Event Calendar of the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

February 1, 2009

The regular puja was held at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. Followers and believers listened with reverence to the recording of “how to follow the Guru”. That recording recorded what the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened on December 8th, 2002. Once confirmed that the Guru has conformed to the 20 criteria of a virtuous Guru as explained in the methods to examine a Guru, a disciple must follow the Guru full-heartedly, and must not judge Guru’s behavior because a virtuous Guru’s doings are beyond ordinary people’s imagination. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cited his own course of cultivating Buddhism as an example. Whatever taught by his exoteric master or tantric Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche followed exactly without a bit of doubt, and that was why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accomplished the status rapidly.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that learning Buddhism consists in Practical part and Theoretical part. Before we have not start the practice, Guru would explain the attitude of learning Buddhism in detail which is very import to be able to learn trantra or not. All experienced results are due to personal practice in past lives. All sentient beings are equal. Humbleness is the most important and then there is reverence heart. Those who have ego and an arrogant attitude could not learn Dharma. It is not certain that those who want to learn trantra are capable of learnig it. Guru would teach the tantra to those who accumulate virtues by making offering and charity as well as accumulate merits by correct self own deed, and are examined and observed by Guru for a long time. The Guru is thinking every moment that his disciples could be liberated from the birth and death. It is so difficult that the Guru would urge disciples severely. All what the Guru plays, laughs, angers, scolds are Buddhist Dharma. The bad karma is gone at once when being scolded. It will impossible to learn the Dharma without sufficient virtues, therefore, it is must to attend the pujas every week to participate the dharma giving to accumulate virtues. Not only we but also countless sentient beings listen to Buddhist teaching for every puja. The realm of practice that has been attained should be confirmed by the Guru, not by one itself. The practice of Extraordinary four preliminary practices would not work if the heart of the Guru could not be corresponded with, no matter how many times of practice has been done.

About how to follow the Guru from four aspects, including reverence, render, faith, and practice. Following the Guru reverently: It is a must to give prostrations to the Guru. The Guru would give you back his virtues when making prostrations, which also could eliminate the proud and boastful heart, could arise the big revence heart to learn the Dharma with pure and one mind. Besides, you could not sit if the Guru does not let you sit, you should stand up immediately whe the Guru stands up. Be walk one step behind the Guru when walking, and do not step onto the Guru’s shadow. Bend down to walk by when the Guru is sitting, and do not pass by the Guru’s back. Do not eat before the Guru starts eating. One Guru is hard to see and hard to meet. The merit accumulated by meeting a Guru is much greater than seeing 100 Yidam. It is impossible to meet the Guru without virtues. When we meet a Guru, we must hold fast the reverence heart to follow him, and never disobey the Guru’s teaching even giving up your own life. In the year of 1995, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was too poort tto buy a rice box and did not have friends helping Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only remembered Avalokitesvara ever that if we practice dharma Buddha and Bodhisattvas won’t let us lack of clothes to wear, lack of meals to eat, and lack of houses to live. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche practice Dharma firmly according to this saying and believe that Buddha and Bodhisattvas won’t lie us.

Any words from the Guru should be listened and accepted. Believe in Guru firmly and see the Guru as Buddha. All what Guru says is not to benefit himself, instead is to help us liberated from the birth and death. What the Guru says is full of wisdom, very deep and very wide. We should serve the Guru reverently, hold fast to the vow during taking refuge, and never ask for non-Buddhist religions. We should purify our 3 gates (of body, speech, and mind) and regulate our deluded thought to accept the Guru’s teaching, so as to have the supramundane heart. Otherwise, it will be devil things. The difference between the devil and Buddha is Buddha Dharma teach us to learn to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death while the devils want us to attain rebirth in the cycle of reincarnation. To teach doing charity is not Buddha Dharma. Make offering to the Guru with gratitude. Do it based on our own capability with joy. Buddha Dharma teaches us a simple way of it, i.e. making the offering by 1/4 of our income. Buddha Dharma also teaches us we must make the offering to have the virtues. Do not be angry with the Guru, the true virtual deed is to learn Dharma so as to get liberated from the birth and death. Being a good man is the requirement of being a human being. But there are many conditions to learn Dharma, they are to be liberated from birth and death in order to attain the Buddhahood, to lean Repentance Dharmma to reduce the power of Karma and the suffering of death. For example, Mother Teresa who did the virtual deeds all of her life was in sufferings when she was passing away.  It is she did not learn the Buddhist Repetenace Dharma.

Avoid the followed defects: criticize the Guru, make evil friends, and lose faith to three treasures. Some have strong faith in front of the Guru, but forget it immediately when leaving. It is irreverent to ask for the Guru’s help when meeting bad things and forget the Guru when living well, or to make offering when asking for teachings or help. It is must to get rid of the behavior that amuse the new and loathe the old. We should practice, to correct our deeds according to the Guru’s teaching. When we walking on the good way, all of these are due to the Guru’s teachings. Be gratitude to Guru’s immense kindliness and the firm faith will arise naturally. Do not think it is the achievement by our own practice, otherwise we will become ego and an arrogant.

