074: Miracles Over and Over Again

I bow at the feet of My Guru, The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

I often think about the grace the most Venerable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has bestowed on my family, a grace that I, as a disciple, can never repay in countless lifetimes. My sister, Fen Yi, was having trouble walking due to a congenital hip dislocation; even the doctor said that she would need a wheelchair in the future. Now, however, she is able to walk fast and with vigor thanks to the blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. And then there is my grandmother who received the Phowa ritual. These events all occurred thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious blessings and rituals. For them, I am deeply grateful to Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

And then there is my brother (Wu Zong-Ming). If not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionate blessings, whereby he was able to see all the way to Taichung—over 100 miles away—that my brother need to urgently fix his truck, I don’t what would of happened to my brother. For saving my brother, I am deeply grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

As for myself, I have suffered from ectopia dermatitis since I was little. With every change of season, I had to go to the hospital to get a steroid injection. If not, the itchiness of my arms and legs would be so bad that I could not fall asleep and I would scratch myself until the skin broke and blood flowed. However, since seeking refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and attending the auspicious Chod pujas, it has been ten years now since my skin has bothered me. For helping me to stay away from the dangers of steroids, I am grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

My father is a very stubborn person. His lack of interest in Rinpoche, however, was our fault, as we children did not follow and practice Rinpoche’s teachings accordingly. Therefore as the cause and conditions were not present, we never took our father to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It was not until Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the Phowa ritual for my grandmother, that my father started to see the auspiciousness of the Phowa ritual. The events unfolded like this: After my grandmother passed away, her body was sent directly to be a refrigeration unit to be preserved. She remained there for four hours until Richen Dorjee Rinpoche—who was far away to perform retreat in India—conducted the Phowa rituals. After my sister called to let us know that the ritual had been completed, we rushed to the where my grandmother’s body was being stored to check on its condition. Her forehead was icy cold (after all, she had been in a refrigeration unit for four hours). The crown of her head, however, remained warm to the touch. We then knew that our grandmother had successfully received the auspicious Phowa Dharma from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We asked each family member to touch the crown of my grandmother’s head and feel for himself or herself the heat. We told them that since my grandmother’s body had been refrigerated for four to five hours, there was no logical reason for this. The above events were all due to the merits of the auspicious Phowa ritual conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. And thanks to Rinpoche’s help we were able to convince my father to personally thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his assistance. Nevertheless, when we met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, my father did not say a word. Therefore all we could do was beg Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to bless my father, as well as thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for conducting the Phowa ritual for my grandmother. Later that Rinpoche informed my sister that he would transfer my father’s consciousness to the Pure Land after he died. Were we a little sad to hear that, but we know that it was not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche lacked compassion, but that my father did not reach out for the guidance of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas when he had a chance—the proper causes and conditions were simply not there. Fortunately we had all taken refugee under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would later tell us that we needn’t worry, as long as we diligently studied Buddhism and believed in our Guru and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas—the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would look after our family.

Every word spoken by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is truth—events unfolded to my family exactly as he had predicted. I remember one night, it was around 3am, my father got up and began violently throwing up. We quickly drove him to the emergency ward, where he was diagnosed with cholecystitis, an inflammation of the gall bladder. Moreover, the doctor said that my father needed to be operated on immediately. In our hearts, my elder brother and I prayed to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We also fed my father a nectar pill and some nectar before he entered surgery. We still believed that the three of us would be able to attend the Sunday puja. However as Sunday came, we were told that the operating doctor was off on Sunday and my father’s diagnostic report would not be ready till Monday. Since my father would have to wait till Monday for his operation, we decided to check him into the hospital and see how he did. We told our father that we were going to Taipei to attend puja and asked him to rest and not worry. We told him Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will help him, so there was no need for him to worry. He replied, “Okay” and we then left Taichung for Taipei to attend the puja. Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was away that day, we still listened to audio recording of his Dharma teaching and were confident that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help my father to overcome his present difficulties.

When the puja finished, my father unexpectedly called to tell my brother that he was alright and there was no need to rush back to Taichung. As we later found out, my father was not exaggerating—he truly was alright! The doctor said that he was only suffering from acute enterogastritis and that an operation was not required. My father was hospitalized for five days and then was discharged in good health. We are grateful for the compassionate blessing and help of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s, help that allowed my father to avoid surgery. It was solely due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinchen that my family was able to overcome all kinds of difficulties. Life is impermanent and our only fear is that there will be no one to we can lean on when impermanence strikes. We are so glad that we have already sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s guidance, we are able to practice the Buddha Dharma with no worries. What had we done in this life to deserve such virtues? For the kindness of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s, we are grateful.

In an another example. About ten years ago, one day a colleague of mine, in tears, asked for leave. I asked her what happened. She said that morning her father-in-law was riding a bicycle when he was hit by a car from behind. His skull cracked when it hit the pavement and his brains began to seep out. She said she needed to leave immediately to go to the hospital. I asked her to wait a moment so I could go home to get a nectar pill. She replied that her father-in-law was in a coma and therefore unable to eat—his whole body was twitching and hands and feet had curled into balls. I told her that it was okay as long as the nectar pill could be placed into his mouth. The next day, my colleague came with a red envelope and told me that she wanted to thank my Guru for the nectar pill with an offering. I traveled north and reported this to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, in order to give my colleague and her father a chance to accumulate virtue, accepted her offering. In the following few days, my colleague’s father-in-law was transferred out of the emergency ward and into a general ward room. It has been ten years since the accident and the mind of my colleague’s father still remains very clear. Every time my colleague talks about her father-in-law, she always mentions the magical nectar pill that kept her father-in-law’s head—crisscrossed with stiches like a baseball—healthy and working well. Her father-in-law, she says, does not look like a person who has had been in a major accident. They called this a “miracle.”

