060: Fortunately I Took Refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

Ever since becoming a believer in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, his blessings have showered my life. For example, a Korean tour group was lacking a group leader, so I went to work part time, even though I had left the travel industry for nearly ten years. The trip was a success: tips were easy collected the next day and the Korean tourist guide was brilliant. I inquired about the possibility of her leading us again if I brought another group to Korea. As it was, another group was formed successfully in the next month. When we arrived in Korea, the tourist guide was very surprised and kept saying that she would like to thank the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. (This is because the tourist guide had been told about the many virtues of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during our last trip to Korea.) Another example of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings in my daily life is that even though my age exceeds the age limit allowed by the travel company regulation but I was still employed by them.

Some matters had come up concerning my sister and they had been a source of anxiety for my family. Fortunately, due to the proper causes and conditions, I met my Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It is impossible to describe the theopneusty and blessings that radiated from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during my first meet him. Later, I attended a Chod Puja, after which I begged my Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to allow me to attend the Sunday pujas as well as take refuge under him. I became a vegetarian and my husband and children soon followed. Although my father-in-law did not attend the pujas, he told me that I needn’t cook non-vegetarian food for him. I was quite moved, not only was my father-in-law willing to eat vegetarian food with us, he was fine with the changes we made to certain family traditions such as worshiping our ancestors. How was it possible for me to change the habits of an 85-year-old!? Was it not all a manifestation of the blessings of the Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche?

However, it is so easy for human beings to become arrogant. Many believers or Dharma brothers come to see the guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche either due to their own sickness or matters concerning the passing of a loved one. At that time, I had no major problems to speak off, but what I didn’t know was that would change eight months after I had taken refugee. At that time, my job was selling children’s books. It was a purely commission based job and my income per month was often only NT$ 10,000-15,000. It was about NT$ 40,000 only for a few months. Compared to the salary of my previous job within the travel industry—NT$ 150,000 to 200,000 a month—it was a whale of a difference. Previously, I started work at 10.30am, took lunch break at 12pm, started to work again at 3.30pm and finished at 5.30pm. It went on like that for 18 years. With that income I could afford to handle all our family expenditures, but with my new job that was no longer the case. I never mentioned this fact to my husband as I would afraid it would burden him with worries.

Certain thoughts began creeping into my mind. While taking the MRT, I suddenly found myself thinking: Other people jump to their deaths here, why not me? I felt very upset and started crying and realized that I shouldn’t be having such thoughts! I often listen to the audio recording of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings during my two hour commute. If I had continued with such thoughts, I would have felt guilty to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings. My Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often says that you will never die of hunger if you learn Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has also told us that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once didn’t even know where his next meal would come from. Someone once advised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to sell a Buddhist statue in order to raise money, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche chose not to eat instead of selling it. Besides, people who kill themselves look dead, but they will keep reliving the circumstances and pain of their death. As such, suicide can’t liberate you from your pain and suffering. My guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that to study Buddhism is to be happy. The difficulties we encounter in this life come from our own deeds. They can be dispelled by bravely facing up to them; it is a process, a process that depends on oneself. I clearly know one thing—if I hadn’t continued to listen to the audio recordings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma teachings, I would have never made it through that difficult period of my life. I would of become a disappointment to my Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In the past I was arrogant. I believed I could tackle everything; I never felt the need to telling others of my difficulties. I used up so much money and time of the boss of my previous part-time job; I just concentrated on sorting out my own affairs and paid little attention to anything else. My guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once told me that I made money, not because of my skills or good education, but because of my accumulated merits and virtues from previous lives. However, once those merits and virtues have been fully used, there will be nothing left. I am so fortunate to have met my Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, to be blessed and sheltered by him. I hope my path towards Buddhism in this life will never end. I will continue to keep my Guru’s teachings in mind, as well follow my Guru’s instructions.

Disciple Lee Hui-ling, respectfully.
