Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

October 3, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the annual auspicious “Drikung Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism’s Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses” at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall. This was the sixth time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has presided the Great Puja and it was the first time the puja was held at this site. Attendees have increased up to 20000, including believers particularly traveled from Japan, Hong Kong, Holland, France, India, New Zealand, Australia, the U.S., Britain, Canada, the Philippines, Brazil, and so forth. Under the witness of a lawyer, an accountant, and bank representatives, after the perfect completion of the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has donated all the offerings from attendees, around 6 million NTD, to the Ministry of Interior for charitable and social welfare services. After the perfect completion of the performing dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche furthermore went around the venue by standing on the Electric Ground Vehicle to give blessings upon all the attendees and cleanse them with nectar, purifying their body, speech, and mind. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche spent 40 minutes long to give blessings and, during such a long period, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche unceasingly sprinkled the pure and clean nectar over the long-awaiting participants with an auspicious hand-held grass bundle, which was heavy-loaded with nectar, fulfilling all participants’ wish without caring of his own body load. It was very moving and solemn scene.

The puja punctually started at 8:30 AM. With the escort of prayer flags and banners, music instruments, an incense burner, and eight offering girls, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, in an electric car, arrived at the venue through the immense exhibition hall and ascended to the mandala. After reverently making prostrations to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as offering a hada to the throne of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang to pay homage, and lighting lamps, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended to the throne and bestowed the following enlightenments.

The dharma the will be performed today was the Indiscriminate Amitabha Great Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses. Generally speaking, there are two kinds of practices in Buddhism: the Exoteric Buddhism and Vajrayana. For the Exoteric Buddhism, practitioners begin their practices from the causal ground, whereas in Vajrayana, practitioners begin their practices from the resultant ground.

The Dharma of the Indiscriminate Amitabha Great Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses was personally transmitted to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche from the 37th His Holiness Drikung Kagyu Kyabgon Chetsang. It is a terma which is a special dharma in Vajrayana. Usually, a terma would be directly transmitted to a practitioner by a Yidam. Amitabha is a honorable Buddha with great vows introduced by the Sakyamuni Buddha. In Amitabha Sutra, Sukhavativyuha Sutra, and Vipasyana Sukhavativyuha Sutra, the Sakyamuni Buddha had an introduction of Amitabha Buddha and the ways of being reborn in the pure land. These, however, are ways of self practices, which can only help self to be reborn in the pure land. In these three sutras, there is no description as of how to help others to be reborn in pure land. The Dharma of the Indiscriminate Amitabha Great Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses is the one Guru Padmasambhava personally went to the pure land of Amitabha Buddha, was taught by Amitabha Buddha and then brought back to the mundane world.

In Tibetan Buddhism, it will take a series of gradual and strict practices to learn this dharma. In Drikung Kagyu Lineage, to practice dharma methods of Vajrayana, or so-called the Esoteric Buddhism, one has to cultivate the foundation in the Exoteric Buddhism. In other words, one must have clear knowledge in sutras and shastra and one’s guru will decide whether to transmit dharma in Vajrayana. And then one has to complete the Four Uncommon Preliminary Practices, which is exclusively practiced in Vajrayana. The Four Uncommon Preliminary Practices include 100 thousand times of making full prostrations, which you might have seen Tibetans do such full prostrations on the ground. And then one has to recite 100 thousand times of the long mantra of Vajrasattva, which comprises of 100 syllables. After completing these practices, one then should make 100 thousand times of mandala offerings, which is to cultivate one’s mind of making offerings. Finally, one would practice 100 thousand times of Four-Session Guru Yoga.

After completion of the Four Uncommon Preliminary Practices, your guru will teach you the method of practicing Yidam, which requires you to perform a retreat first. If you practice the dharma of Avalokitesvara, you have to recite the mantra of Avalokitesvara, the mani mantra, for one million times during the retreat. In addition you have to attain the correspondence with the Yidam and the accomplishment should be confirmed by your guru. For those who practice the Dharma of the Indiscriminate Amitabha Great Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses, they have to receive the empowerment of Amitabha Buddha and recite one million times of Amitabha’s mantra while performing a retreat. Later, they have to learn the Phowa Dharma and after attaining the achievement of the Phowa Dharma, one can proceed to learn the Dharma of the Indiscriminate Amitabha Great Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses.

Why makes it so troublesome to learn the Dharma of the Indiscriminate Amitabha Great Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses? For instance, if you want to travel from Taipei to Kaoxiong and ask someone for direction, some may suggest you take an airplane or a train. More knowledgeable one would tell you where the train station is located. Even better, one would personally show you the way and see you off at the station. The best is the one who is capable to pay for your ticket and bring you to the destination in person. When someone says practicing Pure Land Buddhism is good because it can help you to be reborn in the pure land, this is like telling you what kind of transportation can be at your disposal. Those who have been reciting Amitabha’s mantra are those who can tell you the direction to the station. Those who are certain they can be reborn in the pure land are like people can bring you to the station in person. Finally, a practitioner in Vajrayana who has been to the pure land, who is certain he can break off the cycle of birth and death, who can be reborn in the pure land would be qualified to bring you to the Western Blissful World from this mundane world.

The abovementioned is about the perquisites for the dharma and its practitioner. Following is the importance of the attendees’ heart and motive. For each grand puja Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has held, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reached the rules that every sentient being is equal. Namely it means that no matter what your status is, how rich or poor you are, in what social position, all can attend this puja. Before the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, all sentient beings are equal. The Great Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses today is indiscriminate. There is no publication of sponsor naming, nor sending in advance invitation cards to government officials or celebrities. This is just because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche acts in accord with conditions, with you sentient beings’ conditions.

The practitioner conducts dharma with an indiscriminate heart. As for the attendees, first, you ought to have the reverent heart. According to the Buddhist Sutras, one ought to respect the Three Jewels. Being reverent is a sort of offering, by which your merits would be accumulated and then you can hear Buddhism and obtain help of Buddha-dharma. In Vajrayana it emphasizes to regard the practitioner as the same as the Yidam without duality or distinction. If you view the practitioner as Buddha Amitabha, you will obtain Buddha Amitabha’s blessings; if you view the practitioner as an ordinary, you will obtain an ordinary’s blessings.

Second, you ought to have the repentant heart. Since beginningless time, sentient beings of the six realms have been reincarnated in the suffering ocean. What they have always carried is nothing but karma, including virtuous and evil ones. Do not think doing small evil doesn’t matter and don’t be unwilling to practice small virtues. Of one life of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, his mother liked to eat turtle’s eggs and which led her to falling into hells after death. In this life for that you have eaten eat, hurt sentient beings and all sorts of evil thoughts of greed, hatred, ignorance arisen in you, you have to make repentance. Repentance could be divided into two aspects: one is to confess and the other is to regret. Confession means that being aware of one’s faults, he accepts, faces and is responsible for all the consequences. Regret refers to that one will never commit the same mistakes after being aware of them.

Third, you should not have the disturbed heart when attending the puja. One of the Six Paramitas is vigorousness and that means being concentrated on the dharma. Later during the rituals, do not think about your pending personal businesses and being impatient by wondering how long the puja would last. For Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, there is nothing more important than attending puja. If the one whom you have the appointment with could not wait for you, or cancel something due to your nonattendance, it is not because your presence in the puja but for the one has been insincere. You can take this chance to test if your partner is sincere to you. Cultivating Buddhism and attending pujas will not stop you from having a couple, nor make you lose your job or money. As these should be your own affairs. The reason why you ought to attend the entire course is that one could not perfectly complete a thing by half done. There were two people who asked someone to tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that they would like to attend the puja but merely for 30 minutes, as they had a tight schedule so they had to deal with other affairs. Hearing that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told they needn’t to come, for if they were here in the puja venue, they would get up to leave after a while, by which would distract other attendees from the puja. If you can attentively attend the puja, the merits and conditions you gain today will be of much help for your future.

Forth, you ought to have the compassionate heart. Today there are still many beings that do not possess the merits and conditions to attend this puja. You ought to be sympathetic for them. When you are in the puja, no matter what you are coming for, you shall wish that, by this dharma chance, may all sentient beings have the opportunity to learn and cultivate Buddhist teachings and obtain liberation from the cycle of birth and death in the future.

Last, no arrogant heart should be harbored. If you come to the puja with a curious heart today, that is the arrogant heart you have. If you say that you are pushed to attend by your mother, husband, wife, or your friends, that is also the arrogant heart of you. Also, do not regard as the practitioner can do it, you can do it. After many preparations made does Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dare to face twenty thousand people here. In the Esoteric Buddhist pujas there are often some attendees who motion and make hand gestures. However, all these behaviors are abnormal. Making hand gestures do not represent that one is learning tantric practices but just signals. And attendees ought to have the five kinds of hearts so as to benefit myriad sentient beings.

Originally in Tibet it takes one day long to conduct the Great Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciounesses. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that nowadays, in commercial society, everyone is very busy with many businesses to deal with even on Sunday. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche takes the hardship and condenses the conduction time to half a day. It is not saying that some of the contents are skipped. Actually, it is through Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s strength of meditation and concentration, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche speeds up to lessen the time of conduction. You ought to be patient.

It is very uneasy to organize such a great puja. Without need for public advertisement, there are twenty-thousand attendees participating the Great Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciounesses this time. It is really extremely rare. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche believes in “karmic connection.” Over eight-hundred years ago, Jigten Sumgon, the founder of Drikung Kagyu, had 180,000 ordained disciples. In Tibet, an area where the traffic is inconvenient and information system is undeveloped, those disciples came out on account of karmic connection. And today, for that you are able to attend this great puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can be sure that you definitely ever recited Buddha Amitabha’s names and contacted Vajrayana in your past life. Otherwise, you would not have attended the Vajrayana puja. What we are talking about to cherish merits and conditions means that as one has the opportunity of listening to orthodox dharma, he ought to extend and continue the dharma conditions. I hope you would not hold the mindset of worship, as it would only waste your time.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took almost a year to prepare the annual great puja every year, involving a great amount of manpower, wealth, and logistics so as to repay the grace of the Buddhas, the sentient beings, and the guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche believes that your merits will increase after you attended such a large-scaled Vajrayana puja no matter what attitude you have got while attending the puja. Things will be changed for you. If an accident happens to you after the puja, do not think that you are unfortunate. What you have can actually be the reduced karmic retribution, for something even more serious might have happened to you.

When the practice is being performed, you shall be concentrated. If you have a prior commitment and have to leave the puja early, you will fail to be in concentration. If you keep thinking that you have an appointment at 10 or 11 am, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants you to leave now. Do not be embarrassed. Otherwise, if you leave early in the middle of the practice, your ancestors will be left behind, not knowing what to do. Animals that you ate will go after you. As you did not pay any money for this, you won’t lose anything if you leave. Nevertheless, you will suffer great losses, for you won’t have any other opportunity to attend a puja with 20,000 attendees in Taiwan, let alone the fact that no advertisement was employed. Besides, today’s puja is officiated by an unknown practitioner, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and attended by so many participants. It is truly a great fortune of Taiwan. Moreover, as you will be able to practice charities of wealth, Dharma, and fearlessness, you will receive virtuous help and positive changes will happen to you in your future lives. If you have made the decision to stay, do not leave early. Otherwise your ancestors might slap you in the face in the middle of the night. In the past, someone treated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a meal and came with a group of young women. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw the person’s grandmother standing beside him and slapped him, scolding him for taking so many people to a meal and wasting a lot of money.

Thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to perform the auspicious Amitabha puja for transferring consciousness and gave brief explanations for each rite being carried out. The practice began with the triple refuge, vows, and exorcism. Why was exorcism needed? As a great puja can benefit a lot be sentient beings, ghostly being s with hateful thoughts would be jealous and try to interfere. In order to avoid any obstacles and unnecessary interference during the practice, the practitioner would conduct exorcism with his loving kindness and compassion. Then, the eight offerings were presented and Buddha Amitabha came to the mandala at request, bestowing blessings with his Buddha light upon the venue. Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recited descriptions of the auspicious scenes in the Pure Land such as its water, palace, flowers, and grasses as well as the extraordinary images of Buddha Amitabha, Mahastamaprapta, and Avalokiteshvara. Usually, the recitations of these rites are conducted by lamas. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche chose to recite them personally so as to speed up the practice. As the rituals continued, praises of merits and virtues of Buddha Amitabha, imploration and offerings to the triad of Amitabha Buddha to request their arrival, eight offerings, and pancha were again presented.

According to the Dharma text, if one recites the sacred name of Buddha Amitabha all the time, he will not face untimely death, which means that he will not die in an accident and all the disasters will not happen to him. Besides, we should always praise Buddha Amitabha. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees in the recitations of the heart mantra of Buddha Amitabha, you should not close your eyes. If you recite mantras with closed eyes, you will feel drowsy and illusions will appear easily. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led you in the recitations of the heart mantra of Buddha Amitabha, you should not think that it is you who is reciting. You should listen attentively to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s voice and follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in recitation. Thereby, the merits and virtues you accumulate in the recitation of the heart mantra will be in the sea of merits and virtues of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru. Therefore, your merits and virtues will be vast. However, if you think you are the one to conduct the recitation, your merits and virtues will be minimal.

After leading the attendees in 500 recitations of the mantra of Buddha Amitabha, the compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed at imploration of the attendees to lead them in 100 extra recitations of the heart mantra of Amitabha.

Then, the four empowerments of body, speech, mind, and self-nature were bestowed. Usually, the disciples and believers would not be bestowed with the four empowerments. Only three would be given. Nevertheless, in order to perform today’s Amitabha puja for transferring consciousnesses, the practitioner needs to transform his physical body into a pure and clean Dharma body that is no different than the yidam’s. Then, the tea and rice offerings were conducted. The climate is cold in Tibet. Therefore, the attendees would be given food to eat during the puja. That is why the ritual of rice offering would be conducted. For today’s puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ate some rice symbolically. Afterwards, eight young girls in Tibetan costumes went up to the mandala to sing an offering song. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained that these eight girls are called the eight offering girls in Exoteric Buddhism and representatives of the Dakinis in Vajrayana Buddhism. What they sang was an offering song from the Dakinis, which served as an offering to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, the guru, and the Dharma protectors. The puja continued with a tsok offering. After food offerings were presented to the mandala, the throne of His Holinesses, and the officiating guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the volunteers distributed the food offerings to all the attendees. According to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it is stated in the Dharma text that it is a great virtuous cause and connection for one to have the opportunity to enjoy food together with the Buddhas and Bodhisattva. Thereby, one’s cause and effect of his future attainment of Buddhahood would be generated. Therefore, when the attendees got the food offerings, they could eat some. Do not eat up all the offerings. Leave some for other people.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pointed to a CD-ROM on the table and enlightened the participants that the list of today’s puja attendees and their lists of beings for liberation were projected on the screens for everyone to see. And the lists of beings for liberation were recorded scientifically in the CD-ROM. A CD-ROM could contain a lot of names. This was the method used by Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and also conformed to what described in Buddhist scriptures, “There is still a world of numerous motes of dust in the world of a mote of dust.” To be effective, it is not necessarily the case just to write the names on a yellow paper and post the paper. Then, the puja proceeded to the most important ritual of transferring consciousnesses. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked all participants to stand up and those who were in the restrooms to come back to their seats immediately. On behalf of all participants and their ancestors, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s assistant continued to prostrate reverently before Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru and recited the verses, “For those terrified beings residing in the Bardo, under the gaze of Yama, those tormented by suffering and vexation, restlessly pacing back and forth in utter misery, we implore all the compassionate Beings to come to the rescue.” After sentient beings passed away and before they have reincarnated, that is, the so-called “Bardo” state, they were in a bleak situation and under extreme fear. All participants prayed to take refuge under Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and implored that the great compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas could save and liberate these suffering beings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further asked all attendees, on behalf of the deceased ancestors and relatives, to reverently bow before Buddhas and Bodhisattvas three times. With the immensely powerful compassion, his own infinite merits, and the huge energy from the achievements of practicing Tantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche transferred the consciousnesses of all deceased sentient beings all attendees wanted to help today to Amitabha Buddha’s Pure Land.

In the end, we have to burn the lists of beings for liberation. We should not imitate the popular belief that asking the deceased person to flee quickly during cremation. The deceased person has been liberated. The procedure of burning the lists in the end is to cut off the deceased beings worries and habits from past generations of lives such that they can practice Buddha dharma diligently in the Pure Land at ease.

After the perfect conduction of the dharma of transferring consciousnesses, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to enlighten attendees that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had always advised the participants to be a vegetarian in every year’s great puja. Now even Western countries have begun to advocate a vegetarian diet. However, that was health-oriented. There is a Christian hospital in Taipei that has the regulation of having vegetarian diets for all of its employees, doctors, nurses, and even patients. This is because from clinical experience the doctors found that vegetarian patients would recover better. Buddhist scriptures have stated that eating meat will eliminate your seed of compassion. How could you cultivate a compassionate mind when you still eat sentient beings’ meat? Compassion is the foundation of Buddha dharma. Without compassion, your practices of reciting mantras, reciting sutras, or prostrating before Buddha will not be effective at all. All of you hoped Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to bless and protect you, but you still persist in eating meat. Can this behavior be justified?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has helped you and you still continue to eat sentient beings’ meat. It would be useless for you to attend the puja under such a vicious cycle. In fact, some strange or incurable diseases modern people have gotten are caused by killing sentient beings. Do not think that it is ok just to eat a little meat and it is ok to become a vegetarian later. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also said to a photographer of the puja on the spot that if he still would not become a vegetarian, he could not take picture of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche any more in the future. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who guided the attendees earnestly and tirelessly and reminded the attendees repeatedly simply hoped that all attendees could break off from doing evil deeds to avoid from bad effects.

Buddhist scriptures have stated that even if someone had recited Amitabha Buddha’s name and vowed to be reborn in the Pure Land during his lifetime, but if his karma was not cleaned, though even other person, at the time of his death, advised him to keep the correct thought of vowing to be reborn in the Pure Land, as long as there was a person who ate meat or five spices coming to visit him, all of his enlightenments would disappear. This showed us that eating meat is harmful and has no benefit for us.

Before learning Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was good at eating seafood. Only when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began his Buddhist study did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realize the horrifying law of cause and effect and its definite occurrence. For the sakes of your own health, family, and country, do not kill any more lives. The reason why we would have such extreme weather conditions lies in that people are eating meat. As a practitioner has been helping everyone during his lifetime, you should help yourself too. The disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center exerted their wealth and efforts for you to attend the puja. It appears that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the one to perform the practice. However, without your attendance, there would not have been cause and condition to benefit many sentient beings. Therefore, you have accumulated great merits and virtues.

Although only twenty thousand people came today, the number of sentient beings each of you brought in was really immeasurable. Even if each of you only brought in one thousand beings, there would be twenty million beings waiting to be liberated. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not sleep last night because there were sentient beings standing in queue waiting to be liberated. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has conducted such an auspicious dharma today; in the next three days, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will be very toilsome himself. Today you have done a great virtuous deed; you should continue to extend and nurture this virtue.

Do not think the bad effects caused by eating meat are the punishments from Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, or the guru; the bad effects are from the sentient beings eaten by you. A disciple of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said she had broken her hand while she was a child. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened her that she had previously caught shrimps and crabs and broken the claws of the crabs, so a similar retribution just happened to her hand. In Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, there are many stories of cause and effect like this; you will be afraid once you have heard them. Do not think you will not have girlfriends or boyfriends because of having a vegetarian diet. Those fair-weather friends who eat meat are not that good. Women who are vegetarians will become beautiful and men who are vegetarians will have a better health.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is already more than sixty years old. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not get up to go to bathroom since ascending the Dharma seat from half past eight in the morning to one o’clock in the afternoon. On the contrary, many attendees, mostly young people, walked back and forth for going to the bathroom. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s physical condition is better than that of these young people. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s good health is because of being a vegetarian on one hand and practicing Tantra on the other hand. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also advised young people on the spot not to eat ice again, so their bodies would not like this which could not hold urine.

At the end of the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche announced that he would descend the Dharma seat and circle around the arena to personally sprinkle nectar over the participants. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also indicated that doing this could cleanse everyone’s karma in the body, speech, and mind, improve everyone’s health, and accumulate everyone’s virtues so that all attendees could practice Buddhism earlier in the future, attain Bodhicitta, and liberate from the cyclic existence. During the process of sprinkling nectar, the attendees did not need to leave their seats and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will personally ride an electric car circling around the arena to sprinkle the auspicious nectar over the attendees. At the same time, all participants would follow the leading Buddhist nun to recite the dedication prayer.

Immediately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche walked down the Mandala and circled around each block of seats one by one, leading by eight offering girls and the entourage, to sprinkle nectar over the attendees. Regardless of his own problem of scoliosis and cervical dislocation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stood on the car from the beginning to the end and continuously sprinkled the pure and clean nectar over the participants with an auspicious hand-held grass bundle, sparing no effort. The nectar fell on the the attendees’ bodies one stream after another. Many people raised both of their hands to receive the nectar joyfully. There were still many believers who kneeled on the sides and put their palms together to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious blessings. There were still believers who followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s car and hoped to receive this rare and precious nectar blessings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tirelessly circled the seat area one after another. From the big projection screen, all attendees could see the images of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sprinkling nectar personally in each block of seats. Deeply moved by this image, most attendees stood up and reverently waited for the coming of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Applause and cheers filled the air; the attendees were filled with gratitude and joy. When seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s continuous spraying movements, all of the attendees could not help but feel moved. Many people could not help but cry.

Originally the planning route was only for the broader way in the stadium, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be leaving after go round the stadium for water purification after that. The dharma clothes wearing on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been soaked, his slim body was widely moving by waving hand to splash the nectar water and the physical strength was consumed rapidly. However seeing on some of other block areas, there were still lots of attendees raising their hands beseeched for purification of splashing. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the fleet of the electric vehicles went on going around more passageways in order to let more people have the splash of the nectar water, completely disregarded himself to satisfy the believers requirement, like going back and forth in the boundless suffering ocean of reincarnation to salvage countless sentient beings. The splashing of the nectar water purified the venue of Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall, where has been turning to a pure land at once. The minds of sentient beings urgently longs for blessings and being salvaged, the great compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche which is no difference with Buddha has been revealed in all.

Seeing that their Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is leaving the Dharma seat and performing water purification for all attendees, all the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center respectfully stood up reverently. When seeing the Most Venerable Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the sake of the sentient beings needs disregarded his aged body, the dislocation of his cervical spine, his S-shaped Scoliosis , the joint of his right shoulder having no synovial cavity (articulating bones contact each other directly), and the aching problem of the joints of his Elbow and hand bowl and so on to throw the nectar water in excess.  Particylarly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not able to squat stances on the narrow vehicle to support the body for large sway movements. Whenever sprinkling heavy auspicious grass bundle, fully loaded with nectar, Rinchen Dorjee Dorjee suffered huge load on his arms and serious physical pain due to the big vibration if recoiling and swaying. Generally one would not be able to raise his hand after waving his hands for 5 minutes. But seeing so many long-awaiting people with their waving hands, the compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche commanded the disciple driver to drive through more seating areas, sprinkling more nectar with merciful smile. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gracefully interacted with all participants as if his physical pain and fatigue did not exist at all. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let all participants witness that there are only the sentient beings in the mind of a compassionate practitioner, and all his physical pain would not affect his such a conpassionate mind. The tears of all disciples had been rolling down their cheeks for their laborious guru. It is because that their guru can give up his life for the sake of sentient beings. In order to benefit sentient beings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already been regardless himself. As long as sentient beings need the Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not care about his workload to help them. Such the great motions waving his hand for sustained several tens of minutes are the burden for a strong young man, not to mention that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been 63 years old. If there was no great compassion and Bodhicitta, he would not be heedless of his personal life to bestow his merits to those people who do not meet before?

