034: How Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche Alleviated the Manic-Depressive Psychosis of My Mother in Law

My mother in law has been tortured with manic-depressive psychosis for almost forty years. At her worst, she had once needed to receive electrical treatment at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. For a long time her mental condition has been very unstable, suffering from both auditory and visual hallucinations. Her life was filled with hatred and became worse after my husband, her only son, needed to work go to work in Mainland China, not being able to stay with her.

Once, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told us that if a person depends on taking sedatives, sleeping pills or drugs, in their next life if they are not mentally handicapped they will at least suffer from mental disorders. My mother in law lived in a great pain in this life; as such I didn’t dare send her to the hospital for medical treatment and thus prevent redemption in her next life.

Around the middle of last year, her condition became very serious; she would use an awl to destroy doors to express her discontent (our doors looked almost like hornet nests) or express other forms of nonnegotiable behavior and this really affected our quality of life. Although Achi Chokyi Drolma could protect us, when we would see her holding the awl in her hand, body swaying back and forth, we could not help but feel a little afraid. Every day, she would yell at people and worry that her son had been kidnapped. I could understand her feelings from a mother’s point of view, so one Sunday morning, after completing morning practice I faced the photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on our mandala and implored him to give me some enlightenment to deal with this situation and help her suffer no more pain.

At the afternoon puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the attendees as usual. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told us to be filial and it was then that I knew how to face her. During the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted Guru Padmasambhava practices and said that Guru Padmasambhava had attained Buddhahood, but chose to become a Ghost King in order to transfer the consciousnesses of the sentient beings on the ghost path. Suddenly, my mother in law’s angry face appeared in my mind; because when she was angry she looked just like a ghost!

After the puja, my daughter and I went home and couldn’t believe the scene we saw at home. My mother in law sat quietly, watching TV in the living room and even discussed the story on TV with us peacefully. My daughter and I were stunned for a very long time, because just before noon of that day when we were leave for the puja she had still been in “red alarm status”. We really could not remember the last time she had been in such a peaceful condition.

She maintained this way for a very long time. All this can be contributed to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Bodhicitta and his power to prevent her Karmic creditors from interfering and as a result allow her some peace. We cannot imagine a life without Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. I give my humble appreciation to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, thank you for your protection and blessing.
