082: The Great Blessings of the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche Sheltered Our Whole Family
Date of Taking Refuge: Jan 11, 2003
In August 2002, my uncle–in-law was on the brink of death because of lymphocytic leukemia. Through dharma brother De Lan’s introduction, we not only met the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but also received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings given to my uncle-in-law who lay in Veterans General Hospital. The first time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche met my uncle–in-law to bless him (Rinpoche had never met my uncle-in-law before), Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked my uncle-in-law “What is your occupation? I saw you sweeping off leaves. When you were burning leaves, you burned many sentient beings on the leaves, thus leading you to this evil karma which you are suffering now.” (Due to injections of anti-cancer drugs, my uncle-in-law broke out into a rash, which ran throughout his whole body. The rash made him feel terribly itchy, as if ants were creeping over his whole body.) I was astonished at how precisely Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche connected my uncle-in-law’s suffering to his past deeds. Two hours after Rinpoche left, my aunt told me that the rash on my uncle-in-law’s legs had greatly receded. Three months later, my uncle-in-law underwent bone marrow transplant surgery. The pain that my uncle-in-law suffered during the surgery was much lighter than the others undergoing the same process. Finally, my uncle-in-law’s sickness was brought under control and he is now living a good and healthy life. I feel deep appreciation for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings.
After this event, I had developed deeper respect of and understanding for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At that time, I requested an audio recording of the “Teaching of Confession” and listened to the recording again and again. After listening to the tape seven or eight times, I started to slowly understand what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was saying. I frequently pondered over Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s words: when you think a person is wrong, you, yourself, are wrong by having such thought.
My husband had sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in November 2002. With his and Ms. De Lan’s encouragement and advice, I took refuge at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center of Drikung Kagyu Lineage in January 2003. After taking refuge, I became a vegetarian. While my husband was a strict vegan, after discussing it with him, we decided to start from being ova-vegetarian (eat eggs and dairy products) and change to a vegan diet gradually.
With our encouragement our child followed in our footsteps and also became a vegetarian. Later, in July of 2003, he took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and our whole family started attending pujas and listening to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings together. Our child became more considerate to his parents, whereas, I, who used to get angry at my child’s poor performance in school, now seldom got angry anymore over the issue. Overall, the atmosphere in our family had become more peaceful.
Every day after work, I often felt so exhausted physically and mentally that I would lay down on the sofa and asked my husband to give me a glass of water, and my child to help with the household chores. If my husband and my kid did not immediately consent to my demands, I would get angry and complain that my husband was not considerate and my child not obedient. One day, however, I suddenly realized that my husband also felt exhausted after his work and my child studied very hard at school. I asked myself why I could not be more considerate to them and finish certain things by myself. Thereafter, I had a change of heart.
My father was already 72 years old. Because of his frailty, one day he fell down in his bathroom and fractured a lumbar vertebra. My father was in so much pain that he could not even get out of bed. Later, he was sent to the Tri-Service General Hospital for an exam of his fracture. The doctor said that my father needed an emergency surgery or the lower half part of his body would be paralyzed. The doctor also mentioned that the only reason for this kind of vertebra fracture was that cancer cells had metastasized to the vertebra. However, in the examination, cancer was not detected.
The night before the surgery the radiologist found that there was a pustule near the area that would undergo surgery. As a result, instead of the surgery, the doctor had to conduct CT scan, pump out the pus to develop bacteria for tests, and apply a therapy to reduce inflammation. The doctor said it might take three months to treat the pustule, and only after could the surgery be preformed. Although my father suffered extreme pain and could not accept this outcome, the only thing he could do was to follow the instructions of doctor, return home, and take antibiotics. (At that time the doctor could not find out what kind of bacteria was causing the pustule.)
Because my father lay in his bed for long time, his suffered from eczema on his back. To prevent the eczema from getting worse, he had to get out of bed and walk a little. After walking like this for a bit, he then could walk up and down stairs without too much pain. After one month, my father could walk outside, and when he finally returned to the hospital to see the doctor, he could walk before the doctor without feeling fierce pain. The doctor said that it was incredible and that a major surgery or setting up steel nails was not required. During the surgery, the doctor ground up bone cement to hold the two segments of lumbar vertebra separate in order to prevent the nerve from being pressed, thus relieving pain and helping with the paralysis of my father’s lower body.
Now my father can ride his electronic scooter to visit friends and take care of day to day matters by himself; he can ride a bicycle to the park near our home and stroll in the park; he even traveled overseas to Japan.
All these miracles are due to kind blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not only takes care of his disciples but also disciples’ family. The approach Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche uses to take care of his disciples and their family is the best, kindest, most painless, and most perfect one. My immense gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!
When I listened to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings and saw Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s efforts to preach and spread Buddha Dharma, I felt that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not care for his own life or money, but cared about sentient beings. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were not the Bodhisattva, how could he have such a kind of compassionate heart? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to Jangchubling Monastery in Dehra Dun, India (a very remote place) to conduct a retreat. His only purpose for the retreat was to benefit all sentient beings rather than his own good. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is truly a living Bodhisattva.
I must follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and practice Buddhism very hard. It is really my good fortune to take refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche—such a grand, selfless Buddhist practitioner who is always keeping all sentient beings in mind.
Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche possesses the true knowledge and view of Buddhism. His whole heart strives for Buddhism and sentient beings. I will follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche faithfully, adhere to our lineage, and practice Buddhism with my best efforts.
