Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company.

June 7, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the importance of Vajrasattva dharma for practicing Buddha Dharma. Gampopa had ever enlightened that Buddha Shakyamuni’s teachings were categorized into two different approaches. The first approach is through the Prajnaparamita-yana, which employs the cause as the means of practices, the way that the Exoteric Buddhism is practiced. It believes that the sentient beings have been being dragged by the power of karma to continuously reincarnate in the six realms, and therefore no evil effects will be emerged if no evil causes are made. But it takes very long time, three Great Incalculably Long Eons, to attain Buddhahood in this way. Ordinary people conduct karmic deeds resulted from the afflictions of the three poisons: greed, hatred, and ignorance, and therefore have been reincarnating in the six realms. The so-called the Saints mentioned in the Buddha Sutra are those people who are recognized with ethical words and deeds of high standard beyond the mundane world. The Saints that Buddha had said are those practitioners who have attained void of nature, who are able to liberate themselves from reincarnation and benefit the sentient beings. Many people who give Buddhist teachings consider Buddha Dharma as the knowledge to study. Yet the big problem behind it is that sooner or later things will go wrong if Buddha Dharma is separated from daily lives. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took the mistake made by a disciple, Ma Bing-Yi, as an example to give the enlightenment. After the completion of the Lamp Offering and the Lama Chopa puja of May 29, 2009 in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Kyoto, Japan, Ma Bing-Yi, without granting the permission from the Buddhist center, took it upon himself to open the windows of the venue and threw the biscuit crumbs out of the windows. In addition, he replied that he threw the biscuit crumbs out to let the ants on the ground to eat. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that he seemingly was so compassionate to give the ants something to eat; but his problems could be observed from his small/minor deeds. He had taken refuge for ten years. He thought himself that he had taken refugee for a long time, and completed the practices of making full prostration, reciting 100-syllable mantra, and mandala offering, nothing had happened to him, and his career was stable, he felt he had practiced Buddha dharma well. However, from the fact that no one in his family had come to learn Buddhism, we know he actually has not changed. Being a guest in other people’s house, he opened the door and the windows without the owner’s authorization; he thought that other person’s home was not his own and the venue of dharma practice was not his own, so it did not matter to him to throw something out the window, lacking respectfulness in his heart. This behavior is like someone visited your home, opened the windows of your house without your permission, and then threw your garbage out of the windows. Are these acceptable to you? Moreover, he did not concern that this might attract ants and the ants attracted might come into the house someday and got hurt accidentally by the cleaning persons. He was also too lazy to walk to the main door for throwing. How could he practice Buddha dharma if he was afraid of enduring hardship? How could he learn Phowa? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: The first thing of learning Buddhism is to learn to be a right person. Selfish person like this will not have a merciful and compassionate heart, and lazy person will not benefit sentient beings. One without the attentive mind will not understand sentient beings’ sorrows. One without knowing their beings’ sorrows cannot release their sorrows. All of you may think that these are all small mistakes, but small mistakes, which are not corrected, will turn into big mistakes eventually.

One should not consider that he would not have any karmic effects after repenting. The reason why everyone frequently makes mistakes is because repentance is not practiced correctly. Taking hardship could replenish the virtues. Many people are not aware of little things and indulge their minds. We must correct ourselves according to the teachings of Buddha Dharma. Sooner or later critical problems will happen if we don’t correct our own habitual behavior. What makes learning Buddhism difficult is that one does not know oneself because he only looks at problems of other people but not at his own. The so called carelessness is because of not paying attention. So reciting mantra is to train our mind not to be distracted.

The other teaching is the secret Vajrayana, which employs the effects as the means of practices. The concept of these teachings is that all the sentient beings are equipped with qualities, which are necessary in attaining the Buddhahood, and a nature that is as clear and pure as those of the Buddhas. Nonetheless, they started to create karma with an thought of ignorance and thereby have been dragged by the karma accumulated during their previous lives. The foundation of philosophies of Vajrayana is solid. It is the teachings to be practiced from one’s nature, but not through the study of literal meanings. Having ignorance has nothing to do with being ill-tempered. It refers to an unclear state of mind, which can only be cleansed of its filth by means of Buddhist teachings. However, one’s own determines the speed of the cleansing. If one conducts true practice in Vajrayana, at least half of his karma accumulated in the previous lives will be eliminated. Such elimination is done through paying off the debts. If one is worried about having to pay off the debts, he will remain in the tangle until the debts are settled in his last years.

What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches is no other than Buddhist teachings in the secret Vajrayana. As is known by the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche supervises and expects highly of his disciples, which is a teaching method adopted by very few Gurus nowadays because it does not meet the market demand. While some people feel scared and thereby dare not come to study, some agree this way of learning completely. It is because the Buddhist teachings are no business operation and there is no need to meet the market demand. Though the external appearance of the Buddhist teachings changes in accordance with each distinct local culture, the essence of them has always been the same and will never be altered under the influence of any secular studies, common knowledge, or cultures. The Buddhist teachings eliminate the existing ego of the four ejects of ego and are not affected by time. In fact, where does the concept of time come from? There is no such a notion called “time” in outer space. Why does the Earth rotate and have a different rotation rate than the other planets? The reason lies in the fact that the Earth is under the influential thoughts of the sentient beings in the six realms of the universe.

The founder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, Lord Jigten Sumgon, who manifested leprosy, didn’t pray for his own wellness but prayed that the Yidams would guide and receive him upon his death. When Jigten Sumgon thought of Guru’s instructions and blessings, he then aroused great mercy and compassion to the countless sentient beings, hoping that they could receive instruction on the Buddhist teachings. As this thought emerged, the Naga king inside Jigten Sumgon’s body left with its offspring and Jigten Sumgon recovered his health. Thereby, the karmic fruit ripened and disappeared really fast. Such manifestation aimed to make people realize that practice should be conducted accordingly in this way. Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has started to repent ever since his Buddhism path was initiated, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still developed skin cancer later in time. Without undergoing the chemotherapy or any surgical operation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche felt delighted that his debts could be paid off and simply let the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas take charge. Just like the Buddha Sakyamuni, who had been showing repentance with a pure mind throughout his previous lives, 9 hardships still occurred upon his attaining the Buddhahood. Nevertheless, their karmic forces didn’t have any impact on the Buddha and went past quickly. Only when one practices compassion, the wronged relatives and creditors will let go of him. The reason why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been so strict on the disciples is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants everybody’s problems to be solved in this life. Therefore, one should not employ his own thinking to deliberate upon the Buddhist teachings.

Vajrasattva is the Sambhogakaya to help the sentient beings who have aroused the determination to practice the Bodhisattva Path. There is a special curing dharma by Vajrasattva. The most important in practice of Vajrasattva is repentance. One has to repent oneself with a pure heart which should not without expectation of encountering no bad things, acquiring no disease, or the karmic creditors’ leaving after he admits his faults and repents to Buddha and Bodhisattvas. With the heart full of cravings and thoughts of give-and take conditions; the repentance one makes will take no effect at all. To repent is to acknowledge one’s faults and joyfully accept any outcome. To reform is to put an end to the evil and never commit again. Only by repenting, the strength to reform will emerge. Only by reforming, one could vow to repent. Repentance and reform are tow things but actually they are linked together. A demon is the one who has accumulated plenty of merits in the past lives. He would also teach people to keep precepts and practice virtuous deeds and moral teachings, but he never advises people obtain liberation of reincarnation. Demons could be classified into demons of the mind and outer demons. We are affected by demon of the mind, not by outer demons. Buddhism classifies the eye into five categories; namely, the Physical eye, Heavenly eye, Dharma eye, Wisdom eye, and the Buddha eye. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed retreat in the Lapchi Mountain, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw with the Dharma eye and Wisdom eye the sentient beings of the six realms suffering so much that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche kept crying for 2 hours. After retreat was completed, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reported this to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche confirmed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had realized the Emptiness.

There is one disciple who does not tell her husband that she has cancer, with an excuse of concerning that her husband may slander the Buddha. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that she should not make a supposition about her husband’s reaction. Perhaps her husband might seek for help from the Buddha together with her. Furthermore, at that time when his husband knows such a big hidden event, he may feel he must be ever cheated by more events before. It looked like that she was worried that her husband might feel miserable, but actually it is the disciple herself would be sad. This is a thought of selfishness and a behavior of slandering the Buddha.

For repentance, it needs the help of Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to mediate the karmic creditors. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recovered from the skin cancer because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew how to repent, without any fear by knowing that he has something to rely on after death. Believe it and not to seek after anything, then repentance would be purified. Doing the practices such as making full prostration, recting Vajrasattva mantras, and making Mandala offering is just to create supportive conditions. Whether the evil conditions would turn out to be virtuous ones depends on whether or not one truly corrects his heart. We could tell from the phrase “the flowers of crime fly away”, depicted in the Jeweled Repentance Sutra of Emperor Liang Wu Ti actually that since the crime could fly away, it also would fly back while one’s heart is not correct.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to learn and cultivate the Buddha’s teachings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made repentance on behalf of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s late father everyday, without requiring anything at all. Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw in dream that the body of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s father had became blue in color and with Ancestor Lu in the God realms. It does not take effect if one bargains while making repentance. Indeed, the strength of virtuousness will redouble if one asks for nothing for him self, as the Buddha has wished one could attain this kind of power of vow. Though proclaimed by some people, it is a wrong concept of that the merits and virtues accumulated from Buddhism practice would not be enough for one to consume and therefore thinking that he won’t dedicate the merits and virtues to sentient beings.

