Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

October 9, 2011

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei, and enlightened attendees the concepts of “the Worldy Truth” and “the Ultimate Truth”. After the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceeded to meet 21 believers from 4:30 PM to 5:40 PM, giving them Buddhist enlightenment and helping them relieve all kinds of suffering in the world.

Before the beginning of the puja, a female disciple repented publicly and appreciated the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not saved her husband, who is a disciple as well, she would have already become a widow by now. The His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told this disciple that she had not spoken her story clearly and had only described things partially when she had repented publicly last time. So today she would report to everyone the complete story of how the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saved her husband.

On Tuesday morning, at nearly 6 o’clock, her husband got up due to vomiting. Because he had been uncomfortable the day before, both of them thought he just suffered from diarrhea. After vomiting, he did not say a word. She asked him whether he wanted to go to the emergency room of a hospital. He did not respond either. The only sentence, heard more clearly by her, and spoken by him while he held the toilet, vomiting, was, “I would like to repent to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!” Other than that, he had not spoken any other complete sentences. Later, he motioned to her to support him to rest on the sofa. Both of them thought he was just uncomfortable because of vomiting, so she did not pay too much attention to him. Then, at 8 o’clock, when she wanted to help him to apply for a day off work, she discovered that he was unconscious and he could not be wakened no matter how hard she tried. At this time, she then sent him to an emergency room. It was already past 10 o’clock in the morning. When he arrived at the hospital, his GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) was 3. In medical science, GCS 3 is the criterion for a persistent vegetative state. But when arriving at the hospital, he was still snoring and apparently looked like a person who was deeply asleep. She did not know exactly what had happened to him. Not having anything to depend on, she could only think of one thing, “I should sign up to seek an audience with the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on Saturday, quickly. Only the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can help us.”

While her husband was still being checked in the hospital through a variety of examinations and before she heard any results from these examinations, the Dharma brother who is responsible for arranging meetings with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on Saturday had gotten the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instructions and had been told that her husband’s unconsciousness was caused by the fact that a blood vessel of his left brain had ruptured and compressed the blood vessels of his right brain. The Dharma brother then told her about this condition. Later, after several examination reports were issued and read by the doctor, who is also a disciple of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the doctor said that the conditions fortold by the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the conclusive results from the reports he read were exactly the same. In medical procedures, in order to proceed to the next step, more complete examinations are required. The Dharma brothers consulted His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche indicated that the problems were just in those two places and that they should take care of the two places directly. So the doctor Dharma brother found very quickly a suitable place to do External Ventricular Drainage (EVD) operation for her husband.

She later learned that during that critical period, if His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not indicated where the problems were very quickly and very clearly, if there had been a delay of a few more minutes, it would have been very possible that her husband could not be saved at all. There were a lot of people who had told the stories that their family member with a GCS of 3 had still not become conscious until now, or might have even died if resuscitation procedures had been delayed. At the time, if His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not quickly indicated to them where the problems were, it would have been possible that her husband’s life could not be saved. Even if his life could be saved, it would have also been possible that he would become unconscious!

The night after the surgery, her husband’s GCS had climbed to 6. Although he still could not speak, when she mentioned to him that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had blessed him and he should strive to visualize His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, his eyes shed tears. At that day, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had spent a great deal of energy to perform Dharmas to bless her husband. A Dharma brother relayed the story that her husband’s consciousness had run to repent to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and implored Rinpoche to bless him many times that day. This female disciple was very grateful to the His Eminence Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At the same time, she repented that she typically had not strived to practice Buddhism diligently and yet had still troubled the guru in this way.

With the blessings bestowed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her husband recovered soon the next day; the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) advanced to 12 the next day and the third day it improved to 13 and 14. When the GCS is 15, the patient should normally fully recover! It is a medical miracle to recover so fast. Her husband could even recite the text and the mantra of A-Chi Dharma Protector in the second evening. Although he couldn’t see the text because of his position lying down, he could recite it according to his memory. It was indicative that his memory and consciousness were not damaged too seriously. This is all due to the blessings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Without the blessings, there wouldn’t be the medical miracle that a patient like her husband could recite the Dharma text the next day.

At 10 PM that night, the Dharma brother in charge called and informed her about the enlightenment of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche: Her husband will not die but has to endure some pain. Upon hearing this, she felt very repentant. It was not the first time her husband had a stroke. Ten years ago when she just took refuge, her husband had had a stroke, which caused half of his body to be paralyzed. He took a little more than a month to recuperate. At that time when she made an audience with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her husband had not taken refuge yet. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also compassionately told her: Don’t worry; he will not die! She was quite foolish then and told His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she worried that her husband would become handicapped. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then gave her the following enlightenment: “Isn’t it self-inflicted?” At that time she was very confused why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said this. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued “Among so many men, why did you choose him?” Although the enlightenment seemed understated, it was a critical reminder. What happened is due to her choices. They are causes she had created which resulted in these effects.

Fortunately, they had the blessings of Most Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the cares of Buddha Dharma. Many vicious karmic retributions resulted from their evildoings were manifested at that time. They once had an abortion because of Thalassemia. Taking life had caused a serious karma. She also repented that she had done harm to sentient beings. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once gave the following enlightenment: Those who had committed heavy killing karma will, in this life, have quarrels among family members, suffer various illnesses, have a short life span, and enter into hell after passing away! She is very grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the teachings and enlightenment of Buddha Dharma. So when there were so many horrible things happened, they still could rely on Buddha Dharma and to face them. Those horrible things included her husband having a stroke and they both had had affairs. She repented that she had broken the precept of not committing adultery and taking life. Whenever thinking of these, she felt guilty and ashamed.

It has been a long time since she took refuge. Even she has had chances to listen to the Dharma teachings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she hasn’t truly practiced what was taught. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has conveyed to them many teachings, but they still haven’t paid attention. These are all of their faults. Besides, they have wasted the virtues of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help them. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that, on the day her husband had a stroke, she couldn’t finish her talk without crying. So Rinchen Dorejee Rinpoche also reminded her not to cry. She is grateful for the reminder and caring of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

On the third day after the stroke, her husband could recognize people and verbally communicate with Dharma brothers. These improvements are due to the blessings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When her husband awoke from the coma, he said his brain was damaged and had become dopey. He prayed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help and bless him. On the fourth day, he said he would like to make a bow to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, his head had a big hole and hoped Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could bless him so the hole could be healed. From these evidences, she knew that during the most urgent moment while he was in a coma, the only person he could rely on was His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Only Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could help him.

She and her family members went to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the blessings and help. Besides showing her appreciation, this female disciple also wished that if she could beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on behalf of her husband to bestow blessing to her husband again in order to let him attend the puja as soon as possible. However she did not dare to speak it out loud because she had made lots of mistake before and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had help them a lot with plenty of virtues. She only reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that her husband also had apoplexy and was helped by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened her that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can only help him once. He still did not understand the importance of making an offering after having apoplexy. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often reminded everybody “Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will save those who have urgent needs but not the ones who are poor.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further talked to her “He was not obedient and he always has his own opinion for everything, so what’s the use in attending the puja if he had opinion? He was still not obedient” Her family members might not understand the aforementioned conversation. But when she heard that, she immediately knew that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had discerned everything including what she was thinking, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche directly gave the answer. It is useless to attend the puja if one only has the attitude to seek a blessing.