After finish the water purification, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche came back to the mandala, and exhausted. He needed two attendants to support him in order to stand up. These two attendants who are the disciples of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used their shoulders for the support of him could not help to cry out. Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been exhausted, he tried his best to make enlightenment for the attendees: Everybody all wished to have the blessings bestowed by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, even if some of you felt that you did not gain the water purification, actually all of you already had it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just performed the water purification, seeing lots of people have illness. Saying to this, being a disciple of Buddha, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche choked with sobs and couldn’t help sheds tears. The attendees impressed the compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; they sincerely drew the enthusiastic applause to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also enlightened the attendees that it will help you to have a good health for the water purification today. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wished all of you can listen to his advice not to eat meat anymore. Otherwise it is not enough to help you even if there were ten times of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche exhausted. If you can listen to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas not to kill sentient beings anymore, and learning Buddhism and practice the Ten Good Deeds, and doing the good deeds, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will appreciate you.

Later on, preceded by instruments, banners, and eight young female disciples to make offerings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took the electric car leaving the venue. All 20,000 of the attendees were standing, clapping their hands continually to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The Attendees shouting thanks to Rinpoche for grateful of salvage the sentient beings and bestowing the blessings.

October 10, 2010

Disciples and believers of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reverently listened to the dharma audio-recordings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. The dharma audio tapes were recorded on the 13th of April, 2003.

Before the puja, a female disciple shared her experience of how her father was helped by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. On September 4th, her father went to make an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and implored for blessings. In the afternoon of September 6th, her father died peacefully at home. She was grateful to the blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who had shortened the length of her father’s suffering. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had bestowed the auspicious Phowa Dharma for her father so that he would be reborn in the pure land. On the 9th of March in 2010, her father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. The doctor made it clear that the tumor is inoperable; radiotherapy and chemotherapy were the alternatives. Not willing to be tortured by further medical treatments, her father didn’t want to go through both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. All her family members supported her father’s decision and her father began to take Chinese medicine in order to change the quality of his physical conditions. By the end of April, either taking Chinese medicine or undergoing acupuncture therapy didn’t improve her father’s health. He continued to have difficulty of swallowing and cough with mucus. As a result, his faith was shaken. By the persuasion of well-meaning friends and relatives, the thought of trying Western medicine emerged. For the hope of surviving, he was willing to go for it. On 23rd of April, he checked into the hospital to cure his pneumonia. In the mean time, he was also waiting for the chance to undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

On May 15th when she met with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the first time and implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings for reducing her father pains during his illness. The second Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche talked her blindness was revealed. Rinpoche asked “Are you the one can be solely responsible for your father’s illness?” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her to go home and hold a family meeting before she came to meet with Rinpoche again. On May 29th, together with her mother and younger sisters, she went to make an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reminded them to obtain detailed information from doctors about treatment procedures and results. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also illustrated his personal example of being a survival of skin cancer but had not received any radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further stressed that it was not that Rinpoche was against radiotherapy and chemotherapy. But they had to ask thorough information before making any decisions. And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately told them “It is definitely that I can help him not to fall into the three evil realms after passing. If you need help of Buddha Dharma later, you can come back to me any time.”

And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pointed to her and said that she has been a filial daughter. But she felt ashamed to be called filial piety for she was not able to share her father’s suffering. She was regretful that when the alarming signs of her father’s illness were shown, she didn’t care for his health conditions in time. She took advantage the way his father cherished children, she had been away from home to work. She repented for her selfishness, not able to share family responsibilities and work. Because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had talked about her filial piety, she tried her best to handle every matter while her father was ill and after he passed away. With the words “filial piety” being said by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to describe her, she had received the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which had supported her to accompany her father’s last journey in this lifetime. On June 5th, she made an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and implored Rinpoche for the opportunity to attend pujas. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that there would be interference if she started to take a vegetarian diet. After taking consideration of such interference, she told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that after she could truly take a vegetarian diet, she would come back and ask for attending pujas again.

In mid May, due to repeated aspiration pneumonia, the inflammation of her father’s lungs couldn’t be effectively improved. The doctors suggested stop take in food by mouth. Instead, intravenous injection of nutrition and albumin was used to maintain his father’s physical and nutritional conditions. On June 4th, her father underwent a surgery of gastrostomy. Her father was fed with low-residue liquid through feeding tube directly into his stomach. From then on, her father no long would create any vicious conditions with other sentient beings because of his eating meat. After the pneumonia being controlled, her father began radiation therapy on June 18th. Several days after the therapy started, however, the lung problems became more serious. The results of further check-ups indicated that esophageal cancer had compressed bronchi, which had caused the collapse of his left lung. The doctor recommended a surgical procedure for inserting bronchial stents to maintain the lung’s functions. In the mean time, the doctor also informed them the risks of the operation such as extreme bleeding during surgery. On June 26th, she invited her mother to beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings to help the surgery proceed well. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her father’s name, the symbolic animal sign of her father’s birth year, and the date of the scheduled surgery, Rinpoche began to recite mantras to bestow blessings to her father. Meanwhile, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also mercifully promised her supplication of attending pujas. The surgery went smoothly and her father was sound and well. After staying in the intensive care unit for three days, her father was sent back to the general ward. His recovery also went well.

She used to live a life full of evil without her awareness, thinking she was a person insisting on and rarely compromising with certain values of life. It was not until when she began to attend regular pujas and listened to the enlightenment of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did she had the chance to examine her body, speech, and mind and realized how terribly she had been wrong. Without her noticing, her mind had already been seriously poisoned by her greediness, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and suspicion. Two years ago, she had had an abortion for a selfish reason. It was a killing of an innocent life. In retrospection of her various vicious conducts such as killing, eating sentient beings’ flesh, and arguing with parents for her self-righteousness, she was too ashamed to face the world.

On July 17th, she and her younger sister went to meet with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Her sister implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s consent for her to attend pujas, whereas she wished to, on behalf of her father, make offering and implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s performing Phowa Dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not accept her offering and casually mentioned “Phowa Dharma is not that kind of dharma you ask for and will obtain it. It requires immense merits to receive it.” Even though she has not taken refuge, she already thought Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was the guru she would follow. On July 18th, her wish came true; she became a disciple of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

On August 13th, the doctor discovered a hole under the bronchial stents and told them, if necessary, her father might have to undergo another operation. Whether or not to go through another surgery was a dilemmatic decision. As the attending doctor sought opinions of family members, her father thought “no operation no hopes. I want to fight the fight.” On August 21st, she and her mother again went to make an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for her father’s sake. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately recited mantras to bestow blessings onto her fathers. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche finished reciting and seemed not to have further enlightenment for them, anxiously and indecisively, she said something more as her greediness emerged. Without waiting for her finishing, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said “the operation is done for your sake.” A dharma brother seeing their frustration after they drew back from the front came to share the experience of how to accumulate merits on behalf of one’s father. She suggested implore things such as opportunities to make great offering, full prostrations, and repentance on behalf of her father.

After the medical conference on August 23rd, the resident indirectly explained to her father that it would be impossible to undergo surgeries of inserting stents or aggressive procedures such as chemotherapy. She comforted him that it might be a good thing not to do chemotherapy because it would cause unnecessary pains. She also shared the stories of how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche liberated sentient beings. Additionally, she told her father that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help him. As he lied in bed, he could always visualize Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Following the experiences shared by dharma brothers about “the quality of making great offering was far more important than the quantity,” she began to search for the fund to make great offering. She and her younger sister came to the agreement to try their best to make the offering. Whether no not the rest of the family could understand and accept the importance of making great offering was not essential. They agreed not to have them worry about it. While hesitating what to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for her father, a thought suddenly emerged “Since my knowledge and ability are not sufficient, I’d ask for nothing for my father. I should completely trust Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will arrange the best for my father!” In the morning of August 28th, the date to make great offering, she flipped through the book “Happiness and Suffering,” page 90 jumped into her vision. The last paragraph read “…when they need the help of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru, don’t expect what you wish. You should absolutely believe in the fact that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru will do anything good to you. They will benefit you. This is enough.” With these words, her faith became as unwavering as it could be.

In the evening of August 28th, she and her younger sister went to meet with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who mercifully accepted their offering, gave a nectar pill to her father, and promised her request to make full prostrations at the venue during pujas. After returning to the hospital, they gave the nectar pill to her father to swallow. After her father took the nectar pill, the feeding went smoothly without causing vomiting. The chest pain due to frequent coughing also stopped. On August 30th, the dharma brother who worked in the same hospital came to visit her father and sheared stories of how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche liberated sentient beings and his personal experience of how Rinpoche had helped him. After the visit, she inquired her father’s willingness of seeking an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. This time, her father agreed. On September 4th, her father went to the center by ambulance and implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. Moreover, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also agreed her wish to perform Phowa Dharma for her father, yet stressed that whether or not the dharma could be carried out depended on future causes and conditions.

At around 3 PM on September 5th, her father was in deep coma; he was dying. After the regular puja, she and her sister rushed back to the hospital. Her sister held the dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in front of her father and continuously reminded him to visualize Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once gave the following enlightenment: “You should donate your money to those who can’t afford to see doctors or going to schools. Don’t be lazy. You should personally deliver your regards to the patients.” She and her sister knew the importance of making offering and doing charities. They, however, always simply used the most convenient ways to donate their money, sloppily wiring donation to medical foundations. She repented her laziness. She also repented her not being able to follow the teachings of the Buddha Dharma in time, only doing what was taught when it was in emergency. At 8 AM September 6th, she sought nursing staff’s help to contact social workers at the hospital, who would locate patients who couldn’t afford medical fees. Swimmingly they brought the donation to patients.

At around 10 o’clock, the attending doctor came to see her father and said “according to your father’s breathing condition, he might die at any time today.” Because of the doctor’s words, they decided to “bring her father home.” At around 2 PM, they arrived at home. Her father insisted not using oxygen mask. She and her sisters kneeled down to pray for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to care for her father’s last journey and began to make full prostrations in front of Rinpoche’s dharma photo. At 4:40, she kneeled down by her father, reciting mantras. Her father gradually breathed slowly and finally after a few slight coughs he stopped breathing. She was grateful to Buddhas’, Bodhisattvas’, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings and help so that they could accompany the father to the last moment without any regret.

Around 5:50 pm, she got the news of that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completed the conduction of Phowa ritual for her father. And the informing dharma brother asked her: “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was asking if your father had practiced Taoism in his lifetime?” Indeed, the disciple’s mother confirmed that she had heard from her grandmother that when her father was a child, he was adopted as a son by Lu Tung-Pin. She replied the news to the dharma brother and the dharma brother told her that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said it was Lu Tung-Pin who led her father by the hand to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Even Lu Tung-Pin knew it to bring her father to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great ability is really admirable! At that moment she, while doing full prostrations in the Buddhist venue, stopped to call her mother and asked her to touch her father’s crown of the head as well as forehead. Via phone her mother told her the forehead felt cold, whereas the crown of his head felt warm. Around at 8:00 pm she and her younger sister arrived home. They started to recite Buddha’s names besides their father by turns. They also kept in mind that father’s body should not be touched by anyone within 8 hours after death. Later they got to know that after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completed the conduction of Phowa ritual, their father’s consciousness was transferred to the Pure Land. Thereafter, touching would not have any effect on their father. She felt silly for that she did not ask the present people to touch her father’s crown of head so as to personally feel the auspiciousness of Phowa. What a big mistake! After 8 hour recitation of Buddha’s names, father’s mouth gradually closed. He was smiling, with the corners of his mouth going up slightly. Also, his face’s color gradually turned to be uniform. When she lifted up the quilt to move her father’s body, she saw father’s hands crossed on his abdomen, and his right leg breezily bent, with those postures exactly the same as when he was alive. Under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, father peacefully and quietly proceeded to the Pure Land.

Her father’s cremation was on October 6th. Upon stepping into the Cremated remains retrieval rooms, her younger sister gasped in admiration: “Wow! How beautiful the color is!” The cremated ashes appeared in pink and light green colors. They easily found a clear round hole on the crown of the head. All of these are just the auspicious signs of the completion of the Phowa ritual conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She has immense gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for the great favor and grace for her! She also repented that due to being short-sighted and clinging, she was not aware to prepare for father’s death in advance but instead greedily looking forward to his recovering. By so doing, she wasted the money and energy to take care father’s dilapidated body, and delayed the conditional chances for accumulating merits for father.

She made the repentance of her being badly unfilial! She did not listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instruction to ask the doctor clearly, which made her father experienced more unnecessary suffering from taking radiotherapy. Although she knew that undergoing chemotherapy could help nothing but increase her father’s suffering. However, with unstable will, the thought “Since father wanted to take the chemotherapy, just let him brave it out.” arose in her. By her father’s will of seeking to survive, she unashamedly rationalized her greedy thought. Fortunately, the index of her father’s inflammation and having pneumonia stopped him from taking chemotherapy. If her father had undergone chemotherapy, she would have had no way to compensate for it even by falling into the eightieth hell!

While she was dealing with her father’s dangerous moment of being critically ill, she dared to have the anger thought on the elders’ benevolent help and reminders. When the elder raised their suggestions with some differences between hers, suddenly the evil thought of “They are manifesting as the karmic creditors and I have to get rid of them” arose in her. Luckily she perceived the deviated thoughts right away. She took a thankful deep bow to the elder before she spoke in reply to the elder’ opinions, so that she did not make a gross, irreparable error due to her greediness and attachment.

In early time before she came to seek audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for her father’s illness, the thought ever arouse to her mind: she desired to follow a person who was able to directly point out her faults. Surprisingly, compassionate Buddhas and Bodhisattvas kindly bestowed upon her this opportunity to follow the rare precious jewel – Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in Buddhism cultivation. She has been yielded in her speech and mind to the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s successful teachings. She wishes to follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in Buddhist practices and cultivation life after lives, without withdrawing and turning back ever!

In the following, disciples and believers reverently listened to the audio-recordings of dharma teachings by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

For some of the attendees, it was their first time to attend the Chod puja. In Sanskrit, Chod means to cut off. During the process of conduction, the practitioner, through the means of contemplation in meditation, offers his flesh body to all sentient beings. In Han language, it’s called “Body Offering Puja.” The point is based on the Paramita, namely wisdom. It is our many improper thoughts, distinctions, and attachments the causes that lead us to be reincarnated from endless birth and death in the six realms, and for us to have affliction. These power keep us unceasingly be reincarnated in the suffering ocean of pains and vexations.

The purpose for Buddha Sakyamuni to come the world to propagate Buddhism this time is not to give magical power or sense or to bestow you find things. The most purpose of the Buddha is to teach us how to make use of this lifetime to cut off our afflictions and gain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Buddha Sakyamuni imparts Buddhist teachings for 49 years. And the most the Buddha has talked about is Paramita and wisdom. Maha-prajna-paramita-sutra is up to one third volume of total Tripitaka, so we can see that Paramita is extremely important dharma for practice. Can wisdom be bestowed by Buddha to us? Can we pray for wisdom? Can wisdom be sought outwards? The answers are no. all sentient beings inherently possess the wisdom same as the Buddha’s.  It is just because we have not been aware of it. As our wisdom is submerged with the flood of the Five Poisons, namely greediness, hatred, delusion, arrogance, and doubt, we are not able to see our inherent pure dharma-nature. Reciting mantras and Buddha’s names, attending repentance rituals, doing full prostrations everyday are not really the method for you to attain to your wisdom. Those abovementioned are just the methods that help you to suppress your afflictions through practice. It is also the reason why you are asked to recite mantras, do prostration to Buddhas, and keep in mind the Buddha and guru’s teachings every day. As your afflictions are not possible to cut off, like a blade of grass repressed by a stone, after the stone is taken away, the blade of grass continues to grow. This is also the reason why in Tibetan Buddhism, it particularly values the relationship between Guru and disciple. An authentic guru must know the methods to help you. But what matters is that if disciples can completely act in accord with teachings. The so-called acting in accord with teachings refers to that on all the Buddha-dharma guru imparts you would have no self-thought at all but totally accept it.

Here is a simple example happened recently: before you depart to India, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally told you not to eat the ice cream there. However, there were two people who did not take Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice and tasted the local ice cream. As a result, one of them is still having loose bowels till now. She thought she was very healthy and left guru’s advice behind. She now acquired typhoid and has loose bowels. At this kind of moment she thought of Guru because she was afraid she might die! Placing many calls, she requested Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to go to the hospital to bless her. Do not think it would be ok for you to not listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on a trifle issue. It does matter. Another one who did not take Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice acquired Acute fulminating  hepatitis. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed blessings to him so that he survived. Being indocile like these cases, you just like to do whatever you want. In thus doing, no matter how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts dharmas for you, the help you gain would be limited.

So far, some of the present who have already taken refuge still eat meat. In every Buddhist sutras, the Buddha has always advised us to apply his methods into our daily life. Only in doing so, you would be able to change your future. In the recent India trip, some of the elder got angry while some of the young felt dissatisfied, which showed that they did not practice Buddhism at all.

Afflictions arise from attachment! Being clinging is self-righteous and feeling others are all wrong. It is the origin of afflictions. Wisdom refers to be clearly aware that all phenomena in the world arise and cease in accordance with conditions. They do not possess their own nature. All the worldly things we see, hear, and feel come from the causes as well as bring out the effect. There exists the dharma of arising and ceasing. Explained in Buddhist term, it is the nature of emptiness. Emptiness does not refer to none. Emptiness means that all the phenomena we get to know through our human experiences are of no own nature. They arise and cease for some reasons. In the Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices, it advises us not be clinging, not be afraid of slander by others, not fear of being looked down on. And this is just to break self-attachment. One who has strong self-attachment is not possible to attain achievement on his path of Buddhist cultivation. The reason is that he, while strongly holding to the concept of the ego, cannot realize sentient beings’ suffering, thus mercy and compassion cannot be developed. Without mercy and compassion, there is no Buddha-dharma. Therefore, in Maha-prajna-paramita-sutra, what is most talked about is the word “emptiness.”

The Buddha has illustrated many cases to advise us not be clinging to the worldly things. They are all fake, including what you realize, you feel, and you see on your practice path. As long as you have a bit of clinging heart, your vexations cannot be cut off. It is all due to self-attachment for that husband and wife argue with each other, why the husband feels his wife is not considerate whereas the wife regards her husband is not gentle. If the wife thinks her husband painstakingly works whereas the husband considers his wife suffers a lot, they will not have a row. If you do not learn the suffering of the people surrounded, it is inappropriate to say you are a Buddhist disciple or you are practicing Buddhist teachings. Once you take refuge in hope to gain liberation from the cyclic existence, the Five Precepts and the Ten Meritorious Acts are a must for you to practice. You cannot avoid them. Think about how much you have practiced. Have you ever noticed that every time you make some mistakes, you always repent but with many excuses. Actually it is not repentance when you think you have to explain. You are just making apology, still feeling you are not wrong, thinking Buddha and guru misunderstand you. Now we are in the world full of chaos. It is because everyone thinks they do not go wrong. It is always others’ faults. Therefore, conflicts are brought out, and then the war happens. If you still cannot firmly make up your mind to employee Buddha-Dharma in your daily life, even though you seek refuge and conduct Achi practice rituals every day, it does not mean that you can gain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Nor does it mean that the disaster will not come to you.

Many people may feel they are supervised by Boddhisattvas and guru after they start to cultivate Buddhism. However, it is not to supervise you. As Gurus clearly and thoroughly sees the serious consequences of the law of cause and effect, they know it is very dangerous for you to think and act for your own benefit all the time. It is for that you will again fall into the reincarnation of the six realms. The reason Bodhisattvas advise us to think for the benefit of sentient beings with every single thought is that when you want beings better than you, you will naturally be good. But people are always reluctant to give. They would rather to give money to their children first and let themselves live in suffering. Then they may start to complain that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are not efficaciousness. Actually Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are not efficacious. As long as you listen, they definitely let you obtain liberation from the cycle of birth and death in this life. Skimpily speaking, Buddhist cultivation is not seeking for the present comfortableness, not for future wealth and health, or even not for gaining realization in the future. One needs not to seek all of these but he will obtain them once after he acts in accord with teachings and completely employees Buddhism in his daily life. Have you obtained the things you are praying for Achi every day? The answer would be no, as what you implore for is all against the law of cause and effect, and you do not practice virtuous nor do you benefit sentient beings. Then it will be opposite to the Buddhist doctrines. Therefore, it is not possible for you to get what you ask for! The saying “Grand whatever is requested”refers to that one needs to beseech according to the law of cause and effect,  and then he can correspond to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. On the contrary, if one requests with his own thought of greediness, even if he has attended pujas for one hundred thousand times, he merely plants a little bit merits of heaven and human while those are easily consumed such as by getting into a temper and blaming on other people.

You are able to listen to the Buddhist teachings in current life because you practiced the Five Commandments and Ten Meritorious Acts in your previous life. You practiced in your previous lifetime, but you did not conduct the practice properly. Then here you are in this life. As we have come, we forget all the vows that we took in the past due to the bewilderment caused in change of intermediate states. What were the vows? The motivation of learning the Buddhist teachings is for the benefit of the sentient beings. You began to learn Buddhism because you felt painful, had problems, and wanted to change your fortune. This is different from the methods that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are teaching us. Our Chinese ancestors told us that those who have a big heart will have great merits. It is in accordance to the Buddhist teachings. If one abandons egoism and hopes that other live better than he does, his merits will naturally grow. Likewise, his obstacles in practice will decrease and his wishes will be fulfilled. If you always ask for your own good, your narrow mindset will prevent you from getting anything you want. All the sutras teach us to learn Buddhism in this way, but you never listen. You constantly forget that you cannot live alone in this world and need a lot of people to help you. If these people do not live well, how can we live a good life?

