Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

June 3, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche especially went to Malaysia to invite his Root Guru – His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to Taiwan. Among the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, 600 of them gathered in the airport for the grand reception.

That His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche made this special trip to Taiwan was to preside over the “Grand 793rd Anniversary Memorial Puja of Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgon”, and therefore Taiwan was scheduled as the second stop of His Holiness’ world tour 2010. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche particularly went to Malaysia so as to personally receive and squire His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to Taiwan. Not only so, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had made detailed and comprehensive plans for the reception to His Holiness in advance, to assure the security and comfortability of His Holiness’ Dharma trip from the very first step in Taiwan’s airport, showing his genuine gratitude and reverence towards his Root Guru.

On the grand reception at airport, the 600 disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center was the most eye-catching receiving group. Although it was a large number of people, they were well-regulated and lined in order to reverently wait for His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and his root disciple Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s arrival. At 7pm when His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche entered the arrival lobby of the airport, the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center received His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche with greeting in one voice, waving the flags of Drikung Kagyu Order and Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. On the spot there were still Abbots and lamas from the other centers of Drikung Kagyu in Taiwan, and a few Rinpoches and lamas who had arrived Taiwan for the grand puja warmly receive His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. They joyfully greeted and shook hands with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

At the airport there were several important print media (The China Times, The Liberty Times, United Daily News, Apple News) and television media (China Television, Taiwan Television, TVBS, Sanlih Entertainment Television, Next Television) to catch the previous scene of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s arrival at Taiwan, and to have a brief interview with His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche in front of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center group. In that evening, the every main media reported the news by the title of one of the Main Four Tibetan Buddhism’s throne holders – His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche – arriving Taiwan to preside over the praying puja and to propagate Buddhism. The media also delivered the news about the grand puja with 14,000 attendees on 6th June.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally companied His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to get into the car decorated with five-color scarves and left the airport being escorted by cars.

June 4, 2010

On June 4th, 2010, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche held a press conference at the Landis Taipei Hotel in the presence of reporters from major press and TV media in Taiwan. At 2 pm, many reporters and disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center of Drikung Kagyu Lineage waited reverently at the banquet hall for His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. At 2:15 pm, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, leading Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Lhasang Rinpoche, Khenpos, and lamas arrived at the venue.

At the start of the press conference, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche took the center address seat and let the media take his photos. Then, eight girls bearing offerings in Tibetan costumes from Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center sang a song and made the offering of fruit to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, who also compassionately accepted scarves offered by the eight girls.

Thereafter, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche said to the media that His Holiness Chetsang himself was the first person to bring the Drikung Kagyu teachings to Taiwan. It was around 1987 or 1986 when His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche paid his first visit to Taiwan at the request of a tantric institute and several Buddhist groups. Mr. Tian Bishuang was still living at that time.

This particular trip to Taiwan is to pray for the prosperity of this land and to host a grand ceremony. In the past years, continual floods, draughts, and earthquakes had taken place in Taiwan. A partial reason for such a result lies in that the environment has been ruined with all the construction work. From a religious perspective, many invisible deities and animals have been harmed during the construction. They thereby generated a great amount of hatred and wanted to take revenge. Hence, it is necessary to hold a puja to alleviate their suffering and to bring prosperity to Taiwan as well as peace to the world.

Having his photo taken by the media at the media photo area, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche returned to the address seat with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Lhasang Rinpoche sitting at his sides. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche took questions from the press media and delivered the following address:

There is not any plan for visiting other religious groups or any politicians on this trip, but a visit to the National Palace Museum would be preferred. There is a set of auspicious Tibetan Buddhist Cannons in the Palace Museum and its great beauty has been well preserved. Previously, the staff of the Palace Museum told about how human labor had been employed to haul the Cannons outside for a sunbath every once in a while as there had not been any dehydrating equipment. It is said that the National Palace Museum has a plan to produce reprint limited to 200 precious copies.

As for his excellent scholarship and memory during his childhood, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche said it was his ‘ascetic practice’ that paid off. After school, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would review his lessons at home. Despite being a venerable throne holder, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would spend time reviewing his lessons until midnight and studied diligently. Besides, the press media were quite interested in His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s excellence in football, his working experience at a fast food restaurant in the United States as well as his outstanding performance, and even ways to preserve one’s health. In his answers to questions from the media, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche explained the importance of environmental protection and the practice of mercy and compassion.

During the press conference, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche answered in fluent Chinese without the help of any translators. Reporters covering the story were utterly amazed. In his speech, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche constantly revealed his benevolence for the sentient beings, and all the attendees felt his immense mercy and compassion. When His Holiness moved around, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always followed His Holiness closely to serve him at any instant. When His Holiness delivered the speech, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always sat properly and was all seriousness throughout the conference, revealing his absolute reverence deep from his heart to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche.

The press conference took an hour and was perfectly completed. Its content was covered by all the major TV media, including China Television, TVBS-N, CTI-News, as well as the next day’s newspapers.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 65 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. After finishing with meeting believers, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended to the throne and led all disciples to practice the ritual of The Uncommon Dharma Protector of Drikung Kagyu Order, praying for a perfect completion of the grand puja on June 6. Previously, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had instructed that, starting from Monday the 31st of May to Thursday June 3rd, there must be 300 disciples to practice the ritual of The Uncommon Dharma Protector every evening at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Additionally, on Friday and Saturday evening, other than those disciples who had to work or keep watching equipments at the Taipei Arena, all disciples should return to the Glorious Buddhist Center to practice the ritual of dharma protector. All the efforts were to ensure a perfect completion of The Grand 793rd Anniversary Memorial Puja of Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgön and, therefore, to benefit countless sentient beings.

June 6, 2010

On June 6, 2010, at the Taipei Arena, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang presided over The Grand 793rd Anniversary Memorial Puja of Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgön. Up to 14000 had attended the puja. There were seven Rinpoches and three Khenpoes of Drikung Kagyu Order attended this puja, including Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Tritsab Rinpoche, Bhumang Rinpoche, Senge Tenzin Rinpoche, Rasbsang Rinpoche, Yeshi Rinpoche, Palme Khyentse Rinpoche. And it was attended by 4 Khenpos, including Khenpo Namdol, Khenpo Yeshi and Khenpo Tsultrim from Drikung Kagyu and Nagwanjeema from Sakya. Additionally, 21 ordained lamas and anis from Drikung Kagyu, Karma Kagyu, Barom Kagyu, and Sakya, and 44 ordained practitioners of Exoteric Buddhism also participated in the event. Attendees were from Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippens, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Tibet, Thailand, the US, Canada, Germany, France, Holland, Australia, and Sweden.

Under the direction of the Ministry of the Interior, this grand ceremony was hosted by Drikung Kagyu Order and the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center was appointed to coordinate the event. This is the second time His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang performed a grand puja in Taiwan with more than 10000 attendees, following the puja also attended by more than 10000 people that was held on June 30 of 2002 at Taoyuan County Stadium thanks to the earnest imploration of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the abbot of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. As previous pujas that were held by the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and presided by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, admittance to the event is free of charge as are the ceremonious lamps to be used as offerings during the ceremony. Under the supervision and guidance of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the expenditure of the event was donated by members of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Culture Exchange Association. The venue was majestically constructed and decorated with highest quality. Starting from one week ago, an archway was built at the front entrance of the Taipei Arena, a huge poster was set up at the outer wall, and many large banners were hung in the hallways. The night before the event, a large dharma photo of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was erected in front of the archway. With the sight of the photo, all the participants, while entering into the venue, can sense the tradition of Drikung Kagyu Order and the blessing of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. In the arena, a gigantic thangka of Lord Jigten Sumgön was hung up in the back of the mandala and on the mandala 108 sets of eight offerings rendered the atmosphere of grandiosity. Scriptures and prayers of “Legend of the Ten Directions and Three Time” and “Prayer for Flourishing and Spreading Kagyu Teachings” were printed on banners that were alternated with dharma flags and hung around the walls between the second and third floor. With the help of Khenpo Namdol and several lamas, the Taipei Arena had been transformed into a Buddhist pure land. Disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had been instructed and blessed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to carry out all sorts of preparations and rehearsals. All these works were done in the hope that participants could earlier feel the sublime and auspicious atmosphere of the puja and then could attend the event with peaceful minds.

Outside the arena, many believers arrived earlier than 6:30 am, the official time to enter, and lined up accordingly. They eagerly waited for attending the puja and showed earnest imploration of the Buddha Dharma. As entering the venue, they were all handed a booklet about the memorial puja. The booklet includes the information about the origination of this grand puja, abbreviated history of Drikung Kagyu Order, brief biographies of two His Holinesses, all Buddhist centers of Drikung Kagyu Order in Taiwan, short descriptions of the abbots of the centers, and relevant information about the puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had personally supervised the organization of the content and the references to use in the booklet.

At 8:30 am, preceded by dharma flags, banners, umbrella and instruments, and eight young female disciples to make offerings, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang gracefully walked into the venue and up to the mandala. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was followed by Rinpoches, Khenpoes, and ordained practitioners. All 14000 attendees also reverently stood up to greet His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Upon arriving at the mandala, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang first reverently made prostrations to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, lightened dharma lamps and then ascended to the throne. Prior to be seated on the first throne on the right hand side of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, had made prostrations to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Tritsab Rinpoche sat at the first throne of the left hand side of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. All other Rinpoches, Khenpoes and lamas were also seated accordingly. Meanwhile, beneath the mandala, on behalf of all sentient beings, 1000 believers lined up to lighten 1000 dharma lamps for making offering to Buddhas. Without any fee being collected, these 1000 believers were chosen by drawing lots.

After participants recited the texts of taking refuge and making vows, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made full prostration towards His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, and then wore the Gampopa Ceremonial Hat and led Khenpo Namdol to offer mandala to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. This is the foremost ritual to make offering to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It is also a ritual to implore the Buddha Dharma. The eight young female disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, then, offered eight auspicious objects to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang.

And then His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang bestowed the teaching that he was glad to perform the grand puja at the Taipei Arena, after the one with more than 10000 participants held in 2002 at Taoyuan County Stadium. There were more than 14000 people attending this year’s puja, which was indicative of the auspicious and uncommon causes and conditions. During the eight years, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had performed retreats, practiced the Buddha Dharma, conducted research, and carried out writing projects. After finishing all these, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang has started the World Dharma Tour of 2010. The first stop was at Malaysia where several pujas were performed at the local Drikung Kagyu Centers. Taiwan was the second stop and after the tour in Asia, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang will travel to South America and the US.

For these years, natural disasters such as floods, those caused by strong winds, earthquakes, conflagrations and so on have happened one after another all over the world. It is because people have not paid attention to environmental protection issues, aroused the anger and revenge of local ghosts and deities. It is due to the flood disaster occurred two years ago that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would like to preside over this grand puja for eliminating the possibilities of disasters from this land and brining blessings to all people.

This grand ceremony is hosted by the Drikung Kagyu Order. The abbot of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, has been appointed to coordinate the event. The Drikung Kagyu Lineage, with its tradition lasting almost 830 years, is prosperous now. Its main ancient temple is Drikung Thil Monastery in Tibet. There are also more than one hundred Buddhist temples in Tibet, Qinghai and so forth places in China. Besides, there are also another more than one hundred centers all over the world, while in Taiwan, this small land where has the most Drikung centers in amount of more than twenty. A few years ago, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche went to Taiwan at the request of Mahayana Centers. At that time, there had been no Drikung center established in Taiwan. Till now, the centers have been built and if there are some that work against Dharma, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would take the responsibility of management.

Today the grand puja is held in Taiwan, and it happens to be the forth month of the lunar calendar, the month of Buddha’s birth, attaining enlightenment and nirvana. In Tibet, it is called Saga Dawa, which is a month of million times of enhancement. The virtues and merits from the puja to be held at this time are particularly great. The nirvana day of Jigten Sumgon, the founder of Drikung Kagyu Order, is also in this month. Hence, in today’s puja the Lama Chopa rituals will be conducted so as for commemorating the 793rd annual Lord Jigten Sumgon.

As for attending puja, one’s intention is most important. This grand puja is for eliminating the possibilities of local disasters and praying for world peace. If every attendee could extent their mind of self-benefiting to the mind of bringing help to this place, and furthermore benefiting all sentient beings in the world, it is Bodhicitta. Bodhicitta is developed from the heart of mercy and compassion. The wildly-known Avalokitesvara is the manifestation of Buddha Shakyamuni’s mercy and compassion.

Phagmodrupa, the Guru of Lord Jigten Sumgon, has ever bestowed the enlightenment that the merciful heart is like the mother earth where we live, while the compassionate heart is like the water that nourishes the earth. Due to both existence, the big Bodhi tree then grows and bears the three fruits. Those are attainment of dharmakāya that brings benefit to oneself, sambhogakaya that can benefit sentient beings, and nirmanakaya of Buddhahood. This is the Vajrayana practice method.

Additionally, Phagmodrupa once gave the following teaching. When you see an adorable infant smile or talk for the first time, you would feel joy grow in your heart. Such a feeling is mercy. Many mothers in the venue have got such an experience. Nevertheless, there is a difference between mercy and love, for the latter is differentiating. When practicing mercy, one has to do a 1-month retreat and cultivates mercy step by step on a weekly basis. Firstly, one has to visualize his most intimate and most important person who has given him favors in this life. Then, spread the merciful feeling to his relatives and friends, and then the other sentient beings in the world. As to compassion, it is the urge to help that one would feel when he sees his most intimate and most important person being jeopardized. During the retreat, one should practice spreading such a feeling to other people and then generate Bodhichitta.

When one wants to learn orthodox Buddhism, it is of most importance that he follows a virtuous guru to practice. Although Buddhism is thriving in this region, many practitioners do not practice according to the Buddhist teachings. Additionally, the ordained and laity shall adopt different practice means. For instance, the Six Yogas of Naropa and Taras are practice means for the ordained population. If a practitioner does not rely on a virtuous guru who acts according to the Buddhist teachings or fails to practice orthodox Buddhism, he will conduct false practice and fall into the hell.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche gave a brief introduction of today’s procedures and scheduled rituals. First of all, the meaning of “One’s own body transformed into the yidam at once” in the Dharma text was explained. The reason why we recite the Emptiness Mantra lies in that our bodies are a combination of causes and conditions as well as ordinary flesh. Such a body is in the state of Emptiness. In addition, the yidam mentioned in the text does not have to be a particular Buddha or Bodhisattva. It can be the yidam that you have practiced. You should visualize your pure and clean nature, which is the pure essence that everyone had had ever since the beginninglessness before they fell into reincarnation. One has to eliminate his ordinary thoughts, visualizes his purified body, and then makes an offering to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

In fact, before this sentence, we should add a phrase of “all pure and clean sentient beings in the Dharma realm”. All sentient beings have Buddha nature. However, because of one ignorant thought, the sentient beings fell into the cycles of reincarnations. If the sentient beings can realize their pure and clean nature that is free from the extremes of elaboration again, they will attain Buddhahood. A practitioner who has enough capacity can attain Buddhahood when he is in the Bardo state after he passes away. A practitioner who has less capacity can attain Buddhahood in a few of his future generations of lives. A practitioner who has practiced in his past generations of lives and has good capacity can attain Buddhahood in this life.

People have seen various kinds of appearances of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas such as Wrathful Deity, Peaceful Deity, Deity with thousand hands and thousand eyes, Deity of Yab-Yum, Deity of single body, and so on. They have also often heard that in Tibetan Buddhism we have held the pujas of Chakrasamvara, Vajra Bhairava (Dorje Jigje), Dorje Phurpa, and so on. Because of these, they misunderstood that the puja of a Wrathful Deity is held to eliminate witchcraft and their karma. Actually, a Wrathful Deity is mainly used to eliminate one’s hatred. Although the Deity shows a wrathful appearance, his true body is pure and clean. You should also not misunderstand the Deity of Yab-Yum. The Deity of Yam-Yum, in fact, is used to eliminate one’s desires. To practice the dharma of a Deity of Yab-Yum, a practitioner also has to hold specific precepts. If people do not understand its true meaning, they will judge by appearance and think that the appearance of Yam-Yum Deity is ordinary sexual copulation.

When a practitioner visualizes that he makes offerings to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with his own pure and clean body such that all sentient beings of six realms can obtain benefits, this is the practice of the development stage. However, always visualizing the Yidam is also an attachment for a practitioner. So a practitioner should also visualize that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas emanate lights, transform to the seed syllable and then disappear. This is the practice of the completion stage. The practice of the development stage is for attaining virtues; the practice of the completion stage is for attaining wisdoms.

Then, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang began to conduct the dharma of Lama Chopa and enlightened all participants the method of visualization, and also explained the meaning of the mantra in the dharma text. After leaving the Dharma Throne to rest for half an hour, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang ascended the Dharma Throne again to conduct the dharma. Then eight girls for making offerings ascended the mandala and sang the song of offerings to give offerings to the guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with their loud and clear voices. Their song also represented all sentient beings’ gratefulness. After that, the ritual of Ganachakra was held; all participants had the auspicious and rare cause and condition to share the offering food with the guru presiding over the puja, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Then, the ritual of lamp offering was held; His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang led all Rinpoches, Khenpos, monks and nuns on the mandala to descend the Dharma Throne and recited the prayer text in front of the grand and solemn platform of Eight Offerings, and lit the lamps as offerings to Buddha.

Later, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang practiced the Mani dedication prayer, led all attendees to recite the Six-Syllable Mani mantra, and enlightened the participants the method of visualizing Avalokiteshvara. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang also explained briefly the meanings of the Six-Syllable Mani mantra. He further reminded people that life is impermanent and many people die every day; when reciting the mantra, you should arouse mercy and compassion within you to benefit sentient beings. Avalokiteshvara’s hands are holding a Mani; this means that people’s wishes will be fulfilled. The lotus holding in Avalokiteshvara’s hands represents that although a lotus grows in the mud, it still can blossom into a pure and clean flower; this symbolizes that although we are in this world of reincarnations which is similar to mud and feces, all sentient beings have the pure and clean Buddha nature and will not be polluted even slightly. The meaning is very deep and significant.

After His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang recited the prayer, the dedication prayer, and the prayer of generating Bodhicitta, the puja was perfectly completed. When His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang descended the Dharma Throne, all participants applauded continuously to thank His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang for his toilsome dharma conduction and enlightenments which let people fill with joys of Buddha dharma. When leaving the venue, each of all attendees received a protection thread with a vajra knot blessed by His Holiness, and a badge specially made by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche with the photo of His Holiness on one side and the Drikung Kagyu syllable word HUNG on the other side.

For this grand puja, the venerable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally guided the disciples to prepare many matters and very carefully arranged all matters related to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s travel schedule, security, food and drinks, and residence. During the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche meditatively listened to the dharma with an awe-inspiring bearing like a motionless mountain. When His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang walked the path, ascended, or descended the Dharma Throne, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche attended His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang with even more energies. These all show that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is with the greatest respect and gratitude to treat the root guru and think completely that the guru’s life is more important than his own. On that day, major TV medium brands such as China Television and GTV Channel 27 have broadcast reports on this event with significant length.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 95 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

June 13, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche invited Rinpoche’s root guru, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, to have a tea gathering with Rinpoche’s disciples at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

Prior to the time for afternoon tea, two disciples publicly shared with all attendees about how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had helped their families and friends. A male disciple first shared his experience of how he and his family were helped by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. At the end of 2004, one night he was waked up by a phone call, informing him that his father was injured while exercising, he was in serious condition, and emergent procedures had been undertaken. When the disciple arrived at the hospital, he saw a machine pressed on his father’s chest and was told that the second cardiotonic shot was already injected. His elder relatives advised him to send his father home and to begin preparing for the funeral. During the first two weeks of his father’s passing, he had been crying almost daily. He felt sorrow for his father’s sudden death and worried whether his father was well in another world. He began to perform 7-day rituals at temples, and donate money in his father’s name. Nonetheless, he was still doubtful about the effectiveness of these events and activities. Whether had his father been salvaged? With an introduction of his friend, he knew that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could help salvage his father. Accompanied by a dharma brother who was unknown to him, at the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company in Yi-san Road, he went to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and implored the transference of his father’s consciousness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche inquired his father’s name and the symbolic animal of the year his father was born. Then Rinpoche told him something his father couldn’t let go with, which shocked him tremendously. It was because these things couldn’t be known by people other than family members. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also told him that his father’s consciousness wasn’t yet transferred. He immediately implored the transference of the consciousness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche promised at once and asked him to put his name on the list of participants for Chod Puja, without accepting any fee. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche informed him that he’d have a child the next year.