Many people told her that her husband was devoted to being a volunteer. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened, he thought that he devoted himself to be a volunteer, therefore he did not cultivate well the Buddha dharma that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught, he did not perform full prostration anymore after completing 110,000 times of performing full prostrations, and he did not regularly make offerings either. Yesterday he also confessed that he was reluctant to make an offering. He thought that since he had been already a volunteer, it would be unnecessary to follow the Buddha’s teaching. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again bestowed the blessing to her husband and continued to enlighten her compassionately, Richen Dorjee Rinpoche explained that he would be able to leave the ICU after 10 days to 12 days. It was the exact time that the physician who talked to her before had indicated. There was once a Dharma brother who shared the experience: “You may know Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ability is extraordinary, but you do not know how extraordinary it is.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not need to rely on the instrument, but he can get the same answer, which is the same as the report from the medical instrument.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also told to her sister “Your family had heavy killing karma, but you still do not work hard.” Her sister replied to Rinpoche “Yes, I see,” it was because that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened to her before, several years ago, and her sister met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche because she had fibroid. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the blessing to her, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche affirmatively told her that that was not cancer. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further asked what her brothers’ Chinese Zodiac sign were, and then enlightened her, one of her brothers whose Chinese Zodiac sign is Horse would have problems. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened her that her husband’s ancestors had serious killing karma. During that time, she reported to her father-in-law to confirm with the matter, her father-in-law confirmed that it was true, his great-grandfather was a practitioner of Chinese medicine in Indonesia; he was famous for having the prescription of abortion, which was why his ancestors had a serious killing karma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often enlightens us: We cannot avoid the karmic retribution. Several years ago they also had an abortion to hurt their baby, the karmic retribution for which was caused by their ancestors. For those reasons, they knew to seize the opportunity to follow and learn Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teaching of Buddha Dharma in order to repay their debt in this life.

The female disciple repented of her failure in making proper offerings. She made her offerings occasionally without consistency. Nor did she accept other Dharma brothers’ advice. For example, she went to Japan to attend a puja recently. A Dharma brother kindly suggested that her husband and her take a longer trip as they had not had vacationed together for a long time. She refused by saying that a longer trip might cause her co-workers trouble. In retrospection, she realized that many things in life are really impermanent. Sometimes, she was self-righteous while making decisions, thinking that she was right. However, she was only being greedy, hateful, and ignorant. She, again, repented of her selfishness, self-righteousness, and ignorance about making offerings.

That Saturday, after she went to seek an audience with the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she returned to the ward at the hospital. She asked her husband if he knew what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said about him. He merely replied, “Being disobedient.” At hearing his reply, all she could do was gasp in admiration. How incredible His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is! In the past, she had heard that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could bestow blessings without being in the ward. That day, she witnessed that fact that her husband actually knew what His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had taught even though he had not gone to the Buddhist center with her!

According to her, had they acted in accordance with His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings, this incident would have never occurred. She felt ashamed of committing so much terrifying evil karma. Nonetheless, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still did not give up on them and continued to give his best to help them. She was truly ashamed of herself. She also hoped that her fellow Dharma brothers could listen to every word bestowed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during the puja and take it seriously by carrying it out and correcting themselves. Thereby, their future shall be benefited. She hoped that no merits of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be wasted on saving more disobedient and incapable disciples. She expressed her repentance once more and again thanked His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his compassionate rescue and guidance. Additionally, she thanked all the Dharma brothers who had cared for, looked after, and helped them substantially during the period of time.

Then, another female disciple expressed her verbal repentance towards His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for granting her an opportunity to show her repentance.

It had been 9 and half year since she sought refuge with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on April 28th, 2002. During that over 3500 days, the benevolent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche protected and blessed everyone around the clock. It was truly meticulous for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. As a disciple, she failed to act according to the teachings. During the past 9 and half years, she merely got older but did not get any wiser, thereby becoming a burden to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche constantly said that, if a disciple did not act according to the teachings and failed to do prostrations to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on a regular basis after he or she sought refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would ask the Dharma Protector Achi to single him or her out so that such a disicple could no longer hide. She thanked the Dharma Protector Achi to single her out, letting her lose the identification card issued to every disciple by the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center at the Nangang Exhibition Hall the day before the October 3rd puja. From then on, she could not enter the Buddhist center to listen to the Buddhist teachings, nor could she do volunteer work for the Buddhist center. She could not even attend this year’s (2011) Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgon Memorial Puja. She has not been allowed to attend pujas for a whole year as of today.

October 2, 2010, around 5:00 pm before her volunteer job in Nangang Exhibition Hall finished, a Dharma brother told her that she could request other Dharma brothers to get the dinner box for her. At that moment she was busy. Hearing that, she said: “Ok!”Then she thought to herself:“Im not hungry!” with another following thought: “But the dinner box cost NT$100!” Thereafter she put down what she was doing and took out the dinner ticket from her ID card. Then she put her ID card aside, thinking that she would never forget to take it. She continued with what she had been doing. After finishing her job, she happily went back to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to practice the ritual of Dharma Protector Achi. It was not until she went downstairs from the venue that she found she left her ID card in Nangang Exhibition Hall. She did forget to bring the ID card with her. She was so panicked, like an ant on a hot pan.

According to the rule in Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, one without an ID card is prohibited from entering the venue. From then on she could not attend the pujas held by Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. She waited for two weeks before she got the chance to seek audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Accompanying a believer, she stepped towards and knelt down before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed enlightenment to the believer, she tried to make an offering with the prepared money to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Before she spoke, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just strictly scolded her and said: “Go away!” Nor did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accept her offering. And she, under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing of scolding, came to be aware of her greediness and attachment. In Nangang Exhibition Hall she was busy with the work of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Even if she might starve, she should still have taken it as first priority the work related to Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. However, she was greedy for a dinner box and unwilling to sacrifice NT$100. What has she learned about Buddhist teachings for such a long time? All of the practice of generosity and making offering she had done were just fake! She is thankful for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s scolding. She also expressed her repentance and gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and said she would correct her faults. Besides, she prayed for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate blessing.

Two weeks later she, coming along with a believer, planned to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to bestow her an ID card. That was the regular Sunday puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, knowing the present people have heavy karma, particularly conducted the Green Tara Ritual and led the participants to recite the heart mantra of Green Tara, in order to reduce their karmic obstacle of Buddhist cultivation. During the puja, there was a female disciple who passed away in the Buddhist center. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately conducted the Phowa for the deceased female disciple to help her be reborn in the Pure Land. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, despite fatigue, continued to receive the believers who sought audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It was the moment she had been expecting. She went with her friend, who also sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, to beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to bestow an ID card upon her. She, with fear and trepidation, knelt down before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and waited.

After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche solved her friend’s problem, she was about to speak to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. However, before she spoke she just heard the severe scolding of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche:“You are so annoying!” At the moment her mind blanked out. She made an offering and left respectfully. She was thankful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for accepting her offering as well as scolding her again. She realized that she had thought herself too important and forgot to take Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as the first priority, which she had often talked about and thought that she could certainly do. She thought she could certainly follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings. There had been so many times that she thought, “certainly, I could,” but when circumstances came, she forgot this.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had worked hard all day since he conducted Green Tara practice and Dharmas, and continued to receive 28 believers on that day. There were still other believers queuing behind her. How fatigued was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? However, she ignored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s exhaustion and thought only about her own ID card. She did not see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s meticulous care nor did she put Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as the first priority. Who else could she care about? She made repentance to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche of her selfishness and disrespect to the guru.