Therefore, when you learn Buddhism, you start the learning from your family by turning your behaviors virtuous. Naturally, your family members will follow you and learn Buddhism. Your spouse doesn’t learn Buddhism with you because you tell lies to him. If you don’t let your husband know about your Buddhist learning and tell him that you are having tea with friends instead, what will your husband think about the Buddhist teachings when he knows about your lie? In the Five Commandments and Ten Meritorious Acts, it is clearly stated that one has to refrain from telling lies. If you tell him that you have done something which you did not do and that you have not done something which you actually did, how is it possible for you to influence your husband so as to let him learn Buddhism with you? Is it evil to learn Buddhism? If you think that learning Buddhism is evil so that you have to lie to your spouse, you should actually stop learning Buddhism. Because you have violated your precepts, it won’t work even if you continue to listen to the Buddhist teachings or attend pujas. If you think that you have to hide your Buddhist study and let no one know about it, you should stop your learning. Such a heart is a heart of the devil. If you learn the Buddhist compassion with a devil’s heart, how can you ever learn it? If you hide something so good as the Buddhist teachings, it shows that you calculate a lot. You definitely hide a lot of matters from others. Would you be a trustworthy person then? If you cannot influence your parents to learn Buddhism with you, it shows that you have change yet. Many people would say that their parents are stubborn and hard to change. They are not stubborn at all. It is you who haven’t changed. When you fail to change, how can you make an old person believe that his or her child has learned the Buddhist teachings and decide to follow you?

What is the problem in your Buddhist study? It is that you are self-centered and refuse to correct your bad habits, and therefore you will never have influence on others. When one sees your speech and conduct different from what a Buddhist would have, how can you ask him or her to learn Buddhism? Just as the aforementioned, those who abide by the Five Commandments and Ten Meritorious Acts would not have dark facial complexion and would appear brighter. Why so? It is because your heart is dim and fails to reveal its light. You still have not taken your aspiration Bodhichitta.

The Chod puja is not a practice that can be conducted by an ordinary practitioner. It definitely takes someone who understands the Buddhist teachings well. In theory, one has to know clearly that Buddhist study is all about making sacrifice and contribution and has nothing to do with one’s own benefits. If he manages to get this notion, he can learn the practice. To put it briefly, if the participants of the puja have the same attitude as the practitioner, the virtues and merits that they accumulate will be even greater than those for the practitioner. This is the virtues and merits of rejoicing, i.e. the virtues and merits of praise. All you want from the puja is hoping yourselves to get better or hoping your children and spouse to have a prominent career. Such thinking is unrelated to the heart of sacrificing oneself stated by the Buddhas. What makes you think you could possibly connect to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas?

In the beginning of ever Vajrayana puja, the guru always tells the participants that their motivation is very important. If you have the mindset of the Buddhas and Bodhisattva, the blessing, virtues, and merits for you will be as great as those of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If you only think about yourself, you will earn very little, even less than a dust. Think about the many suffering sentient beings every single day. If you learn Buddhism for your own benefit, you have an attitude of other religions. What are other religions about? All they do is keep praying to the deities to give things to them. The Buddhas have nothing to give to us and ask us to renounce many unnecessary things. Therefore, when you learn Buddhism, you must be clear whether you have turned your heart yet. If the guru repeatedly advises you on the same issue during every puja and you refuse to follow, your karmic connection with the guru will naturally and gradually vanish. Great karmic connection is generated under the condition that both share the same thinking and intention. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are concerned with the sentient beings in the sea of sufferings around the clock in hopes that they may be liberated from their suffering. Therefore, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas forget about their own existence. Do you have such thinking around the clock? So, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has taught you to examine your own body, speech, and mind and to see if you think about the suffering of the sentient beings. If you fail to do so, you will still think like other religions regardless the amount of your mantra recitation and meditative sitting. You will never achieve the attainment of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas or liberate yourself from the cycle of birth and death.

The greatest part of the Chod puja is that it enables us to understand clearly the whereabouts of our afflictions. The theoretical foundation of the Chod puja is the Heart Sutra. In the Heart Sutra, it is stated that every phenomena is fake and we should not attach of any of them. We should realize that we have the clean and pure nature so that we can abandon our various greedy thoughts. In the 37 Practices of the Bodhisattvas, it is stated that we should not feel happy when others praise us. When others defame us, we should express our gratitude and regard them as our Bodhisattva. Why is the 37 Practices of the Bodhisattvas so important? It is because we are practicing Vajrayana Buddhism. In Vajrayana, one has to practice on the Bodhisattva path so as to attain Buddhahood. If one who practices on the Bodhisattva path does not cultivate the Six Paramitas, it can never work. The 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas contains the most important and the most fundamental concepts in the Six Paramitas. If you fail to comprehend and uphold the concepts of the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas, it is impossible for you to have any achievement in your current life or any success with your worldly affairs.

The theories of the composition of the Chod puja are derived from the Heart Sutra, the most important part of Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra. Through the Chod puja, we are able to eliminate our ignorance and afflictions generated in our previous and current lives. Only when your afflictions are eliminated can your wisdom be revealed. According to the Dharma text, if we conduct a recitation of the Heart Mantra in reverence, the virtues and merits generated will be equal to those accumulated through reciting 100,000 verses in the Prajnaparamita Sutra. With the concepts in the Heart Sutra and the tantric practices, the Chod puja includes the Phowa, Tsa Lung Trulkhor, and Mahamudra, the most important meditative practice in the Drikung Kagyu Lineage. It is a practice that employs both Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism. Achi Chokyi Drolma, the special Dharma Protector of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, practiced the Chod in her final moments. At completion of the puja, she then transformed herself into rainbow-like light and attained rebirth in the pure land. It can be seen that the Chod puja is very important for the Kagyu school.

If the whole world is in chaos, how long can you remain living in a good condition? When the world is in order and the country is safe, we Buddhist learners can thereby have the condition to continue our cultivation of the Buddhist teachings. If the country is chaotic, you will not feel at ease even with your attainment of Buddhahood. When you attend the puja, do not pray for yourself. Even if your family member is sick, you won’t need to pray specifically for him. How many people are sick every day? How many have not received help with the Buddhist teachings? How much suffering do they have to undergo with their illnesses? Since you feel sad at seeing your family member get sick, why don’t you expand your feelings and think about the fact that others suffer just as much as your family members? When you are able to do so, you have the thinking of the Bodhisattvas. Thereby, it will bring more help to your family members. What does it mean to be sincere? It means one single heart, a heart to have absolute faith in the teaching of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In other words, it is to simply believe.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never prayed for his mother. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother has a lot of ailments. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother always lives through hardships. It is because all the mothers in the world is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother. You often see that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestows blessings upon the elderly and the young without any differentiation as if they are Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s own family. Parents suffer at seeing their sick children and children suffer at seeing their sick parents. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to share such feelings because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has a mother and children, just like you. Therefore, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche expand his feelings, many people are then able to be helped.

What are the differences between a devil and a Buddha? A devil does not necessarily have an ugly look. A Buddha does not necessarily have a good look. In Exoteric Buddhism, Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara takes the form of the burning face Bodhisattva when helping the beings in the Realm of Ghosts and has a terrifying look. In Vajrayana, the horse-headed Avalokiteshvara has a terrifying look, too. Therefore, it is wrong to judge whether it is a devil or a Buddha from their appearances. A devil does not help us to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death, whereas a Buddha must tell you have to do it. Another difference between a devil and a Buddha is that a devil helps the sentient beings under particular conditions and with specific objects. If you show no reverence to him, fail to make an offering, or fail to meet his requirements, a devil will not help you. What are a devil’s objects? It means that the devil prefers them. However, a Buddha does not do that. As long as you have the karmic connections and sincerity, a Buddha will certainly help you. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just helped a child. She was born with severe scoliosis. She had undergone surgeries and a lot of medical treatments. Before she met with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she could not go to the bathroom by herself. She couldn’t eat or walk. Then, her parents took her to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. They paid about 4 visits to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who bestowed blessing to her for 5 minutes each time. Now, the child can walk. She has rosy facial complexion and can eat by herself. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not known the child and did not get any money offering from her. Nevertheless, her parents showed great reverence. Every time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed blessings upon the girl, they always did prostrations at the side. In Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind, they did not do prostrations to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and all the sentient beings. Therefore, their daughter was able to make great progress. The couple had never listened to the Buddhist teachings, but they managed to show their sincerity, a single heart. Things then turn for them at once. Therefore, this anecdote served as a proof. As long as you have sincerity and a single heart to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas without having any doubt, things will change soon. What is sincerity? Since you believe the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and want to learn Buddhism, you naturally have to abandon all your self-opinionated thoughts. As we have handed our lives to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, we shall never be afraid, for the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will never do us harm. So, when you learn Buddhism, do not be afraid of anything coming at you. All of them are manifestation of your karmic retribution and have nothing to do with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. When you are able to do this, your karma accumulated in your previous lives will then have the opportunity to be changed, purified, and eliminated.

It takes a painstaking process for a Chod learner to accomplish the practice and to benefit the sentient beings with it. The Chod puja is different from any other practice. The other practices might only require the practitioner to recite sutras or mantras and are a bit easier. However, a practitioner of the Chod puja has to be clear about Exoteric Buddhism, which he has experienced and realized, and achieve accomplishments in tantric practices so as to benefit the sentient beings with the Chod puja. Therefore, as you have the karmic connection to attend such an auspicious puja, you shall not be selfish or think only for yourself. You should expand your mind. In fact, when we are able to expand our minds, all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the universe know about it. Therefore, if you are able to have aspiration Bodhichitta while attending the puja, you think like the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. With such thinking, your karmic creditors from previous lives will naturally help you in your practice. If you only think for yourself, who should your karmic creditors go to after you are better off? They will naturally become your obstacles and will not help you. When you have aspired great Bodhichitta for the benefit of the sentient beings, you have included yourself, your family members, and karmic creditors from previous lives. Thus, do you think that your karmic creditors will set you up? The fact that your attendance in the pujas is not efficacious lies in that you are too selfish. You only think for yourself and want to attain Enlightenment. How can such a selfish person attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death?

What is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s vow? As long as the hell is not empty, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva would never attain Buddhahood! What is Avalokiteshvara’s vow? Avalokiteshvara vowed to liberate all sentient beings! What is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s vow? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche vowed to help all sentient beings to attain Buddhahood! Simply speaking, the major point is that one’s own interest is not important. The eight major bodhisattvas’ vows were all for benefiting sentient beings, not for their own attainments of Buddhahood. If Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and those who particularly practice on bodhisattva’s path still has the distinctions of me, sentient beings, people, and time of lifespan, they are not Bodhisattvas. What are the meanings of these four things? They mean that we are still attached to ‘I’ am doing something and ‘I’ am helping someone. We have to remember ‘we are part of all sentient beings’; when you help sentient beings, you actually help yourself; this has great power. If you think you certainly have to help yourself, then this kind of thought has very small power and is contrary to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ wishes and ideas. In fact, this kind of method taught by Buddha and Bodhisattvas can let us attain great accomplishments in the aspect of worldly matters, whether in business or in career. For example, the dharma text of Chod dharma has stated that, for a person who has attained achievements on practicing Chod dharma, his name will be known by many people inexplicably and many treasures will appear in front of him or even be given to him.

From the perspective of Buddhism, we have not only this life. Since beginningless time, we may have already lived tens of thousands of generations of lives, or even a few millions of generations of lives. The people in this world might have relationships with us in our past generations of lives.

Why do new epidemics occur now? This is from killing living beings. The people of Hong Kong and Singaporean like the most to eat cooked meat or fish that was freshly killed. So the epidemic appears the most violent in both places. The Buddha advised us to be vegetarians. Being a vegetarian does not have any merit. But because being a vegetarian will break your bad relationships with other sentient beings, you will then have the ability to repay all of your debts you owed sentient beings. Simply speaking, you have already been in debt; if you do not repay the old debt and continue to owe new debt, you will not be able to repay all your debts. So this is the reason of being a vegetarian. Those who do not have a vegetarian diet have particularly more diseases and problems. The cause of cancer is from killing living beings. Many people are reluctant to have cancer. Their first reaction was, “I have not done any bad thing”. But how can that be? Who has not scolded others in his life? Who has not hated others? Even if you have not personally used a knife to kill animals, you must have killed cockroaches and ants. Then how do you calculate the debts of these killings? Then you will ask, how do we live like this every day? So we have to practice Buddha dharma in order to have any chance to repay them. We are killing living beings every day; even if being vegetarians, we are still killing living beings. Do not think it is great to be a vegetarian; being a vegetarian is just better than killing animals. During farming and planting vegetables, to make plants look nice the farmers have sprinkled pesticides and killed many sentient beings! A person had cancer because his mind was not compassionate and did not concern the sufferings of other sentient beings; he only hoped for his own benefits.

In Taiwan’s statistics, there was a person who got cancer every 9 minutes on average. When seeing this kind of news, many people were not afraid and thought that the cancer would not occur in their bodies. But when seeing SARS, many people were afraid of death. SARS infection is so severe now and has caused two hundred people to die in the world. However, the number of death is less than that caused by Iraq wars. Have you felt that Iraqis were miserable? No, because you thought it had nothing to do with you. You are afraid of SARS so you wear masks. But why didn’t you fear when there were so many Iraqis died? Why didn’t you fear the Iraq war? It was because it has nothing to do with you. Americans did not attack here, but SARS will be here. So people are afraid and do not dare to board an aircraft and do not dare to do anything. You can see people’s selfish thoughts. If you were told today that the Iraq war was an infectious disease and would spread to Taiwan, you would be afraid immediately.

The Chod dharma advised us not to persist in anything which we thought is correct. There is no absolute right or wrong in the world. It is all subjective. Subjectiveness is a modern terminology. With Buddhist terminology, it is persisting in my opinions and my thoughts. For example, do you think Iraq war is correct? Americans said they were right while Iraqis also said they were right. Then who was correct?

Buddha dharma uses the law of cause and effect to explain all phenomena in the world. There must be previous causes for what you have today. They could not suddenly happen. They must occur from something you did. The law of cause and effect is not invented by the Buddha and is also not a very secret and mysterious thing; what you will get is based on what you did. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had told disciples not to eat ice cream in India. The fact that a disciple did not listen to the guru’s words and ate ice cream was the cause; the fact that the disciple was later hospitalized was the effect. This was the law of cause and effect which is quite simple. We had done many things in the past. Because we could not remember what we had done, so when karmic retribution happened, we did not accept it. Everyone says they believe in Buddha. The most important thing of believing in Buddha is to deeply believe in the law of cause and effect. Simply speaking, if we gave a kind smile to others, the virtuous cause would have been generated. If we spoke offensive words to others, the bad cause would have been produced, and the bad result would appear sooner or later eventually. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often turned bad luck into good fortune in this life. This is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was often kind to others. This kind of virtuous causes might have been planted more than ten years ago. So the law of cause and effect is the focus of Buddhism. If you do not believe in the law of cause and effect and only hope that you are lucky, then this violates the natural laws of the whole universe. Now, even scientists speak about the law of cause and effect and have proved that the law of cause and effect actually exist. Therefore, as a modern man and a learned man, if you still have a superstitious belief that all of the unfortunate things happened to you are unlucky or are caused by others, you are then not qualified to say that you are a Buddhist.

A single thought can let us become a Buddha or a Bodhisattva; a single thought can also let us fall into hell. Descending to hell or Ascending to heaven are not controlled by other people, but are decided by you yourself. If your thoughts are evil, your behaviors are evil, or your words are bad, you have the causes of falling into hell. So for all attendees here, when coming to learn Buddhism, you should never deceive your family members including husband, wife, or parents. If your family opposes you to come to learn Buddhism, you should not come first. Do not use any deceptive method. If you deceive them, you will break your precept and lose your compassion and Bodhicitta. If your family cannot accept your behaviors of practicing Buddhism, you should first examine yourself to see why the family cannot accept instead of blaming them. Do not listen to other people’s words that your husband is here to hinder you to learn Buddhism or you owed him from past generations of lives. These kinds of statements are wrong. If you had not had any favor or resentment with him, how would you become his relative in this life? He hindered you to practice Buddhism because there must be some things you had not done well. Do not listen to other people’s words that if you recite more Great Compassion Mantra and dedicate the merits to him, he will not hinder you to learn Buddhism. This is witchcraft. If you have changed and improved yourself, he will naturally let you practice Buddhism. After you have understood the basic movements, behaviors, and thinking, the Chod dharma conducted later by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will then be able to benefit you. If you still use the thinking of non-Buddhism to attend this puja and only asked for your own worldly interests, the blessings you receive from this puja will be limited.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to conduct the Chod dharma.

After conducting the dharma perfectly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then enlightened the attendees, “hope that those who have children do not let their children eat meat again.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told us a story. Not long ago a believer came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The believer had a four years old child. His child was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital due to a cold. After the cold was cured, however, the child’s lower body was unable to move. The doctor said that the illness was caused by virus invasion. When going to the hospital to bless the child, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the father whether he had brought the child to a beach and let him eat a meat bought from a street vendor ten days prior to the onset of the illness. The child’s father admitted that these things actually happened. This child got this illness because he had eaten this meat. You now fear that your children do not have enough nutrition all day long. In fact, you are harming your children by letting them eat meat. Those who have studied medicine and science know that currently there are many antibiotics, hormones, and other inexplicable drugs in the meat. You always gave your child to eat some fried chicken and fried pork chop; after eating these meats, your child would grow earlier. Hence, the children of this generation do not have good health and are very easy to get cold or be sick, because they have taken in too many antibiotics and have no antibody in their bodies. They will get ill just by accidentally eating unclean meat, that is, a meat that may be used in worship or an infected meat. The more meat a child eats, the more illnesses he will have. If you do not believe this, you can do experiments on two children in your family; let one child eat meat and let another child have a vegetarian diet; you can then see which child has a better health.

The Buddha has always advised us to be vegetarians. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are vegetarians. All lamas in the whole temple of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang are also vegetarians. You have no reason not to be a vegetarian. You always have plenty of reasons for not having a vegetarian diet. You would say that your husband or mother-in-law did not permit you to be a vegetarian. But if you do not like to eat something, you will tell others very loudly that you do not like to eat it. Even if others would kill you, you would still be unwilling to eat it. You would even spare nothing in turning hostile with others for this. However, why are you like a criminal when you do not eat meat? Hence, the Buddha has said that what you think that is right may be wrong. We should not break our Buddhist principles to accommodate the ways of the world. Your family may oppose you to be a vegetarian for several reasons. One is that they are afraid of you becoming a monk or a nun. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche neither asked you to become a monk or a nun nor asked you not to take care of your family. Why couldn’t you clearly tell your family this important point? No wonder your practice of Buddhism caused quarrels in your family. Practicing Buddhism is a good thing; and it is unreasonable that practicing Buddhism will cause quarrels in your family. Those other people who are Catholics will tell people loudly that they believe in Catholicism. But why are you afraid to say so? You are afraid that if you tell others you are a vegetarian, others will treat you as a freak and not ask you to go out. You have to remember that “like attracts like”. What kind of person you are, you would get together with what kind of person. If you are a very devout Buddhist, you will naturally get together with good people. If your mind does not believe in Buddhism and still has doubts, there will be a lot of people showing up around you to hinder you from practicing Buddhism and there will be many reasons to prevent you from learning Buddhism. This is because your mind does not have sufficient confidence in the Buddha. Why don’t you have sufficient faith in the Buddha’s teachings? That is because you are opinionated; you think you are very smart and competent, and have a lot of knowledge to understand such that you have doubts to the Buddha’s words. The Buddha has said in all Buddhist scriptures that what the Buddha says is true and the Buddha will not deceive us for any reason. Buddha wanted us to keep the Five Precepts. One of the precepts is that we should not tell lies. So then how will the Buddha’s words lie to us? Today, you have doubts to the Buddha’s words because you still do not deeply believe in the law of cause and effect.

You often said that you believe in the Buddha, but you did not believe in the Buddha. Believing in the Buddha is that you believe in the Buddha’s teachings, faithfully practice and use them in your daily lives. Practicing Buddhism will not conflict with your life. Do not separate your practice of Buddhism with your daily lives. Separating them is wrong. Buddha dharma is our way of life. If Buddha dharma is not used in life, even if you can recite mantras, have taken refuge, have visited many temples, and have met many Rinpoches, it will be useless. This is because you have not integrated Buddha dharma into your life. Therefore, today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tells you seriously that if you deceive your wife or husband for coming here to learn Buddhism, it would be better if you do not come. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche do not like this the most. If your practice of Buddhism today causes other people to slander Buddhism, it is your faults and your sins. The person who slanders the Buddha does not have the fault because it is you who cause him to do so. For all disciples, if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that you use deceptive ways for the purpose of practicing Buddhism, please leave because deception is not the method the Buddha taught us. What the Buddha taught us is to speak the truth. “A straight mind is the place of practicing Buddha dharma.” We do not need to swindle donations, or to coax and cheat people for achieving our own goals; and we have to speak true and real things to others. Acting this way, we are then true Buddhists. Otherwise, we are still engaged in bad habits which will cause evil karma. The Buddha did not teach us to deceive others for the purpose of practicing Buddhism.

Let’s review the story of Huineng who is the Sixth and Last Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. Although he had inherited the mantle and alms bowl from the Fifth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. Before the appropriate time of his preaching Buddhism, he hided in the mountain and lived with hunters for more than 16 years. He kept the patience and did not kill the sentient beings. He ate only vegetable that cooked with meat. That was a kind of convenience, but it was not casualness. When learning Buddhism, you must have the firm confidence to Buddha. When we encounter the obstacle or trouble, you have to conquer it with your mind. You have to follow in accord with conditions not to give it up or cheating. Huineng could live with hunters for more than 16 years, no one knew that he is the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. But his mind was firm without change, that was why he could be a Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. The way of learning Buddhism is to learn and pay attention for the deeds of those saints, it is not self-righteous. Why do you need to read the biography of Jetsun Milarepa? That is because that you have to learn and pay attention for that when he learned the Buddhism, what was his intention to learn Buddhism? What is your intention for learning Buddhism? Why did Jetsun Milarepa mention that as long as you read his biography with respectful mind, you will gain the blessings of Jetsun Milarepa? That is because when you are reading his biography with respectful mind, you are learning the mind of Jetsun Milarepa, therefore Jetsun Milarepa will bestow the blessings to you. It means that you are not merely in the mind of reading fairy story.

When we learning Buddhism, we need a example to follow up. You may choose the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as the example of learning Buddhism, but you have not attained this level to learn the deeds of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The best ways are to take the example for the deeds of those saints and your guru. That is the clear direction to follow up, don’t be self-righteous to try your own way or think yourself only. It is not appropriate to explain or analyze the instructions of your guru with your own reason. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has mentioned for many times: No matter what His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang has mentioned, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always say “Yes” never say” NO”. Is it superstition? It is definitely not. The definition of superstition means that you believe a guru without going through thinking. Before you taking refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had told you how to examine an qualified guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also told you that you can stay here if you thought Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a qualified guru, if it is negative, you can leave. But you do not have the double-minded after making decision. If you still have other notions, you have better to go away. There are many people always look and search for a guru whole life because they would like to find out the most ideal guru in their mind. That would be in vain. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also had mentioned before, there was only one guru for him when he learned Esoteric Buddhism and Exoteric Buddhism.

