His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Puja Teachings – July 7, 2013

Before the puja began, a female disciple expressed her gratitude to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for having given her an opportunity to thank the guru at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center for all his blessings. She also praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his many merits.

By May 31st, 2008, she had already taken refuge in His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for a year and a half. At 4:30 that morning, while getting ready to go to work, she noticed that the posture in which her eldest brother was sleeping did not quite look right. Only then did she realize that he had suddenly passed away in the middle of the night. The abruptness of the situation left her momentarily at a complete loss. However, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had taught of the impermanence of life, she was able to get herself under control immediately, despite the great sadness she felt in her heart. She went upstairs to prostrate herself before her Dharma photos of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and then returned to place a nectar pill and some nectar water into her eldest brother’s mouth. She said to him, “This is a nectar pill bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; you’ve participated in the guru’s Grand Puja before, so you need to remember Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s face and voice.” As taught by the guru, she chanted the Great Six-Syllable Mantra for her brother, and did not move him until 11:00 that morning.

Because her brother passed away in his sleep, his hands, which he had placed on top of his head, were so stiff they could not be pulled down. The people at the funeral home tugged at them as hard as they could to no avail, so they advised her to use boiling water to loosen the joints. Worried that her brother’s consciousness had not yet left his body, and that using hot water like that would be extremely painful for him, she did not follow their advice. Thereupon she hurried over to the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Store to prostrate herself before the Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Because her eldest brother had never sought an audience with the guru before, nor had he ever done much by way of benevolent deeds, and furthermore because she herself had not been a good disciple, she really was not eligible to go and implore for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious liberation of her brother. As a result, she did not dare say anything to the Dharma brothers working at the jewellery store.

After finishing her prostrations at the jewellery store, she went back home to discover to her surprise that her brother’s hands, which that morning had been too stiff to move, had softened enough that they could be placed at his sides. She reported her eldest brother’s passing to her team leader, who wanted her to take her father to the jewellery store immediately so that he could prostrate himself before the Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and also told her to inform the Dharma brothers working there of what had happened. Right when she and her father were about to walk out the door, she discovered that the livor mortis was covering more and more of her eldest brother’s body, to the point that his complexion had even faded to a dark gray and his arms were now a deep purple. After arriving back at the jewellery store, she told the Dharma brothers there of what had happened to her eldest brother, and she and her father made prostrations together before the Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At the time her father was sixty-seven years old. He had not taken refuge, nor did he know how to make a prostration, but he very earnestly kneeled down to pay his respects to the Dharma photo of the guru, got back up, and then did it again, over and over, sincerely praying that the great practitioner might help his beloved son. In this way her father made prostrations in the jewellery store for about an hour before he was willing to return home.

By the time she and her father had returned home, not only had her eldest brother’s face recovered to the glossy white, rosy complexion it had had while he was alive, but many of the splotches on his arms had receded quite a bit as well. These various auspicious signs made her feel extremely moved; her father had done nothing but prostrate himself before a Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, yet as a result they had obtained these auspicious blessings. If it had not been for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassion, such auspicious signs would not have been possible. She pointed them out one by one to her father. Sometime after ten o’clock that evening, she received a phone call from her team leader, who told her that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was aware of her eldest brother’s passing away and had said that because of her father’s respectful prostrations, her brother’s consciousness was now protected from falling into the Three Evil Realms. She felt her brother’s torso, limbs, and face. He was icy cold to the touch; only the crown chakra on his head was warm, as if from body heat, but by then he had been dead for more than twenty hours. She immediately told her father that her brother had already obtained Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, and asked her father to feel the top of her brother’s head. Her whole family was very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and she continuously whispered a reminder into her brother’s ear that he must remember the guru’s face and voice, that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help him, and that he could rest easy. Only then did her brother’s still sightly open eyes shut completely.