From then on, she told herself not to be impatient, but just watch her own heart and correct her own mistakes first. She repented through making full prostration. As long as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received believers on Saturdays, she would go to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and kneel down to repent and wait for right causes and conditions. She thanks Dharma Protector Achi for letting her lose the identification card. It just made her see herself, who has taken refuge for 9 and a half years but had not made much progress. She was 61 years old and how many more 9-and-a-half-years could be wasted? She thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate teaching and blessing. During this year, she was outside the door of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s propagation and enlightenment. She had hearing loss. If she sat outside the glass door, she could distantly see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but could not hear sound. However, if she sat outside the red wooden door of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, she could not see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but could hear Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s sound of propagating Dharma, which was revealed out from the door crack. She realized that she violated the refuge precepts. Because she cannot see and hear clearly from the outside.

All of these were punishment to her. The guru would not be in the same place with her because she was outside the door. The guru would not teach her because she could not hear clearly. The guru did not share the food with her because she could not get the offering foods. The guru did not allow her to do good deeds because she could not make offerings. The guru would not talk to her because the guru said she was annoying and ordered her to go away. All these punishments she had were the effect but the cause is that she was not reverent to the guru, not keeping precepts, lazy, shameless, and making mistakes repeatedly. She said that she would definitely correct her mistakes. The disciple again repented to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and was grateful for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings.

She thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his compassion and not giving up any disciples. As to the grace given to disciples by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it cannot be entirely elaborated in 3 days and nights. At the puja of the beginning of this year (2011), while the offering foods were distributed and the empowerment was given, she saw and envied so much. She would really like to have. While seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche laboriously step down from the Dharma throne and in person give empowerment, as well as bestow blessings upon the disciples one by one in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, she really envied them so much. Seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s slim body, she told herself in her heart: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very tired and should go back to the Dharma throne quickly, and she did not need. Suddenly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stepped out the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and gave empowerment to all disciples outside the door one by one. At that moment, all of the disciples outside the door were so moved that they cried. Before she took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her character was so strong that she did not cry or admit to loss. After she took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s continous teaching and compassionate blessing, she cries often because of her repentance, gratitude, and from being moved.

On September 28th, she had a car accident. On the spot of accident she called “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!” Because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s protection, she paid back the heavy retribution with light suffering. As she rode, the handlebar was hit by a turning motorcycle and it turned 180 degrees. The disciple’s motorcycle was down but she was not down. The other motorcycle was down first and the biker was thrown as far as 10 meters. Fortunately, that biker was all right but just had some abrasions. The disciple went to the emergency room nearby. The initial diagnosis was that 3 fractures were in her wrist and arm. Then she went to another hospital, they suspected that there were complete fractures in her wrist and two places of greenstick fracture in her arm. In that evening, she went to the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic. When the doctor was evaluating the X-ray photo, a Dharma brother received a notice that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had enlightened: there was one place of complete fracture and two places of greenstick fracture. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is more accurate than doctors and sophisticated scientific instruments. That is so amazing! In addition, she healed very smoothly after getting injured. No surgical operation and no pain. She can even make a full prostration. That is all Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassionate blessings. She was so grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and feels so ashamed.

She was also very grateful for this accident, so she was able to reflect upon her attitude for making prostrations. After her first time finishing the one hundred and ten thousand full prostrations, she did it just for accumulation of numbers, for herself, completely without repentance heart. Even if there was, it was a mere formality. After completion of the one hundred and ten thousand time, she became lazy, making prostrations only occasionally. The second time, after losing her identification card, she began to prostrate again, grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, allowing her to prostate for repentance, for the sentient beings, for gratitude. The third time was recently when she was injured from the car accident at two o’clock in the afternoon. At eleven o’clock that night, she thought of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenments, “Do not be lazy, even if you only have one hand left, if you can prostrate, then you should.” Furthermore, recently her niece, after a heart surgery to install two intracoronary stents, her niece could make two hours of prostrations in the Buddhist Center just two weeks later. She had only one injured hand, therefore she should prostrate. When she bent down to prostrate, her inner repentance, gratitude and appreciation all swelled up, her face was covered in tears, and her hand did not hurt anymore. Her bruised knees hurt, but she endured the pain, made prostrations with feelings of gratitude, repentance and appreciation.

This made her deeply realize that if she does not make prostrations when she is still healthy, if she does not prostate with one hand left, should she wait until she had no legs, and then feel regret? Because of this accident, she once again experienced how lucky and fortunate she is, having Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, protection, and guidance all the time, and the complete healthy body her parents gave her. How could she be so ungrateful? Still being so selfish? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had transmitted the Dharma, but she did not do her best, and troubled Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She felt she was so evil, then again she made repentance and showed gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. That night, after she finished the full prostrations, she applied the Bao Yuan Gao on her bruised knee, the next morning the bruises all turned red and did not hurt anymore. It was very incredible and it was the first time she experienced the precious Bao Yuan Gao.

Today, she finally realized why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said,〝What does it have to do with me!〞 Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had transmitted the Dharma, continued to give teachings every day and also opened the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic, providing the best medicine without concern for the cost. In these ways, the guru had transmitted the Dharma, gave the disciples good health, the disciples still would not cultivate, not practice. Therefore, it had nothing to do with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

She was very grateful to Bodhisattvas’ arrangement, so she could take refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in this lifetime. She was grateful to the compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, granted her the three jewels. First, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped her to be filial and to repay her parents. In the year 1998 and1999, Rinpoche performed Chod Puja and Phowa for her parents and transferred their consciousness, so she had no more worries for her parents. Second, her two daughters were all taken care of and taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, so she did not have to worry about two daughters. Third, despite her evil karma from this life and past lives, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche closed her door to the evil path, opened the door to the Pure Land, and guided her toward the path to the Pure Land.

She deeply felt that the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist center are the most fortunate people in the world because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. She prayed that the sentient beings in the Six Realms could all have the cause and conditions, the blessings, help and teachings from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and therefore, they could be liberated from Samsara, and be reborn in the Pure Land.

After ascending the Dharma throne, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened all attendees on the following Buddhist teachings. In the previous pujas, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already taught everyone about “the Ultimate Truth”. Today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would summarize the teachings of “the Worldy Truth” and “the Ultimate Truth.” The reason why you would do something wrong was that you were careless and did not always observe and reflect upon your own words, behaviors, and thoughts. You used the experiences accumulated from past lives and this life to respond to everything around you. So your every thought is selfish and you would do evil deeds continuously. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had taught you to examine whether what you think, speak, and do violate Buddha Dharma every evening. If you had truly followed and practiced it, naturally your evil deeds would be gradually reduced. However, often when you are doing something wrong, you still find many self-righteous reasons to help rationalize your evil deed and why you would make the wrong decisions. If you use your own ideas to practice Buddhism, Buddha Dharma will not be useful to you and will not have any effect on you.

If you have received a salary from a company, when you are at work, you have to comply with the company’s rules. When doing their jobs, some people were often reprimanded; this was because they did not do things according to the company rules. As long as you are not following the company rules, you are doing evil deeds. Do not find excuses to explain your own behaviors. If you had not violated the company’s requirements at all and had done what your boss had asked you to do, how would you have been reprimanded or fired? Do not argue that the company has not stated and written the rules clearly or that you have not heard the rules. If you argue, it indicates that you do not admit your faults and think it is all other people’s faults. Those who do not admit their errors are those who do not want to improve themselves. Remember, any kind of errors is your own fault.