In the dharma of Vajrasattva, there is a phrase of “wishing me and all sentient beings in the Three Realms (Sanskrit: Trailokly)”. The Three Realms are, first, realm of Sensuous Desire (Sanskrit: Kamadhatu) which includes all sentient beings in the six realms of reincarnation (Jade Emperor, God, and Jesus are all in this realm); second, realm of Form (Sanskrit: Rupaadhatu) whose sentient beings contain no physical body but light; third, realm of Formless (Sanskrit: Arupadhatu) whose sentient beings contain no physical body, no light, but only one mind/consciousness. A person who practices meditations and virtues will get into the realm of Sensuous Desire. All sentient beings in the Three Realms will reincarnate. And the sentient beings above the realm of Heaven could only know this fact before they die; knowing that they have not liberated from the cycles of reincarnation will make them hatred and let them think Buddha dharma is useless, which will cause them fall into the realm of Hell. So wishing for virtues in the realm of human or heaven cannot reach the final truth; one needs to repent with a pure mind. One should repent as soon as possible when one still has the physical strength to do it; only one’s own practices can change one’s own future, even help one’s family. Repentance is among the seven-limbed of offering to Buddha and Bodhisattvas. Because those who have done repentance will definitely follow and maintain the precepts and respect the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and all sentient beings, repentance is a kind of offerings and will let one obtain virtues. So before practicing any dharma, one should repent first and all dharmas one practiced should be for all sentient beings.

True repentance requires one to tell the guru the matters of repentance. Only if there were no guru or Buddhist master within a radius of five hundred miles, one could then repent to a Buddha statue. Not speaking out one’s repentance is all because one does not respect the guru or one does not want other people to know; these are not a complete repentance with one’s body, speech, and mind. If one repent without speaking it out and just think in one’s mind, then the effect of karma will last for a very long time. The so-called phrase of “a straight mind is equivalent to a venue of dharma practice” appropriately describes the teaching of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who directly pointed out disciples’ tiny flaw and corrected them.

Merit is the power to liberate one from the cycles of birth and death and to benefit all sentient beings; merit cannot be used up. Repentance can turn virtues into merits.

All the troubling causes that obstructing all beings”: In Hinayana, practitioners want no afflictions and practice to cut off afflictions. They deem afflictions as poison. Consequently, monks and nuns of Hinayana tradition even do not bring Buddist Rosary with them. Nor do they cook. Believers would make offerings to monks and nuns. They eat whatever they can obtain. Although practitioners of Mahayana also deem afflictions poison, they know such poison can be transformed to medicine after distilling. But this process of transformation takes a very long time. For practitioners of Vajrayana, afflictions are medicine. They can be directly utilized in various situations and beneficial for practicing Buddhism. For this reason, it is faster for practitioners of Vajrayana to achieve accomplishment when practicing. In the fifty-three visits of sudhana-sresthi-daraka, some Bodhisattvas visited would utilize killing, great voracity or hatred to liberate beings. Bodhisattvas might liberally use a variety of means without any limitations, but their behaviors can not be understood by ordinary human beings. However, from the perspective of selfish or selfless, it is clear if Bodhisattvas carry out conducts or not.

Repenting wholeheartedly for my evildoings”: Wholeheartedly means when you repent you should repent without any other thoughts except of repentance. If you do not repent with a pure and clean heart, the act of repentance would lack of respectfulness. You shouldn’t ask or expect anything and ought to accept everything happened.

Without violating your vows till you die”: Bodhisattvas’ repentance is to vow that all beings will be liberated from sorrows because of my repentance. To practice Buddhism accordingly means to first act upon what one’s guru had taught, no matter whether the actions would achieve anything. If one listens to the teachings of one’s guru with desires and suspicions, the power of the teachings would be diminished. If one is faithful enough to one’s guru, one would not worry. If one does not repent, one will never be liberated. When one’s mind doesn’t change, one’s life can’t be obviously altered.

The power of Vajrasattva is immensely huge and your life after lives’ karma can absolutely be helped to resolve in this life. It depends on whether your repentant power is enough or not and whether the heart of mercy and compassion you will have or not. Yet, people usually just read out the phrases in the doctrine without thinking.

All beings in the three realms once had causes and conditions with us in past lives. We absolutely have reincarnated over one hundred lives. The evil conditions are definitely more than virtual conditions in each life and accumulated constantly. Thus, we have to make up our minds and manage well in this life. Every single mind and thought of ordinary people is sin and karma and selfishness is sin.

This time the conduction of the fire puja by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in Japan lasted for nearly three hours. During the conduction, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was reciting the mantras, holding the offering items, and contemplating; how it could be achieved? It relies on the pure mind that does not seek after anything and completely following the text. The ritual performing would not have been perfected as long as t is for one own benefit. A disciple as the work staff had showed distraction to minor things and therefore did not aware what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was going to pass things down to him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said because the disciple considered himself as a leader responsible for the dharma affairs of the mandala, so looked down on the others, and therefore was worrying that he would be rebuked then for any mistakes by the others. Thus, the disciple constantly watched what the others were doing and thus forgot who was conducting the ritual. The disciple ought to learn his role as a servant to the guru, and should not think he was the leader. True repentance would not arouse in the mind if one does not get rid of the arrogance. Humility is a very basic quality to cultivate for you disciples to work for the guru.

One who is in charge of certain things for this Buddhist center has to watch one’s own mind, be humble and not to offend the others. It is the sentient beings that make your chances to offer service. Therefore remember to speak to them tactfully. If one learns the dharma in the mind of arrogance, the least is to become a king in ghost realm or the more is to become descends of the mara. When practicing the dharma, one has to practice controlling his mind to be attentive. Don’t count yourself as the key role. Even though you might be a key character, without the assistance from the other supporters, the mission could not be accomplished well. In fact, playing different roles of people makes everything in this world up. They all are just the cause and effect. Don’t care about what the others praise or how they despise your doing, but do things right with your utmost dedication.

All sufferings result from greed, hatred, and ignorance. It is very hard to cut them off thoroughly. The greed will be reduced by not to have the discriminating thought to tell the good or the bad, as well as not to be concerned for personal gains or losses. Hatred originates from greed. The hatred will begin when the greedy desire can not be satisfied by what have been attached. And furthermore it is the ignorance not to apply the Buddha dharma after the hatred is aroused. When the greedy thought begins, try to calm yourself down and recite the mani mantra (if you have been transmitted the teachings of Avalokiteśvara), and contemplate the appearance of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After a while, your thought might be changed. Quieting down and inspecting you everyday will reduce the power of greed, hatred, and ignorance. To end all of them, you have to attain the accomplishment in void of nature. Do not consider the greed as a dreadful monster: making money is not the greed, while caring about other people’s views is the greed.

Learning Buddhism helps us to reduce the negligence that we used to make. The precepts are not set to punish or control us. Do not learn Buddhism surreptitiously. The Buddhism with a history of three thousand years has never been forbidden so it is not superstitious. It is the teachings that instruct us how to see the problems through our own heart and how to benefit others. Is there anything unpresentable to learn Buddhism? Thinking of doing full prostration all the time will heal the illness is superstition. Adopting a vegetarian diet is personal habit for food. If it is easy or not depends on your own heart. If you take it easy, even one bowel of rice is enough. If you take it uneasy, even a table full of dainty dishes is still not uneasy.

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and enlightened the Great Master Gampopa’s teachings about important attitudes to practice Buddhism. Before the start of the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the disciples who did not separate wheel chaired male and female attendees from different places in the venue that they should not transgress the rules for their own convenience. The Master Gampopa, whom receiving teachings from his Guru Milarepa, had propagated and promoted the teachings he had learned gloriously in Tibet. He is the founder of the Kagyu Lineage. Lord Jigten Sumgon has ever enlightened that there are three criteria for one to propagate Buddha Dharma: To teach what Buddha Shakyamuni had already said, what the past accomplished mahasiddas (including one’s own guru) had said or the enlightenment states one has attained from practicing. However one’s guru must confirm the so-called enlightenment states that one has attained such states. Buddha sutras should not be explained by words but to be realized by practicing.

Practitioners must practice to obtain merits but not virtues as normally called by people. Actual when one is enjoying the virtues, those virtues are being used up and disappearing simultaneously! For example having food to eat, clothe to wear and salary to earn, these will actually use up the virtues. Virtues are obtained by practicing charity, precept and endurance from past lives. They will be used up. Practicing with desires will turn merits into virtues, too. Buddha Dharma asks for nothing. As said in the Diamond Sutra that if a Bodhisattva is not considered as a Bodhisattva if he thinks that he is liberating the sentient beings. The reason is it will fall as virtues if there is attachment. Merits are different from virtues. One implores merits not because of asking for better health. To liberate oneself from life and death, one must practice for merits. As a matter of fact, virtues are very easy to obtain by practicing. All kinds of religions can practice for virtues. Moreover, paving roads, helping people and conducting good deeds can obtain virtues. The virtues one has obtained in this life can only be used in the next life. However, one may not necessarily be born in the realms of human or god, it maybe the animal realm instead. Just like the elephant Lin Wang of the zoo. He had designated people’s protection and care and his life was better than what we have now. There were people to commemorate him after he died. This is because he had practiced well. Do not practice because of asking for a better life in this life. Doing so will gain virtues. If one truly wishes things become better, one should personally give half of his salary to help those people who really need, to give away coffins or medication etc…It takes only three years to change everything of yours. However, everyone can not achieve this.

