Attainment of Perfect Retreats and True Practice to Enlightenment

The sacred place of 4500-meter height of Lapchi Snow Mountain, Nepal, the secluded area where there are no roads or bridges, nor is there water or power, and could be reached only by helicopters. The weather is also so chilly that it snows with ice storm even in the summer as well as the ground mist often freezes.

In the summer of 2007, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche commanded and led Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to perform a three-month retreat at the sacred place of 4500-meter height of Lapchi Snow Mountain, Nepal where the Venerable Milarepa had retreated before.

The Drikung Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism is the lineage that stresses the true practices, particularly its emphasis on retreat practices. From 1999 to this year (2009), His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has perfectly completed 10 retreats. In order to benefit all the sentient beings in the six realms, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche exerted great efforts to practice on behalf of the sentient beings under the guidance of his Root Guru, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once enlightened: “Each retreat was performed with a determined heart to die.” Thus, in the summer of 2007, when waking up suddenly right after the life-threatening condition (heart beat reached 100 bpm and breathing stopped) during the retreat at the sacred place of 4500-meter height of Lapchi Snow Mountain, Nepal where the Venerable Milarepa had retreated before, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, without concern of his own life, prayed to the Dharma protectors and the Yidam, “If my body can no longer help or benefit the sentient beings, please take me with you. Nonetheless, if it is still able to help and benefit the sentient beings, please let me stay.” After that, during such a talking forbidden retreat, Rinchen Dojree Rinpoche still continued performing the retreat without asking others to come to his rescue or conducting any practices for him, and then eventually got through these critical conditions safely. It is obvious that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s aspiration to benefit the sentient beings has been blessed by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with their unimaginable blessings< click here to read related “Latest News”>. Besides, during every retreat, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Root Guru, was nearby the retreat room to bestow his blessings upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Upon the perfect completion of each retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always offered all the virtues and merits accumulated during the retreat to his Root Guru, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, and reported the signs that had manifested during the retreat to His Holiness, who then recognized Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s accomplishment in practice.”

1999

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly completed his first retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India. Being afraid that personal karma had not been purified yet, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recited the Hundred Syllable Mantra of Vajrasattva 100,000 times within 20 days in order to receive the mind dharma of Six Yogas of Naropa as well as Mahamudra directly transmitted from His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. It signified Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s supreme reverence to the guru and the dharma. Whenever having a tiny of the thought of greed, hatred, or ignorance in the dream during the retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always woke up with a start and repented immediately. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reported it to His Holiness, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche confirmed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained the accomplishment of Dream Yoga. After the retreat was completed perfectly, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche held an enthronement ceremony for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who was then bestowed with the ceremonial garment and hat, and publicly recognized Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as the only ngakpa Vajra Guru of Han lineage in the Drikung Kagyu Order (Photo1).

During his second retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received the tantric empowerment of the Chod one on one from His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, and was granted to hold its transmission and the Dharma instrument. It was a pitch-dark night of the blind when a lama led Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to travel from his own retreat room to that of His Holiness. However the thunders roared above the retreat room right after the perfect completion of empowerment as well as transmission upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche directly from His Holiness at his retreat room. At that moment, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche gave a prophecy that the future Dharma activities of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be flourishing and perfect, so as to benefit more sentient beings. Later on when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was on way back to the retreat room after receiving the empowerment and transmission of teaching from His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, the dark clouds disappeared and the sky became so clear that the moon and stars were particularly brilliant, which were extraordinarily auspicious signs <<click here to read “The Rare and Difficult to Obtained Chod>>. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received the transmission of the fire offering dharma of Peace, Power, Increase, and Wrath.

2001

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly completed his third retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India. During the Great Snake Year Teachings of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche in public praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s devotion to the Order.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly completed his fourth retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India, and was authorized by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to bestow empowerment and conduct the Grand Amitabha Puja of Transferring Consciousnesses.