Why do we have quarrels in our family? Why do we have discord in the family? All of these were caused by the evil karma accumulated from our past lives and this life. In all of our lives, we were affected by the concept of “I” and did a lot of evil deeds; we used the mundane experience accumulated from our past lives and this life to judge all matters. Because we had the concept of “I”, it brought us many afflictions. Not only do lay practitioners have these kinds of problems, nowadays, ordained practitioners have a lot of worries as well. For example, in the Buddhist temples, they feel other people’s cultivations are worse than theirs; they feel other people’s followers are fewer than theirs; they feel other people’s recitations of Buddha’s name are not as good as theirs; they feel that other people have not been ordained as long as they have, and so on; so they look down on others. This kind of mindset will bring affliction to them.

At this time, a female disciple who had newly taken refuge, upon hearing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s words, kept looking towards the nuns in the puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who has excellent eyesight saw this, immediately asked her to stand up, and scolded her. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche talked about matters related to ordained practitioners, what made you qualified to despite them in your mind? Ordained practitioners at least show the appearance of renouncing worldly matters and practice pure Dharmas. They give up the life of an ordinary person for practicing Buddhism, which you cannot do; therefore, you should respect ordained practitioners. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed that this disciple would not be allowed to make offerings to the guru or to support the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center financially in the future; the guru also asked her to sit at the farthest back of the room right away. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said to the attendees that they did not believe Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has good eyesight. Although they knew Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has extraordinary ability, they did not know how extraordinary Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is. Although there were more than 1,200 people attending the puja today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could pinpoint in one glance this disciple who disrespectfully looked at the nuns.

Whether in China or Tibet, either in Mahayana or Vajrayana Buddhism, Buddhist practitioners cultivate Buddha Dharma to benefit themselves and others. As a practitioner first achieves the state of liberation from the cycle of birth and death, he then has the ability to help other sentient beings to do the same. Furthermore, he will be able to teach the Dharma methods that can help sentient beings to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. Even if sentient beings have not accumulated sufficient causes, conditions, and virtues to achieve Buddhahood in this lifetime, the practitioner who has cultivated in the Bodhisattvas’ path can know sentient beings’ causes. Thus, he can create conditions to help them to be reborn in the Pure Land.

The Buddha had taught 84,000 Dharma methods, which are all contained in the Worldly Truth and Ultimate Truth. Do not think that the more methods you practice, the better. Actually, each method enlightened by the Buddha is according to different people’s causes, conditions, and merits and exists to resolve people’s problems and afflictions. This is irrelevant to peoples’ cultural backgrounds. There is no such thing that one Dharma method is better than the other. Nor is one Dharma method more auspicious than the other. What one learns depends on one’s different causes and conditions. When the Buddha transmitted Buddha Dharma, the Buddha equally taught to all sentient beings in the Six Realms. That is, Buddha Dharma was taught not just to people in the Human Realm. The Dharmas taught in the Human Realms are methods that can be achieved by human beings.

The reason we were reborn as humans is due to the Karma resulted from our experiences in past lifetimes. These experiences were recorded in our consciousness. According to Buddhism, they were encoded in the Eighth Consciousness which is what you call sub-consciousness. In this lifetime when we receive all kinds of information from the external environemnt, the consciousness will begin to work and we continue to carry out virtuous or vicious deeds. With virtuous or vicious karma, we’ll continue the cycle of Samsara. Learning and practicing Buddhism are not for you to gain some understanding of a few sentences in sutras and then you attempt to teach others with it. Doing so is like if one practices Zen Buddhism, and took one or two sentences to discern the meaning of Buddha Dharma. Instead, it means that the practitioners are to completely implement Buddhisim in their daily life and correct all conduct that will cause them to fall into Samsara.

Master Gampopa englightened: “Therefore, before we can naturally resolve our attachment to the confusion of reality from the origin, we must realize that everything belongs to Worldy Truth. During this time, both the karma as causes and the karmic retributions as effects exist. Hence, profound faith in karma, causes and effects is, indeed, extremely important.” That is to say, before attaining any realization about Emptiness, you should consider that karma, causes, and effects are real, and you should deeply believe that everything is subject to the function of karma, causes, and effects. Those practitioners who have attained the realization of the Ultimate Truth and Emptiness, and have been confirmed in their attainment by their gurus, will not be affected by their Karmic retribution, because they understand that all are due to causes and conditions.

A practitioner who has attained the realization about Ultimate Truth is also the one who has attained the realization about Emptiness. For such a practitioner, karma, causes and effects are unreal, changeable, and not eternal. That is, his mind will not be influenced by karma, causes and effects and will not attach to the manifestations of karma, causes and effects, which are merely conditions. However, those who are still in the state of Worldly Truth have to deeply believe in karma, causes, and effects. Even those who have attained the state of the Ultimate Truth, should apply the Worldy Truth to let sentient beings understand the Karma, causes and effects of Buddhism. Additionally, they should incorporate Tantra to benefit sentient beings. Doing so is to apply both Emptiness and wisdom. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cultivates both the Worldly Truth and the Ultimate Truth.

The incident shared earlier by the disciple, who made her public repentance and lost her ID, isn’t a small matter. You should not regard it as a simple ID card and think it shouldn’t be a serious matter. The ID card is property of this Buddhist Center, thus losing it isn’t a small matter. If she doesn’t pay attention to such a matter, when she has a chance to be in charge of Dharma instruments of the Center, she may lose them as well. Some objects can’t be replaced with money. You shouldn’t say, “I have money so I can print another ID card to give to you.” You should know if you embezzle or damage the property of a Buddhist center, you will fall into hell after death. What kinds of objects belong to the center? You should know all the objects in the center were bought by the donations contributed by people, be it a small piece of paper or a large Buddha statue. Because the disciple was not hungry, but she couldn’t let go of a lunch box worth of 100 NTD, she lost the ID card. With such a greedy and stingy mind, how can she learn Buddhism? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to teach that Rinpoche had been waiting for this opportunity for a while, till she had a car accident and the bone of her arm was broken on one spot and lacerated on two spots. The car accident has redeemed the karmic retribution of falling into hell. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has waited till this time for her to a make public repentance. The vow of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the same as that of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The guru can’t bear to see or hear any sentient being who have taken refuge to fall into hell.

Upon hearing the above enlightenment, some may think “How can it be so serious? It shouldn’t matter if I do that!” People with such thoughts are those who don’t believe in karma, causes and effects. Every thought of any ordinary person is selfish, and it will give rise to karma. Doing virtuous or vicious deeds will definitely result in karma. Virtuous deeds will give rise to virtuous karma. Vicious deeds will result in vicious karma. A cause will surely lead to an effect. In this universe, the law of causes and effects is very subtle, but it definitely exists. Do not think that doing virtuous deeds can offset the effects of doing vicious deeds. As long as you don’t stop doing vicious deeds, you are accumulating vicious karma. Unless you keep doing the virtuous deeds to the extent that the virtuous power is much greater than the evil one, the virtuous power can slightly suppress the evil power.

