353: It Is Difficult to Repay My Benevolent Guru for Saving My Life!

“After taking refuge in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I was fortunate enough to be able to accompany the guru on a trip to India. During our second night there, I dreamed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was holding his palm to my neck and bestowing blessings. After quite a while of this, the guru began to rise up into the air. As I saw that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was about to leave me, I unthinkingly grabbed at the guru’s feet. Holding on tight, I sobbed, ‘Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, you mustn’t leave. What would I ever do without you?’ The guru very kindly patted me on the back to comfort me, but then disappeared into the mists of dream. I awoke and quickly told my roommate about it, and she exclaimed over and over how wondrous it was. After a time, the two of us gradually fell back asleep.

“On the third day of the trip, while excitedly boarding the tour bus in anticipation of the day’s itinerary, I suddenly recalled what had happened in my dream the previous night. I told the Dharma brother sitting in the seat in front of me about it, and she asked me whether anything to do with my neck had changed. With a start, I quickly rubbed at my neck in an effort to feel the seven sarcomas I had growing there (and in the past, I had heard my father tell about how my paternal grandmother and aunt had both passed away as a result of their necks being full of these sorts of tumors; my aunt had died quite young, too). Try as I might, though, I could not feel the sarcomas at all; they had disappeared without a trace—and to this day, they have never come back! I was utterly shocked and amazed, and truly grateful!

“At the airport in India, while waiting in line to go through customs on our way back to Taiwan, I noticed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was wearing the exact same trousers and shoes that he had been wearing in my dream. My guess is that the guru knew that I am a very stubborn person who is very skeptical of others, so he chose to show me that vision so that I would understand the auspiciousness of Buddhism. Afterward, Dharma Brother Wei told me that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said my sarcomas were a manifestation of the karmic retribution owed to me from having enjoyed eating chicken feet in the past. Now this karmic retribution had been over.

After Chen Minfen accompanied Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on a pilgrimage to India, the seven sarcomas growing in her neck mysteriously vanished.

“Two years later, I brought a friend to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center one day to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. As soon as we walked through the door, I saw the guru frown as he began chanting a mantra. I wondered whom the guru was bestowing blessings upon. When I looked around the room, however, I realized that my friend and I were the only ones nearby; the other Dharma brothers and believers were all gathered a short distance from us. Suddenly I thought to myself, Is the guru chanting blessings for me?!

“Three days later, I asked for a leave from work around noon. My plan had been to rest until 1:30 and then leave the office, but at 1:20 my mobile rang. It was the wrong number. Okay, I thought to myself, I’ll just leave a bit early. As I went down to get my car in the underground parking lot beneath my company’s building, I was thinking that I would just follow the steps I had thought through that morning on opening and shutting the gate (because my company’s garage uses an older model of remote-control gate that requires you to get out of the car and push a button to open or close it; so, out of laziness, I thought as long as I drove up as close to the control panel as possible I wouldn’t have to leave my vehicle). As I nudged my car closer to the gate and pressed the remote-control button to raise it, the unthinkable happened! My car went about twenty centimeters forward and suddenly got stuck. No matter how hard I gunned the engine, the car wouldn’t move forward or backward. By then the roller door was gradually coming back down, but I could not reach the remote control. In my panicked state I could not even undo my seatbelt in time, so I honked over and over in an effort to get help from the betel nut vendor across from me. Despite being only a meter away, the person over there did not hear my car horn. Suddenly, all was quiet, but I was in luck, because right then the postman came around to deliver the mail. When he saw my predicament (through the glass door next to my company’s garage door), he buzzed the intercom button to tell the company secretary to hurry down to help. Not realizing how dire my situation was, she took her time coming downstairs. Seeing her, the postman waved her over quickly, and only then did she understand that it was urgent; she then hurriedly pressed the remote control button to stop the roller gate. By then the three of us were all quite frightened, and fell silent for a moment. When I recovered my wits, I asked the young woman where the roller gate had come down. She told me that it had come down on top of my car. Strangely enough, after the gate had been raised back up, I just lightly pressed the accelerator and my car moved forward without a problem.

“I recalled how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been chanting mantras and bestowing blessings at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center three days previously. It therefore dawned on me why there was that person who had dialed the wrong number and woken me up from my rest earlier than planned; I had also been lucky that the postman had arrived right when he did—just in time to call for help, thereby saving me from the disaster. All of this was thanks to the blessings and protection of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!

“In May of 2007, at His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s behest, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche journeyed to Nepal to perform a three-month retreat at the very site of the Venerable Milarepa’s practice. I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in the send-off team that accompanied His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to Nepal to wish the guru well during his retreat. A few days before we set out, in my excitement, I accidentally fell and fractured a bone. I thought to myself, I want to send the guru off no matter what it takes. After inquiring as to whether my injury would cause an inconvenience to the travel agency, a Dharma brother said to me, ‘It depends on whether or not you have faith in our guru.’

“On April 26th, 2007, we set out, with me wearing a very heavy flexible cast. When we got to the airport in Nepal, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was already there, standing in the main lobby, bestowing blessings upon us one by one. It was so moving! Everyone was very tired, because we’d had to wait all night to change plane at the Hong Kong airport; nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was standing there, tirelessly blessing us unworthy disciples.

In 2007, at His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s behest, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche journeyed to Nepal to perform a three-month retreat. The disciples were fortunate enough to be able to send him off.

“The following evening, we were lucky enough to be able to eat dinner with His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After we finished eating, the guru called me over and told me to rest my foot on a chair. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took the vajra and touched it to the most painful part of my foot, and commenced to bestow blessings for a long time (My goodness! The guru is so amazing! My foot was completely wrapped up in a cast, so unless I were to say where it hurt the most, no one would be able to see what part was in worst shape!). When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had finished bestowing blessings, he blew a few breaths of air onto my foot.

“When I went to bed that evening, I took the cast off as always (because my foot had swollen so much, the doctor had been unable to use a fixed cast and instead had had to use one-sided plaster and then wrap it with gauze; it was extremely unwieldy!). I carefully propped my foot up in a good position and fell sound asleep. When I woke up the next morning, I opened my eyes in a fright and thought, Oh no! During the night, I had slept so soundly that I had forgotten to re-adjust my foot according to my sleeping posture. I realized that my foot might have suffered a secondary fracture! Hurriedly, I peeled back the sheets to have a look, and was shocked at what I saw. That foot of mine, which the night before had been aching with pain and swelling like a rising loaf of bread dough had somehow shrunk down like a flat, dry string bean and was no longer swollen! Furthermore, the pain was almost gone! The Dharma brother sleeping in next bed over was so moved that she praised the guru over and over. Her eyes brimming with tears, she said, ‘Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is so compassionate!’

“Until then, while sitting in my wheelchair, I’d had to lift my foot forward whenever I went over the smallest bump or doorstep, because the pain from being jolted had been excruciating. After that morning, though, it did not hurt at all. Moreover, my foot ended up healing quite well. I really do not know how to thank His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Chen Minfen is endlessly grateful for being so compassionately saved by the guru!

“His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tells us, ‘You should always be close to your guru. Only then can your guru help you in a timely manner, should you encounter any problems.’ Our guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, is constantly giving of his own good fortune to us to prevent us from mishaps and disasters; he cares for us always, like a father. We could never repay the debt of gratitude we owe Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, even after many lifetimes!”