Not only did her father agree to arrange vegetarian fare and a Buddhist ritual for her brother’s funeral, but he also took the initiative to say, “From today on we will only cook vegetarian cuisine in our household.” A few days later Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was finally receiving believers, so she took her father with her to seek an audience. Grateful, her father wanted to make an offering to the guru, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not accept it; instead the guru told him that he had already accepted his intention to make an offering, and that he should donate his money to the government in order to help her brother accumulate good fortune. She and her father were both extremely grateful for the compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; worried that her brother might not have enough good fortune, the guru had told them to donate away the offering originally meant for him. The guru had helped them, having no regrets and seeking nothing in return, and for such great benevolence they had no way to reciprocate.

After the cremation of her brother’s remains, in the position of the crown chakra on the top of his skull appeared a hole that was so smooth and perfectly round it seemed to have been carefully ground out and polished. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said before that this was a sign indicating that the deceased had been liberated. As she held her brother’s skull in her hands to take a closer look, she truly did not know how to describe how touched and relieved she felt. She did not cry; rather, she felt very happy that her brother had gone to a good place. She told her father and the rest of her family that this was an auspicious sign that meant her brother had been liberated by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. All sentient beings who receive the guru’s help manifest the same auspicious sign; in all of them, a smooth, round hole appears at the location of the crown chakra.

Her father continuously urged her to hurry up and settle her brother’s financial affairs, because he hoped to make an offering of her brother’s money to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Only when the guru compassionately accepted the offering her father made on behalf of her brother did her father finally feel at ease.

She recalled that while organizing her mother’s funeral three years previously, whenever people told her that something would be good for her mother or something else would be good, she accepted all of their advice without question. Still, none of them had been of any use at all; she still dreamed of her mother suffering, and she felt sorrow in her heart at not knowing what to do. It was as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said: “If you have not taken refuge, you have no one to rely on,” and, “If you are not practicing Buddhism in accordance with the Dharma, you can recite until you are blue in the face and it will still be to no avail.” Only after she sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and began to practice Buddhism in the footsteps of the guru did her family situation finally change. And now, as a result of this incident of her brother’s, in her heart she felt very sad, unwilling to let go, guilty, and full of regret; however, she did not feel she was suffering at all. The thought of how utterly different she used to be gave her a profound understanding of how lucky she was, and that we should cherish all the more the virtuous root for us to practice Buddhism that had been planted by the guru.

Next she shared an account of how His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had helped her father. In March or April of 2008, her father went to the hospital for a check-up because he had been vomiting non-stop. At the time, the doctor said it probably was the result of an inflammation. After being treated for a period of time, however, the results were less than ideal. In May, because her eldest brother had passed away, her father had an opportunity to prostrate himself and make an offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which in turn allowed him the causal condition to come in contact with the Buddhist Center, practice Buddhism, and obtain the guru’s auspicious blessings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that her father had an ulcer in his stomach, but that it was not cancerous. After the guru compassionately and graciously permitted her father to participate in the pujas, all of his ailments completely disappeared without a trace, as if he had never had a stomach problem at all. After having participated in the pujas for a year, her father had an opportunity to retrieve a sum of money, and decided to make an offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The guru said that if her father did not practice Buddhism, he would completely refuse this offering. She was grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for having accepted her father’s offering, because only by giving him the resources for practicing Buddhism had her father been able, two months later, to have the good fortune to take refuge in His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

In November of 2009, her father again began to feel discomfort in his stomach, which led to some very severe vomiting. This continued for about three days, but then over the next three days he felt a bit better. This condition persisted repeatedly for more than two years, becoming more and more serious to the point that he would vomit for eight days and then feel comfortable for two. By then he was practically unable to stand up. There were only fifteen steps from the ground floor up to his room on the second floor, yet he had to rest fifteen times for a minute or two each time before climbing up onto the next step. She could do nothing but stand at her father’s side and hold on tightly to him to keep his trembling body steady. Unable to keep any food down, he became skinnier and skinnier until he weighed less than thirty-five kilograms. Also, other than the trips to the Buddhist Center to participate in the pujas, to the Glorious Jewel Antique Store to get an identification card, or to the Chinese Medicine Clinic to pick up his medicine, her father spent all day in bed. Although it was summer, he wore warm clothing and covered himself with a thick bed quilt, but still he felt cold all over, and had grown so weak that he could not prop himself upright. None of the torment her father endured while he was sick ever caused them to foster any doubt at all toward Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche or the Dharma, and not once did the thought of not participating in the pujas ever cross her father’s mind. On the contrary, he just worried that his sickness would make him so confused that he might completely miss the puja. Because of this, he always got ready to go well in advance, and would sit in the living room waiting while she drove the car around to pick him up and take him to the Buddhist Center.

