097: Praise the merits and virtues of the Vajra Guru

My name is Wu Hui-ping. From October 21st, 2001 till today, it has been over seven years since I took refugee under Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

On December 31st 2007, I started to go into labor pains and therefore checked into Taipei Zhongshan Hospital and awaited birth of my third child. However, this time things did not go as planned.

I was in labor all the way until the morning of January 1st 2008, yet still was unable to give birth. The doctor said that I had been in labor for too long and a natural birth was no longer an option; he suggested I once again under go caesarean section (both of my other children were born by caesarean section). I agreed and my daughter, Wei Wen-juan, was finally born at 8:00am without further incident. However, come afternoon, the nurse noticed that I was bleeding heavily. The situation soon became critical. The initial diagnosis was that a uterine agony—failure of the uterus to contract normally—was causing a postpartum hemorrhage. The nurse notified my family that I would most likely have to undergo surgery once again. Doctor Yang asked me if I had notified Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Once aware of the situation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started reciting mantras to bless me. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also added that if it was impossible to save my uterus, then I should follow my doctors’ suggestions.

I entered the operation room again. When the doctors at Zhongshan opened me up, they discovered that the bleeding was fierce, so much so that they could not find the blood vessel to stop the bleeding. Continuing to bleed profusely, I eventually went into shock. At this time the lead surgeon called my husband into the operating room. He explained the situation and asked him if he would consent to the removal of my uterus. Seeing the severity of the situation, my husband agreed to the procedure. Following another four to five hours of operation, I eventually was saved.

The following day I came to. My body, however, was still extremely weak and uncomfortable. The nurse told me what had transpired the night before. She said that the fact that I was–literally– snatched from the jaws of death was truly an act of finding fortune within calamity. At that time my first thought was one of deep gratitude for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings.

After a week’s recuperation, the doctor said I could go home in a few more days. However, the day before I was to be released, Doctor Yang discovered that my kidney was dilated. He arranged for me to undergo a renal ultrasound; the results showed that I had an acute renal failure. I was told that I would have to remain at the hospital so they could deal with the problem. At the earliest I could leave within two weeks, though it could be as long as a month. The news left me greatly disappointed and apprehensive.

Upon hearing the news, my father, mother and husband, Wei Li-lun, helped me leave the hospital. They took me to the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinpoche compassionately told my father that due to the fact that my father owned a restaurant and had killed innumerable sentient beings in its operation, our karma was heavy and today’s events were the effect of that karma. My father, upon hearing the words of Vajra guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, broke down in tears. Giving rise to a heart of repentance, my father then implored Rinpoche to help us disciples.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also enlightened me that it’s due to the fact I ate a lot of clams and I had never developed a heart of repentance and never once thought of the debt that I owed to all sentient beings, although I had been practicing Buddhist teachings for many years. Today’s events, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, were a big step in paying that debt back. He then chanted a mantra to bless me and help those sentient beings. Back at the hospital, I continuality reflected on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment. I told myself that because I had never followed Richen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings and lacked a heart of repentance, consequently I was suffering from this disease today. Thinking this through and then giving deep thanks for Vajra guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche life-saving kindness, my heart and body felt much more at peace. During those two weeks I spent in the hospital my doctor would often come visit me. He knew that Vajra guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was a remarkable practitioner; he also knew that my life was saved thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate blessings. Doctor Yang once told me, “Hui-ping, your recovery is a miracle that cannot be explained by science.”

I told him once again that it was all due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate blessings

On January 22nd I was finally discharged from the hospital. As I was leaving, the doctor told me that I would need to return to the hospital for a check-up after Chinese New Year.

After returning home from the hospital, I attended several pujas, including one held on the first day of the Lunar New Year. After Chinese New Year was over, I returned to Zhongshan Hospital for a post-operation check up. Looking at my blood test results, the doctor said, “You have recovered incredibility fast! Except for a slight blood anemia, all your test results are within a normal, healthy range.” Hearing his words, I immediately once again gave thanks to Vajra guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Without Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s power to lean on, none of this would have been possible. As disciples we need to, at all times, remind ourselves to give thanks for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. If we had not accumulated appropriate causes and conditions in our past lives, taking refugee under such a remarkable practitioner would simply not be possible. As disciples, we need to continually praise our Vajra guru’s virtues and merits, inscribe Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings in our heart and put Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Buddhist teachings in out daily lives; thereby giving those around us a chance to receive Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help when they need it.