After attending the Chod puja, he no longer worried whether his father was well in another world. Nor did he intend to know where his father had gone. When the memory of him with his father emerged, he felt no worries or sadness any more. He is grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

After participating pujas, he brought his wife to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinpoche advised his wife on matters of her health and, without their asking, informed her that they would have a child next year. He knew that his family had been eager to welcome a newborn, but he and his wife couldn’t get pregnant after more than ten years. They had already accepted the fact of a childless life. As predicted, they found that his wife was pregnant around February or March in 2005. Prenatal examines were all normal. When they went back to thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinpoche bestowed blessings on his wife and gave her a precious nectar pill to take in. One day morning around 4 am when the time was due, his wife didn’t feel much pain as her water broke. Upon arrival at the hospital, the nurse told them that the uterus had dilated about two-finger wide. Around 9:30 am, the doctor was concerned that his wife still didn’t feel pain but her amniotic fluid was already seeping out entirely. If his wife kept feeling nothing, a surgery would be inevitable. It was not until then when his wife began to gradually feel pain. The pain continued till 10:30 am when his wife couldn’t bear with it anymore and hoped to have a shot of epidural anesthesia. The doctor diagnosed that the uterus had fully dilated and she was ready to be directly sent to the delivery room. Within a short while, the healthy baby was born. The pain of child birth lasted only less than two hours. When the disciple brought his wife and child to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinpoche bestowed a blessing to the child for a very long time. Moreover, with the imploration of the disciple and his wife, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped name the child.

When his father died, his mother was diagnosed with the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (right foot began to tremble involuntarily). An examination in a larger hospital also definitely confirmed that his mother had the illness. Additionally, the doctors also found that there was a huge bone spur between the third and fourth rooms of his mother’s cervical section, which had compressed two thirds of her nerves. They suggested a surgery and some medicine. After taking the medicines, his mother began to feel dizzy and urinary incontinence had occurred. She wanted to stop the treatment. From then on, his mother’s condition had been deteriorating. In early 2008, because of the persistent pain in the back muscles, his mother couldn’t fall into sleep. The condition of quivering hands and feet became more serious, which caused her not able to walk. She had been in such pain that she told her children she didn’t want to live anymore. He brought his mother and his elder sister to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinpoche bestowed the enlightenment that his mother’s illness was resulted from her killing at young age and instructed him to part take in pujas on behalf of his mother. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told him that his mother’s condition would gradually get better. On their way home in the car, his mother told him that she had helped his grandmother to kill chicken and ducks with her hand holding the animals. With the blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they’d be able to meet effective doctors of Chinese or Western medicine. Within half a year, the pain of his mother’s back muscles stopped and the condition of quivering hands and feet had improved. Her spirits were turning positive. Her friends and neighbors were surprised with her improvement. Even in 2009, she could begin to travel long distance abroad with his aunts.

The disciple had looked forward to gaining esteem from others. He had succeeded in his academic studies and felt proud of himself. As majoring in social work, he considered that he was good at personal relationship, especially for the relationship within family members. However, the fact was that in real life he felt a lot of pressure from work and from the life getting with his wife. He regarded his wife selfish, as she had spare money to do the investment, yet she kept asking him for more money. In his cultivation of Buddhism, he felt he had to contribute all the time, but he had no ability or sincere aspiration. Instead, he felt pressure from it although he still appeared to be reluctant to provide help. It was not until Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave him a lecture and stopped receiving his offering did the disciple deeply felt Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassion on him so as to give him the opportunity to make self-examination. He saw clearly that he just wanted to make use of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to bring him a good day. He also found that he’d never acted in accordance with the Buddhist teachings or corrected himself. He had deceived himself and others, wasting precious lifetime. He’d done nothing but merely pretended to cultivate the Buddha’s teachings, and the truth was that he was just afraid he would be away from his fond dream about future good days after he leaves Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. With this kind of mindset, in the aspect of Buddhism cultivation, rather than introspecting himself, he only desired for praise from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Dharma brothers. In his family, he only hoped that his wife would make a public praise of him. As for the difficulties his wife met, he did not really care or willing to provide any assistance. In his office, he only wished that his case work smoothly so that he could be valued by his boss. As for the difficulties in practice, he did not really care or willing to help. All the aforementioned behaviors have been advised by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not to do; however, he took no serious heed to it.

Due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings, the disciple stops trying to satisfy his own desires and also loosens the relationship. Contrarily, he furthers to see his case’s sticking point and provides the services. His pressure from work lessens as well. For these, he has immense gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his auspicious teachings and blessings that let him pause and introspect.

Another female disciple went on the stage and shared the story about the impressions her landlord got after attending the “Grand 793rd Anniversary Memorial Puja of Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgon”, personally presided over by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang at Taipei Arena on June 6th. Her landlord learns and cultivates Buddhism in another famous Buddhist center and this time he attended the grand puja with eight of his classmates. This female disciple asked her landlord for any advices on this puja. He said that as he has attended each annual grand puja held by the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, he noticed that those activities have been arranged and processed better and better. He wondered how a great puja with more than ten thousand attendees could be held in such good order and without any noise, while thinking of the pujas held by other centers he regularly attends, merely several hundred people, but it usually goes to mess even when they have meal. The disciple told her landlord that the grand puja was attained due to Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instructions and supervision, and it couldn’t be done merely by us. Then the landlord asked: Are there many big contributors of this puja? The disciple said: No. It comes from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings and disciples’ support. He said: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is extremely extraordinary. Generally speaking, this activity is organized by him, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just straightly sat beside His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Not a word did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche speak. Not a stir did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche create. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just quietly sat aside. The female disciple told the landlord that this is Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reverence towards his Guru, and all of us have not learned it. The landlord said: Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is truly reverent towards His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, and it is really not easy.

The landlord told his classmates that there is no charge for lighting lamps in the grand pujas held by the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Hearing the news, his classmates all thought it so unbelievable. And they just believed it is true after they attended puja and drew the lot in person to make a butter-lamp offering. In the center they attend, they also hold annual grand puja with around one hundred thousand attendees. However, the lamp offering ritual would depend on the amount you donate. Those who donate in a big amount would have a flower brooch as an identification so as to light the lamp. Those who do not have the flower brooch are not allowed to light the lamp. The landlord felt this kind of arrangement is not appropriate. And he said his classmates and him have never seen a temple or puja, except for the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, do not charge for the lamp offerings. The female disciple told him it is because Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever enlightened: In Buddha’s eyes, all sentient beings are equal, without discrimination of base or noble.

Not long after the disciple’s sharing, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang arrived at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, followed by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Regent His Eminence Tritsab Rinpoche. Escorted by musical instruments, eight girls presenting offerings, and a precious umbrella, His Holiness Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche stepped toward Mandala and reverently made prostrations toward it. Lightening a butter-lamp to offer Buddhas, then His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang ascended the Dharma Throne. Regent His Eminence Tritsab Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche politely gave precedence to each other, and then they respectively lighted a butter-lamp to offer Buddhas. Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the abbot of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, led Khenpo Namdol, the chairman of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, and the ordained disciples to offer mandala to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang.

Thereafter, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang descended the Dharma Throne and seated himself in the chair of the tea gathering. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Tritsab Rinpoche respectively sat by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s two sides. During the simple but sublime tea offering ritual, disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center reverently made offering with butter tea to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Tritsab Rinpoche, Khenpo and lamas.

Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave an opening address for the attendees. Since everyone had provided financial and physical support for the grand ceremony on June 6th, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang thereby came to the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center at a special invitation to have a chat with everyone. On his trip to Taiwan for presiding over the grand ceremony, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had planned to have a break in Taiwan and take the time to compile some publishing material before setting off to South and North Americas to spread the Buddhist teachings. No other Buddhist activities in Taiwan were planned. Therefore, every attendee should show his or her special appreciation for His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s presence in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also extended a special welcome towards His Eminence Tritsab Rinpoche, who is a very important Rinpoche in the Drikung Kagyu Lineage. Tritsab Rinpoche had been the Regent in the Order during his previous lifetime and is now the abbot of the Jangchubling Monastery and other important monasteries in Nepal. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that this grand ceremony was coordinated by the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center with the special permission of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Moreover, the fact that many lamas had offered ample assistance to the ceremony is especially appreciated. In particular, Khenpo Namdol had exerted immense efforts both mentally and physically to complete the translation of most of the Dharma texts. Today, all the attendees are fortunate to have His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to enjoy tea snacks and have a little chat with them. As it is a very auspicious and rare opportunity, everyone should express gratitude for the grace of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang.

At completion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s address, the attendees gave an enthusiastic applause to welcome His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Tritsab Rinpoche, Khenpos and lamas. Then, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang delivered his address. Although the news of this grand ceremony had travelled merely by verbal introductions from the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, the ceremony was attended by over 14,000 people and had not had to spend a great deal of money on advertising like other ceremonies. Such an achievement was really difficult to accomplish and several media reporters had asked about it as well as wondered how such a task could be done. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang knew that it was achieved due to the aspiration and efforts of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center.

Some lamas were amazed that the arrangements for the grand ceremony were very well-coordinated and orderly. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang observed from his Dharma throne during the time when food offerings were distributed and noticed that that the working crew was extremely organized in passing the food offerings, as if they had undergone military trainings. The crew had exerted great efforts to coordinate this ceremony and had made advance plans in utter earnest. As this month happens to be the one in which effects are multiplied by one hundred, the merits and virtues you accumulated through your efforts are extremely vast and would become the provisions for your future Buddhist studies. It is not easy to achieve anything. No matter what matter it is, major or minor, it takes a lot of mental as well as physical efforts to make it work. As a grand ceremony like that can benefit innumerable sentient beings, obstacles would definitely occur during the process. Do not think that you are doing something ordinary because such work can also be considered practice. As the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had had experiences organizing large ceremonies in the past years, various matters about this grand ceremony were thereby conducted appropriately.

The disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center knew very well that all this had been made possible by the instruction and supervision of the venerable Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The disciples gave another round of ardent applause, showing appreciation for His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s encouragement.

Several days ago, a young man from another lineage who is currently working on his thesis talked to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. As he had been to many centers of various Buddhist sects, he realized that the Drikung Kagyu Lineage is truly flourishing in Taiwan with its numerous centers around Taiwan and the capability of hosting a grand ceremony of 14,000 attendees. Therefore, he extended his congratulation to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. According to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the fact that the Drikung Kagyu Lineage can enjoy prosperity in Taiwan is closely associated with the continuous efforts of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as well as everyone’s aspiration.

The compassionate His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang bestowed a rare opportunity upon the attendees of today’s tea gathering to raise their questions and gave thorough answers to each question being asked.

First of all, a male disciple implored His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to enlighten the attendees about ways to employ the Buddhist teachings in life. In response to this extensive question, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang said that one should begin by cultivating his mercy and compassion. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang took a doctor in Ladakh as an example. With great scholarship, the doctor knew well about the various symptoms, prescriptions, and medical doctrines. However, the patients had poor performance status under his treatment and he did not have many patients. The reason lay in that he had carried out his treatments in a business-like manner. On the other hand, there was another doctor. Although the latter doctor was not as knowledgeable as the former one, he sincerely wished that his parents would recover in his practice. Therefore, he had a lot of patients and they all healed quickly with his prescribed medication.

In addition, while raising your pet, for example, you should not simply feed it. Instead, you should think that it would starve to death without food and therefore food has to be given to the pet. Such a conduct is a way to cultivate your mercy and compassion as well. When you water your plants, you should also think that they would die of dehydration without water. Watering with the merciful and compassionate heartis also a Buddhist practice.

Then, a female disciple implored His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang for advice. Due to the mistakes that disciples had made, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stepped down from the Dharma throne in anger and refused to take the offerings from the disciples. It had been a month and a half since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche last ascended the throne to bestow the Buddhist teachings. The disciples knew that they had been wrong and felt great remorse and helplessness. In this world, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only listens to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the guru of the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Richen Dorjee Rinpoche is like a father to the disciples and His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang is like a grandfather to the disciples. Therefore, she pleaded with the grandfather-like His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to tell the disciples what to do to bring their guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche back to the Dharma throne to bestow the Buddhist teachings.

At this time, all of the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center knelt and prayed to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang for commiserating and enlightening the disciples. After listening to what the female disciple said, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang replied, “If you did things wrong, it is ok for you to just repent.” The female disciple thanked His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s enlightenment and implored again on behalf of all disciples that all of the disciples know they are wrong. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang then said that if this is the case, it would be fine as long as the guru can accept the repentance. After hearing this, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mercifully asked who would like to repent. All of the disciples said that they would like to repent. When seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accepted the disciples’ repentances, all of the disciples expressed their appreciations in unison.

This female disciple implored His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang again for asking Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to accept the disciples’ offerings, as for almost two months Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not received disciples’ offering. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang compassionately agreed and immediately said to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that it should be ok to receive the disciples’ offerings. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche concurred right away. The female disciple beseeched His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang the third time for asking Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma Throne to teach Buddha Dhrama again. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang then helped the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to ask Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the question. Because of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s help, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche eventually agreed to ascend the Dharma Throne to teach Buddha Dharma again. “Thank His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang!” “Thank Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!” All of the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center felt both ashamed and appreciated, and continuously expressed their appreciations to the compassions of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the disciples to sit down, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang continued to receive questions from the attendees. A nun disciple prayed to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang to enlighten about the equal mind and the usual mind. Then His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang enlightened us that the equal mind is the “equanimity” in the “four immeasurables”. The guru of Lord Jigten Sumgon had once said that when practicing compassion, one should think about the feelings of seeing a baby; when practicing mercy, one should think about the feelings of seeing those who are in suffering; when practicing joy, one should think about the feelings of seeing relatives whom one has not seen for a long time; when practicing equanimity, one should think about the states of no likes and dislikes right before one falls asleep. As for the usual mind of Mahamudra, the text of Mahamudra has stated that the usual mind is not an artificial mind. It is not the usual mind if you want to attain the state of void of nature; it is not the usual mind if you ask to attain some level of state. Do not think about the past, the future, and the present. The usual mind is not to be achieved intentionally; it is achieved naturally from Bodhicitta. No matter what you do is major or minor, just do your best.

Then, a female disciple asked that if our guru Rinpoche and Buddhist center were being jointly excluded and slandered by other centers and rinpoches of our lineage, what should the disciples do to protect our guru, Buddhist center, and the Drikung Kagyu lineage? His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang mercifully enlightened us that the modern society is much more complex and many people have their own set of ideas; everyone is a person of reincarnations, so everyone will bring different karma with him. There is a Tibetan saying that the human saliva is poison while the hands are gold. Our mouth would say many unpleasant words, but our hands could create many things in this world. Things like these are not important and can be ignored; we should just do well on our own things. There is a Tibetan saying that one should not touch the stool. It means that you should ignore such kind of trivial things; your ability of doing important things will be affected if you have involved too many of these trivial things.

Next, a female believer prayed to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s enlightenment. Before, she had met a person who had kicked a soccer ball out of the correct path; when the ball had approached her standing position, she tried to kick the ball back with her foot; however, the ball was kicked away from the person; as a result, the person got angry with her and gave her a glare. In addition, a few days ago, for saving someone, a person had been hit by a train and died. Because of these things, she asked His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang that whether a person should not care so much of other people’s businesses? His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang compassionately enlightened her that the most important is the motivation. We should not only pay attention to the faults of others. We just need to focus on ourselves faults. When doing anything, we should have compassion and mercy as our motivation. If surrounding people need help, we should just try our best to help them and do not demand them for anything.

Another male disciple then asked a question. He mentioned that he is 26 years old. It is fair to say that most people are playful in this age. However, he has decided to abandon the playful life and to take refuge and to practice Buddha dharma. When inviting his friends to attend the grand puja on June 6 this time, his friends were very puzzled for his long-term vegetarian diet and weekly puja attendance; his friends thought that with such a young age he should enjoy the youthful pleasures. So he asked His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang that since His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had practice Buddha dharma since childhood, when His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was young, whether had His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had the same harassment and had the very lonely feeling on the path of practicing Buddha dharma?

His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang enlightened the male disciple that his choice was correct! His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang has seen many young people who currently live in sufferings and died of suicide in great numbers. Often times they committed suicide when their lovers left them. Life is impermanent. Once a young cancer patient told His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang that he could not accept the fact that he had gotten cancer in such a young age and his life only had two months left; so he felt extremely painful. This was because he did not believe in impermanence, thinking he was still young, nor he had the cause and condition to practice Buddha dharma. Hence, practicing Buddha dharma is correct for you and, in fact, let you avoid many sufferings among the young people of this world. You will never take things too hard and commit suicide. Hearing the pithy answer, every attendees applauded and praised His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s great wisdom.

Then, a female believer raised two questions. First, there are many mosquitoes and insects in the summer. Although she knew that she should not harm any life, when seeing the mosquito bites full of her legs, she could not help but kill the mosquitoes. What should she do when encountering such situation? Second, in addition to reciting Buddhist sutras and holding mantras, when practicing visualization, how can she concentrate without wild thoughts? What Buddha should she visualize? How can she reduce the barriers when practicing Buddha dharma?

His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang said that one should try to make one’s home clean and may use some non-toxic mosquito repellent to avoid killing the mosquitoes. Regarding the visualization stage during one’s practicing, one may start with short period of time, 1 minute for instance, then extend it to 5 minutes, and further try to achieve longer period of contemplation. Although there are different images of Buddha statues, any one of the statues can be used in the visualization. If one could not have a clear image of the visualization target, one may look at the picture for 5 or 10 minutes for instance to have clearer vision of the image.

Another believer raised a question that as a Buddhist beginner, is there any practice that she should take in addition to reciting sutras and mantras? His Holiness gave his instructions that repentance is the first practice to overcome one’s own karmic obstacles and then practicing the Vajrasattva will further reduce the hindrance against the practicing and also will be able to protect one’s guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that this believer had not taken refuge and not received the transmission of the Dharma. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang turned his face to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and asked if the practice ritual of Vajrasattva could be granted to disciples? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche immediately accepted the request. All the disciples felt immense gratefulness.

His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang gave more instructions that all the disciples have to become united, help each other, do good deeds as most as possible, and do cultivate qualities of mercifulness and compassion. The tea gathering proceeds. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and Tritsab Rinpoche were served with tea, fruits and cookies. The attendees also took beverage and food as well. In this moment, due to the devotion and great efforts paid by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, disciples of the Glorious Jewel Center obtained this rare opportunity of this gathering with His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and the rare chance to hear his speech. During the afternoon tea, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who sat on the left rear side of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, frequently leaned himself toward His Holiness to make additional marks and explanations of the questions raised by disciples and believers. It indicates that a true disciple, even noble as a Rinpoche, wholeheartedly attended to his Guru.

Before the tea gathering come to an end, all the attendees recited dedication prayers. Afterwards, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and Tritsab Rinpoche left the venue in the fading sound of thank you from the attendees.

June 19, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 95 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

June 20, 2010

With the continuous imploration of disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Centers and eager wishes of many sentient beings, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at last ascended the throne again and accepted disciples’ making repentances in public. In addition, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed precious teachings of Buddhism.

Prior to the beginning of the regular puja, a female disciple took the podium and shared her experience of how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped her whole family. On June 9th, Wednesday, she received her mother’s call informing her that her father had previously fell down and vomited that morning after getting up and drinking water. Because of feeling lightheaded and having a headache, he was sent to the emergency room of a hospital. In the evening, her mother called again and told her that, after examining on him, the doctor suggested a surgery to stop the bleeding in his brain. At this point, she began to feel worried but told her mother to postpone the surgery to avoid some complications. She also rushed back home in central Taiwan. Meanwhile she contacted a dharma brother in Taichung. The dharma brother at once brought nectar pills to the emergency room for her father to take in and told her father, still in clear sense, to contemplate on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. For this, she was extremely grateful.