An endoscopy revealed that there was a very deep, large lesion in the lower half of her father’s stomach, but it was without perforation and was black in color. Its tissue was very hard, so obtaining biopsies from it seemed impossible. In the upper half of his stomach the duodenum was completely ulcerated. At the time the doctor performing the endoscopy thought it was cancerous, and asked if her father had experienced any severe vomiting of blood. She answered that he had vomited up stomach acids, water he had drunk, his medicine, and food, but never any blood. The doctor was surprised at this, and exclaimed, “How is that possible? That’s impossible!” The doctor went on to say, “Such a condition should be treated with a total gastrectomy.” After taking a biopsy and having it testing in the laboratory, however, the doctor told her that although the cells had mutated to some extent, they were not cancerous. This conclusion, at which the doctor had arrived after performing an endoscopy, taking biopsies, and so on, completely confirmed the absolute accuracy of what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said to her father a year earlier. With the blessings of his guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and under the care of the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic, her father’s stomach condition gradually improved one day at a time; he slowly put his weight back on, and his complexion became a lot ruddier. By last year (2012), without having undergone any surgery at all, the scars in his stomach had already changed from the hard knots they had been and were now almost completely flat and smooth, and the cells in his tissues showed no signs of cancer. In addition, his weight had returned to sixty kilograms. This was all thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings.

Feeling moved and repentant, she said that the purpose behind her father’s illness had been so that he could settle the debt he owed. In the past, as a farmer, he had sought to profit by sprinkling pesticide on his crops. This had harmed sentient beings by poisoning them and even killing them, which was the reason her father had succumbed to continuous vomiting—it was as if he himself had been poisoned.

At four o’clock in the afternoon on September 2nd, 2010, her father fell from a ladder that was roughly one story high. His shoulder and the upper part of his left arm became swollen, but those were his only injuries. Her father thought he was fine, but she still took him to the hospital to get it checked out. There they discovered a linear fracture along his bone, but it had not shattered, been dislocated, or caused injury to his muscles. The doctor said that if they operated, her father could expect a full recovery within two or three months; if they did not, he would still recover, but it would take about a month longer. Her father was in his seventies; it was really quite incredible that he had sustained such minor injuries after having fallen from such a height. He told her that while he was falling, it had felt as if something were holding him from beneath and slowly lowering him down to the ground. She was very grateful for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s constant blessings which had yet again lessened the effects of her father’s karmic retribution. Her father did not have surgery; he merely took medicine prescribed by the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic and rubbed Bao Yuan Ointment on his wounds day and night. Just over a month later he had already recovered enough to begin rehabilitation and take his bandages off. A doctor of Western medicine would never believe that an elderly gentleman in his seventies could actually enjoy such a speedy and good recovery.

Besides being grateful for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, she came to an even more profound realization that the cause and effect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had taught about was absolutely real. The life of a farmer might appear to be aloof from worldly affairs, but in truth it was as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said. As soon as a farmer starts doing work, he or she begins to harm an alarming number of sentient beings. Not to mention everything farmers eat or kill every day, or even the pigs and other sentient beings they have raised and used to make money; the evil acts they commit are countless. Therefore, having to repay his debt by way of such a little injury was hardly any trouble at all. She was grateful to the guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for lessening the effects of her father’s karmic retribution, and for having given him an opportunity to repay his debt and accumulate good fortune.

