had harmed you, your health will become poor; once your health becomes poor, you have to spend money on seeing a doctor; so it is not worth to be angry! Those who have gotten cancers should believe in the law of cause and effect, make all efforts possible to do virtuous deeds, and not worry about why this decease happened; those people should think what things they have done wrong in the past. Instead of spending money on medical treatment, it is better for them to donate money to people who really have no money to see a doctor; doing such might be helpful for healing their illnesses.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once dined in a high-class restaurant in France. When the chef of the restaurant knew that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was a vegetarian, the chef was very happy since the highest level of cuisine in France is vegetarian dishes. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had also taken the Japanese interpreter of today’s puja to a famous French restaurant in Tokyo to eat vegetarian dishes. During the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the interpreter on the spot how the vegetarian dishes were. She immediately answered that the dishes were very delicious. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to ask her whether she had started to have a vegetarian diet. She answered that she was a vegetarian 85 percent of the time. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened her that she was helping to do oral interpretation in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s puja, if she still refused to become a vegetarian, she should not come and do this again in the future.

Having a vegetarian diet is helpful to one’s health and can reduce one’s desires. It is because of your greed and desire that you feel sufferings in life.

The water and nectar pills you took, which had been consecrated by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, are in fact to replenish your bone, flesh, internal secretion, and the energies consumed through daily activities, because the human body consists of blood, flesh and liquids. Although what you felt is taking juice and sweet food. In the last month of this year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the awe-inspiring and fierce Dharma for everyone, as long as you accept the Rinpoche’s advices you would be benefited from the ritual that consumed a lot of energies of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The Rinpoche hope you could lessen the hatred against other people, could avoid bearing grudges. Don’t always consider other people are against you or they do not treat you fairly, as it would harm your physical body and would harm your internal secretion. If you continue on deceit, making bad things, eating and kill living beings, some serious problems would happen to you in the next year.

The next year, a fire year, will still be unprosperous in the extreme. The situation will be unusual, either very good or very bad. There would be more fire, earth quake, and volcanic outbreaks. It would be tense in interpersonal relations, because people would be more irritable. The weather condition will be dry and result in a shortage of water. Nowadays, water resources are becoming rare, so everybody ought to cherish water resources. Japanese like alcohol, which requires pretty much water to produce. Therefore, it would be better to not take alcohol. However, you have not yet converted to Buddhism, not yet a disciple, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could not stop your doing it and could only advise you. In next year, floods would follow from much fire; it would be no somewhat devastating war. Hope everybody stop cheating any others. No more wrong doings; practice charity more. Take vegetarian diet; no more alcohol. Thus, one should be safe and survive in the year of difficulties.

Wish you next year apart from improper courtship, apart from inappropriate things. If you do not take any meat, you will be benefited from this puja by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Wish you all an auspicious and peaceful year.

December 27, 2009

The auspicious regular puja was held at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei. Believers and disciples listened reverently to the audio recording of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings on October 13, 2002 regarding the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas, include practices from the third to the twelfth.

During the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: One female disciple had just passed away several days ago and she had obtained Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious Phowa ritual to transfer her consciousness. Before she went to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she found out that her pancreatic cancer had already shifted to the liver. Her condition was very critical. Doctor had performed operation for her to remove the tumors and connected her stomach with intestine. However, ever since she had received help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, during that time she had just suffered from some minor pain and had bad appetite to eat at most. Comparing with the suffering of other pancreatic cancer patients, her sufferings were much less.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: The reason why she was mentioned today was to let us know that great changes can happen to this person including his family members if this person can listen and follow Buddha Dharma. Every time when this disciple saw Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she would always say that she had suffered a lot. She was very pitiful and did not want to die. The first time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw her, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already known that she will not live long because her pancreas and liver did not function. Everyone in her family, especially her mother, was very sad because of her attachment and refusal to die. Her mother had ever kneeled down to beg Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for her. One time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told this disciple: It is considered the least filial piety thing for your mother to kneel down for you. You must be responsible for your own causes and effects since you had done them. Your pain will reduce a lot if you can accept this karmic result. True filial piety means you don’t give your afflictions and sufferings to your parents. After listening to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment, she had never told her mother about the conditions of her body. She had accepted completely. Later she also reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she had already accepted the karmic results! In fact, she did not want to have the operation in July. It was her husband that wanted her to have it because he did not want her to die so soon. Yet in the end it was the operation that had made her die earlier.

The most important thing between the doctor and the patient is a caring heart. Most people think that they should leave the doctor for taking care of the illness. Yet they will blame the doctor if things are not handled properly. In fact, whether the illness can be cured or not is related to the patient’s own causes and conditions.

During the last two months of her life, this disciple also advised her family not to attach and they should let go. Around 11am on the day when she died, her blood pressure had already dropped to 30 to 40. From medical point of view, it was the sign of dying. During noontime, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to see her. When her younger sister told her that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will be coming to see her, her blood pressure had returned to 140. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was trying to give her blessings, her eyes were already opened and could not be moved. She had entered into the state of coma from medical point of view. While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was giving her the blessings, she blinked her eyelids three times and did not move her eyes. It meant that she knew Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was helping her.

It was often written in the Sutra to advise the family members of the heavily-ill or dying person that they should not discuss the conditions next to the patient or the dying person. Neither should they talk about things like how to divide up the property. Many people thought that one will be out of consciousness while in coma. As a matter of fact, the consciousness will still exist. It was very clear in this case so that this case was mentioned. In fact, every time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche blessed the patient, the patient’s consciousness indeed existed as long as he still had the chi for sustaining his life. Therefore performing euthanasia or making vegetable to die earlier are both considered as murder. Although when you saw this a person became a vegetable, yet actually he still had the consciousness. The family members of this disciple had accepted Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advise for not letting her receive emergency aid. Therefore her sufferings had reduced significantly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her younger sister that she would die around 5:00pm. Later she died around 4:30pm. After her death, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted Phowa ritual for her immediately. After successful completion of the ritual, the crown of her head was warm.

The family member of the dead who has received Phowa ritual must make great offerings. In Tibet, when someone is about to die, this person’s family members must go to the monastery to make great offerings and invite the Rinpoche who is capable of conducting Phowa ritual home. After successful completion of the ritual, more offerings are still needed. It was written in all Sutra that it will require merits and virtues as well as causes and conditions to be liberated to the western paradise. Merits are resulted from making offerings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not have any attachment to the offerings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will help any one if there is there is cause and condition.