You always think that after taking refuge, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will protect and bless you. Thus everything will change for the better and nothing bad will happen. This is incorrect. Our bodies are the manifestations of our karma; they include virtuous and evil karma accumulated in past lifetimes. The reason we are reborn as humans is because we are drawn by our Karma. With both virtuous and evil karma, we fall into the cycle of Samsara. Do not think that since you had attended the Ritual of the Emperor Liang Jewelled Repentance and recited the sutra in which it mentioned “karma can be eliminated,” your karma would be gone and you’d be fine. In fact, the influence of Karma would not disappear. For example, when you slap on someone, you may have already apologized or even you let the person slap you back, as long as the person still feels resentful, the evil karmic force will not disappear. It is not as simple as “an eye for an eye.” When you curse at people without using dirty words, as long as you harbor hatred, it is just like speaking harsh words.

There is an analogy in the sutra, if there is a barrel of seafood putting in a room for a long time, even if the seafood has been moved out, the smell of seafood will remain in the room for a long time. You have to continually clean up the room; the odor might be removed gradually. Human beings are affected by the power of karma just like the smell in the room, you have to continually cultivate yourself, then you have the possibility of removing or eliminating the effect of karma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked a disciple, who is the nurse, to share her experiences. She expressed that she served in a hospice, and if a patient with cancer passed away, there was a strong smell in the room, and it would take a week to eliminate the smell. Just as such a smell takes a long time to dissipate, how could you expect to immediately clean your karma which was accumulated in many lifetimes?  Therefore you must rely on the guru’s help; and the guru will use the severe method to help you.

Some people might think that they had taken refuge, attending the Chod Puja; their ancestors had been liberated, and their evil karma had been liberated, their karma had been eliminated by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing. They started to slack off. Master Jigten Sumgon mentioned before, when the illness of sentient beings was cured by the guru, that the illness would come back if one did not continue to make progress in cultivation. Moreover, it needs the tool to clean up the room, it is impossible to clean up only by your hands without tools. At least, you have to take a barrel of water and a mop to clean up the room, which was smudged by yourself. Making repentance, practicing charity and making offering are the tools which are bestowed by your guru. You can choose the tools, meanwhile you cannot do evil things anymore.

It is just like if you have 100 pieces of fish in the room; you cannot clean it up immediately, you have to move the fish out gradually. You had the help from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to move out one fish, then, remaining 99 pieces, but you carelessly committed another evil karma. Just like moving a fish back in the room, you were not careful of your body, speech and mind, thus you are moving another fish in, so there are 101 pieces of fish. The speed of creating evil karma is faster than eliminating the karma, therefore you must not commit any evil acts, and then it would be possible to clean them up. At the time of taking refuge, you are taught that you have to stop all evildoing and conduct all virtuous acts. It means that you should not commit any tiny evildoing, only do the pure virtuous acts, and then you can turn your karma for the better so as to change your karma retribution.

Next, Richen Dorjee Rinpoche revealed one of his secrets. In the last 20 years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not need fragrant soap to shower, or Cologne water, because there is no odor on his body. Even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is sweating, there is no odor at all. One of the reasons is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a vegetarian but the most important point is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been doing virtuous acts, therefore the karma has been eliminated. It is not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche likes to brag about himself. Instead, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, with his own implementation and experiences, tries to prove and testify whether the true states which were depicted in the sutra are achievable or not. When a practitioner has carried out pure virtuous acts, the body will have no odor. On the contrary, being the man that you are who has taken refuge, as well as being a vegetarian, if your sweat still smells, it means that you still have lots of karma, and you did not correct your body, speech and mind according to the teaching of Buddha Dharma.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche furthermore cited his family story as an example: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great-grandfather lived by sericulture and therefore acquired a heavy killing karma. From the generation of his great-grandfather to the generation of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, every male person in the family passed away at 50-odd years old because of high blood pressure or heart disease. One of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s sisters had cerebral meningitis in her childhood which was a fatal disease during that time. Although she survived, she had a lower intelligence after that. Many years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s brother had cerebellar hemangioma, and his sister had hemangioma. Since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s father passed away, from then on, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s eldest sister became a vegetarian, but she did not learn Buddhism. Recently she diagnosed with diabetes and the doctor suggested that she eat meat. Why is this so? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened you when you took refuge that the precept would give you support only after you have taken refuge. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s eldest sister did not learn Buddhism, so she was not able to continue to be a vegetarian. Even if she adopted vegetarian diet, she could not avoid her destiny.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to enlighten the reason why his eldest sister have diabetes. It was because she did not get her parents’ permission before getting married. When young people are still under their parents’ custody and they do not get permission to have sexual relations, they have violated the precepts of sexual misconduct. Later, they would have illness of the kidneys, or problems of the bladder or prostate. It was breaking the precepts and violating the Ten Meritorious Acts. Some people might say that young people nowadays mature too early. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that it is because that you gave children fast food. The meat products are mixed with somatotropin and hormones, which will make the children mature faster. Actually, you are harming your children.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had attained the level of Rinpoche, so he had liberated all of his ancestors, and took care of the ancestors’ karma, however the remaining influence of karma still existed. None of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s siblings learned Buddhism, so they continued to have troubles. Form the point of view of ordinary people, they are good people without committing evil since two of them were public officials, they never took any small bribes, nor drink a cup of tea which was paid for by others. But only two of his siblings were not divorced. If they had trouble, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help them certainly, because they must have a karmic connection to become the same family members who owed debts to one another and had common karma in their previous lives. They might have learned Buddhism in their previous lives, but they forgot it in this life. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could help them now. But if they do not learn Buddhism, after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche passes away, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not able to help them. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cannot be sure that they would not fall into the Three Evil Realms. Even Buddha Sakyamuni, who had attained Buddhahood, could not help his clan members to fend off their enemies, or change the Karmic retribution of extinction because of their disbelief in Buddhism.

Earlier, a disciple had spoken of her husband’s stroke. You all thought that the disciple who had a stroke was passionate about helping the Buddhist center. He was a volunteer and eager to do the photographic work for the Buddhist center. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company needed someone to take photos, he stepped out immediately for the job. Why did his cerebral blood vessels break? It was because he was disobedient. He still practiced Buddhism based on his own ideas, thinking that he has accumulated virtues by being a volunteer. He thought that he did not have to continue making full prostrations since he had done 110,000 already. Besides, he was reluctant to make offerings. Therefore, metaphorically speaking, he failed to clean his room continuously. That was why he could not turn his karma around. He might think that, as he had volunteered and done a lot, he would have virtues. He had had a stroke 10 years ago and half of his body was paralyzed. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saved him when he had his first stroke, but this was the second time. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said that he would be saved only once. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can help you, but just like the saying goes, “The hand of charity is extended to alleviate emergency rather than poverty.” You will only be helped once to suppress your negative karma. However, even the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru cannot transform your karma. Who can do that? Only you can do it! Fortunately, on the day he fell ill, he knew that he should repent while he was throwing up. Because of his repentance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave blessings to him and said that he could escape death this time but would have to suffer to a certain extent.

Do not think that your daily meditation practice is learning Buddhism. Neither should you consider yourself learned in Buddhism simply because you have made prostrations in repentance. The female disciple who made her repentance also finished the 110,000 full prostrations. However, her attitude was wrong. She failed to do the prostrations on behalf of the sentient beings. Without doing the prostrations with repentance, mercy, and compassion, the 110,000 prostrations are merely exercises. However, what she did was better than nothing. Later, she had the opportunity to have a car accident so as to repay her debts with her broken arm. Why are you taught to have reverence while praying to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas? The guru, the Buddhas, and Bodhisattva do not need your reverence. Nonetheless, as you are reverent without thinking about any other thing, your pure mind will be revealed naturally. Then, the guru’s power of compassion realized in Emptiness will manifest to help you out.

In fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was able to know his condition and bestow blessings upon him without looking at the the picture of the disciple who had a stroke. When a guru has to rely on the picture, it indicates the fact that he is not really capable. Sometimes, when believers come to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche regarding their family and friends, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would know about their conditions simply with their names and animal sign. Why isn’t a picture necessary? It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has realized mercy and compassion in Emptiness and does not differentiate himself and others. According to the Buddhist scripture, one’s mind should not dwell anywhere in order to attain enlightenment. Then, why is the animal sign needed? It is because there are many people sharing the same name, however, the person can be found as long as his or her animal sign is indicated. It is not necessary that believers give information about their family and friends such as their birthdays or time of birth.

In fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not even know what the disciple who had a stroke looks like. In the past, when he had his first stroke, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped him. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not remember. After helping the sentient beings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche usually does not remember who was helped. This is because the nature of the three chakras is empty. The empty nature of the three chakras does not refer to the lack of receivers, objects, and givers while practicing generosity. If that were the case, it would have been said that the forms of the three chakras were empty. The empty nature of the three chakras is related to the Tantra and will not be explained any further today. Most important of all, one should practice generosity with mercy and compassion realized in Emptiness. Why aren’t the sentient beings who were helped remembered? It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has realized mercy and compassion in Emptiness. Therefore, even though Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not even know the look of the disciple who had a stroke, with his mercy and compassion realized in Emptiness, he can naturally help.

The disciple who had a stroke was not obedient and was reluctant to make offerings. Why did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still help him? Even though he had been enthusiastic in helping the Buddhist centers and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company, what he had done did not really matter. What mattered most was the fact that he aroused repentance before he fell unconscious. His wife just said that he, after throwing up into the toilet, expressed his repentance towards His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in front of the toilet. Humorously, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the disciple was not repenting to the guru but to a toilet. Since when has the guru become a toilet?

During the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked a disciple who is also a doctor. With his tens of years of experiences in the medical field, what consequence does a patient with a stroke like the disciple usually have? The doctor replied that he had consulted with neurologists that day. They all felt that it was impossible to save the patient and planned to set him away. In other words, from the doctor’s perspective, the disciple was about to die. Even though he had been resuscitated, he would have been a vegetable with tubes inserted all throughout his body. However, the disciple, who had had a Glasgow Coma Scale of 3 while being admitted to the hospital in the morning, had a higher GCS of 6 or 7 that night. It was beyond imagination as well as a miracle. Then, the doctor disciple said, “His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche truly has extraordinary capabilities. It is very amazing. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is truly the great king of medicine.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche modestly said, “The Buddha himself is the real king of medicine. All Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does is take actions in accordance with Buddhist teachings.” The doctor then said, “In the hearts of the disciples, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is no different from the Buddha.”

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that everyone should be grateful for the teachings passed on by the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the lineage gurus. It is hard to say whether you are lucky or not, for you have met with such a strict guru. Nowadays, many people know that the teaching style in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center is very strict. This is the ancient teaching style in Tibet, the tradition and the lineage. Whatever Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche says and does is conducted according to the teachings bestowed by the Buddhas and the gurus. Some people cannot accept the strict traditional teachings that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestows. If you cannot tolerate being taught in this way, you may leave. However, do not criticize when you leave.

You have read many stories from Buddhist sutras regarding how the Buddha liberates sentient beings. You may think they are myths but they are not myths. There is no fiction written in Buddhist sutras. You may feel that they are fairy tales because you have not attained this state. As for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who has attained the achievement, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not feel they are magical. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told you with the examples of his own experiences of Buddhist cultivation. Do not have doubt but act according to the guru’s teachings, and you will gradually comprehend Buddhist doctrines. Buddha Dharma will not be comprehended merely by reading Buddhist sutras. When you try to comprehend Buddha Dharma, you merely try to analyze it with your own human life experience. Without truly practicing the Buddha’s teachings, you will never realize the true meaning. No matter what, you don’t have to accept Buddhist teaching, but never doubt it. The karmic retribution of doubting Buddhism is very serious. Those who have doubts will fall into the Animal Realm. After many lives, they then would have the opportunity to come back as humans; however, they would have a disability like being deaf, mute, or mentally handicapped.

Buddhism was flourishing in the Tang Dynasty of Chinese history. Due to that the monarchs respected Buddhism, the country was very rich and powerful. Later, a monarch disrespected Buddhism, and the country also started declining.

The practitioner of the Ultimate Truth is able to see the causes of sentient beings and change their effects. In one of the Buddha Sakyamuni’s lives before attaining Buddhahood, he rode a boat with 500 rich people. The boatman, being covetous of their possessions, planned to sink the boat and rob their belongings. Through supernatural power, Buddha Sakyamuni knew about this so he killed the boatman. Killing people is committing a heavy crime. However, Buddha Sakyamuni foresaw that the 500 people would attain arhats in the future and be able to benefit many people. And the crime the boatman might have committed by killing arhats would be very heavy, which would lead to falling into unremitting hell. Therefore Buddha Sakyamuni could not bear to see the boatman committing such heavy karma, so he’d rather kill the boatman. As for you, you should not learn the way of the Buddha Sakyamuni. You should not say that you know your husband will kill you so you kill him first as though you are a future Buddha. Buddha Sakyamuni at that time was already a Bodhisattva who could see the cause and effect therein. You cannot do this.

Nowadays there are many Dharma propagators who merely emphasize their supernatural ability of solving problems for their disciples and believers, such as healing diseases. But they do not teach people to believe in karma, cause, and effect. Nor do they teach the Dharma method of liberation from Samsara. If you meet that kind of Dharma propagator, you should leave immediately. Without the belief in karma, cause, and effect, what people cultivate is not Buddhism but witchcraft. Some ordained people cannot teach the Ultimate Truth as they have not attained it themselves. They merely encourage people to donate money and practice generosity to accumulate merits and hope that things would turn better. Many believers also think it is good to be praised for donating money, or even donating houses. But why do the ordained people need so many houses?

Don’t think that by donating money monthly and releasing buckets of living fish into the ocean you are practicing virtue. Practicing virtue is the basic root of a human being. However, charitable acts are not necessarily Buddha Dharma. Non-Buddhist religions also carry out charitable acts and those are not related to Buddha Dharma. As a human being, one has to practice good deeds. You may ask as some people are too poor to live, isn’t it good for us to donate money and help them? I’m not saying it is not good. You can help them for a while. However, as they have not yet repaid their karmic retribution of being poor, they would continue to suffer in the next life. The Buddhist teachings provide the method of getting liberation from Samsara. If all sentient beings attain liberation, no more karma will be crated in the world and no more bad things will happen. Buddhism solves problems fundamentally, rather than settling on temporary solutions.

