025: The Cause of Taking Refuge

I remember that the first time for my husband and I to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was at the end of 1997. I was in an extremely bad condition of health at that time, especially at night, I felt there was “something” surrounding me and often woke up with a start at midnight. It can’t be thoroughly expressed in words this feeling of uneasiness that I had even when eating and sleeping. One day I heard my husband was talking about his friend’s son, who had died of disease only at the age five or six and his consciousness was transferred by the compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha, the western land of ultimate bliss. At once, it occurred to me that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche definitely could help me and I wanted to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Soon after, I told my husband to ask his friend to arrange for us to pay a formal visit to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. With my continual insistance, my husband and I eventually got to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after two months.

I recall that we were led by my husband’s friend and drove through Min-Sheng Community in Taipei City to the venue that afternoon. Upon entering the door, I saw a lay person with the temperament of an elder but with a very young appearance, sitting straight, holding Buddha beads in his hands, this was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw me and then asked, “What are you coming for?” I replied, “I have recited the Heart Sutra recently but always feel something is touching me” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “Do you understand the meaning of the Heart Sutra?” “I don’t understand” I answered. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to say, “It is to let you be liberated from birth and death.” All of a sudden I came to an understanding. That’s right! The practitioner in front of me was just the Rinpoche I had been seeking to follow and to learn and cultivate Buddhism from. I thought it must be my predestined causes and conditions with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked me to open my palm and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s own palm to scan above mine. Then he said, “Do you feel dizzy?” I thought in my mind, “Exactly correct! This is so marvelous!” Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche blessed me by putting his Buddha beads on my shoulders one after another all the while reciting a mantra. At the time I felt fresh as a daisy. I also slept well that night, sleeping through the whole night. After my first time attending the Chod puja, my headaches which I had had for as long as I could remember healed naturally like dark clouds dispersing. And the other illnesses I had such as cardiac arrhythmia, tingling in the kidneys, burning sensations in the abdomen, backache, Melasma in the cheeks and so on, all healed without any medical treatment these past years all because I have received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s continuous blessings and care.

Soon after my new acquaintance with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I heard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche say that: “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche likes to inspect a disciple for three years and the disciple also inspects Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for three years.” These past few years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche I have seen is a practitioner who practices in accordance with the Dharma, strictly observing the precepts, diligently cultivating the Buddha-Dharma, paying respect to the guru and the elders, not seeking fame and wealth and continuously benefiting all sentient beings night and day. All of the above makes us feel deeply ashamed while we ourselves are still not making progress.

The thoughts in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind both day and night are about the countless sentient beings and disciples. The number of beings he benefits is countless. The kindness and grace he gives to his disciples is impossible to describe in any words or any language. Like a guiding teacher generation after generation, like a bright light in the darkness, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche leads disciples to be liberated from the suffering ocean of the cycle of reincarnation (the endless cycle of birth and death). The only way for us disciples is to act in accordance with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings and exert ourselves without laziness, in the expectation of benefiting all sentient beings someday so as to repay the kindness and grace of our guru and the Buddha.

Here I sincerely wish the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfect health and long life in the world. May the wheel of Dharma turn eternally, the Buddha‘s teachings abide forever in this world and all sentient beings possess the merits to learn the orthodox dharma and attain Buddhahood together. Amitabha!

Respectfully submitted by the disciple Bao-Gui