She was especially grateful because in February of this year (2013), her father had had the unexpected chance to accompany Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to Jangchubling Monastery in India to participate in the auspicious Long Life Puja, obtain His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s auspicious blessings, and be given the opportunity and condition to share meals with His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. This was her father’s first time out of the country; in the past, every time she had encouraged him to join a puja group to go overseas with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her father had been afraid that he would not understand anything and would be a nuisance to everyone. To her surprise, this time her father agreed to go without any hesitation at all. This old man in his seventies not only had no trouble acclimatizing wherever they went; he was also able to keep up with the group just fine. All of this was thanks to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings and protection; without them, her father would not have been able to have the causal condition and good fortune to participate in such an auspicious puja. She was grateful for this benevolence bestowed by His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Next she shared an account of how His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had helped her. Prior to taking refuge, she had once suffered a fall from a height of about three meters. Five of her lumbar vertebrae were compressed, and she lost her equilibrium and her ability to sit or stand upright without support. The doctor recommended that she remain abed for a period of three months, and after that she had to use a soft back brace for more than four years. While participating in His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s pujas in the capacity of a believer, she had been absolutely unable to sit through an entire puja; every time, sitting so low to the floor would affect her entire skeleton and cause her severe pain. Also, sitting for a long period of time without a back rest would cause her backbone, which had long ago lost its ability to prop her up, to weaken even further. This caused her to be completely paralyzed in place on the sitting cushion, unable to get back up. However, after participating in the pujas continuously for three months and listening to the guru’s auspicious Dharma teachings, she suddenly discovered that her spinal support problems had somehow gotten better without her noticing. She was able to sit on the Buddhist Center’s cushions and not be paralyzed, even without wearing the soft back brace.

After the puja on September 4th, 2011, while she was at home getting something from her backyard, she once again fell from a height. Her head struck a stone, immediately causing a temporary loss of consciousness. When she came to, she saw before her eyes the Dharma appearances of the Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Grandmother Protector Achi. They shone brightly and distinctly against the black of night. She heard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma voice saying, “There is no such thing as an accident. Everything that happens to us is a manifestation of karma.” She knew immediately that this was the karmic retribution His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had talked about, and was grateful to the guru for having given her an opportunity to repay her debt.

Three or four days after the incident, her dizziness and headache had gone. The only places that felt relatively uncomfortable were her waist and tailbone; she could not put pressure on them or squat down. Ordinarily, at home she was not able to sit while doing her morning and evening prayers; she had to do them in a kneeling posture. Every time she participated in the pujas at the Buddhist Center, however, she was able to sit for several hours in a row. Furthermore, because of the guru’s blessings, she—who was unable to perform quite a few physical actions—was actually able to continue making grand prostrations.

One morning no more than ten days after her fall, she was just setting out on her scooter when suddenly a motorcycle came out of nowhere and knocked her to the ground. At once she was in so much pain that her scalp became numb. She completely did not have the strength to struggle free from under the scooter. Afterward, tests done by a doctor of traumatology revealed that this fall had been quite serious; her entire spine, from top to bottom, had to be realigned. Even her pelvis and knees were askew, and her thoracic vertebra was especially problematic. When the doctor touched her gently to see whether her bones were out of place, it hurt so much she screamed, startling the doctor. Originally she had not felt any discomfort in that location, nor had she been at all aware that she had sustained an injury there. Her fall had hurt her so badly; if it had not been for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, then how would she possibly have been able to get herself to the hospital without anyone to lend an arm to support her?

Compared to the injuries from her previous falls, she felt that this time her pain really was not very severe at all. Moreover, it did not last very long; she recovered quite quickly.  His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings were truly incredible; she was grateful for the guru. Finally, she again wanted to express her gratitude to His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for she had gained an even more profound realization of how anxiously the guru worried that his disciples might not have enough time to practice Buddhism. In the past, however, not only had she not done a good job of disciplining herself or amending her ways, but she had not even been sufficiently concerned about the affairs of the Buddhist Center and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The guru’s compassion caused her, as his disciple, to feel so ashamed she was unable to show her face. As a result, apart from expressing her gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she now had to reflect deeply on herself and play the role of a good disciple. She had to thoroughly correct her bad habits and repay Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for all the trouble he had taken to teach her so that she did not encumber the guru or waste any more of the guru’s time. Furthermore, she now had an even stronger sense and realization of how urgently sentient beings needed the Dharma’s help. Given that there were still many sentient beings out there with no one to rely on who were in need of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s assistance, she, as a disciple, had to work hard at doing good; only then could the guru concentrate on helping those suffering sentient beings without having to worry about anything else.