She then quickly made a call to the head of her dharma group, informing the head about her father’s condition. The head called back soon and said: “Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said your father’s illness was Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, right?” She replied “yes!” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also said “it was your call whether to undertake a surgery. Within next two hours, you should observe whether your father were vomiting or feeling dizzy. If he did, you should listen to what the doctor said. If not, you had to decide what to do next.” The head also reminded her not to be overanxious. Otherwise, her mother would also felt very nervous, too.

As she arrived at Taichung, her father was already sent to the intensive care unit. She told her mother and brother about how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had bestowed his blessings on her father. She also told her mother how powerful Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is. Rinpoche knows everything! Rinpoche is a Buddha! As soon as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave the blessings, Rinpoche knew her father’s condition at once. She then told her mother and brother not to have their father go through the surgery because of the aftereffects. Her father had diabetes, liver diseases, and high blood pressure. It would be extremely painful if he’d go through the brain surgery because there would be many tubes inserted in his body. Later, her father decided not to undergo the surgery.

The next day, the head called to inquire her father’s condition. They felt very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s unceasing care. Other than feeling a bit dizzy and a little headache, her father had not vomited and was in a clear sense. His face looked fine and could begin to talk a little. There were more than ten patients in the intensive care unit. No one liked her father who didn’t use tracheostomy tube and could still talk. Her mother and brother were both at peace. These were the great blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. No one in her family had feared about her father’s illness.

When they were at home, the disciple shared stories of how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had helped many people. She also shared a teaching in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s book “Happiness and Suffering” about how to face death. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once said “if one’s life is not supposed to end, his illness will eventually be healed. However, if one’s life is no longer extendable but one is forced to live on, such situation will simply cause him suffering and fear. Great negative impacts will be emerged. So when we receive the help from Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru, we shouldn’t expect any results we wish for. We should completely trust Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and the guru will only do things in our favor and will help us. That’s enough.”

The next day her mother called and said that her father pleaded to return home. He wanted to smoke and have a drink. Getting out of his bed and trying to strip the IV needle had caused a chaos in the intensive care unit. So he was transferred to a regular room. On Saturday, Richen Dorjee Rinpoche received believers in suffering at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. This disciple went to express her gratefulness to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessing. After leaving the center, she called her mother. Her mother told her that her father was already asleep, no longer arguing. The situation of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage was also already subdued. She told her mother that they should be grateful to the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for all these improvements. Anyone who was diagnosed with this disease would either fall in a coma or die. Within these days, if not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help, she would be helpless and in extreme pain. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once said that no one can change others’ karmic causes and conditions. One can only alter the taste of one’s karmic fruit, but can’t make it vanish. If one is genuinely with filial piety, one should be learning Buddhism and one should learn it on behalf of his parents. Through learning and practicing Buddhism, one should cultivate his compassion and Bodhichitta. One should also lean to make repentance. In so doing, one can possibly change the taste of the karmic fruit of his parents.

On December 6th of 2007, after work, her mother all of a sudden was unable to walk and had to sit down at the sidewalk, waiting for her father to pick her up. As they went to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, all her mother’s joints were swelling and she felt so painful that she needed a wheelchair. While meeting with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinpoche immediately bestowed blessings onto her mother and granted her the opportunities to attend to the Chod pujas. The night after her mother participated in the Chod puja, her mother could sleep well and the swelling in her feet disappeared. She could also begin to walk slowly. Within a few days, her mother was discharged from the hospital and went back to Taichung. When the second time her mother attended the Chod puja, her mother could travel alone from Taichung to Taipei. These were also due to the blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

One unfortunate event would always lead to another. No sooner, her younger brother who had been always in troubles and needed her parents to solve fell down as he went to the toilet of his dormitory in the construction site. One of his hands couldn’t lift up. Nor could he have the strength to hold a cup. Her mother had to feed him meals. They once again went to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Immediately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held a stick and point to his back, with Rinpoche’s blessings, saying “this problem already began when you served in the army.” “What were you responsible for?” Rinpoche asked. His brother replied “I was responsible for taking care of those who were mentally ill.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued “Now you should know their pain. How you’d treat those patients? You didn’t have any compassion or sympathy. This is the retribution of your conducts. You’d done one evil thing that even your mother doesn’t know. Go home! Make repentance and then come back to see Rinpoche again.” Compassionately, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted her brother the opportunities to attend the Chod pujas. Gradually, the illness of her brother’s hand was healed and he could take care of himself again.

However, the event did not come to end. Since her younger brother had killed many sentient beings and liked to go fishing, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer on December 4th, 2009. Thereafter, he started to become low-spirited and gave himself up as hopeless. The thought of committing suicide usually arouse in him. He felt himself was still so young at the age of 36, and couldn’t accept that he acquired esophageal cancer. The disciple persuaded his brother from undergoing surgery, and she also took the book “Happiness and Suffering” written by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to him to read. Now her brother starts his work and also be able to have smiles when facing himself. He even could go to hospital to attend to father. The book “Happiness and Suffering” written by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche benefits countless sentient beings, and it also let those sentient beings without causes and conditions to hear Buddhism obtain help. she really appreciates it.

The disciple also made repentance that she often hurts people in speaking. She does not correct herself body, speech, and mind. From time to time, she gets angry at parents, does not shoe filial piety, which makes no causes and conditions for her family members to cultivate Buddhism. She now makes determination to diligently make repentance and cultivate Buddhist teachings so as to repay her parents for their loving care. She also expressed her gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his continuously blessings, teachings and advices. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches sentient beings by different means accordingly. She is thankful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended the Dharma Throne again after receiving the constant praying of all disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei and the expectation of beings. All disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center deeply felt ashamed. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended the Dharma Throne, they kneed down and prayed for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s forgiveness. During the tea party one week ago, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, implored by disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, instructed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma Throne, to receive disciples’ offering, and to accept disciples’ repentance. Taking His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s instruction, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended the Dharma Throne and bestowed disciples the precious opportunity of making repentance before Guru and all the attendees.

At that moment, all disciples made tall kneeling and cried aloud. They were grateful for the grace bestowed by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Many disciples went towards and before the mandala, took up microphone by turns, and spoke out their faults before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and all the present.

The president of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Culture Exchange Association first made his repentance. As a president, he has not fulfilled his responsibilities to supervise the work in the center. For instance, members in the torma group had been raising fund, which has violated the rule set by the Guru, but the president knew nothing about it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been teachings disciples to cultivate our compassion. However, the president repented that he has not applied Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings in daily life or in the business of the center. Take another example. In Saturday afternoons when believers wished to meet with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, volunteers arranged the waiting lines downstairs in the ways that the already unwell believers had to wait for a long time. The president also wished to be punished because the disciples had not sensed the sufferings of those believers who waited in line. He has taken refuge for many years and has been helped by the great grace of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He felt ashamed for his inability to free Rinpoche from worries so that Rinpoche can focus on propagating Buddhism. What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave to disciples is the best. Yet, disciples never gave the best in return. There exists no Buddha Dharma without the Guru. Not only these visible 1000 participants need the help of pujas but the countless, invisible sentient beings also need the help of Buddha Dharma taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He implored the mercy and compassion of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to benefit all sentient beings by ascending the throne and teaching the Buddha Dharma again.

After the president had spoken, a female disciple continued and expressed her repentance. She had taken refuge for the longest time, but she also had created most problems. In the past ten years,  even though Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave reminders repeatedly, she still made mistakes over and over again. She failed to practice or to act upon the teachings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cares most about the suffering of the sentient beings and wants all the sentient beings to be liberated from their suffering and become joyful. However, we never noticed the suffering of the sentient beings. In particular, she, being self-righteous and so selfish, had never applied Buddha Dharma in her life or changed her behaviors. Therefore, she wasted Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s merits and physical energy and disappointed the sentient beings. The sentient beings thereby were unable to listen to the Buddhist teachings and felt immensely agitated The accomplishments of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s practice has been increasing. The propagation of Drikung Kagyu Order’s teachings depends on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Nonetheless, instead of helping Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she was not a decent disciple. Her failure of correcting her own mistakes prevented Rinpoche from doing more important things. She had been impeded Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and sentient beings. She felt her conducts were heinous. Even so she still implored the compassion and sympathy of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Without the Guru, we have no one to depend on and do not know what to do. She prayed for another opportunity and also thanked the Guru for enlightening her with various teachings so as to let her see her mistakes. She thanked the Guru for not giving up upon us.

A female disciple repented that she was responsible for making arrangement when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received believers on Saturdays. Seeing believers could seek audience with Rinpoche for help, although in a long line, made her very happy for them. However, her arrangement had given rise to the trouble that believers in sufferings had to painstakingly wait in line from noon downstairs of the building. She knew it was a problem but did not raise it to related staff for improvement. She failed to emphasize with their endurance of being exposed to the sun, rain and wind-blowing. She had caused afflictions to so many believers. As a result, she who should protect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has actually done harm to Rinpoche. She felt she was the most evil person because she had damaged Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s compassion and Bodhisattva.

A disciple made his repentance that, as a committee member of the council, other than overseeing the regular operation of the mandala he was also assigned the job by the council to participate in the work of the torma group. He has joined the meetings of the torma group for several times but wasn’t able to pinpoint the fundraising problem. Without paying attention to the details and then promptly reporting the matter to the council, he has caused more serious errors later. This implied that he has not observed and solidly practiced the rules and teachings Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has granted to the center. He failed his responsibility to supervise the operation of the group. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has indicated that works in the center are volunteering, meaning no pay, all of you therefore have not been mindful in dealing with them. This means the disciple has not followed the teachings of Buddha Dharma, nor has he made efforts to fulfill his duty. He implored that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would give him the most sever punishment.

A disciple repented that he has not genuinely vowed a supra-mundane heart, Bodhichitta, and compassion that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has kept teaching. Over the past twenty years, he has not seen any great practitioners like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Even in history, it is rare to find any practitioner who can so keenly teach the Buddha Dharma like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He implored that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could continue to turn the Dharma wheel. It is all sentient beings’ profound loss, including us, a great practitioner with such accomplishment like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche won’t continue to teach the Buddha Dharma.

A disciple made her repentance that, as a member of the torma group, she also agreed with the fundraising. She still was completely unaware of her making mistakes before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pointed out the problem. In retrospection, she knew she had made a great many mistakes which are the root of reincarnation. From the beginning, she had been an evil person and, till now, she had become an evil disciple. She still implored that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could accept hers and everyone’s repentance and ascend the throne to teach the Buddha Dharma.

A disciple repented that he must correct his errors and should never be a flunky any more. While Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stopped teaching the Buddha Dharma and there were no audio-tapes to listen to during Sunday’s pujas, he felt as if he were a walking corpse. He implored that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would grant disciples the opportunity to once again listen to the teachings of audio-recording.

A disciple repented that when he took refuge in a non-Buddhist religion, the comfort he received was as empty as a rainbow. It’s not until his father’s death did he obtain the chance to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He realized the existence of such a great practitioner who is completely dependable. Nonetheless, he still can’t practice everything according to the teachings of the Buddha Dharma. He always thinks of himself and has been self-righteous. His family has been lack of interests in learning the Buddha Dharma. People he introduced to lean the Buddha Dharma were rarely living their life according to the teachings of Buddha Dharma. He hoped that everyone here could take his mistakes as examples and can avoid them in the future. It’s his fault that so many sentient beings have lost opportunities to listen to the Buddha Dharma and lived in horror. He profoundly repented his errors and prayed that the Guru can bestow merits to sentient beings so that they can listen to the Buddha Dharma.

One disciple repented that he had already taken refuge for long, but he has still held the mindset of praying for blessing and protection. He took attending Sunday puja every week as granted, never contemplating on how to correct himself and taking Buddhism into daily life. As being a volunteer, he considered himself to be helping others; however, actually he set him himself prior to the suffering of sentient beings. And he did not concern about beings from their standpoint. He felt so repentant in that he brought Guru such hardships and in that disciples have not achieved it although Guru kept repeatedly reminding all the disciples.

One disciple made his repentance that she, as being a medical person who is responsible for taking every attendee’ temperature every Saturday, saw many suffering believers coming very early to wait in a line for the number ticket and she felt it was hardships for them. She thought it was wrong but she did not dare to raise the issue, with a fear of being an offender. Therefore the kindness of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was misunderstood by people. This fault belonged to not only the cadre of the center but it also came from that all disciples did not keep this center and Guru in mind, took themselves as outsiders rather than fitting them into this big family, and thought that center’s affairs were some people’s responsibility. However, the maintenance of a family is everyone’s responsibility. She hoped that everyone could be brave to raise the issues they find. She was also reminded by her group leader by asking that according to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instruction, the time to seek audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche starts at 3:00 pm, why the volunteers needed to be standby at so early time? At that spot, nobody answered the group leader because they were afraid they would be blamed if they raised the issue. She was very repentant. Then she beseeched for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reception of disciples’ repentance.

A disciple first expressed her gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for granting the disciples an opportunity to show their repentance. She felt that she was not qualified to express her repentance, for her evil karma was so heavy that she even got scared thinking of it. She had let her introducer defame her venerable guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and had even lost her Dharma texts. As she was a member of the Torma team, she shared the responsibility for the mistake that had been made. Having sought refuge for over 6 years, she had considered herself obedient and repentant during the first three years of her Buddhist study. She had used to live in Yilan and later moved to Taipei because she wanted to learn Buddhism under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that one’s great gratitude showed in his well-conducted Buddhist study. Also, filial piety could be practiced most adequately in one’s Buddhist study. Due to the fact that she had not been a pious daughter, she then decided to learn Buddhism. However, she didn’t conduct it properly. She didn’t employ the Buddhist teachings in her life and didn’t feel grateful to the sentient beings, her Dharma brothers, her guru, or the Dharma protector. Last year, when Influenza Type A pandemic broke out, she had to miss three pujas. That was the time when many beings suffered and needed the pujas. She felt immense suffering. When she did full prostrations, she pounded her heart because her greed, hatred, and ignorance had increased. She wanted to attend the pujas and thereby felt really suffered. She knew that it was her own fault. She had failed to practice the teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in her life. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not give up on her. Now, more than 1000 people were unable to attend the pujas. As she had experienced such suffering, she implored the venerable Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to continue to ascend the Dharma throne to give teachings. Thereby, the sentient beings would be allowed to listen to the Buddhist teachings and form connections for learning Buddhism. As Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the sentient beings’ habitual patterns accumulated in their previous lives were difficult to change and in need of the gradual influence of the Buddhist teachings. She implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma throne to bestow teachings and to grant the karmic connections for learning Buddhism to the sentient beings. The sentient beings need Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

A disciple particularly thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Although during this period Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not ascend the Dharma Throne, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not give up the disciples and let everyone reflect deeply on his own faults during this period. We have to realize Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s intention. She repented that when handling matters she only sought greedily her own convenience without considering the needs of other sentient beings. If we implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to teach Buddha dharma just for the sake of our own sufferings, we were really not qualified to do so. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is charged with great responsibility for the Drikung Kagyu lineage. We, the disciples, should not consume Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s virtues. The disciples are part of all sentient beings; she prayed to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for not abandoning the sentient beings and continuing to teach Buddha dharma.

A young disciple repented that if it were not because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she would neither have the opportunity to live today nor be able to go to college. However, she never truly repented and had no filial piety at home, shouting against her parents. She did not spread Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s kindness and only spoke one or two sentences about it with his friends. If she discovered that there were no responses from her friends, he would give up talking about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s kindness. She repented and implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving everyone an opportunity again to listen to Buddha dharma.

A disciple confessed as following. The disciple expressed that, after her first time attending a puja presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she had a feeling as if she was just rescued from the hell realm. She said, today, however it was due to her conducts that the sentient beings had lost such opportunity to be saved. She mentioned that she once was a member of the other Buddhist center, and that center had broken into opponent groups, competing for authority. But now we have created trouble in this Buddhist center and, as a result, the beings would not be able to hear Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings here. She continued, her family and her friends had received much help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, even further, her mother felt that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is as great as the king of the heaven. But, we had neglected the virtues and merits of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to the extent that as if the Rinpoche is a low-priced worker. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been always a model and leading the way ahead of beings, but we disciples are towards the opposite direction; she can’t help to feel deep repentance.

A disciple reptented that she just acted if he had practiced, but actually she did not correct her conducts. She did daily practice just like she was forced to do homework as an elementary school student, i.e. she did not do the daily practice with his own willing. She did not accept opinions from others. She just pretended to be patient for these. She did not manage herself well. She should be brave enough to repent herself to take her own faults, not to make repentance only when she had to do it. It was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who saved her life, and salvaged her father and grandmother. Although she obtains a chance to work in Rinpoche’s enterprise group, she did not do her job attentively, and often brings troubles to colleagues instead.

A disciple repented that she has taken refuge for many years already and as a member of the council as well as the torma group, it was her fault not to be able to follow the teachings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. To create and maintain a clear and clean environment in the center, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has set the rule that disciples shouldn’t get involved in any money matters. This rule was set for the sake of disciples. In the name of convenience, the torma group, however, has been oblivious to this rule and has raised fund to buy supplies and materials. She repented that she has not reported such matter to the Guru or to the council and allowed such matter to continue for more than one year. She should be wholly responsible for this mistake.

A disciple repented that even she had the opportunity to help out in the center, she has become a flunky in the hope to keep making torma in the group, just as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has indicated in a puja. She often wished that others would be fond of her. When carrying out responsibilities, she hoped something in return without any repentance. If not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she had already vanished in the world. Without the Buddha Dharma, her life would lose its direction. She begged the Vajra Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, to accept her repentance and ascend the throne to continuously teach the Buddha Dharma.

A disciple repented that he has been a vicious disciple, without following and practicing the Buddha Dharma taught by the Guru. Either as a member of the torma group or being on duty in the exterior site, whenever there was something strange occurred, he always wanted to be a yes-man in the hope not to offend others or dharma brothers. He was completely lack of compassion and filial piety. His failure to truly correct his misconducts according to the Buddha Dharma has given rise to his mother’s negative thoughts about the Guru and the center. In addition, when working on Japanese translation for the center, he prioritized his own work and therefore the translation has always been postponed to the last minute. He simply wanted to finish the translation without regarding the center and the Order as his first concern. He made his repentance about his evil conducts, imploring that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could accept his repentance, ascend the throne and keep teaching the Buddha Dharma.

A disciple who was in charge of propaganda work made repentance: He was fortunate to have this rare opportunity to do this work, but he did not cherish it at all. He usually missed out the important part while writing the event calendar. He even wrote it wrong. Therefore, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche needed to spent many energy and time to review and amend those articles. Even when he was doing the propaganda of the grand puja, he was still muddle through his work, thinking that he just needed to do it and hand it over. However, the repeatedly errors he made needed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to remind him of them again and again. The disciple himself as well as his family members all gained much caring from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. But the disciple did not have gratitude mind at all. He did not do the work wholeheartedly. Thus he made the repentance. Besides, he also prayed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for bestowing one more chance to disciples.

One believer who had not taken refuge reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche: Although disciples had not attained perfection, they had tried their best, and she felt she was well-greeted and helped. Therefore, she prayed to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for forgiving disciples’ faults. Besides, she also made repentance in that she had ever thrown suspicion on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, which was all her own problems.

A previous leader of the torma group made repentance. The disciple said that she felt she was the evilest person. Her parents’ health was kept due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help and blessing. The consciousness of her deceased daughter as well as her grandmother were both transferred by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. And she herself life was also saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for many times. Even more, knowing that she was in poor financial situation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche arranged her to work first for Glorious Jewel Antique Company and then for Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company. However, she became the one who led the torma group to raise fund, and that event caused the councilmen and supervisors to spend many energy and time to handle this issue. She had learned how to make torma for so many years, but she still did not do it well. She repented that she was the one who have most opinions, self- righteous, and thought that she was very talent and did things well so everyone should listen to her. She felt she was unforgivable. She thought she was more evil than the previous evil disciples who did harm to the center, as she knowingly violated the rule, she became doubly guilty. and she was willing to accept any punishment. The only thing she hoped was not to make dharma brothers involved and stopped their opportunity of listening to Buddhism. Ceasing other’s life to achieve wisdom is the worst thing. Therefore, she implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma Throne and bestow Buddhist teachings for disciples and sentient beings.