This disciple had achieved several conditions required by the Pure Land School: Firstly, she had achieved being filial piety. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her, she truly had not said anything about not feeling comfortable in front of her mother. Secondly, she had obeyed and served the guru. She had listened and accepted what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advise. Thirdly, she had also achieved the requirements of seeking refugee under the Three Jewels. Several months before her death, it was very possible that she hadn’t violated the precepts because she was very ill all day and did not have the chance to do so. Also she could not talk much because her condition was not well. As your body condition is very good, therefore you talk a lot every day, sometime talking about this and sometimes thinking about that. Sometimes you feel pitiful when you see someone is sick. It is not necessary true! Sometimes it is a good thing to having serious illness instead so that you will not have the opportunity to conduct bad deeds. Therefore, she had achieved no killing with mercy and compassion. She had also practiced the Ten Good Deeds. It was because she had attended every pujas and had reverent manners. Though she was so painful so that she had to bend her waist during the puja, she just sat there and did not move at all.

This disciple had got the cause and condition for one to attain rebirth in a pure land, so she was bestowed with the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on the day of her death. Few people were able to be given the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche right before their death. It is not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche decides not to go, but because there is no cause and condition. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the practice of Phowa on Yixian Road while her body was in the hospital. Nevertheless, it was successfully conducted all the same and her crown chakra felt warm at completion of the practice.

The story tells us that the learning of Buddhism is simple. The difficulty lies in the fact that you have created too many thoughts, comparisons, and differentiation. You only accept the Buddhist teachings when you consider them beneficial to you and wouldn’t take in those without any benefits to you. In fact, Buddhist study is very simple indeed and not difficult at all. Originally, this person would not have attained rebirth in the pure land with her karmic retributions. All Buddhist sutras state that one who receives the Phowa needs to have considerable merits. The sublimity of the Phowa lies in that the deceased person will go to Amitabha’s pure land immediately after the practice is completed and the 8-hour assisted recitation will not be needed. The deceased person doesn’t have to experience the fear and torture in the process of death and can go to the pure land in a matter of tens of minutes.

This disciple didn’t come from a wealthy family, nor did she make any great offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nevertheless, she had made a great offering by having absolute faith in her guru. She merely told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche about her discomfort after having undergone a surgery, and never mentioned it thereafter. Regardless the amount of prostrations made to the Buddhas, the vows being taken, the Buddhist sutras recited by a Buddhist learner, it will still be impossible for him to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death if he hasn’t adjusted his attitude properly. In fact, it is not difficult but very easy to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Our sufferings lie in the fact that we are reluctant to let go and not able to see through while considering ourselves practicing well. If our bodies are not ill, our hearts will still be ill with such a thought.

This story tells you that the first thing for one’s Buddhist study is to have a fearless thought. Secondly, one’s consciousness is clear about what happens around him before death. Remember, when you see someone on the point of his death, do not talk about him or his medical condition around the person, for it will make him suffer. We sometimes see vegetative patients. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean that he has no hearing. He is still very conscious. Even though one is brain dead, he still has hearing ability. Many people think that a brain dead person has only got heart beat and breathing and doesn’t respond, just as a vegetable. However, such a person actually responds and has hearing ability as well.

In addition, a child aged a little more than a month passed away this afternoon. The child’s mother underwent an examination when she was 4 months pregnant and found that the child had a cleft-lip and was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus due to its abnormal brain development. The doctor suggested that they have an abortion, for it would be impossible for the baby to live on. The child’s parents came to seek help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. From a Buddhist perspective, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said to them, “Even if you have an abortion, it doesn’t mean that the karma between you and the child will be over. She may come again as a healthy child, but she might take greater revenge on you.” Nowadays, many people think that they can have an abortion when the baby doesn’t develop well in the womb so that they can have another one. Such a thought is horrifying. When a child comes to your family, he or she comes with 4 matters: To repay grace, to take revenge, to collect debts, or to pay off debts. No matter how good or bad the child is, it is merely a cause and condition from a Buddhist perspective. If you think that the child has to be a good one, you shall ask yourself how many good deeds you and your ancestors have conducted. With good deeds, the child will naturally be a good one.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ancestors used to farm silkworms and plant white mulberries. They had made a lot of money by selling silk. Nonetheless, from the generation of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great grandfather to date, every male descendant passed away before 50. Every male descendant has had high blood pressure, heart diseases and brain problems. Originally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had such problems, too. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche learned Buddhism and thereby completely changed his fate. Therefore, your child wouldn’t be good or healthy simply because you want him or her to be so. It is closely related to the cause and condition of you couple and your families. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advised the couple not to kill a life for an abortion equals to a homicide. The karmic retribution of a homicide is very heavy. Even though you have another pregnancy and give birth to a pretty and healthy child, the child may die in an accident. You would feel more sorrows under such a circumstance. Such incidents are not rare. The child might grow up and enter a college, but a car accident or a brain tumor would take away his life. The parents would suffer more for they would be really reluctant to let go. Many people want to shape their children so as to make them think just as the parents do. If so, there will be serious problems because you will pass on your shortcomings, i.e. attachment and inability to see through, to your child by doing so.

The couple listened to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice and gave birth to the baby. It was a smooth delivery and the child didn’t make the mother suffer. When the baby was born, she really had a cleft-lip and Hydrocephalus. The child passed away this morning and received the Phowa conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Even though she was merely a bit over 1 month old, the Phowa was successfully conducted all the same. Upon completion of the practice, her crown chakra was warm. When performing the Phowa, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche finally saw why this child had been brought. The child had been a cow in her father’s family. They killed it and cracked its skull, so it came to take revenge in this life. If they didn’t deal with this child with the Buddhist teachings, the child would come again to take revenge, just as a story stated in the Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows.

These two short stories tell you to accept and have deep faith in the law of cause and effect when learning Buddhism. Those who do not have deep faith in the law of cause and effect don’t have clean and pure hearts. Not being clean and pure refers to a heart filled with greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, doubt, comparison, and differentiation. One with such a heart will never ever believe the law of cause and effect and, thereby, will continue to violate the precepts while still considering himself doing something correct and reasoning his own deeds. One who believes in the law of cause and effect creates every word and action for others and leaves himself behind.

