011: Initiate the Condition by Attending a Chod Puja

I lived in Kaohsiung before moving to Taipei in 1999. The only person I knew in Taipei was Zhan Yue-cai, whom I had met in a Buddhist center of another lineage. In that center it was rare to have an opportunity to meet the Guru.

Zhan Yue-cai told me that she was learning Buddhism with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, whom, she said, was constantly holding rituals to help sentient beings. I told her that my husband had passed away, so I’d like to pay a visit to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Calling her that Friday afternoon, she happened to be in the Glorious Jewellery Company and I asked again when she would be available to take me to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Yue cai told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche of my wish to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; she subsequently called me and said, “My Guru said that your husband didn’t die of any disease. He died of suffocation.” Yue cai said she had told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that my husband had died of cancer, but she said Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reiterated that my husband had not suffered from any disease, but had died of suffocation and was thus still in the intermediate state. Some time later, Yue cai called me again and told me that there was a Chod puja scheduled that day and asked me to attend. Having been in Taipei for only two and a half months, I was still unfamiliar with the roads. But after some effort by motorbike, I eventually managed to find Yue cai. She then took me to the venue on Minsheng East Road, where the puja would be held. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who had been compassionately waiting for our arrival, began the conduction of rituals immediately after our arrival.

At completion of the conduction of rituals, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “What do you call the round object used for burning the joss paper?” Dharma brother Xie replied, “That’s a religious furnace.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then explained, “Throughout the world, Chinese are the only people who use joss paper. In fact, the paper money is useless, as well as inaccessible to the deceased. The burning of joss paper for the deceased only brings out their hatred.” Before coming to Taipei, I had been like a crazy woman making visits to various temples and psychics. Every day, without fail, I had folded paper printed with the Great Compassion Mantra into lotus flowers and burned them in honor of my husband. It had been an exhausting and difficult time for me. The next day, Yue cai took me to meet with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I asked, “My husband has been dead for over 4 years. Why is he still in the intermediate state?” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then replied that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, himself, had once seen a 200-year-old ghost. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told me not to worry, that my husband had finally been liberated. I asked where he had gone and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche replied that he had gone with Avalokiteshvara. I showed a picture of my husband to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who then confirmed that it was my husband who had gone with Avalokiteshvara. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked, “Was there a little girl who died?” I replied that she had died when she was ten. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said she had been wearing a pair of pants with flower prints at the time of her death and asked if I had held a burial ceremony for her. I said yes, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told me that the girl had been waiting beside her grave. Thereafter, I began to attend to the puja without being absent once.

On October 24th in the same year, I sought refuge in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. About a year after my seeking refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mentioned at the completion of one Chod puja that someone who had committed seppuku had come. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had left the Dharma throne, I asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the gender of the ghost who had committed seppuku. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said it was a man. I further asked, “Did his face resemble mine?” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave me a positive answer and asked if my father had died under such condition. I replied, “Yes.” My father passed away when I was 15; it has been over 40 years since he died. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once enlightened that those who commit suicide would be trapped in the hell of pitch-black darkness. I am fortunate to be learning Buddhism under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, so my father and my mother-in-law can finally find liberation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassion lies in the fact that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche exchanges Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s own merits and life energy for the suffering of all sentient beings.

One has to follow the right Guru so as not to waste time. Having stayed at the center in Kaohsiung for 4 years, I only received the teaching of Amitayu Buddha Dharma, but it was not until I met Dharma brother Zhan Yue-cai that the proper causes and conditions lined up, thus giving me the chance to meet the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. I cherish the opportunity to be able to learn Buddhism at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. After seeking refuge, I have been following the teachings with complete faith in the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, without any doubt.

When I moved to Taipei, my son had just returned to Taiwan from China where he had been doing business. Unfortunately, he also brought with him a lot of debts. My son, however, worked hard at his job and was able to soon pay off most of his debt. In 2003, he started a computer business with a friend and the company’s sales have been doing well since the two began over a year ago. In May of 2004, my daughter-in-law gave birth to my granddaughter, who weighed 4,360 grams and was delivered naturally. It was certainly due to the help and blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas that everything progressed so smoothly. In beginning of 2002, at around the Lunar New Year, I slipped in the bathroom and broke one of my ribs. Ten years before that, I was involved in a car accident. The result of these two accidents was that each time a cold front blew in, my entire body was achy and sore. However, after studying with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, I remembered that we were told to accept our own suffering so as to lessen the suffering of sentient beings; by doing so our own physical suffering would diminish and eventually vanish. Following this realization, my muscular pain has vanished. My life has been improved since I’ve begun following Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and studying Buddhism, and my son, my daughter-in-law, my daughter, and my son-in-law have all been filial. All these, I owe to the grace of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, the Dharma protectors, and the blessings bestowed by the Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.