A believer who had not taken refuge made repentance: She was the one who made offering in amount of four hundred thousand dollars but then regretted and criticized Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche with evil speeches. She made thus mistake due to her thought of hatred, but she never repented. Thinking of her faults, she felt so sad. Here she spoke them out to make repentance. She also prayed for the opportunity of listening to Buddha-Dharma.

One disciple made repentance: Not long ago, when listening to the Dharma recorder she heard the enlightenment bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that, one who does not know to respect the elder or help the newcomers could not be qualified to be the disciple of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Therefore, she thought she was really not qualified to be. She was laid off by her previous company. But she did not make introspection. Then she was taken in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company to work, but she shamelessly said that: “Ok. I will go help Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company.” Now she thought of it, she felt she had been so brazened at that time. Then, in the company, making mistakes over and over again, she became her boss and colleagues’ burden and even caused them to be punished. After she left Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company, she had wanted to apologize to her former boss and colleagues. It’s been more than one year, but she did not have the courage to do it. During this grand puja’s preparation, she handed something to a wrong person. However, the next day when she found the mistake, she even asked the receiver why he wrongly received that thing. She thought she was finished! She had not corrected herself at all for long. Even her husband talked to her: Are you like a Buddhist learner? Also, her children had ever attended puja, but they said they would no more attend. All of these are because she did not correct herself at all. She failed to live up Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings. Her life was saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Her house was found by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company. The consciousness of her grandmother was transferred by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.  Therefore, she repented of it. Here she was looking forward to this opportunity to apologize to them. To Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she repented her faults.

A disciple said: he has taken refuge for 3 and half years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches disciples by various means and his own life. Only when disciples must have made up their mind in learning Buddhism, they could achieve the way how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche attends to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Due to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s auspicious teachings, he was able to find self-problems little by little so as to correct them. However, spending most energy and time on the worldly affairs, after coming home, his longing for dharma become very weak. If we had earnest eager to dharma, the our longing for relying on guru and our thinking about seeing guru as Buddha would not arise within ourselves. Then our faith would not grow, and our reverence, our offering, our doing in accordance with guru’s teachings would not achieve. Long time ago when he was an ordained monk, he still had the longing for dharma. After resuming secular life, his longing for dharma became really weak. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, since starting Buddhism cultivation, has known who precious Buddha-Dharma is, and tantric dharma of Varjayana is even more rare and sublime than all the other dharmas. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been diligently practiced and cultivated the dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche devoted to Guru His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche with all offering that he has, including his own life because his loging for dharma is so strong. And therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could receive the transmission from His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. It is so marvelous that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has achieved great attainment in tantric teachings because it’s a long long time that there is no Vajra Guru with such attainment in Chinese region. But such a Vajra Guru is right in front of us. Because we don’t have the true longing for dharma, we therefore did not act attentively in serving to guru attentively, nor handling the centers affairs. Even we have broken the regulations. It was said in Sutra that now we are in the Fortunate Aeon and there would be 1000 Buddhas in the Fortunate Aeon, but among them, only 7 Buddhas will teach tantras. Therefore tantras are more previous than dharmas. It is already very hard to meet a guru. But it is more harder to meet a Vajra guru who benefits beings with tantras. Rinche Dorjee Rinpoche ever said that he wish some disciples could achieve the Phowa so that they could die at ease during their dying. But he did not really practice, nor does the mind of learning Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings arise within himself, how could he have the achievement in Rinpoche’s teachings? He repented that what he thought about attending pujas was to wish better life and work. But he did not think that the wish of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is to pass on the tantric teachings of Vajrayana in Han area. As for the health and success of disciples, they are merely byproducts. He deeply repented his thus attitude toward Buddhism cultivation. He also implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to continue to turn the wheel of the Dharma.

A disciple said: he was always trying to be a yes man since he was little, trying all efforts to please all family members and people he knew. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever said that being a yes man would fall into the Hell Realm as well. As a result, he brought suffering to the people surrounded instead. He originally joined an alliance of the trading department of the Glorious Jewel International Company. He formerly thought he was able to help Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s business. As a result, due to his carelessness on business, the business became slack. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche retook the joining-in store and transformed it into a direct distributor. He felt he was wrong to become Guru’s burden. He repented of thus errors.

A disciple said: She always thought that she was still young and did not have to make repentance. She has been selfish and showed no filial piety. Always desiring for pleasure and enjoyment, she only changed her mind while attending puja on every Sunday, but slipping back into her old ways after puja is finished. . She always attended pujas with the mindset of seeking comfortableness, pleasure, and protection. She did not truly practice Buddhism. Even for the transmission bestowed by Guru, she did not wholeheartedly practice the sessions. She repented of her slack attitude. She implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for forgiveness.

A disciple made repentance: Before her mother died of cancer, it was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings to eliminate her mother’s suffering and pains. When her mother passed away, it was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who conducted Phowa ritual to transfer her consciousness. Were it not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mercy, compassion, grace and blessing, her family would have been broken up and not lived in ease and happiness like now. She repented that she did not correct herself well in her body, speech, and mind. She made up her mind to make repentance and cultivate Buddhism, so as to repay the great grace of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Moreover, she thought being a volunteer in the Buddhist center could accumulate merits. But she merely seeks for self-convenience, without the mind of providing service to others. She is charge of taking care of believers’ bags but she lost the bag of one believer last week. She repented it so deeply.

A disciple who repented that she was responsible for the media work of this grand puja but had made various mistakes and let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to correct her. However, she still had not attentively corrected herself. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the disciple opportunity to do something, but she did not do it well. Therefore she felt repentant.

A disciple said that she had taken refuge for years but very few praised to other people Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s liberating traces and merits of Buddhist practice. Also, she felt she did not wholeheartedly tell others about the news of grand puja, as one of her relatives got the information from newspaper and asked her why she did not deliver the invitation. For these, she deeply repented.

A disciple made repentance: His friends attended the grand pujas for several times, and each time they felt it very sublime. Also Khenpo Namdol said that the grand puja held this time was very sublime. In the future, main and important responsibility of Drikung Kagyu Order would be Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, a rare Mahasiddha in the world, was tied merely by those worthless disciple, and couldn’t do things more important. Thinking of it, the disciple felt so shame to pray!

A disciple made repentance: In previous time when he prayed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for transferring the consciousness of his twins, he was shamelessly boastful in saying that: “He had one-hundred percent faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.” But till now his heart was still full of thoughts of greed, hatred, and delusion. Even the most basic part, the heart of offering and practicing charity has not risen in him. Here he deeply made repentance for it.

A disciple made repentance: He has sought refuge for eight years, and it would be endless to talk about the helps he has obtained. The most important is that he did not do well what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him to do. From now on he would profoundly repent and correct himself. Do his best for the task. He feels that the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center is as if a pure land in Taiwan. Unlike other centers, this center members seek no fame and wealth. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever said that if every disciple of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center could elicit ten-people strength, then the land of Taiwan would be peaceful and safe. He beseeched Guru to bestow another change, if disciples are still prospective.

Several disciple volunteers whose duty was off-site guiding expressed their repentance. In fact, they had seen that believers coming to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were either terribly ill, living in poor conditions, or having severe problems so that they had to consult Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Although they saw some in wheel chairs and others at an old age were among the crowd, they still had the believers wait several hours before their meeting with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, thinking that such a thing was normal and necessary. When believers asked them about the appropriate time to queue, they even replied that they had better come around 1 or 2 pm to queue for a number slip. Just as what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said to scold the disciples, they only cared about their own wellbeing, and were ignorant about the suffering of the surrounding sentient beings. They didn’t have mercy, compassion, or sympathy at all. Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said that the disciples should not contemplate on the merits while carrying out tasks, the disciples failed to change and still thought themselves doing favors for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

A disciple who was among the first to seek refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had used to live in Keelung. He lived in a haunted house, and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche traveled to his house twice to perform cleansing rituals for him, all at Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s own expense. When his mother suffered from mental problems, it was Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who helped her improve and thereby enabled them to come together as a family again to enjoy family happiness for several years. Thereafter, an accident took place in his family. His mother and daughter passed away in the incident. Upon knowing what had happened to him, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche left his unfinished meal and went into the shrine room to perform the Phowa to transfer his mother and daughter. His wife’s life was saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, too. Two years ago, his sister had a major car accident. Nonetheless, she survived and recovered soon after because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. His whole family had received such immense help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but he had not carried out his duty properly as a supervisor of the association. During the preparation for this grand ceremony, he got self-opinionated while drafting the reasons for protecting His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche in his application for police support. He had not thought clearly. What he had written might have caused others to have misunderstandings against Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche or might have even harmed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He was to blame for not regarding the guru’s safety as his first priority. Last year, during a puja held in India, he failed to escort the guru properly to the lounge due to lack of previous arrangements. If the venerable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was harmed, his teaching would not last. How many sentient beings would live without the help of the Buddhist teachings? He felt terribly repentant of his ignorance and heartlessness.

Another disciple expressed his repentance. As His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted him an opportunity to be a team leader, he failed to let his fellow Dharma brothers understand that His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had sacrificed his life to support the Buddhist teachings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had saved his family, his two children, and his marriage. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had granted him a job. He repented that he had made so many mistakes over and over again ever since seeking refuge, even though His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been giving him instructions as well as opportunities. He repented that, even with years in learning Buddhism, he had failed to have enough courage, perseverance, or determination. As a team leader, he failed to make his fellow Dharma brothers thoroughly understand Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s sincerity in his sacrifice for the Buddhist teachings. Having sought refuge for 10 years, he had made numerous mistakes. Even though his mistakes had been corrected and he had expressed his repentance, he still made more mistakes. He thereby vowed to the venerable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as well as the sentient beings that he would fall into the Vajra Hell if he is to violate his precepts. He wished to offer all of his body, speech, and mind to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Finally, he implored His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma throne and give the Buddhist teachings again. The sentient beings are in such extreme sufferings. They desperately need His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He thereby prayed and expressed his gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

A disciple who was also a supervisor of the association recalled that the benevolent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees to conduct the Thirty-Five Buddhas Repentance ritual early this year. At that time, she had vowed that she would never ever make any more mistakes. Unexpectedly, such a major mistake was made. She was still very selfish and never really cared about people around her, let alone learning the Buddhist teachings properly. Because of her mistake, all the suffering sentient beings were deprived the opportunity to listen to the Buddhist teachings. She felt great repentance and prayed for the compassionate and sympathetic guru to ascend the Dharma throne and bestow the Buddhist teachings again.

Another disciple first expressed his gratitude to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for allowing him to become a disciple five years ago. According to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the health and wealth of those who do not have sufficient merits would be reduced at around 50 years of age. It was His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s merits and protection that enabled him to live a peaceful life in the past years. He felt immensely grateful. Nevertheless, even though His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had painstakingly bestowed the Buddhist teachings on the Dharma throne every Sunday, he had failed to conduct the practice adequately, nor had he carried out the Ten Meritorious Acts properly. Thereby, his ordained child rebelled during her practice. Just as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said on the Dharma throne, he himself had not practiced well, so his children would follow his bad example. He sincerely showed his repentance to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Another disciple expressed his repentance. Having sought refuge for 10 years, the guru once admonished him, “Having sought refuge for 5 years, you are still fooling around.” However, another five years had passed, and he still makes mistakes, which even made the guru step down from the Dharma throne and refrain from bestowing the teachings. He felt great remorse because he had not practiced Buddhism or repaid the guru’s grace and kindness for so many years. He even prevented the Buddhist teachings from spreading and the sentient beings from listening to the Buddhist teachings. Why did he fail to act in accord with the teachings and continue to make mistakes? The reason lied in that he had not made offerings to or served the guru with a one-pointed mind and had failed to support the Buddhist teachings. Therefore, his wisdom was not revealed, his merits were not accumulated, and his practice was not achieved. In fact, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been giving him opportunities to make offerings, to support the lineage, to serve the Buddhist center, and to carry out tasks for the pujas so as to enable him to accumulate merits and virtuous connections and to benefit the sentient beings. However, he did not feel grateful or give his best carrying out the tasks assigned by the guru. He was always negligent in carrying out the tasks with his habitual patterns. Thinking that he had done a lot, he actually had not fulfilled his duty to protect the guru and the Buddhist center. He wanted to sincerely repent of all the things he had done. He knows perfectly well that making offerings to the guru is a responsibility, an obligation, and, moreover, an essential accumulation of one’s merits and connections to learn the Buddhist teachings for the benefit of the sentient beings. Without the guru, there will be no Buddhist teachings and one’s practice cannot be accomplished in this life, let alone benefiting the sentient beings. With his upmost sincerity and determination, he expressed his repentance and vowed that he would make offerings to the guru with a reverent and pure mind and would cultivate the Buddhist teachings diligently. He implored His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma throne and bestow the Buddhist teachings for the benefit of all the sentient beings.

A disciple thanked the Vajra guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving the disciples this opportunity to repent publicly. During the process of this great puja, she deeply realized that she always only thought of doing well on her own assigned matters, but neglected the fact that the great puja was held for all sentient beings. She was selfish, only thinking that she wanted to finish her assigned matters quickly and forgetting that this auspicious puja would not be held without the sentient beings attending the puja. Hence, she had never truly cultivated the compassion, mercy, and bodhicitta taught by the guru and used them in her daily life; she had also not noticed the sufferings of the attended believers. This is the most evil part of her. Because she did wrong, she sabotaged the opportunities for all sentient beings to listen to Buddha dharma. She recalled that she had discussed with many of her friends and colleagues who had only attended the great pujas that although they had only attended the great pujas, many of their thoughts and concepts would be changed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, which gave them positive effects on their works and lives. And even when discussing the work matters, her colleagues would consider what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would handle them if the matters were handled by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. These happened because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great blessings. Now, due to her own wrongdoings which let all sentient beings may lose such auspicious causes and conditions, she felt deeply repented and sinful. She really felt that the cycle of reincarnations is very suffering and truly hoped that all sentient beings can no longer reincarnate. Therefore, this cause and condition is really very important and precious for all sentient beings. She sincerely repented to the venerable Vajra guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and beseeched the guru to ascend the Dharma Throne again to teach Buddha Dharma, so that all sentient beings can have the cause and condition to listen to Buddha Dharma and to receive the teachings; so all of them can eventually be liberated from the sufferings of reincarnations.

A female disciple repented that she always thought she was a virtuous person. In the New Year, before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the repentance ritual of the thirty-five Buddhas, she had written down the things she wanted to repent. At the time, she had proudly thought that all of her committed mistakes should be completely written down within two or three letter papers. Unexpectedly, she could not finish writing down all of them with half a book of letter papers. These were mistakes which could be recalled. As for mistakes which could not be recalled, she did not know how many of them were there. And she did not have filial piety to her parents so that her father left the Chod puja during the middle of the dharma conduction. In addition, as a volunteer of the great puja, when serving the post of an on-site service staff, she did not do her work attentively and caused some believers to feel unhappy. She repented deeply for this behavior and beseeched Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving the disciples another opportunity. She also thanked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving the disciples the chance to repent publicly. During this period, she had a dream that her late grandmother said that she was very suffering. Because of the dream, she thought that at the time of her death Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche may no longer be alive; in that case, she will be extremely in pain. She appreciated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving us this opportunity to introspect.

A female disciple repented that she had learned Buddhism in other Buddhist venues before and had only been able to admire the guru remotely. However, after taking refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she felt very fortunate because she could have close interactions with the guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings can let the disciples see their own minor errors and cannot be found elsewhere. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stopped teaching Buddha dharma and descended the Dharma Throne last time, she felt sorry and would like to drag Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s feet; but she dare not. Although her appearance looked healthy, cheerful, and competent, actually, if it had not been because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help, she would have died long ago. She had once had the thought of suicide. She repented that she had not truly used Buddha dharma in her life and had not taught her children properly such that other family members had the idea that her children behaved badly because she did not set a good example; such ideas let the people around her speak bad words and criticize that she did not like a Buddhist. She must do virtuous deeds herself and not prevent others from practicing Buddha dharma.

A disciple repented that he had worked in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company and had enjoyed good benefits, but he did not do his job diligently. When he had heard others criticizing the guru, he had not stopped them or had had any reaction. He felt repented for this attitude.

A disciple repented that before he had taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche his mind had been very suffering because the greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt in his mind are stronger than those of ordinary people. After taking refuge and listening to the auspicious teachings, under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, he was able to be gradually away from the sufferings. Hence, he believes that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings can benefit sentient beings and all sentient beings need Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help. He implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma Throne to teach Buddha dharma. Furthermore, he also repented that when playing the musical instrument today to welcome Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche he did not play it well.

A disciple repented that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had saved her parents and husband. What can she use to repay Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s kindness? She repented that she had reproved others in the Buddhist institute in India. At the time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had wanted her to repent; but she had not done so. Later, in the puja in India, she felt jealous and angry towards the other disciples. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her to repent, she did not do it either. Next, she felt that she never did diligently anything Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had instructed; she did everything half-heartedly. She would like to promote the Bao-Yuan Balm; but she still competed with the Clinic of Glorious Jewel Chinese Medicine for business and sold the Bao-Yuan Balm to the disciples of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. As for the Buddha dharma taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she had practiced it without enthusiasm and had never done it diligently. When helping the task of drawing lots for lamp lighting in the great puja, she had not done it well and had caused an attendee to say that he would not attend the puja again the next time. Every time when she saw her parents in such healthy conditions, she knew that it was because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. However, she did not practice Buddha dharma diligently and she felt that she was depleting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s flesh and blood. Being a disciple of so many years, because of her own mistakes, she let the disciples who just took refuge and believers not have Buddha dharma to listen. She felt repented for this and hoped that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could give the disciples another opportunity and ascend the Dharma Throne to teach Buddha dharma again.

A disciple confessed as following and said that he had taken refuge with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for near ten years; he is a member of the Council. However, as a disciple he did not aware what’s happening until the error was exposed. Having not played his proper role of the Council, the disciple believes he must be punished. Moreover, the disciple would admit it as a repeated error since the occurrence of year 2005 affair that many vicious disciples had left this Buddhist center. The errors have occurred again and again such that the disciple does not dare to think he is allowed to confess here. As Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has often rebuked us: the repentance we have been making is merely a style of saying sorry; it cannot be acknowledged as repentance because we have the same mistakes repeatedly. The vow of Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is ‘to liberate all beings from sufferings’; the disciple believes that Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche aware in the very beginning that those bad disciples would commit to severe errors which actually happened in year 2005, even though Guru had not talked about it. In Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s perspective, there is no difference between a good man and an evil man; Guru always grants them chances in order to purify them. For many years the disciple has made countless mistakes in the services for this Buddhist center, and each time when he has faults Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would immediately rebuke him. The disciple would retrospect himself then and try to find out why he made mistakes again and again. Deep in his mind, he was really in terror of making mistakes again. The ignorance as well as bad habits in his mind is like a bottomless pit. He has no idea that in his remaining lifetime when he would encounter extreme hard time as a result. However, through the pervasive compassion and teachings from Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the disciple may face with his faults and correct them accordingly. Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the only Han Chinese in the Drikung Kagyu lineage. Even though Guru has experienced much wronged treatment, Guru has never said anything about it. This time in the course of the preparation of the grand puja, Guru has also encountered much unjust things; neither did Guru say anything about that. In the aspects of Buddha Dharma, Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been continuously granting his teachings upon us; in the daily life aspects, Guru has been showing us as an example of how to behave and how to act. Thus, the disciple expressed his understanding that, as disciples, we have to practice not only the teachings bestowed during the Dharma ceremonies but also, more importantly, disciples should seriously contemplate how to realize the teachings in our daily life. The disciple implored Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that, for the benefits of all beings including more than the hundreds of disciples here, Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could preside over Dharma ceremonies, and turn the Dharma Wheel. The disciple expressed his gratefulness to Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

A disciple confessed and said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed transmigration ritual for her father in eleven years ago; for many years, her mother has been under sheltering from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as well; her brother who has psychic problem has never taken any single tablet of sedative for more than ten years, yet her brother is getting better; in these ten years, Rinpoche has given her many jobs. One time she did ask a child that if the child has fear of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? “No”, the child replied. She said “I have pretty much fear.” The child said “It’s because you have no compassion.”This moment, the disciple confessed that she is not even comparable to a child. When she became unemployed not long ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hired her as a staff of the Glorious Jewel Antique Company. Days ago, in public gathering she even said that she is helping the Antique Company – meaning her job is significant to the company; she confessed that she does not bear in mind what gracefulness Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has bestowed upon; she has virtually lost the qualities of human being! Last year, many people had been harmed due to her negligence. She has not well followed the practices granted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; like a mouse hidden itself in the dark, she is always pretending no one could observe her and simply would like to maintain in such state. She had come to this venue with many fellow disciples days ago in order to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but in fact she was only adding trouble to the group. She continued, one day she confessed in front of the shrine table at her home, she admitted that all her trouble and faults originates from her greediness. At that night, she dreamed of a black snake in her home. Although through years of learning Buddhism, she still had such dreams out of greediness, hatred, and ignorance; she has almost cultivated nothing but the Five Poison in her mind. She confessed her deeds here, yet she is still trying to find out how to overcome her own problems and how to correct the faults. She did not dare to implore anything else but one thing: Guru, please continue granting your teachings.