When you go home, you have to carefully review what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have mentioned today. Like the mantra just recited, there was one sentence: We do not know when the death will be coming; we will waste this time of being a human being when we did not grasp the opportunity of this life. The death is like the shadow following us, don’t think that you will be died after 70 or 80 years old. You will not make up your mind to learn Buddhism actually if you were not aware that the “impermanence” is always there. What is impermanence? Changing anytime and any second! You encountered the troubles when you learning Buddhism, because you did not believe the impermanence. You always thought that it is constant. Constant thing is no change. If you were studying the science, you would understand that there was no constant thing for the worldly things. Some of you have the wrong ideas” I must borrow some money to let my son can do business” You would think that this is the way to love him; actually you are harming him and also doing the evil deeds for yourself. You have no the ability to borrow the money, at last you will be own someone for the money. How can you repay the debit? The worldly people are so ignorant, thinking that it is necessary to help the family members. Helping him is to let him understand the principles of ethics and morals. If ones have no ability or merits, he will consume it all even if you have given lots of money. When you have already realized the principle of impermanence, you must accept it and always keep in your mind not to give up any opportunity for learning Buddhism, therefore you will concentrate you attention. Otherwise you would chat with your son when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was enlightening the Dharma.

The life is impermanence that was enlightened by Buddha, like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche aforementioned before, Buddha never cheat or threaten us which is just the truth. Just like a friend of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the Kunming, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew and told him that his friend would be endangered during he was 41 years old to 43 years old. But he did not take notice of the advice from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Suddenly he was died. He could meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche every month, for your point of view; he would not die because there would be blessings bestowed by Rinpoche when meeting with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. That is not the case! You have to practice it by yourself. Even if a disciple of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to practice by oneself. Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can only help us but they can not eliminate your karma. You have to do it by yourself. All the instructions form Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, we have to follow up accordingly. It is unable to be discounted. Don’t forget that impermanence is like the shadow adhering us. Impermanence does not mean the death; it means that it is a change. When you are living in the auspicious days, you have to be careful that the bad day will be coming soon. When you are living in the suffering days, don’t worry, it would be possible that the good day may be appeared. A disciple took a female to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and complained how suffering she was. But the female was not much suffering than those sentient beings just came in, originally she did not feel suffering, but when the female disciple complaining, she immediately felt how suffering she was. You thought that you are doing a good guy, but actually it would be harmful to someone even if you did not know before. You have no the ability to see how many sentient beings had come, how long they have waited for today’s opportunity to leave the ghost realm.

Your lives are not suffering at all, because you have the merits to listen to the Dharma, have foods to eat, have the clothes to wear, you are living in good days. In the period of living good days, you must remind yourself, good thing and bad thing is simultaneously happening. Therefore you must be aware of your body, speech, and mind not to do evil deeds for each second. As long as you can refrain from committing evil deeds and to carry out virtuous ones, your life will be changed indeed. You must know one thing; we must have done lots of evil deeds for our previous lives. Otherwise what we rebirth for? We would have been re-birthed at the Pure Land of Buddha Amitabha. There were so many evil deeds for our previous lives, could you believe that they would be eliminated or changed just merely by those little good deeds? It is impossible unless you have made up your mind to refrain from committing evil deeds immediately. What is to refrain from committing evil deeds? Take actions according to the teaching of Dharma, this is the beginning of the virtues ones. This is a real practitioner to learn the Buddhism. If you could not achieve it, all Dharma you have listened, it would be merely the merits for your future life; you are unable to be liberated from reincarnation. If you did not follow the instructions by Buddhas and guru to reduce your vexation, all Dharma you have learned, you would be re-birthed as a pet for your future life. You have saw lots of pets which would have taken refuge and learned Buddhism for their previous lives. What is the reason for becoming the pet? It is because that they are stupidity not to accept the real meaning of Dharma, only gain the merits bestowed by Buddhas. They have the body of animal because of the stupidity. They become the pets because of the merits they have accumulated for their previous lives; therefore they are embraced and bred up for whole life.

That is the important thing if you did not distinguish the correct attitude to learn Buddhism, you will not be liberated from reincarnation in the six realms. It is a very delicate situation, because there’s only one hairbreath between the two things. When you realize it, you have the opportunity to be liberated from reincarnation right away. You must repeat to listen the dharma audio-recording of Thirty-Seven Buddhist Practices, not only one time you would understand it. Even Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still practicing Thirty-Seven Buddhist Practices. If you thought that you could understand it only listening it one time, it means that you were superior to your guru? Go home to listen it again and to find out what is different from your life style with the Thirty-Seven Buddhist Practices. If there is something wrong, you must immediately correct it. Do not think that it would be complete when you have listened to the dharma audio-recording of Thirty-Seven Buddhist Practices. You must take actions after you have understood of it. Do not treat Dharma as a kind of knowledge. The Gate of Explanation is to understand dharma teaching. The Gate of Practice is the action to practice dharma which must be implemented in your daily life. It is more important for the Gate of Practice than the Gate of Explanation.

In all the past dynasties of those saints, most of them were not familiar with the explanation of dharma in the beginning of learning Buddhism. But they implemented the dharma in the daily life, they could realize everything afterward. Huineng who was the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism could not recognize the Chinese characters. But afterward he implemented dharma in the daily life, he could explained the dharma naturally. Another example is Master Guang Qin who could not recognize the Chinese characters as well, but no one could dare to claim that he would have not attain the achievement? All of you treat Dharma as a kind of knowledge to research which will be the wrong direction! But right now there is a phenomenon in Taiwan: Someone clings to research or study the Dharma, but he did not implement dharma in the daily life. All the Saints including your guru always told you that it is not necessary to delve into the meaning of each word in the Dharma when reading Dharma. You just only sincerely read it by your mind, one day, you will realize the contents of Dharma just like suddenly to see the whole thing in a clear light. If you explain the contents of Dharma only by the words or language, that is wrong, because you just merely translate the words from other words. That is why Buddha mentioned that Dharma is extensive and abstruse which does not mean that you can not fully understand it or it is very mysterious. It means that the contents of Dharma are meaningful and profound which depends on the levels of realization by each person. Just like the Prajnaparamita Sutra need to be reiterated which might take one year long to enlighten the meaning of this Sutra. Why did guru need to enlighten the same Sutra again? It is because that the object of cognition has changed. Therefore it will be incorrigible if you thought that you can understand after listening to Dharma audio-recording no more than three times. It means that you did not implement the guru’s Dharma audio-recording in the daily life. You just treated it as a knowledge to remember it only.

Therefore, listen and pay attention on the 37 Practices of Buddhists. Use it to inspect your conducts in daily life; correct your own conducts accordingly if you find any difference. Don’t say that I have heard or I learned. You usually have a conception that the Dharma, taught by high level practitioners, must be a different one. The truth is the Dharma is the same, which is a method to escape from cyclic death and birth. Although, you may feel different, because you are taught according to your own capacity and conditions; its theories, principles and stages are the same to everyone. Buddha said that why there are the three yanas of Buddhist teaching is according to the causes and conditions in the world. Each and every Yana of the Buddha Dharma does aim to guide all the beings to attain Buddhahood. But, one may wonder why there are such many practices and methods? Because, the capacity of any individual differs from the others. You have a conception that the more you learn the teachings the more you will attain? It’s false, because you are not qualified as a guru. A guru would need to understand and to practice various teachings, as he will face with different types of people. You, as a general disciple, shall cultivate yourself steadily through one Dharma method, regardless that you are aspired to escape form cyclic birth and death for your own, for your friends or for the other beings. “Relying on one method to cultivate your mind towards Buddhahood” is not about selecting a practice for the cultivation. For example, some people take the notion that reciting Amitabha or reciting Avalokiteshvara is the one method to be relied on; incorrect! As a Buddhist disciple, one decides to follow the guru’s teachings, and also one diligently takes the practices given by the guru. The disciple has to concentrate on the guru’s teachings without any divert ion, nor any doubt.

Tibetan Buddhism has a broad coverage of the theories, including well-known lineages and schools such as the Tiantai School, the Flower Garland tradition, the Madhyamaka tradition, the Zen School, as well as the Pure Land Buddhism. Briefly, in Tibetan Buddhism, one could find all the Dharma that Buddha had disseminated; and, there are four lineages but they are not separated by schools. Thus, the guru could teach you Zen practices or teach you reciting Buddha names according to your capacity. Even more, if you are of some kind that must be hit or scolded, the guru also could teach you. The Dharma could be learned through different methods. These methods shall not be classified into different levels; instead, the methods are for people of different capacity and the fruition of the practice has no difference. If one thinks that some method is more profound than the others or some people are more capable than the other ones, then it cannot be referred as Dharma because what it tells is conceptual thoughts. What it tells is only about your connections with the masters, or your interests in learning the guru’s teachings. When you go home, you should take some time to contemplate on your hearings today.

Never feed your children with meat as best as you could. They will only be benefited, and don’t be afraid of lacking any nutrition. Nowadays, children have become harder to be cultivated. Why? Because, children are fed with milk powder which is produced from cows. You may feel that children are becoming more reluctant to follow your guidance, even if you try very hard. People may have some certain similar characteristics about the food they have taken. Modern medicine claims that mother’s milk can have healthier effect, it does? It’s not true; but rather, the child’s characteristic will be gradually changed by the mother. Therefore, if one takes milk in his youth and takes meat after growing up, what is the outcome? One’s characteristics would be more analogous to animals. Have you ever seen that a pig or a cow would stay calmly? That’s why your children intend to move back and forth all day, since you have raised them in such methods. Therefore, you shall not complain about your children; like monsters, they are raised by yourself. When you go home today, you shall contemplate today’s hearings. Taking vegetarian diet has no any guilt. Today, many people in western countries, including the highly civilized USA, have adopted vegetarian diet. The actual situation tells us that more and more highly educated people would take vegetarian diet. On the contrary, some people adhere to a misconception that eating meat is what rich men do. If you have a chance to travel around USA or France, you will observe that more of the people of higher educated has adopted vegetarian diet. You shall decide. What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche talked about today is not meant for scolding you. Think about it further, diseases such as SARS are rooted from taking meat at all.

October 16, 2010

From 4:30 PM to 10:30 PM , Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 163 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

October 17, 2010

At the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious regular puja, bestowing the enlightenment about the essence and function of mind. After the puja was completed perfectly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to receive 43 believers till after 6 PM, helping them to relieve worldly sufferings and giving enlightenment about the Buddha Dharma.

Before the puja, a male disciple reported the story of how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had liberated his father’s consciousness. In the morning of October 3 this year, the day of “Drikung Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism’s Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses, “ his father committed suicide by hanging himself at home. Those who committed suicide would certainly fall into Avichi Hell. But fortunately the day his father died was the day of the Great Puja such that his father was able to be liberated to a virtuous land, which was all due to the compassionate, powerful, and kind performance of liberation conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Moreover, after cremation, the crown of his father’s scull appeared a small round hole, which was the auspicious sign indicating the consciousness was perfectly liberated.

Regardless that the timing of taking refuge was early or recent, all disciples must have been greatly helped by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Needless speaking of this disciple who had taken refuge for more than ten years since 1999, he had already received immense kindness from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has earnestly and kindly taught that a genuine Buddhist disciple must be the one who would change his body, speech and mind, he must have not done so, not to mention without even fulfilling superficial Buddhist practices. Because of this, he has almost caused his father to enter the terrible Avichi Hell. Additionally, he had troubled his guru to mentally and physically work hard to liberate his father. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once taught that a qualified disciple wouldn’t distract his guru to take care of him. Those who can’t follow this principle are vicious persons.

More than ten years ago, his girlfriend (now his wife who also took refuge) planned to be ordained. When his wife brought him to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great influence, his wife had changed her mind and obtained appropriate understanding about the Buddha Dharma. His girlfriend, therefore, didn’t leave him and accept him. When they got married, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held their hands, meaning to give his wife over to him. In this sense, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had granted him a wife. Due to the lead of his wife, he was able to get in contact with this auspicious, pure and clean Buddhist center, closely follow Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and be shone by Buddhist light of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

In 2000 when he and his wife decided to get married and they went to report this decision to the guru, the guru compassionately suggested him stay in Taipei. Afterwards, the guru reprimanded him about the idea of moving back to southern Taiwan to live with his parents. Such thought was only fake filial piety because he simply wanted to save some living cost. In light of the incident occurred on October 3, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reprimand was to the point that his conducts were indicative of not only fake filial piety but also to the extreme. Thus, his father would chose such a way to end his own life.

Being married for more than ten years, he and his wife has been living a happy and peaceful life. Because of his ignorance, inability, and not knowing how to cherish merits, he was not able to let his father witness the auspicious merits and virtuousness of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nor was he able to let his father’s faith and respectfulness in the Buddha Dharma arise. He is not qualified to be a son or a disciple. When in peace and happiness, he was not able to bring his parents and other family members to accept the Buddha Dharma taught by the guru. He has been such a selfish and living in a fool’s paradise.

After two years of marriage, because of the merits of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, their son was born. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately held the child and gave him his name. In this sense, the child was also granted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. They, however, was not even paying the least courtesy. During the ages of 8 months and 4 years, the child had been suffering from severe atopic dermatitis. Great area of his limbs and surface skin had been ulcerated, like fish being fried or meat rotten. Without the help of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the four years, the child would already die from various symptoms such as sepsis. Even he has received Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s grace time and again, he was not able to genuinely make repentance. Nor did he learn how to make repentance on behalf of his parents. As a result, such a vicious karmic fruit was manifested.

Repeatedly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has granted to him opportunities and grace. He, nonetheless, was not only insensitive but also simply played ignorant. Due to the mercy of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinpoche timely transferred his father’s consciousness at 9 AM when his father hung on the day of the Great Puja. In June 2010, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche originally refused to accept their offering. But at that time, his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer of the third stage. The couple implored for the chance to make offering on behalf of their parents. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately agreed and accepted their modest offering. In July 2010, he persuaded his father travelled from Jia-Yi to meet with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Even his father had not accumulated sufficient faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinpoche had bestowed blessing onto his father for a long while. The next day when his father returned to Jia-Yi to undergo regular medical check, the index of prostate cancer was reduced to 1.6 from 1.9. His father had not experienced physical pain due to his prostate cancer at the final six month of his life. Although he knew his father’s anxiety and fear, he only prayed the guru for reducing his father’s physical pain rather than calming his unsettling and nervous mind because of his ignorance and avoidance of trouble. His father’s suicide was the vicious consequence of his behaviors.

His gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can’t be described in words. During the 7 days of the preparing for the funeral, his family, including four sisters, brother-in-laws, and nephews, were able to manage a variety of matters in peace. His mother was also able to feel settled. An aunt who has been working in a funeral home also said that the atmosphere of the funeral was very special, meaning that no sense of sadness and mourning was sensed. For the family of someone committing suicide, they would be overshadowed by their miseries. All these were granted to them due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great power and grace. Please take his example in mind. For those who don’t believe in the law of cause and effect and those who don’t learn the Buddha Dharma accordingly, there will be some serious and horrible karmic retributions occurred to them.

Then a disciple went up before everyone to report other schools’ Khenpos and masters’ praises and admirations for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. They attendee the auspicious grand puja conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on October, 3rd. An attendee of Khenpo of Nyingmapa said he was really shocked and impressed when he entered the venue. He never thought there would be so many people coming to attend the sublime grand Tibetan Buddhist tantric puja. He highly praised: “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, your guru, is of true and great mercy and compassion! Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, your guru, perfectly completed such a great task, that is, to organize this grand puja!” This disciple told this Khenpo: “Those participants of October 3rd as well as the past five year’s grand pujas held by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche came to attend the great puja simply by word of mouth of the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, or by their relatives and friends’ invitation. Hearing this, the Khenpo replied: “So many attendees came to this puja without seeing or hearing any advertisement or publicity is the auspicious sign that signifies your guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mercy and compassion! This is extremely extraordinary! It implies that because of your guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s merciful and compassionate heart, so many people came to attend the auspicious great tantric puja without seeing or hearing any advertisement or publicity!” He mentioned in particular: “Only to hold a puja in this way is truly to hold a puja in Buddhist way. It’s also the true orthodox dharma!” Right after saying that, he made a comparison between the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and his own guru — His Holiness Penor Rinpoche, the head of the Nyingma order. He said that His Holiness Penor Rinpoche does not conduct any propaganda as well.

Furthermore, this Khenpo said that he originally thought the dharma conductor would be a Tibetan Rinpoche, but when he stepped into the venue he discovered it is a Han Rinpoche. This disciple also shared the information with the Khenpo that, in 2007, the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was appointed and led by His Holiness Drikung Chetsang to perfectly complete the practice of the three-month retreat of Hevajra in Lapchi Snow Mountains. This is unprecedented in Drikung Kagyu order as well as for His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to personally lead a Rinpoche, even is the one who practices Hevajra, to perfect the retreat. It is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the first one in the Drikung Kagyu order. In addition, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a lay guru. Hearing this, the Khenpo highly admired and said: “Your guru is a lay yogi just like Marpa!”Then he said: “Your guru is a true yogi!” This disciple continued to share with the Khenpo: “In the year when the gilded roofs of the Drikung Thil Monastery were broken, His Holiness Drikung Chetsang particularly instructed our guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to restore it. At that time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not have money. But he right away promised His Holiness Drikung Chetsang. Moreover, His Holiness Drikung Chetsang prophesied that: “After the completion of restoration of the gilded roofs of the Drikung Thil Monastery, it then will be…” Even before the disciple completed the sentence, the Khenpo had his words by saying: “It will be the second time for the order to flourish!” Obviously the Khenpo of other order really knows the business.

This disciple also told him that on the day of puja, not long after three o’clock in the midnight, an earthquake occurred. The Khenpo immediately said that: it is stated in the Sutra that at the moment Buddha Sakyamuni attains Buddhahood and enlightenment, there appears an auspicious sign of an earthquake occurrence. It is also marvelously auspicious sign for it to occur before such a great puja in particular. Furthermore, he mentioned that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche repeatedly advised the attendees in the puja to adopt vegetarian diets, which is really an important thing. The disciple also talked to him that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always enlightened on the dharma throne that Jigten Sumgon, the founder of Drikung Kagyu lineage, His Holinesses, lamas, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche all abstain from eating meat. The Khenpo said in praises that it is really wonderful! Furthermore, seeing many disciples playing instruments on the spot, the Khenpo thought it may be Tibetans who were blowing instruments. The disciple told him those instrument players were all Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples. Even the tormas placed on the mandala were made by disciples under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s step-by-step instructions. Moreover, all things to be set up in the venue, including its arrangement, the process of how to receive and guide the believers were taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during the weekly meetings. This Khenpo pleasantly surprised and praised: “It is very amazingly great that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches disciples how to make tormas and play instruments. As now there are fewer and fewer ordained people, he really appreciated that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could extend the true Tibetan Buddhist traditions. The disciple furthermore told the Khenpo that when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first time met with His Holiness Drikung Chetsang, His Holiness Drikung Chetsang took his own Buddha’s beads to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to hold another side, and transmitted Vajrasattva to him.  For this, the Nyingma Khenpo highly praised and said: “This is all due to the auspicious karmic relationship of past lives, so they have today’s conditions.

Another participant who was an Exoteric Buddhist master said in praises that he admired our guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. As he had attended various pujas for transferring consciousness, he had never heard a practitioner but our guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who dares to say: “The consciousness today have all obtain transferred!”In that great puja with auspicious tantric dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dared to say: “The consciousness today have all obtain transferred!” It is really amazing! He’d never heard it before. But today, as the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dared to speak it, he is absolutely able to do it. For this, this participant really felt admirable!

Besides, all the pujas of the Great Indiscriminated Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousness presided over by the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for six years have been attended by more than 74,000; and the name lists of beings for liberation was up to over 241,000. According to average market quotation, a name for liberation costs NT$ 1,000. Therefore, the total cost for over 241,000 names could be over 240,000,000! Nevertheless, all of the pujas organized by our guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are free of charge for entrance fee and for listing the names for liberation. Just think about how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche propagates Buddhism without seeking for fame and wealth, and regardless of his own life. We have immense gratitude to guru!

Then, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended to the throne and bestowed teachings: To continue to explain the great Gampopa’s teachings on the mind, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will give teachings on the form or the essence of mind today, following the teaching on the appearance of the mind expounded in the previous puja.

As long as we continue to have heartbeat and breathing, we naturally generate egoistic thoughts in our minds. You see everything with your consciousness, experiences, and self-attachment. With self-attachment, one will never reveal primordial light of his mind. We generate every thought out of selfishness in order to protect ourselves. In the Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows, it says that every single thought an ordinary being generates is karma as well as a crime. It is because that the sentient beings only think for themselves. The crime does not refer to the original sin clamed by other religions, nor does it refer to the mistake that one has made. In Buddhism, the crime refers to the fact that one fails to employ the Buddhist teachings he has learned to liberate himself from the reincarnation and, moreover, to help liberate others. Even a trivial virtue or evil would generate karma, which serves as the driving force of the reincarnation.

To have self-attachment is not to have subjective opinions. Even when one has objective opinions and becomes less egoistic, he still has the idea of self, i.e. self-attachment. With such thinking, you differentiate between the subject and the object and analyze the benefits or damage that the matter might bring to you. As you are unable to learn, to conduct, or to achieve the practice of self-renunciation, you should listen to and carry out the teachings of the guru, the Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas.

Recently, a group of people would go to pujas of Tibetan Buddhism to distribute controversial propaganda. During the evaluation meeting for this year’s Amitabha puja for transferring consciousness, a male disciple made a suggestion on this issue, saying that we should ask the participants not to take such propaganda in advance. The disciple has thought over the issue with his ego, too, and thus gave such a suggestion. He merely thought that he had to solve the problem soon and tried to avoid the trouble. Nevertheless, he never thought that participants of the great puja come at their own will. They are all different and have different opinions. If they are asked not to take the propaganda, maybe some of them will guess if the Buddhist center has something to hide, or feel that the Buddhist center is dictatorial. As everything sentient being has their own karmic connections, it is their cause and condition that enable them to take, see, or to handle the material. He appeared to have thought for the Buddhist center by trying to protect the center and the Buddhist teachings. Nonetheless, he essentially wanted to avoid being hurt. He failed to think for the guru and the Lineage or carry out the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas. Therefore, such thinking is still self-attachment.

This morning, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche called someone to get a telephone number. The first disciple that was called said he had no idea and said that another person might know. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche called the person, who then said that he did not know but the former person should know. Hence, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had to make 3 calls in order to get a telephone number. The reason why such a circumstance took place lay in that no one was taking the responsibility. They both tried to have each other take on the responsibility, thinking that they had done well enough by providing further information about the issue. You constantly act like this in life and in work. When you claim your ignorance and say that others know, you actually know about it. However, you have not tried to memorize the information, so you said you didn’t know in order to shed your responsibility, trying to protect yourself. When His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang bids Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to do something, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche might need further information but would never claim himself knowing nothing about the matter. Instead, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would promise to take care of the issue at once.

You often say that you need to communicate with others so as to reach consensus by knowing thoughts of one another. However, if you think carefully, to communicate with others is actually to ask others to accept your thinking. Isn’t it your self-attachment? However, to renounce self-attachment is not to avoid any thought when dealing with matters. If you do whatever others tell you to do, including evil doings, you will become an ignorant person!

At completion of the puja, you saw Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche step down from the throne and ride on an electric car to cleanse all the participants with nectar, making large moves with a bunch of auspicious grass for 40 minutes. Though the movements might appear to be simple, they actually consumed a lot of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s energy. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has chronic diseases in the joints of his arm. Why could Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche make it? It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has abandoned his ego. If you still have doubt, you can try this out at home. If you continue to swing your hand, you will not be able to take it in 5 minutes. If you continue the movements for 30 minutes, you will need a plaster cast next day.