The biggest difference between Buddhism and the other religions lies in the merits, which are accumulated vast enough to continuously listen to the Buddhist teachings without any obstacles in order to make up the mind of leaving the suffering ocean of reincarnation. Making offerings without asking for anything in return will earn merits. Additionally, giving up everything in order to make offerings can also accumulate merits. Upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s completion of the retreat in the snow-caped mountains of Lapchi in 2007, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche personally led Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to conduct a three-day fire puja. When the fire puja was completed perfectly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche showed his gratitude by doing three full prostrations to His Holiness on a muddy ground, just wet by the rain. This was an offering of one’s body indeed. Moreover, since the Buddhist dharma is like the earth, without which nothing will exist, the prostrations were also a gratitude to the earth. Besides, they were also to abandon one’s arrogance, and not to concern with his clothes and body.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then took two sharing stories from two disciples who received help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as examples to enlighten the attendees. One disciple was diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy and originally her doctor suggested her to undergo a surgery the same evening. But she went to the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company at Yi-Xian Road, to make prostrations to the Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and implored for help. With the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the fetus was naturally aborted, and then she did not have the ectopic pregnancy when she was checked up the next day. Another disciple’s mother was suddenly suffering from acute myocardial infraction and then hospitalized immediately. After examination, two of the three coronary arteries in her heart were blocked and her heart suffered severe myocardial necrosis. The hospital issued a notification of critical condition and had her having an emergent cardiac catheterization. That disciple also went to the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company at Yi-Xian Road, to make prostrations to the Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and implored for help. With the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, one of her blocked coronary arteries was patent after the catheterization and his mother recovered extraordinarily soon and was discharged from the hospital smoothly. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche came back to Taiwan, this disciple soon went to Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company to report to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche about the condition of his patient mother. Before his reporting, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche already pointed out clearly that two of his mother’s coronary arteries were blocked and one of them was patent after catheterization, which could not be diagnosed without precision medical instruments. Fearing that people might call them superstitious, these disciples had received helps and yet were afraid to explain to the doctors that all these were due to the Buddhist teachings and their Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. Even Catholics and Christians would claim “God helped their illness”. Why were you afraid to claim that Buddha Dharma and your Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped you? Were you ashamed of Buddha Dharma? These disciples did not possess gratitude although they said they did. They took advantage of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the Guru and regarded the Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help as their own, as thus they don’t have gratitude, reverence, and did not make any offerings. Whenever Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche obtained any valuables, including Dharma instruments, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always offered them to the Guru first. One disciple had been given a Green Tara thangka as a gift. He was trying to pray Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to consecrate thangka that he would make prostrations to every day so that he could be getting better. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not accept his offerings and neither consecrated the thangka for each time he prayed for the consecration. The disciple increased his offering every time he implored for consecration to the amount of 500,000 and even one million NTD, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche neither took his offering nor consecrated his thangka. The reason lies in the fact that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not transmitted the Green Tara yet and that the disciple had an incorrect heart when making an offering. He thought Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s rejection was due to the insufficient amount of offering. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: The mercy and compassion of the Guru are not meant for promoting the desires of his disciples.

Only merits will help us change the future. If one merely prays for virtues, the virtues will be definitely mixed up with some evils. Emperor Wu of Liang regulated all the ordained monks and nuns to adopt a vegetarian diet, built many Buddhist monasteries, had numerous Buddhist sutras translated and copied, and even translated some sutra in person. Emperor Wu of Liang, who had promoted so many Buddhist activities, asked Bodhidharma whether he had earned merits. Bodhidharma answered “none; only virtues was earned.” Emperor Wu of Liang was engaged in the Buddhist activities with arrogance and greed for merits. At the end, Emperor Wu of Liang starved to death in a military mutiny because he did not have the merits to change his karma, and thereby was unable to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Gampopa has ever enlightened that we ought to serve our Guru in everything as well as make offerings towards our Guru, whom we have received graces from. This is the fastest way to accumulate the merits. The merits of reverently making offering, even of a hair, to our Guru, who has significant graces to us, are much more than that of reverently making offering to immeasurable Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the space with immeasurable jewels. Everyone’s merits of are too less to concentrate even on reciting a Buddha’s name. One who possesses sufficient merits and virtues is able to enter into concentration naturally. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took a disciple, who has seen how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche showed reverence to His Holiness in India, as an example. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stood up as soon as His Holiness was going to stand up to leave, and kept standing before His Holiness returned to the seat and sat. However, in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company, the disciple still sat there when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stood up to leave. The act of the disciple showed that he had no reverent heart. Without the reverent heart, one makes no offering at all. The true offering is to remember each word by Guru, since Guru helps our future dharma body as well as wisdom life. Be reverent to the Three Jewels and keeping each thought arisen not for oneself, and then one will not make any mistake. A Guru has taken plenty of hardships to help the disciples attain accomplishment. For example, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche had made lots of advance preparation many years for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s retreat of 2007. For another example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has continuously and painstakingly practiced the Buddha’s teachings, presented how to serve Guru, kept precepts, etc., to help the disciples attain accomplishment. Ask yourselves, what kind of the heart you have to your Guru?

Jetsun Milarepa has furthermore enlightened on Gampopa’s teachings: Besides making offering to Guru, the merits accumulated by following Guru’s teachings accordingly are even greater. All the Dharmas taught by Guru are blessed. It is just as that while conducting the Lamp Offering ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche lighted the butter lamps in front of the Shakyamuni Buddha statue first and then lighted those before the Dharma Photo of His Holiness. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s butter lamps were lighted with His Holiness’s, and the next were those of the disciples and the believers lighted with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s, representing that the teachings are purely transmitted on. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always been following what His Holiness teaches without questioning or having his own thoughts. Even there might be differences between what His Holiness taught and what’s written in the texts, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not take the texts to ask His Holiness for instruction on the difference. It is because that His Holiness transmits a Dharma with a pure heart; therefore, even though there are some literally different wordings from the texts, the meanings are still the same. If one deliberates upon the texts all the time but does not perform retreat practices, one is not able to realize the meaning yet. So, just follow what Guru teaches us.

Do not misthink that one has to understand many profound names and forms to learn the Buddha’s teachings. In fact, there is no Buddha Dharma apart from this world. Buddha Dharma is for us to apply into our daily life. There is too much temptation in the current society. Only if we truly apply Buddha Dharma into our daily life, we would not go the wrong way. Jetsun Milarepa has ever said that one ought to truly practice in stages, but not invariably pursue understandings. It could be called practice only when Buddha Dharma is used in daily life. One who has performed retreat for more than 10 years is not necessarily great. Retreat is merely one of the ways of practice, and the most important is whether it is practiced with the mind or not. Many people listen to ‘The Great Treatise on the Stages of The Path to Enlightenment’ without truly practicing; thus, they would become conceited, instead. One can not pursue knowledge without true practice. On the other hand, if one merely truly practices but has no knowledge, he is not able to propagate Dharma, either. Both the 6th Patriarch HuiNeng and Monk KuangChin are illiterate. However, they have obtained understandings through true practices. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also started from true practice, by which is very efficient but painstaking.

Venerable Milarepa enlightened that one who practices the void of nature may have the following four ways of misunderstandings. The first is losing the void of nature in labeling, i.e. just to be attached to attain the realm of the void of nature. That is, one suppresses his own senses, perceptions, awareness, and behaviors by his own mind, and thought that he has attain the realm of the void of nature. We could hardly have any thoughts. Therefore, it is wrong to put aside all thoughts and then think he is feeling emptiness. Originally, there are movement and stillness. One can only keep one’s balance by having both movement and stillness. The second is losing the void of nature in the antidote, that is, to counteract the arousing of cravings such as greed or affliction by practicing meditation or contemplating emptiness, and to think that attain the realm of the void of nature. This has nothing to do with Buddha dharma and is a superficial cultivation, which cannot solve the root causes. If one uses the emptiness as the antidote to the arousing affliction, then one will never think the causes of affliction and never unable to find the cure from the root. In the modern time, there are some entrepreneurs who like to use this method and think it can alleviate one’s body and mind, reduce one’s desire, and obtain calmness. In fact, this is a very dangerous thing. Gradually, this let you develop the habit of relying on it and feel that only meditation can make you calm when you encounter anything.

The third is losing the void of nature in the basic nature of all knowables. Such a practitioner thinks that he can attain the Buddhahood as long as he attains the enlightenment of the void of nature. After learning Exoteric Buddhism for a period of time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once started to feel tired of everything, and wanted to give up the mundane/worldly matters in order to concentrate on dharma practices. When being at the peak of this feeling, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made a dream. In the dream, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, wearing tidy and decent clothes and standing in a clean place, saw another Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was giving Buddhist teachings in the filthy place across a counter from where the clean Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was, and all surrounding people were all full of joy. This dream let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realize that he was wrong. One should not dislike one’s own life because of learning Buddha dharma; one should inspect one’s deeds of daily life to see if any of them needs to be improved; one should never take the monastic ordination as an excuse for escaping from some worldly matters, which will cause people to misunderstand Buddha dharma. If one dislikes every of worldly matters then one will not be able to liberate all sentient beings. That’s why one should not reprimand others with Buddhism, and should inspect one’s own faults, not others’. The fourth of losing void of nature is losing void of nature by attachment to pure nature that all sentient beings possess as Buddhas do so that the diligent practices are not needed. This will lead to the misconception that “Meat and wine pass will through the intestines, while Buddha remains in the mind”.