2003

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly completed his fifth retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India. Upon perfection of the retreat, the Great Yogi Drubwang Norbu Rinpoche met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and raised his big thumb up to praise Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for being “a great lama”. In addition, Drubwang Rinpoche specifically had his attendant bring gifts and fruit to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche <<Click here for the chronicles of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche>><<Click here for more photo album>>. At the inauguration ceremony of the Songtsen Library, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche praised that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is an important disciple of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, as well as his root disciple, publicly right in front of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness Sakya Trizin, the representatives from other lineages, and many international guests.

2004

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly completed his sixth retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India. When practicing the Yidam deity of Vajrayana during the retreat, there were auspicious signs appeared such as the vibration of the house and tremendous sounds in the sky etc. Upon perfection of the retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche manifested the attainment of Simplicity Yoga, i.e. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind became unclouded and expansive, and was free from attachment to any secular matters.

2005

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly completed his seventh retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India. Before that, Rinpoche attended the Memorial Prayer for the Lineage Gurus Milarepa and Marpa, and the inauguration ceremony of the newly built college of the Drikung Kagyu Order for tantric studies. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche enlightened that the initial conditions for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s retreat of this time was particularly good. Besides, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche named Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche with “Rinpoche” in front of many Rinpoches of the Order. Moreover, His Holiness led Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, His Holiness Taglung Shabdrung, Gyabra Tritsab Rinpoche, and Tonpa Rinpoche to light the lamps to offer to the Buddhas and performed the consecration rituals. At perfect completion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s retreat, the juice and tea in the cups that had been placed on the altar in the retreat room became fruit jelly and tea jelly and smelled very fragrant. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once enlightened, “This means that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has acquired the ability to rearrange combination of the atomic and the molecular inside the material.”

2006

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completed his eighth perfect retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India. Before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche entered the retreat room, clouds resembling the Garuda appeared in the sky (Photo 5). At completion of the retreat, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche shook hands with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and touched Rinpoche’s forehead with his own in front of the disciples. After the retreat was perfected, His Holiness bestowed upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche an important Dharma instrument made of tibia bone with which His Holiness himself had performed the Chod. This indicated that Rinchen Dojee Rinpoche became the lineage holder of the Chod practice of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage. <<click here to read “The Rare and Difficult to Obtained Chod>>

Photo 8: In the summer of 2007, upon the perfect completion of fire puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made offering of scarf to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to express the most sincere gratitude for the teachings by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche particularly commanded Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to perform a three-month retreat under His Holiness’s guidance from May till August at the sacred place of 4500-meter height of Lapchi Snow Mountain, Nepal where the Venerable Milarepa had retreated before. Upon perfect completion of the retreat, His Holiness bestowed a new Dharma name “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche” which means “Most Precious Treasure Vajra Rinpoche”. Being given a Dharma name by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche himself was a great honor. “Rinchen” means “the essence of innumerable treasures,” and “Dorjee” means “Vajra.” Thus, “Rinchen Dorjee” signifies that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart for benefitting sentient beings and Dharma activities is like a firm and immutable vajra. This extraordinary Dharma name had already been prophesied in the “Long Life Prayer for the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche” (See Photo 7) inscribed by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche on May 15, 2004. The Yidam practiced with during this retreat was Hevajra, the Sadhana that Lord Marpa Lotsawa had accomplished which had not been taught or practiced within the Lineage for over two or three hundred years. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche took about three to four years to collect and compile the material and then transmitted the heart essence to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In addition to this, what was especially meaningful is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was the first Rinpoche in the history of the Lineage to accompany His Holiness to perfect the practice of Hevajra in a retreat. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had once perceived the suffering of sentient beings in six realms from the reincarnation, which made Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche weep loudly from sorrow almost for one hour and could not stop himself. The sufferings beyond description is just as mentioned by His Holiness in the Pig Year Teaching “Milareba had ever said: it is too painful to think about the suffering of samsara of six realms, let alone to perceive it” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reported the situation to His Holiness after completion of retreat, and His Holiness commented” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained the accomplishment of Emptiness.” At completion of the retreat, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche personally led Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to conduct a 3-day fire puja (Photo 6). Upon the perfect completion of fire puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made sincere full prostrations on the muddy ground as well as the sincere scarf offering in order to express sincere gratitude for His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s teachings (Photo 7 and 8)<<Click here for detailed news>> <<Click here for more photo album>>. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accompanied His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to the lodging hotel in Katmandu, the auspicious signs of double straight rainbows (photo 9) and solar halo appeared in the sky (photo 10). Furthermore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also attained the accomplishment of the tummo meditation when this retreat was completed.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly completed his tenth retreat at Jangchubling Monastery, India. During this retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led 51 disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and conducted their perfect completion of 7-day retreat practice.