What’s more, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is 63 years old. Although you saw Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche standing in the car, there isn’t enough room for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to balance and transfer weight properly. The bunch of auspicious grass that the disciples had prepared was long and thick and got really heavy with nectar when it was swung. Even a young person like you might not be able to lift your arm after swinging it for 5 minutes. If you do it for 40 minutes, you might need to rest for two weeks. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is in his sixties, why could Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, with severe scoliosis, have such strength to cleanse the participants for consecutive 40 minutes? This was truly a manifestation of the loving kindness and compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not think of himself at all and gave at seeing the sentient beings’ needs. Even two doctors of the Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine Clinic hurried to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s lounge after the cleansing, thinking that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s arm must have broken. Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did feel tired at completion of the cleansing, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recovered his strength merely an hour thereafter. If you had been Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, you might need a plaster cast for your hand. If you have doubt, you may as well try it out with a broom at home. Why could Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recover so quickly? It was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s loving kindness and compassion were revealed. Loving kindness and compassion are the greatest powers in the universe. Because of having loving kindness and compassion, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche even suffers less from illnesses than an ordinary person. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not feel the suffering when having skin cancer and would not cough severely or have a high fever even with a cold. With his great powers of loving kindness and compassion, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is then able to transfer the consciousnesses of those who committed suicides.

To have loving kindness and compassion is not merely to carry out virtuous deeds or to be a good person. It is what makes one a human being. As the saying goes, “The Buddhist path will form when one becomes a person.” It means that one has to fulfill the requirements of a human being first before he can step onto the path to Buddhahood. The requirements include abiding by the Five Commandments and Ten Meritorious Acts. If one fails to meet such requirements, he is not even qualified to be a person, not to mention to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Because you cannot break from the persistence of you yourself, you cannot attain the state of “great mercy of the void condition, great compassion of the equal body”. The word “void” in the verse of “great mercy of the void condition” does not mean nothing. If there is no condition, one cannot be liberated. The void condition means that when sentient beings ask for help, the power of mercy will emerge to help them; when the sentient beings have been away from the sufferings, the power will then no longer exist. For example, the act that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sprinkled nectar water over and purified the attendees in the Great puja was the display of “great mercy of the void condition”. So when the sprinkle and purification was completed, the pains of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s hand also disappeared very quickly. The “void condition” here does not mean “no condition”; it means the principle that dependent origination is void of nature.

“Great compassion of the equal body” means that one can truly understand the suffering of sentient beings. When you saw a stray dog, some of you would cry. This was not compassion, but your own feeling and persistence, because when you saw a homeless person, you would not cry. Similarly, when your family member was seriously ill, you felt endless misery and extreme pain; but when you saw other people’s family members got ill, you did not feel sad; you just felt that this had nothing to do with you. When your family member died, you would feel sad; but when you saw other people’s funerals on the street, you did not feel sorrowful. When seeing the death of people of your own nation, you would be sorrowful; when seeing the death of people of other nations, you would not have the same sorrow. These were because you still have distinguished minds. When you can take away the concept of “I” and have no persistence of you yourself, you can then attain the mind of mercy and compassion. You have to attain the level of no distinction on your appearance, other people’s appearances, and sentient beings’ appearances, you can then understand that you and the sentient beings are the same. This is the great compassion of the equal body. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the Phowa dharma to help the deceased people, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had the great compassion of the equal body and could feel the sentient beings’ sufferings, he could then help to liberate the deceased people. A practitioner who has not attained the great compassion of the equal body cannot liberate sentient beings, even if the skin of his lip is broken due to long hours of reciting mantra.

If you think “I want to become a Buddha”, this idea is wrong; this is the persistence of your ego and is also a devil’s mind. Why do we want to attain Buddhahood? Because sentient beings are suffering, we want to attain Buddhahood to benefit sentient beings and to help sentient beings liberate. We do not attain Buddhahood for ourselves. If you think you are practicing, this idea still has the concept of “I”. As long as you still have this kind of thinking, your mind is distinguishing. If you still has the thought that “I am practicing”, you will then fall into the realm of Asura because of this arrogant mind. A true practitioner will not say that he have attained achievements by himself; he will say that his achievements are from the guru’s teachings and blessings. When you recite mantra or worship Buddhas, all of you use your consciousnesses to perform them, but not your minds. You know that reciting mantra or worshiping Buddhas would be beneficial, so you perform them. This is the function of your consciousness. You do not do them out of a true mind of only for benefiting sentient beings and asking for nothing.

Reciting mantras, reading sutras, or prostrating before Buddhas are just conditions to help your practice, but they are not the true practice. The true practice is to correct all of your behaviors which will let you fall into the cyclic existence. This is not a matter that can be done within one or two days. This requires a very long time to achieve and cannot be attained just by your own claims. For a practitioner like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who has attained the mind of mercy and compassion, all of his thoughts, speeches, and actions are for benefiting others. It is very difficult to do this and you cannot achieve it. Hence, why do we need a guru? This is because we need the guru’s supervision and guidance to prevent us from going the wrong way on the path of practicing Buddha dharma.

There is a female believer who had once taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche but was cast out later from the Buddhist center by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not give her the permission to attend this year’s great puja. During the great puja on October 3th, she entered the venue without permission by taking chances and hid among the attendees. Later, she was found by the disciple volunteers. In today’s puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her why she had slipped into the great puja without a ticket. She found an excuse and said that a ticket had been given to her by a disciple. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche rebuked her immediately that she evaded her fault by blaming a new disciple who had not fully understood the situation and might let others be punished by her actions. Even without permission, she tried every means to enter the venue. However, in fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche unexpectedly let all those who were waiting outside enter the venue later. The fact that she did not comply with the rules established by the Buddhist center indicated that she did not listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s words. Originally because of her daughter’s continuous imploration, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then allowed her to come back and attend the Sunday regular puja again. But she was still disobedient and did not follow the rules. She let a dozen volunteer disciples search for her in the great puja. If they did not find her, these volunteer disciples would have been reprimanded by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. On the spot, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her to leave and disallowed her to attend today’s puja; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also enlightened her that if you were disobedient, it would be useless for you to attend pujas again! Her behaviors were still originated by the concept of “I”. She thought “I” wanted to attend the puja, you were not compassionate to let “ME” attend, and that if “I” attended the great puja, “I” would have enough virtues and my daughter would then give “ME” more money to spend.

Asking you to listen to the guru’s words is very difficult. In the modern society, teachers can apply neither corporal punishment nor kneeling punishment to students; a teacher can be sued by doing these at any time. This is because modern people have not had the concept of respect for teachers. You do not listen to a school teacher’s words and you will not even listen to a guru’s words. You thought you just came to listen for learning Buddhism and would not be reprimanded. However, if you are wrong, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will definitely reprimand you. Neither think after listening to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings of Buddha dharma, you can attain achievements by practicing by yourself at home, nor think by attending pujas, you will be blessed and protected, and will attain accomplishments automatically. If that was the case, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be the first one to quit the practice and would rely on His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s blessings all day long. Why would Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche painstakingly perform retreats to practice Buddha dharma? You should not think that it is ok for you to practice just by yourself without a guru’s help. Actually self-practice also has to rely on others; there is no such thing as self-practice. Even if you are self-taught, you must have asked others or seen some reference books. Those whom you have asked or those books are your teachers.

When you took refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened you the importance of praising the guru’s merits. Why do you have to praise the guru’s merits? The guru absolutely does not need your praise. It is because Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru are your role models and your targets for imitation. Asking you to get rid of your ego is very difficult; so by praising the guru’s merits you can then naturally imitate the guru and know what you should do.

The mind is “bright, ethereal, continuous, unperceivable, independent, and naked.” The mind will neither stop nor move; the mind will neither increase, nor decrease. The mind is unperceivable; that is, its existence cannot be detected by the current science. You now feel that you cannot understand what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche talked about. But in fact, you still know. Your mind had been obscured by your ego, so it was usually difficult for you to feel the presence of the mind.

The mind is “bright”. It is just that the brightness of sentient beings’ minds is obscured by the karma, like the black and white clouds which obscure the sunlight in the sky. The black clouds are the evil karma; the white clouds are the virtuous karma. White clouds will obscure the rays of sunlight, not to mention the black clouds. Therefore, we have to eliminate our virtuous karma as well. The brightness of the mind is not visible to the naked eye. When a person has attained the mind of mercy and compassion, the brightness of his mind will appear. Even if the brightness of his mind is not visible to other people’s naked eyes, other people will still feel that this person’s complexion is brighter. You have not achieved the accomplishment of being compassionate. That’s why your faces appear dim. When you mind is bright, you’d look shining from the outside. Such kind of radiance can’t be obtained by applying nutrient lotions. Even if you have applied a lot of lotions and makeup, your faces still appear to be grayish. You can try to experience the feeling the brief moment when you almost fall into sleep, your body and consciousness almost stop function, all six roots also cease to work, and no thought is occurring. Or when you almost wake up, you’d feel a little bit of light. This is the bright nature of mind. Why do so many people suffer from sleeplessness? They have to rely on smoking, drinking alcohol or taking sleeping pills to sleep. This is because their minds are full of thoughts, getting too excited. These thoughts have covered their minds to the extent that the nature of the mind can’t be revealed. A Buddhist practitioner can fall in sleep with a little help of meditation. This is because he has obtained the level of without an “I”, the self.

The term “inspiration” of “emptiness and inspiration” does not refer to efficaciousness or to the response to appeal or need. Sometimes you suddenly have the feeling of being aware of how you should do on the things you’ve never seen or heard. You all have this sort of experience. In fact, it is your heart’s awareness effects, and your heart’s essence manifests. Some people may still fail in exam even though they study diligently. You may say it is because they don’t have a good luck on examination. However, the truth is because their heart is obscured by the mind of gain and loss. You may have ever experienced that when you are taking an exam, for the questions you have never studied about but suddenly the answer comes to you, and that is just the correct answer. This is the heart’s effect. You may also have tried that when you look up to the cloudless sky, you feel so peaceful, without a thought. This is also the heart’s effect. As for the reason why the sky is blue, it is in fact related to tantric dharma. But we won’t give the explanations today.

“Incomprehensibleness” refers to the heart is not comprehensible by human’s common sense, that is, unexplainable with human experiences. It is beyond the fields of experiences and cannot be illustrated. “Continuity” means that the heart always exists; however, due to being effected by eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, thereafter the heart is obscured. “Awareness” refers to clearly understanding about all phenomena of the law of cause and effect. “Nothing on which to reply” means that the heart exists without relying on anything. It is not saying the heart has nothing to depend on.

You often say you want to overcome obstacles. But the truth is that obstacles are not to be overcome. It is certain that we meet obstacles in this life. And it relies on Buddha-dharma’s help for us to step over obstacles. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often enlightens that as long as one practices supramundane dharma well, one will have no problem with mundane dharma. It is just to teach you how to get through various mundane obstacles.

This time the Great Indiscriminate Amitabha Puja for Transferring Consciousnesses presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on October, 3, no journalist was invited to attend, no related news reported. Even there was an official who wanted to attend the puja, he got politely declined due to he couldn’t be present for the entire course. Holding such a big puja is of much virtue. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held it for the sake of his own fame and wealth, it would then become a sort of virtuous karma that could lead to reincarnation in the cyclic existence.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche rejected mass media exposure for this great puja with 20,000 attendees and did not release any information for the press because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche believes that the Buddhist teachings are all about karmic connections. During the lifetime of Lord Jigten Sumgon, without need for any propaganda, 180 thousand people took the ordain vows under Jigten Sumgon. In addition, a city major wanted to attend the puja, but he could only stay for half an hour and was unable to attend the whole puja. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then rejected his participation. An ordinary person would love to have such a political figure, for he or she would bring a lot of reporters as well as free publicity. Nevertheless, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hosted the grand puja with 20,000 participants for the benefit of the sentient beings, instead of his own fame and wealth. Thereby, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche transformed his merits that could have made himself famous and wealthy into powers that help salvage the sentient beings from their reincarnation. That is why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had the confidence that all the sentient beings in need were transferred.

Hosting a grand puja for transferring consciousnesses is a great virtuous deed. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gives up on his own fame and wealth and benefits sentient beings whole-heartedly. Therefore, the virtues accumulated through this year’s great puja did not become virtuous karma that would have turned him into reincarnation and become obstacles in his Buddhist study. The difference is almost indistinguishable, but has a great impact. If one’s conduct becomes virtuous karma, his powers of loving kindness and compassion will not take effect in his practice, nor can he salvage any beings for the benefits of innumerable sentient beings. As long as you are able to attain loving kindness and compassion, you will naturally be protected and are able to achieve many things without even asking for them. Therefore, the greatest obstacle for some practitioners is having fame and wealth. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often said, “The greatest power in the universe is the power of loving kindness and compassion. When one has generated his power of loving kindness and compassion, he will then be able to connect to the great powers of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas so as to help the sentient beings. That was why 20,000 people would show up at the puja without need for any advertisement. All these were manifestations of the great power of loving kindness and compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The more advanced the modern Western medicine is, the more people who are cut or hacked are. From Buddha dharma’s perspective, this is like the knife and sword hell in the hell realm. In the knife and sword hell, you will be cut and sliced and after the wounds are healed you will be cut and sliced again. You will repeatedly suffer the pains of being cut and sliced. It is extremely dreadful. People now also suffer the pains of having three tubes inserted into the body simultaneously. You all believe in Western medicine which only has a history about one or two hundred years. The approach Western medicine takes is that where there is a problem, the doctor will cut where. You can now see some diabetics with one of the legs being but by a doctor of Western medicine on the operating table. Except the heart cannot be but off, a lung can be cut off if your lungs have problems. A kidney can be cut off if you have kidney problems. A small portion of your liver can be cut off if you have liver problems. People think it would be ok to cut off an organ as long as a similar organ remains in the body and can be used. But if we only needed a lung or a kidney, we would have been born with one such organ instead of two. Each organ in human’s body must have its meaning and function. If an organ was cut in half, can the remaining organ operate properly? When being in school, all of you had dissected frogs. When you have a surgery and are anesthetized, you allow yourself to be cut and sliced just like a frog. You have not even been able to solve this evil karma, how can you say you want to practice Buddha dharma and attain Buddhahood?

A Bodhisattva is fearless. You will fear many things, because you are afraid of being harmed and have no mercy and compassion. A person who has attained the mind of mercy and compassion will not fear wherever he goes. This is not because he has a good and extensive knowledge such that he can handle all kinds of situations. It is because he does not have the idea of “I” and is not afraid of being harmed such that he has no fear. After you have attained the mind of mercy and compassion, the bright nature of your mind will be naturally revealed.

Weeks ago, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche transferred the consciousness of a deceased, who had been accompanied by Lu Progenitor of Daoists when they come into presence of the Rinpoche. The family member of the deceased confirmed that the deceased had been an adopted son of Lu Progenitor since his youth; it is why Lu Progenitor would help him. Although, as the progenitor of the Daoists, Lu had also converted to Buddhism and had certain attainment, Lu could not help him escape from cyclic reincarnations because Lu’s practices differed from the Rinpoche’s. Therefore, Lu Progenitor would bring the deceased to the Rinpoche for the rescue.

Before one could achieve awakening, the mind is within the center of one’s body, while the mind would become ubiquitous if one achieves awakening. The truth is demonstrated by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma practice; the Rinpoche performed the Phowa ritual at Japan to liberate the deceased being that was in Taiwan. It tells us that the mind is ubiquitous. As long as the motivation is for the benefit of the beings, anything can be achieved. If one does not cultivate mercy and compassion as the foundation of Buddhist practices, one’s mind will only become useless. Such people only find other people’s faults, criticize the others, but they would never blame themselves. If one usually has a revolting feeling towards the others, one has not accumulated mercy and compassion.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stated that today’s teachings are within the scope of theories, and the practicing methods are not taught yet since the audience could not accomplish the practices even if they would have heard. Rinpoche emphasize again that if one still would like to adhere to one’s own thoughts, or still insist that their practices are for attaining Buddha-hood, they shall not come to Puja anymore. As concluding remarks for today’s teachings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further made clear to the audience that they shall abandon the conception in classifying Dharma into simple or profound types. Today, the Sunday Dharma ceremony finished one hour before the usual schedule, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would like to have face-to-face advices for 43 believers. Yesterday, these believers could not have an audience with the Rinpoche, though it was supposed to, because the hard-working Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had spent the whole evening, from 16:30 till 22:30, to give advices for the other believers.

October 29, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious Chod puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the following enlightenment. The dharma to be practiced today is “Chod Dharma,” which is one of the Eight Sadhana practices. If one specifically practices this dharma in his lifetime, one will be able to break off the cycle of birth and death. This is a dharma to accumulate merits and wisdom. In Tibetan language, the word “Chod” refers to the meaning of cutting-off. But what is to cutting-off? The answer is to bring to an end of our afflictions. The sufferings we encounter in our reincarnations arise from our greediness, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and suspicions. These are our afflictions. How would we end our afflictions? It is through our wisdom. Because the right hand of Manjusri Bodhisattva’s statue holds a sword, some people think that why Manjusri Bodhisattva would use sword to fight if the Buddha Dharma is about cultivating compassion. This is an erroneous statement. The sword represents the idea that Manjusri Bodhisattva would help sentient beings to cut off their afflictions with this sharp sword of wisdom. The nature of wisdom isn’t the same as smarts, nor is it like the intelligence human beings think of. In the Buddha Dharma, there are two kinds of wisdom: the inherent and acquired wisdom. Since all sentient beings were born with the wisdom the same as that of Buddhas, that kind of wisdom is called the inherent wisdom. But the inherent wisdom has been overshadowed by the filthy afflictions such as greediness, hatred and ignorance which had been accumulated in previous lifetimes. Such obscured wisdom is very difficult to be aware of. To uncover the inherent wisdom depends on the learning of the Buddha Dharma. Why can’t you grasp the teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? It’s because you have not uncovered your inherent wisdom.

In Great Treasury of Scriptures (the Chinese Buddhist Canon), it took the Sakyamuni Buddha 12 years to continuously teach the meaning of the void of nature and wisdom. From which, it’s obvious that for human beings to comprehend the kind of wisdom taught in the Buddha Dharma isn’t easy. Before your wisdom can be disclosed, the only thing you can do is to follow an authentic, accomplished Vajra guru to practice the Buddha Dharma. You should follow what has been taught in the Buddha Dharma. Doing so can help you quickly uncover your inherent wisdom.

The Chod puja performed today was created by an ancient Tibetan, Machig Lapdron, who comprised the Chod dharma based on the essential hundred thousand songs of Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra (Large Sutra on the Perfection of Wisdom), Heart Sutra, and the dharma of contributing charities. Machig Lapdron was a lay practitioner who had married and gave births to children. In Tibet, she was a yogini. There are two versions of Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra, the eighty thousand songs or hundred thousand songs. The later is more comprehensive. The vows of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are to help sentient beings liberate from the cycle of birth and death. In addition to the use of wisdom, granting merits to sentient beings is another aspect to help sentient beings. The Chod dharma, therefore, was also created in light of the essence of the contributing charities described in the Buddha Dharma.

Making charities is the first practice of the six paramitas of practicing Bodhisattvas’ path, which can help you to accumulate two provisions in learning the Buddha Dharma: merits and wisdom. There are three kinds of charity in terms of goods, doctrines (Dharma) and courage (fearlessness). You can only achieve charity in terms of goods, but not the others. The meaning of contributing goods charity can refer to help people with your knowledge, capabilities, and physical strength. Some people have been living in poverty. It’s not because they’ve been learning the Buddha Dharma. It’s because you had been stinging in giving charities in past lifetimes so as to suffer from living in poverty in this lifetime. In other words, leaning Buddhism can result in the karmic fruit to mature earlier. You need to accept it with joyfulness.

Giving charities with dharma can’t be accomplished by ordinary people. It’s not reciting mantras for others. It can only be achieved through performing pujas. Giving charities with dharma requires that one, with the Buddha Dharma, can help sentient beings be liberated from the reincarnation of birth and death. Through performing the Chod dharma, a practitioner can help sentient beings terminate their afflictions and then be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Giving charities with fearlessness doesn’t mean to get rid of fear for sentient beings. Rather it means to transfer sentient begins from the sea of sufferings. In performing the Chod dharma, a practitioner can contemplate his body in terms of the favorite food of sentient beings and let them consume it. Although it is described in the dharma text to let sentient beings eat meat and drink alcohol, it is not really let them eat meat and drink alcohol. Instead, what they eat and drink is the nectar transformed from the practitioner’s body. It is to satisfy their eating desire and then they’d become peaceful to accept the help of the Buddha Dharma. Eventually, they’d leave the three evil realms.

There exist two kinds of obstructions in our learning of Buddhism. The first kind is afflictive obstructions which can be reduced by certain dharma methods. Lay practitioners tend to have more afflictions than do ordained practitioners. Nowadays, however, even ordained practitioners have a great number of afflictions. Some of them worry whether they can have their own temples and disciples or whether they can achieve enlightenment. With so many worries, how would they practice the Buddha Dharma? The second kind is obstructions to knowledge, which is a more serious kind. While learning Buddhism, as long as the thought regarding “I know,” “I understand,” or “I’ve achieved something” manifests, it means you have the obstructions to knowledge. Such thought is indicative of the fact that you have accomplished nothing. For many practitioners, after they have learned Buddhism for three to five years, they’d think they understand it all and therefore can explain Buddhism to others. Such attitudes are arrogant. The chaotic circumstances within Buddhist groups in Taiwan are resulted from such arrogant attitudes. You have to receive at least 20 years of education to graduate from colleges. How come you’d think you can accomplish anything in learning Buddhism within two or three years? Some people are simply too impatient. Learning Buddhism doesn’t just occur within several tens of years in this lifetime. For Vajrayana practitioners, it will take lifetimes after lifetimes to practice Buddhism. It will not end with this lifetime.

Tantras in Vajrayana will not be transmitted in public. In the tantric section of the Great Treasure of Scriptures, it has described that Tantras can’t be transmitted to those who without appropriate capacities. The content of the Tantra section belongs to external tantric practices. In sutras, it has been said that “dharma would not be transmitted through six ears,” meaning that a guru would transmit Tantra to a disciple one on one. It also should be transmitted in light of the capacities of a disciple. When a guru receives a disciple without capabilities, the guru can’t transmit any Tantra to the disciple. On the contrary, if a guru accepts a capable disciple but not transmitting him Tantra, the guru is breaking the Samaya precept and will result in entering into Vajra Hell after passing. The Buddha had taught that Buddhist practitioners shouldn’t lie, meaning that we shouldn’t claim the existence of those things that don’t. Vice-versa also holds true. For this reason, the Buddha wouldn’t have to teach us anything not true.

