His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Puja Teachings – July 20, 2013

During breakfast His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed precious Dharma teachings upon the disciples in the hotel.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the disciples whether or not they had had any dreams the night before. The guru said that if they had had good dreams—such as dreams about the guru, statues of the Buddha, mantras, or of themselves practicing—then all it meant was that they had an affinity with this Dharma method, and that things would be relatively difficult for them in the future because they would have to go into retreat for a very long time. They should not think that having good dreams indicated that they were well-cultivated in their Buddhist practice; they still must repent. If they had had bad dreams, it was even more important that they repent. Chaotic dreams without focus or a central theme indicated that their minds were very scattered, and that they had not yet resolved to practice Buddhism. If their dreams had been very vague, it meant that that was how this lifetime would be for them. Just then a disciple said that she had not had any dreams the night before, and that she had woken up once every two hours. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that if she tossed and turned to the point of waking up once every hour or two, it meant she was already becoming old.

Then His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to say that during the puja held the day before, the purpose of one part of it had been to purify everybody, causing everybody’s true form to be revealed. This can be hidden quite easily during the daytime, but it cannot be covered up at night. Right then and there His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche admonished a disciple who was a team leader, pointing out that the disciple should have obtained consent from the entire team before giving an opportunity to a disciple who had been in error. What had happened was that some of the team’s disciples had been out of the country, yet without their consent this disciple—the one who was their team leader—had reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that the entire team had reached a consensus. The guru berated the disciple heavily, asking, “Were they unable to sign the consent form just because they were overseas? Or did you think they had all died?”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to say that whenever a guru gives the disciples a task to do, the purpose is to test the disciple’s hearts; all it takes is one such test, and the guru can reveal your true nature! The longer it has been since a disciple took refuge, the more lax that disciple tends to become. After first taking refuge, the disciple seems genuine; later, however, the disciple’s mind becomes scattered. All of you have obtained benefits from following the guru. You are living the good life now, but this is not so that you can live in comfort and happiness. Which of you people’s lives have not been saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? The guru even saved the life of the photographer who accompanied him on this trip to India. If he had not been working at Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s side the whole time, he would have had a great mishap just a few months ago, and would not even be alive.

Everyone should have noticed that the clouds in the sky are very thick today. This is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, afraid that you would get dried out in the sun, implored for them during yesterday’s puja. The guru loves the disciples dearly, and is always taking care of them. As a result, a sweet nectar rain fell last night. The disciples were filled with intense gratitude, and their voices rose in unison to thank His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has dedicated his entire life toward the practice of Buddhism, protecting and supporting his guru and the Order without reservation, painstakingly using the Dharma to teach the disciples. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche holds the disciples dear to his heart; the guru makes all these various arrangements for the disciples’ benefit without giving a single thought to the trouble he himself has taken. It had been sunny in Ladakh, but clouds moved in overnight and remained to obscure most of the day’s scorching hot sunshine, immediately turning the weather cool and refreshing as a wonderful sweet nectar rain fell down. The disciples themselves felt the unfathomable changes in the weather, and gained an even more profound realization of how vast was His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s aspiration to benefit sentient beings, and how the void was filled with the guru’s compassion and blessings.

At 9:00 in the morning, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the Glorious Jewel disciples to Phyang Monastery to participate in the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment Puja to be presided over by His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Before the puja began, by way of a broadcast, the organizers praised and thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the many contributions he had made to the Ladakh region and Hevajra Monastery.

When the puja began His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang approached the mandala, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche following closely behind the whole time. This continued right up until the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had ascended the Dharma throne. His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang bestowed precious teachings and the auspicious empowerment upon all the attendees, first providing an introduction to the significance of the empowerment and then reminding everyone that they must give rise to the Bodhicitta so that they could receive the day’s empowerment in order to attain Buddhahood and benefit sentient beings. Next, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang explained the meaning behind each part of the empowerment ritual before bestowing the auspicious empowerment upon all the attendees.

During the puja, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche noticed a disciple, who took photographs for the puja, leave the venue. The guru took good care of the disciples, hoping they would all be able to benefit from the puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave special instructions to an attending disciple to inform the disciple from the photography team that he must return to the venue. The disciple from the photography team was extremely grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and the Glorious Jewel disciples praised the guru for being so compassionate and paying such attention to detail.

After the perfect completion of the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment Puja, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang entered the lounge to take his meal with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche attending. Just then the sun broke through the clouds, blossoming into a thousand golden rays of light. Again a halo formed in the sky—an extremely auspicious sign—its gigantic rainbow circle surrounding the dazzling sun and remaining there for a long time without fading. With incomparable reverence, all the attendees admired this representation of the backlight of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and received its auspicious blessings.