She hoped that she and all sentient beings would make an effort to cherish the opportunity to practice Buddhism with His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in this lifetime, because once missed it would be gone; no opportunity just sits there forever without changing. She was grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and prayed that the guru would keep turning the Dharma wheel and that the Dharma would remain in the world so that all sentient beings, too, would be able to practice Buddhism and be liberated. She also prayed that His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would spread the Dharma far and wide, benefiting all sentient beings, and that the Drikung Kagyu Lineage would flourish forever.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche invited His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche, Rasbsang Rinpoche, and five lamas to pay a formal visit to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei. With a contingent of Dharma musicians leading the way, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave a special welcome to the two Rinpoches in person at the main entrance of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche ascended the Dharma throne with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and together they bestowed precious Dharma teachings upon all the attendees, and led them in a joint performance of the Guru Yoga and a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra.

First His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that today the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had been granted the great good fortune to invite His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche there to form a Dharma affinity with everyone present. He is a Rinpoche who is much cultivated and has attained a very high level of fruition. Nuba Rinpoche is older than Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but the former speaks standard Chinese much better than the latter. The first time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Nuba Rinpoche met was in 1997, and in 2007 when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, under instructions from His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, went into retreat on the holy mountain of Lapchi in Nepal, Nuba Rinpoche also helped Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a great deal. Without Nuba Rinpoche’s assistance at the time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have had a very hard time during his retreat, because Mt. Lapchi stands in a very remote location and the living conditions there would be unimaginable to such as yourselves. Mt. Lapchi is the holy place where the Venerable Milarepa himself practiced, and Nuba Rinpoche bases his own practice out of this holy location. On this visit to Taiwan, Nuba Rinpoche’s itinerary was very busy; many Buddhist centers had invited him to expound the Dharma, including many Exoteric temples. It was a rare opportunity indeed that the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had been able to invite a reincarnated Rinpoche to come and bless everyone present today.

At the same time, the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had also invited Rasbsang Rinpoche to visit today as well. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had watched Rasbsang Rinpoche practice alongside His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang for a long time; he was a down-to-earth practitioner, a man of few words who always bent his head silently to the task at hand, never once giving anyone the impression of arrogance. All the behavior exhibited by a Rinpoche reflects the sort of attitude that a practitioner should have. This is not easy for a practitioner to cultivate. In their Buddhist practice, both Rinpoches who had been invited today were role models everyone should consider worth learning from. Nuba Rinpoche is already more than seventy years old; older than His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always seen Nuba Rinpoche be very respectful toward the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Every time Nuba Rinpoche sees His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, he always makes grand prostrations before the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang; everything Rinpoche does is for sentient beings and the Order. In addition Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went on to welcome the Drikung Kagyu lamas. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that he had already said enough, so now would respectfully ask His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche to bestow Dharma teachings upon everyone.

His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche said that he was very happy to come to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center today. He was indebted to all the support His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had given him in Nepal, which had allowed the inauguration of Rinchen Ling Monastery to come to a perfect completion. Within the monastery there was a Chakrasamvara’s secret mandala. Every year a memorial puja is held on August 27th to commemorate the anniversary of His Eminence Pachung Rinpoche’s birth, and Buddhist centers of the Drikung Kagyu Order in Singapore, Taipei, and other places hold many such memorial pujas as well. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has spared no effort to lend support, giving much assistance to Nuba Rinpoche and monasteries, so Nuba Rinpoche was here to express thanks on its behalf to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center.