Among the ways to often please the Guru, the most important is to correct our own deed practically according to Guru’s faith and all Guru’s teachings. Cherish the Dharma transmitted by the Guru that are hard to obtain and hard to listen. Pay reverence and faith to the Guru is also receiving the transmission from Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön. Offering of the property, render, and mediation is also making offering. Do not make the offering with the money earned by cheating including gambling or lotto. Serve the Guru without arrogance attitude, and please the Guru with constant practice. Among these 3 offering, the practice the Dharma exactly is the best offering.

February 8, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to conduct lamp offering ritual, and the three-in-one dharma texts, including Amitabha Buddha, Avalokiteshvara and Guru Rinpoche – Padmasambhava. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first enlightened that the lamp offering of Tibetan Buddhism is different from the so-called lightening of Guangming Lamp (Brightness Lamp), and is not to burn up bad things either. It is let the Buddha’s light brighten the entire boundless space. Due to lack of enlightenment, sentient beings needs to be brightened by the Buddha’s light of which is much more brilliant than the sunlight. Within the 49 days right after people pass away, yidam, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would come every 7 days to take the deceased, except for those who were the tremendously craft and wicked persons and committed the deepest and worst faults. The Buddha’s light is very brilliant, and therefore the deceased in intermediate state (or bardo) who do not practice the tantric dharma during their life time would be afraid of it, furthermore move towards to the place in dimmer light, and, as a result, attain reincarnation in the six realms. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever made a dream at the night of taking refuge to Buddhism. In the dream, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stood outside of a temple and the refuge master told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to go inside. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche opened the door, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw the light emitted by Shakyamuni Buddha was so brilliant that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stepped backward. Yet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche heard the refuge master said: “Do not be afraid! Go inside”. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then entered that temple again. Richen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that it was not until after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche experienced the death process by practicing the trantric Phowa Dharma that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realized people in intermediate state are afraid of the Buddha’s light. Had Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not followed the master’s instruction to enter the temple, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not have attained the accomplishment in trantric dharma afterwards. This story also tells us that one will earn benefits if he firmly believes in guru. The appearance of those who ever make lamp offering to Buddha would be brighter and more shining in their next lives. The reason why some look dark and dim is either they did not make offerings in their past lives or their heart to make offering was not correct.

Making lamp offering to Buddha represents to ignite the light with the reverent and grateful heart, praying the light to be together with the Buddha’s light so as not to be afraid of it. The light also represents wisdom, praying to eliminate any obstacle on the Buddhist path, to attain as pure and clean nature as the Buddha light and wisdom, and to be irradiated by the wisdom of Buddha’s light life after lives. When making lamp offering to worship Buddha, pray the sentient beings of the ten directions to learn the Buddha’s wisdom that is just like the lamp shines upon all of the darkness, where we stumble and fall before attaining the enlightenment. Do not do any evil deeds so to receive the irradiation of the Buddha’s light. Even a tiny bit of abandoning or not believing in Guru’s teachings, the light would be extinguished. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wished that today’s lamp offering ritual could make everyone have a brilliant direction to follow and path to walk on, and could have a safe year; especially this year will be a negative year. There will still be many fire accidents and people will be more irritable. Next Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the rituals of lamp offering. Fire of a butter lamp was lighted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and was passed down to light the butter lamps of all attendees’. It represents the light of Buddha was transmitted to mandala first, to His Holiness 37th Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and Drikung Kagyu Lineage, to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, then to all attendees and shines upon all sentient beings thereby. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mercifully and compassionately allowed all of the attendees could take the butter lamp home to continue the lamp offering, and reminded everyone not to stop the fire by blowing the lamp out.

Afterward Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the rituals of Buddha Amitabha Dharma and led the attendees to recite the heart mantra of Buddha Amitabha. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that to initiate the conditions with Buddha is to perform the preliminary practice (taking refuge and rousing motivation), the main practices (make the same vow as Yidam’s), and transference of the merits to others. The vow power of Amitabha Buddha hopes that sentient beings could be liberated from the cycle of reincarnation, and be able to attain the Buddhahood in the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. If the vow we make is as the same as that of Amitabha Buddha, we then could have the chance to attain rebirth in the Pure Land as well as to benefit sentient beings.

Afterward Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the rituals of Avalokiteshvara Dharma and enlightened that the Six-Syllable Mantra of Avalokiteshvara practice is the essence of all mantras. Avalokiteshvara is one of the disciples of Amitabha Buddha as well as his successor. Avalokiteshvara has the causes and conditions with many Tantric Yidams, and that with the sentient beings on the earth is particularly deep and profound. Avalokiteshvara once hear the sounds of the world, responding to all beings prayers and cries for help, relieving and rescuing them from sorrows. Therefore, practicing the Avalokiteshvara Dharma would help us very much. There are development and the completion in the Avalokiteshvara Dharma. It was said in the Buddhist text that Vajradhara would have lied if we had not been able to be liberated by practicing the Avalokiteshvara Dharma in the way of perfecting both development and the completion. That is, we definitely could attain the purification of body, speech, and mind by this practice. Completion is to be practiced by those who are the practitioner with supreme temperament or moderate temperament. Those Buddhist practitioners like us who are with low temperament stars to practice from the development, i.e. taking refuge as well as rousing motivation, stop doing all evils, and doing all goodness. Rousing the motivation correctly and making the vow all deeds are to benefit sentient beings before attaining Buddhahood.