Recalling fondly the monumental effort His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had put into giving contributions and assistance to Phyang Monastery, the head lama led the monastery’s monks and gathered the Glorious Jewel disciples into a special assembly. There he delivered a speech during which he thanked everyone for coming to Phyang Monastery to participate in Master Marpa’s 1001st Annual Commemorative Puja, as well as the consecration ceremony for Hevajra Monastery. The head lama said the facilities and accommodation standards in the region were not very high; with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche having led the disciples from Taiwan all the way to Ladakh, they were bound to experience much inconvenience. As such, Phyang Monastery had posted young lamas to each of the hotels in which the Glorious Jewel disciples would be staying, in the hopes that they might be of assistance to everyone. As it turned out, everyone was doing just fine. The head lama said that although they were of different nationalities, everyone present was part of the lineage of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang of the Drikung Kagyu Order, and so they were tied closely together just like one big family.

The lama mentioned that Phyang Monastery was very grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for having assisted in the construction of Hevajra Monastery. Had it not been for the sole contributions made by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the project could never have been completed. Back when His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang first instructed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to contribute to the construction of Hevajra Monastery, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had complied immediately. The abbot and the lamas were all very, very grateful for the many contributions His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had made toward Phyang Monastery and Ladakh’s other monasteries. Phyang Monastery had specially prepared a sacred portrait of Lord Jigten Sumgön to give to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, and they gave each of the Glorious Jewel disciples a khata as well as a VCD as gifts. This VCD was of the Grand Puja from the Year of the Pig (2007) presided over by His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. In unison the Glorious Jewel disciples expressed their gratitude, knowing full-well that without His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great merits and good fortune it would not have been possible for them to receive such a hospitable reception at Phyang Monastery; all of this had been the result of the guru’s benevolence.

Afterward the Glorious Jewel disciples boarded the buses to return to their respective hotels for a rest.

This time His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led 306 Glorious Jewel disciples to Ladakh, and there they stayed in a total of eleven hotels. Caring about the disciples’ living conditions in Ladakh, and despite feeling exhausted himself, the guru took time after the day’s puja to make a special tour of the ten other hotels and bestowed precious Dharma teachings upon the disciples.

The first hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples lined up at the hotel’s entrance to await His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s arrival. Upon learning that the guru would be present, the hotel’s owner and staff members, as well as local Indian and Tibetan residents, all gathered to give Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a reverent welcome. With extreme respect, the hotel had prepared a khata, an exquisite tea set, and incense with which to greet the guru. Furthermore, the hotel staff and international guests who were staying there all gave rise to an attitude of respect toward His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Not long afterward, the guru’s car arrived at the hotel. The disciples welcomed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to sit down in the hotel’s restaurant, where they listened closely to the guru’s teachings.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately asked everyone, “How many disciples are staying here?” The team leader answered, “Thirty-six, including myself.” The guru went on to ask, “Are any of you feeling any discomfort?” The disciples answered that they were not; thanks to the travel agency’s conscientious arrangements, anyone feeling uncomfortable had already been to see a doctor, and now everyone was fine. In unison the disciples expressed their gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Next the guru showed concern by asking everyone, “Has your stay here been comfortable?” The disciples answered, “It has been great.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to ask, “Have you gotten used to the food here? How do you like the cuisine? Is it too spicy for you?” A disciple answered, “Not at all; it’s just the right amount of spice.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said humorously, “The owner of this hotel is Indian, and so is the food. Since you all say you’re happy with the meals and accommodation on this trip, in future if the travel agency’s business falls on hard times, it will be up to you to make the arrangements!” With one voice the disciples all said, “Yes.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to say, “How could other folks ever expect to be treated this well? As a guest of this hotel, if you feel uncomfortable, you can just go to the hospital and see a doctor, or get a shot; you could even call and get the doctor to come and see you here. What other travel agency out there goes to such lengths to accommodate people?” The disciples felt deeply grateful to the guru and the travel agency for all the diligent and meticulous arrangements that had been made.

Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “Raise your hands if you did not have any dreams last night.” One after another a number of the disciples put their hands in the air. The guru chastised them: “Why would these people not have any dreams? It means they do not suffer from any afflictions. If you are not suffering and do not have any afflictions right now, there is no need for you to come and learn Buddhism. Some people make grand prostrations all day long, but to this day they still have not become firmly resolved to be liberated from life and death. These days there are a lot of people at the Buddhist Center, and His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is planning on clearing the place out. You should not go pestering the guru all day long; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not have time to waste here. Therefore, for those of you not having any dreams, that being the case, you shouldn’t bother coming to the Buddhist Center anymore after we get back to Taiwan.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to say, “Raise your hands if you dreamed about a Dharma brother or brothers.” Several disciples raised their hands. The guru gave instructions for these disciples’ names to be written down, and then continued: “Why would these people dream about their Dharma brothers? It means they haven’t come to learn Buddhism; instead they’re here to make friends!” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked a male disciple who had raised his hand, “How many friends have you made here?” The male disciple answered, “Four.” The guru exclaimed, “Well it seems to me that you’re likely to be kicked out pretty soon! What kind of place do you think this is? The Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center is not a social club!”