One day, a disciple who works as a Chinese medicine doctor rushed to the Buddhist center, regarding herself as the most important one because she was taking the medicine to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nonetheless, in this Buddhist center, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche considers the elderly and the young are the most important. Thinking herself as a Chinese medicine doctor, she has been very proud and gets irritated all the time for she always sees faults in others. You are the same, too. With such a personality, how can one learn compassion? It is impossible to learn, then. Even though one may reveal a positive attitude once in a while, he does it on purpose without the compassion realized in Emptiness.

The so-called compassion realized in Emptiness refers to an attitude which is free from the thinking process with one’s life experience and naturally reveals a heart for the benefit of the sentient beings. A worldly person thinks before conducting any deed, and his thinking pattern depends on particular experiences in his life. Ordinary people obtain their life experiences through making comparisons, i.e. differentiation. There is nothing wrong with one’s life experiences, but they are not related to the Buddhist nature. Nevertheless, modern people constantly apply their own experiences to their Buddhist study. For instance, the Buddhist sutra states that one should hear, contemplate, and meditate while learning Buddhism. It means that one should think upon hearing the Buddhist teachings. Nonetheless, ordinary people think by applying their knowledge to the Buddhist teachings they have heard and seen. Such a way of thinking is wrong. The correct way of thinking is to contemplate and see if your have truly made use of the heard Buddhist teachings in your daily life. No matter you are an ordained person or a lay one, you will fail to use or acquire any Buddhist teaching if your life style is different from the one taught by the Buddha.

It is actually very easy to lead a life with the Buddhist teachings. Nevertheless, ordinary people mistake that one has to give away and abandon everything when living a life of the Buddhist teachings. In fact, the reality is different from their imagination. Even if there is something to abandon, one will not get when he doesn’t give and will get when he gives.

Never transgress precepts for one’s own profit. Once one curses other people even by one sentence, or an evil thought arises in heart, he will have the karmic effect sooner or later. Bad luck is not cause by other people but by oneself past doing. Leaving the past lives behind, just taking about in this life how much meat have you eaten and how many people have you scolded? Even you have not spoken to curse other people, but you have cursed other people in heart. These two kinds of evildoing would just let you suffer a lot.  It is clearly stated in the Sutra of The Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva that “The ordinary are doing nothing but committing sins when a thought arises or when an idea is generated.” Those who say: “Don’t tell our guru this; otherwise, guru would scold us!” are with evil thought. It has been mentioned in the former practices that even if someone broadcasts throughout the billion worlds all sorts of offensive remarks about one, or slander one, one should still pay respect to him as a virtuous friend, let alone when one is scolded by your guru!

If a Buddhist learner dose not clear off his greed, hatred, delusion, arrogance, and doubt in the heart, but calculates how much money he should take or earn, he will be always entangled in the greed , hatred, delusion, arrogance, and doubt. Those who have much , hatred, delusion, arrogance, and doubt are tend to acquire high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, or, for more serious case, cancer. It is because that one who takes things that he should not have taken, he has to repay for it.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was a sales manager of a jewelry company in Hong Kong, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made use of the category of the store and contacted with customers in private so as to make much extra gains every month. At that time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thought he was supposed to do that because the company treated much less than he should decently do. Only after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to learn Buddhist teachings did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realize how scary the law of cause and effect is. That doing was exactly committing “stealing.” As long as one stays at a company and gets his salary from his boss, one is supposed to treat the company fairly and be worthy of the salary. One should not make use of company’s assets to earn personal profit; otherwise, one will be broken and failed. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s story was the best example: when at the age of twenty-nine, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took a batch of jewels valued more than two millions in HKD to Australia. As a result, the jewels were all confiscated by Customs. It just verified the saying: ”The way it comes, the way it goes.”

No matter what position you take today, as long as you take undeserved money such as rack-off, you can not keep it for long. Even if you retain the money, you may pay for it with your health. Even if your heath is still in good conditions, some problems may happen to your family. Why you always take money so seriously? For the predestined wealth in your life, as long as you work appropriately for your company, you will earn it. If you have no sincerity, do not do business with others.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever helped one person whose mother was sick but he had no money even for arrangement of the funeral when his mother passed away. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche supported him the all expenses, including his marriage and jobs. However, he returned evil for good. For that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never harbor bitter resentment but has been thankful to him till now, since the one’s doing had reminded Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had his own defects. Therefore, you have to understand the cause and effect are all done by yourselves. But you always be afraid and unwilling to accept when the karmic effect is ripened.

The spirit of learning Buddhism starts from not doing harm to the surrounding people; otherwise, once the thought of greed arises, you will do harm to others for making more money you think you should earn.

(23) When encountering pleasing sense objects, though they appear beautiful like a rainbow in summertime, not to regard them as real and to abandon clinging attachment is the Bodhisattvas’ practice.

We all like the pleasing sense objects and environment. However, when encountering pleasing sense objects, we ought to consider in mind they are only visible, but in fact untouchable and unreal, like a rainbow in summertime. Therefore, we should abandon the greed for “enjoying the pleasing sense objects.” The objects here mean both that of life and of Buddhist practice. If one, thinking himself has already attained some position, feels joy and has clinging attachments to it, one will never get improved.

The Buddha has ever said that he never imparted Buddha-Dharma. “Abandon dharma”, stated in the Vajra Sutra, means to abandon even the orthodox dharma, let alone the non-Buddhist dharma. All Buddha-Dharma is just a tool, a process to tranform us from an ordinary person to a Bodhisattva, and finally attain Buddhahood.

For example, supposing you have been very lucky and earned much money recently, you are flattered and highly praised by many people, so you much enjoy this kind of state. However, if you are attached to it, you will start to suffer when losing it. We have to understand that this kind of happening is like a rainbow in summertime. We can see a rainbow in the sky, but we can not touch it. Also, the rainbow will soon disappear. It is all the same case with the pleasing sense objects. Broadly speaking, if we are clinging to some kind of pleasing state such as eating, listening to music, being praised, all of these greedy love and attachment will become the motive power of our reincarnation.

When there is a relative passing away at home, ordinary people will always be very painful. There are two reasons for this; the first is that the deceased has not been properly liberated and the deceased is still in the suffering ocean of the three evil realms, so his or her relatives will feel painful. The second reason is that the painful relatives do not accept Buddha dharma and the natural law. The natural law is that there are birth and destruction for any matter, object, and person. The law of birth and destruction is fundamentally the natural law and we must accept it. Even if you do not accept it, this does not mean that this fact does not exist. If you do not want to accept the law of birth and destruction, only after attaining Buddhahood, then you can completely get rid of the law of birth and destruction.