Finally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted ritual of Guru Rinpoche Dharma. Guru Rinpoche is Padmasambhava who was incarnated in a lotus blossom. Guru Rinpoche is a more important Yidam than Buddha Sakyamuni in tantras of Tibetan Buddhism. Guru Rinpoche transmitted Buddhist tantras into Tibet. At the time, Venerable Atisha wanted to build a Buddhist temple, but the construction was obstructed by evil deities and could not be completed. So Guru Rinpoche was invited to come to Tibet and Guru Rinpoche used his great supernatural power to subdue the evil deities and gather them to become Dharma protectors for Buddhism. In addition, he transmitted tantras into Tibet. Guru Rinpoche had predicted that when human beings fly in the air by riding on a machine made of iron, the world will have wars, natural disasters, and epidemics continuously; it will have men without loyalty, women without fidelity, and sons and daughters without filial piety. These are all true reflections of the current society. Guru Rinpoche also had predicted that there would be a Tibetan king who will destroy Buddhist temples, Buddha dharmas, Buddhist sutras, and Buddhist practitioners. So Guru Rinpoche hid many tantra scripts in the air, rocks, cave, and water, for them to be later revealed by Mahasiddha or is handed out by Dharma protectors. These tantras that are called Terma Teachings (rock-transmitted tantras) then could be passed down to later generations.

Guru Rinpoche is very important for tantra practitioners who could not learn tantras if they do not have the causes and conditions with Guru Rinpoche and are not taught and instructed by Guru Rinpoche. Guru Rinpoche was a Yidam with awesome dignity and was very strict in precepts as well as disciplines and ritual practices. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that during the conduction all sentient beings in the six realms have reincarnated as lights and entered into Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s body, and then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been able to help them with the purified body, speech, and mind. All bad karma comes from five kinds of desires continually. If a person can no longer have the mind of greed, hatred, and delusion and accept Buddha’s teachings, he will obtain safety and soundness naturally. If one can have no thoughts, then one can purify oneself and not be obstructed by all sins and karmas. Each of you should not always come and ask for Guru’s protections and blessings. Safety and soundness is gained by cultivating the elimination of Five Poisons, not by praying to Buddha and burning incenses. Do not think that because of Buddha, Bodhisattva, and Guru’s mercy and compassion, one must be able to be forgiven for breaking the precepts after one repents to Guru; it is not good for oneself to break the precepts; it will hamper and block one’s causes and conditions for learning Buddha Dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, when orally transmitting “Fifty Stanzas on the Guru”, had enlightened precisely and clearly that everyone should always review one’s own body, speech, and mind. We should live in accordance with Five Precepts, Ten Meritorious Acts, and the thirty-seven practices of bodhisattvas in our daily life; so as not to let Guru worried.