Just then an older male disciple reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that the night before he had dreamt of three Buddhist statues and of Dharma Protector Achi, and that the dream had been very vivid. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately admonished this disciple: “Were you not listening during my teachings this morning? Dreaming of a Buddhist statue simply means that in this lifetime you have the causal condition to practice Buddhism. Don’t think that makes you someone special; all it is is encouragement for you to hurry up along your Buddhist path.” The male disciple kept trying to explain to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but the guru cut him off with a severe admonishment: “If you’ve dreamed about three Buddhist statues, then you might as well go and learn Buddhism from them! This is haughtiness and arrogance; this disciple is afraid people won’t know he’s had a good dream, when in fact these three Buddhas have come to punish him by way of flogging.”

The male disciple was still trying to explain, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately berated him: “When did you take refuge?” The disciple answered, “Nine months ago.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him, “Who’s talking right now? You or I? No matter what your status might be in your own home, when you come here you should hold your tongue. If this disciple wants to speak, then let him go ahead and take my seat!” Only then did the male disciple finally shut up. Then His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche rose to leave, and the Glorious Jewel disciples respectfully saw the guru off.

The second hotel:

Knowing that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would soon be arriving, the Glorious Jewel disciples formed a line in front of the hotel entrance to welcome their guru. A Bhikkuni waited at the door to give welcome as well. The hotel staff lit incense to give Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a reverent reception, and went out of their way to sprinkle white powder in the doorway. According to local Ladakhi tradition, this was the respectful manner in which a Mahasiddha was welcomed.

When His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived at the hotel, a team leader from the travel agency respectfully implored to give offerings to the guru, and implored for the guru’s blessings. This time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made an exception by accepting the offerings, and bestowed blessings by placing the vajra upon the team leader’s head. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also blessed a hotel staff member, asking the interpreter to tell him, “Don’t give out promises too casually. If you’ve promised to do something for someone, you must do it.”

When His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived, the Glorious Jewel disciples gave their greetings. Not wishing to disturb the other guests of the hotel, the guru instructed the disciples not to make a racket. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sat down, the disciples implored to give offerings to the guru. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately accepted them, and expressed concern over the physical condition of a rather elderly disciple. Gratefully the disciple answered, “I’m very well, thank you; my knee doesn’t even hurt anymore.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche addressed the disciples staying at this hotel, asking them how they found the food and whether their rooms were comfortable or not. In unison the disciples all said that everything was fine. The guru asked if any of them had had dreams about their Dharma brothers, and some raised their hands. Of the few who raised their hands, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to say that these disciples had come to make friends and were not yet resolved in their aspiration to practice Buddhism. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked which of the disciples had not had any dreams at all, and a few of them raised their hands. The guru asked about the dreams of a disciple who had taken refuge for many years. This disciple kneeled down and answered, “I had a dream about the office.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolded the disciple and asked, “Who was it who saved your entire family?” The disciple answered, “It is my fault.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued: “You still haven’t answered my question.” Upon hearing this, the disciple repeatedly made repentance for being at fault. The guru gave instructions for the names of this disciple and the ones who had dreamt of their Dharma brothers to be written down.

Because of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s all-embracing power, an Israeli couple who had come to Ladakh for their honeymoon, a dozen or so hotel employees, the chef, and some local tour guides all implored for the guru’s blessings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche fulfilled their wishes one by one, and even reminded one of the tour guides to pay attention to her kidneys.

An elderly woman from Calcutta made an extremely respectful imploration for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. After receiving the auspicious blessings, she kept telling the guru over and over that she felt very happy and at peace. Afterward the woman stood next to an enormous Dharma photo of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. On his way out the door, the guru went out of his way to tell her she could have her picture taken with the Dharma photo, and that if she then placed that picture in her home, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would protect her. Finally the Glorious Jewel disciples respectfully sent the guru on his way to the next hotel.

After escorting His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche out the door, a disciple asked the elderly woman what cause and condition had led her there to receive the guru’s blessings. The elderly woman said that she had not known beforehand who His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was; she herself was a Hindu, and a deity she worshipped had told her that if she went to this exact time and place, she would encounter a person of great virtue who would help her. The Glorious Jewel disciples were all extremely full of praise and joy for the elderly woman’s auspicious causal condition. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s all-embracing power was absolutely incredible.