If one starts to have worries because there is no joyful state, then delusions will appear in one’s mind continuously. This principle can be applied to both mundane matters and supra-mundane dharmas. The mundane matters are all unreal, that is, anything happened to us or any family matter is all false and not eternal. If we think that the worldly matters are eternal, then people would not get old, would not die, nor would be born. Any joyful state considered by human beings is all based on the principle of causes and conditions. The principle of causes and conditions is the law of arising and ceasing; that is, when you have the feeling of “birth”, at the same time, it is the beginning time for “destruction”. If one does not pursue the happy states and can have a comfortable, and non-persistent mindset, whether in life or in self-cultivation, that would be a very comfortable state. Otherwise, when the pleasant feelings disappear, one would start to have worries and the pains of chasing after happiness.

Parents want their children to have good grades in school, their daughters to marry good husbands, and their sons to marry good wives; couples want the other party to be considerate; these are all to pursue such pleasant states. When one’s desires are not satisfied, one’s ignorance will rise up; when one’s ignorance is arising, one will start to do some things which harm others and are also detrimental to oneself.

Similarly, during our practices of Buddha dharma, we will certainly encounter some very wonderful states. When these wonderful states occur, if one thinks that one has already attained achievements, has practiced well, is different than other people, has kept the precepts very well, and is very solemn, and so on, these thoughts are all conditioned dharmas. These are thoughts of ordinary people which are pretentious and will cause the attitude of arrogance and pride. When one’s arrogant mind arises, one will go closer and closer towards the devil’s path.

What is the difference between Devil and Buddha? Buddha’s mind is a mind of equality; a devil’s mind is a mind of arrogance. Devil thinks that he is better than other people and more capable than others. Those who practice Bodhisattvas’ path cannot reject any thing, object, or person in the universe; every scene can help us to generate a vigilant mind and benefit us.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used to like very much of driving a “Jaguar” car. Before the car was bought, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to see the car catalog every day; after the car was bought, once Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sat inside the car, the joyful feelings immediately disappear. This was just a pursuit of feelings. Now we, ordinary people, all play this kind of tricks and pursue the desires every day, hoping to gain something, but, contrary to our expectations, starting to lose after gaining. Such kind of greed let us pursue continuously.

(24) All kinds of sufferings are like losing one’s beloved son in one’s dream. It is very toilsome to hold on to one’s delusions as the real things. So when encountering difficulties and obstacles, it is Bodhisattvas’ practice to treat all of them as delusions.

This principle explains to us what we should think when facing sufferings. Sufferings are like that we dream of our favorite son being dead; although it is only an illusion and not real, we always think we are very painful and persist in holding onto this feeling. If we persist in having this kind of feeling constantly, we will be in pains twenty-four hours a day every day. Once a person who practices Buddha dharma truly understands the true body and appearance, he will also realize that sufferings are based on the law of causes and conditions as well. When the pain begins, it ceases at the same time; so the pain is also the beginning of goodness. Therefore, both the law of cause and effect and the law of cause and condition interact with each other and their interaction is complex. For example, some people have planted bad causes and their karmic retributions would be bad; but if they could repent within a thought and do virtuous deeds at the time when the karmic retributions mature, the virtuous cause will immediately occur within their karmic retributions.

All sufferings received by us are just only a kind of feelings showing up from the causes we had done in the past in our spirits and souls. This kind of feeling will not harm the Buddha nature in our essence. If one wishes to practice Buddha dharma to avoid all sufferings in the world, this kind of thinking is wrong. The sufferings in Buddha’s teaching of “escaping from sufferings and attaining joyfulness” means the sufferings of reincarnations; the joyfulness in the teaching means the eternal happiness of not having to reincarnate. If we pursue the mundane happiness, it is just the source of sufferings.

If we want to live a good life, we would do everything to make money, make all effort to boast our superiority, and desperately belittle others. This is the same for both lay practitioners and monks and nuns. When we get refuted by others, we will become unhappy. Once we start to be unhappy, the sufferings begin. The mundane happiness sought by most people in this world is not different from those sought by animals: sleeping, getting up, finding something to eat, finding a partner, having and raising children, the same for human beings. The only difference is that human beings can write text and speak so as to form and pass cultures. Actually, animals have cultures as well. If some animals live in an area for a long time, their feeding ground will be passed down from generation to generation; this is the animal culture of eating.

Ordinary people think that the sufferings are: fear of their children having no filial piety, fear of their husbands having affairs, fear of not knowing how to teach their kids, fear of business failure, fear of being cheated, fear of no money, fear of no house, and fear of looking down on by people, and so on. However, when we think carefully, this kind of fear comes from greedy minds. This kind of greedy mind let us feel that all of our behaviors are correct; it is this kind of thinking that make us suffer even more when our karmic retributions of pains mature.

If one does completely, hundred percent, accept this principle of causality, when the fruits become matured, one would perceive the phenomena as a dream, in which a son died, and would aware of it as an illusion when wake up. If one keeps thinking “is it real my son passed over”, it might become true because of your thoughts. One should forget the dream after wakeup, that is, regard it as non-existing. Some people regard themselves being miraculous because they consider their dreams are efficacious as if the dreams will become true. In fact, it is because you have continually thought about the dream, so it happens. If you continually induce yourself to that thing, that would happen indeed. It is not relevant to if efficacious or powerful, but is due to the mind.

By this principle, it tells us a true practitioner would not attach to the phenomena such as the aforementioned joy and the sufferings just elaborated; though, ordinary people refuse sufferings but want the joy. Buddha enlightened us that sufferings originate from joy. People who practice on the Bodhisattvas Path would abandon both of joy and sufferings. Joy can be troubles and hindrance to attainment. Why we should be afraid of fame and gain? There are practitioners who accomplished a lot at first. When their disciples increase and they become a little famous, they become more interested in gaining fames and wealth. Some of them can reject wealth, but could not resist gaining fame. However, sufferings follow when gaining fame. Fame and wealth are manifested results due to the merits accumulated in past lives. That is, the merits had turned into the results and had become void. Therefore, one could find that those famous monks, if they have interests in fame, have health problems or have problems in the monastery. It is because their merits are not enough for the development of their Buddhist center.

Specifically, some practitioners regard themselves as accomplished model, accept other people’s praise, and agree with others talking on their good complexion. They become proud of their accomplishments and harangue to others. One should avoid such mind set. It would be worse if one regards oneself as in the state of accomplishment, because the pride arouse.