And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened us by the story of a disciple just passed away. Prior to the disciple’s first seeking refugee under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. She was in extreme pain, and thus beseeched to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. As she met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche severely reprimanded her and she accepted those harsh words. After three consecutive reproaches from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the tumor on her neck began oozing pus and gradually became smaller. Eventually, the tumor disappeared. As a result, she sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After taking refugee under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she said she would like to work as hard as animals for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. But when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave her a real job, she felt the salary was too low and decided not to accept it. Because of only thinking of her own interests and not keeping her promise of repaying Guru’s grace, thus showing the greediness, she instantly used up all her virtues; the negative Karmic effect ensued and her cancer recurred. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that a person with a greedier mind will be reincarnated in the realm of Hungry Ghosts after he passes away. In fact, before she passed away, she had already been showing the appearance of the beings in the realm of Hungry Ghosts with a small head, a thin neck and a convex belly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mercifully as well as compassionately and purposely ignored her for one year. Only when she could sincerely surrender to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, could she accumulate her virtues. In so doing, the karmic effect to enter hell were transformed into cancer and the illness caused her no pains at all. More importantly, the lost hearing from the illness was also recovered before her death so that she was able to hear Buddha Dharma. She and her husband did not have money. But before her death, her offerings were full of authentic repentance and genuine respectfulness. Although the offerings were meager, her virtues were accumulated. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had waited for a whole year to let her accumulate virtues and let her take refuge the second time. After taking refuge again under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she completely surrendered herself and did not beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the cure of the cancer. Consequently, she had sufficient causes and conditions to receive the precious Phowa dharma after her death. Now she is happily in the Pure Land enjoying blessings.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also enlightened that the causes for her cancer was due to her karma of killing in past life and that her father had taken other person’s life-saving money which should not be taken. Although the amount of the money is not large, only a few thousand dollars, but the effect is large enough to pass bad karma to his offspring. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened in addition that her husband (also a disciple) could lay down his love to her; it is already enough. When conducting Phowa dharma for her, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was in Japan and the deceased was in Taipei. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, however, informed her family members the two most worried things on the mind of the deceased while she passed away. The family members certified all these as correct.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further enlightened that the family members of other two disciples could not obtain Phowa dharma because one disciple did not have the heart of offerings, which offered Guru with something not in her desire, and one disciple did not have the heart of repentance. So their relatives could not receive Phowa dharma when passed away. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened us that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings are different from the other Dharma masters’. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has used Buddha Dharma in the daily life. With the above examples, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reminded us not to indulge our desires and do whatever we want. We ought to follow precepts as well as disciplines and try our best to suppress our greed, hatred, and delusion. There will be opportunities to reverse our negative Karma, but our minds cannot change back and forth. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened even Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had agreed to conduct Phowa dharma the deceased might not be able to receive the dharma since when the deceased had not had enough virtues, merits, causes, and conditions, at the moment of reaching Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be in the busiest time and could not conduct the dharma. But when the deceased had had enough virtues, merits, causes, and conditions, at the moment of reaching Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be just in an idle time and could conduct the dharma. This was as the deceased female disciple who had received the Phowa dharma this time, at the moment of reaching Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just finished breakfast in Japan. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also enlightened us that if a Buddhist practitioner accepted a great amount of disciples or insisted on finishing something, there will be Karma showing up before him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had transferred consciousnesses of Dharma masters and the masters of other religions several times. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had visualized many deceased following these Dharma masters and the masters of other religions. It is because these Dharma masters and the masters of other religions could not transfer the deceased so they followed the Dharma masters and the masters of other religions until they got the causes and conditions to be transferred together. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed disciples that one should not treat learning Buddha Dharma as worshiping God to pray for blessings; Buddha Dharma teaches a person to change himself; if one cannot change oneself, then one cannot accomplish Buddha Dharma. If disciples cannot follow their Gurus’ instructions, they will do harms to their Gurus as well.

February 15, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to conduct extremely auspicious “Dorje Phurpa Dharma”. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first enlightened that although Buddhism (Buddha Dharma) has 84,000 kinds of methods these tantric methods can be classified into four categories: cessation, conciliation, enhancement and execution. The method of “cessation”, such as Avalokiteshvara dharma or dharma of transference of consciousness, is to stop disasters, and everyone in general can practice. The method of “enhancement” is to increase wealth or power. The method of “conciliation” is to make an enemy change to have a soft heart and be able to accept Buddha Dharma. The method of “execution” is to kill and not everyone in general can practice the method. It is not possible for one who does not have the ability to perform transference of consciousness to practice. One can practice the method of “execution” only if one has at least learned ten years of Buddhist sutras, has practiced four preliminary practices, and has attained the accomplishment of emptiness’ Bodhicitta. The method of “execution” is to kill those stubborn sentient beings who could not listen to words of mercy first and then be able to transfer their consciousnesses. The practitioners who conduct the methods of execution are usually of Vajra family because the methods of “execution” are difficult to conduct.

Tantric practitioners can be classified into four groups: Buddha group, Lotus group, Dharma protector group, and Vajra group. Among the four groups, the practice of Dharma protector group and Vajra group is particularly hard. The Yidam deities of Vajra group present wrathful appearances; but they are not merciless. There were already Vajra demigods who presented wrathful appearances in a period as early as that of Dun-huang murals. This is just like that Master Dashi of scorched face, emanated by Avalokiteshvara, presented the appearance of a ghost to transfer consciousness of the sentient beings in the realms of ghosts and Hell of fire. Bodhisattva requires four dharmas of attraction to liberate all beings. One of the four dharmas is “working in the same profession” which can also be explained as “being the same species”. As described in “The Universal Door of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva”, Avalokiteshvara will manifest herself to be forms of different beings in order to liberate different types of beings. So Vajra Yidam presents a wrathful form to transfer consciousness of sentient beings with minds of especially strong hatred and stubbornness. This is the meaning of “being the same species”. Conducting the methods of Vajra group can particularly help transferring consciousness of stubborn sentient beings whose karma are heavy because the practitioner’s vajra minds are very strong and their hearts of benefiting all beings will not change and will not turn back. The so-called “turning back” means a Bodhisattva’s mind of benefiting all beings is reduced and gets tired due to the degree of the evilness of the beings; so the Bodhisattva decides to cultivate for himself first. First Ground to Eighth Ground Bodhisattvas all can turn back. One who has not attained accomplishments as a Bodhisattva cannot use the term “turning back” to describe one’s own slackness.

