077: Willing to Exchange This Limited Life for the Limitless Buddha Dharma

One day in 2007, I suddenly thought of my senior colleague, Dr. Hsiu-Pei Tsai, whom I knew from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. As we both worked in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, she and I came to know each other and one day she extended me a sincere invitation to accompany her to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Although that thought was rooted deep in my heart; however, due to volume of Dr. Tsai’s clinical duties, as well as my unripe causes and conditions, we were not able to make the visit even after scheduling several appointments.

It was in May 2007 that I discovered a serious allergy to meat and eggs was the reason behind a recurring condition known as vasculitis, which had failed to respond to Chinese or Western treatments; therefore, I changed my eating habits and became a vegetarian. One day, the idea of making a personal visit to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche suddenly popped into my head. This time, however, I did not ask Dr. Tsai if she had time to accompany me or not. I called Dr. Tsai for the address and went alone to the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company, which is located on Yi-Hsien road. The first time I saw the words “Glorious Jewel”, I felt the name was very old and had a strong sense of déjà vu. Although it has taken several times, the cause and condition was finally ripe enough for me to witness Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche giving an enlightened discourse to his believers. It was at that time that I heard the words that changed my life: “The Buddha dharma is filial piety.” These words impressed me deeply and, all at once, I believed that filial piety as well as the Buddha dharma are two of the most important things in a person’s life. At that moment I told myself that if I wanted to lead a life without regrets, the only necessary conditions were to study the Buddha dharma and show filial piety. Since then I have verified that every word and every sentence spoken by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are not only universal truths, but also words of wisdom that I need to hear in this life. When meeting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the first time, my thoughts were empty; as a result, I have been able to accommodate and embrace every discourse given by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and from 2007, attending the pujas to listen to the Buddha dharma every Sunday afternoon has become the main focus of my life.

On January 6, 2008, I formally sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. A new life thus started for me. I slowly began to understand how to cherish and appreciate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as well as learning how to apply the Buddhist doctrine—as given by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche—in my daily life. I told myself that without Buddha dharma there is no value or meaning in my existence. I am so blessed to be a disciple of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche—regret no longer has any place in my life. Even though at the age of 34 I still have much to experience, yet what is important is that I no longer have regrets; all because I have met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche—the most precious jewel in this world.

In the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, sentient beings can see a compassionate, genuine, and worthwhile Buddhist doctrine being expressed in the words and actions of a great Buddhist practitioner. How lucky I am to have accumulated enough merit to witness Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche liberating sentient beings, while also using his great compassion, mercy, aspiration and merit to cultivate all beings. As for myself, I don’t have any regret and needs anymore. How fortunate we are to have the merit to meet such a rare and valuable jewel—the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche—in this short human life! Not to mention that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never asked for anything and has always shown gratitude to His Holiness, the 37th Kyabgon Drikungpa Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gives all sentient beings, without exception, the most valuable jewel in the universe. Every time I think of the compassionate mind of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I am touched and feel like crying. In my heart I sing praises to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as in this life there is nothing as valuable as meeting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; my life has now found meaning and I can only hope in the future I will have the merit to continue to follow the vows of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and leave this great (suffering) ocean of incarnation!