One disciple made repented. Although he has taken refuge for 3 years he introspect himself that he does not completely rely on the guru, respect the guru, listen to what the guru teaches, and nor make the guru joyful. He also recalled in front of the mandala that he did not show reverence towards the guru at his first time of seeking audience with the guru. He is so grateful to Varjra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche;s compassion that Rinpoche granted him his request of seeking refuge. Today before he left home, seeing the news reporting the disasters all over the world, he thought over the teachings guru ever gave, that is do you see the sufferings of the sentient beings? Today we here in Taiwan fortunately have the blessings from His Holiness Drikung Kaybgon Chetsang and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and the rare and auspicious grand pujs, what happened to Taiwan was just the rains for a few days, no disasters at all. I as a disciple repented myself deeply. I was afraid of being eligible to pray. But thinking of the beings’ sufferings, I have no idea how to do. What I could do is repent myself deeply to pray Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ascend to the dharma seat to propagate Dharma.

One believer said her friends praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche very much after attending the grand pujas presided over by Rinpoche. Many believers in other major and famous Buddhist centers eat vegetables that cooked with meat, some eat vegetarian food only on the first and fifth day of a month, even so many believers still eat meat but these Buddhist centers do not correct their eating. Only Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches that one has to be vegetarian before taking refuge. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also keeps advising participants to be vegetarians during the grand pujas. Such a strict teachings is very rare and precious. It is so highly admirable. She pray that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could ascend to the dharma seat to salvage countless sentient beings.

One disciple repented that he himself does no change a tiny although he had taken refuge for several years. He did not correct his conducts but acts what he still was. He did not have true reverence towards guru within him and even he ever angry with the guru. He would fall into the Hell Realm more easily than he was since he still made the faults that he knew were wrong. He never thought that he should obtain the liberation from birth and death as soon as possible, and furthermore to help other beings in sufferings. He repented these so deeply.

There was another disciple who mentioned what he saw: His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made all efforts to protect and support his Guru and Order. He shows to disciples as an example of Buddhist learner through his body, speech, and mind. As being a lay Han Chinese person, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained the position of Rinpoche through true practices and enlightenment, having experienced numerous hardships and various obstacles. For Buddha-Dharma, for Drikung Kagyu Order, for disciples, he even lost his family. And all he has made efforts is with the intention to pass on what he has learned, the rare and auspicious Buddha-Dharma, in the world so as to benefit more sentient beings. For years, every week Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended the Dharma Throne and bestowed Buddhist teachings. By various means Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has constantly and earnestly given disciples advices, repeated persuasion, and strict warnings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also has kept on monitoring disciples, holding pujas, performing Dharmas, receiving believers, and unceasingly provided help to disciples, their family members, along with all the sentient beings with karmic relation. To save sentient beings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never considers about his own body and life. After performing Chod ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would even copiously bleed. Once, after successively performing Phowa four times for 4 dead in a day, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s breath and pulse stopped, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wouldn’t stop. All of these scenes seemed to appear before the disciples, which made them feel too shame to show their faces. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang Rinpoche has ever enlightened that the development of Drikung Kagyu Order needs Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. There was the dharma mother of an elder Rinpoche of our Order also told that dozens of Drikung Kagyu temples in Tibet and Qinghai need Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s support. If there had been no Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, these temples might have been closed. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never talked about such heavy burden on him. In order not to add burden to disciples, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche rather run his business to suppor the lineage. While some Rinpoches of our Order jointly excluded and slandered Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not say a word of it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche respect his root guru His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche so deep and so much that he would take any grievances without saying any words as this grand puja is His Holiness’s puja. However, how disciple attends to their guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is much less than how Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche attends to his guru. Disciples never really know to cherish the rare Guru in the world. For years disciples have continuously made mistakes, speaking that they would cultivate Buddhism but actually never put Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings into daily life. They felt guilty of the most heinous crimes, ungrateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s grace. What the unworthy disciples could do was to supplicate and make repentance on their knees, to make up their mind to rectify their errors thoroughly. They implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ascend the Dharma Throne to bestow teachings, to give disciples and beings the opportunity of listening to the rare and auspicious teachings bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Thus, all the sentient beings could obtain the Dharma help and liberated from the suffering ocean of reincarnation of birth and death.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sat up straight at his Dharma throne, patiently listening to the repentant speeches of the disciples and granting them an opportunity to face their mistakes and reform themselves. After tens of disciples took turns showing their repentance, the benevolent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the attendees to sit down. The disciples choked with sobs, prostrating themselves in gratitude for a long while. Thank you, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for accepting the repentance of the disciples. Thank you, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, for not giving up on the sentient beings!

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche waited until everyone was seated and the revenue became silent. Then, the following auspicious teachings were given:

The grand ceremony presided over by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang on June 6th seemed to be a success made by the devoted disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center with their great aspirations. However, if the officiating practitioner and the chief director had not had great Bodhichitta, the ceremony would not have been achieved or completed in perfection. For this grand ceremony, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang had performed a fire puja for power the day before his departure from India. Besides, upon returning to Taiwan from Mainland China a few days prior to the grand ceremony, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also performed a fire puja for peace that included wrathful visualization. The practitioner for a fire puja has to have the attainment of a Rinpoche, for the practice cannot be performed successfully simply with the Dharma text by an ordinary person. As such a grand ceremony for the benefit of innumerable sentient beings would have a lot of obstacles before its commencement, the officiating practitioner’s compassion and Bodhichitta were the basis for the perfect completion of the ceremony.

For this ceremony, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had employed a great deal of his personal connections, including those with the governmental and civil organizations as well as the police, so as to make the ceremony successful. It was not an easy task as you might have thought. Not all the lineage holders or Rinpoches are capable of holding such a grand ceremony. As everyone is aware that the news of this grand ceremony had not been advertised on any newspapers or magazines, 14,000 people still came to attend the ceremony. Many other Buddhist ceremonies did not have so many participants even with the help of paid whole-paged advertisement in the newspapers.

Apart from helping bring peace to Taiwan and the whole world for the sentient beings in the six realms, this grand ceremony provided the all-important opportunity for the sponsors and the actual participants to form profound connections with the Buddhist teachings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts everything without pursuing his own fame or wealth. Had it been for pursuing his fame and wealth, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have spoken for a couple of minutes before the ceremony commenced, which would spread his name among the 14,000 participants. Nevertheless, as His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang was taking the main role in the ceremony, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche spoke nothing and merely followed His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang quietly throughout the ceremony.

While being exclusively interviewed by a Taiwanese TV station, the host of the program asked for the definition of a heart son. In response, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang explained with a few brief words: “a disciple carries out and completes what his guru asks him to do. That is what a heart son is.” As to ways to bring joy to your guru, the great Gampopa once mentioned three ways to make your guru joyful. The lesser one is to offer with all of one’s possessions. The better one is to offer with one’s own body, speech, and mind. The greatest one is to practice and attain Enlightenment as a means to offer to one’s guru. As you have achieved none of the aforementioned, you should at least rejoice and be obedient. Although you people are incapable of benefiting the sentient beings, you can join a grand ceremony such as the one held on June 6th by rejoicing the officiating practitioner and the chief organizer. The merits and virtues accumulated with rejoice are vast, for such a grand ceremony is able to help the sentient beings to form profound connections with the officiating guru, the Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. As you are unable to achieve what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has done, you should at least be obedient and learn Buddhism without being self-opinionated.

During the time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche refrained from ascending the Dharma throne, a disciple wrote a letter and had an owner of a funeral parlor pass it on to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He also bid the owner not to give the letter to any disciple of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. With his extensive social experiences, the owner knew what it was about without even reading the letter. Originally, he didn’t want to pass the letter to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had someone tell him: “You could have refused to take the letter, but you didn’t. As you have accepted the request, you should then pass the letter to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.” The letter talked about how the Buddhist center could be organized by establishing certain routines. Additionally, the disciple recommended his son to carry out duties, thinking that his son was talented with college education, and stated his son’s background experiences.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself had established many rules so as to make the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center operate smoothly. However, the people are the origin of all the problems as they have failed to listen and be obedient. As there are laws in the country and many criminals who commit illegal deeds still rise every single day. There are company rules, too, but many people still make mistakes. It is the people that cause all the problems. It does not mean that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wouldn’t let you express your opinions. Nevertheless, the means adopted by the disciple was to get his message across by trying to overpower one another. He didn’t understand how his guru conducted things. Without passing his letter through the staff of the Buddhist center, thinking that they would deceive Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and that his guru would be deceived and thereby have no knowledge of a lot of things, the disciple actually did not believe the attainment of his guru’s practice at all. Nor did he believe the great powers of his guru.

Besides, the person looked down upon the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and had not been sympathetic or compassionate upon learning about his fellow Dharma brothers’ mistakes. Who is faultless? Should he have done that, simply because he has got a good relationship with the owner of the funeral parlor? The owner has seen a lot in the society. He does not obey to anybody in the world and is only submissive with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He prostrates himself whenever he sees Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and his business has been booming because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The number of sentient beings benefited by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the past decade is larger than that by the many well-known Taiwan-based Buddhist groups altogether. Although you people know that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has great capabilities, you have no idea how capable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is. Do not think that you are qualified to have comments about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. If you cannot achieve what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is capable to achieve, you are not eligible to criticize. If the disciple does not verbalize his repentance next week, he shall refrain from coming!

If you can use your connections to help the Buddhist center and make the Buddhist center better, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will be very glad that you can do so. Many attendees here know many rich and powerful people, even some people themselves are rich. But have you heard that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked anybody to use his connections to help Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s matters? No. Have you heard that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked anyone to accompany Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche every day or help Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to do anything? No! Unless Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that doing so can help the person to accumulate some virtues to prevent something from happening to him. Do not look down on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It is impossible for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to sit on the Dharma throne without powerful skills. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche focused on people instead of the matters, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could not benefit so many sentient beings. You can see that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has so many disciples. This is impossible if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not have powerful abilities.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mentioned that there was a disciple who just repented publicly and said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been criticized by many people before the great puja held on June 6. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never mentioned anything about this to others. Why? It was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had known that he must have not done well in certain places such that other people felt uncomfortable. Hence, he had been criticized; this was also a way of repaying the karmic debt. Furthermore, people make mistakes; if a person has not done anything wrong, he will have attained Buddhahood. Those who think that they have not committed any wrongdoing and do not need to repent should not come to practice Buddha dharma!

There are two stages in practicing Buddha dharma. When beginning to practice Buddha dharma, you have to follow what the guru has taught you and do regular practices of Buddha dharma such that sufficient amounts of practices are done. You are in the second stage when you have done enough or immeasurable amounts of practices. This is like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s present condition. Every move or every thought of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is to benefit sentient beings and is to practice Bodhisattva’s path. Do not think that you are practicing Buddha dharma when reciting sutras or making repentance prostrations by yourselves at home. You must follow and truly practice what the guru has taught you. Do not think that it looks like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not done anything special. This is not what you can see on the surface. If the amount of your practice is not sufficient, you will naturally not be able to continue to practice more advanced Buddha dharma and to attain accomplishments.

You have not yet been in the stage of true suffering; so you cannot understand the concrete suffering. Wait until you are really in pain, then you can realize the preciousness of Buddha dharma. The suffering you think you have now is just caused by your unbalanced attitude. When you have not yet taken refuge and have hardships, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will save you for one or two times; this is in line with what the Buddhist sutras have stated, “attracting you with your desires”. However, when your problem has been solved, you have to start to help yourselves to correct your behaviors and cannot depend on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche anymore. Do not think that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not die. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that when he will die. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has grown old and the time Rinpoche is alive does not remain much. That is, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will die earlier than you will.

The lives of the 99% of the people here were saved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. How did those in ancient times repay the savior of their lives? They would repay by being the savior’s slave or servant. How about you? If you had not met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, how much money would you spend to resolve the problems in your families? You might not be able to resolve them even exhausting all of your assets! And now after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had saved you, you then began to plan your life again, to reallocate your money, and began to haggle over every ounce. Do not think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants your money. The offerings returned by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not a few hundred or thousand NT dollars, but was a few million or ten million NT dollars, including houses. As long as your mind of making offerings is not related to obtainment of liberation from reincarnation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will never accept your offerings; because you are unwilling to truly practice Buddha dharma, receiving your offerings will make Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche owe you.

The sutra of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has stated that the sentient beings’ minds are very easy to slack off. Buddha Sakyamuni knew this, especially for the human beings on earth; so Buddha Sakyamuni told all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Dharma protectors particularly to bless the human beings’ minds so that their minds will not slacken; and Buddha Sakyamuni also asked the virtuous gods who protect and support Buddha dharma to watch over human beings’ minds. Among the four major sects of Tibetan Buddhism, everyone knows that the teachings of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are famously strict, rigorous, and completely follow the Buddhist scriptures and His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang’s teachings to promote Buddha dharma. In some other Buddhist centers, they allow non-vegetarian disciples to attend pujas; they curry favor with the believers and say that the believers have practiced well and looked like Avalokiteshvara; they promote Buddha dharma actually for the purpose of collecting offerings. They describe their flattery euphemistically as helping the believers to plant the seeds of learning Buddhism. But when will the seeds germinate? It would be very uncomfortable if the seeds do not sprout. You will come to practice Buddha dharma today, because you have planted the seeds of practicing Buddha dharma in your past lives. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s work is to get your seeds sprout and thrive. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is an experienced practitioner and is a lay person the same as you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has gone through all of the various problems you have encountered today; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has experienced the sufferings you have encountered as well. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows how to help you so that the seeds can germinate, thrive and grow into a big tree. To germinate, a seed needs fertilization and cultivation. Fertilization is to sometimes speak about what you would like to hear; cultivation is to dig out your incorrect and bad behaviors, to correct you, and to monitor you.

Do not think that you are helping Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who gives you opportunities to plant virtuous conditions and create virtuous connections with other sentient beings. Is it possible for you to create good connections with others with your ordinary bad manners? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not need your help. With Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ability, if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants to see someone, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can see him by just making a phone call. What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche needs is just Rinpoche’s guru, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not need you. The people in the venue of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center become more and more while the sitting space becomes less and less; the space is not big enough. For the believers who have not taken refuge, if you still have any doubt and feel that you do not like the atmosphere here, you should not come again. Today, there are five disciples who are expelled from the Buddhist Center. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche feels that he has too many disciples; having one more disciple is nothing while losing one more disciple is also nothing to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has a thorough knowledge of his own accomplishments, has the notion that spreading Buddha Dharma here is merely one of the possibilities; Rinpoche is not obliged to grant you teachings. For example, some of great practitioners of the Drikung Kagyu lineage had not disseminated Dharma teachings in the latter part of their lifetime, simply because the beings had not aspired after the teachings. Nonetheless, the great practitioners had been constantly benefiting sentient beings even though they were always in their retreats. You must be aware that, if you make the same mistake again, His Holiness will no longer accept your pleading for mercifulness and appease you. Even though His Holiness did not say that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche assures you that His Holiness would help you for this time only because His Holiness fully understood why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not presided over Dharma ceremonies here.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been always grant teachings and blessings according to the beings’ causes and conditions. Just as the speech of confess given by a disciple a moment before, if you have not cultivated renunciation mind, have not aspired after the Dharma, have not vowed to liberate from cyclic life and death, you would not be able to develop your faith. To those who wish to have personal gain through learning Buddhism, please do not participate any more. To those who feel that all people surrounding them have faults except their own, and those who are not motivated to correct their own deeds, please do not participate any more, either. In your discourse of learning Buddhism, if you hope to encounter favorable things and no more unpleasant ones, it would be in vain; learning Buddhism is totally not about making you feel pleased. In sutras, the so-called ‘to burst with joy’ does not refer to ‘obtaining happiness’, instead, it refers to the states of mind before and after learning Buddhism; one’s mind is intertwined before, and only could it become open by learning Buddhism. If you stick to your own thinking, nor you change your own deeds, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would stop grant teachings upon you. That is, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would leave from here. Why do you always make mistakes on your work? Why don’t you respect the experienced colleagues and look after the junior ones? It is because you don’t admire others. Should you feel stressed in the face of performing tasks, it is because you don’t think you have any fault nor correct your deeds. If one know that he does not do thing well enough and I swilling to correct his conducts, how could he feel stressed? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, from his familiar with human affairs, has not ever sensed the so-called stress. Do your best; abandon clinging attachment to the results.

Today, you got this chance because of His Holiness’s instruction; His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche instructed the Rinpoche to resume presiding over the ceremony. Nonetheless, His Holiness does not assure you that the Rinpoche will not leave, nor assure that you are allowed to make the fault again. The principle is that practitioners will accomplish their words; they might not accomplish those of unsaid words. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever emphasized that it is the most difficult task to change one’s own self; therefore, if you could not completely follow the teachings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would disappear from here. You don’t have the second chance.

June 25, 2010

At the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei, His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious Chod puja of Drikung Kagyu Order. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first instructed that it was the first time for many of you to participate in the Chod puja. There are three branches in Buddhism: Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Hinayana is also known as Theravada, originating in India and spreading to Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and so on. While Mahayana was populated in China and Japan, Vajrayana was only well-known in Tibet. These three branches of Buddhism were all taught by the Buddha Sakyamuni. The differences lie in the ways how people practice Buddhism and the purposes of practicing it.

As the Buddha Sakyamuni first turned the dharma wheel, the Buddha began with teaching Hinayana, including the Four Noble Truths, the Twelve Nidanas, and The Thirty-Seven Qualities (Bodhipakkhiyā dhammā). The ways that the Buddha taught Hinayana were relevant to the ancient society of India. In ancient as well as modern India, caste system has been dominant. The barrier between different castes is distinct. If one was born as an aristocrat, he’ll be an aristocrat in his whole life. If one was born as an untouchable, he’ll remain one in life no matter how hard he’d try to change the status. Thus life is painful for them. To escape constrains of the caste system, many people started to learn Hinayana. There is a saying that prosperities of a family will lead to profound karma. Any family relationship will definitely result in karma so dose any mundane business. Family will give rise to many afflictions which are poison. In the teachings of Hinayana, one shouldn’t be attached to family relationship. Nor should one get involved with mundane business. Thus, practitioners of Hinayana have to be ordained. They recognize the suffering of reincarnation in the six realms and wish to achieve liberation. Among disciples of the Buddha Sakyamuni, many of them were arhats. Practitioners of Hinayana primarily practice Agama Sutra and they can at most achieve the level of arhats. However, if practitioners of Hinayana can’t vow to accomplish liberation, there will be no effect even if they can memorize the whole sutra.

