051: A Father and Teacher

My father’s misfortune when compared to others who have received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help is almost not worth mentioning. However, in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s eyes, the affairs of all beings are of equal importance and regardless of being rich or poor, the most precious offering they can give is a heart of repentance.

We first met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche two years ago. During that time, my father was involved in a long-standing lawsuit and as he had exhausted all his appeals, a court ruling was inevitable. The court eventually handed down a judgment that was to put my father in a very uncomfortable situation. As the time to face the consequences of the ruling drew near, I remember the gloomy atmosphere that pervaded our home. However, our family did not quit, but continued to do our utmost to find a way to overturn the final ruling—even if it meant spending our entire family fortune to do so. At that time, we felt like we were lost at sea, carried this way and that. Our entire family was demoralized and exhausted. Then, through the introduction of Dharma brother Yun-Shan, our family went to the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company to ask for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s assistance.

As we walked into the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company for the first time, we sensed how the disciples and members were filled with happiness. It was because, as we found out later, they all shared a common beacon of light: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Kneeling in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, my father described the origin and circumstances of his lawsuit. Seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s penetrating eyes and the continuously rotating prayer beads in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s hands (later I came to know that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was giving blessings to all beings right then), I was concerned about whether or not my father had stated matters in enough detail—I was afraid Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not understand and, therefore, be unable to help us. However, my worries were unnecessary. I heard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche firmly say: “Go home and listen to the teaching tapes on repentance; think about what you have been doing wrong.”

Our family knew that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wanted us to discover where our mistakes lay. After repeatedly listening to the tapes, I understood that my present life was connected to the causes and conditions of the past lives. My conduct in this life would, in turn, affect my future descendants. In learning repentance, I could avoid falling into the virtuous or evil reams of the cycle of reincarnation. Later, our whole family made several visits to the Glorious Jewel Jewelry Company. Since the date set for my father’s incarceration was quickly approaching, we tried to use the remaining time to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; however, since the causes and conditions were not sufficient, we were unable to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during our last visit before my father was to go to prison. Yet our visits had, at least, dispelled the gloom that previously hung over our family and we had also accepted the fact that my father would be leaving us for a period of time. During one of our visits to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche promised my father that he would take care of his family and help discipline and educate us children. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not renege on his promise: During my father’s absence, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cared for us like a loving father, while also teaching us how to practice Buddhism.

Worrying that my father was alone and might not be able to adjust to his new environment, our family visited him almost every week at the beginning of his incarceration. As we talked with him, we would often bring up the Dharma teachings and enlightenment of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in an effort to reassure him. But, for a time, his situation was not as well as we had imagined. During one visit, we saw his fingers— the result of a rat bite—were swollen with inflammation and his hair, even during the winter months, was cut very short. However when we asked him if he was all right, my father always responded with a smile. Actually, we all knew my father had not been well. His knees, which were never strong, caused him to limp when he walked; watching him as he limped away was enough to make anyone cry. At that moment, I suddenly remembered Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenment to us: “It will all get better.” That’s right! I must believe that this karma is something my father had to face, while we, his children, should make every effort to partake in and accept it. One day, after my father had been in prison for half a year, the prison authorities informed my family that he had been transferred to a minimum-security prison, which offered a better environment and more freedom. In addition, due to his good behavior, my father was allowed to visit us at home. The worst was already behind him. The first thing my father did upon returning home was to pay his respects to our Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Although the causes and conditions were not appropriate for us to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at that time; however, we felt completely different about it than the last time we had failed to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We all believed that it was only a matter of time before my father was reunited with us, while the seemingly complex problems of the past had already disappeared.

In April of this year, my father was released on parole; once again, our family was complete. We all felt we had been greatly blessed by the kindness of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When my father met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that he must practice Buddhism with diligence and repent deeply. Now our family has been following the Dharma teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We hope not only to repay the mercy of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but also to do something good for all beings. Through the sharing of this story, we hope everyone can develop even more faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. A deep thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!