The reasons that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts Dorje Phurpa dharma today are first to help everyone reduce or even eliminate the obstacles of learning Buddha dharma and secondly to help everyone safely pass the really bad year of this year. Third, in March this year Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will lead fifty disciples to perform retreats, and it will be dangerous to rashly perform the retreat if this dharma is not being conducted. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts this dharma to help disciples complete the retreat perfectly. Within the 49 days after a person passed away, there will be one hundred civil and military Yidams showing up every seven days, including peaceful and wrathful yidam deities. If one has not seen these deities when he is alive, the deceased will be very afraid when seeing the awesome and ferocious appearance or hearing the tremendous sounds presented by the wrathful yidams of the Vajra group. One must obtain helps from the Yidam deities of Vajra group in order to practice Vajrayana. The Yidam of Guru Yoga is also from the Vajra group. Before Sakyamuni became a Buddha, a demon woman came to interfere; it was also a Yidam of Vajra group who helped to dispel her. Dorje Phurpa belongs to the methods of execution and is a very awesome and ferocious Yidam with mighty strength and great speed. Because Dorje Phurpa has a pair of wings, Dorje Phurpa comes immediately right after the practitioner prays.

The Dorje Phurpa dharma that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts today was transmitted personally by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At the time, after two months of retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche attained accomplishments of the dharma and was corresponded with the Yidam. When the accomplishment was attained, the Yidam came. Suddenly terrible thunders appeared in a rainless and cloudless sky. The strength of the thunder was hundred thousand times more than that of a regular thunder. The whole retreat room was shaking violently even more than that of an earthquake. When encountering this scenario along in a room, one will be afraid if one does not have a merciful mind and the confidence to one’s Guru. So do not think of wanting to see a Yidam of Vajra group. If one sees a Yidam of Vajra group, one might be scared to death. In 2007, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed a retreat in 4500 meters high Lapchi Mountain for more than three months. In that retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was practicing a Yidam of Vajra Group. Before dinner time of a sunny day, there were suddenly thunders in the sky; an experienced practitioner would realize the coming of a Vajra Yidam upon hearing the sound of the thunder. And then an attendant was just delivering meals and there was a Buddha card of the Yidam from Garchen Rinpoche on the dinner tray. Garchen Rinpoche is one of the great Rinpoches in our Drikung Kagyu lineage. That day on the Lapchi Mountain, when Garchen Rinpoche sent this Buddha card for protecting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s retreat, such mind of Garchen Rinpoche had just arisen and the attendant had not arrived yet, the Vajra Yidam had already arrived one step earlier. When a practitioner attains accomplishment for a Yidam of Vajra group, all Vajra Yidams will all come to protect and bless the practitioner.

Rituals are particularly important for practicing wrath tantra. Through these rituals the heart of sentient beings would be subdued and they could realize their own faults. This Dorje Phurba Dharma is a terma tantra and derives from a clear and pure lineage. The origin of Dorje Phurba dated back to long before the era of Buddha Sakyamuni. There had been 4 Buddhas on earth, and during the period of a Buddha there was a very ferocious demon who harmed many beings and had such enormous power that all Dharma protectors and yidams could not defeat it. Then Vajrasattva manifested exactly the same form as the demon yet larger and stronger to subdue the demon, and hence was called Dorje Phurba afterwards. Therefore, practitioners who practice Vajrasattva would mostly practice Dorja Phurba in a natural way.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then conducted Dorje Phurba Dharma, and instructed all participants that it suffices only to bear reverence to Guru and reverence to this Tantra. While conducting and reciting the mantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave off very low-pitched sound like thunders roaring, and manifested unrivaled forceful look on face with eyebrows rising, eyes popping out, and mouth gaping, which is exactly the same as the wrathful appearance of Dorje Phurba. The sound and face are definitely not human, and clearly revealed all the auspicious signs of corresponding with the yidam. Throughout the entire tantra conducting process, none of the almost 1000 attendees ever walked or talked, and none of the tens of infants cried. The subduing power is incredibly strong. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately gave blessings to all attendees one after another with the phurba, and bestowed upon all with precious nectar and nectar pills.

At last, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reprimanded disciples that only a Guru or Rinpoche is able to master thing regarding Buddha Dharma. Do not do whatever we want. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also particularly enlightened about the importance of retreat. Drikung Kagyu School emphasizes the practice particularly strictly. The learning must be systematic, and the practice as well as the training must be by stages on Buddhist path. There are particularly much more dharma for lay practitioners in Vajrayana because the karma of lay people is much heavier. The practice way of Vajrayana is reciting mantras which must be through the retreat just as it was said in Buddhist Sutra. Reciting mantras at home is distracted reciting by which no merits will be accumulated.