The third hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples lined up at the hotel entrance to give a reverent welcome to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Upon arriving, the guru expressed concern about their accommodations, asking if everyone had been comfortable staying there and if any of them had felt unwell or had to go to hospital. A disciple answered that one of the disciples had felt rather ill on the first day, but later had felt better, thanks to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Next the guru asked everyone how they liked the food there, and humorously asked whether they were getting fattened up or not. The disciples all answered that they were. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked if there were any other guests staying there, and reminded the disciples that if so, they should not disturb them. The disciples answered that there were also a few Germans staying at the hotel.

A disciple took the initiative to go forward and express gratitude for the high-quality big-leaf Pu’er tea His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had imported to Taiwan for them, and reported that after she had gotten the other disciples to drink some, the symptoms of discomfort they had experienced on the first day had all gone away. As a result she had specially prepared some big-leaf Pu’er tea as an offering to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The guru said that he already had plenty of it, and compassionately told the disciple to keep the tea for her own enjoyment.

Next, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked about everyone’s dreams, instructing any disciples who had not had any to raise their hands. Upon seeing a few of them put their hands in the air, the guru said, “Not having any dreams is very good; it just means you don’t have any afflictions, so there is no need for you to practice Buddhism!” One of the disciples made as if to kneel down, saying that he wanted to repent. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told him he did not need to kneel. Another disciple reported to the guru that she wanted to change, and become diligent in her Buddhist practice.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to ask which of the disciples had dreamt of their Dharma brothers. When a few of them raised their hands, the guru said, “People like you just need Dharma brothers; you do not have the guru in your hearts. The only reason you come to the Buddhist Center is to make friends.” A disciple then said, “I also dreamed about being with the guru.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the disciples what else they had dreamt about, and one disciple said there had been a lot of water in his dream. The guru said, “With such severely greedy thoughts, you’re going to be rich!” Afterward, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave instructions for these disciples’ names to be written down. In unison the disciples all expressed their repentance.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed a very young disciple to come forward, and spontaneously used the vajra to bestow blessings upon the disciple for a long time. After the blessings were finished, the guru asked, “Do you still drink cold beverages? You must not continue to drink them; not even one bottle. If you do, you will not be allowed to come anymore.” After listening, the young disciple nodded and answered, “Thank you, Rinpoche.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said with emphasis, “I’m not talking about coming here again; I mean you won’t be allowed to come to the Buddhist Center anymore. Understand?” The disciple answered, “I understand.”

After His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed some Dharma teachings, the disciples reverently saw the guru off. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was getting into the car to leave the hotel, a Tibetan woman holding a child approached to implore the guru to bestow blessings. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reached a hand out from inside the car and placed blessings upon the child’s head. After that the guru blessed five or six local residents in succession, and they were all extremely grateful and respectful.

The fourth hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples lined up at the hotel entrance to give His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a reverent welcome. Just then, three high school students from Britain noticed the guru’s retinue. A disciple spoke to them, praising the guru as a grand practitioner who was quite rare in this world and therefore very difficult to encounter. Upon hearing this, the three British youths moved to join His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s welcoming team and waited respectfully for the guru to arrive.

When His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived, the guru asked the disciples how many of them were staying in this hotel. A disciple replied that there were thirty of them there. Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche walked over to a chair in the courtyard, sat down, and bestowed blessings upon the believers who were reverently imploring to be blessed. The guru began by bestowing blessings upon the three British high school students, and told the first of the youths that he should not eat any cold food because his stomach was not very healthy. After blessing the second youth, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said to him, “You’ve been here for two weeks, but your mother doesn’t know you’re in Ladakh. It’s been a very long time since you called home, hasn’t it? Don’t you think your mother misses you? You should call her.” The youth said, “Okay.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the third youth, “Don’t be too impulsive in your actions. You should listen to your team captain.” After receiving the guru’s auspicious blessings and teachings, the three youths felt very surprised that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could know about their individual situations. They were also very grateful for having received the guru’s compassionate blessings.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reminded the Glorious Jewel disciples that they should look after these youths; they did not need to be overly zealous about it, but they should give the youths an understanding of Eastern culture. Afterward more than ten believers—including a driver, some hotel staff members, an Indian tour guide, a Taiwanese tour guide, and a young man from Bhutan—all implored for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate blessings. The guru asked the young man from Bhutan, “How long have you been working here?” He answered that he had already been there for two years. After compassionately blessing him, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “You should spend more time visiting Buddhist monasteries, because you have harmed sentient beings in the past.”

After that the Glorious Jewel disciples prostrated themselves before His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The guru said, “We are not from here; you must not make a racket or disturb other people.” The disciples implored to make offerings to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and the guru compassionately accepted. One disciple was planning on leaving early the next day by plane, so His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used the vajra to bestow special blessings upon this disciple. Then the guru expressed concern for the disciples by asking, “Have any of you had to go to the hospital?” The disciples answered that no one had. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “How do you like the food here?” The disciples all answered at the same time: “It’s good.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to ask, “Are your rooms okay?” Again in unison, the disciples all said that their rooms were fine.