One can’t understand the void of nature simply by the act of thinking. Such realization would come about when the time and conditions are ripened. During one retreat, after having dinner, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche walked around in the room. All of a sudden, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was kicking a chair’s foot and the sound “dong” emerged. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately entered into concentration and thus attains the realization that conditions originate with the nature of emptiness. The so-called “the inexpressibility of what Buddha taught” is to say that the realm of accomplishment by practicing Buddhism can’t be expressed by spoken words. Maha-prajna-paramita Sutra takes one third of the Buddhist Canon, and the “prajana” means the void of nature.

Gampopa enlightened: With the true void of nature, a practitioner will have the dharma eye so that he understands all phenomena in the universe. Through practicing Buddhism, practitioners would realize that the nature in essence is Buddhahood so as to act and live freely without feeling afflicted or elated. They would perceive all matters in accordance with the law of causes and conditions.

Many disciples have ever experienced that at the time they were scolded by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they would suddenly have no thoughts at all. It is because scolding is a kind of blessing, like a lion’s roar, bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to let the disciple restore his pure and clear nature at that moment. Not being interfered with any thought is also the status of Mahamudra. The experience of having no affliction or improper thought is also helpful to learn Mahamudra in the future. Why hundreds of the attendees in the puja held by Glorious Jewelry Buddhist Center could sit tight and quietly for 3 hours? It is due to the power of blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Besides, it is also because that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often blesses the disciple by scolding them, so they could be meditated more easily. There are also many people who have experienced that they could recite mantra with lesser improper thoughts at home after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolded them. Through the strength of meditation of Guru, Guru helps the disciple to be meditated, lets the disciples fear the awesome merits of Guru, and then the improper thoughts and affliction of the disciples would be naturally eliminated, and then, the wisdom arises. If a Guru always pampers the disciples, the wisdom of disciples would never arise. One has to rely on his Guru to restore the wisdom, but not by making offering.

Cultivating merits could attain the awakening of wisdom. With awakened wisdom, one will not cling to the explanation of name and form. Such spiritual realm cannot be described by words; just like a dumb person can not express other people about his dreams, no matter how wonderful the dreams are. Only Buddhas and gurus can truly know the spiritual realms. If one’s nature is not enlightened, nor is his wisdom awakened, it is hardly for him to be liberated from life and death.

Faith is the mother of all merits. Be faithful that you have all the conditions of attaining buddhahood; be faithful that all the teachings of Buddha will benefit yourself and sentient beings. This life is not appeared for a so-called mission, but for paying one’s debt. To pay your debt, you should not own new debt. You can not, therefore, eat any meat. To eat meat means to eat a future Buddha.  If one was a Buddhist practitioner or not in his past lives is not so important. The important matter is that if he has made up his mind to liberate himself from life and death and to benefit sentient beings. If one does not liberate from life and death this life, he will fall into the realm of Hell in one of his future lives. Be bound to seize the opportunity of learning Buddhism in this life. Missing this life, it is hard to know when the opportunity will come again.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company.

June 21, 2009

The regular puja was held at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. Disciples and believers listened with reverence to the audio recording of the teachings enlightened by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on May 11, 2003 in the Auditorium of Datong District Office of Taipei City. It was during the time of the worldwide SARS outbreak when this puja was hold. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche specially conducted the mantra recitation for the deity of plague, the White Vajra Mantra to cure all kinds of diseases taught by the Wrathful Guru Padmasambhava and bestowed every attendee with a chakra wheel amulet as well as an anti-SARS bottled nectar water blessed by tantric dharma. Meanwhile, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hoped that everyone could widely share such auspicious anti-SARS bottle nectar water to any sentient being who needs it.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: There was a old saying: “Embracing Buddha’s feet in one’s hour of need”. It means one must not stop being a friend of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas because every second there are incredible number of sentient beings imploring Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas cannot see or hear you if you suddenly appear. Many people think that they can have everything even though they have prostrated only once. Such thought is considered as an intolerable superstition. Many people did not attend the previous pujas because they were afraid of acquiring SARS due to too many people gathered. The pujas hold by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never been interrupted and yet no one has ever acquired SARS. For those who have never showed up regularly in the past yet come to attend the puja today because they heard tantric mantra will be conducted to fight against SARS. Having such discriminating heart, helps will be limited even though they have obtained the chakra wheel amulet. In fact, any dharma is beneficial if having faith to your guru.

One of the main practices by Tibetan Buddhism is reciting mantras. Therefore Tibetan Buddhism is also known as “Zhenyan School” (or Mantra School). As a matter of fact, the Great Compassion Mantra, Ten Short Mantra and Śūraṃgama Mantra etc are mantras related to the Zhenyan School. Therefore. some people’s rejection to Tibetan Buddhism is not reasonable. Actually they recite those mantra that are related to Tibetan Buddhism everyday. The Mantra of a Yidam has his aspiration power and his virtues and merits of life after life. Whenever we finish reciting the mantra one time, we will have obtained the blessings from yidam’s vow power, merits and virtues.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the practice of mantra recitation has to be conducted through very long-term meditative training, abiding by strict discipline, and doing retreats, during which the practitioner is required to recite mantras a specific number of times within limited period. What signs would appear is stated in the Dharma texts if one attains accomplishment during the retreat. The appearance of such signs indicates there is the power to benefit sentient beings. All the mantras should be recited on sentient beings’ behalf. The so-called Four Pure Dharmas is to say that it is pure to practice the dharma without thought of benefit oneself. The reciting the mantras in order to benefit themselves are not pure at all. The four dharmas are cessation, conciliation, enhancement and execution, and any virtuous Gurus have to perfect these four dharmas and attain the accomplishment during retreat before they can go to benefit the beings. The mantras you recite in daily life is to initiate the condition between the Yidam, and not able to become effective to benefit the sentient beings.

As to the way to recite the mantras, one, before reciting the mantras, has to bless the prayer beads with the special mantra, and then do the visualization followed by starting the mantra recitation. At completion of reciting the mantras, he has to recite one more mantra and contemplate again. If the reciting mantra would become effective simply by reciting one time Ten Small Mantras and seven times Great Compassionate Mantra for every morning prayer and night prayer, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wouldn’t have to take the hardship to perform the retreat each year. In Tibetan Buddhism, a person who could benefit the sentient beings with mantras to attain his own accomplishments is called an Ngakpa. When one begins to learn the Shingon Buddhism, he should purify his own oral activities. As long as he scolds others with bad words, or particularly criticizes his Guru, the mantras he recites from the moment on will become ineffective. Some people consider that it does not matter to miss a puja one time. In fact, according to your capabilities, missing the puja one time means that you practice 10 years less. The reason lies in that we have not met these criteria.

During the period of leaning the Exoteric Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recited 49 the Great Compassionate Mantra, 2000 time Noble Name of Namo Great Compassionate Avalokiteshvara, one time Universal Door Chapter, and 49 times Heart Sutra every day. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used to perform meditation for an hour and read the Avatamsaka Sutra during nighttime everyday. None of us are able to do so and even are lazy about attending the pujas. If one who seldom comes to pujas attends them only when he can take some advantages of it. How can the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas bless him? One should learn Buddhism by perseverance uninterruptedly. Attending one single puja could not change everything. Those 40 more attendees who did not attend the puja last week came for the benefit that they had heard of. If one’s learning Buddhism was to be concerned with such practicality, his life would be he is sure to be concerned with such practicality as well, and have many issues in the future.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked for the name lists of disciples in order to prepare chakra wheel amulets for disciples in advance. However, three group leaders did not timely hand over the name lists. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened on this issue: serving the sentient beings is actually serving oneself. Not delivering the name lists in advance, they brought some difficulty to the preparation of chakra wheels. If the number of the chakra wheels prepared was not enough, some disciples would not obtain it, while more chakra wheels would waste of money. Therefore, the three group leaders had to be immediately dismissed from the position of a group leader.

The practice of the mantras against the God of Plague and the White Vajra Healing Mantra by the Wrathful Padmasambhava thatare going to be conducted this time had never been transmitted to the Han people. Nonetheless, knowing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had so many disciples, some very special Rinpoches of our Drikung Kagyu Order particularly transmitted this Dharma to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his disciples’s safely and soundly going through the SARS epidemic. There had been plenty of preparation made for this puja. For example, in this morning, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was practicing the preparatory rituals, while everyone was still sleeping.

After the mantra ritual was perfectly completed, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to give enlightenment: SARS is mainly a contagious disease, not propagated through air. For example, the virus of SARS would enter human body through touching the eyes, the nose, ears etc with hands, which are used to the touching the tap without washing it in advance after washing hands, touching the door knob of the toilet when leaving it, flushing a commode, or pressing the button of an elevator and so on. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thus pointed out the right propagation route even earlier than the medical scientists, and also reminded everyone of taking notice of personal hygienic habits to protect one self.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further pointed out that SAR is less infectious than influenza, but such a spread of the SARS epidemic was due to our mutual killing karma. Many sentient beings suffered from the fear of dying by our killings, so it is the karmic redistribution that we have great fear of this disease this time. Many diseases are originated from the karma of killing. If you are not willing to adopt a vegetarian diet, it would be useless to implore for Buddha and Bodhisattva’s help even in every second. We have no reason to kill these sentient beings. It has been confirmed that SARS was first transmitted from animals to human beings whom were the wild animal butchers in Guangdong province in China. If one continues to eat meat, one that is not infected by SARS this time would get mad cow disease eventually. Many people now have brain problems which the doctors could not find out these causes. In fact, this is because the animals eaten by people have been injected with many hormones, antibiotics and a mess of other things; the meat may still have other bacteria although it has the antibiotics and viruses which could follow the meat to enter into one’s body and then into one’s brain.