The Drikung Kagyu Lineage can be traced back to such gurus as Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, and Milarepa, all the way back to Lord Jigten Sumgön, and in order to achieve attainment a Rinpoche must obtain the blessings of the lineage gurus. Today we will lead you all together in a performance of the Guru Yoga and a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra. To achieve attainment, a practitioner must have a resolute and unshakable faith in his or her guru and maintain a completely reverent attitude, just as Naropa had for Tilopa. Even though Nuba Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche do not come into frequent contact with one another, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s constant respect toward and faith in the Drikung Kagyu Order has always been quite admirable, which is why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was able to obtain the lineage gurus’ blessings and achieve such attainment. Therefore, leading everyone together in a performance of the Guru Yoga today, under the blessings of the lineage gurus, can bring you great benefits.

Nuba Rinpoche said that after performing the Dharma he would lead everyone together in a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra. In the past he once had the causal condition to come with Drubwang Rinpoche to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. At the time the Buddhist Center was located in a relatively small building, and Drubwang Rinpoche led everyone in a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra. This mantra is very important, and Drubwang Rinpoche constantly encouraged everyone to chant it often. It was this causal condition that had allowed Nuba Rinpoche to return to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center today and also lead everyone in a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra. Normally you listen to many teachings bestowed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Today Nuba Rinpoche will just lead everyone together in a performance of the Guru Yoga and a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra so that you can all form an affinity with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and gurus. You should listen closely to what your guru teaches, and have a respectful and resolute faith in him. The guru constitutes a totality of all the Buddhas of the three times; only by regarding the guru as no different from the Buddha can a disciple obtain the greatest benefits of all.

Next, His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and Rasbsang Rinpoche led all the attendees in a performance of the Guru Yoga and a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra.

Upon the perfect completion of the rituals, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the fact that His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche had come today to perform the Dharma at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had provided a great merit. As such, everyone should be grateful to His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche, Rasbsang Rinpoche, and all of the Dirkung Kagyu lamas. In unison, all of the attendees expressed their gratitude to them. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then said that it was only due to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center’s great good fortune that it had been able to invite the reincarnated Nuba Rinpoche here today to lead everyone in a performance of the Dharma. You must not let His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche down; you must promise the guru and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas that in the future you will definitely dedicate yourselves to your Buddhist practice and act in accordance with what the Dharma has taught you so that you remain worthy of today’s great merit of Nuba Rinpoche’s having led everyone in a performance of the Dharma.

Next, His Eminence Nuba Rinpocha said that he actually did not have much to say; on ordinary days His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had spoken to everyone about many Dharma teachings already. His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for having invited him there. “Glorious Jewel” was the Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgön’s sacred title, so Nuba Rinpoche said again and again with great modesty how extremely honored he felt at having been able to have the opportunity to come here to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and join His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to lead everyone in this auspicious puja and to conduct the Tsok ritual. Coming here today to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to chant the Great Six-Syllable Mantra with so many people reminded him of when he came here with Drubwang Rinpoche years ago; then, too, they led everyone in a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra. Drubwang Rinpoche was always promoting the Great Six-Syllable Mantra, so today Nuba Rinpoche encouraged everyone to chant it often as well.

We are all living in the Age of Degenerate Dharma, so we are plagued with many afflictions. In today’s competitive society, there are many things at the workplace which cause us to be afflicted; there never seems to be enough time. The Great Six-Syllable Mantra is the mantra with which everyone is most familiar; it is easily memorized, so is relatively acceptable to everyone. If you can practice a Dharma method which is attuned to the Buddha, this will have the greatest benefit for sentient beings. Therefore, no matter where you are, you are all encouraged to chant the Great Six-Syllable Mantra together. Everyone should carry forward the Great Six-Syllable Mantra together. You can chant it any time and any place, whether you are walking or sitting. In doing so, we can add to our compassion. The most important thing in our Buddhist practice is compassion. Under the premise of compassion, we can cultivate a Bodhi mind; only then can we attain the fruition of Buddhahood. Only by planting this cause will such an effect come about. Therefore, you must love all sentient beings with a compassionate heart; this is very important.