During the middle period, the Buddha began to propagate Mahayana which is also known as the ways of practicing Bodhisattva’s path. Basically, most Bodhisattvas are lay practitioners. Except Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, all other Bodhisattvas are with hair, including Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, Manjusri Bodhisattva, the Eight Great Bodhisattvas and so on. Practitioners of Mahayana practice Buddhism based on scriptures of the Buddha Sakyamuni. These scriptures are words of the Buddha, which contents are the practicing experience of the Buddha Sakyamuni. They also include all the principles of the Buddha Dharma. That’s why Mahayana is also named Exoteric Buddhism. Practitioners of Mahayana realized the suffering of reincarnation in the six realms and wish to be liberated. Additionally, they also know that it’s not sufficient to liberate self. If other sentient beings are still suffering in the reincarnation, they can not be liberated, either. Practitioners of Mahayana, therefore, wish to help liberate others after they themselves achieve liberation. By cultivating Six Paramitas, they would obtain the level of Bodhisattva.

The goal of practicing Hinayana is to get rid of afflictions, whereas in Mahayana Buddhism, it says that human beings can’t escape from afflictions and desires. Through gradual influence of the Buddha Dharma, afflictions and desires can be extract and purify to become a tool to benefit sentient beings. Compared with Mahayana, Vajrayana directly used afflictions as a tool for helping sentient beings. Those who practice Vajrayana would wish to benefit all sentient beings after they achieve Buddhahood. Nonetheless, applying the Buddha Dharma in daily life requires certain methods that are embedded in Vajrayana.

For instance, the Chod puja is to use sentient beings’ craving for food. By contemplation, practitioners of the Chod rituals would transform their fleshy body into favorite food of sentient beings and then summon them to the mandala to eat the food. This method is especially effective for beings in the ghost realms. The Chod rituals would first satisfy their craving desire and then by Buddhist teachings practitioners can help them to get free of suffering. In this world, it’s extremely rare for one to meet a Buddhist practitioner who can achieve Buddhahood in this lifetime. Even if one can meet such a great practitioner, he may not recognize his greatness. Nor can he understand. It’s like an elementary school student can’t understand the life of a college student. On the contrary, a college student can definitely know what an elementary school student has been doing. Judging from the perspective of an elementary school student, misunderstanding of a college student’s life would be inevitable, not to mention that, in terms of Buddhist learning, you are not even in the level of an elementary school student.

One can’t obtain the Buddha Dharma by asking for it. Nor can one change everything by attending several pujas. If it is true that by attending pujas you can receive blessings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and thus your karmic retributions can be altered, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be the first one not to practice the Buddha Dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would be clinging to His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and beseeching blessings because His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang has been recently staying in Taiwan. How come Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to painstakingly practice the Buddha Dharma? As a matter of fact, the Buddha Dharma will not be effective without your actual practicing and applying it. In so doing, you might be able to change your karma. What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can do is to continuously and earnestly teach you and give your advices. Given all these, it still depends on your determination to change your conducts. The hands of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are always palms facing up, meaning they are always ready to receive you. Their hands are not palms facing down. You must be willing to reach out so that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can take you in.

Someone came to beseech Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not to let her mother have cancer. She explained that she was from a single-parent family and that her mother was a kind person who has raised her up alone. Her explanations indicated her disbelief in the law of cause and effect. Most cancers are resulted from people’s consuming meat. Those animals that were eaten by humans would come to seek help of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If humans pray not to have cancers, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas would not know how to help them. Since Buddhas and Bodhisattvas know the cause and effect of our conducts, they will use the best method to help us. If we violate the law of cause and effect and wish our mothers won’t die from cancers, who would help those pigs and chickens that may have children, may be parents of someone else, or may be your parents in the past lifetimes? Those who are still consuming meat are people without any sympathy. Why can’t you quit eating meat? It’s due to your greediness. You still remain the desire for the taste of eating meat. Most modern diseases are due to eating meat, meaning by killing, but some of you here still do not believe in the law of cause and effect. Actually, even doctors of Western medicine would inform you that what kinds of illness are caused by what kinds of food you ate or by what kinds of conducts you’ve committed. Isn’t this the law of cause and effect?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dares to say that he has never done evil things since a little child, he has been showed filial piety to parents, and he has tried his best to help his friends in need, even by providing financial support to them. A person like him would be regarded by you as a good person! However, before learning Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche liked to eat seafood in particular. He was even able to tell whether or not a fish or a shrimp was wild-caught from sea or it was farm-raised. He would like to eat the freshest one, by which he easily ate the ones killed on the spot. Asking others to kill the animals by saying “I want this one. Please help to kill it for me” would be doubly guilty. Later on, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started Buddhism cultivation at his age of thirty six. He learned very fast. When he was forty-five, he was already able to help sentient beings. Nevertheless, he acquired skin cancer at the age of forty five or forty six. But he never seeks for any operation, medical treatment, or takes any medicine for the cancer, as he knows this is his personal karma. And he thinks it would be very good if having cancer could replace the karma of falling into hell and having a short life. After being aware of getting cancer, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche merely prayed to the Dharma protector in saying that if he could pay off all karma, if dying is good for him, just let him die; if his life could benefit sentient beings, please let him live on. As Buddhas and Bodhisattvas know our causes and conditions, they will adopt the best method for us. Hence, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thoroughly hands himself over to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Now Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is at the age of sixties. For the past twenty years, he did not get that brilliant life as well.

You have seen many cancer patients at the terminal stage would have ascites, and that comes from their having thought of greediness. Even the beings you ate have gotten rebirth, their complaint and hatred are still remained in your body, which cause you pains and suffering. You can prove this by taking a look at those deceased whose consciousness has been transferred by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Their ascites just disappear without excretion after their consciousness is transferred. It is because they, including those in ascites, are all transferred! The greediness, maybe for eating only, that arises in you makes you keep on hurting sentient beings. And thus greediness also becomes the ascites that brings you pains. Scientists say that because people eat meat, the stockbreeding become popular, and it leads to the warming of the earth and destroys the ecosystem. People among you think it inconvenient to adopt vegetarian diet and feel it may impact your business. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, a vegetarian, also can do much business! Even in France, a boss of a famous brand store invited Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to a five-star restaurant. There the boss especially asked the chief to prepare vegetarian diet for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. How can you say that a vegetarian is not able to do business?

Nowadays, in many Buddhist centers, their disciples are allowed to eat meat. They are expected to slowly change the habit. But people should not be supposed to slowly cease evil behaviors. Let’s take a similar example for illustration: a thief who executes steals five times a week is advised by you to do it twice a week; Even so, he is still a thief who does evil. He is still the same! It is stated in the Sutra that people who like to eat meat will definitely fall into hell. If you are still not going to correct yourself, just go to other centers. Currently there are some centers, lacking of believer, will welcome your coming. This center is getting more and more clouded, almost to be filled to its capacity. No worry. After some people leave here, other people will then come to fill it up!

You all are used to indulging your hearts and living a good life. So you go to drink alcohol, eat meat, and do evil. Some people left this center after they took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and after several years passed, they wanted to come back. However, they couldn’t just do it, as they already broke their vows to Guru, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and sentient beings. The reason for some women cheated by men is also following the law of causes and effects. It is because they had ever cheated their Guru, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and karmic creditors. Some people may consider love to be the most important thing in their life. But the truth is that love won’t help to prolong your life, nor does it help you to become rich. In Buddhist view, this is just about your greediness. Love has nothing to do but with one’s karmic relationship.

The reason why people would say they have no idea how to make repentance and how to develop the repentant heart is that they never have the heart of benefitting sentient beings. People who do not know to make repentance are those who never feel they do the wrong things, so the repentant mind cannot arise in them. You only look at others’ faults rather than yours. For example, some people still always criticize others doing wrong. Please always think about impermanence. Only by the practice can you no longer have clinging.

During the puja held in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, all attendees sit in a pad with their legs crossed. There may be some people who feel cold taking the cloths as a cover, while some people who feel their legs hurt raising their legs. The reason for bringing you the hardship is that, by this way, you could realize that Buddha-Dharma is not easy to obtain. There was a person sitting below gave yawns. It is because that person thought today he just attended the puja for some trifle things, and he did not need to listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche speaking so many principles. He thought that those doctrines had nothing to do with him himself. With this kind of thoughts, so he gave yawns. Is it also wrong for a person to yawn even if he is tired? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just gave the answer by manifesting himself in the grand puja: Even though the last night he slept merely two to three hours, the next day in the grand puja presided over by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still straightened his clothes and sat properly, with no exhausted appearance at all. In the grand puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s every movement and every action on the Mandala could be seen on the monitor. It could be seen very clearly that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had attentively attended the puja from the beginning to the end. This indicated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s respect to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, to Buddha-Dharma, and to sentient beings. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told you that you could gain reward of ten million dollars for your good sitting, you would have sat still without any movement. Without reverent and repentant heart to Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, you could not develop the mind. Listening to Buddha-Dharma is not listening to principles. If you want principles, you could just go other places and pay money for some addresses, not here!

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already been lenient to all of you. According to Buddha Sakyamuni’s teachings, she would have been scolded and expelled. Those who attend puja with this kind of attitude would better to go to other centers where they can comfortably sit in sofa while listening to Buddhist teachings. There when they feel tired, they may take a nap and then go back listen to the teachings again.

The Chod puja you attended today is one of the Eight Sadhanas in Tibetan Buddhism as well as a great practice. It is practiced in Nyingmapa, Kagyupa, and Sakyapa. It is extremely difficult and painstaking to learn the Chod puja. A great deal of courage is needed in the practice. Besides, the practice of the Chod puja is very difficult and painstaking, too. It is very rare for a practitioner accomplished in the practice to be able to perform the Chod for others. It is even rarer to see a public Chod puja practiced for so many people. Nowadays, it is almost impossible to find another puja like this. There are many prayers in the Dharma texts of the Chod puja to help the sentient beings. If the practitioner does not have wisdom, merits and virtues, he will fail to help the sentient beings and even do harm to himself. You people do not cherish the opportunity and even yawn during the puja. If you are thinking for yourself or trying to transfer your own relatives, your karmic creditors from previous lives will prevent you from listening to the Buddhist teachings. It is because you are evil. This Buddhist center is different from any other places, for you will be scolded if you yawn.

You came to the puja for transferring consciousnesses in order to liberate and salvage your deceased relatives, friends, and ancestors and to help the sentient beings leave the three lower realms for the upper realms. What is more important is that you yourselves have to be liberated and salvaged. You do not have to wait until you draw your last breath to be salvaged. When you are still alive, your hearts need to be liberated and salvaged already. Therefore, you know that vows should be taken to gain rebirth in the Pureland and that you should make preparation for the future. To liberate is to lift you off the sea of sufferings in reincarnation. You people unknowingly suffer in reincarnation every single day. To salvage is to help transfer you to the far shore.

All of you have seen your relatives and friends pass away. Did you see their suffering on the verge of their deaths? During the many years that passed, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never seen anyone dying without suffering, except for an old man in his nineties and disciples having learned Buddhism under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Many disciples are doctors, but none of them know how to relieve the physical and mental suffering of their dying patients. The physical and mental suffering taking place before one’s death is only explained with the Buddhist teachings. What’s more, anyone passing away in a residence needs to be examined by a prosecutor, according to the law. Therefore, many people send their dying family members to the hospital, thinking that resuscitating measures might save their relatives’ lives. Some even cry bitterly and yell at their family members or friends in hopes that they would come back to life at their wailing.

In fact, the length of one’s lifespan is determined by his merits and has nothing to do with medical treatments they receive. Even western doctors think that there is no need resuscitating a patient who is unable to live on with his medical condition. Therefore, peace may stay with the dying patient at his final moments. During the 8 hours after a person draws his last breath, his breath would discontinue but his senses of hearing and feeling would become even more sensitive. Any remark or touching would make the deceased person suffer. So, if you cry by a deceased person, your crying won’t get his life back and will bring immense suffering to him instead. Modern western resuscitating measures conducted after one’s last breath would bring great suffering to the deceased person and would even cause him to generate hatred. When performing practices for a deceased person, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gets to know his or her thoughts. Any deceased person who underwent resuscitating measures would generate hatred in his or her heart because of having such a painful experience. When being liberated and salvaged by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, those who underwent resuscitating measures would tell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that they feel great pain in their chests.

The doctors are unable to relieve the mental and physical suffering of a person on the verge of his death. Additionally, you have no idea at all as to where you would go after this life. All of these can only be answered with the Buddhist teachings.

Attending today’s puja, you should not only have reverence towards the Three Jewels, but also feel repentance of the evil karma you have created in your previous lives. Additionally, you should have mercy and compassion. Do not think that you have more merits than others. The fact that you are able to be here is a result from your previous karmic connection or your ancestors’ connections with the Buddhas and Bodhisattva. However, there are still numerous sentient beings who cannot attend the puja due to lack of karmic connections. You should feel sympathetic to those who are unable to come to the puja. Don’t think that you come by yourself. You should think that you are attending the puja on behalf of those without proper connections and hope that your attendance can help them leave their suffering.

During Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s practice, all the attendees would be asked to recite three times of their names and the names of their living relatives or friends that they wish to help. Also, the attendees would be asked to recite the names of any deceased person and their ancestors in need of help three times. The attendees may think of their seniors being on their right hand side, people whose status are either equal or inferior to them on their left hand side, the sentient beings in the six realms staying behind them, and their karmic creditors from previous lives being in front of them with their faces towards the mandala. Thereafter, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to perform the auspicious Drikung Kagyu Chod puja and led the attendees in the recitation of the Six Syllable Mantra for quite a long time.

Upon perfection of the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then gave more teachings. Many people like to read, listen to, and understand a lot of Buddhist teachings. The Buddhist teachings are not for you to understand, nevertheless. If you were able to understand the teachings, you would be a Buddha. Just as the teachings given at the beginning of the puja, the wars in this world result from meat-eating and life-killing. Anything taking place in this universe has everything to do with us. For example, an earthquake occurring in Taichung would have impact upon Taipei as well. Flooding in the southern part of Taiwan would influence the prices of the vegetables in northern Taiwan. What happens around the world or even the universe is related to us. We shall refrain from thinking only about ourselves. That is why the Buddhist teachings are so valuable.

If you continue to eat meat after attending the puja, do not come anymore. Maybe you think that you will be able to come in anyway, since there are so many people attending the puja and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche might not know about your attendance. However, your karmic creditors, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas would definitely know. Everything has its cause and effect. It would be fine even if you lie to your guru, the Buddhas, or Bodhisattvas, for you are the one to take on the responsibility for the cause and effect of your action. Why would Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scold someone at seeing him or her yawn during the puja. It is because such a person merely attends the puja for benefiting himself or herself. If you come to the puja simply for your own benefit, or to liberate and salvage your own family members, your karmic creditors from previous lives will not be able to receive help. They would thereby make you feel tired and fail to listen to the Buddhist teachings because you have an evil heart.

Several years ago, there had been a scandal of someone secretly filming a celebrity’s intimate activity and spreading the film with a DVD in Taiwan’s society. At the time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche strictly prohibited the disciples to watch that DVD which contained the furtively recorded film. Some people thought that was it so serious for just a curious look? Imagine that if you were the celebrity at the time, would you like to be filmed secretly and then have the film watched publicly by others? No one here would be willing to do that. A few days ago, the news reported that the person who reported and published this recording died because of kidney disease at the age of seventies, which can be considered as an early death. His daughter was also in jail under the punishment of law. A person will have a kidney disease if he has broken the precept of sexual misconduct. The sexual misconduct does not just include adultery with other’s husband or wife. It also includes something like this that issuing this kind of DVD and let those who watch the video generate the desire of a lust. Those who have seen this DVD will naturally have their karmic retributions. Those who have seen this DVD will have a karmic retribution of them being watched by others in the future.

The contents of Buddhist scriptures are vast. However, all Dharma texts will mention the following four verses: “Avoid doing any evil; do all virtues; doing so will naturally purify one’s mind; this is the teachings of all Buddhas.” This is one of the most important essences of Buddha dharma. Any behavior which benefits oneself but will harm others is evil. When seeing someone doing virtues, you should not be jealous and should rejoice for the person. Right now, your most frequently committed problem is that you continuously do small evils and think that doing just small evils does not matter and do not deeply believe in the law of cause and effect. Small evils accumulated together will become a big evil. In this world, if there is one less person to do evils, there will be one less portion of evil retribution. Do not think that other people’s evildoings have nothing to do with you. In the eyes of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, there is no right or wrong, just cause and effect.

These verses are saying that all evil things cannot be done again and all virtuous things that benefit sentient beings should be done continuously; if one can start from one’s actions and all of what one has done is virtuous, one’s spoken words will follow the actions and be virtuous. When coming to Taiwan thirty years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first learnt the three-character foul language before learning the Chinese Mandarin. Until two years after learning Buddhism and practicing dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche one day suddenly discovered that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not spoken again the three-character foul words which were often spoken before. It was not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche deliberately stopped saying the three-character words; it was that when one’s body is purified, one’s words will be purified naturally and one’s evil thoughts will no longer appear. The dharma text has stated, “Because of the purified body precept, the precept of words will be virtuous and the precept of mind will be purified naturally.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not seen this sentence before; however, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has verified this sentence from his own experiences of practicing Buddha dharma. We can see the manifestation of Buddha dharma from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s body.

Holding precepts cleanly is not for protecting you from harms, but for not wishing to harm any sentient beings. Precept is not a tool of reward or punishment; it is to tell you what you can do and what you cannot do to help you away from doing evil deeds. If you have held precepts well, naturally you will not do wrong things. The sentence of “avoid doing any evil and truly do all virtues” is to give you a range for your actions and behaviors; it is also to let you know what things should not be done. Precept is the beginning of virtues. Those who are willing to hold precepts are beginning to be in the range of doing virtues. When you are willing to begin to do your deeds towards the virtuous direction, the power of the virtuous mind will arise. If you have not been able to benefit others, you should listen to Buddha’s teachings and begin to change from your own actions. It is hard for you to eliminate evil thoughts because you have not begun to do virtues in your actions. If you can do virtues in your actions, gradually your thoughts will change towards virtues as well such that you will no longer do wrong things and can do virtuous deeds naturally. In the verse of “Naturally purify your mind”, “naturally” is not artificial. Without suppressing deliberately, your mind will be purified! The preciousness of Buddha dharma is in its natural progress which is not grudging or reluctant. You feel that Buddha dharma is difficult because your mind is too complicated. All Buddhas attained Buddhahood from practices in the human realm; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also attained achievement in this life from an ordinary person; hence, all of you can certainly attain achievements. The verse of “this is the teachings of all Buddhas” says that the above mentioned is the true meaning of Buddha dharma.

Last time, there was still someone who asked His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang that why his mind was chaotic and could not concentrate when reciting sutras. Why will your bad thoughts always arise and cannot be restrained? Because your mind is evil, you will have evil thoughts. You would think that you have recited Buddhist sutras and become a vegetarian; where will the evil be? The evil will be there! You hope that, through practicing Buddha dharma, you could be enlightened or have your matters be somewhat smooth; these are all for yourself. Anything for yourself will definitely hurt others. Your minds are all full of greed, hatred, and the ideas of not believing in the law of cause and effect. You do not believe in the law of cause and effect, so you cannot keep precepts and is an evil person. Many people are afraid of taking refuge and say that they worry they cannot keep the precepts. The Buddha dharma stated in Buddhist scriptures can certainly be done; Buddha Sakyamuni attained Buddhahood from being a human practitioner; all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas attained Buddhahood from the human realm as well; you are just reluctant to change resolutely! Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had attained achievements and you can attain achievements as well. If you know that every action, speech, and thought of your own now will certainly have karmic retributions in the future, you would be able to achieve accomplishments. You say you cannot do because you do not believe in the law of cause and effect; A person who deeply believes in cause and effect will always ponder whether he will harm sentient beings before doing any action or speaking any word. Do not blurt out everything at one blast what you would like to say without considering what other people think.