Buddha has been persuading all of us not to eat meat so that we could live longer and thus have more time to listen to Buddha dharma. Having a vegetarian diet is not to become ordained. There are two reasons why your parents do not want you to be a vegetarian. First, they are afraid that you become ordained and, second, they are worried that you would not have sufficient nutrition. Buddha has said that whatever we eat will be nutritious as long as we don’t have discriminating thought about them. Hope that SARS happened this time will change the Chinese custom on killing animals and selfish. Many of you have difficulties to adopt the vegetarian food. This is because you thought you have no choice to do it, in order not to be expelled from this Buddhist center.

One time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche met old monk Guang-Qin and was stared by old monk Guang-Qin for one whole minute to give blessings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Thereafter, whenever Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had any meat, he’d vomit. Thus Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche became a vegetarian and then took refuge under Exoteric Buddhism after one year. At the beginning of adopting vegetarian food, there existed a good umber of obstacles. Some friends would make fun of it, commenting, “You must have done a lot of bad things so as to become a vegetarian.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche responded “yes.” Whether with intention or not, people had harmed a great amount of sentient beings and yet dare to admit their evildoings. Our feelings of consuming meat are so unforgettable that we’d search for excuses not to become vegetarians. When you carry out good conducts based on a heart of unceasing virtual deeds, your karmic creditors will forgive you. But if the good conducts were carried out to benefit yourself, you will be interfered by your karmic creditors.

If we keep having meat, there will be not only just the SARS outbreak but also many other problems, even wars. Don’t be afraid that you’ll be considered as freaks or aliens. Any bloodshed or surgery is resulted from our killing beings in the past lives. Buddhas are persuading us to first stop the killing activities and then to cut off the thought of it. We will not be able to develop the merciful compassionate hearts if we still have the thought of killing. To be merciful and compassionate is to offer your happiness to others, and not to bring sorrow to others. If you recite mantras on the one hand and eat meat on the other, it is not learning Buddhism. It is leaning devils’ teachings. It is not the wish of Buddhas for all beings to suffer. Thus, as long as we have sought refuge, we ought to follow what Buddhas had taught us.

Taking refuge means one accepts Buddha’s teachings again but it doesn’t mean Buddha will protect you. It means nothing even you take refuge if you can not accept Buddha’s teaching. In learning Buddhism, if you do not follow the guidance from your guru but adhere to your own ways, it is tuft to change your condition. Because your life after lives’ karma did not dispel so you look dark that is karma-chi. Buddhas and Buddisattvas will help you first if you have calamities but you have to rely on you eventually. It is incorrect that many Buddhist groups let the believers take refuge first, and then ask them to change their eating-meat hobbit gradually. It is not correct. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is aware that the world’s mutual karma is horrible more and more and it is easy to be involved if we can not stop doing evil deeds immediately.

If by condition one receives a chakra wheel amulet, one has to cherish the fortune. By cherishing fortune it is neither to eat all the meals on the table nor to save all money, but do not waste the virtues you got. Regarding today’s puja, it took more than one month since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received the transmission of Dharma text till producing the chakra wheel amulet and the nectar water. It couldn’t be done; If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t posses the power of mantra recitation. It’s not easy to attain. Today you have virtues to obtain this auspicious stuff and have to think about how to repay the gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It’s to act in accordance with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings. Don’t think you have time or you have to wait. The evil retribution would come in this life soon, rather than it happened in several lives apart. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche learns the Buddha-Dharma urgently and immediately, therefore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s fate can be changed right away.

Do not think that everything will be going well just by wearing the chakra wheel amulet. We still have to believe in the Buddhist teachings and also believe that we could achieve them. The reasons why you do not believe in that you can do it is because you thought you have not learned it yet. To learn Buddhism is not so difficult. Just follow the Guru’s teachings and apply it in you daily life completely. That’s what is called “adopt a particular dharma.”  Every guru gives the Buddhist teachings with his experiences. He gives you teachings that you are able to practice. Therefore you definitely could do it to follow guru’s teachings. These disciples who made the mistake doubted if they were able to make it, and therefore, did not follow the instruction of guru and practice it accordingly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to deal with so many things, including holding the ten thousand people Grand Puja in Taoyuan’s dome, without taking any notes, however, would not forget any of them. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not have either distracting thoughts or deluded thoughts, and handle these things with concentrated mind. Since you still forget even the tiny things, you certainly would not be able to handle with such a big thing of life and death affair.

That Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolds the disciples is to help them eliminate their karma. But many disciples are afraid of being scolded. Being a lay practitioner, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche know those problems of lay disciples very well, and, therefore, also knows it is not good to disciples to teach them with amiable manners. At least, by this way, you will not go in the wrong direction for your next life although you might not like it. If you may accept this way of teachings, your much karma can be changed in the future. If you want to change your future, you have to let go your self, dignity, and face-saving. Otherwise, you can not learn and attain the equal compassion for all sentient beings. To learn Buddhism and to repay the kindness is truthfully cherishing your blessings.

June 26, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to conduct the auspicious Chod puja of the Drikung Kagyu Linage. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that Chod, being called the “Dharma of Offering Body” in Han Language, means “Cutting Off” in Tibetan or Sanskrit. To learn Buddhism, it is necessary to practice charity and offering and its main purpose is to eradicate the attachment. We people, who have discriminating thought, cannot abandon everything equally. That is, we arouse our various attachments to all kinds of things according to our own preferences, and, as a result, we have endless afflictions, which make us commit all sorts of bad karma. So the Vajrayana teachings instruct us to equally abandon things we like and don’t like. This body or thoughts we have obtained in this life are resulted from the karma we had committed from the past lives. In fact, people have started to committed karmic deeds since living in mother’s body! Scientists have already proved that a fetus has started to react to outside world since three-month old. Sometimes when the mother has eaten something too cold or said bad words, the fetus in her body may react by moving or kicking. Such behavior indicates the fetus’s responses to the like or dislike of this food or sound. Karma may not necessary be good or bad. As long as there is a thought or action, energy will be initiated and result in reincarnation. Therefore it was stated in the Sutra of The Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva that the human beings on the earth are doing nothing but committing sins when a thought arises or when an idea is generated.

Buddha Shakyamuni had presented a lot of stories to demonstrate the practicing of charity and offering. For example, he gave his body to a female tiger to eat so that it could have milk to feed the little tigers; he cut off his fresh to the eagle, which was chasing the pigeons, to eat; he dug out his eyes, cut his nose or his hands, etc… Only Bodhisattvas of the third ground or higher can be completely free from afflictions. Those who have not achieved such an attainment should start from practicing charity and offering. The most important of all for practicing charity and offering is to abandon completely regardless if it would be appreciated or praised. In order to eliminate the hatred heart of the karmic creditors whom we had hurt, we must devote tremendous sincerity. It is like that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had once acquired skin cancer but he has never seen doctors nor received treatments. Instead, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thought: I would offer my body to my karmic creditors to eat if they want! Yet at the end Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s skin cancer had cured. Therefore, everyone does not need to worry about getting sick or death everyday.

When it comes to the practice of charity and offering, money is not an issue but one should conduct the practice with extremely deep repentance, otherwise it simply won’t work. The deceased we wish to be liberated today must had committed both evil and virtuous deeds in their past. They could not be liberated form the cycle of life and death because of their evil deeds, whereas there is someone came to the puja on their behalf by their virtuous deeds. The Chod puja could help the deceased to be reborn in the upper realms, even in the Pureland of Amitabha. As everyone has different merits, causes, and conditions, there is no need to ask how much help the deceased has received. It takes much more than a couple of days to accumulate one’s merits again. One has to do virtuous deeds continuously and arouse his sincere repentance so as to help those in the intermediate state to be liberated from the ocean of suffergings.

Some pray the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas that he would do a certain number of full prostrations and recite so many times sutra if he could recover from his disease. This is bribery and intimidation, and he had not repented neither does he have the compassion. He was asking Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in how he does to human beings. If one thought that such a thought, as this was correct, his karmic creditors will forgive you.

There are three must requirements to liberate the deceased. They are if the deceased has the opportunities, causes, conditions, and merits for the transference; secondly if the people present in the puja on behalf of the deceased attend the puja with reverence and sincerity, and thirdly if the practitioner who performs the puja has great compassionate power and great merits. After the completion of the puja, there is no need for the attendees to ask how their relatives have been helped, where they would have been, or whether they have been liberated well. If one raises the questions regarding the place his relatives have gone to and the result of their transference, it only shows that he has no reverence and faith in the Guru. As a result, he has no confidence in the practice conducted by the Guru, either. If one doesn’t have faith, the power will vanish. If the one on behalf of the deceased did not attend the puja with a genuine heart to help the deceased and merely tried to avoid being bothered by the deceased, the deceased will feel it and thus does not want to be helped, so he could not be liberated either. Therefore, if one doesn’t have the correct view, his attendance in the puja will be voided. The Buddha Sakyamuni taught us to observe precepts on learning and studying Buddhism. The precept not to speak deceitful words means to teach us not to make up anything that doesn’t exist and not to deny anything that is actually present. Since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to observe this precept as well and thereby all what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche speaks are true words. Additionally, one who doesn’t observe precepts is eligible to perform the practice of Chod.