Some people said that Buddha Shakyamuni had never taught tantras before. In fact, tantras were written in scriptures such as Avatamsaka Sutra and Lotus Sutra. However those who have not practiced tantras yet will not distinguish from the trantric paragraphs when they are reading them because they have not attained the corresponding accomplishment yet. What Pure Land school of Buddhism says about attaining rebirth to the Pure Land by reciting Buddha’s name for seven days is to recite it in the way of retreat. Nowadays many of the so-called “Eight Precepts Retreat” are a big gathering of people who attend the assembly in the morning and finish at night then go home. This is only to take part in merriment. The real retreat is for one to be alone in a room so that he will not be distracted. Even like reciting the Six-Syllable Mantra for one million times, it must be practiced by the retreat in order to accumulate the merits and benefit sentient beings. The regular reciting, even with contemplation is a little bit better than that of distracted reciting. During the retreat, it is not allowed to speak. The reciting won’t be counted if there are speaking to oneself, coughing, yawning, sneezing, stretching oneself, leaning his back or lying down, and it must be started over again.

At first His Holiness 37th Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang said mercifully and compassionately that the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center who are going to retreat could leave the retreat room for lunch and dinner at the restaurant as long as they don’t talk. However Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows the disciples’ habitual behaviors very well. When the disciples see each other, even if they do not speak to each other, they will still converse with eyes, lip language, sign language or pass the notes. Therefore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had asked to confine the disciples to the retreat room and His Holiness agreed.

It is said in the dharma texts that the door that leads to the three lower realms will be closed if reciting Six-Syllable Mantra is completed hundred thousand times. There is an opportunity to attain rebirth in the Pure Land if it is completed for four hundred thousand times. One is able to help sentient beings if the reciting is completed for one million times. Of course, the prerequisite is one must attend the retreat with a pure heart. It means one does not attend the retreat for himself, for better health or a peaceful mind, but to liberate himself first then to liberate others. One must make such a great vow to attend the retreat! The more people in a Buddhist Center to have the retreat, the more prosperous that Buddhist Center will be. The so called prosperity does not mean that there are much more people within a Buddhist Center, but is means the wisdom life power to practice Buddha Dharma can be extended and constantly help sentient beings to be liberated from the sufferings of cycle of reincarnation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally selected disciples to practice retreat by lot is to perceive if the conditions between guru and disciple is deep enough or not. Those who do not have sufficient physical strength nor the correct hearts will not be able to recite the mantra naturally.

There is no need to worry about the body condition during the retreat. It is of great virtues if one actually dies during the retreat since he can be liberated to the Pure Land immediately. In addition, his accumulated bad karma can be repaid in this life. There was a nun who passed away during the retreat two years ago. Getting sick during retreat is also to eliminate karma. Actually for the practitioner who has attained accomplishment of merits could pass away in seated meditation at their own will? even they feel illness. There was an old lama of the Drikung Kagyu Order, he died in seated meditation even thought he had suffered the last-stage stomach cancer. One can control his own heart and reduce attachment if he can control his own mental condition. Even one continue to recite Buddha’s name when he dies, he can not subdue the thought of attachment. Therefore it is a must to recite Buddha’s name together with the merits attained through retreats so that the power of mediation could come into being. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that there was a prince who had asked Buddha: “Since you (Buddha) have the great spiritual power, can you please tell me how the stars in the sky were originated? The prince had asked Buddha the same question for 3 times but Buddha did not answer his question at all. The last time Buddha answered him: “Since the question you had asked can not benefit your future life at all, therefore I shall not answer your question. Why I come to this world is to benefit sentient being’s future life.” His Holiness 36th Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang will not answer the questions which are not related to Buddha Dharma either. His Holiness 37th Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang is also very conscientious and careful to the things that are related to Buddha activities. All that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has said and all that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has done are dharma that could benefit us in attaining Buddhahood.

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to conduct the auspicious Chod puja. Before the puja started, one disciple first told all attendants the process of how his late wife,
Cai-Hui Gao, found out that she had acquired nasopharyngeal cancer, received helps from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, passed away, received the Phowa ritual and was liberated  to the Pure Land. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was on the throne and enlightened: Practicing Buddha dharma is neither asking for a peaceful mind nor asking for good health, smooth business, filial piety, wonderful mate, wealth and having kids…but for him to be able to liberate himself then to liberate others and benefit the sentiment beings. Many people thought that the reason why they had received the Phowa ritual was because of their begging or Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had pity on them. Actually this is not true. It is because of causes and conditions as well as merits and virtues. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not sympathize anyone because sympathy means there are something to his behavior that deserves sympathy. If sympathy exists, discriminating heart will exist, too. One is no longer a guru if he has a discriminating heart. Every Buddha and Bodhisattva does not have a discriminating heart. Although it was written in the Buddha Sutra that Buddha had ever travelled and given Dharma teachings to the kings. It was because those kings had the determinations to be liberated from reincarnation. In fact, if one has the determination to be liberated from life and death, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and guru will give him Dharma teachings regardless of his rank or whether he is rich or poor.