Until now, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still repenting his body, speech, and mind and is still correcting his behaviors every day. The meaning of practice is not doing morning practice and evening practice, attending a few pujas every month, or worshiping at fixed intervals within a year. The true practice is to correct your actions, speeches, and minds with the methods taught by the Buddha. If you cannot change your deeds, you are not in practice. Whether taking refuge or not, if you do not want to change yourself, I beg you not to come again.

What you really should practice is to purify and cleanse your body, speech and mind and follow the teachings of the Buddha Dharma. If you can achieve these, you’ll be able to obtain the blessings of the Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. So will you be able to extend your lifespan and acquire fortune, as dharma texts have described. As human beings, you shouldn’t think all the time how to excel or become strong and beautiful. Nor should you consider whether your business would be successful, whether you sound nice when reciting sutras, whether your postures are correct when making prostrations to Buddhas, or whether you look like ordained practitioners. Learning and practicing the Buddha Dharma are for seeking enlightenment, liberation, or transferring others’ consciousnesses. You have heard too much of such teachings to the extent that your thoughts have been confined within them.

Some people are curious why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been able to manage a variety of business. Others, however, can only handle one kind of business. It seems that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can carry out all kinds of business. This is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche desires nothing in return so as to clearly differentiate worldly matters and deal with them skillfully with ease.

When you return home tonight, think of the following questions: What are human beings? What is life? Is it true that a life of having a good job, getting married, having children, owning a house, having money and then being dead can be called a human life? If so, what’s the difference between a human and an animal life? Animals also look for food, give birth to children, and teach their children how to find food. When their children know how to search for food, they leave their parents who eventually would die. Aren’t humans and animals the same? Thus, this kind of life is animal kind. The differences between human and animal life doesn’t lie in the lack of languages for animals. Nor does it lie in the appearances. For example, if monkeys are shaved, they’d look very similar to human beings. They only look a bit uglier than us. Some people like to go fishing. They think fish wouldn’t talk so they can kill and eat them. It’s not true that animals don’t know how to talk. It’s our inability to understand their talk. It’s like we can’t understand someone who speaks Hindi. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already achieved the level of understanding dogs’ language! Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once bestowed blessings to those who in coma or being in vegetarian state and knew that those people were still with thoughts. As soon as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave them blessings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would naturally know what they were thinking. After going home tonight, you should spend about half an hour to ponder upon the question: What is a human being?

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 105 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

June 27, 2010

Prior to the puja, an ordained disciple took the podium to make her public repentance. She was grateful for the opportunity granted by His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche so that she could repent to the Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. She prayed that the power of evil karma could stop to grow because of this repentance and that she could diligently follow the honorable Guru to learn the Buddha Dharma. It has been almost 20 years after she became a nun. Her life before taking refuge under Venerable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was wasted by wearing down her merits. Three or four years ago, as her merits were gradually used up, her health was deteriorating. She became very skinny and dark-looking. Two years ago when she took refuge under the Guru, her facial expression was clearly overshadowed. It’s much better now. Her face would become darkened only when she got angry, was involved in a fight, or became greedy, hatred, and ignorant. Sometimes, when her intestines were ill, indicating the karmic creditors in her belly got upset, her face would lose its shininess. She was ordained at the age of 31. Before that, her life was stumbled. She was young and optimistic by nature, believing in the law of cause and effect but not deep enough. Although she had led a moral yet easy-going life, she was often obscured by interpersonal relationship, thinking it’s not a big deal. Therefore, she had committed much evil karma. Later on, she’d find excuses to comfort herself. She’d think “it’s okay. The solution will present itself.” Though she would feel uneasy and anxious because of the evil karma, she didn’t know how to change her life so as to ignorantly live on.

When she was young, her father was a tax officer, collecting taxes from butchers. Those tax payers often gave them pork or offal, including livers, kidneys, hearts, intestines, spinal cords, and bone marrow. Her mother always cooked soup with pigs’ thighbones. She had eaten many dishes with these ingredients so her killing karma was very severe. Sometimes, she’d envision the painful looks of dead pigs and felt sympathetic. Nonetheless, when the food was prepared by her mother and ready to eat, she forgot about it and enjoyed the food very much. As she thinks about it now, it feels extremely terrible. Now she has some liver problems; her liver is easily inflamed. Her heart sometimes would beat irregularly, her blood fat was high and her intestines would feel pain. Her intestines was said to be swollen. Later on, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately arranged a doctor, also a dharma brother, to examine on her, but she wouldn’t like to undertake the colonoscopy and decided to leave it alone. She simply followed the teachings of His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, accepted her karmic retribution, and has been responsible for it. She gave a advice to those who has not taken refuge that you’d be very careful when eating meat.

She gasped in admiration at His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. With great wisdom, compassion and merits, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to help all disciples to adopt a vegetarian diet so as to get rid of many bitter karmic fruits and obstructions for learning Buddhism. Doing so also helps saving many sentient beings’ lives. This achievement can’t be obtained by various abbots of Exoteric Buddhist centers, including her master of Exoteric Buddhism. At most, these masters can adopt a vegetarian diet themselves but they are unable to persuade their followers to do the same. Moreover, these masters often told their followers that they can take their time to get used to a vegetarian diet, fearing that followers would not come if they fail. However, the primary reason of not being able to persuade their followers lies in the fact that these masters were not like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who is willing to use painstaking efforts and wisdom to benefit sentient beings. For instance, every Saturday when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche receives believers, Rinpoche uses his merits to let those who with kind roots to become vegetarians.

Once, a woman came to beseeched Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche because she had encountered a very serious problem and that forced her to adopt a vegetarian diet. Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche even bestowed Rinpoche’s blessing by saying “you got to continue!” She barely nodded. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further gave her a push, saying “you have to start now!” The woman appeared to be reluctant because she’d never taste meat any longer. This ordained disciple confessed that at the beginning of taking a vegetarian diet was hard for her, too. Yet, she also felt a bit funny. What it takes no more than stopping one’s craving for food and making up one’s mind. From this fact she realized that without the help of the Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, one can’t quit committing such a minor evildoing, not to mention achieving liberation. It’s indeed more than difficult!

After being ordained, she met some spiritual friends of Exoteric Buddhism and acquired deeper understanding of the meanings of the Buddha Dharma. She studied the Lamrim Chenmo. Moreover, she not only studied the preliminary practices to be a practitioner of small, medium and high capacity, but also studied Chandrakirti’s practices of tranquility and insight in Prasangika. And finally she had knowledge of entering the Middle Way and Middle Way. She was also familiar with Treatise on the Middle Way written by master Tsongkhapa. In other words, she actually only became an ordained scholar who believed that studying Buddhist texts was equivalent to practicing the Buddha Dharma. Because of her understanding of relative and absolute Bodhichitta, she thought that the achieving level of her mind could be improved and therefore she could reduce unnecessary minor afflictions. This also matched her optimistic nature and her characteristics of not minding details. Even if when she got angry, it would be gone very soon. She thought these Buddhist texts had enlightened her, which meant the void of nature. That is, there were nothing to attach to in the world.

Sometimes when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche severely reprimanded disciples, she knew that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche actually wasn’t really getting angry. Rather, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was using Rinpoche’s wisdom and suitable methods to teach disciples and help them to correct wrong conducts. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already achieved the level of Bodhisattvas, which can’t be understood by us.

In many Buddhist temples in Taiwan, many ordained masters actually don’t grasp the meanings of the Buddha Dharma. They have been preoccupied by taking care of followers and routines in the temples. There are many pujas they have to host, too. Leading such a busy life has caused them little time in their own practices. Some may be able to recite sutras or names of Buddhas to accumulate merits. They may also collect offerings and wish for a peaceful and safe life. As for the matter of being liberated from birth and death, they are incapable of accomplishing. Whether they would be reborn in the pure land, they actually are not sure. She was even worse. Although she understood the meaning of the void of nature, she has not actually practiced it. When the challenges appeared, she could simply be influenced by her karma. The habits of greediness, hatred, and ignorance, which have been gradually developed from past lifetimes till now, have controlled her behaviors. She was completely powerless to stop the force of evil karma. Nor could she integrate her reasoning and conducts. She often freely expressed her opinions about daily routines and gave advices to some masters for their flaws. However, as soon as she opened her mouth, arguments ensued. Thus, such conducts have resulted in some resentment. Even after taking refuge under His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her flaws have been continuously apparent. When she was unable to understand Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she has already generated various inappropriate thoughts. She was not happy with the rules of the dormitory and, thus, involved in many arguments with other dharma brothers who felt misunderstood. She now would like to make repentance and felt ashamed for her immaturity. Given her age, she should have behaved much better and should be so rude and unreasonable. She was grateful to Most Venerable Vajra Guru. Time and again, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been generous and granted her immense kindness. After repeatedly listening to the tape-recordings of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings on “the mind”, “making repentance,” and “cultivating compassion,” and reflecting upon her recurrent mistakes, she gradually understood the meanings of applying the Buddha Dharma to everyday life and of controlling one’s mind. It’s extremely difficult. When challenges manifested, she’d become unable to control her mind, immediately immersed in her own thoughts and judgments of right and wrong and then reactive at once. As a result, she had do harm to sentient beings and caused evil karma.

She has rarely considered the feeling of sentient begins. On top of this, her suspicion would cause misunderstanding of others. This was more than evil and had resulted in more serious mistakes. She, again, was grateful to the kindness of Most Venerable Vajra Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Once she went to the Jewellery Company to make repentance for what she did wrong before taking refuge. She felt extremely ashamed because those mistakes were very hard to mention. She couldn’t help crying before finished reading the note of listing her mistakes. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at once said “You can stop here! Okay! Don’t make the same mistakes in the future.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had saved her from being embarrassed. She really felt ashamed for those mistakes made before she was ordained.

One time she felt something wrong with her left eye, some lightening-like flashes occurring and becoming more frequently. And then she really sensed the lightening-like flashes and started to fear about it, thinking that there might be some nerve problems. For the first time, the seeking for help of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche emerged. Before she took refuge, she hardly implored good health and only wanted to seek refuge under a genuine guru to learn the Buddha Dharma. She was self-proclaimed to be above any worldly interests. However, the experience of feeling lighten-like flashes in her left eye had driven her to implore help of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. As soon as her thought emerged, she felt the magnetic power reaching her and the flashes disappeared at once. She felt recovered. That’s why she’d completely marvel at Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s supra-mundane power. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been revealing how to apply the Buddha Dharma to daily life, living a life of a Bodhisattva. Rinpoche has a business to manage and many disciples and employees to take care of. Every Saturday afternoons, Rinpoche has to receive many believers and solve their problems and suffering of birth, aging, illness and death. The depth of the compassion of the Guru can’t be fathomed by us ordinary people. For instance, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held a baby to bestow blessings, the glory emitting because of Rinpoche’s compassion has profoundly touched her. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is essentially the best among human beings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has bestowed blessings to sentient beings without asking anything in return and is able to achieve the level of Bodhisattvas. We disciples are so fortunate to have such a great guru to take care of us in many lifetimes to come till we obtain Buddhahood. The opportunity is extremely rare!

Then, the disciple who was mentioned by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in last puja made her epentance: She wrote a letter to the owner of a funeral home, asking the owner to give the letter to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed that the way she handled this matter was incorrect, indicating her disbelief in the Guru’s accomplishment. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted her a week to make repentance. She was thankful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for reminding her and even gave her one week to make introspection on what she did wrong. Her heart was not pure enough. And she did not examine, before doing any things, if she would break the precepts that a Buddhist disciples should keep. Like the event that she asked the owner of the funeral parlor to help her deliver the letter to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, it was because she had gotten angry at the Dharma brother who served for the Buddhist center. She successively committed the crime of the Five Poisons, namely greediness, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and delusion, in her body, speech, and mind.

On that day, May 16th, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche descend the Dharma throne, she self-righteously thought of the editorial in that day’s newspaper, and she also thought of that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had ever asked disciples to speak out their opinions. Therefore she impulsively adopted the way out of system to pass on the letter to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche through her friend outsides the Buddhist center. As the saying goes: “Domestic affairs should not be made public.” although it was reluctant love for her, she still committed oral karma for that dharma brother. Therefore, she should not have looked the thing by her life experience, and she also ignored the great ability Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has. By doing that, she showed great disrespect to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche!

Besides, she also did not have mercy and compassion. She did not keep it in mind that all faults are one own faults. If she had forgiven the dharma brother and given thoughts to the dharma brother with mercy and compassion, or even put the thing down, she would not have committed this big mistake. Last time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her: “Is being a rich man really amazing? Is it terrific for your son to enter a university?” The answer would be no! Without being trained well in his life habitual behaviors and life attitudes, his son is not extraordinary at all even if he enters the Harvard University or Yale University! All of the above are Buddha-Dharma and the wisdom that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often teaches disciples.

After one commits mistakes, one should know to make repentance and never commit again.

Now she recalled: she had also made many mistakes of being self-righteous and even hurting many people. She implored the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to forgive her after perception from the lack of introspection. If she had not been supervised by Guru, she would have had no idea how many mistakes she might make without perception.

During this week, she started with an upset mind on Monday and ended with a joyful mind today. She has immense gratitude to the Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for giving her a timely warning, which let her know how evil she had been! She beseeched Guru to receive her apology and repentance. To Vajra Guru the His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and all the sentient beings she has hurt: I’m sorry!

Later on, another disciple went up to share the happening in her traveling in Yunnan Kun-ming’s Cao-Xi temple during the period that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche refrained from ascending the Dharma Throne. The Cao-Xi temple is the place where Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche practiced and cultivated Buddhism as an ordained monk in one of the past lives. There, the disciple sought divine indication by drawing a note, in asking that when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will ascend the Dharma Throne and bestow Buddhist teachings again. As a result, she got a note which is best of the best, where it is written: “Taichi originally manifests the five Chis. Yin and Yang are integrated to plant the virtuous seed. Circle of life grows continually between the earth and the sky. Never fail to live up this note in a hundred.” with its annotation “The making and transforming is of no selfish thoughts. Beneficence to the world continuously grows. The great virtuous work should resurge. The ancestral merits are like the continuous fragrance”. This note was a very old one, and it indicated that it had not been drawn by people for very long time. It was a rare one, one of a hundredth. What is written on the note means that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the Yang (sun), and all the speeches and actions of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is correctitude. As for us disciples and sentient beings are Yin (moon). The integration of Yin and Yang refers to that if we could listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and attentively cultivate and practice them, this virtuous conditions will then be go on, Buddha-Dharma will be continuous. We must not fail to live up to the note’s meaning. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche transmits Buddha-Dharma without seeking for self-desire or self-profit. And the ancestral virtues and merits refer to that the lineage of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been transmitted from the founder of Drikung Kagyu without interruption. The continuous fragrance means that the precious Buddhism would be the unfailing supply to benefits sentient beings forever. This best-of-the-best note could not be drawn by an ordinary person, and it is the note of heaven. We ought to know the preciousness and rareness of Guru, and attentively act in accordance with Guru’s teachings.

Another disciple also added that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, wanting nothing in return, had donated two jeeps to Qinghai local government in 1998. And because of such selfless contribution from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, many temples of Drikung Kagyu lineage in Qinghai could attain better cares and protections from the local government. In addition, the tourist group of Sino Tour Company could also travel safely when visiting Qinghai. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not had any business in Qinghai, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s donation of the jeeps, costing him 1.5 million Renminbi dollars, was not for him himself, but for the Drikung Kagyu lineage, the disciple, and the tourists visiting Qinghai. Furthermore, during the time period when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stopped ascending the Dharma Throne to teach Buddha dharma, many people thought that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was angry. In fact Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not get angry; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind has already detached from it in a very comfortable state. In 2007, after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had conducted a perfect retreat in Mt. Lapchi, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang also confirmed that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had realized the enlightenment on void of nature and had attained the level of Spranbrala Yoga. A guru in such level will not be contaminated with the emotions (happiness, angriness, sadness, and joy) of the human world. We should not think that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got angry, so we wanted to do better because of our fear. We disciples wanted Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to begin ascending the Dharma Throne again so that we could learn and practice some more; but this wish all depended on our, the disciples’, minds. Whether the condition and connection can be connected or not depended on the disciples, and did not depend on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We disciples should think that how we could do the following things: paying homage to the guru, letting the guru happy, and concentrating on what the guru has said.

Today, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ascended the Dharma throne and explained teachings from Lord Jigten Sumgon, the lineage founder, and taught the attendees how to cultivate their practice diligently. If one fails to understand this concept, his Buddhist study will make him suffer. Why would you become more painful when you further your Buddhist study? Why would you get more pressure from learning Buddhism? Having sought refuge and learned Buddhism for many years, why haven’t you made any progress and failed to achieve any accomplishments? The reason lies in that you have not cultivated diligently. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestows the Buddhist teachings on the Dharma throne, your thoughts jump around, just like monkeys. In Six Paramitas, there are six practices of generosity, precepts, tolerance, diligence, meditative concentration and wisdom. Why would the practice of diligence be particularly included? To cultivate diligence is not what you think to conduct morning and evening study sessions, do prostrations to the Buddhas, or even recite sutras and mantras. It is to be in concentration. During the previous puja, you were reminded that, if you are able to refrain from committing evil deeds and to carry out virtuous ones in your body, speech, and mind, your mind would then be focused and capable of entering a state of meditative concentration as your essence of the precepts is pure and clean. Thereby, your wisdom shall be revealed. Without observing the precepts, you will naturally lose the ability to be concentrated. Without revealing your wisdom, how is it possible for you to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death? When you sought refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed precepts and enlightened you that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself had insisted observing the precepts after seeking refuge even when facing a temptation of wealth. We should continually concentrate our hearts of greed, hatred, and ignorance on learning Buddhism and practice. Contemplate our body, speech, and mind in our every single thought so as to see if we violate the Buddhist teachings bestowed by the guru. Carry out such an action every day without interruption. Consolidate the practice of the Buddhist teachings in our life and correct ourselves. Therefore, our lineage founder said that one’s learning in Buddhism should be conducted in a steady manner just as an elephant taking steps. You have seen elephants take their steady steps during walking. Even when elephants run, they run in steady steps as well. Thereby, one should conduct his Buddhist study in a similar manner.

The Buddhist precepts are to ask you to put your heart under control and to tie it up with precepts. When one’s heart gets distracted, he might easily commit evil deeds. If one has a pure and clean body of precepts, his body, speech, and mind would conduct virtuous deeds and thereby allow his heart to enter a state of concentration so as to cultivate his wisdom in practice. The Buddhist precepts are not tools to constraint you and are different from what other religions say about getting punishments from a deity or god for not observing the precepts. You should not violate your precepts simply because you want to see what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would do about it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would definitely do nothing. You are the one to undergo your evil karmic retribution, as the law of cause and effect is the existing law in the Universe. If you fail to understand this and think that the precepts are tools to control or punish you, you will then suffer more when you further your Buddhist study and even have more afflictions than those who do not learn Buddhism. To observe precepts is to limit you into a field where you won’t hurt sentient beings in body, speech, and mind, like the law and regulations in a country that protect its all people. It is to protect you and to stop you from committing more evil deeds so as to help you enter a state of concentration in the future, which shall excavate your wisdom in practice later on. As wisdom is inherent, one can never ask for it rather than explore it. Other religions also have the practice of concentration as well, but they do not cultivate their wisdom. For example, believers in other religions would do a retreat to recite their doctrines. However, all of these have nothing to do with practice. All they do is pray to their deities to talk to them at completion of their recitation. As to the Buddhist practice of concentration, it is conducted to reveal one’s wisdom, which will thereby enable one to gain liberation from the cycle of birth and death and to attain Buddhahood for the benefit the sentient beings.