When conducting a Tantric ritual, the practitioner usually has to wear some protection objects or contemplate, as he himself is the Yidam. However, when performing Chod, the practitioner does not wear any protection object. Moreover, he also sends his Yidam away as to perform Chod with the offering of his own flesh body. When the Chod Dharma instrument is blown, the sentient beings will be summoned. If the practitioner does not have the ability to transfer the consciousness of the sentient beings, they would obstruct the performing the ritual by the practitioner. Though traffic jam everywhere this evening, all of you still could arrive here in time, which means sentient beings who we wish to be liberated help us to come to attend the puja.

Currently, there are very few practitioners able to conduct Chod puja as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Each of you had better cherish the fortune of attending this rare and auspicious puja in the way that you make up your mind to learn Buddhist teachings to benefit sentient beings life after lives. The suffering we are taking results from the evil karma we made in the past, but it is much milder than one millionth of the suffering of the beings we killed. Such various cancers and strange diseases are all result from eating meat. The Buddha has advised to us not to eat meat. If you hope the Buddha to help you, you must listen to the Buddha. It is truly to believe in the Buddha only when one takes the Buddha’s advice first without any doubt. What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche propagates to us has also taken effect on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who truly practices in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings. If the same method does not take effect on you, it is because that you always deliberate the Buddha’s teachings with your own thoughts. Do it first. Nobody could tell when it takes effect, because human has an ever-changing heart.

In order to conduct this puja at seven o’clock, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche departed the office at 5:30, leaving behind Rinpoche’s own meetings and business, just to come to help all sentient beings. Hope that everyone attends the puja with the same attitude and abandon personal interest. If one has a narrow mind, one’s Qi (or air) will not flow through one’s body channels easily; thus one’s leg will suffer from pain when one sits cross-legged.

Chod dharma is a dharma combining the methods in Mahayana and Vajrayana. The part belonging to Mahayana is based on the Large Sutra on Perfect Wisdom. The strength of blessings generated by practicing this dharma is especially strong for a Drikung Kagyu practitioner because the Drikung Kagyu dharma protector Achi achieved her accomplishments with this dharma such that her body turned into lights of rainbow colors and reincarnated in her own Pure Land. It requires a special dharma instrument for practicing the Chod dharma; that is a human’s leg bone. All of you should not think why Tibetan Buddhism must use such a scary human leg bone to conduct the dharma! In fact, it is our relatives and ancestors whom the Chod dharma wants to help and transfer the consciousness. They are all human beings in their past lives. It is the sound blown from a human bone with which they are familiar that can entice them the most to come here to accept the help from Buddha dharma. It is like hearing the calls of the same species. The instrument cannot be made with the leg bone of ordinary people. It requires specific factors and bone shapes. This kind of dharma instrument is very rare. The leg bone dharma instrument used by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been used by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and was given to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. And this represents that the transmission of the Chod dharma of Drikung Kagyu order is now in the body of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In order to accomplish this dharma a practitioner also requires to perform long-term retreats and to do trainings on tantra. There is one difference between Mahayana and the tantra of Vajrayana. The tantra of Vajrayana can use mantra holding to help all sentient beings; but a practitioner needs to accomplish the pure nature first to have strengths in his mantra holding.

Human body can be understood in terms of three different systems. For Chinese medicine, bodily structure comprises of primary and collateral channels and internal organs. For Western medicine, human anatomy includes systems of muscles and bones. Treatments of Western medicine are more likely to be drastic and peremptory, emphasizing strong medication and surgeries. Actually, Chinese medicine once had used surgical procedures. It was recorded that in the Period of Three Kingdoms of Chinese history, Chinese doctors also used surgeries to cure illness. Hua Tuo had scraped off Guan Gong’s bones to remove poisons and also had operated on Cao Cao’s brain. It was till Song Dynasty when Chinese medicine had greatly advanced to discover the fact that an operation on one organ would damage the other. Therefore, doctors of Chinese medicine abandoned surgical methods to treat illness. For Buddhism, human body is the manifestation of karmic effects. Our illness is resulted from our karma. Thus, treating our illness depends on the third system, the Buddhahood or the nature all human beings possess. If the third system is not developed, it’ll be very difficult to practice Buddhism. For instance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been diagnosed with serious scoliosis. For patients of such a severe illness, they should wear iron jacket to walk or lie on their back in bed. How come Rinchen Dorjee Ripoche can sit at the throne, conduct pujas for several hours, and then walk freely after descending from the throne? It is because the third system has been developed so that the ability to control the painful feeling has emerged. This is like that if one’s painful feeling is alleviate or disappeared during his mediation, one’s nature is present for a while although the duration is very short for general people. One has to attain the enlightened nature to make his reciting mantras has power. The dharma instrument made of human leg bone in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s hand has been using once every month and has not been lubricated. But it appears smooth and shiny because there are dharma protectors attached to it. It’s also because both the user and the instrument are to benefit all sentient beings.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the Chod ritual, followed by the dedication prayer. Leading the attendees in reciting the Aspiration Prayer for Rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sang the prayer in person and his compassionate sound was extraordinarily touching. At last, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to meditate and bless the beings, some people started to take back the scripture text. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the enlightenment for this: “The beings are really difficult to be liberated. When you were a student in elementary school, you would not dare to close the book without a teacher’s instruction. But today you thought you are matured and did not listen to the teacher. It is a cause of suffering, that you do not esteem the others.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, on all sentient beings’ behalf, asked everybody again not to eat meat anymore! If one hopes his family free from accidents or suicides, he should eat less meat so to reduce the killings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had learned Taoism from his father since he was a kid, and his mother did not adopt a vegetarian food either. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never asked his mother to learn Buddhism. But now Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother becomes a vegetarian and recites the mantra of Avalokiteshvara from her own initiative.  It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has corrected his deeds and his family would follow him. One’s family would follow him to learn Buddhism if he have accumulated enough virtues. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches his son and daughter in the same way. Machik Labdon, the yidam of Chod, was a female. She got married and had children as the Protector of Dirkung Kagyu Achi Chokyi Drolma. Buddha Dharma is equal to all people. Both male and female can attain accomplishment and the conclusion is the same although their practices might be different. There is a verse in the Chod Prayer to pray not to be female in next life, if you don’t commit evil deeds, have deep faith in the law of cause and effect, and be reverent to the Three Jewels. It is not disadvantage to be a woman. It is more laborious. For example, women have to take the monthly hardship and they would have another hardship when they become old. Also, they are more emotional, so they have more obstacles as well.

Guru could teach the tantra that you want to practice, but you have to repent all the evildoing for all the past lives. Buddha said that there are three kinds of people: firstly, they come to the world again by their wish and have been doing good deeds since they were born; secondly, they made mistakes but they never do the same again. This kind of people will attain buddhahood soon, too; thirdly, they make same mistakes again and again; most people belong to the third category. Many yidams manifest themselves in female form. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche contemplated, as he was a female when performing Chod. It could be changed to a male or a female in next life. Therefore, the males should not look down upon females and females should not hate males. Everybody is equal.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company.

June 28, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and enlightened the dharma of “Path for the Three Types of Individuals” and etc. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first enlightened that originally some more advanced Buddha Dharma were planned to enlighten during today’s puja. However, in these past few days some disciples had made some mistakes so that made Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche feel it was useless to give enlightenment. Just a moment ago, the disciple who is in charge of the dharma affairs of the mandala made the same mistake again that he made in the Japan’s puja. He did pay attention to every single move of guru’s, and, therefore, upon guru’s arrival, guru could not find him when needed because he went away to watch the vehicles while apparently there had been designated people responsible for the safety when vehicles going in and out. In Tibetan Buddhism, The person who serves the guru will not take his eyes away from the guru. Should he continue such bad behaviors, no matter what he practices will be useless and one day he will leave eventually, though he has been near the guru.

Although Buddha’s august powers are boundless and inexhaustible, yet there are threes things cannot be fulfilled: First, Buddha cannot liberate the sentient beings that have no causes and conditions: It is considered no causes and conditions if not listening to Buddha’s words and acting accordingly. Secondly, Buddha cannot liberate all sentient beings to the Pure Land because there are sentient beings that have no causes and conditions. Therefore, it is not able to liberate them all. People like to say: “I know, I understand”. Saying so is considered as arrogant and self-pride. Even Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often politely asks people some questions. Sometimes, H. H. 37th Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang will ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche some questions regarding the Chinese history. If you keep saying, “I know”. This means you do not want to change your behavior. Thirdly, Buddha cannot change sentient beings’ karma: Buddha cannot eradicate our karmic effects. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will save those who have urgent needs but not the one who are in poor. They will help you when you have disasters but helping once is enough. They cannot save you again if you are disobedient. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches you how to do and if you follow, karmic effects will be reduced or the affected time will be shortened.