The disciples were grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for caring about their health during their stay in Ladakh, as well as about the state of their accommodation at the hotel. Reverently, they sent the guru on his way to the next hotel.

The fifth hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples prepared fruit and other refreshments in the main lounge to give a reverent welcome to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Upon arriving at the hotel, the guru walked straight into the courtyard, and the team leader delivered a report on the hotel’s surroundings.

After taking a seat in the courtyard, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first asked a doctor-disciple what dreams he had had. The disciple answered, “My dreams were very vague. I dreamed about participating in His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s puja.” The guru berated him with a question: “Why would a dream about me be vague?” Next Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “Didn’t a disciple fall ill? And is she feeling any better now?” A female disciple raised her hand and answered, “Thanks to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, I am feeling much better.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “How many disciples are staying at this hotel?” The disciples answered, “There are nineteen of us here; the rest of the guests are from other countries.” The guru reminded everyone not to bother the other hotel guests, and then asked a male disciple what he had been dreaming about. The male disciple answered, “I dreamed about things to do with my company.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him how long ago he had taken refuge. The male disciple said, “One year and four months ago.” The guru admonished him: “Are the affairs of your company more important than practicing Buddhism? What great undertaking is it that you do? There is no need for you to learn Tantra!”

Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche turned and asked the doctor-disciple whether or not he was still doing business, and the doctor-disciple answered that he was not anymore. The guru chided, “You nearly lost your life, yet you still think about doing business? You still think about making money? Other people can rent out their houses, yet this doctor-disciple has no fortune; he has a house for rent, but can’t rent it out!”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then told them that dreams are windows through which everyone could have a look at the state of their own minds. After that the guru said the disciples staying at this hotel were the most problematic of all, and then asked, “Have any of you dreamt of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche?” Of the nineteen people present, four raised their hands and said that they had dreamt of the guru. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche looked at them all and said, “People who make mistakes all day long would not dream of me.”

While His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was speaking, the hotel owner stood reverently to the side. Before leaving, the guru used a Dharma vessel to bless the hotel owner, and bestowed teachings in fluent English: “Don’t be in a hurry to expand right now. Business will pick up after another year.” Overjoyed, the hotel owner thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Ever since the guru first entered the hotel, a married couple from Belgium had been standing off to the side, waiting respectfully. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately bestowed blessings upon them, too.

The disciples were all very grateful for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s care and guidance, and reverently sent the guru on his way to visit the next hotel.

The sixth hotel:

By the time the disciples had lined up outside the hotel entrance to reverently await the arrival of the guru, quite a few local residents and neighbors of the hotel had already gathered outside. Though it had begun to rain, the waiting residents did not disperse; each of them held a khata in hand with which to respectfully welcome His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. One elderly woman, who not only had trouble walking but had poor eyesight and hearing as well, also came forward to present a khata to the guru.

After getting out of the car, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche walked briskly into the main lounge of the hotel, first blessing the waiting residents one by one and then continuing on into the restaurant. After taking a seat, the guru immediately instructed the Glorious Jewel disciples staying at the hotel to step forward. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked them how their stay had been, if anyone had felt any discomfort, whether they had liked the food or not, and whether they had been eating Western-style meals or Chinese-style meals. Together, the Glorious Jewel disciples all answered that their accommodations were fine, that no one felt unwell, and that they had all eaten well, too, for there had been porridge available at every meal.

Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “Raise your hands if you dreamed about your Dharma brothers.” Just then a disciple raised his hand. The guru gave instructions for this disciple’s name to be written down, and told him that dreaming about his Dharma brothers indicated that he had come here to make friends rather than to practice Buddhism. Afterward, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked who else there had had any dreams. Right then and there the guru pointed at a disciple and asked him, “What have you been dreaming about?” The disciple answered, “I dreamed that the guru was driving a new Ferrari.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche smiled and said, “When I have a new Ferrari I’ll let you all see it.”

Finally, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked which of the disciples had not had any dreams, and about eleven of them raised their hands. The guru berated them: “Since so many of you disciples staying at this hotel did not dream about anything, it means that none of you has resolved to practice Buddhism. If these disciples neither practice Buddhism nor make offerings, then they might as well stop coming to the Buddhist Center! By way of this puja everyone has returned to his or her true form. You just don’t believe Tantra has such power, but now it has revealed your true form. In the daytime you might pretend quite skillfully, but at night your true nature has been exposed for what it is. With so many people at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center these days, we’re going to have to start sending people away!”