It will take more than three or five years to learn the Esoteric Buddhism. Unlike the commonly believed that after receiving empowerment, one can self-learn, it will take 10 year’s learning in the Exoteric Buddhism and then one should perform retreats. Without performing retreats, it’s a lie to claim that you had experienced thunder strikes, you woke up one day with supernatural power because you had a dream of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, or you were the divine child beside Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva so you are taken possession by spirits. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva has kept helping us and, as a matter fact, we had all been by the side of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.

Many people assert that they can perceive your past lifetimes, explaining that you once were such and such in past lifetimes. Don’t believe them. We are all reborn from past lifetimes. The thing is we don’t know what we were in the past. Don’t hold any superstition to any Rinpoche who claims he was reborn to the world. Even if a Rinpoche was reborn to this world, he must learn Buddhism from scratch. Once Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche met a Rinpoche reborn to this world, who professed that he could fly and walk on water surface. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked whether he could show people his claimed abilities, if some people require. This lesson taught that don’t mention how great your achievement was in last lifetime. The most important thing is if you have further enhanced your practices in this lifetime. Even so venerable as His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang who has been reborn to this world eight times and has been the Drikung Kyabgon, Chetsang Rinpoche still has to learn the Buddha Dharma from the beginning in this lifetime. Since the age of five, Chetsang Rinpoche was taught by various teachers about the sutrapitaka (discourse), vinayapitaka (discipline) and abhidharmapitaka (manifest knowledge). And then, Tantras were transmitted to Chetsang Rinpoche. Because of the solid foundation of the virtuous root established in past lifetimes, in this lifetime, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche learned extremely fast. As long as one is determinative to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death and follows one’s guru, exactly and authentically practicing what is taught in the Buddha Dharma, one can obtain achievement like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who is not a reincarnated Rinpoche. The variation only lies in the different virtuous root cultivated in past lifetimes. For Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the time to achieve is much shorter.

Although that when Dalai Lama was leaving Tibet, he ever consulted a practitioner who practiced the method of being possessed by deities in his whole life; However, in Buddhism, magic power is not stressed. If one pursues magic power, he could just practice other religions. For example, in Taoism, as long as you hind under the altar for 49 days, then after you come out, you are able to be possessed and tell people some things.

In Drikung Kagyu, it is very rigorous for practitioners to ascend the Dharma Throne, as before that, they need to conduct retreat practices and be recognized by their guru. Don’t regard such a high Dharma Throne on which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is sitting could be sat by everyone. If one rashly sits on it, he may then acquire sever disease and have a short life, or even worse, die immediately and fall into hells.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the present attendees: “Who is not afraid of death? Raise your hand if you are not afraid of death.” There was no one raising his hand. Every person dies. And all of you have seen your relatives or friends suffering from the disease and medical treatment before dying. However, the suffering is not unavoidable. A person can die in peace, by which is attainable. That people suffer so much are all the result of their killing karma. It is stated in the Buddhist Sutra that people fall ill is due to that their mind is ill. It is because of from past lives our greediness, hatred, ignorance (not believe in Buddhism), arrogance (being arrogant and self-pride), suspicion (not believe in the law of cause and effect), and the doubtful mind on Buddha-Dharma, our minds are ill and it leads to the diseases of our bodies. It is also proved in medicine that one with unstable emotion tends to acquire disease. Hence, in the Buddhist Sutra, Buddha Sakyamuni is called the medicine king. And this is just because Buddha-dharma can cure mental disease. If one does not have mental diseases, the effect of his body’s pains will also be reduced. The first one of the Ten Meritorious Deeds is not killing. People who still eat meat do not practice the Ten Meritorious Deeds. You have a human body today is because you ever practiced the Ten Meritorious Deeds in one of your past lives. Only when one who practices the Ten Meritorious Deeds well does he meet the standards of being a human. The Buddhist path can be perfect only if the human path is perfect.

Currently, that people who fall ill is all because of killing karma. Ordinary people are afraid of the effect while Bodhisattvas are afraid of the cause. The ordinary, due to the fearfulness of karmic effect, know to develop heart to cultivate Buddhism. They understand their future would be the result of what they have done in this life. Bodhisattvas deeply believe in the law of cause and effect. Therefore, they stop all evil causes. If you believers are asked whether or not you believe in the law of cause and effect, each of you would say yes you do, while you still eat meat every day. You are afraid of the death but you still do fatal things. Do not say that Tibetans eat meat nor regard that the esoteric doctrines allow you to eat meat. His Holiness Drikung Chetsang is a vegetarian. All of the ordained people of Jangchubling Monastery in India and many late Mahasiddhas of Drikung Kagyu adopt vegetarian diets. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also adopts vegetarian diets. Before more than eight hundred years in Tibet, Lord Jigten Sumgon, the founder of Drikung Kagyu Order, adopted vegetarian diets. In Lord Jigten Sumgon’s era, no plant could be cultivated in Tibet. Under that kind of environmental conditions, Lord Jigten Sumgon still could abstain from meat. You, who are born in Taiwan with the liberty of Buddhism, have no excuse to eat meat!

Never regard that as long as Buddha is in your mind it is ok for you to eat meat and drink alcohol. People who say this are saying that they do not have intestines and stomach. One could eat meat only if, after one ate a fish, one could spit out a live fish. No matter how people who eat meat recite Buddha’s names and mantras, it won’t take any effect. It is stated in the Buddhist Sutra: if one eats meat, one’s seed of compassion will be cut. Mercy and compassion is the root of Buddha-Dharma. One who recites Buddha’s names and mantras must have the seed of mercy and compassion so that it can take effect. Hence, however people who eat meat recite, it won’t take any effect. If recitation could just bring out effects, one would have been able to change his karma without conducting retreat practice. If this were true, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have been the first one who said he would stop Buddhist cultivation.

To adopt vegetarian diet is just a habit. It is similar to that when you don’t eat something, you would insist not to eat even though you are asked by others. You can just act in the same way when you are asked to eat meat. Just say that you don’t eat meat, you are a vegetarian. People who still eat meat please do not come here anymore. In Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, you would be strictly required to adopt vegetarian diets. Do not regard that you cannot be a vegetarian because you have to do business. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also has his businesses. However, once Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche makes up his mind to observe the precepts, he right away abstained from alcohol and meat. In addition to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s capacity is higher, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also makes determination. In usual you are able to decide various things. As to being a vegetarian, you just cannot make the decision. In fact, this is also depends on you. Therefore, do not say that you cannot adopt vegetarian diets. As long as you make up your mind, you can do it.

All possessions you own in this life are the merits planted from your accumulated past lives. When a person is at the age of over 50, his merits would have been almost consumed, and it could be seen by that your career start to decline or you start to have some issues on your health. Nowadays, the average age is around 70. From the age of 50 to 70, you have 20-year remaining merits. The reason why currently there are many young people die early is that they think that they should take the advantage of being young, they should enjoy and play for years. They think they could go out to work after the age of 30. Before 30-year old, they can just count on their parents. By which is to run out of their merits. After their merits are consumed, they would pass away.

Some people may say it doesn’t matter as they think they still have time, because they are told by a fortune teller that they may not die until at the age of 80. However, this kind of prediction usually does not come true accurately. You should lower its accuracy by 20% off, as you eat meat and do evil, by which your inherent merits and longevity are consumed. Some people may say that they have not done much evil. But just try to think about if you never have a bite of meat in this life? Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha has ever said that every single thought an ordinary being generates is karma as well as a crime. It is depicted in the Buddhist Sutra that if sentient beings’ virtuous and evil karma are solid, there would not be enough space even with all the emptiness to put them in. Countless karma is not only generated in this life but also has been created from past lives. Many people come to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, declaring that as they do not do bad things in this life, they shouldn’t get foul diseases. However, they never think of those karmas brought from their past lives. Not only in this life are we born as a human being in this life. Not merely this life we have ever had. Actually, we have experienced many times of births and deaths in several lives in this reincarnation of ocean. And those karmas of past lives are brought to this life accordingly. If we don’t take the past into consideration but only count the karma of eating meat, it would also be much. In the Buddhist Sutra it is stated that if you take half a catty from him, you will have to pay him back eight ounces. You will repay how much you eat. How dare you still eat meat?

People can be divided into three categories: One is those who never do evil and are born as a saint; the second one is those who make mistakes but they can sincerely make repentance. To repent is to completely admit, be responsible for, and accept all the karmic fruits resulted from what one has done; moreover, he will never make it again. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is just this sort of people. The third one is those who continuously do evil. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was at the age of 46, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche acquired skin cancer. Rather than go to see doctor, pray for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, implore His Holiness Drikung Chetsang, or conduct any dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completely accepted it and made repentance. Because he himself who loved to eat seafood before, he surely then had skin cancer. Therefore he pleasantly accepted it. To regret is to never make the same mistake again. In tantric dharma, one ought to never commit it life after lives, which is unlike the way of Exoteric Buddhism practitioners make their vows is that their vows will continue as long as they are alive. Perhaps the dharma protectors let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche live until now for the sake of that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still can benefit sentient beings.

Recently, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw a TV program saying that scientists have examined ancient Egyptian 1000 mummies and found only 2 of them had died of cancer. Relatively speaking, cancer rates in Taiwan are really high. Ever since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began helping others in 1997, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has helped innumerable sentient beings and seen teenagers and young children die of cancer. Even Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself developed cancer before. What’s more, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw children at a very early age die young. Why would such things happen? It is because the parents’ heavy karma of killing would summon children with similar karma to their family, making them suffer. Besides, if you have a lot of hateful thoughts and constantly argue with people, you will easily get cancer. Do not have conflicts or try to fight against one another. When you generate your hateful thoughts, your cancer cells take effect sooner as well.

Most modern people suffer from medical treatments at the intensive care unit before they die. Previously, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche explained the suffering of having three tubes, i.e. breathing, feeding, and urine tubes inserted into a patient’s body. Nevertheless, many children of the patients want their parents to undergo such treatments and think that they do this out of filial piety. You may well give it a try. If you have to stay in bed for 1 day with 3 tubes inserted into your body, you won’t be able to stand it. Therefore, if you cannot take it, how can you claim yourselves filial pious when you have your parents undergo such treatments? Do not eat meat any longer. These sufferings are karmic retribution of one’s eating meat. When you have a bite, you need to repay the bite. If you eat meat, you are getting yourself in trouble.

According to the Buddhist sutras, the Buddhist learners are those who truly show filial pious. Why? When you are able to learn the Buddhist teachings, you can exert an influence upon your parents and enable them to begin learning Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother used to eat fish and meat. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never tried to change his mother, but she refrained from eating fish and meat one day. Moreover, she told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she began to sit in meditation and recite the name of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never taught or asked his mother to do so. Some people say that their parents have got heavy karma. In fact, children making such remarks are those with heavy karma themselves. No matter what your parents have done, you should express your gratitude to them as they gave birth to you.

In the Buddhist sutras, it is said that children can learn Buddhism on behalf of their parents. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s late father practiced Taoism during his lifetime and was able to let his soul leave his body to run some errands. Nonetheless, he still failed to control his own life and death and eventually died of cardiac failure. Logically speaking, one who dies of cardiac failure will fall into the three lower realms. However, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s father had conducted lots of virtuous deeds, he was not reincarnated at once. Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to learn Buddhism and express his repentance by doing prostrations to the Buddhas for 3 hours each day. Six months thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then saw clearly his father standing next to Lu Dongbin. You are all very lazy and wouldn’t do such things for your parents. All you do is let the hospital, the Buddhas, and the Bodhisattvas take care of them and want your parents live longer. Such conduct is not true filial piety at all. Those who are truly filial pious are children who learn Buddhism and give their merits to their parents.

The Chod puja to be performed today is becoming less prominent as fewer and fewer practitioners are learning the practice. Apart from the fact that this is an especially difficult practice, the Dharma instrument of the practice, a tibia bone of a person, is difficult to obtain, too. Not all the tibia bones are usable, and rules may apply. Only those meeting the criteria stated in the Dharma text may work. As this is part of the tantra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not explain. Some people often criticize the use of human bones in Tantric Buddhism and consider it a worshiping ritual for the ghosts. In fact, it has nothing to do with that. Bones used in Tantric Buddhism remind us of the impermanence of life. Once we lose our bodies, what we have is nothing but a pile of bones.

The distinct difference between the Buddhist practice and that of other religions is the teaching of Impermanence. “Life’s impermanence” does not refer to a single lifetimes but the whole world. Everything in the world never stops changing. Everything is impermanent and changeable. Anyone having learned about physics knows that all the matters are composed of atoms and molecules, which constantly decompose and transform. Rinchen Dorje Rinpoche took his Dharma throne as an example. Why would the Dharma throne decay and vanish in 100 years as it looks perfectly normal now? The reason behind this lies in that its molecules constantly change. Therefore, nothing is permanent. Everything in the world is impermanent. Likewise, though we have a body, feelings, and desires, we will leave nothing but a set of skeletons when we die. The fact that we showed up in this world is impermanent, too. Everything we own in this life is impermanent, including our wealth, family, and health. If one is able to attain certain level of realization about impermanence, he will regard ill and fluttery words from others as mere manifestation of impermanence. Then, he will not suffer from his attachment. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has transferred many deceased and many of them died young. Death and impermanence are with us all the time. Eventually, you will have to face your own death alone. Today’s news report said that a girl passed away at an age of 16.

As everything in the world is impermanent, do not have attachment. Nowadays, plastic surgeries rule because people want to look beautiful. Cosmetics and skin care products can make people look better. There is nothing wrong with them, as your purchases will drive the economy. If you don’t shop, many people will lose their jobs and starve. It is fine to make yourself beautiful, but you should not attach to your physical body. If you can adopt a vegetarian diet, you will become more beautiful. When your heart becomes virtuous, you will look beautiful without wearing any cosmetics. If you are unable to understand impermanence, you will attach to your life. There is a kind of ghost that lingers around his or her corpse. Why are there many ghosts at a cemetery? It is because they still stay with their own bodies even after their death. Therefore, Buddhism advocates cremation so as to help the sentient beings refrain being attached to their physical bodies and accept the Buddhist teachings. Furthermore, when the practitioner blows the Dharma instrument made from a tibia bone in the practice of Chod, sentient beings in the intermediate state would be called upon, thinking that their counterparts are inviting them, and thereby come to receive help. According to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, people do not like the sharp metal sound once they pass away. Once, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche felt the deceased’s agitation during the practice of Phowa and heard metal knocking around the deceased’s body. A disciple was bid to call the deceased’s family and then knew that they had hired a Taoist priest to play metal music instruments next to the body. As a deceased person is very sensitive in the intermediate state, such conduct is harmful to the deceased. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not criticizing the Taoist priest. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had seen his father, who achieved a very high level in Taoist practice, fail to deal with his own matter of life and death.

Learning Buddhism is something that only a man of character can achieve. A man of character, according to ancient standards, is a courageous person. All of you are coward. Nonetheless, even if you are unable to achieve this, at least you should be obedient. Just as the Lotus Sutra says, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would induce the sentient beings to leave their reincarnation which is like a house on fire. However, the sentient beings would return to the forest of poisonous snakes and beasts anytime when the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are not looking. This is what you do. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has helped you with his life, you still repeat your evil conduct and then return to make your imploration to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Then, even ten Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoches would not be able to satisfy you. Bodhisattva Samantabhadra once expounded that one should have an urge in his Buddhist study as if he is trying to put out the flames in his hair. Immediate action should be taken and there is no time to waste. In fact, it takes your determination to carry any tasks. It doesn’t mean that you should be superstitious. As the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas achieved their attainments in human forms, it shows that you are able to achieve it, too.

Do not make excuses for yourself and think that you have to do certain things first before you can practice Buddha dharma. Whether you can make money or not is attained from your own virtues accumulated from past generations of lives and has nothing to do with Buddha dharma. Why can you make money after practicing Buddhism? This is the virtue you do have originally; because you have practiced Buddhism and stopped doing evil deeds, it comes back to your hands naturally. Therefore, that is why Buddha dharma taught us to stop doing all evils and to do virtuous deeds. However, although a person’s lifespan can be extended by doing virtuous deeds, that state can only be achieved by those who have done a lot of good deeds and planted a great number of virtues. Do not think you are a person of great kindness just by donating a few thousand dollars to some foundations or donating some money to Buddhist organizations every month. How can it be so simple? When you donate ten dollars to these foundations, because of their personnel costs, there are often only four or five dollars actually spent on charitable purposes. If you are lazy, you should imitate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to donate a few million dollars to the government. Because government employees are paid, they have to explain clearly the usage of every penny for the charitable contributions at any time and do not dare to misuse the money. If you cannot do this, then at least you have to deliver the donations in person to those who are in need.

No matter you come for what reason, when attending the puja, you should have a respectful, repentant, and compassionate mind. You have to have a reverent mind because the dharma conductor, the guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, comes to help you on behalf of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If you attend the puja with a reverent and sincere mind, such mind represents your offerings and your offerings will bring you virtues. Only when those who you want to help have virtues, can they receive Buddha dharma’s help. You have to have a repentant mind, because you want to repent on behalf of these sentient beings who need to be liberated. In addition, you have to have a compassionate mind as well. Though you can attend the puja today, there are still infinite numbers of sentient beings who cannot attend the puja. You should not limit your mind to those who you want to help; you should wish that through this Chod puja, all suffering sentient beings can obtain benefits.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the auspicious Chod dharma of Drikung Kagyu order and led all attendees to recite the Six-syllable Mani mantra. After the perfect conduction of the ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then enlightened the attendees. There were a total of 1200 people who attended this puja today. During the puja, everyone recited 1000 times of Six-syllable Mani mantra. Together, this was equivalent to 1.2 million times. This amount cannot be done by you alone in this lifetime. Although you had recited the mantra daily, the effect was different. Sitting here and not talking for a few hours, you were in retreat as well. Just like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenments before conducting the ritual, if you could use a respectful, repentant, and compassionate mind to attend the puja, you could help many sentient beings who did not have causes, conditions, and virtues to attend the puja. If you used this kind of compassionate mind to recite on behalf of all sentient beings, you then made offerings to all attendees with the mantra recited. Adding these together, great merits were generated and were shared by everyone.

Do not limit yourself to your own little suffering and thought that your suffering was the bitterest. You should open and enlarge your mind. There are eight sufferings in the world. The sufferings faced by each person are about the same, just with different names or with different appearances, with a kind of sufferings a little less, another kind of sufferings a little more. No one can escape from these eight sufferings, especially, the suffering of not getting what one wants. Some people feel that their husband or wife is not good. You should believe deeply that this is also your causes and effects, and causes and conditions. Do not imitate from TV to reprove your husband’s lover as a fox spirit. Those who speak such words will fall into hell. A fox spirit has supernatural power and will come to hurt you.

Some people think when a person dies, if there are many people who recite Buddha’s name at the person’s side, the person can be reborn in the Pure Land. It is not that simple. Also, do not think if you have recited Buddha’s name for others, when you die, there will be someone to recite Buddha’s name at your side. For a person who recites Buddha’s name professionally, if he is not a vegetarian and still eats meat, his recitation will certainly have no effect. A true death bed chanting refers to the following situation. A person has vowed to be reborn in the Pure Land during his life. In his last moment, those Buddhist brothers who have practiced Buddhism together with him chant Buddha’s name at his side such that his frightened mind can be eliminated and his mind of being reborn in the Pure Land can be further strengthened. If you can be reborn in the Pure Land just by someone chanting Buddha’s name at your side, then the conditions of “virtuous men or virtuous women” described in the Sutra of Amitabha Buddha will not exist then. The Sutra of Amitabha Buddha has stated that those who can be reborn in the Pure Land have to be virtuous men or virtuous women who have sufficient virtues, merits, causes, and conditions. The virtue stated here refers to those who, when they were still alive, have practiced the Ten Good deeds, learned compassion, practiced compassion and bodhicitta, and vowed to be reborn in the Pure Land. In addition, they have to have quite enough virtues, causes and conditions to be able to go there. For those who has not practiced the Ten Good deeds and attained pure virtues, it is not possible for them to be reborn in the Pure Land just by others chanting Buddha’s name at their side.

Reciting the prayer of vowing to be reborn in the Pure Land before the end of each puja is very important. This is to let you vow to be reborn in the Pure Land. Buddha Sakyamuni knew that you could not attain Buddhahood in just one life, so he introduced Amitabha Buddha’s Pure Land, so that you could vow to go to the Pure Land; and you can then come back to liberate sentient beings until you have attained Buddhahood. That is why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked you to recite a few more times the prayer text; this is to help you to create the condition for this virtue. You should truly generate this vow, not treating the reciting of the prayer as singing; you should know clearly in you mind that this is your direction and your goal and you should do everything towards this direction. The most important verse in the prayer is to say that as long as you vow to be reborn in the Pure Land, all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will come to help you. This does not mean to let you become rich; this means that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will help you to remove the obstacles for being reborn in the Pure Land; however, to get this help, you have to practice the Ten Good deeds. You have done many evil deeds in this life. These evil karmas will prevent you from going to the Pure Land. Virtuous karmas will hinder you as well. Hence, there must be Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to help you remove these barriers, provided you have a very strong mind of vowing to be reborn in the Pure Land!

Your regular sutra reciting, doing repentant prostrations, worshiping Buddhas, and making offerings are just ways to accumulate your virtues. Only if you can practice to correct your deeds, you will have merits. If you do not have the mind of liberating from the cyclic existence, all of your merits will turn into virtues. Virtues can be exhausted and can only be used in your future lives. Only merit can change your karma.

The dharma of liberation in Tantra is different. There was such a story in history. In the era of Guru Rinpoche being in Tibet, a minister’s home had a fire and all of his family members died in the fire. This minister asked the king to help his deceased family members. So the king implored Guru Rinpoche to conduct dharmas to liberate them. Guru Rinpoche then entered a meditative state, went to Amitabha Buddha’s Pure Land, and implored the dharma from Amitaha Buddha personally. Then Amitabha Buddha transmitted the Phowa dharma to Guru Rinpoche. The Phowa dharma is also included in the Chod dharma. Although practicing Phowa dharma requires the strength of meditation, it is only a part of the requirement. The most important factor is a firm faith of wanting to be reborn in the Pure Land. This faith is not only to believe in Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, but also to believe that you can definitely achieve the things taught by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had attained the achievement of the Chod dharma, the first sentient being liberated by Rinpoche was the female nurse killed by the notorious Chen Jin-Xing. Those who died in accident have very heavy karma; however, the Chod ritual can liberate them. If using the method of Exoteric Buddhism to liberate them, you have to recite Buddha’s name 24 hours a day for a total of 49 days. And you cannot do this. When you vow to be reborn in the Pure Land, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will come to protect you from dying at the wrong time, that is, accidental death, and will let you have enough time to practice Buddha dharma to accumulate the assets, virtues, merits, causes and conditions needed for going to the Pure Land. If you want to be reborn in the Pure Land, you cannot achieve this goal without virtues, merits, causes and conditions. You can accumulate virtues, merits, causes and conditions by frequently attending great pujas. The definition of a great puja is not a puja with 10 or 100 participants. Only a puja with more than 1000 participants can be considered as a great puja.