Last night at the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been seeing and helping believers no stopped from 5:30PM to 8:40PM. Doing so was tremendous toilsome. However, the family members of a disciple, whose eldest sister had acquired cancer and received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Phowa ritual to liberate her to the Pure Land, did not have sympathy for the guru’s exhaustion due to his seeing so many believers. They still took their second elder sister’s two kids on her behalf to implore the help for her who had acquired cancer. In addition, they even asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche why their whole family had acquired cancer. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had enlightened so many times that one must personally see the doctor when sick. Why does he still appoint a representative to ask for Buddhas’ and Bodhisattvas’? Unless one is too sick to move. Not to mention the person has already sought refugee under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and listened to so much Buddha Dharma enlightened by the guru. Any kind of one’s sickness and sorrow in this life is resulted from the bad karma one had done in the past lives. One must pay back his debts on his own. One will not ask should he believe in the guru.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great grandfather earned his living by running a silkworm farm and selling silk. Therefore, all the male descendants of the clan have suffered from heart diseases, hypertension and a short life span of less than 60 years of age from his generation and on. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s second elder sister acquired meningitis at a young age and her intelligence is still a bit lower than that of an average individual. The life of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s younger brother, who developed cavernous hemangioma, was saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s practice. As to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s younger sister, who developed a brain tumor and later underwent a surgical operation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted a practice for her so that she could leave the hospital bed the next day after the surgery. She was discharged from the hospital in seven days and the foreign doctors called her case a miracle. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s eldest sister has been adopting the vegetarian diet for 44 years, ever since their father passed away, and still developed diabetes. On the other hand, although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself had developed hypertension as well as skin cancer, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to practice Buddhism and thereby recovered his health without receiving any medication or chemotherapy. Diseases within a clan are related to the karma of killing committed by its ancestors. Had it not been the mutual karma of killing, these people would not have been born into the same family. Only when one continues to practice Buddhism will there be an opportunity for him to change the karma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often said, “If the Buddhist teachings have proved to be effective for me, it shall work the same way in you.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that we didn’t have faith in the Guru. While faith is the mother of merits and virtues, not a single trace of doubt about the Guru, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas should be generated.

The disciples who implored their minor affairs had no sympathy for the Guru, disregarded the Guru’s body, were selfish and thinking only of their own benefits, did not believe in the law of cause and effect, even came to devastate the Guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche holds weekly regular pujas and monthly Chod pujas and even takes the disciples to holy places and pujas whenever there are opportunities. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche help disciples with all means to accumulate their virtues and merits for their practice on the Buddhist path, nothing can help if you do not practice Buddhism well. There no other Buddhist centers, which might receive much donation from us, are able to host pujas on a weekly basis. It is by the blessing of the lineage founder, Lord Jigten Sumgon, that attendees with proper causes and conditions gather for the puja weekly at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Nevertheless, if one listens to the Buddhist teachings every week but does not practice accordingly, his present life is being wasted.

One of the disciples took her mother, who has diabetes, to an ancient castle in Tainan on a blazing hot day. Upon returning home, her mother appeared to be less energetic, so she thought her mother was possessed by an evil spirit in the ancient castle. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche already said at the conversion ceremony that ghosts will not harm us once we have sought refuge, but the disciple still thought that it was a ghost who possessed her mother. None of us have heard of the Buddhist teachings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as knowing that his mother’s health would not be good this year, flew to Hong Kong to bring her to Taiwan and then to Japan for a rest. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself has been keeping company with his mother, taking constant care of her and even having a look at her during her sleep. Till she recovered health, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then personally took her back to Hong Kong. Another disciple and his mother, who had a heart disease, came to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to express their appreciation for the help received. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that his mother still wouldn’t adopt the vegetarian diet. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could only save her this time and won’t do so next time. If one is unwilling to change and continues to commit evil deeds, even the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not be able to save him. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the disciple’s father to adopt vegetarian food, he actually replied that he would simply have his son do it for him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the reason why the disciple’s father wasn’t scolded was only because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took his age, seventy or eighty, into consideration.

Before the puja, a disciple shared her testimony. Several years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the disciple’s daughter that the disciple would develop cancer in the next 4 or 5 years and had her daughter advise her to learn Buddhism and become a volunteer worker. However, she did not take the advice of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s to learn the Buddhism, and even defamed the Guru and showed a haughty and arrogant attitude, thinking that she would be fine since she had recited 1 million times the Six Syllable Mantra and that she could practice by herself at home. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then said that even His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have to continue reciting the mantras for more than millions times. Later on, as she was diagnosed with breast cancer and lymphoma, she changed her mind and came back to have repented. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still helped her, but the result of what she had committed still manifested. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche promised her to have her cancer pain vanish. Now, the cancer cells have spread and she has been diagnosed with a 4th stage lung cancer. Theoretically, her serious medical conditions should bring about symptoms such as severe breathing difficulties, malignant ascites and great pain which would cause her to stay in bed all the time. However, she can eat, sleep, walk freely, and go to the park to exercise. She was even capable of following Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to Japan to enjoy the Japanese cuisine. The reason why she doesn’t feel the pain lies in the fact that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has liberated the cancer cells in her body. On the contrary, her elder brother eventually still had suffered from the knife-cutting pain all over his body 24 hours a day, although he had undergone chemotherapy and surgical operations.

A cancer patient who receives chemotherapy is actually injected the drugs into body to attach the cancer cells. The drugs , unlike the cancer cells, have no spirituality and could not be transferred by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could not release the cancer patient’s suffering and sorrow It is not appropriate for one to receive chemotherapy and looks for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ help at the same time. To pray to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for help, one has to believe in Buddhas and Bodhisattvas first. If one believes in doctor and is treated with chemotherapy, he also has to make repentance. Some people asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for instruction on whether or not they have to take an operation on their arthritis . Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that: for one who has joint problems, it results from his previous acts of hacking bones. Besides, those who eat pork bone soup, likes to gnaw chicken legs , chicken wings or chicken feet, they must have some problems on their joints.

There is another disciple whose second son was diagnosed as leukemia , having problem in hematopoiesis. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the reason why they had a son with this kind of incurable disease. Besides their ancestor-discredited virtue, it also has something to do with the disciple who had planted evil conditions for his son. In the very year, the disciple held his son in his arms to request Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to re-name the baby for them, but he left with anger after being scolded by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and then he had not attended puja for several years. Originally naming for a baby is a good causes and conditions; however, the act of the disciple planted the evil causes and conditions for his son. On the other hand, one is supposed to ask with great respect the elder and gets permission in advance. Then, one should take the child with a big gift to pay a visit to the elder. For the disciple, he prepared nothing but only brought the child to request for a name without any respect. Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not received the offerings from their family, nor sold the jewelry to them. It was not until the disciple’s wife kept praying earnestly that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to agree to receive the offerings.

Do not think you could have your own thoughts and the master has to accommodate you just because you are rich or have some special skills, like some disciple. Nowadays, the environment for Buddhist learning is not good, and everyone has to be cautious. Do not forget your guru’s teachings and graces even when you face something you have stake in. If one’s ancestor-discredited virtue, one has to repent more and practice the Buddha’s teachings energetically

There was a story depicted in an Exoteric Buddhist biography: in the ancient times, there was one man who deeply believed in Avalokiteshvara and practiced virtuous deeds everyday. At one night, Avalokiteshvara came and told him that: a gang of robbers would come to your home and among the robbers there was a so-and-so who had been killed by you with knife slashes in previous life. He is going to kill you and your family, for when you killed him in previous life, there were some people standing aside, watching and endorsing your act of killing. Therefore, in this life, the karma of going with the evil deeds had made them become your family and have the likely to be killed by the robber. Avalokiteshvara furthermore taught the man that he had to repent to the robber. Several days later, the robbers did come and trussed up the family. The Avalokiteshvara believer asked out if there was a man in the same description as what Avalokiteshvara had said. Then, He found him and then told him the story about their previous life that Avalokiteshvara had told him. Moreover, he told the robber: I now must pay for what I’d owed you. So please kill me with the same number of slashes as I had done to you. Listening to these, the robber’s real nature just emerged, so he slashed the man with the back of a blade in the same number, saying: “What you had owed me was already paid off!” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpcohe enlightened us on the story: “Even Avalokiteshvara could not expel the robber for this man, but only could give him advice on paying off the debt on his own. You always come to request me for blessings, for letting you recover from any kind of disease, for letting everything go as your wishes. I really have no idea how to help you!”

Repent sincerely and be willing to pay your debt, and the creditor may let you repay in another way.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that there were so many disciple who told you their stories before puja started on each Sunday, is in fact they were presenting Buddha Dharma to everyone through telling so many stories of disciples. Do not take them just as stories, thinking you’re self-different from the others and refuse to accept them. As long as we pay less attention, we will easily practice evil deeds. Those who have taken refuge and attended the weekly puja should start to learn and take care of themselves, and then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could have more time and energy to take care of the others who had not been helped with Buddha Dharma. How is the world sorrow? Are you blind or deaf? Don’t you see so many people around you in sorrow? You are merely talking about mercy and compassion, but to what extent you have learned them about? You are only confessing from your mouth after your bad habit is pointed out, but you have not thought through it deeply. Therefore, you will repeat your faults, and I just have no idea how to save you even though I want to do. Those who do not correct their bad habits, especially what have been instructed by his guru, could not practice well. The enlightenments given in puja are all the theory of attaining Buddhahood and could definitely be achieved.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to enlighten about the paths of three kinds of persons taught by Gampopa.