Some practitioners would encounter lots of adversities indeed. If one is decisive in Bodhimind aspiring to benefits of the beings, one’s accumulated karma would be manifested very soon. The reasons are twofold. The first is to cut off all the accumulated karma in this life and to attain Buddha-hood and enlightenment, while the second is you are tested by your karmic creditors to find out if you are for the benefits of the beings wholeheartedly or for your own interests? As long as one could stand and face with the hardships, those karmic creditors would accompany you but would not bother you anymore.

While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started aspiring to Bodhimind, the Rinpoche was so poor that no money for a meal. If you were in such condition, you would say “I had no problems before learning Buddhism, now I am in big troubles”. Many people do have such notion. It is said in Buddha sutras, Bodhisattvas would help those who practice according to the Dharma, so they would have house, meals and longevity. The hardships are due to one’s own karma and are not related to any Bodhisattva. But, why do the problems appear? Because one has not generated Bodhimind, recites mantras for one’s own, and is afraid of death and sufferings.

In learning Buddhism, sorrows and sufferings would be usual. For example, you are hindered by your family to prevent you from learning Buddhism. Perhaps, many Buddhist centers guide you if you dedicate the merits and virtues to your husband, he will allow you to learn Buddhism. It is, however, of a witch. In Buddha sutras, it only teaches us to correct ourselves. So long as your mind becomes virtuous, people around you would sense the changes. And they would allow you to learn Buddhism, and might come with you. Therefore, if your family hinders you, it means you have not corrected and changed. Don’t follow with those other Buddhist centers to dedicate mantra reciting to your husband, your mother-in-law and so forth. It is inappropriate dedication. Dedication is to accumulate merits and virtues so one could be given rebirth in the pure land and could attain Buddha-hood. Dedication is to pray that the beings could have the opportunities, as I have, to attain Buddha-hood. It is not to distinguish hardships you are faced.

A true practitioner would not adhere to joy and suffering, nor does the practitioner want joy and refuse sufferings. The practitioner abandons both of them. Although, you might be mundane and might not regard yourself as a Buddhist, you ought to not attach to them. As long as you attach to joy and sufferings, you will commit to wrong doings repeatedly.

(25) If it is necessary to give away even one’s body while aspiring to enlightenment, what need is there to mention external objects? Therefore, practicing generosity without hope of reciprocation or karmic results is the bodhisattvas’ practice.

The meaning of this practice is that when we initiate a Bodhichitta heart to take Bodhisattva’s path, even our own body can be offered. What need is there to mention external objects? Therefore, while we are benefiting sentient beings, we must not hope of any return in our heart.

People generally wish that what they give away must get something back in return. For example, it is very popular in many temples now that when one donates a certain amount of money, then this person can be a major donor or key donor so that this person can sit at the front row. Such phenomenon matches ordinary people’s attitude. Ordinary people always wish others know what they have done so that others can highly praise them. This is the wrong way if one wishes to liberate sentient beings from life and death.

Base on this practice, when practicing Bodhisattvas’ path and initiating Bodhichitta vows as a practitioner, even our own body can be offered. What need is there to mention external objects? Therefore, we do not hope and don’t want to receive anything in return. Yet it is strange that the more you do not hope for, the more you will get.

Many of you have a common mistake, that is you only ask for Buddhas’ and Bodhisattvas’ help when you have problems. After you are saved, then what you think is to live your life first. Yet have you ever thought that how did you get your life back? It is bestowed by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! After telling you over and over again, you still don’t believe in Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

It was written very clearly in Sutra that Buddha will not let you suffer from hunger if only you are willing to initiate the heart to benefit sentient beings. All your problems can be resolved sooner or later. You forget Buddhas and Bodhisattvas because you are busy living your live. Do you consider this having the heart to repay their kindness? Practicing Buddha Dharma, helping oneself to be liberated from life and death and benefiting sentient beings are the true means to repay their kindness. If you are not willing to do so, then coming here can only let you accumulate some tiny merits. You still can not change the karma that you had done in the past lives. Merits can help us create causes and conditions for listening to Buddha Dharma. Only virtues can change the karma. Merits are resulted from precept, meditation and wisdom. Now you don’t follow the precepts and think that living your life is the most important thing. It will be too late when the karmic obstacles appear. It was never heard that practicing Buddhism would die of hunger.

The Buddha Dharma currently bestowed at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center is Vajrayana. That is, this teaching can allow you to attain accomplishment with the quickest time. One with supreme temperament can attain Buddhahood with this body. One with moderate temperament can attain Buddhahood during the state of bardo. One with low temperament can attain Buddhahood in less than seventeen lives. This is the reason how auspicious Vajrayana is. Yet all Vajrayana practitioners must vow to initiate a Bodhichitta heart and take Bodhichitta path. Without doing so it is not possible to attain accomplishment. Why is Vajrayana so strict? It is because right now you are still a believer. You haven’t achieved what it requires to be a disciple of Buddha. Since Vajrayana teachings are bestowed at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, you can not attain any accomplishment no matter how hard you have practiced if you thoughts are different from those of Vajrayana’s and your vows are different from those of Yidam’s. Therefore no matter if you practice Buddha Amitabha, Avalokiteshvara or any Bodhisattva, you can only be liberated from life and death if your thoughts and behaviors must be the same as those of Bodhisattva’ or Buddha’.

How did Bodhisattva attain accomplishment? Bodhisattvas do not have ego and they give everything to sentient beings. It is like when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche help practice Phowa ritual for sentient beings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would get up, have a quick brush up and start to conduct the ritual upon receiving the phone call. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not have his own time. Yet you all think that your life is so important. This means you do not have a Bodhichitta heart. How can you attain accomplishment from practicing Vajrayana Buddha Dharma without a Bodhichitta heart? No dharma protector or guru of the Lineage will take care of you if you do not attain any accomplishment! It is because you disobey their vows. Therefore, you must pay attention to this and ask yourself if you have done what Buddhas and Bodhisattvas had thought. No matter if you practice Vajrayana, Mahayana or Hinayana Buddha Dharma, you must stop all afflictions. These are all considered as afflictions if you are afraid to die of hunger, afraid of starving or afraid of your creditor looking for you. Leave everything to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas since you have already believed in them! Even dying of hunger is your karmic result. There is nothing to be afraid of.