The hotel owner, employees, local tour guides, and drivers all lined up at the entrance to the restaurant to implore for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. The guru compassionately granted their wishes, bestowing blessings upon them one by one. Afterward everyone reverently sent the guru on his way to visit the next hotel.

The seventh hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples gave a reverent welcome to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at the hotel entrance. The owner of the hotel had specially prepared a khata, and respectfully presented it in person when the guru got there. When the hotel staff heard that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had arrived, they all came forward to implore for the guru’s blessings. With compassion His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed blessings on them all one at a time.

After entering the courtyard of the hotel, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first took a quick tour of the second- and third-floor rooms in which the disciples were staying, and conscientiously and compassionately blessed the disciples. After taking a seat, the guru asked the team leader how many disciples were staying at this particular hotel. The team leader answered, “There are nineteen; twenty including myself.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to ask, “Are any of the disciples feeling physically unwell?” The team leader said that a young female disciple had had a fever for the past couple of days, but that the other disciples were completely healthy. The team leader called the female disciple who had had the fever over to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s side, and the guru inquired in detail about her condition. The disciple answered, “The past two nights I’ve had a fever, but now I’m better.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche admonished her: “You love eating cold food, don’t you! If you like eating cold food, then of course you’re liable to get sick when traveling; this is what the doctors say.” The guru then asked, “What grade are you in?” The disciple answered, “I’m about to start my third year in high school.”

Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche glanced around at all of the disciples present and asked, “Who of you did not have any dreams last night?” Two of the disciples raised their hands. The guru said that most people had had dreams, then called out the name of a male disciple and asked him what he had dreamt about. The male disciple said that he had dreamt about a Dharma brother. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “Who else dreamed about a Dharma brother?” Another male disciple put his hand in the air. The guru berated the two disciples: “Neither of you needs a guru; all you need is your Dharma brothers! You think you come to the Buddhist Center to make friends. Keep playing! From your dreams it’s obvious you have no respect for the Three Jewels at all.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked, “Who else had dreams about your Dharma brothers?” A female disciple raised her hand and said that she had dreamt about welcoming the guru together with an ordained practitioner. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “Well then you might as well go and learn Buddhism from that ordained practitioner; you don’t need a guru. From this it’s obvious you don’t respect your guru one bit.” Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “Did any other of you disciples have any dreams?” Just then a female disciple put her hand in the air and reported that she had dreamt of the guru, but that the dream had been very vague and there had been many other people in it. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “Dreaming about the guru does not give you reason to be arrogant, either.”

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said earnestly, “You have spent all this money and time to come here, yet you act like you’re part of a tour group on vacation. If you’re not going to practice Buddhism, then you might as well take all that money and make an offering of it to the guru. Don’t think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche needs you disciples; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already complained of having too many disciples. Have you not noticed people are getting cleared out from the Buddhist Center every week these days? Don’t think that you can hide and be just fine; Dharma Protector Achi will find you all.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then instructed the team leader to write down the names of the two male disciples for later observation. If they caused any further trouble, they would have to be careful. Next the guru told the female disciple who had suffered from a fever that if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche heard of her eating cold food again, then the guru would not want to see her anymore in the future. Afterward His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her if she wanted to grow tall or not. The disciple answered that she did. The guru said, “If you want to be tall, then stop drinking cold beverages.”

The Glorious Jewel disciples expressed their gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and sent the guru on his way to visit the next hotel.

The eighth hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples lined up at the hotel entrance to give a reverent welcome to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived, the disciples greeted the guru together.

As His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got out of the car and walked into the hotel, the disciples also went inside to await the guru’s teachings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first made a quick inspection of the restaurant, and then returned to the main lounge of the hotel and took a seat. After instructing all of the disciples staying at this hotel to come forward, the guru asked, “How is this hotel?” In unison the disciples answered, “Very good; thank you, Your Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The guru asked, “Do any of you feel any discomfort?” The disciples answered, “We’re all very well, thanks to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche eyed a disciple who was a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and said, “It’s because you’re staying here that they are all feeling healthy. Has the good doctor charged any disciples for treating them?” An employee of the travel agency answered, “Yes; first they enjoy the treatment, and then they can pay later.” The disciples were grateful for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. Next the guru asked the team leader how many disciples were staying at this hotel in total. The team leader responded, “Altogether there are twenty-six of us, including four children.” Just then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche spotted a little girl and asked whose child she was, and why the guru had never seen her before. The disciples answered that she was the daughter of the disciple who was a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “She sure has gotten big.”

As His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stood to go, on behalf of all the disciples an elder disciple implored to make offerings to the guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately granted their wishes. Before leaving, the guru used the vajra to bestow a blessing upon the little girl and asked caringly, “Who braided your hair?” A disciple answered that an elder female disciple had braided it for her.

