004: My Gratitude to My Guru

I am grateful to the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for I used to be a lymphoma patient and it was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who bestowed a new life upon me. My life underwent a total change because of Buddhist teachings and now my condition is stabilizing and I am recovering. All these miracles are due to the blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

In mid-March of 2002, the proper causal conditions were met and I met Huang Xiao-shuan, a disciple of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. She saw the egg-shaped bulge on my neck and inquired about my condition. I told her that I had undergone an examination at National Taiwan University Hospital and the report came back saying that the bulge was merely the result of a lymph node inflammation. Huang Xiao-shuan then told me how her own family had received help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and that, if I wished, I could seek Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center.

A few days later, Dharma brother Huang took me to the Glorious Jewellery Company to seek Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice. After prostrating myself before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened me that the cause of the bulge was a lobster I had eaten in the past. The lobster contained a sickness near its head and by swallowing this sickness I, in fact, had swallowed my karmic creditors. As a consequence, a bulge began to grow on my neck, near my head. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed me to often attend pujas and not eat meat, and I would naturally recover. Coincidentally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went abroad that week. Due to my lack of faith and eagerness to get rid of the bulge, I followed a neighbor’s suggestion to treat it with acupuncture. However, my condition then deteriorated rapidly due to such treatment. Within only 10 days, the egg-like bulge grew to the size of a fist, while becoming red and swollen. My condition became so painful that I had trouble sleeping at night, and I began to be plagued by fainting spells.

Thereafter, I began to attend the pujas and again besought Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. This time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed me to undergo an examination at the hospital. In order not to repeat my previous mistake, I first asked for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice, and only later checked into Taipei Veterans General Hospital. Not even two months after my last examination, the bulge had developed into a malignant tumor. The cause and condition is ever changing and such a severe outcome was directly caused by my lack in faith, a fact that almost cost me my life. During my stay at the hospital, I took many scheduled leaves from the hospital in order to attend the Chod pujas on Fridays, as well as the regular pujas. I remember Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once said, “We should pray to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas: ‘If sickness is good for me, let me be sick. If death is good for me, let me die. If being alive is good for me, let me live on.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told my family, “As long as she has faith in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, she will definitely have a promising future.” Thereupon, I stopped feeling afraid that my medical conditions would worsen. No matter what befell me, it would be due to an arrangement made by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in my best interests. Everything that comes is my karmic cause and effect; the right thing to do is to accept that. At that time, it occurred to me that wealth can never go with you when you die and, therefore, I decided to offer my savings in repentance in hopes that my offering might enable all the sentient beings to be freed from such suffering.

I had not planned to receive chemotherapy, but because my family insisted upon it, I agreed, but not before first seeking out the advice of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and expressing my repentance. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then compassionately bestowed his blessing on me. Thereafter, my chemotherapy went smoother than the doctor expected. My tumor began to shrink from its original 20 x 12 cm size and the shrinking process, as well, was much faster than other patients. Since chemotherapy is extremely hard on the body, I needed a nutritious diet. Previously, the doctor had been concerned about my vegetarian diet and worried that I might not be getting enough nutrition; however, the outcome showed that a vegetarian diet was, in fact, the most suitable for me. Everything was due to the blessings and care of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. All I can say is that the greatness and auspiciousness of the Buddhist teachings are beyond expression. At the time I was undergoing treatment at the hospital, death did not scare me and I wholeheartedly aspired to go to the Pure Land. My desire was so strong that I asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to perform the great Phowa ritual on my behalf. In the meantime, I kept telling my mother not to take any resuscitative measures if I fell unconscious and, if I did pass away, to be sure to go see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instructions to the letter. That’s all for my dying wish. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is my greatest support in this life. Thank you, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!

My personal experience has shown me that as long as we have faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, learn to repent sincerely, continue to attend the pujas, and follow the true teachings, our future will be promising. Only by doing so can we then pray to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to liberate the innumerable beings we have brought damage to. I owe my whole life to the vast grace and virtue of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

After I left the hospital, my condition has been improving. Once in a while, my family asked me to follow the doctor’s suggestion and I’d get a check-up every 3 to 6 months. All the results have shown my condition stabilizing and my family has begun to feel more secure. So far, it has been a year and a half since I last visited the hospital for a check-up. Recently, the hospital called and asked if I have been sound and well. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the real king of medicine, who has the ability to free our body as well as our mind from suffering.