Why did we recite the six-syllable Mani mantra not to recite the name of Buddha Amitabha in the Chod puja? It is because that there are different causes and conditions for the sentient beings in six realms. Today, there are different situation with causes and conditions for those sentient beings coming in the venue: Some of them had already learned Buddhism, Some of them didn’t. Some of them had practiced Buddhism, but some sentient beings didn’t. Furthermore, some of the sentient beings have passed away, but they did not make repentance. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva especially would like to help all sentient beings. For the vows of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is to salvage all sentient beings. It is means that Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva would help the sentient beings to liberate the sufferings sea in the cycle of birth and death by learning the Buddhism in order to transfer to the Pure Land. It is impossible to learn Buddhism and attend this puja if your previous lives or this life did not have the help from Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. That is why we recited the six-syllable Mani mantra because of the Yidam of Chod puja is Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. At least, the sentient beings that salvaged in the Chod puja will not re-birth in the three evil realms. But whether they can be able to re-birth in the Pure Land, it depends on whether ones ever vowed to re-birth in the Pure Land, whether one ever practiced the Ten Good Deeds, whether ones has been accumulated the enough merits with causes and conditions, those conditions are complicated. Why do we need to accumulate the merits when learning Buddhism? It is because that it is impossible to re-birth in the Pure Land without the merits. For example, if you would like to go to Kaohsiung from Taipei, it is unable to proceed to the destination if you have no money to buy the railway or high speed railway ticket even if you have already been in front of the Taipei railway station and waiting for a while. You need a person who has the money and he has been there before then he can take you to be there. The practitioner who has the ability to transfer the consciousness of sentient beings requires the great merits. It is because that the merits are like a person with the money who can help sentient beings to proceed to where they would like to go.

Today you rebirth as a human beings which means that there must be one of your previous life you ever practiced the Ten Good Deeds, but you did not practice it well. You can be here in this puja which means that you have learned Buddhism and attended Puja in your previous lives, but you did not learn it well, so you come here all together. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not advertise or propagate for this puja, but there still are so many attendees presented. Especially you are so busy in work, you still try a way to attend puja, you must attend this kind of puja in be your lives. During the traffic jammed time, you can be here, you would appreciate the MRT can let you to attend the puja without delay. There are crowd with people in the venue, the Chod puja is not for everyone who can attend as you wish. Some of you beseeched Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to attend Chod puja, Rinpoche would promise it immediately, some of you did not promise it. What is the reason for that ? If someone asked for himself, generally, it would not be allowed for him. If one’s purpose is for other people, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would promise their request.

Therefore you must cherish the rare causes and conditions. To cherish the good fortune and causes and conditions which do not mean that we have to stuff for all the foods when there are still foods on the table. When it caused your stomachache, you have to go to hospital to take medicine that is a foolish behavior. To cherish the good fortune, it means when you encountering the causes and conditions to learn Buddhism, you must cherish the opportunity not to give it up easily. It is very few for a person who does not cherish his life practices Chod puja in public for so many people. Especially it is not easy for a person who can enlighten the Buddhist Dharma only with slightly accented Mandarin.

Do not worship your ancestors with meat. It will get worst of the burden for your ancestors to go into the hells. If you are not able to be a vegetarian, please do not show up before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. You must listen to what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said. In the degeneration time, it is full of vexation for lay people. When you open your eye, you have to think what you have to do for today. It might be possible to have argument with someone when you driving. That is so difficult to practice it. But the harder you practice it, the more virtues you will get.

Many years ago, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang firstly came to Taiwan for transmitting the Dharma. There were dozens of people learned Dharma from the His Holiness, the Holiness taught them with the same way. However only Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can be transmitted dharma alone with His Holiness and certified to attain the level of Rinpoche. This is not only the virtue roots accumulated by his previous lives, but also because of the guru’s teaching always are followed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At the beginning of learning Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never though one day that he would became a Rinpoche with so many people to follow with him, he always follow the causes and conditions. There was one person ever told His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, he would like to be a Rinpoche. His Holiness replied to him” You really thought that it would be so easy to be a Rinpoche?” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been through the experience to tell everyone, do not think that it is a power and prestige to be a Rinpoche. When there are some people to secretly blame for you, those are not imposing at all. Being a Rinpoche, you have to discard selfhood, without yourself to thoroughly benefit sentient beings which is not the same imagine as you think.

After completing the Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche obviously could not have the enough strength to speak. It is not the reason to recite the mantras for too many times. It is due to there are too many sentient beings salvaged by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tonight. The lists of beings for liberation are thick on the Dharma Table, if one of the names was charged for NTD 1,000. It would be “rich” for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche absolutely did this thing for fame or interest. It is not Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not like being famous, it is that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is afraid of being famous. On October 3, there was one very famous politician would like to attend this great puja, but he could only stay for 30 minutes in the puja. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche finally declined to his attendance. It is because that the no matter what the social position is, or no matter how famous you are, as long as you attend this puja, you have to be as a believer of Buddhism to attend the whole processing of the puja. If he only could stay for half an hour and standing up to leave, it would distract other attendees from the puja. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would like to be famous, it would attract lots of media for gathering material if this famous politician could attend this puja. Actually there were TV stations would like to interview Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but they had been declined. It is because that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t like to consume the merits in order to be famous in the world, on contrary, he would like to reserve more merits in order to help more sentient beings.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche discards selfhood without asking any fame or interest to benefit sentient beings, if you are not willing to listen to the advice to eat meat. You should regret for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. You should not attend the puja anymore.

If you just had the mind to make repentance on behalf of your relative to attend this puja, it must be able to let the deceased to rebirth with a good guidance. For the attendees of you, if you are faced with unhappy encountering or you are having a illness or your car would be scarred with others after attending pujas, Don’t think that it is the reason to attend this puja, actually those things would originally destine to happen. Rinpoche would like to congratulate you as your heavy karmic retribution has turned to slight and your bad karmic debts are thus reduced.

In the degenerate age, the climate is changed rapidly, there are something changed rapidly as well. It is easily to be involved in the common evil karma. There is no one could believe that an accident caused the tour bus disappeared. There was one believer mentioned that he is a vegetarian to eat the vegetables cooked with meat. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche replied him if he cannot be a strict vegetarian, the Buddhism could not be a strict Buddhism. This is a kind of causes and conditions. As you beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to help you, but you are not willing to hear the advice to eat meat and doing killing karma. How can you beseech Buddhas and Bodhisattvas? There must be someone thinking why it is restrict to require attendees to be a vegetarian in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. It is because that Rinpoche is in according to the teaching of sutra. If there is no mention, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not dare to do it. If it has been mentioned in the sutra, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will ask people to follow up. Don’t make excuse for your business. You would speak a white lie to express that you could not afford to eat meat in a social engagement. Those depend on your decision as long as you make up your mind, the guru and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will help you to overcome for it.

October 30, 2010

From 4:45 PM to 10:30 PM, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 143 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

October 31, 2010

At the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious puja of Green Tara dharma, during which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the Phowa Dharma perfectly for a female disciple who had been seriously ill and peacefully died while attending the puja. After the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then received 36 believers to help them alleviate worldly sufferings and bestow enlightenment of the Buddha Dharma.

Before the puja, a female disciple shared her experience of how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped her father. She was grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for performing the Phowa Dharma perfectly and successfully for her father. She also repented that she has not changed her behaviors so that her family could have opportunities to personally meet with the great master, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Additionally, her lack of pondering upon the meaning of the impermanence of life had resulted in the fact that she was not able to make great offering on behalf of her father so that he could accumulate sufficient merits. Prior to her taking refuge, she was full of self-righteous thoughts which led her to search for information in order to convince her family the necessity for her father to undergo the tracheostomy procedure. Various stupid and ignorant thoughts had let her father experience a great deal of pains. Because she has not completely changed her behaviors, her family has been against her learning of Buddhism. Moreover, she has not shared with her family how His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the Phowa Dharma to help the deceased and the auspicious signs shown on the deceased. In her family, little faith and respect have arisen toward Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She was ashamed that nothing she could pay back for the Guru’s kindness to perform the Phowa Dharma for her father. Vowing to absolutely correct her self-righteousness and selfishness, learning to respect all sentient beings, and striving to practice the Buddha Dharma are the only efforts she can make to return the Guru’s kindness.

At 3:50 AM of October 5, 2010, her mother called, informing her to rush back to Tai-Chung. Upon arriving at home, she found that her father had passed away at 4:45. She called to the Glorious Jewel Antique Company to leave a message, imploring Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for performing the Phowa Dharma for her father and all sentient beings hurt by him. At 6 AM, a funeral company arranged dharma sisters to recite mantras for her father at home. In the mean time, she and her husband had been reciting Mani Mantras beside her father. During which, her mind was full of greediness and desires, hoping that her father could receive the Phowa Dharma from His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche so that his consciousness could be transferred. Even she knew well that her father never met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he had undergone the tracheostomy procedure, and she had not made any great offering on behalf of her father, how did his father have accumulated sufficient causes, conditions and merits to receive the Phowa Dharma?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often taught that the deceased’s physical senses would become extremely sensitive within eight hours after passing. So it’s not appropriate to move the deceased’s body. When the staff of the funeral company wanted to clean her father’s body and change his clothes, she didn’t prevent that from happening. This had caused much pain to her father. When she was waiting for phone calls from a dharma brother, instead of repentance, her mind was full of greediness. It was not until around 11 AM did she realize something was seriously wrong, as she saw the staff of the funeral company had sent a refrigerator and prepared for moving her father into it. She, then, rushed to ask the staff to postpone the moving till 2 PM. But the wound of the tracheostomy had been oozing bloody fluid. The staff insisted that the moving could no long wait until that afternoon. As she witnessed her father’s body was moved again, her sorrow and guilt welled up. Meanwhile, she deeply felt ashamed that she had not followed the teachings of the Guru. It was all her faults. She had not exactly followed and practiced the Buddha Dharma. As a result, her family still couldn’t agree with her faith and her father had suffered so much pain. Suddenly, it dawned on her that, without sufficient causes, conditions and merits, it’s impossible for her father to receive the Phowa Dharma. She also repented for her greediness. After they had recited Mani Mantras for eight hours, her father’s eyes still slightly opened. Although his teeth tightly clenched, his lips opened. Liver mortis already appeared around his mouth. It was then she realized that without His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she was nothing. She couldn’t do anything to help her late father.

In retrospection, in the end of October 2010, she knew that she was incapable to help her sick father. So she went to implore His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for regularly making full prostrations at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Merciful Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted her wish in order to help her father accumulate merits. On June 12, 2010, the day before the Dragon Boat Festival, her father’s blood sugar level sudden soared to 400 ~ 500. Edema occurred in his entire body and his consciousness became blurred. She couldn’t stand seeing her father’s pain so she went to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing. She reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche “My father has been lying in bed for two years. I implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to grant blessings onto those sentient beings hurt by my father as well as those karmic creditors. I also wished Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can help my father be liberated from the sufferings and obtain a blissful rebirth in the pure land.” At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the following enlightenment “Don’t you ask for too much? What if you couldn’t get what you wish for?” Upon hearing the enlightenment, she soon changed her wish to hoping that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could arrange the best for the father. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her instead “What would the best arrangement be?” She couldn’t respond, even she wanted to implore the Phowa Dharma for her father. She clearly knew that she had not been able to accumulate sufficient merits for her father. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wanted her to answer. After moments of hesitation, she finally said “I implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for not letting my father enter into the three evil realms.” Merciful Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately recited mantras to bestow blessing onto her father. And then Rinpoche asked whether edema had occurred in her father’s hand and foot? She didn’t tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche about the information of her father’s edema. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, however, fully grasped her father’s illness. Finally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave her a nectar pill and told her that “let nature take its course. Wait after the Dragon Boat Festival.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then compassionately accepted the offering she made on behalf of her father.

Her father had been unconscious, but after he obtained Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, he awoke right after he ate a nectar pill. His  state of illness became stable after the Dragon Boat Festival. She clearly knew that it was that compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted her father the opportunity of accumulating merits. However, at that time, her eldest sister took their mother who was at a loss to worship and ask deities everywhere. A person of a temple looked at their father’s photo and said he would live another years at least . The female disciple told what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche  enlightened to them. And her mother felt there was a big difference between what said by the person of the temple and by  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.  Her mother did not know what to do. Seeing this, the disciple suggested her eldest sister stop taking mother to go everywhere for divination. Thereafter, her eldest sister changed to take her mother to pray for the great compassion water for father to drink. A dharma brother advised her to find an opportunity to take her father go north for seeking an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for in so doing her father could, in his lifetime, have a karmic connection to  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. This could be helpful if someday her father would obtain the transference by Rinchen Dorjee  Rinpoche,  Rinchen Dorjee  Rinpoche would not take too much hardship.  However, being selfish, she only thought that father was in Taichung, relying on a respirator. Additionally, her family members did not identify themselves with her. So she could not have enough courage to communicate with her family members. Her father did not have the chance to create a karmic relationship with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. One week prior to the great puja, in a conversation with a dharma brother, she heard that the dharma brother’s father passed away in the day right after they sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and also was transferred by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s conducting Phowa ritual. It was not until that moment did the strong faith arise in her  and decide to surmount all difficulties to take her father to meet with  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after the grand puja. However, she did not think life is impermanent, and her father just passed away two days after the grand puja. During these three and a half months, it was for her to make offering on behalf of father, to accumulate merits and communicate with her family members at home, and to praise guru. However, she was too ignorant to take the chance.

In the day her father passed away, at 15:28 pm she got a phone call from a dharma brother. In that call she was informed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that: “One who passed away in the day right after the grand puja, he would be also received and led by Buddha Amitabha.” She has immense gratitude for the dharma protector, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ blessings by which her father could die after the great puja. In fact, she was very clear that her father’s merits were not sufficient, and she dared not entertain any hopes or expectations of that father could obtain the help of Phowa ritual conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Surprisingly, at 17:33 she received a phone call from the dharma brother, telling that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche already completed Phowa ritual for her father. The dharma brother asked her to touch and confirm if her father’s crown of head was warm. Hearing this, she was shocked and thankful. However, she replied that: “But father was already placed into the ice cabinet.” Thanks for the brother dharma’s reminding her of a previous similar case of that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche successfully conducted Phowa ritual for the deceased who was in an ice cabinet in use. She was even too flustered to open the ice cabinet. Being helped by her husband, she reached her left hand to touch father’s crown of head. It was really warm! She hurried to ask her family members to witness this auspiciousness. Her husband, her mother, and her third elder sister came to touch it one after another. They all said it felt warm. They looked be between believing and suspicion, feeling it unbelievable. However, it was a pity that her first elder sister, who had been most strongly opposed to her cultivation of Buddhism, was absent and did not see the auspicious scene. Also, her second elder sister was held back by her mother to touch father’s body because she was in menses.

Obtaining the help of Phowa, her father’s face and mouth’s color appeared in rosy color. He looked like as if he fell asleep. He was smiling, and even his livor mortis were all gone. There were a few red spots on father’s crown of the head. One of them was in a NT$5-coin size. Seeing those auspicious signs of the completion of Phowa ritual, her family members no more grieved. Then, the dharma brother asked her if her father killed pigs or saw other people killing pigs. Her mother answered no he didn’t. But he ever killed chickens. She placed a call to his elder brother to confirm. He also said it was not possible for him to kill pigs. But he was not sure if he ever saw other people killing hogs. However, there was a pigfarm in father’s hometown. So the possibility is very high. The dharma brother furthermore asked if there is anyone in their family died in an accident. The first probable answer coming to her mind is her fourth uncle, who died in chocks. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said no it was not him. The one should be more ancient. She sought the probable answers from her uncle again. At first, he denied there was any ancestor who accidentally died. After getting some explanations and being informed of those auspicious signs of Phowa ritual conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and asked by her to think it more. He suddenly thought of there was a grandaunt(grandfather’s younger sister) who was drowned when she was a child.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that it was just female ghost who died accidentally. And it is because the consciousness had not been transferred but haunted in their home for a long time, that their father had fallen ill for years ( from his age of 50, he started to continually acquire diseases and ailments, being hospitalized for several times and had been sick for 19 years till now.)  Besides, her father had another five brothers. Among them only her eldest uncle and youngest uncle are still alive. The others just passed away at their prime of life. As for female relatives in their family, most of them got divorced or infecund. Hearing this section of enlightenment bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, great faith arose in her mother.  Her mother had felt that their ancestors were not well. If the grandaunt were alive, she would have been at the age of over 90.  This history of more than 80 years had already been  forgotten. However, at the moment when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was transferring the consciousness of her father, he saw a giant hog, a flock of chickens and ducks, and of course this forgotten grandaunt. Again and again it showed that a family with heavy killing karma would have several diseases, short life, and incomplete relatives. We must deeply believe the fearfulness of the karmic effect. His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew her family members did not believe in Buddhism, so he lodge those proofs one by one.

This disciple was thankful to her father’s disease which was the causes and conditions for her to meet the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and have the opportunity of taking refuge under  Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to cultivate Buddhism. However, she has not acted in accord with teachings, as during the Chinese New Year she was going to Japan to attend puja, she lied to her mother that she would go to KenTing for vacation. Finally her mother found it was a lie. As a Buddhist disciple, she lied people by which she broke the precept of not telling lie. This kind of behavior also caused her family member’s distrust of her and disrespect to Guru. She felt ashamed  for guru’s teachings. Thereafter, when her father gained the grace and favor of guru who conducted Phowa ritual for her father, all her family members’ repentance and gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who conducted the precious Phowa ritual for their father, were not developed.

As her parents do not have a son, her eldest sister took the role and shouldered the responsibility. She often took parents to nice restaurants and go traveling. During the period of their father being ill abed, up to total  two years and ten months, her eldest sister also tried her best to attend to father and care mother’s emotion. In previous time, this female disciple also thought it was filial only to bring nice food and clothes to parents, or take them out for traveling. Nevertheless, it was not until she followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in learning Buddhism that she deeply realized that the best way to show filial donation for one’s parents is to cultivate Buddhism, by which can help parents accumulate merits.

While they were mourning, her eldest sister objected to every idea and suggestion she proposed, unable to understand why she insisted offering vegetarian food to Father. Her sister thought that abiding by Father’s diet pattern was actually filial pious and that she did not respect her mother and sisters. Even though her eldest sister respected her religious belief, she could not let all the funeral practices be conducted in accord with Buddhism. The disciple has deep faith in the guru. Nevertheless, She admitted that she did not practice well and thereby annoyed her family. It was truly her fault. At night, when she conducted the practice of Dharma Protector Achi, she expressed repentance to Achi for not following the teachings properly and not correcting her own conduct. That was why she would have such obstacles. In the mean time, she prayed to the Dharma Protector to protect and increase her faith in Buddhist learning. She believed everything would go well. Just as expected, during the rituals for the 7th day after Father’s death that night, a Dharma sister that recited sutra for them said to the disciple’s eldest sister, “What the family thinks for the deceased is most important. It is beneficial to your father that our youngest sister recited the Mani Mantra beside the body for 8 hours. Therefore, do not have quarrels. It would be harmful to the deceased.” Thereafter, the disciple’s eldest sister gradually changed her attitude.

While they were mourning, the disciple insisted using vegetarian sacrifices and thereby had some conflicts with her family. She felt immensely tormented. A leading staff of the funeral services company told them that meat must be used on the day of the funeral according to traditions. However, when her mother discussed the issue with an advisor of the funeral services company, she visualized Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche above her mother’s crown and looked at the Dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the book “Happiness and Suffering.” When her mother finished the discussion, she then told everyone that the advisor agreed to use vegetarian sacrifices. Her mother had decided to use meat sacrifices, but she dramatically changed her mind and wanted to use vegetarian food instead. The disciple believed that, as long as she had absolute faith in the guru, opportunities for change would eventually come. At the same time, she fully realized a statement in the book, “when they need the help from the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru, they will not need to expect anything in their mind. All they have to do is have complete faith that the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru will do everything in their interest. It would be enough.”

She repented that she had never told her family how auspicious the Phowa is. She said that a clear-cut opening would appear on the crown chakra of the deceased who received the Phowa by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after cremation. The opening would serve as an indicator for the deceased’s rebirth in the Pure Land. She told the family that they should have pictures of this auspicious sign taken, but the family disagreed. They felt that taking such pictures would be disrespectful to their father and merely agreed to take picture by themselves. Besides, they wanted to cast divinatory blocks to ask for Father’s permission for the photo-shooting. Furthermore, as the cremation was conducted at 8:30 pm. When they collect the bones the next day, the cremains had been placed in an urn already. Her family wouldn’t let her touch the bones. Therefore, with the minute they had, it could only be seen that the complete skull was beautifully pink, light green, and pure white. They were not able to recognize the auspicious round opening in such a short time. Then, before she could take the photos, the cremains of her father were sealed up. It could have been a wonderful experience. Nevertheless, as she had not shared and praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s helpful conduct for the sentient beings in ordinary times, her family did not feel grateful or reverent towards the Buddhist teachings and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She felt that she was not filial pious. She felt ashamed to face her guru, her family, and her father who created the karmic connection for her to learn Buddhism.

She concluded her speech and expressed her gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his help to her father, who had not seen Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche or attained any grand pujas. What’s more, her father was inserted with tracheostomy tube. Even though it was over 12 hours after his death and the body was placed in a electrically-charged stainless wheel freezer for 6 hours, her father’s crown chakra still felt warm. The livor mortis on his face vanished after the Phowa was performed. At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was in Japan and had just completed the grand puja for transferring consciousness attended by 20,000 people. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still performed the Phowa for her father. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche really exerts his whole life to benefit and help the sentient beings. The disciple felt immense gratitude towards Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The only thing she could do is to learn Buddhism properly, to accumulate more merits for her mother and the family, and to express her repentance. Furthermore, she vows to do her best to support the lineage and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma activities so as to repay the grace and kindness of the Buddhas, the guru, the parents, and the sentient beings.

After ascending to the Dharma throne, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed upon the attendees with auspicious Buddhist teachings: The practice to be conducted today is Green Tara, a Yidam practiced by many Buddhist monasteries in Tibetan Buddhism and rarely by Chinese Buddhism.

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara salvages the sentient beings equally. In the six realms, i.e. the Realms of Human Beings, Heavens, Asuras, Hells, Hungry Ghosts, and Animals, all the sentient beings are suffering in reincarnation. Therefore, as long as any beings in the six realms implore to Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara will help them. However, just as stated in the Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows, throughout the universe, it is most difficult to salvage the human beings on Earth. The sutra singles out the human beings on the Earth, and criticizes them with two remarks, “Stubborn and self-opinionated. Unable to change or be subdued.” Think if you are exactly like this. No matter how much and how hard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches, you still wouldn’t accept or be obedient. You still think of your guru’s words in your own way. Why would you become like this? It is because you have a very strong ego and immense attachment. You have been living in your ego-centric world and dealing things with thoughts that only benefit yourself.

For example, the female disciple that gave her account before the puja said that she lied about her trip to Japan for the puja. Instead of telling the truth, she told her mother she was in Kenting. As she had to tell a lie regarding such a virtuous deed, how can she consider herself a good person? You all think that you are a good person, but what you only think is yourself. Do not have doubt as this is a fact. If you are really a good person, you would have gone to the Pure Land.

