070: The Dependent Origination

In October of 2000, I was 36 years old. Through an introduction by a Dharma Brother, I found myself at the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company meeting The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the first time. Thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassion, I was granted to attend further ceremonies, including the auspicious “Chod” puja. On Dec. 1st , 2000, I sought refuge under The Most Venerable Vajra Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nevertheless, I am ashamed to say that I did not follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings to practice accordingly; I attended Friday’s Chod puja, but was often absent for Sunday’s puja. Even so, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help for this disciple has not been interrupted.

At the age of 24, I contracted rheumatoid arthritis. At its worst, every joint in my body was swollen and painful, to the point that I could hardly walk. Although the condition was later brought under control, I needed to take medication to prevent a relapse. Later, in an effort to stop my dependence on the medication, I stop taking it. However, a half-year later I was hospitalized again because of the swelling in my left knee. It became clear to me that I had no choice but to continue with the medication even though I knew they had considerable side effects. And neither were the medications a panacea, I still suffered from pain, just not to the point where it was debilitating.

Two years after I sought refuge, a 5-cm tumor was found in my right ovary during a health checkup. It remembered that during our first meeting, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had told me that I had ovarian problems. Remembering his words, I felt ashamed of my doubts I harbored that day. Since that small breakthrough, I have started to be a vegetarian and I have stopped taking medication for my rheumatoid arthritis. So far my tumor has become smaller and I no longer suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Even prostrations are no longer a problem!

Faith is the mother of all merits. In this degenerate dharma age, how lucky we are to have the favorable causes and conditions, as well as accumulated enough virtue and merit to be able to take refuge under Vajra Guru, the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who truly practices according to Buddha’s teachings and truly realized these. Every word by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s is from the Buddhist sutras, and every thought of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is for sentient beings.

We ordinary people suffer entanglement from time to time. Often unwise in our thoughts, we forget about the teachings and help of the Buddha, the Bodhisattvas and our Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nevertheless, the Buddha, the Bodhisattvas, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, worrying that we might carelessly get lost and fail to find liberation from the cycle of reincarnation, are always there to give us a helping hand.

I have never been to any other Buddhist centers, nor followed any other masters. In Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, I listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s earnest teachings, and I see him teach by personal example—all for the benefit of sentient beings. At times, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is harsh and demanding, like a father and a mother. Yet I know this stems from his deep hope for us. My tears often roll uncontrollably down my face when listening to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche give a severe lecture; I know that behind Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s severe countenance lays an immense kindness, compassion, and unwavering faith in his disciples.

“A human body is hard to obtain, the Buddha Dharma is hard to hear, a Guru is hard to meet.” How blessed we are to have met the conditions allowing to obtain these three precious treasures in this one life; and if we do not make use of this chance to be liberated from the cycle of reincarnation in the six realms now, then when? Only by following Vajra Guru, The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; acting in accordance with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings; and cutting away all our bad habits, can we find liberation in this life, although this could repay the merely one of tens of thousand of Buddha and our Guru’s grace.
