At the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche lit lamps as an offering to the Buddha, and then ascended the Dharma throne to preside over the auspicious puja of the Three Wrathful Yidams and bestow precious teachings upon all of the attendees.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday I will perform the Three-In-One Puja of Vajrapani. Vajrapani is the wrathful yidam of Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta, and in Exoteric Buddhism, this yidam is not practiced. The Trinity of the Western Paradise in Exoteric Buddhism refers to Amitabha, Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, and in Esoteric Buddhism, the Trinity includes Amitabha, the peaceful yidam of Avalokitesvara and the wrathful yidam of Vajrapani. The performance of this puja is to let you form affinities with Vajrapani so that your chances to be reborn in the Pure Land will increase. There will be no empowerment today, only the Dharma performance, for the reason that none of you would really want to learn Buddhism.<\/p>\n
Many people criticize and wonder why there are so many yidams with wrathful appearances in Esoteric Buddhism. It is because of sentient beings\u2019 stubbornness, which makes it difficult for peaceful yidams to help them, that wrathful yidams are needed. Let\u2019s talk about a simple example. When children do not listen or do wrong things their parents would usually advise them gently at the beginning, but if the kids still do not obey, wouldn\u2019t the parents show them an angry look so that they would then listen and know they are wrong? It is the same situation here, especially for those who have heavy karma and been reincarnated in the Six Realms. They need yidams with wrathful appearances to counter and help them. These yidams would subdue sentient beings having more hatred in their hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n

While chanting the yidam\u2019s mantra, Rinpoche showed a mighty look. His eyebrows were raised upright with eyes wide open in sharpness and vigor, and totally without blinking. His eyeballs were protruded and lips drawn back; his face was changed to a square-like shape; his chest was full and cheeks bulging. The guru looked exactly the same as the one depicted in a Vajrapani thangka. He was attuned with the yidam for his appearance was manifested as that of a wrathful vajra. This was auspicious and incredible; it was an act beyond ordinary persons. The Buddhist Center was full, but under Rinpoche\u2019s great, compassionate and all-embracing
\npower, all the participants kept their mind alert and concentrated. Although there were many children in the venue, they didn\u2019t randomly move about to make noises. The scene was very solemn.<\/p>\n
Rinpoche compassionately bestowed the participants two opportunities to say the names of people they wanted to help, and then he performed the Dharma. After it was completed, Rinpoche continued the teachings. \u201cThis yidam can counter and handle the harms caused by deity gods (the so-called kings and lords in Taiwanese folklore), dragon kings, demons, mountain goblins, one-legged ghosts and stars of constellations. It can counter and shield all the harm done by devas, nagas and others of eight groups of non-humans.\u201d<\/p>\n
Upon the perfect completion of the puja, Rinpoche led the attendees in the Dharma