Having a Bodhichitta heart is as important as having a heart that is willing to offer. We can give away happiness and suffering at the same time if only we can offer. We must accomplish void of the Three Wheels which means we should not have the thought of making offering, we should not think of whom to make offering to and we should not think of the objects to make offering with. Let causes and conditions decide everything and try to do as much as possible within your capability. Do not think, argue or compare. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used to practice offering by giving away a family fortune. Buddha did not ask you to follow this. Buddha simply taught you to follow causes and conditions, not to have attachment, to let go your attachment and not to be afraid of losing everything after making offering.

The so-called turning of the karma doesn’t refer to the elimination of the karma, but the turning of the influential force of the evil karma. Thereby, it is gradually turned into a helping force to you. How can you do that? You must practice charities and generosity as well as making offerings. It doesn’t have to be material wealth when one practices charities and generosity and making offerings. Just as the aforementioned disciple who died of cancer, she didn’t have much to offer and yet offered her heart that feared no death without pleading for longevity. You always have a misunderstanding and say that one cannot learn Buddhism without having any money. Does one need money to learn Buddhism in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center? Even though you make an offering with an empty red envelop, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still accepts it. With such an attitude, you will regard the Buddhist teachings as trade. If the Buddhist teachings were to be traded, all the wealth in the world would not be able to buy the Buddhist teachings!

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never thought about the future when practicing charities, generosity, and making offerings. As stated in the Buddhist sutras, a Buddhist learner should be a bit stupid, for people with less intelligence learn Buddhism faster. It is because they have lighter obstacle of what is known. In terms of the Buddhist study, there are two most serious kinds of obstacles. One is the obstacle of afflictions, and the other the obstacle of what is known. You have both kinds and thereby have great difficulty learning Buddhism. Therefore, the Buddha said that smart people wouldn’t acquire the Buddhist teachings, same for those who have greater scholarship, because they have a too heavy obstacle of what is known, which will obstruct them. Why are the sentient beings unable to learn Buddhism? It is because they have so many afflictions that they cannot acquire the teachings as well. So, you are constantly reminded not to examine the Buddhist teachings with your life experiences. Life experiences are an obstacle of what is known. Life experiences do not have to be those in this life, and can also be brought from one’s past lives. Obstacles might come from your clan, your family, your society and your country all the time.

One has to hear, contemplate, and meditate in his Buddhist study. One should examine his life in regard to the amount of Buddhist teachings being applied in his life. If one carries them out, he will then be qualified for being called as a Buddhist. If one doesn’t carry them out, he will not be a Buddhist regardless of his look. Examine yourself and do not excuse yourself by saying you don’t have the time. When will the impermanence come? There is no designated time, either. All is created by you yourself. Practitioners such as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are able to lengthen their lives when they have conducted advanced practices. They can even pass away sooner if they want to because they know that time is something that has been thought out. One decides whether he has time or not. The great accomplished masters, Drubwang Rinpoche and Tenzin Nyima, lengthened their lives for several years. At Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s second meeting with Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche in 1995, Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche said, “I shall never see you again.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately implored him to stay. Thereafter, all the lamas recited prayers daily so as to pray for his stay. In fact, the longer he stayed, the longer he suffered. It didn’t mean he would live longer. Same as Drubwang Rinpoche, who had prepared to pass away three years ago. Therefore, great practitioners who are not afraid of death actually are unable to die. As to you who are afraid of death, you will even die sooner. Because you don’t have the time to recite the Buddha’s name, to conduct repentance, and to make offerings, so impermanence doesn’t have the time for you, either, and will come all of a sudden. It is utterly terrible. The fact that you have the time or not depends on your own arrangement.

An old lady, who was in a coma, still told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she had hidden some gold somewhere and asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to let her daughter know about it. She wanted to distribute the gold to everybody and asked them not to have quarrels. Another old person told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on the verge of his death that he still had over 2 million NTD in his bank account and wanted to let his son know about the money. Still another person’s husband went to court with his cousin in his clan over estate issues. The person, who was in a coma, asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to tell her husband not to have conflicts with others any longer and to let the matter go. Therefore, people who are reluctant to practice charities, generosity and make offerings suffer a lot before death.

Some disciples have been busy meeting their ends. Although they have practiced Buddhism, they can still become a bee or an ant in their next life, such as those in a monastery. Because you have heard about the Buddhist teachings, you are enabled to listen to the Buddhist teachings in the Realm of Animals. Ants and bees are busy dealing with issues in their lives, too, so you have set a foot note for your own future.

In 1994, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a difficulty even of having food. Thinking it was self karma accumulated in the past, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never gave up. Also, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took it as a opportunity Buddhas and Bodhisattvas gave to let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have some time and space for self-criticism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never said it a punishment from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Every time we finish conducting a ritual, we have to recite the Aspiring Bodhimind Prayer, as Bodhicitta is extremely important. Without generating Bodhicitta, a Vajrayana practitioner is really unable to get improvement in Buddhist practice, no matter how well he observes precepts. Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche and Drubwang Rinpoche’s life had been prolonged because they were to stay in this world for the sentient beings. Their Bodhicitta just thoroughly changed their karma. It illustrated that when we obtain enlightenment of Bodhicitta, we are able to abandon our body as well as all external things. Hence, while doing everything, we do not have to think about the requital nor being attached.

(26) If, lacking ethical conduct, one fails to achieve one’s own purpose, the with to accomplish others’ purpose is laughable. Therefore, guarding ethics devoid of aspirations for worldly existence is the bodhisattvas’ practice.

This practice is very important. Besides, the Five Precepts, bodhisattva vows, bhiksu precepts, nuns’ precepts, the most important precepts are the last two one – “bodhichitta vows“ and “the precepts of Samaya.” If one transgresses the Five Precepts, bodhisattva vows, bhiksu precepts, nuns’ precepts, one could still restart to abide by precepts as long as he is willing to make repentance in accordance with Dharma before Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and guru. However, if one transgresses the bodhichitta vows and the precepts of Samaya, there is only one dharma of Vajrasattva to help him re-abide by the precepts of Samaya. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche owns this dharma.

“The precepts of Samaya” is to vow to generate Bodhicitta to benefit sentient beings, and vow to learn and cultivate Buddha-Dharma. When one transgresses the precepts of Samaya, he breaks his promise with Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, guru and sentient beings. One who transgresses the precepts of Samaya is not able to change his karma. A disciple who left Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said he did not transgress the Five Precepts but only the precepts of Samaya so it did not matter. In fact, the precepts of Samaya are most important, particularly in Vajrayana. It is also transgressing the precepts of Samaya when you are arrogant or angry to your guru who has ever oral transmitted mantras or Buddhist teachings to you. After you transgress the precepts, it will be very hard for you to have opportunity of learning and cultivating Buddha-Dharma in the future. This is the worst and miserable thing.