Buddha and Bodhisattvas will help the sorrow beings but they must have a heart with repentance. Avalokiteshvara will save any sorrow being when his request is heard. The suffering is resulted from the evil deeds he had done. Any illness or pain to the body is not the true sorrow. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will advise the sentiment beings to practice Buddha Dharma hard. One must practice with his own effort. It is like when one is sick and go to see a doctor, he must take the medicine prescribed by the doctor and follow the instructions then his illness is likely to recover. All kinds of help that we receive from guru’s practices and blessings is to ask our karmic creditors not to collect the debts from us first and give us time to practice Buddha Dharma in order to help them in the future. If we don’t cherish the opportunity and determine to follow and practice guru’s teachings, then those karmic creditors will come to collect the debts we owed right away. Then all bad karma results will appear in front of us. This has nothing to do with whether Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are efficacious or not at all. Even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has liberated all our karmic creditors to the Pure Land, it is like when a room is filled with stinky seafoods such as abalone. The stink will still remain inside the room even the stinky things are taken away. Therefore one must practice on his own in order to change the results of bad karma.

Cai-Hui Gao had received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. When the symptoms of her cancer had disappeared, she said that she wanted to serve as a cow or a horse to repay guru’s gratitude. However when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave her a job as an operator, she did not accept it because she thought the wage was low. It was because she started to have a greedy heart and failed to keep her promise. Therefore she did not have a pious heart of making offering. In fact, doing anything for guru is also making offering to guru. Her heart had turned into that of a hungry ghost and that was why her neck became thinner afterward. It was the appearance of a hungry ghost such that she could not eat anything and would be choked even by drinking water. It was not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not compassionate to forbid her to attend the puja. The reason was to cut off any opportunity for her of falling down into the realm of a hungry ghost. Fortunately her heart of repentance had truly risen before she died, and her Greed, hatred and delusion disappeared. She had made offering with all her last savings. Therefore she accumulated the virtues, and thus could reach Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and obtain Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s conduction of the Phowa ritual immediately after she died.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that the supportive recitation works only the reciting is done by following a guru who has the capability to transfer consciousness. One of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ordained disciples was used to live by supportive recitation. Even though she was very earnest in doing so, yet she did not have the capability to truly help the deceased. Later she had suffered from illness over the entire body and her eyes were nearly blind. It was not until after she had sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that her body started to recover slowly. In order to help the deceased, it is not just to recite Sutra. One must have the power so that he can help the deceased. If not, it is like when someone is drowned in the water. If a person who has never learned to rescue people tries to jump into the water to save that person. It will end up that both of them will be drowned to death. The sensibility of a dead person’s sensory organs is a hundred times stronger than that of a living person. The dead person will know whether or not one has the power to help or not. If one can not help the dead person, this will make the dead person angry and attain rebirth in the three lower realms. The person who does supportive reciting must be responsible, too. Therefore when there is someone passed away, it is better to find a practitioner, who has the power of transferring consciousness, to help the deceased. Or the family of the deceased should recite on their own. Or alternatively asking supportive recitation for free is better than the paid one.

Chod Dharma is usually conducted at night time. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is too busy to schedule one night in February, and hence it is also fine to practice it this afternoon. The beings of ghost realm come out in the afternoon, striving to eat the phlegm the practitioner spit out. Some of them eat excrements and urine, while most of them suffer from being unable to eat what they want to eat. Why is there a practice for practitioner to eat nothing after noon? First, it is not good to do meditation after having dinner. Secondly, if we have something to eat, it is not good to us either that those ghosts with merits who are out in the afternoon wonder around us. The sentient beings in six realms still have the desire of eating, even those in the lowest form of the lowest grade of Pure Land do too. When performing Chod, Guru emanates as what those beings like to eat most to fulfill their desire so that they can accept teaching of Buddha Dharma. It is because eating is the demand in common among the sentient beings of six realms. One of the disciples of great siddha Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche has attained the accomplishment of no eating nor drinking. As a matter of fact, he assimilates nutrients through breathing and skin, in the way of “feed on Zen” as depicted in Buddhist sutras. Even the heavenly beings have to assimilate energy in the universe.

There are three important dharma instruments to practice Chod: the first is the instrument made of a human tibia bone, bestowed on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche by His Holiness; the second is a bell; and the third is a drum. The bell is as the hanging bell. The sound of bell reaches the brain through ears to help our dimming heart to raise our sensitivity for learning Buddhism. The sound of drum reaches the mind through ears to calm down our undulating heart.

Following that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to conduct the very auspicious Chod of Drikung Kagyu lineage. On perfect completion of Chod dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that this year is not a peaceful year. There will be many occurrences of fires, volcanic eruption, and human minds are fiery. Moreover, recently airplanes encountered air turbulence pretty often. Such a change of weather indicates that beings are in disorder from the viewpoints of Buddha dharma. Also many areas will suffer droughts. While performing Chod, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw a horrible scene that many beings coming to the venue and were striving for food.

Being in the cycle of reincarnation is caused by greed, anger, and ignorance. The antidote to the greed is doing charity and making offering; the antidote to anger is the dharma of mercy and compassion; the antidote to ignorance is to listen to Buddhist teaching more often. Those who could attain rebirth in the Pure Land are the virtuous men or women at least. First of all is to practice Ten Virtuous Deeds, which was not invented by Buddha. Buddha told us that because it is the conditions that a sentient being must possess to be a human being. All precepts are not used as the criteria for punishment or reward. Instead, they are the disciplines for us to follow in our daily life. In early stage, all Buddha’s disciples are of Arhat position, so disciplines are not needed. Later on, there are more and more disciples with all possible temperaments, and thus Buddha started teaching precepts.