The disciples were extremely grateful for His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s meticulous care and attentiveness, and reverently sent the guru on his way to visit the next hotel.

The ninth hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples formed a line at the front entrance of the hotel to give a reverent welcome to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. By way of welcoming the arrival of the grand practitioner, the hotel staff had used lime to draw a special indigenous Ladakhi welcoming design on the ground outside the hotel entrance. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arrived, the hotel manager presented the guru with a khata. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately used the vajra to bless the hotel manager.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked, “How many of you are staying here?” The team leader answered, “There are thirty-five of us.” The guru then expressed concern over such things as how their stay had been, how the disciples’ rooms were, and how they had liked the food. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche specifically instructed a disciple who was a flight attendant to answer truthfully. The disciples answered that the rooms were very good, and that the hotel was very attentive; the dishes were constantly being improved upon, and all of the disciples had been very well cared for.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche berated a disciple who was a photographer for the puja. “He wanders around the puja venue at will; what does he think he is—a tourist? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has very sharp eyes; this disciple must not have thought he would be picked out if he were to stand that far away.” The photographer-disciple answered that he knew he was in the wrong; he had wanted to take a photograph of auspicious signs. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche admonished him immediately: “You’re still arguing. What do those auspicious signs have to do with the puja?”

Next, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the disciples present if they had had any dreams the night before, and instructed any disciples who had not dreamt anything to raise their hands. The guru said, “For you disciples who did not have any dreams, it means you have neither behaved particularly badly nor particularly well. None of these people listens to the guru’s teachings; they just see their Buddhist practice as a part-time job, and are not completely resolved to practice Buddhism. Anyway, they do not have any afflictions plaguing their lives; they have no need of practicing Buddhism, so they can are disqualified from learning Buddhism from now on.”

Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed any disciples who had dreamt of their Dharma brothers to raise their hands, and then said that dreaming of being with their Dharma brothers meant they had not become fully resolved to be liberated from reincarnation. They only attended the Buddhist Center to make friends, thinking that by making friends there they would not be led astray because it was relatively safe. Presently His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche called upon one of the disciples who had raised his hand, and chided that this disciple had taken refuge for many years, and his wife had been saved by the guru; so why hadn’t he committed himself to becoming liberated from life and death? This disciple said that many years ago he had resolved to become liberated from life and death. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately berated him: “You’re still arguing!” This disciple immediately repented, and saying that from then on he would be resolved to become liberated from life and death, he implored for the guru’s blessings. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche promptly refused to bless him.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave instructions for names of the disciples who had dreamt of Dharma brothers to be jotted down, and asked, “During today’s puja, what did His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang say was the most important goal of practicing Buddhism?” The disciples answered, “To be liberated from reincarnation.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to say, “This disciple who was admonished just now once wanted to give a large sum of cash as an offering to me. You disciples present have probably never seen such a large amount of money; it’s probable that only people who work in a bank have ever seen so much cash. However, I refused his offering five times. I bet you’ve never seen a guru who does not get along with money! The money he wanted to offer had been made from selling houses; even though it was money he had earned, he had not told his own father of it. As such he was unfilial, and for that reason I did not accept his offering.”

Next His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the disciples if any of them had had any bad or bizarre dreams. A disciple raised his hand. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately admonished him: “You dreamed of a Dharma brother, and you also had a bad dream.” The disciple answered that he had dreamt of the collective karma from engaging in killing with the person who had introduced him to the Buddhist Center. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “That means you still harbor thoughts of killing.”

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to say, “Ordinarily you all appear sincere on the surface. You can deceive your guru, you can deceive the Bodhisattvas, but you can’t deceive yourselves. This is one of the most formidable things about Tantra. You never would have thought Tantra could be used to keep you in line like this.” The guru then told the disciples that he was old now, and did not have many years left, so would not waste any time in disqualifying disciples.

Afterward, guests from a neighboring hotel took the initiative to seek an audience with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. One by one all of the hotel employees approached respectfully and kneeled down to implore for the guru’s blessings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately bestowed blessings upon them with the vajra. In order to accommodate the Glorious Jewel disciples who had come to participate in the puja, the entire hotel staff had committed to eat vegetarian for a week. The guru said he wanted to meet the owner of the hotel, and began chanting mantras and bestowing blessings. Then His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the hotel owner that three or four hundred years ago, there had been a small shrine to the deities in this very location; however, after the shrine fell to ruin, a hotel had been built there. Those deities had never been blessed, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was bestowing blessings on this place’s deities on behalf of the hotel staff. In the future, if they wanted to renovate this hotel, then as long as they did not make any changes at all to the place the guru had blessed, then their business would prosper even more.

Finally, the Glorious Jewel disciples expressed their gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and reverently sent the guru on his way to visit the next hotel.