Precepts are not a tool of punishment or reward. The Buddha set up these precepts for helping us restrain ourselves to purify and concentrate our mind. If we could abide by no killing, we could therefore attain the concentration of no killing. If we could abide by no drinking alcohol, our mind could surely be concentrated. There is a dharma master in northern Taiwan saying that he has to drink alcohol for his health in the bad climate. He says it is allowable. The truth is, both in Exoteric Buddhism and Tantric Dharma, alcohol is not allowed to drink unless as a medicine. Moreover, one should not encourage other people to drink with him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever mentioned this dharma master’s behavior to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, and His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche responded in smile that the dharma master could transmit only four precepts, not the Five Precepts, for he himself does not observe all of them. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ordained disciples took refuge as an up?sik? under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not received the bhiksu precepts, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can not transmit the nun’s precepts to her. If she needs to receive the precepts, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would request His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to transmit to her. Thus is the precepts abided by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

“Precept” is referred to things one restrain from committing. All the things beyond one’s capacity and harming others are totally prohibited. It is stated in the Sutra of The Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva that “The ordinary are doing nothing but committing sins when a thought arises or when an idea is generated.” Since all the thoughts arise are for one’s own profit. For example, some people work for a company but doing his own business outside company. They still think they are smart and of great ability. In fact, they already break the precept of “no stealing.” Those who transgress the precept of “no stealing” would become poor and in straitened circumstances sooner or later. Other people will deceive them for the money inappropriately earned. The smarter one at earning money will faster run out of it. The stingy one who is unwilling to do charity may finally use up his wealth in medical treatment. Many people get a result that they do not die until their wealth is consumed. If they could have had a little wisdom to donate his money on the virtuous activities, his disease may have gotten better.

Precept is to help us to have a pure and clean mind. Only when one’s mind is calm, one can then generate wisdom. So precept, meditation, and wisdom are a trinity and cannot be separated. If someone practices Buddhism without holding precepts, then he is definitely not a Buddhist. The rules of precepts in Buddhism are livelier, not like the precepts of non-Buddhist religions; hence, there are rules for breaking the precepts and lifting the precepts. For example, we keep the no-killing precept so we do not eat meat; but if certain medicine needs to use animal internal organs for curing illnesses, that is not counted as breaking the precept, but counted as lifting the precept. Of course, this is also a matter of personal views on the precepts.

The most important principle of keeping precepts is that one should not be proud and should not think one has kept purer and cleaner precepts than others have done. Having this kind of thinking is considered as breaking the precept, the precept of not lying, as well. How could you know that others have not kept certain of their precepts purer and cleaner than yours? Many people, after burning three scars in their arms, began to let people see their arms all the time and indicated intentionally or unintentionally that they had been holding a Bodhisattva’s precepts. This is showing off and pride, and is completely different than the humbleness taught in Buddhism. The meaning of keeping precepts is that before we can benefit all sentient beings, we should not harm all sentient beings. For example, if one argues with others, one does not keep his precept and should not be considered as a Buddhist.

“Precept” is definitely a tool which has to be used by all Buddhists. However, after one has attained a pure and clean mind, it is not important whether one keeps one’s precepts or not. This means that when one’s mind has become pure and clean all of one’s behaviors will not have thoughts about oneself and what one does, regardless of giggling, laughing, angry, or scolding, are all Buddha dharma. There are four types of dharmas in Esoteric Buddhism: dharma of appeasing, dharma of conciliating, dharma of enhancing, dharma of eliminating. However, from the viewpoint of precept, one cannot kill sentient beings, then why is there the dharma of elimination? This is because the dharma of elimination does not kill for the reasons of hatred, angriness, or love, but kills for the reasons of benefiting sentient beings. These four types of dharmas are used to strengthen the power of Buddhism in order to benefit more sentient beings, rather than to satisfy one’s desires. So the dharma scriptures call these the four pure and clean dharmas which should not be conducted for one’s benefits; this is pure and clean.

Precept is for us not to hurt all sentient beings, not to take things not belonging to us, not to do things which would have any chance to harm others and all sentient beings, and not to let sentient beings have worries. For example, if you feel annoyed after seeing a swarm of ants and then use smokes to expel them, this breaks the precept since you let the ants have worries. In fact, the most important precept is not in one’s behaviors, but in one’s mind. For example, it is considered as breaking precepts that although you have already not eaten meat or taken any alcohol, you think all day long the deliciousness of eating meat or the comfortableness of drinking alcohol. If one doe not have any thought of breaking the precepts in one’s mind, one’s behavior will naturally not violate the precepts. A person who can keep pure and clean precepts will have a pure and clean appearance naturally and people will like to be close to him.

Buddha Sakyamuni once told the following story. One day, Buddha and a disciple walked along a road in front of a flock of pigeons. When Buddha Sakyamuni walked a little bit closer to the flock, the pigeons saw him and came close to him. When the disciple walked closer to the flock, the pigeons all flew away. The disciple then asked Buddha Sakyamuni, “Buddha, I have kept the no-killing precept in all of my life. Why are these pigeons afraid of seeing me, but not afraid of seeing Buddha?” Buddha said, “Because I have not had the habits of killing while you still have.” This is the meaning that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just talked about. Sometimes, you want to kill something because you see it hinders you; this is killing. Even if the behavior has not been done yet, any such killing attitude in your mind will still have its effects. Hence, if there is any person who says, “Do not tell the guru, I will be scolded!”, his mind has already broken the precept of no-hatred. If one is afraid of being scolded, one is not admitting his mistakes; how could a person who does not admit his mistakes keep the precepts?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often said that we Buddhists should not go to sing karaoke since it will arouse our restless minds. Although some people do not go to sing karaoke, they would still hum occasionally; it means that their restless minds still exist and they hope to reduce the restless mind through this music, which means that he has not kept his precepts.