There is a foundation where they ask people to donate money and then they take the donation to build hospitals. They also encourage the doctors to show kindness and accept a lower salary. However the patients still have to pay. Then, who gets the revenue of the hospital? No one knows. Since the hospital is built with the donation from the public, the ordained people should not be charged for seeing doctors there. Why do they still charge the ordained people who go to see the doctor? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche founded Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic. The ordained people, whether they have taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche or not, do not need to pay to see a doctor. Some people may explain that the foundation needs to charge people in order to maintain the operation. However, if they can’t take a loss, they should not have established the hospital from the beginning. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not run the clinic for making money and, even from the very beginning, he did not mind even if he lost money in running the clinic. The main purpose is to help the ill. The doctors who work for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s clinic are all paid with at least a reasonable salary rather than being volunteers.

Currently, there is an organization advising people to donate bodies after death. They say it is for the deceased’s sake and the deceased would then have virtues. But it has never been mentioned in Buddha Sutras that people should donate their bodies. In view Buddhism, whether the deceased agrees to donate before death or the deceased’s relatives decide to donate, it is not proper. Even if the deceased promise before death, they may change their mind because of a thought after death. Sentient beings are most attached to their bodies. Everything you do is for your body. Whether you eat, sleep, or work, that is all because you value your body and love your body to death. The so-called “body-clinging ghost”  in Buddha Dharma is that they still have attachment to their bodies after death. They guard their bodies and are unwilling to leave. Why are there so many ghosts in cemeteries? It is not that people will become ghosts after death. Because they are reluctant to let their body go, they are unwilling to leave and always wander at the place where their bodies are buried. Especially, in the first 8 hours after death, the deceased would suffer in pain if someone touches their bodies.

Once, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted Phowa for the deceased and saw the deceased aroused to anger merely because her leg was moved by a doctor. Moving the body could make the deceased angry, not to mention taking the organs away such as removing the eyes. Rousing anger could result in the person falling into hell. Besides, it is not good for the people who perform the operation. If the deceased has a great and pure mind, practicing generosity to offer his body, then it would be good for the deceased to do so. In Chod Puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche visualizes his body becoming nectar for sentient beings to eat, so that the sentient beings have the conditions to get the help of Buddha Dharma. A practitioner on the Bodhisattva path does not consider himself at all but wholeheartedly benefits sentient beings. If you don’t have the ability to compel the deceased to let go of his attachment to his body, especially those who die by accident or did not cultivate Buddhism in this lifetime, you should not encourage him to donate his body. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not criticizing the organization but just giving you the enlightenment according to current circumstances.

What is the retribution of the breakage of a blood vessel in a brain? He would not be able to make prostrations or recite Buddha’s name for the rest of his life. Saving this disciple is not for him to enjoy family happiness, instead it is to give him an opportunity to learn Buddha Dharma, to recite Buddha’s name, and to make prostrations to Buddha. Every guru would exhaust his strength to help sentient beings to have enough time to learn Buddha Dharma and hence escape from the suffering ocean of Samsara. The disciple, who said that she almost became a widow, continued crying for her husband’s life. Cry for what? You are destined to be a widow! All couples are destined to be apart for life. Either you would become a widow, or your husband would become a widower. Why didn’t you cry in gratitude that your husband has the opportunity to recite Buddha’s name in the future?

A doctor disciple had SARS years ago. Because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, he not only recovered but also had no sequelae. He, as a doctor, clearly knows that if one is infected by SARS and does not die eventually, there would be the sequelae such as cardio problem or pulmonary fibrosis. In order to nurse his body back to health, much money could have been spent on nutritious foods, nursing attendants, etc… But that disciple had none of those sequelae after cured. His living is similar with ordinary people. But he did not thank the guru and was reluctant to make offerings. He loves investing but whatever funds he bought were badly lost. Although he sold a house through the real estate division of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company and earned some money, he immediately bought another house on his own. He was trapped in this deal. What does it mean? It means that he should not have this money in this life. This disciple was supposed to die originally and, therefore, would not own that money. He did not think that his life was saved by the guru and if it were not the guru, he would not have enjoyed time and material comfort now. He does not think about the guru’s grace to him at all and does not think about making offerings to the guru. Now, even if he wanted to buy something from the Glorious Jewel Group, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not sell to him.

Many people are like this. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saves their lives, they were grateful. When it comes to money everything was forgotten. If it were not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help, they would not be cured no matter how much money they spent. Wouldn’t the money still be gone? But you all do not think like this! You always think: I earn the money and I want to enjoy good times. The result is so wondrous that money is suddenly gone while you are reluctant to make an offering. Maybe you lose an investment, or spend money because of illness. If you were willing to make an offering, things may be different. For example, your disease may not be cured, but there must be something good in the future. That is not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche demands money. Once, a disciple had brought 20 million NTD in cash to make an offering, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche rejected it five times repeatedly because the disciple had the wrong attitude. Have you ever heard such a thing in other places?

You should not expect that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have sympathy for you and must help you solve the problem when you are ill. It is depicted in the “Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas” that as a Buddha’s disciple, if you are sick, you should think that you suffer for the sake of sentient beings and thereby you will relieve their sufferings. Actually, you are one of these sentient beings. While you are ill and suffer on behalf of sentient beings, your disease will naturally have less impact upon you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had enlightened that a practitioner should turn the sickness into a tool for one’s Buddhist practice. When you are ill, you should pray to have more severe illness so that you can suffer for all sentient beings. Consequently, you will pay back more debts.

Buddhism talks about past, present and future. The reason that you encounter problems now is that in the past you did not do good deeds or accumulate virtues. Learning Buddhism is to liberate life and death, not for the peace and happiness of a few short decades in this life. Buddhism is not for you to enjoy good times now, but to help you in the next life. While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had cancer in the past, he did not tell His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang but just accepted it all. He did not receive any treatment and did not think about living with the disease. He thought that he would naturally be happy after paying back karmic debts. As a result, the disease was cured. You should not think that you can also do that. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had done so many virtuous deeds before he had the disease, so he could be cured.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had skin cancer, severe spinal scoliosis, cervical subluxation but he has never feared. Why? Because he knows that all current retribution is due to the evil deeds he had done. It is a bargain to pay back with our bodies. It is okay if you have a brief illness, because you could consider it as payback for your debts. Even if you had cancer now, it is fine. Maybe after having cancer, your causes of falling to the Three Evil Realms will be eliminated. The present physical sickness, compared with sufferings in the Hell Realm, is really nothing. You really have no idea how painful it is in hell. As for the male disciple who had the stroke a few days ago, if he becomes better for a while, you can ask him if it is suffering. While the disciple was vomiting, was he afraid? He was definitely afraid of death! Instead of fearing death, he feared where he would go and what it could be like. Once he felt suffering, he repented; and thereby, the guru could bestow blessing upon him.

You never feel regret until you encounter your own death. Like the disciple who had a stroke, he did not repent until the final and most difficult moment. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often says that ghosts are easier to help because ghosts have already known suffering. As a result, whatever Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche says, they could listen and can be helped. You all are enjoying good times so you do not listen. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche talks to you, like the other ordained people, with soft voice and praise, you would easily forget soon afterward. So, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often scolds you. After scolding, you would have a shock and think, “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolds me.” Then, you would clearly remember in your subconscious. Even though you may not practice well in this life, you know the sufferings after falling to the Three Evil Realms and you would suddenly remember that “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had scolded me” in your subconscious. When this sentence comes to your heart, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing will appear.