During the practice process, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not know nothing about Tibetan language at all. The His Holiness of Taklung Kagyu ever asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could have attained such accomplishment of practice without knowing Tibetan language. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche replied that: “by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s teachings”. In the past, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever also asked His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche if knowing Tibetan language is needed prior to learning Tantras, and His Holiness replied NO very firmly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever enlightened disciples that although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not understand Tibetan Language Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always still entered into concentration to listen to His Holiness’s enlightenment and teachings in Tibetan language without any self-own thoughts, so to realize all of His Holiness’s enlightenment and teachings. Also it is as how Mahasidda of Yunga Rinpoche transmitted teachings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in Tibetan during Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s first visit in Linzhi in 2003. Upon transmitting teachings of only a few pages of a very thick Buddhist text in Tibetan to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Yunga Rinpoche closed the text right away, and said: “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realizes all the teachings without the need of many instructions” (<Click here for the chronicles of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche>). Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also once enlightened that “learning Buddhism is not to study the Buddhist sutras. Some people pay much attention to names and forms, talk about theories, but do not practice truthfully, that is, do not apply Buddha truly to daily lives. Buddha Dharma is not a kind of knowledge, but rather methods that can change our future and guide our way of living. You may try to understand names and forms, but do not get stuck in them. One who truly realizes Buddha Dharma will apply it to his living, so as to gradually reduce the attachment, discrimination, and deluded thoughts. That is the true practice. Formerly Monk Kuang-Chin and the 6th Patriarch Hui-Neng are illiterate, and so are Drikung Kagyu patriarchs Tilopa, Naropa, and Milarepa. Many Taiwanese believers hope the Masters to have doctor degrees, considering only those who have doctor degrees or graduated from Buddhist colleague realize Buddha Dharma. This is wrong. Written and spoken languages are tools without alternatives, while true Buddha Dharma is inspired from the heart. Turning Buddha Dharma into logic debates is anything but Buddha Dharma. True Buddha Dharma must be applicable to daily lives. Buddha Dharma cannot be separated from the laws of the mundane world. Buddha Sakyamuni was a man, so all the methods of the Dharma he taught must be doable for human beings; otherwise Buddha Sakyamuni would not have taught the methods. For example, the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas definitely can be applied to daily lives, and once you apply them your lives would turn better gradually. The 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas are not difficult to practice. You cannot perfect them simply because you are not willing to practice them. You think you have to learn the Dharma beyond your knowledge. In fact, Buddha Dharma is very simple once you figure out the principles. However, your heart is too complicated, so problems appear constantly. Therefore, Guru is the most important for learning Buddhism. Never go in the wrong way.” It is obvious that knowledge is not the essential condition to learn Buddhism.

His Holiness also ever enlightened that the Drikung Kagyu lineage particularly emphasizes the practices that are quite different from worshiping Buddha or reciting sutras. That is exactly as the same as what Richen Dorjee Rinpoche often reminds the disciples in according with His Holiness’s teachings, i.e. “Drikung Kagyu lineage particularly emphasizes the practices, but worshiping Buddha and reciting sutra or mantra do not mean practices. The practice is to correct the conducts of body, speech, and mind in daily life according to the Buddhist teachings.” It symbolizes that His Holiness also recognizes Richen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching. Similarly, during the grand 60 years old birthday ceremony to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche in 2006, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was pleased to publicly tell H.E. Garchen Rinpoche that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche guided the disciples very rigorous as well as scolded or even beat disciples are correct. And His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche repeated the word “rigorous” many times, symbolizing that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche recognizes the way how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches disciples, just like what has been inscribed by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche on May 15, 2004 for the “Long Life Prayer for the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche”, i.e. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is “The precious and extraordinary gem who propagates the teachings of the Victorious One” (Photo 11).