If you dare not to praise the virtues and merits of your guru’s practice and help to the sentient beings, how can you possibly enable your family to have reverence towards the Buddhist teachings? When you sought refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told you that you should praise the virtues and merits of your guru. Why? You probably would wonder why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche needs your praise since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t pursue fame and wealth. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not need your praise. However, your virtuous root is too small and your merits are too few. In order to help you accumulate provisions for your Buddhist study as soon as possible, you are thereby taught to praise the virtues and merits of your guru. Every single thought you generate is evil. Not one of them is virtuous. On the other hand, the thoughts of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru are all virtuous. Therefore, this is why the Buddhist sutras tell you to contemplate all the times. You shall contemplate on the virtues and merits of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru. Thereby, you will be able to stop all your evil thoughts. Such a deed is rejoicing. To rejoice is to feel joyful at seeing others achieving things that can benefit the sentient beings. Rejoicing is very important and is one of the seven fold offerings. When you revere and praise the virtues and merits of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru, you are making an offering. Although you are unable to see the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, you have seen your guru helping the sentient beings. Therefore, you are taught to praise and contemplate on the virtues and merits of the guru. Even thought you fail to achieve what your guru can achieve, you can still rejoice. If you do that, you will accumulate great virtues and merits.

During the great puja on October 3rd, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche circled the venue to spray nectar for purifying all attendees, the emcee of the puja, a male disciple, wanted to praise Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s merits. But, as a result, the voice of his talk was broken and he was out of breath and could not speak a word. Why so? This was because the Dharma protector blocked him from doing this, since he usually did not have enough faith towards Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and did not praise the guru. Praising the guru’s merits in front of twenty thousand people can accumulate enormous virtues and merits of rejoicing. But because he did not usually have complete faith towards Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the Dharma protector then hindered him from attaining such merits. Therefore, your regular faith towards the guru is very important. Buddhist scripture has stated that faith is the mother of all merits. You have to believe that the guru can definitely help you and if you follow what the guru has taught you and practice them truthfully, you can definitely attain the achievement of liberating from the cyclic existence as well.

There is also a male disciple who has brain tumors and has taken refuge for many years. Now he is blind and cannot see Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru. This is caused by the evil thoughts he once had. A thought was enough to cause this. In 1997, due to doctor’s diagnosis of brain tumors, he sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He was just graduated from college at the time. Like most young people, he was full of aspirations for life. The question he asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was the common question asked by many believers with similar illnesses, “Should I have a surgery to remove the tumor?” And the answer Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave him was the usual standard answer, “You have to decide by yourself that whether you want to have a surgery or not. But regardless of your decision, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will always help you.” He decided to do the surgery; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then blessed him such that he would not die during the surgery. With his status at the time, it would be pretty good if he could live past around year 2000. You always wanted to kill all cancer cells and thought that you would be cured just by doing a surgery to remove the tumors. If surgery or chemotherapy can cure cancer, no one would die of cancer in this world.

Originally when the male disciple sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, one of his eyes had already bulged because of the press of the tumor from behind the eyeball. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then told him, in addition to the tumor diagnosed by the doctor, behind that tumor, there was still another small tumor which had not been discovered by the doctor. When his surgery had finished, the doctor then discovered that there was really another tumor behind the removed one. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already known about this without going though any examination. Under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, he recovered well and his bulging eye became normal. He looked like a handsome man again. And the cancer completely disappeared. However, he did not think that purpose of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ help was not giving him time to enjoy life, but to let him learn Buddha dharma. As a result, he thought he could regain his life and was in love. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not against you being in love. You are lay practitioners and being in love is a normal thing. However, this male disciple later had angry thoughts because his love affair had problems.

At the end of 2004, some disciples with insufficient faith generated disputes within the Buddhist center and criticized the guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche about breaking precepts. This male disciple spoke together with them. Later his brain tumor recrudesced. Buddhist scriptures have stated that when we criticize others, we will have very heavy evil karma, not to mention when we criticize a guru of Vajrayana who has given us favors and kindness. Do not be mistaken and think that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants to punish you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never punished you; Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not punish you either. The founder of Drikung Kagyu order, Jigten Sumgon had said that a guru with enough virtues and cultivations can help to cure sentient beings’ illnesses. But if a sentient being thinks, after he has been cured, that he has already attained achievement and enlightenment and does not continue to practice diligently, his illness will relapse and this time it will not be able to be cured. Do not think that his illness relapses because Buddhas and Bodhisattvas punish him. In fact, when you are determined to practice Buddhism, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will first help you to block and negotiate with your karmic creditors; your karmic creditors will know that if they let you practice and attain enlightenments they can go together with you to the Pure Land in the future. Hence, they will not interfere with you for the time being. However, if you think curing of the disease is to give you more times to live your so-called life and do not practice Buddha dharma diligently to correct your behaviors, the blessings from Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru will be broken. Actually, you should contemplate this fact: in the eyes of scientists, human beings and animals are no different. The activities in our life are eating, sleeping, mating, bearing children, and teaching children how to look for food. We sleep after being tired from playing. Aren’t these identical to the activities of animals?

When you cut off the blessings given by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru, your karmic creditors will come to visit you again. Just like this male disciple, because he had had evil thoughts, his brain cancer relapsed. Do not think problems can be resolved just by frequently worshiping Buddhas. The most important matter is your thoughts. With this disciple’s current status, others can only see how he does by himself, see whether he has reverence and faith towards the guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and whether he can let himself receive Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Phowa ritual at the time of his death.

Yesterday, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received believers in Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei, there was a female believer who came with her daughter. Her daughter was very fat and the skin of her daughter’s forehead moved back and forth like those of monkeys and baboons. This female believer told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that her daughter had gotten a strange illness since 16 years old. Her daughter will eat nonstop; even when her cheek was bulged from eating, she still ate continuously. Later, her daughter also had a mental illness. Until now, the mother was still at a loss about what to do. After seeing her daughter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that she must be engaged in a bad business in her family. After questioning her, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realized that she was engaged in a tobacco and alcohol trading business. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advised her not to do this kind of business, unexpectedly, she said that she would wait until the end of the year before she could end the business of selling tobacco and alcohol. You just do not believe in the law of cause and effect. Not to mention selling tobacco and alcohol, Buddhist scriptures have stated that a heavy drinker will fall into the hell of feces; those who advise others to drink will have mishaps; for those who persuade their guests to drink more, they will have the karmic retribution of losing their hands in 500 generations of their lives.

A drunk person who will affect his nerve as a result of being in a state of delirium, he will make mistake to say something wrong and do evil deeds. Besides after he died, he will fall into the hell realms and then rebirth as an orangutan or a baboon. What is the different between the orangutan and human beings? The scientists have approved that there is only 2% difference of DNA between Human beings and the orangutan. Do not believe the point of view by the western scientists that the Human beings is through the evolution of an orangutan. You just refer to the illustrations to believe this theory. In fact the western scientists just merely surmise it, but you fully accept the entire concept from the Western theory. If you believe that the Human beings are through the evolution of an orangutan, you can bring up an orangutan to see how can Human beings be evolved from an orangutan?

In fact, being an orangutan is the karma retribution of human beings who like to drink before their previous lives. When a person is inflicted with alcoholism, at least he has to fall into the excrement hell and stay there for more than 1,000 years after he is passed away. And then he will leave the Hells to rebirth as an orangutan. An orangutan must go through many generations and then they can become Human beings, but they will be mental deficiency as well. This female believer was engaged in the evil business which would impel this kind of child rebirth in her family. She did not know how much money she has spent since his daughter at age 16 to more than 40 years old. She is not lack of money and dare to tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she would like to go on the business till the end of this year.

All the things are from the cause and effect, you always say that you believe the causes and effects, but actually you do not believe the causes and effects. When you encounter the unfortunate things, you would say” I did not know what evil karma I had done for my previous lives”. But you never admit that you already have done the evil karma for your lifetime. All of you come here; does anyone never eat meat before? It is heavy enough for you to repay the evil karma of eating meat with killing karma. The practitioners are afraid of the cause, so they don’t try the thing with any tiny bit of evil cause. The worldly people are afraid of the effect; they will regret the happening of evil effect after doing the evil cause.

Not long ago, a male believer’s father passed away, he beseeched Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to transfer his father’ consciousness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that his father’s illness was relative with his business. Rinpoche asked this man what his job is. He replied that he is a gigolo at a night club. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche persuaded him not to be engaged in this business anymore, unexpectedly he stated he would not change it.

When Avalokiteshvara saw that the human beings are too ignorant to be salvaged completely, wept two teardrops which became a Green Tara and White Tara. Tara is a bodhisattva who does not yet attain the dharma body Buddha, but has attained the realization of dharmakāya. Tara is the incarnation of motherhood and compassion. Besides it is because of the female is much careful. But in the modern world, most of the females are lack of this attribute, even more careless than a man. This is so called the man and female is hardly distinguished now. Today to practice the Green Tara is helpful for you especially for those who would like to prosper their business, or there is someone illness at home, or there is argument for your family members. If you would like to beseech for divorce or becoming reconciled which could not be confirmed. It is because that it depends on the karma connection.

In front of Buddha, all sentient beings are equal no matter men or women. Although In Amitabha Sutra mentioned, we will vow for our next life not to be a body of female, but it is not to discriminate the woman. In the sutra mentioned, there was a girl attained the position of ten Bhumis and showed up the supernatural powers for people in front of Buddha Sakyamuni. A female bears the suffering is more than a male. Being a woman can realize this point. That is why we would like to vow not to be rebirth as a body of female anymore. Why would you become a female for this life? That is because that your previous life is full of desire. That is why you become a female with a unstable emotion. When someone could not reach to your requirement, you would get angry. The Melancholia and Manic-depressive are coming from the heavy desire. Most of Buddhist temple in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the females are more than the males. One fact is that the women would feel suffering and full of vexation. Another fact is that men would like to do their business, learning Buddhism is the business for women.

For the practitioners of the Hinayana, they would like to cut all the desires. Therefore they do not cook and wear the prayer beads. For the practitioners practicing Buddhism on the Bodhisattva path, the desires are the motive power to inspire the practitioner to practice Buddhism. For the practitioners of Vajrayana, they take advantage of the desire as a tool to benefit sentient beings in order to let them learning Buddhism. When you have the requirement, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and guru will satisfy with your wish in advance.  However Buddhas and Bodhisattvas only can be able to help you for once not for twice. It means that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas help meet an urgent need not to help for the constantly poor condition. You will get the assistance when you have urgent need, but afterward you have to earn the money by yourself in order repay the debt. You cannot always say you are poor but you are not willing to work. It is like that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saved the disciple having the brain cancer, afterward he had to practice it by himself. The sentient beings are hardly salvaged like the mention from sutra, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas used the toys to induce sentient beings from the house on fire. The sentient beings were just salvaged from the house on fire, when the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas just make a turn, they are turning round and running to the forest where is full of poisonous snake and beast again.

The Green Tara where is located in the middle of mandala today, It has been a long time since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche greeted this statue of Green Tara in Kunming city , the capital of Yunnan Province in China, to Taiwan. The statue is very dignified and as well as admired by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang when His Holiness arrived in Taiwan this year. Therefore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the dress-up ritual and eye-opening ceremony for the statue of Green Tara today and especially practiced the Green Tara Dharma to invite Green Tara to Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. The Green Tara is the leader of twenty-one Tara; it means that there are twenty Tara behind of Green Tara. Today Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the eye-opening of Green Tara ceremony and made the petition to Green Tara for attendees. Wish everyone can reduce and eliminate the obstacles of learning Buddhism. Cleaning your original nature of compassion, it can let you attain the achievement by this life. Some people said that it is not necessary to have the eye-opening ceremony for the statue of Buddha; it is enough to open the mind only. This is coming from the theory of Zen Buddhism, but it is necessary that ones have attained the level of realizing the mental nature. The benefits of practicing Green Tara Dharma are including: Cease the fighting, best of luck with your undertaking, a satisfactory family life, a good health and prolong your life-span, enrich you by making money, eliminate the karma obstacles and the possibility of disaster to be cheerful for far and near countries. As long as you have the confidence to join the puja with a respectful and dutiful mind, you are able to have the blessings from Green Tara. However the guru presided over with the same ritual, there will be different effect which depends on your minds.

The Buddhist Statues are made of copper which is empty inside. Therefore ”裝臟” is to install the sutras, mantra, grain and other valuable articles inside of the Buddhist Statues in order to avoid being possessed by spirits or ghost. After the Buddhist Statue has been completed with the ritual of “裝臟” and the eye-opening ceremony by guru, it represents the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with Sambhogakaya , Nirmanakaya-kaya and Dharmakaya. That is why some people respectfully make prostration to the Dharma Photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; they can get the blessing and assistance as well. It is effective because that the dharma photo has the virtuous roots , merits and virtues, the blessings from the lineage of all gurus. A news reported that there were some old Buddhist statues coming out of an excavation which were destroyed by some people. They destroyed the Buddhist statues in order to take away the contents of valuable article inside of them. It is very serious evil deeds which will let ones falling into the hells without respite as Avichi Hell. It is so called to bleed the blood from the Buddha that they dared to take the internal organs of Buddha. Don’t suffer the serious karma retribution just only for the sake of little interests.

And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to perform the dharma and lead attendees to recite the heart mantras of Green Tara.

In the beginning of the dharma text, it is about making offering, stating that offering all of one’s wealth. You’d dare to claim such statement. Instead, according to the text, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche prayed Green Tara to grant you health and fortune so that you would have enough provisions to learn Buddhism.

With the vow of the deity, we prayed that all afflictions and sufferings could be eliminated, physical and mental illnesses cured, longevity and wealth increased, and fulfilled wishes abided by the Buddha Dharma. Your physical illnesses were resulted from your mental illnesses. That’s why in the dharma text it stated to bless your bodies and minds. You all liked to increase longevity and wealth. To obtain all these was to fulfill your wishes so that you could practice the Buddha Dharma accordingly, rather than granting you wealth and longevity to enjoy or waste life. You should be scrutinizing the truth of how Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have helped you. All their deeds were to help sentient beings be liberated from the suffering ocean of reincarnation.

With all wealth and kind capacities, one should make offering to masters with great compassion. Every time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perfectly performed a retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would offer all the merits accumulated from performing the retreat to the guru of three kindness, Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. You don’t even know the importance of doing so.

Reverently implore Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for receiving our offerings. In dharma texts it is stated that one ought to beseech Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to compassionately receive sentient beings’ offerings with a “entreating and accepting” heart, to grant them the opportunity of accumulating merits. As Buddhas and Bodhisattvas receive sentient beings’ offering, the sentient beings’ merits are accumulated. Sometimes people make offering and they would say: “Please take it. It’s just a small token of regard.” People with that kind of mindset, taking the remainder to offer, would do it in vain.

Jigten Songon, the founder of Drikung Kagyu, has ever said that a enlightened rinpoche is able to cure diseases. This is why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to bestwo blessings and that will make many things changed. You may have heard many this kind of cases. The scalded skin recovers soon without any scar left after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gives it a puff. This is due to guru’s mercy and compassion. This is because guru gives his own merits and virtues to them. The  story enlightened just now on the disciple who has a brain tumor is also a similar case.

What a Vajra guru does, speaks, and acts is all for the sake of sentient beings’ benefit. You shouldn’t have the discriminating heart. All you have to do is just listen to your guru and act in accordance with teachings. Do not regard that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche imparts Buddhism only when he sits on the Dharma Throne so that you need to listen to it, and after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche descends the Dharma Throne he would not speak Buddhism. With this kind of improper thought, you have the discriminating heart. To Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, there is no discrimination. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche lives in accord with Buddha-Dharma 24 hours every day. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche employees Buddha-Dharma to live his life. Each and every word Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche speaks is all Buddha-Dharma, is for helping you. If you still differentiate in that way, you would only get one fifty-sixth blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, as every week, total 168 hours, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche imparts 3-hour Buddhist teachings on the Dharma Throne. You may keep some parts, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche keeps some parts. However, a few part of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s could be all of yours.

Today in the puja, while Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was performing the ritual of Green Tara, an ill female disciple passed away peacefully in the venue. Her body was moved to the front of the altar. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the Phowa ritual for her immediately. After that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her husband to confirm, by the hand, that her crown would be warm. An experienced doctor, who is also a disciple, explained that her illness had been diagnosed as glomerulonephritis. One of the symptoms of such a patient will show constant leakage of protein from the body; therefore, the patient will have severe edema. In a recent examination of her creatinine, the value had been above 28; the index of a healthy one would be below 1.5 and generally dialysis treatment would be applied for those above 2.5. The doctor said that he has never ever encountered a patient with that high creatinine value in his 30 years of experience. Nonetheless, her spirits had been quite different to the other patients. Even under that sickness condition, she still had a steady mood and could speak to the others.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that she was out of the ordinary. The first time she came to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was four years ago, while in the mean time she had been diagnosed of the disease. During the four years, she had never ever pleaded for the Rinpoche’s blessing even though she once had an edema of 30 kilogram. It was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed her to step forward and gave her blessings. Although, she contracted such disease, she had not revealed discontent and indignation toward the others, neither did her face have worried frown. Each time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took overseas trip for Puja, she had followed. Thus, she had accumulated a great deal of merits; she could attend the grand ceremony held on Oct. 3rd of this year; she also attended the recent Chod puja, held two days ago. And therefore, she passed away in today’s Green Tara ceremony when the Feast Offering was completed. She had not experienced the sufferings of death and was transmigrated to the pure land of Amitabha. As an example, she displays certain auspiciousness of Buddha Dharma. Moreover, she once said that she would like to make offerings while alive; she would not like that the offerings could only be made by someone else if she died. She and her husband are not kind of rich, nor do they have money to make great offerings. However, through her cultivation of true reverence toward Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she had accumulated merits a lot. That she passed away during the ritual of the Green Tara is a clear indication that she had accumulated great merits. We have been practicing Buddha Dharma, and we are aspired to escape from sufferings of death, like this moment, when one day we have to. Nowadays, the modern medicine has been developed to a so-called high standard. Man, however, would be applied critical treatments on the verge of the death. Some people would be applied intubation to nose, mouth and urethra; it would be painful. People used to make efforts in worldly affairs, but what it turns out at the end of this life? Everyone will die. Even though you would have learned as much knowledge as no one could have, the knowledge cannot have any help upon your death. The only method is to learn Buddhism. You could only escape from sufferings of cyclic reincarnations through the practices of Buddha Dharma. This deceased disciple had achieved certain practices that many ordained ones have not. Moreover, she showed true belief and confidence toward her guru. That’s the reason why today she obtained such wonderful fruition.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to conduct rituals of Green Tara and led the attendees in the recitation of the dedication prayer. As one statement goes, “Tara, understand my sufferings and grand me blessings so as to alleviate me from sorrows and fears,” it is a saying that cannot be found in any other dedication prayer. Only the dedication prayer of Tara has it. “May I accomplish the attainment of Tara with the virtues. May all the sentient beings be placed in your Buddhist land.” In other centers, you are taught to recite the dedication prayer for specific people, making them better off by giving them the virtues and merits. However, Vajrayana dedication tells you to give the virtues and merits to all the suffering sentient beings instead of certain people so that all will have an opportunity to receive help from the Buddhist teachings and to go to the Pure Land. This is the correct way to dedicate.

You have got great merits, for you are able to witness how the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas salvage people. You have just seen that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could create an opening in the skull of the deceased in a matter of minutes with the Phowa and transfer her consciousness to the Pure Land. According to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the Buddhist teachings truly exist. The disciple’s passing served as evidence that the Buddhist teachings can be proved, especially the Phowa. After the practice, one can see, hear, and feel the true Buddhist teachings. It took place during the practice of Green Tara. This is the disciple’s karmic connection, too. She passed away peacefully during the Tsok offering after the guru conduct the offering rituals to the Green Tara, showing that even a severely-ill disciple can die in peace as long as he or she has absolute faith in the guru. You should not ask for attaining Enlightenment in your Buddhist study. Buddhist learning is all about being able to pass away without having any fears. The disciple was able to have Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche perform the Phowa immediately after she drew her last breath. Her consciousness was transferred to the Pure Land of Buddha Amitabha at one. All these incidents actually require a great number of merits.

Although there were only a short period of 10 minutes and a few sounds, the soul of a deceased person can be sent to the Pure Land immediately. This is the greatness of Tantra. As the saying goes, 10 minutes on the stage requires 10 years of hard work. In Tibet, conducting this ritual takes at least one hour and requires many conditions. However, the current commercial society emphasized on fast speed, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche condensed the conduction of the ritual and made it faster in both speed and time. The result is the same. This is related to the ritual conductor’s strength of compassion, ability of meditation, and merits of cultivations. Today’s puja is very auspicious. It is also your virtues that you can personally see and hear the process of the conduction of the Phowa ritual. After going home, do not think you can do what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did. Do not imitate the sounds generated by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during the Phowa ritual. If your guru has not orally transmitted you Tantra, it will have no effect even if you have heard it and try to do it. Doing this will let you get ill, or even die. You cannot be negligent about this.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not an ordinary person. There is a practitioner who has attained achievements on Tantra in front of you; you should not fail to recognize a great person; you should not look down on this practitioner; you should not have any doubt. It would not do you any good for having a shred of doubt. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is qualified to say so. Chinese martial art has the ability to hit a cow without touching it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the expert of punching a hole without touching. Without touching the remains of a deceased person, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can still punch a hole in the crown of the head. Today, the remains were in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; it can be considered as the nearest distance. But, even if the remains were 2000 kilometers away from here, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could still use the Phowa ritual to punch a hole without touching the remains. A doctor disciple also said that all doctors have dissected the remains and it is clear that a skull does not have such a smooth hole. Previously he had always thought that many stories stated in the Buddhist scriptures were impossible. However, as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciple, after personally witnessing such incredible auspicious signs, he then realized that what the Buddha had said are true and can be actually achieved.

It is not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very strict for disciples, it is that Rinpoche cannot bear to see you on the path reincarnation gradually, he is reluctant to give up to advise and reiterate for the sake of the disciples are free of suffering. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche try all of his strength to help sentient beings accomplished the responsibility of a Bodhisattva, he will you can accept the teaching of Buddhism to correct yourself.

Today’s scene is impossible to be seen for other centers or Buddhist temples. Furthermore, it is not allowed to move the deceased into the Grand Hall, at most they just merely put a tablet with the name of the deceased who was a great contributor to be located in the side hall and recite the sutra for it. It is rare to see the consciousness  of a deceased can be transferred in front of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. There is no such taboo for Vajrayana. Ordinary you would cover one’s face and striding to leave, but it is believed that today you don’t have any fear at all. Those are the great compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to have the different atmosphere here. Although you have no the ability to help sentient beings with Phowa Dharma, but you need to rejoice what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has done. It is because that rejoicing in virtue which is the most greatest of the virtues can help you accumulate a great merits. It will let you have the opportunity to gain the help by the same Dharma in future.

After the puja is over, although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just practiced the Green Tara and Phowa Dharma to transfer the consciousness of a disciple, still proceed to meet the believers. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 36 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world, it is  very impressed for the great compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thoroughgoing discarded selfhood without himself and never give up to benefit sentient beings.