Her family had never met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before receiving the nectar pill. Later, when I had reported this miracle to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinpoche replied that because the person who gave the nectar pill to the wounded had the utmost faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the nectar pill was blessed with curative abilities. I am grateful for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings given to my colleagues, people whom Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never met.

Several years later, the same colleague came to me and asked for another nectar pill. I asked what had happened. Crying, she said her second younger sister’s son, who was only four years old, had acquired meningitis. The hospital had already sent out a critical condition notification, asking the family to be prepared for a possible death. I told her that she should not wait, but immediately go Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company on Yi-Xian road to beg for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help.

She urgently called her younger sister and sister-in-law and asked them to meet her in a hurry. I called my elder sister and asked her take the three to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. They were very respectful. The moment they met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they kneeled down and begged Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to save the boy. Compassionately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave them a nectar pill and asked them to feed it to their son in the hospital. The next day, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to the hospital to bless their son himself. The day after receiving the blessing, the little boy woke up and said he had seen a very pretty auntie dressed in white who came to the hospital to see him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told us that this person was the Protector Achi Chokyi Drolma. Because after the boy’s father had left the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately returned to the Buddhist center to conduct a ritual for the boy. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived the hospital, a dharma brother, (a doctor of the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital) received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche by prostrated three times right in front of everyone. The little boy’s father witnessed the scene because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wears the dharma gown only when he ascends to the throne. One can’t tell that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is an enlightened practitioner or ascertain all his accomplishment by looking at the apparel Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wears on ordinary days. Due to above reasons, the little boy’s family found a great respect for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that the boy’s family were lacking in virtue, therefore after blessing the boy Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said with a smile that the little boy was very good-looking and it was a joy to look at him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then instructed the father to attend the Chod pujas on behalf of the little boy and mentioned the reason for the boy’s sickness: The boy had eaten some chicken during the family’s last trip to Singapore. The chicken contained some bacteria, which attacked the boy’s brain after it was consumed.. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stressed, everything would be alright. Next, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked if there was a tree in the families’ courtyard. They answered, yes. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “I will go take a look some other day.” Later and the boy recovered and was discharged from the hospital. After that, the entire family disappeared.

One day, us disciples and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were having a meal together. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, seeing me, asked me with care: Where are the family members of the little boy who contracted meningitis? I felt grateful for Rinpoche’s concern, but also regretful, and at that moment I could not answer Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The next day I went to the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company and kneeling before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I offered my repentance. I knew that my behavior was still faulty and I did not practice Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings and as a result, the family of the boy was not motivated to come study Buddhism.

Very compassionately, like a father, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told me, “It was not because of you. The merits and virtues of their family were insufficient.” Several years later, the boy who had acquired meningitis—who was now a fourth grade student—returned to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor was amazed: The boy displayed no side effects whatsoever from his bout of meningitis—an unheard of occurrence. How many actual miracles happen in the world? I don’t know, but here were two miracles happening to the same family, yet despite this they still did not have enough merit and virtue to become disciples of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Therefore, it is not hard to imagine how lucky we are to be the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and have such a great enlightened practitioner to rely on.

About two years ago, that colleague of mine asked me again for a nectar pill. This time it was her youngest sister, who had returned home from her studies in the United States; at 29 she had been diagnosed with lung cancer. This time, I took her parents to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Very compassionately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked them what their problem was; they told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that her daughter had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked. “Do you think your daughter is more important than other people? Other families have brought their daughters here by ambulance, when necessary, for me to bless, why didn’t you bring her here?” Continuing, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can save your family once or twice, but not the third time. It will require your own efforts this time! Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still asked her daughter’s name, gave her his blessing and told her father, “Your daughter will be in less pain in the next few days.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also instructed the mother to pay attention to the father’s health condition. Afterwards, the family stepped aside and listened to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s meetings with the other people attending. Listening to the conversations, the family realized that the next day a puja would be held and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be going away to India for a retreat on Monday. Realizing that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be out of the country, they understood why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had asked them why they had not brought their daughter to the Center. Later, the father begged Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to allow them to attend the regular puja on Sunday. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed, but they did not show up on Sunday. The reason was the daughter had been having trouble getting used to the hospital, so she asked to taken home for a day. Once home, she did not want to attend the puja.! So just like that, she died in less than a month.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has frequently said that the consciousness of those without the proper conditions can not be transferred. Those with the proper conditions, but without enough merits and virtues, can still be saved if they follow his teachings. Although not to save you from death, but you will at least attain a rebirth in the Pure Land. Every word taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a word of truth. I am grateful for my Guru’s blessing, liberation and protection.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche treats every sentient being very compassionately, and never thinks of himself. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche frequently flies to Taichung— at his own expense—to bless patients. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche neither asks for any compensation nor tries to show off his powers. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’ actions are for the benefit of all sentient beings and to help them find liberation from the sorrow of the cycle of life and death. “Life is impermanent. Every perception is a sorrow. An enlightened guru is difficult to meet. The Buddha Dharma is difficult to hear.” We must cherish this moment and practice the Buddha Dharma diligently. I hope this article will serve as an encouragement to all the dharma brothers of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center.

Once again I am grateful for the kindness of Guru, the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

With great respect, Wu Bi-fang, disciple of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center
