057: My Mother Lived an Extra Year to Learn Buddhism Continuously and Received Phowa to Be Liberated

This is Li-Hua Li. I am grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for helping my mother, Bao-Xi Yan Li, living an extra year to study Buddhism, and when she did finally pass away, it was without pain or suffering.

In 2000, my mother started to attend pujas and finally sought refugee on April 28, 2002. It was around that time she was diagnosed with breast cancer resulting from cellulitis. The lesion was about six centimeters in size, big enough that the doctor said it was inoperable. He suggested trying chemotherapy, but both my mother and I believed in the Buddha Dharma as taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We knew all this was due to the law of cause and effect; consequently, we did not follow the doctor’s suggestion to start chemotherapy. After tracking my mother’s condition at the Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center for two months, the doctor refused to see us again because we refused chemotherapy. Later my mother even stopped taking the pain-killers prescribed by her doctor. The doctor said my mother should have been a patient in a hospice taking pain killers, yet she looked just like a normal person, not at all like a patient in the last stages of cancer!

In January, 2002, my mother had a car accident. People living near by all said that it was a miracle that my mother was not killed because the accident occurred in an ominous place where no had previously survived a car accident. Later, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that my mother should have been killed in that car accident; however, it was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mercy and compassion that had extended her life for another year so she could continue to listen to Buddha Dharma and practicing repentance! At that time the pujas were held at the old Buddhist Center in Min-Sheng Community. My mother had never stopped attending Friday’s Chod pujas and Sunday’s regular pujas. I am grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for helping my mother.

In September 2002, my mother was hospitalized at Song-Shan Armed Forces General Hospital because of asthma. She stayed there for about fifteen days, but still continued to attend pujas. Whenever feeling uncomfortable, she would always ask me to take her to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company. She told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she did not want emergency resuscitation, nor did she want to suffer any more. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would always compassionately bless her and tell her that he would help her and that she should not worry anymore! In early December of the same year, my mother was again hospitalized at Song-Shan Armed Forces General Hospital due to asthma. The condition was much more critical this time. Even just getting in and out of bed she would be panting like crazy. Yet she still insisted on attending pujas because she said Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would always compassionately bless her, thus reducing her pain and made her feeling more comfortable. At the end of December, my mother passed away in the morning. She was later able to receive the auspicious Phowa ritual conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Upon successful completion of the ritual, we touched the crown of her head and felt that it was warm. Her body was also very soft. On the day of her cremation, pink color manifested in her remains. Staff of the cremation house told us that the remains of a cancer patient usually never looked so beautiful.

I am grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ compassionate blessings.

Disciple, Li-Hua Li.