You are all able to practice Buddhism under the guidance of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; you already have a guru to guide you, so there is nothing in particular that need be said to you all. You are able to attend a Buddhist Center as great as this one, so you should listen closely to what your guru says and live in harmony with your Dharma brothers; only then can you achieve attainment. His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche said that he felt very honored to have been able to come to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to perform the Dharma today, and expressed his gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for holding such a perfectly auspicious puja. Finally, he wished everyone good health and that everything would go smoothly and successfully for them.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that he had an announcement which he had originally not planned on making today; however, His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche had kept reminding everyone to chant the Great Six-Syllable Mantra, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had also had a very deep affinity with Drubwang Rinpoche. Every time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to India for a retreat, he would always first obtain Drubwang Rinpoche’s blessings. Drubwang Rinpoche once instructed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to reinstate the tradition at Drikung Thil Monastery for the lamas to chant the Great Six-Syllable Mantra for twenty-four hours straight, forty-five days out of every year. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already begun doing this for a few years. While living, Drubwang Rinpoche had propagated the Great Six-Syllable Mantra, and recently some other Drikung Kagyu centers had begun activities to chant the Great Six-Syllable Mantra a billion times, an idea which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had had before. In Kaohsiung Chairman Wu had invited His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to participate in this activity. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had promised to participate, but had been waiting for the causal condition to mature so that the opportunity would arise.

Today His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche led you all in a performance of the Guru Yoga, and you obtained the blessings of the lineage gurus. In addition, Rasbsang Rinpoche led you in a recitation of the Great Six-Syllable Mantra as well. This was a good causal origination; it can cause you to have no hindrances while chanting the Great Six-Syllable Mantra. Because there is sufficient causal origination, when the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center makes all the arrangements, all of its disciples will continuously chant the Great Six-Syllable Mantra a billion times together at a set date. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said humorously that this did not mean each individual would chant it a billion times; it meant all of the disciples chanting the Great Six-Syllable Mantra together would add up to a billion times. Because you all had the opportunity to participate in such an auspicious puja today, during which His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche and Rasbsang Rinpoche have led you all in a performance of the Dharma, you should dedicate all of the merits you obtained to the lineage gurus, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Drubwang Rinpoche, Nuba Rinpoche, Rasbsang Rinpoche, the lamas and believers who participated in today’s puja with you, and all sentient beings in the Six Realms. All the attendees broke into spontaneous applause, expressing gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for having bestowed upon the disciples the opportunity to participate in today’s distinguished puja.

Upon the perfect completion of the puja, all the attendees stood in reverence as His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and Rasbsang Rinpoche descended the Dharma throne. In unison they expressed their gratitude to His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche and His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for their auspicious Dharma rituals and teachings. While they were leaving, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche paid his respects and saw the Rinpoches to the door of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center personally. The guru also instructed the general director of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Cultural Exchange Association to escort the practitioners outside.

While the puja was underway, the weather had been exceedingly unstable; amidst a torrential downpour lightning had flashed and thunder growled. However, upon the perfect completion of the puja, to everyone’s surprise the haze was swept away to reveal a clear, blue sky. This was an incredibly auspicious sign, and all the attendees were full of praise for the auspicious merits granted by today’s puja which had brought benefits to countless sentient beings. They expressed their gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for always creating virtuous causal conditions for the disciples, for bestowing upon them an opportunity to form an affinity with the great practitioners of the Drikung Kagyu Order, and for helping them to accumulate virtuous affinities, good fortune, and merits for practicing Buddhism. The guru constitutes a totality of all the Buddhas, and is the root of all attainment. Without the guru’s blessings and teachings, the disciples would not be able to achieve any attainment at all on the Buddhist path. Today His Eminence Nuba Rinpoche emphasized again and again the importance of the guru, and vehemently reminded the Glorious Jewel disciples that they must act according to the guru’s teachings and practice in compliance with the Dharma taught by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The disciples felt gratitude deep down in their hearts and vowed to dedicate themselves to their practice to repay the endless benevolence shown them by the guru and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