The first is the path for persons of modest motives. These are persons who listen to the dharma enlightened by their guru and are afraid of the sufferings in the three lower realms of reincarnation. So they want to avoid all bad karma and to learn and practice Buddha dharma. Such persons must deeply believe in the laws of cause and effect and practice it truthfully. All of you now do not even have the characteristics of the persons with the modest motives. You just come here to implore for help when you encountered any trouble, but do not believe in the laws of cause and effect at all. We live not for any enjoyment, and had better know that the death is approaching step by step. It is very rare for us to obtain this body and have chances to listen to Buddha dharma. And it is up to us to decide how to change this kind of causes and conditions into good results. Do not care too much about the sufferings in this life. If you have faith, you will not feel pain even if you have cancer.

If one can stop doing evils and do good deeds for one thousand lives without being reborn in the three evil realms of reincarnation, one can attain the accomplishments to be reborn in the human or heaven realm. But because all sentient beings are still under the sufferings of reincarnation in the six realms, there would be no happiness at all for one to enjoy even if one can be reborn in the human or heaven realm. Because of your ignorance, all of you could not see the sufferings in the six realms of reincarnation and thought that these sufferings would not happen to you or that how you would know whether the three evil realms really exist. So you just wait until the time comes. In a three-month retreat in 2007 at Mt. Lapchi, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, with dharma eye, had seen the unspeakable sufferings all sentient beings had in the six realms of reincarnation. When seeing so many sentient beings that were still suffering in the three evil realms and being unable to help them, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cannot help but cry sadly for a few hours.

There is one analogy in the Lotus Sutra. From Buddha’s point of view, you are like a group of children who are playing happily in a burning house and are not willing to leave even when the fire is approaching. Buddha and Bodhisattvas are like the parents who want to rescue their children under the threat of the fire. So Buddha and Bodhisattvas prepare two vehicles (two vehicles representing Mahayana and Hinayana, respectively) that are full of toys outside the burning house, persuade the children to come out and get on the cars as soon as possible to play with the toys, and drive them to a safe place. The wealth, health, reputation and status, marriage, etc. that you like to pursue now are just as those fun toys. It was like giving you toys for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to save you or give you blessings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants you to get on the vehicle of learning Buddhism in order to teach you Buddha dharma and bring you to the safe place on the other side. Now after taking the toys you refused to get on the car and went back to play again in the burning house. Doing this, Buddha and Bodhisattvas will not be able to help you either.

A person of medium motives is a monk or a nun who practices Sravaka (a hearer) or Pratyeka (meditating on twelve links of Dependent Originations). But he/she can only attain the fruit of Arhat and cannot become a Buddha since he/she does not have the heart of helping all sentient beings to liberate from the cycles of birth and death. So this kind of persons is also known as a person for his own enlightenment. Learning Buddhism needs to practice the development stage first. This is for accumulating one’s virtues. If one does not have any virtue, one will not be able to accomplish anything. It still needs virtues even to become a pet. The dependent origination of practicing Buddha dharma is very important. If you practices Buddha dharma for the benefits of all sentient beings, this kind of dependent origination can help you walk long and smoothly on the path of practicing Buddha dharma. If you practice Buddha dharma for your selfishness, then there will be obstacles naturally to prevent you from practicing Buddhism. There was a Buddhist nun who had become religious for 30 years. One year before she passed away, she met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she had been afraid of sleeping since she had feared she would not see and would miss Amitabha Buddha when Amitabha Buddha came to get her during her sleep. It was not until when she received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings and enlightenments, she could then sleep well. This is because she did not learn contemplation with thoughts for the development stage.

At the development stage of the practice, one could not only contemplate the Ydiam but the greedy thoughts and emotions can also be suppressed. One who has completed the development stage can visualize oneself as the Ydiams as well as Bhddhas of five directions. As one has completed this stage, one has developed as an advanced practitioner. Only when one can unite with the Ydiams, can one conduct the puja of empowerment. During one retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw a fire of two-story high flaring outside the room and directly approaching the living quarters of Ani.  Thus, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche contemplated himself as the Yidam of Vajrasattva and the incarnated Yidam went out and stomped on fire. In 20 stomps, the fire was distinguished. Many disciples would visualize Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche when in danger. What they saw was not the same Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in different places. Instead, what they saw was an incarnated Yidam, which meant Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had united with the mercy and compassion of the Yidam. Thus the incarnated Yidam appeared. One who has accomplished the medium stage of arising can perceive all objects and matters as illusions. What the eyes saw was resulted from the origination and extermination of the condition, leaving no attachment to the phenomena.

Followed by the completion stage of the practice, practitioners proceed to cultivate the stages of completion to develop the void of the nature and fundamental wisdom. The practitioners who attain the accomplishment of the completion stage of high level can perceive the truth that the mind is Buddhas. The practitioners who attain that of medium level can perceive that our minds are unborn. As Heart Sutra states that the nature of our minds is of no accruement, diminution, cleanness, nor impurity.

And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the differences between Mahayana Paramita Dharma and Vajrayana. Practitioners of Mahayana practice Buddhism in accordance with Buddhism philosophy and the teachings of Six Paramitas while Practitioners of Vajrayana practice Buddhism from the nature or Buddhahood in accordance with secret oral instructions. The teachings of Paramitas employ life experiences to practice Buddhism, by thinking over the words rather than attaining realization. This way of practicing Buddhism emphasizes logic reasoning and theorizing to confirm their understandings. Explaining words by words, practitioners of this kind of practice are apt to be trapped within literal meaning of words. The more they hear and see the more obstacles they would encounter.

In ancient time, as some object was broken and the sound “dong” emerged and immediately disappeared. Practitioners would attain the realization that conditions originate with the nature of emptiness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also attained the realization that conditions originate with the nature of emptiness as the sound “dong” emerged when he walked in the room of his retreat and kicked a chair’s foot. After that, the pujas conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are especially powerful. For instance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to pierce a hole on a deceased’s skull when conducting Phowa puja thousands kilometers away from the dead. It is the law of arising and ceasing, and, as Diamond Sutra indicates, it is also because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings has transcended the limitations of time and space since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been free from the attachment to the forms of life-span, person, and self.

After having attained enlightenment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to read sutras. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could not help but reading sutras in order to benefit sentient beings. If your Guru does not ask you to think, don’t think. The more you think the more complicated it may turn out. Don’t ask the benefit of doing what your Guru asks. If your Guru asks you to recite mantras, you ought to recite mantras. If your Guru asks you to take on a retreat, go ahead and do it. Follow whatever yours Guru instructs and try your best without taking too much consideration. If you have no opportunities to perform retreats, follow guru’s teaching to recite the mantra of protector A-Chi, mani mantra, and verses of seeking refuge. H. H. Kyabgong Chentsang once said that true practice of Buddhism is not to recite mantras but to correct ourselves.

An object looks like a single entity by its appearance. But being analyzed further inside, it is composed of many atoms and molecules. For example, the internal structure of just a grain of rice is very complex already. One has afflictions because of one’s discriminating mind which distinguishes the difference between one and many. In fact, the amount of an object depends on how one thinks; less can become more and more can also become less. These are the effects of the mind. However, Mahayana Paramita dharma believes in one’s eyes and ears and does not analyze from one’s own mind. Such kind of practices takes a long time to eradicate one’s attachment.

Practitioners of the Shingon True Words sect would not contemplate the forms and appearances, but rather they cut off attachment through practicing in concentration. Esoteric Buddhists realize that the motion of the mind is due to certain energy, and the mind could stay unmoved if the energy is under control. For example, their eyes open when they practice meditation, yet the heart would not be disturbed by the outside world. The meditation methods of the Esoteric True Words Vehicle are also called Mahamudra. Some people consider the Mahamudra as the Soto Zen, sitting in silent meditation, of the Zen School. It’s not appropriate. Generally, Zen practicing is a method to attain concentration by visualizing forms and appearances as emptiness, while the Soto Zen attain concentration by visualizing one’s own mind as void. However, the Mahamudra meditation method is different. To attain concentration, it does not practice in some way as you might wonder that sitting in silence and visualizing the emptiness. Mahamudra is to practice the meditating concentration in every single second.

By esoteric practices, one could fast achieve the attainment depicted by the Heart Sutra. Practicing in accordance with the esoteric mantra, you could realize the death and impermanence and clam your wild mind from habituating in that temporary happiness. At this moment, such attainment could only be elaborated to you by tangible words and you could only experience it through real practices. Imagine that you could have a delicious meal though you have no idea how to make the meal as you like.

Believe firmly in the law of cause and effect, and sufferings of reincarnation. You also need to practice by your own in order to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Never be slacking before you are able to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. In fact, don’t be slacking either even you could do it. Avoid any tiny minor evil in order to prevent any possibility from accumulating bad karma. Do whatever any tiny minor goodness as possible as you could. One who is inattentive usually makes mistakes and is not aware of problems on one’s own. Thus, the heart always changes before achieving certain attainment and therefore we should be guided by the guru. Prior to your accomplishment of esoteric practices, the best methods are to listen and follow the guru’s teachings.

Many people do not esteem their guru and Buddhist masters. If the people decided to leave the Buddhist master, it is nonsense to impute the reason to leave in that because the other people deceived the master. Doing that means to denigrate the master, but why did you convert to the master? Just leave there and keep your voice silent, if the connection towards an end.
