016: An Invaluable Treasure Found

By June of 2001 my wife and I had been married for over 6 years, although we wanted to have children, we were continually unable, even after going to all the major hospitals in Taipei. My wife had had three failed pregnancies. The first was an ectopic pregnancy and we had to receive an injection to remove the fetus. The following two pregnancies also failed for neither fetuses had had any heartbeat, and we had to remove them by means of medically induced miscarriage. During the three pregnancies, my wife had to undergo several surgical operations and we both felt exhausted physically as well as mentally. Every time we had a problematic pregnancy, the doctor would declare it as a process of natural selection and bid us not to worry too much. However, we were still very depressed about these consecutive failed pregnancies. On the advice of our relatives, we consulted a doctor of authority at a major hospital. By means of contrast media injections and a laparoscopic exam, my wife was finally diagnosed as having severely blocked fallopian tubes. Moreover, the doctor at the National Taiwan University Hospital made the explicit statement that my wife would need artificial insemination in order to be pregnant again and even if she did, no one would know if the fetus could develop normally. Undergoing artificial insemination would definitely be a time and money consuming process and my heart sank at the possibility of having my wife suffer from such physical and mental fatigue. Desperate as I was, it occurred to me that a classmate of mine had constantly told me about the many deeds that the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had performed to help others. It was just at this time that the Drikung Kagyu Vajra Dances organized by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were making their debut at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. My wife and I got tickets from a former classmate and thus had the opportunity to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the first time. Seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stand on the stage and gracefully introduce the performing lamas and the purpose of the performances in detail, I was finally able to bring myself to go meet with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and seek his help.

Our sole intention was to ask for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. Nevertheless, we still had a feeling of unsettled confusion, for we knew neither what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would say nor what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could help us with. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started kindly with an inquiry about our problems. When we simply told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche our wish was to have a child, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was like a doctor who had already carried out various exams for us and immediately told us about the blockage of my wife’s fallopian tubes. I then asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche whether we needed to consult with a Chinese medicine doctor or a Western one. To my surprise, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche replied, “Neither is needed.” Subsequently I raised another question, “What should we do then?” I remember Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reply was, “To give charities and make offerings.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then continued, “A life with a child is not necessarily satisfactory, and it would be unnecessary to feel loss about not having a child.” At that time we were too pre-occupied by the thought of having children and didn’t pay much attention to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s words. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told us to refrain from killing any living being and allowed us to attend the pujas that were held on a weekly basis. We never had much of an appetite for meat, so we naturally switched to a vegetarian diet and continued to attend the pujas conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At that time, the Vajra Dances of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage organized by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were about to be performed at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, so we bought some tickets and invited our relatives and friends to see the performance.

I had never attended a puja before. During pujas, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche combines the philosophy of the Buddha Dharma with our daily lives, points directly to the human heart, and clearly explains how we have previously harmed other beings. Although our legs hurt after being crossed throughout the puja, we felt very rewarded and deeply moved at the completion of each puja. Therefore, I finally sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on July 15, 2001. Having overcome difficulties to attend every single puja, I have gained a further understanding in the ultimate truth of the Buddhist teachings bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After hearing my Dharma brothers’ accounts about how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped them, my faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been thereby firmly established. I have gained an insight into the impermanence of life, have grown to treasure the opportunity to learn and practice Buddhism and it is thus that I have begun to repent of all my past inappropriate conducts.

Several months later, we took a pregnancy test at home and found that my wife, without any medical aid, was again pregnant. Ecstatic as we were, we were still concerned with the development of the fetus and wondered if it would have any heartbeat. Lacking faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, my wife listened to her friend and went to consult with a gynecologist whom she had never met before. The doctor only prescribed medication for my wife which made me really uncomfortable. Fearful of causing any damage to the fetus, I subsequently took my wife to the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei the next day and we consulted a well-known female doctor to confirm if taking such medication would be appropriate. Even after this we were still quite apprehensive and hurried to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The benevolent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked us for the name of the doctor and confirmed that the doctor would help. In the mean time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave his blessing to my wife and instructed her to recite the Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows every day. In addition, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bid us to continue to attend the pujas together. At last, the appropriate causes and conditions were met and we discovered the cause of my wife’s previous failed pregnancies. She had had too many ANA antibodies in her blood which cut off the blood flow to the fetus and thereby caused its heart failure. This time a fetal heartbeat was finally heard, and although it was our fourth pregnancy, it was the first time we got a Mother’s Handbook from the hospital. As my wife became a real mother-to-be, her doubt was replaced by firm faith and she subsequently sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on October 15, 2001. Due to her unique constitution, my wife developed pregnancy induced hypertension later on and, although the fetus now had a heartbeat, there were still potential risks as it developed. Thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s refuge and blessings, my pregnant wife followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instructions and attended every puja with me. The fetus also seemed quite well-behaved as there was not much fetal movement. Eventually my wife reached the end of pregnancy safe and sound and despite that the baby’s position within the womb was abnormal and thus required a Caesarean birth, my wife, with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing, was able to successfully deliver our baby boy. She also felt very little pain after the Caesarean section. Our infant weighed around 2,700 grams, and although this is considered undersized, he had significant sucking strength and was able to be breastfed only hours after birth. All this can be attributed to the grace provided by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Six days after our son’s birth, he was bestowed with blessings and a name by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at our imploration. Thereafter we took the boy with us when attending the pujas. He is a delightful, naughty and adorable child. In order to look after this hard-to-get little fellow, we have been giving him extra care ever since he was born. Nevertheless, it is far from an easy task to strike a balance between work and family. Over the years, my son has been hospitalized three times due to cold-induced pneumonia. During these times it was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s nectar and nectar pills that enabled my son to be able to leave the hospital after only a few days stay. My son later sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on August 22, 2004. When my son was still two and a half, the nanny once found him pressing his face on the screen while watching TV. Dr. Fang Yiqiang subsequently diagnosed my son as having 400 degree astigmatism, a rare and serious problem for a preschool child. With this so-called amblyopia, my son might not have been able to see clearly even with glasses. Therefore, we besought Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help again. Thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, the result of using glasses to correct his sight was exceptionally satisfactory: going from blurry eyesight with the aid of glasses in the beginning to managing to see things clearly through his lenses by age four. Being the one and only child in the family, he demanded our attention and asked us to play with him every day as he grew older. We had no choice but to let go of what we had been doing and spend time with him instead. I recall how desperate we were when we didn’t have him and now that we have him, we need to think about, take care of, and worry about him. It is now that I finally realize what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once said, “A life with a child is not necessarily satisfactory, and it would be unnecessary to feel loss about not having any child.” There is more suffering than happiness in life, and yet we stubbornly cling to our pursuit of happiness, not knowing that the beginning of happiness marks the beginning of suffering, nor realizing how we continue to harm the multitude of sentient beings with this never ending pursuit.

We are grateful for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s profound teachings during these past years. We have learned to reflect upon our inappropriate conduct and reduce its occurrences. Having grown to realize the greatness of the Buddha Dharma, I am now more able to accept and face whatever comes at me. In addition, I hope that we will not waste our present lives and can follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to learn and study Buddhism. By continually practicing it, we’ll be able to live our lives to the fullest by liberating ourselves from the cycle of rebirth for all eternity.