Master Gampopa enlightened〝Therefore, we should carefully introspect ourselves: Have I actually achieved the state of the Ultimate Truth, or still stuck in the illusion of the Worldly Truth? Even if we have achieved the state of Ultimate Truth, we should still cultivate compassion towards sentient beings, and try to bring greater benefits to the mother-like sentient beings.” The greater benefit is to help them be liberated from birth and death, so that they will attain the everlasting happiness. So, the practitioners should take a good look at themselves to see if they are still in the state of Worldly Truth, or if they had achieved the state of Ultimate Truth. But no matter what, even a practitioner who had achieved the state of Ultimate Truth, would give the sentient beings help when one sees the sentient beings are about to fall into the suffering sea of Samsara, and give the very best of oneself to the sentient beings. This is also the cultivation of a merciful and compassionate heart.

When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche foresees that the disciples would have a bad future, he would definitely try all methods to give them help, maybe to hit, maybe scold, maybe instruct them to do certain things so that they can accumulate virtues, and have a chance to change their future. Master Gampopa further enlightened〝Therefore, we should not distinguish the two truths, but combine the two and cultivate truly and diligently. 〞For the practitioners who achieved the state of the Ultimate Truth, also should cultivate the Worldly Truth and Ultimate Truth at the same time; dual practices means they are cultivated both together.  When one cultivates both of these together, one can arouse the compassion of the Emptiness to benefit sentient beings. Master Gampopa enlightened〝Besides this, there is no other profound method.〞 The Dharma method, which combines the two truths, encompasses all of the methods enlightened by the Buddha. No Buddhist teachings and cultivation should stray from these two truths. The word〝profound〞does not mean abstruse, but means the most important foundation.

Once when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted a retreat in India, it was about April or May that year, it was the hot summer. The retreat hut was facing the west sunshine, in the afternoon and the temperature inside was about 40 c to 45 c degrees. The windows could not be opened during the retreat, there was not a curtain to block the sunshine, there was no electric fan in the room, of course no air conditioning. Even when the clothes were taken off, one’s whole body was still sweaty. During the retreat, the shower was prohibited. At most, people were permitted just put a few drops of water on the head, and it was so hot the retreat almost could not continue. At this moment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had one thought rise up〝It is already so hot in here, then how much more are those sentient beings suffering in the Fire Hell?〞Because of his compassionate vow, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always been very caring towards the sentient beings in the Hell Realms. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche visualized himself suffering for the sentient beings in the Fire Hell. Although the sunshine was still shining into the retreat room, the sky did not turn dark or contain dark clouds, but suddenly, Rinpoche felt his whole body was cooled with not even a drop of sweat. Even the inside of the retreat room turned and became cool, and it was like that for days.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was willing to suffer for the sentient beings, so that a marvelous thing could happen. Truly, “One’s mind can change one’s environment.” Some may think that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not really change the environment and he did not feel the heat because of self-hypnosis. It was not hypnosis, hypnosis would make people go to sleep. In Zen meditation one must not fall asleep, because falling asleep is a very heavy sin. Moreover, this is not the only day it became cool; June was the hottest month in India, so it should get hotter and hotter day by day. If it was hypnosis, the effect would not have lasted for so many days.

Many people may wonder, how could the mind have such a big influence? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often gave this example: There are 1,200 people in the venue, everyone has different home decorations and arrangements, why? Because it was all from your mind. The power of the mind, when it is small, will change the external environment, but when it is big it would affect everything in the entire universe. We do not have the capacity to affect the entire universe, but at least we could start from individuals. When you yourself is changed, you can affect people around you and your families. Gradually, you can affect more people.

Why do we say the mind could change the environment? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had large spine scoliosis, so why wouldn’t it affect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? Because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind could control the consciousness, and not let the consciousness control the mind. The last week, why did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche say that only by perfecting the good roots, one can attain the nature of Emptiness? Roots here do not refer to virtuous roots or evil roots, but instead they refer to our six roots: Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and consciousness. Normally, our six roots affect our minds. On the contrary, in Vajrayana Buddhism, we use our minds to control our consciousness; then, we make use of the six roots as tools for our Buddhist cultivation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had the problem of a slide cervical spine and a large spinal scoliosis. Wouldn’t you say this would hurt? But, you could not tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had such a serious medical condition because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had cultivated to separate the mind and consciousness, in which, the mind controls the consciousness. Therefore, the physical illness and pain would not affect the mind.

Everyone knows a Zen story. The Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng met two ordained people who were debating. One said〝The wind blows then the flag moved〞while the other one said〝The flag move along with the wind.〞The Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng said〝The benevolents, it is your hearts that are moving.〞This story has a very profound meaning; it is a very high level of Zen meaning and these were not the usual Zen phrases. Simply said, it is telling us that all things are the function of our minds. Therefore, there is the saying, “The mind alone creates all phenomena.”

One of the disciples who went to Tibet on this trip had bone cancer, and the cancer had spread to the bone marrow. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had told the disciples in advance in Cheng-du, Sichuan, that he would not bestow blessings on anyone during the trip. If anyone died on the high plateau, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would perform Phowa for him or her. Upon hearing the enlightenment, this disciple aroused deep faith and climbed up to the Drikung Thil Monastery without crutches because she did not care so much about her physical pain anymore. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not made such an announcement first, you can imagine that everyone would line up to receive blessings. This was a clever use of psychology by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Today’s teaching is very important for your Buddhist practice. In fact, everything lies in one’s way of thinking. Today, you fear for tomorrow; tomorrow, you fear for the day after that; the day after that, you fear for the next day. Every day you live in fear and fright. You should hurry and learn Buddhism while you can recite mantras, make prostrations, and while you have a guru to teach you. If you want to learn Buddhism, you must make up your mind and take advantage of the time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still alive. Do not think that you can wait until later. Why does Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche warn you to practice Buddhism right away? Because it will be too late sometimes if you slack off since you do not know when the Karmic retribution will manifest.

It is said in the Dharma text that our attitude in learning Buddhism should be the same as the girl who tries anxiously and rapidly to extinguish the fire in her hair. You should make a fierce determination to follow the Buddhist teachings and implement Buddhism in your daily life, so that you can understand the true meaning of Buddhism and change your karma and your next life. You don’t know if you will have the causes and conditions to meet another guru in your next life. But, it will be very difficult to encounter such a guru as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who disregards any gain or his own life in order to help you. You should cherish the time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is alive and practice wholeheartedly.

However, do not except to be a Rinpoche after you learn Buddhism. Never think that it is incredible to be a Rinpoche just because you see many people prostrate to him. A Rincpoche must endure what human beings cannot endure. “Rinpoche” is only a title, and Rinchen Dorjee Rincpoche’s real job is to liberate sentient beings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche operates 24 hours a day, longer than a convenience store. You think of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche even when you are asleep, or when you are in trouble. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is one hundred percent Rinpoche, and never rests. Furthermore, learning Buddhism, you do not have to ask or think, “When will I attain enlightenment?” As long as you follow and practice according to the guru’s teaching, gradually being permeated by Buddhism, you will get it someday. Vajrayana Buddhism can help your Buddhist practice in this life if you have a determined mind. Buddhist practice will not interfere with your life and work. The Dharma ceremony then came to an end.

Today’s puja came to a perfect completion. While some attendees left the Buddhist center, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpochen continued to receive 21 believers who came to implore for help. Although it had been many hours, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, despite fatigue, compassionately gave enlightenment and blessings to relieve their suffering and sorrow until 5:40 p.m.