The tenth hotel:

The Glorious Jewel disciples formed a line to give a reverent welcome to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Upon learning of the grand practitioner’s imminent arrival, the hotel owner and others extended their welcome by lighting incense with extreme respect. They prepared khatas and fresh flowers, dressed up in magnificent special garb, and even readied a welcoming mat at the hotel entrance. The staff of the hotel and guests from other countries all gave rise to a respectful attitude toward His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and waited in the reception hall. When the guru’s car drove up to the tenth hotel, the hotel’s owner and family members presented fresh flowers and khatas. With extreme compassion His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed blessings upon the owner, the owner’s family members, and the employees one by one with the vajra. As the guru walked into the reception hall, the international guests bowed respectfully before the guru. Tirelessly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed blessings upon each of them. Reverently, the hotel guests bent down to touch the guru’s feet in an expression of incomparable respect for the grand practitioner.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked how many Glorious Jewel disciples were staying at this hotel. The team leader answered, “Altogether there are thirty-six, including myself.” The guru asked, “Are any of you unwell?” The team leader reported that one of them had been to see the doctor, but had recovered. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the disciples, “Are you enjoying your stay at this hotel?” The disciples all answered that they were. Showing concern, the guru again asked, “How do you find the food? What have you been eating?” In unison the disciples all answered that they were eating well, and went on to name the various dishes the hotel had prepared for them. After hearing this, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said humorously, “You don’t need to tell me; I can see just by looking at one heavy disciple who has not gotten any skinnier.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the disciples, “Have you had any dreams? Raise your hands if you didn’t.” Upon seeing a few disciples put their hands in the air, the guru continued: “Not having any dreams means you have no afflictions, so when we go back home you don’t need to continue practicing Buddhism.” Next Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again asked, “Have any of you dreamt of your Dharma brothers?” Many of the disciples raised their hands. The guru said, “Dreaming about your Dharma brothers means you’ve come here to make friends; you are practicing Buddhism in order to obtain merits, to accumulate good fortune, and to implore the Dharma, not to be liberated from life and death. Such as you are not fit for learning Tantra, so if there’s time go ahead and put their names down. Those of you who have dreamt of your Dharma brothers think you are doing well to be practicing Buddhism in a Buddhist Center with over a thousand people; you think everyone here is good, and that no one will harm you. These people who dream about their Dharma brothers might be leaving very soon. Those of you who did not dream about anything do not have your own opinions; you blindly repeat whatever someone else says, and you have not resolved to be liberated from life and death.

“If you’ve dreamt of something good, such as the guru, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, or practicing Buddhism, this does not mean you will do a good job practicing in the future. If you’ve had bad dreams, you must keep vigilant within yourself, but this does not mean you will practice poorly in the future. During the puja you have already been purified of body, speech, and mind, so your fundamental attitude has been revealed. These dreams are a window onto your attitude toward Buddhist practice. They can help you see your own problems and know where to start in order to change.” His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said earnestly, “You can lie to the guru, the Buddhas, and the Bodhisattvas, but you can’t lie to yourselves.” Next Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked a disciple, “What did you dream of?” The disciple answered, “I dreamed my former boss came back looking for me.” The guru said, “This means this disciple still has not resolved to practice Buddhism, but still wants to get rich instead.”

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reminded everyone that he was already getting on in years, and His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was assigning more and more tasks for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to complete. Anyone who was no longer practicing Buddhism could leave, and so could anyone who was not practicing for the purpose of being liberated from life and death. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said, “I have no lack of disciples, and would not miss your offerings; I can get on just fine without any disciples at all, so you should shape up and do your best.”

Then His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche humorously asked the head team leader, “What tricks are next?” The head team leader said that this was the last hotel. Caring for the disciples’ welfare, the guru had personally visited every hotel in which the disciples were staying and had bestowed precious Dharma teachings upon the disciples. All of the disciples shed tears of gratitude, and were sincerely moved by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great benevolence and kindness.

As His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got into the car, some international guests of the hotel implored to be given an opportunity to have their pictures taken with the guru. Unwilling to let any of the sentient beings down, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got back out of the car and posed for photographs with the international guests. They were all extremely grateful for having their pictures taken alongside a grand practitioner, and in an expression of the utmost respect, they bent deeply at the waist to touch His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s feet. Afterward everyone reverently sent the guru on his way back to the hotel in which he was staying.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche kept an extremely busy itinerary; however, despite his own exhaustion, the guru visited each hotel in which the Glorious Jewel disciples were staying, and bestowed the most precious and earnest of teachings upon them. With respect and repentance in their hearts, the Glorious Jewel disciples received His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious teachings, and each one of them was profoundly moved by the guru’s boundless benevolence. The disciples were grateful beyond words.