The first one of the Ten Virtuous Deeds is not killing. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reminded those who have not taken refuge yet must become vegetarians. Otherwise, they won’t accumulate the virtues by attending the pujas. Especially eating meat of sentient beings nowadays that feel strong anger will make us worse. The reason why we feel pain in feet in cross-legged sitting posture is also due to eating meat. It was not heard that the feet would be broken or lame after the pujas. There will be reverence to Buddha Dharma if we sit with our feet raised or moving, no reverence means no making offering, no making offering means no virtues, and it means attending pujas is in vain.

Besides eating meat, another problem that many people have is owing others the promise that they did not compete. Some has learned Buddhism for many years but suffered from Alzheimer’s disease before they die. It is not to manifest the illness, but means that they are not able to recite Buddha name any more nor think the Buddhism over. Some thought it is good to pass away without any perception such as dying of heart failure or in a coma, but it is misunderstood. Instead, the deceased’s mind is not pure to control his own direction.

As recorded in Buddhist Sutras, Buddha asked Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva and Avalokiteśvara to take care the people on the earth because there will no other Buddha present till the rise of Maitreya Buddha. Therefore, those who claim themselves as Buddha are fake. The Buddhist text and mantras on the prayer flags of the Tibetan Buddhism to benefit sentient beings are given blessings by conducting rituals and reciting mantras from the practitioners who attaining mercy and compassion of void of nature. Those prayer flags that are just hung by ordinary masters do not work.

When someone asked for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always asked him, “What is the matter?” In fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already known what this person wanted to ask but wanted this person to say it by himself, and it would tell whether he had a heart of repentance, whether he had a mind of reverence, and whether he somewhat realized what he had done in the past. It thus could find out whether this person had deeper Causes and Conditions with Buddhism. Buddha Sakyamuni once presented that there was a woman who did not have conditions with Buddha in past lives and would not have conditions with Buddha in future lives as well. And although Buddha walked in front of her, she still did not look at Buddha. It is the condition that everyone could come to attend today’s puja. However, it really depends on oneself to continue this good Condition.

Finally, for the upcoming retreat event of leading disciples to India in March, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche specifically enlightened that some of those disciples who could go to the retreat practice have already completed the practices of one hundred thousand times of making full prostration, one hundred thousand times of reciting 100-syllable Mantra, and one hundred thousand times of offering Mandala among the four “Preliminary Practices”, and others have practiced the four “Preliminary Practices” and also have attended the Winter Teachings on the teaching and pith instructions of the Chagchen Gangama (Mahamudra of Ganges) in India last November. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first chose some among all the qualified disciples. And then the others are selected by drawing lots on the scene in last week’s puja by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas via Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s hand. This means that each of these drawing-picked disciples all has a one-hundred percent determined mind wanting to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further enlightened many retreat-related matters that require attentions. A disciple must not think that attending the retreat makes him different from the other disciples. According to the retreat discipline, it begins, i.e. entering the retreat room, after lunch and ends, leaving the retreat room, in the morning; this represents it is from darkness to brightness. There will be four to six sessions for daily practice. Every session lasts two hours. Leaving the seated cushion is prohibited when reciting a full round of a string of Buddha beads (108 times of Mantra) is not completed. Actually, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s accomplishment realm, would not leave the seated cushion even if the cushion were on fire. During the retreat, the disciplines include no bathing, no hair washing, no shaving or cutting hair, no cutting fingernails or toenails, no applying soap or scented lotion, no looking out of the windows, no communicating with the outside world (passing strips of paper, knocking on wall connecting to other rooms), and no talking. If one carelessly speak to himself, one should immediately recite “100 syllable Mantra” for repentance. If there are coughing, sneezing, yawning, and hiccups in the middle of holding mantra, one has to count back fifteen Buddha beads in order to continue reciting. No other dharma text can be brought into the retreat room other than the ritual books of four-armed Avalokitesvara and Achi dharma protector, to adopt one particular dharma practice.

It is very important during the retreat to learn and be used to solitude, because a person must go alone when he passes away. There is usually too much outside interference; one can only attain solitude while having retreat. Once a person enters the retreat room, he should regard himself as having already left the world. And all other matters all have nothing to do with him. And he can only rely on Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the Guru. One should contemplate the Yidam twenty-four hours a day, and make no exception even when going to toilet. If any filthy or obscene ideas coming out of one’s mind during the mantra holding, one should leave them alone and continue reciting the mantras. We need to use the act of mantra holding to suppress our bad thinking. The speed of reciting mantras should not be too fast or too slow. It is necessary to clearly read the syllables one by one, like one of a string of beads. Performing retreat is very important for both learning Mahamudra and Tantras in the future.