The precepts of all practitioners are the same. Especially when we practice the dharma of Yidam deity, we must keep the precepts between us and the Yidam deity which are the Yidam deity’s oaths and vows. If we follow the Yidam deity’s teachings, vows, behaviors, and thoughts to keep the precepts, the body of the precepts will be perfect. The body of precepts is equivalent to a protective net. If you can keep you body of precepts, even if the karmic creditors in your past lives want to invade or interfere with you, the gods of dharma protectors will protect you and ask your karmic creditors to wait a while. Hence, to check whether you have kept the precepts, you can know it by seeing if the things around you have changed or not. The change here is not necessarily the change for the better; it is something that used to hinder you in the past, but is not an obstacle to you now; this means that you begin to keep the body of your precepts. No matter a lay practitioner or a monk or a nun, if you do not have the body of precepts, you will have many obstacles.

Do not think that little things do not matter. One day, a flight was delayed and the economy-class guests were invited to rest in the VIP room. A pair of parents told their child who was about four or five years old, “These things in the VIP room are free, take them as many as possible!” Now many parents are like this, creating greedy minds for their children, letting the child take things that should not be taken and violate the precept of “no-stealing”. When growing up, this kind of children will absolutely take other people’s stuff. In your eyes, these may look like a small matter; however, Buddha dharma uses the method of gradual influence, that is, uses the correct matters and concepts to train and influence our mind gradually; this requires a period of time and will not see the effects immediately. If we use virtuous matters to influence our mind, our mind will gradually and completely become virtuous; if we use evil matters to influence our mind, our mind will gradually become evil.

It is said to transgress the precepts if the one of our conducts, thoughts, or words do harms to others. In fact, several so-called cultivators in the Buddhist centers that talks about Buddha Dharma all day long do not observe the precepts since they scold their husbands or sons when they return home. It is a joke to say to benefit sentient beings without observing the precepts. When we seek refuge, we have been started to observe the precepts, particularly the Samaya precepts. At that time, we have vowed the verses: “I seek refuge under the Guru, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. I will not seek refuge in non-Buddhists since I have sought refuge under Buddha. I will commit killing since I have sought refuge under Dharma. I will not follow evil friends since I have sought refuge in Sangha. I will stop all evildoing, conduct all virtuous activities, and purify myself by these teachings. These are the teachings by Buddha”. What does it mean to seek refuge under Sangha or Guru? To seek refuge under Guru, one must obey Guru’s teachings. It is evil act that not only to disobey Guru’s teachings to talk back in defiance.

Although you all know precepts and think that you are observing precepts, actually each of you transgress the precepts everyday. Why do you transgress precepts so easily? It is because of your vast selfness. You really can’t perceive the compassion and patience that Buddhas possess towards us. Buddhas do not seek after anything, and are always persuading us and teachings us, hoping that we could escapes suffering and attain happiness. Therefore, the essences of the precepts are very important. The reason why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to be enthroned is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never transgresses refuge vows since taking refuge, nor does transgress the Bodhisattva vow, Bodhicitta vow, Samaya vow since learning Buddhism. It will create obstacles to the practices once the precepts are transgressed. Those who can’t correct their habitual patterns think that it is too hard to learn Buddhism because there are too many constraints. In fact, it is not constraints. All the precepts that Buddha talks about are to refrain us from falling into the three evil realms. They are the lowest requirement. It is like how police tell you do not drive after drinking, otherwise, you will be fined or you might have accidents. But there are still drunk driving deaths everyday. Why? Because you don’t want to be supervised.

Every precepts that Buddha said is related to our future. These precepts are different from the non-Buddhist’s Ten Precepts which are the agreement with the Lord. However, the Buddhist precepts is one of the tools or methods that help us attain enlightenment. They are not constraints nor punishment.

The Buddhist precepts are to help us living better life in the future, i.e. to live a life of less affliction. One who could observe the precepts such as not killing, not drinking will have good health, and so spend less money to seek for medical treatment. Afflictions reduce less and less arguments at home either. The cause of family disharmony is from killings or drinking in last lives. Therefore, the precepts should be applied strictly in the daily life. Those who observe the precepts will not break the laws effortlessly. Some break the laws by trumped up charges, or due to karma of past lives. However, those who break the laws on their own initiate do not observe the precepts absolutely.

It is easy to receive the precepts but difficult to observe them. Because we can’t set our mind at ease due to our greed, hatred, ignorance, pride, and doubt of past lives, Buddhas therefore introduced the precepts to help us attain enlightenment and gain liberation from births and deaths. Some are afraid of taking refuge because they think they will be supervised by many rules. But they do not know these rules are the basic principles that we have to follow to be a human being. As long as we could observe the precepts, we could purify ourselves, gain the meditative concentration, and enlighten the wisdom. Therefore you should not transgress them. Why Buddha Sakyamuni advised his disciples to “take the precepts as their master” right before his death? It was because the precepts is like a Guru that could help us gain the liberation from birth and death. Therefore, we should not forget them, nor disobey them.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to propagate Buddhism, there were a few Rinpoches and lamas said to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche that he’d better not let a Chinese person enthroned on the dharma seat. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche replied that “he was one of my disciples 12 years ago, and now he is still my disciple”. What His Holiness meant why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could be enthroned is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never disobey the refuge precepts or Samaya precepts, and have achieved all the conducts that a Buddhist should act.

You transgress the precepts all the time, so you are scolded unavoidably. The Glorious Jewel Buddhist center is the place where you learn to gain liberation from birth and death, therefore those who can’t be scolded or talk back in defiance should not come back anymore. Hereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will scold you much more than before to reveal your secret in public, to test if you do obey the 37 practices. If you don’t, you do transgress the precepts, and are not eligible to learn Buddhism in this center.

You should understand observing the precepts that are introduced by Buddha is so precious and rare. You should achieve obeying them, and not violate your essence of the precepts. You should introspect yourselves and be aware of your body, speech, and mind. You should abandon your selfness. If you still have the thinking that you are right and others are wrong, you will not observe the precepts. When some say something bad about us, we should thank to them.

There is one master to supervise the precept substances of all ordained cultivators in the monasteries. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is your guru, and so supervise yours in this center. If you still have to willing to observe the precepts, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will scold you at first. And later on if you still do not make any progress, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will expel you from this center.

If you could accept and achieve all of these 37 guidelines, you will be able to practice the Bodhisattva path easily. In fact, the dharma talks that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have given are all from the 37 practices. These are also the preparation for us to be on the Bodhisattva path from being an ordinary person. It is just the preparation so do not think you have already achieve the attainment of Bodhisattva. Once you have achieved all the preparation, you will be able to receive the tantric teachings. Why transmission of tantras is so strict? It is because the tantric teachings could help people, and might hurt people as well if the mind of the practitioner is not correct.
