064: Fortunate Enough to Meet a Living Bodhisattva

I am Bo-Yi Long, a believer who has not yet taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and I would like to share the story of my personal experience with everyone.

On November 5th, 2008, I suddenly became partially blind due to a temporary blindness in my left eye. Because the symptom was temporary, I was not especially concerned about it. Yet, from November 7th to November 11th when my wife was traveling in India, my symptoms became worse day after day: the intervals of blindness increased, while the area of blindness enlarged. I also started to get headaches, which were becoming progressively worse.

Eventually I was hospitalized on November 12th. That day, my vision was completely blurred and I was nearly blind. I felt quite anxious and kept praying for heaven’s forgiveness. I got my eye tested for the first time, but all the results were normal. I was then transferred to neurology for further examination. The examination revealed that my blood sugar level was too high; the preliminary diagnosis was that my blindness was caused by excessive blood sugar. That night, my wife suggested that I seek help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the next day for my eye condition and diabetes. Yet, having always been a skeptic of the supernatural power, how could I sincerely accept her suggestion?

Over the past year, since taking refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche of the Drikung Kagyu Order, my wife, after coming home every night from the evening pujas, would share with me events and stories that had transpired that evening. Having heard my wife speak of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the assembly for a year and now that encountering this illness, I knew it was time. Since there was nothing I could do in the hospital anyway, I thought there would be no harm in meeting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Whether there would be miracles or not didn’t matter, I would simply meet him with a non-grasping mind—and so I readily agreed to go.

On the afternoon of November 15th, my blood sugar level was still high. Surprisingly, it was not very difficult for my wife to apply for an authorized hospital leave of absence for me. After changing my clothes, I went to the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. This was the second time I saw Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche close up since my wife had taken refuge under him a year ago. However, this time I was to ask for help. While waiting, I pondered on how to explain my illness and ask for help, all the while ignoring my wife who sat by my side giving me advice on how to beg for Rinpoche’s help.

Finally it was our family’s turn to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Our whole family reverently knelt down in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It was my grandmother who first spoke up, asking to be allowed to attend pujas, and the merciful Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed to her request. Next, my son Pin han asked to seek refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the merciful Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed to this also. Then it was my turn. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche looked at me without saying a word. I completely forgot my wife’s advices on how to ask for blessings. I only uttered: “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche! Please let me attend pujas.” During the period of my hospitalization, my wife was taking care of my diet, and therefore I had not any chance to eat meat. The sharp-eyed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche noticed the hole in my arm (the result of my intravenous injection), and asked me what was the matter. I replied that I was hospitalized due to my blindness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche smiled and said: “Come to puja tomorrow.” Leaving Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Jewellery Company and on our way back to the hospital, I felt extraordinarily good; that evening my blood sugar level was a little over 200, much lower than when I had left hospital to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The next day (11/16) my wife once again applied for an authorized absence so I could attend puja. However, this time the request was denied. My doctor expressed his concern that I could be in critical condition if I left the hospital. After our request was denied, my hesitant and worried wife asked me again whether I would like to go to puja. Like yesterday, I saw that I would only be bored in the hospital. It would be better for me to listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings than staying in the hospital doing nothing. Of course I’d like to go, I said to my wife. So my wife promised the doctor that she would take full responsibilities for any consequences as a result of my leaving the hospital and so I was finally allowed to leave.

My blurred eyesight was still bothering me as I arrived at the venue of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and I needed all kinds of assistance from the disciples there. And then I could suddenly see! I could see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche walking by me. He walked passed and soon after my vision clouded up again. I immediately felt frustrated. Whatever, I thought to myself despondently; I’ll just hang out here and kill some time. Mysteriously, as soon as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began reciting mantras, my eyesight gradually became better: neon lights were no longer interfering with my vision and my eyesight was clearer and I could see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche! I suddenly felt an unspeakable gratitude and a sense of magic. Concentrating on listening to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings, my heart give rise to a feeling of deep repentance. And as I thought of my past misdeeds, the tears that welled-up seemed to purify my soul from my deep guilt. While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was on his throne, my eyesight was extremely good, but after he left—oh my goodness—I could see no more. Even so, I had no fear, disappointment, or resentment. On the contrary, it was enough to be able to see for a few moments because I was profoundly touched and was able to sincerely repent.

I was grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his grace which helped my eyesight recovered. Although I had not mentioned my illness to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; regardless, my eyesight became better. I just knew it was his work, even if it could have been a coincidence. The doctors, who had held meetings to discuss the relationship between my eye diseases and the excessively high blood sugar level, were amazed by my progress. But I knew my recovery came from the compassion of the Most Venerable compassionate Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

On November 22nd, my wife urged me to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his permission to listen to the audio recording of his teachings. (Yes, my dear wife, this time I will certainly listen to you and follow your suggestions). While waiting for our turn at the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I watched and listened with fascination how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the followers: I was completely conquered by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s generosity, compassion and grace, and my eyes brimmed with tears. Then it was our turn! I thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the permission to attend pujas and for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings concerning my eyesight. I also expressed the experience of my moment of repentance. Before I could ask for permission to listen to the audio recordings of the teachings as my wife’s had suggested, tears were already streaming down my face. My heart was so full of exhilaration and gratitude! Thank you, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche! Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche already knowing what I had come for and kindly said: “Go ahead to the counter and apply for the tapes!” And with bursting enthusiasm, I vowed to the most merciful and venerable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that this believer, being fortunate enough to meet you, a living Bodhisattva, will piously practice Buddhism and correct all my past misdeeds!