Meditative concentration of Exoteric Buddhism is different from the concentration in Tantric Buddhism. Meditative concentration of Exoteric Buddhism is to fix one’s thought on one particular thing, such as a Buddha’s name. In the past, people in Chinese Exoteric Buddhism were asked to contemplate on utterances. For example, they may be asked to think about “who is reciting the Buddha’s name? who is the one reciting the Buddha’s name?”, by which they put the mind and thought and those utterances, such as “to see the mountain as a mountain, to see a mountain without regarding it as a mountain, and to see a mountain as it is still a mountain.” It is impossible for the sentient beings in this degenerate age to achieve their practice with such a method. Because your heart is very complicated, you are unable to really concentrate on a few utterances. Many people think it is the profound and advanced practice method, but in fact, it is very simple to speak Buddhism in this way in that it only needs to give you a sentence and ask you to contemplate on it, such as “why apples are apples?” However, this method is not appropriate for you. The more you contemplate on the utterances, the more self-defined notions would rise. These notions are mere life experiences of yours and are not helpful to your practice. Someone consulted His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche why she would get distracted while reciting the sutras. Some people say that one should close his eyes while sitting in meditation so as to be concentrated. Even one can just close his eyes, but what about the ears? Should you use earplugs then? Even if you plug the ears with earplugs, you would still hear a buzzing sound of static, for human bodies are electrically charged. When one stays in quiet room, he would hear that sound and the sound of his own blood circulation. Even if you are deaf, you will get sensations from your skin, be bitten by bugs, and feel the winds blow. Therefore, it is impossible to shut down all your sensory organs in order to be in concentration.

To enter into the state of true meditative concentration is to let your senses not affect your mind, rather than to cut off your senses. You have seen Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sitting in meditation with his eyes open without looking down. Even people or things appear in front of his eyes, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sees, but does not move his heart or gets affected because of being in a state of concentration. Tantras are the basis of such a practice and it is impossible for you to imitate. If you try to imitate, your eye balls might pop out and drop in the end. Without offering one’s body, speech, and mind to his guru, one can never learn to practice tantras. Even though you do not have the capacity, if you can offer your body, speech, and mind to your guru, it is still very helpful to your practice. If you merely recite the sutras or mantras by yourself, you can only accumulate a few merits for your future enjoyment in the upper realms.

When bestowing teachings on full prostrations, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once told everyone that they should conduct every prostration accurately and think of the benefit of the sentient beings. One should be concentrated during every prostration and to pay respect to the Buddhas on behalf of the sentient beings. However, have you done it? The attitude you have while doing full prostrations is like that of a primary pupil doing his homework or being punished with extra assignment after making some mistakes. You do not carry the task out in sincerity. Instead, you think that doing prostrations to the Buddhas would eliminate your karmic obstacles, bring you good health, and make your body slimmer or fuller. You are afraid to be scolded or asked to leave by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. All these distracting thoughts will not make your practice efficacious. Auspicious signs happened to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after his first and only Ngondro practice. Auspicious signs refer to the realization of one’s own faults and future direction in learning Buddhism. If one practices Ngondro and still scolds or gets angry with people, it means that he has not truly practiced or got repentance. Theoretically speaking, one should begin to know what mistakes he made when he has done more than 10,000 prostrations. However, many of you have conducted the practice many runs of one hundred thousand times of full prostrations and still do not understand what is wrong with yourselves. It is because you have failed to follow your guru’s instruction or to conduct the practice in concentration. You have not concentrated your mind and body, nor have you been diligent.

If one cannot understand the practice of diligence in his Buddhist study, he will become more painful and feel more pressure as he continues his learning. You have failed to be concentrated and have thought too much. You do not learn Buddhism to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death and merely want to seek protection and blessings. Your hearts are too complicated and fail to learn Buddhism in a simple manner. If you really do this for the sentient beings, you yourself should attain liberation first before benefiting the sentient beings. However, the more you learn, the more selfish you become. If you really had the heart for the sentient beings, you would not feel stressed today. One has to be concentrated not only in his Buddhist study, but also in his daily life. Why would people develop mental diseases or depression? Apart from being influenced by the karmic forces from their previous lifetimes, what is most important of all is that they think too much and are unable to be concentrated. Many of you think a lot and worry about the consequences before actually carrying out a task, just like a person who begins to think that water would flow into his stomach, then his intestines, and get excreted as urine after a certain period of time even before he drinks the water. In this way, he would not drink the water properly and would spill the water around. Why would some people be careless in conducting tasks? It is because they are not concentrated. For example, someone who drives and talks or listens to the music at the same time is not concentrated. Of course it would be dangerous. Some people think that driving accidents happen because the drivers have driven too fast. Actually, it is the fact they are not concentrated that have caused the accidents.

The most import to concentrate is to concentrate on the guru’s words. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche earnestly bestows Buddhist enlightenment to you every week, but you just sit in the lower seats without concentration, like wandering ghosts and fail to take in what you have heard. You just think that you would be blessed and protected as long as you attend puja every week, which is advised by Guru, and do the Buddhist sessions every day. People who learn Buddhism with this kind of mindset will not act in accordance with teachings. They would feel pressure from it. And they even have no idea where they do wrong and how to repent. You fail to be concentrated because you do not have reverence. You treat your guru as a cheap Buddhist laborer and take everything for granted. You should believe and carry out what the guru has said and taught without having your own thoughts, making alterations to the teachings in your actions, or being self-opinionated.

The lineage founder, Jigten Sumgon, said that you should concentrate on your breathing and your inner body and have correct insight into the Buddhist teachings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not transmitted practice means about breathing yet, and such a practice refers to adopting breath counting to help those who are not able to concentrate. One’s insight into the Buddhist teachings refers to a correct understanding as well as a level of enlightenment, which has been fully expounded by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. One’s practice in his Buddhist study is to benefit the sentient beings so as to gain liberation from reincarnation. To concentrate on one’s inner body is to contemplate what a human being is. One who is unable to concentrate would rise and fall with worldly affairs and have unceasing afflictions. One ought to make concentration for a while before one start to do a thing. As stated in the Buddhist sutras, something approved by many people is not necessarily correct. On the other hand, something reproached by many is not necessarily wrong, either. One should calm himself down and see the cause and effect of such a matter. Human experiences are habitual patterns of human beings and are related to local customs and cultures. For example, a few years ago, a custom in which a wife has to be buried along her deceased husband was still practiced in the countryside of India. They regard such a practice as a normal one whereas we find it difficult to accept. Human experiences are all for self-benefits: getting married, finding a job, saving money for a house, or making preparation for one’s final years. How is that different from an animal’s life? Animals such as rodents and foxes also store food for winter. Human bodies are relatively vulnerable, compared to those of animals, and are unable to digest and decompose the animals’ excretion and fertilize the earth, compared to the insects.

As long as you change his mindset of self-profit to sentient beings’ benefit for Buddhist cultivation, you will have a different way to view things. You would be naturally concentrated and see things clearly. During the Chod puja held on Friday, you were asked to contemplate what a human being was already. What’s the difference between human and animals? In human life, one is not supposed to only get married, have children, and begin a undertaking. For the aforementioned, animals do them as well. Not only human beings are able to think, but also animals do. Animals think about how to live in comfortableness or how to look for food. You can take a look at how animals trap and arrange to hunt food. The difference between human and animals lies in that human are able to control their heart, observe precepts, diligently cultivate Buddhism, and benefit sentient beings. Oftentimes, when something happens to us, our minds would be constantly clouded with previous life experiences. Therefore, we would employ such accumulated experiences in making judgement or decisions. Nonetheless, we should know that our previous life experiences were accumulated in order for us to survive. If we fail to focus on the on-going matter due to those life experiences, we will be unable to see the whole picture as it is. If we can be concentrated, would we be inattentive, ignorant, or careless?

From the modern scientific perspective, the basic building block of substance is an atom, which splits to form another atom. While these two atoms are identical, do they have a parent-child relationship? Can you say that the latter atom is the former’s offspring? Are they totally different? Just like the primitive substance of a human body is a sperm from the father and an ovum form the mother. After the cell has been divided many times, it can become a child or a dog. Why would a single cell end up becoming different species after division? The scientists have not found the answer yet and can only explain it as a physical phenomenon with the idea of genes. As to the Buddhist teachings, which see the matter in the light of cause and effect, one’s body is the current result of his causes created in his previous lifetimes. What one is doing is a cause for his future. Everything in the universe is about cause and effect. As one has the karmic connection to enter the womb of his mother, his form, from a scientific perspective, is a result of the combination of a sperm and an ovum and cell division. Nevertheless, from the Buddhist perspective, it is the karmic forces that enabled such a form to come to exist. What scientists call genes is actually karma.

Causes are created by oneself in the past. Nonetheless, there are still helpful connections between the cause and its effect. When the fruit has not ripened, one can learn Buddhism and practice with his human body by means of helpful connections so as to change the taste of the fruit and make it less bitter. Someone got sick and became unable to work. His family thereby got agitated and worried. Do not think that cancer is the fruit, it is just the blossom. The real fruit is to fall into the hell. Before growing its fruit, a seed would first become a blossom. However, a blossom does not necessarily become a fruit. Therefore, when a blossom appears, we should do our best to change the flavor of the fruit, to make it shrink, or even to prevent it from growing. We know that everything is about cause and effect. Genes can change and, even one has cancer genes, they do not necessarily take effect. As one’s current karmic retribution is a result from the causes he created in the past. One’s future karmic retribution is being created right now, for one can change his future with his actions in the present. If you do not learn Buddhism and practice with your human body in this life, your body would be like a mass of useless bones and flesh. Those who do not learn Buddhism follow the trends and live their lives like a walking corpse.

The meaning of life is not that a person can have a longer lifespan in this world. A person eventually has to face death. What do we learn in our Buddhist study? We are actually learning about the moment of death, how to face death, and how to die with dignity. A Buddhist learner always prepares to die. Many people are afraid of death, but, in fact, we are dying as each second passes by. Life and death are the phenomena existed at the same time. The moment when we begin to be an embryo is the moment when we begin to walk towards death. The dharmas of birth and extermination exist at the same time; this is also the void of nature. This is like when we light a lamp; at the same time when we light the lamp, the lamp’s life thereby starts to diminish, for it will eventually be off someday. Even if it is an electric light, once we turn on the switch, we will always turn it off; even if the light has not been turned off, the electric light will become bad eventually. Birth is death. So we should not pray to live longer for this body. Even if the body dies, we just transform to another form in the six realms by following the influences of our karma. Karma is a kind of force which makes us reincarnate. The appearance of karmic hindrance is not an excuse for us to do wrong things. Eliminating karma does not mean to let our karma disappear. It means to eliminate our obstacles of practicing Buddha dharma and not to let the strength of karma to hinder our practices. Amitabha Sutra has stated that only those who have great virtues can go to Amitabha Buddha’s pure land; it is for those who have great virtues, not small virtues. One can be reborn in the pure land by carrying karma, but only virtuous karma. Those who have the slightest evil karma cannot go to the pure land. As to how to enable oneself to gain liberation from reincarnation, one has to understand the interdependent origination of the sentient beings. The sentient beings have fallen into reincarnation because they generated greed, hatred, and ignorance. Therefore, when greed, hatred, and ignorance are eradicated, the complete interdependent origination would be eradicated, too. So would the causes for reincarnation.

When saying words that hurt other people, some of you still find excuses and say that you do not mean to do so and it is just done by your instinct mentioned in science. There is no place for the concept of instinct in Buddha dharma. If you did not have a strong idea to do such thing regularly, you would not be able to say or do it without thinking. If you had paid attention to watch the section of the TV news of welcoming His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche in Taoyuan Airport, you would discover that in the airport when a bodyguard’s hand moved near His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche’s head, the bodyguard’s hand was blocked immediately by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In this short instance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s action was a response completely without thinking. Being able to have such swift response was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mind always thought about protecting His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche at any time.

Some new disciples came to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for transmitting dharma. However, their mentality of imploring for the dharma was not correct; they did not have a reverent mind and an earnest mind of wanting to be liberated from the cycles of rebirth and death. They thought that they had taken refuge and the guru must transmit dharmas to them. They also thought that it was unfair since the dharmas had been transmitted to the old disciples; so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche should also transmit the dharmas to them. Your minds are changing all the time, why can Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche change his methods? Even if the dharmas were transmitted, if they did not practice the dharmas diligently, it would have been no effect. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has seen many disciples, who sought refuge long time ago, still make a lot of mistakes even with the practice transmitted to them. On the contrary, even if the Buddha dharmas have not been transmitted, if the disciples can follow the guru’s teachings to cultivate diligently, he will be practicing Buddha dharma the same as the others. There are many achievers in history who dedicated their lives only to practice a mantra or a Buddha’s name. They could still attain accomplishments, so it is not important how many dharmas, whether many or few, have been transmitted to you. When being interviewed on the television, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang also said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will do whatever the guru has mentioned.

Yesterday, there was a believer of other religion who sought an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He was very proud of himself for being a vegetarian for many years and having a child who has eaten vegetarian food since being in the womb. In fact, being a vegetarian is not something you can brag about; cows and sheep are all vegetarians. For those who believe in non-Buddhist religion and are long term vegetarians, why the more they eat, and the darker do their face become? This is because they still eat eggs; they eat vegetarian food for their own benefits and better health, not for not harming other sentient beings; they do not have compassion. The faces of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are bright, because both of them eat vegetarian food for not harming sentient beings; they want to stop the killing; eating vegetarian food is the beginning of stopping evil and cultivation of one’s compassion and mercy. Do not think that practice is eating vegetarian food, reciting Buddha’s name, or doing repentance prostrations. Some monks and nuns think that they have become a monk for several decades, been a vegetarian for a long time, recited Buddha’s name every day, and done a lot of repentance prostrations; but why do they still get sick? Others think that they are sick because they are carrying other sentient beings’ karma; and they furtively go to see doctors. Some people, with several barrels of fish, followed some master to release fishes by the sea; they sprayed waters and recited mantras at the beach, thinking that this is releasing lives. Actually, it is releasing lives as long as you eat vegetarian food, do not kill, and do not eat meat.

After World War II, because of the industrial revolution, western countries strongly supported animal husbandry and logging rain forest such that the environment was damaged. Western country’s short vision of reaping short-term profits has led to today’s serious effects on the ecological environment. Now Australia is the place in the world which has the most patients of colorectal cancer. Australia has suffered droughts and its land is barren. It is clearly a place surrounded by the sea, but it has little rain. This is because Australians love to eat meat, live lazily, seek enjoyment, and like to drink alcohol. The land where lazy people live will not be fertile. Buddhist scriptures have stated that at last the Earth will be destroyed because of desertification. There will be two suns in the sky. The weather will be hotter and hotter and become intolerable. Buddha dharma will be destroyed and plants will die. Before the destruction of the Earth, there will be a practitioner who performs meditative concentration very well will take those practitioners who will practice meditative concentration together to other planets.

The concept of “middle way” has been mentioned many times in the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra) and the Maharatnakuta Sutra. The concept of “middle way” was introduced by Nagarjuna Bodhisattva and is an important dharma for practicing a bodhisattva’s path. “Middle way” does not mean that one stands in the middle and sees both left and right; it does not mean there is no emptiness or no existence. “Middle way” is indescribable by the rule of worldly experience and is the status before the change of worldly matters and is in the realm of void of nature. In the past, there was an elder Buddhist monk who had explained a lot about the concept of “middle way”; but, no matter how he explained, he still could not speak the true meaning of “middle way”, because he himself had not attained the enlightenment of void of nature. When receiving Mahamudra from His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had consulted His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, “Whether or not to learn the dharma of middle way?” His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang said it was not necessary. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could still attain accomplishments without learning the dharma of middle way. Of course, this is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has the virtuous and great capacity, causes and conditions accumulated from past generations of lives and the absolute reverences to the Drikung Kagyu lineage and the guru. You cannot attain achievements on the dharma of middle way, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still mentioning this to give you some insight. Currently, in Taiwan’s society, Lamrim Chenmo is widely promoted. However, actually, Buddha dharma should not be treated as knowledge for learning or absorbing. Buddha dharma is used to give you the ability to change and correct yourself. One who has read so much Buddha dharma without changing himself still cannot benefit sentient beings.

There are two types of wisdoms. One is the inherent fundamental wisdom in each person; this will not change. The other is the acquired wisdom that is generated by practicing Buddha dharma for benefiting sentient beings. The acquired wisdom can let one himself and other sentient beings be liberated from the cycles of rebirth and death. After attaining the acquired wisdom, one can then develop his fundamental wisdom which is in the state of attaining the enlightenment of void of nature with combined Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya.

On Saturday, because of disobedience of her son who is currently a junior high school student, a mother took her son to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. This son was very articulate. After kneeling down in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he immediately said that he let his mother be unhappy because of smoking so he came in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to repent voluntarily; he said that he would not smoke again in the future. If it were you who faced this son that day, you would certainly have soft-heartedly agreed with the son. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, with the ability to know the cause and effect of the problem, knew that this child had joined a gang; however, this child did not admit this fact. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked him which school he had studied and followed the answer to say that if he had studied in that school, he was either in a gang of A group or a gang of B group. Once heard that, the child immediately said that he was not in gang A, implying that he was in gang B. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche used such a method to let this junior high school student speak out his connection with a gang and then gave him enlightenments and helps by aiming at his problems. If you did not understand the condition of the society, you would not be able to help him. Who would have thought that as a Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could even know the matters about gangs? Had Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not attained wisdom, how could Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche know sentient beings’ causes and conditions to help them?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to teach the enlightenment of Milarepa, the guru of Gampopa, about our illness. There are two kinds of armors to protect those who learn Buddhism: external and internal armors. Today we’ll not talk about external armor and will explain the internal armor first. One of the internal wise armor is not abandoning one’s illness. The meaning of not abandoning can be explained in threefold: as an illness arises, the origination and development of an illness, transforming an illness to the use of walking on the Buddhist path. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took Rinpoche’s skin cancer as an example to explain the mindset when knowing the illness.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was informed the illness by a physician disciple that it was a very dangerous melanoma skin cancer. A surgery to remove the cancer was suggested and there might be two years left at most for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Upon hearing the news, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche actually felt happy because finally there was something could poison Rinpoche to death. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also knew that this illness was a karmic retribution due to Rinpoche’s consuming meat. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche prayed to the dharma protector the following: if the illness could do me good, let me be ill; if remaining health could do me good, let me be healthy; if death could do me good, let me die. Why did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche pray in such ways? If being ill could do Rinpoche good, it means the illness can clear up the karmic debts Rinpoche had accumulated by harming sentient beings in past lifetimes. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche prayed to let Rinpoche be ill. If death can do Rinpoche good, it means there is no meaning and value to live on in the world. If death can avoid the karmic retribution to fall in hells, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, thus, prayed to die. If remaining health can help Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to benefit more sentient begins, Rinpoche prayed to be healthy. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche didn’t go to see doctors. Nor did Rinpoche undergo surgeries and chemotherapy. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche joyfully accepted the results of being ill. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche simply wanted to know how much time left for him to learn the Buddha Dharma and to benefit sentient beings. This life of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is to sacrifice and devoted to propagating the Buddha Dharma.

Whether or not an illness can be cured depends on one’s merits. If one’s merits are not sufficient enough, a doctor might operate on the wrong foot. If one has accumulated enough merits, a lousy doctor can heal his illness and even wrong prescription can cure. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche finished a prescription of Chinese medicine, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s doctor of Chinese medicine would have kept asking Rinpoche if Rinpoche needs another round of diagnosing on the pulses and if the medicine needs to be adjusted. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always replied that Rinpoche can just have the same medicine. It has been several months that the doctor hasn’t diagnosed on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s pulses. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows that the workload has been exceeding Rinpoche’s limit. That’s why the physical body needs help from Chinese medicine. But as long as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wholeheartedly accepted the help of the Chinese medicine, it would work no matter what. This is also relevant to the merits. Five years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche felt ill of Rinpoche’s kneels. Most people had eaten soup made of animals’ thighbones so their bones would become unhealthy. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had take some supplements to protect bones for half a year and then stopped. Now the problems in kneels are all right. This phenomenon is related to complex factors. Simply speaking, it’s due to the fact that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been benefiting sentient beings. Such kind deeds have changed the organism of the cells that would automatically be repaired and recovered. This, however, is not to advocate that you quit seeing doctors and taking medicine. When you catch colds or have problems in your stomach and intestines, you should see doctors. Otherwise, people would think you are superstitious.

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s body is with S-shaped Scoliosis and displacement of the cervical spine in the neck. There was ever a doctor advised Rinpoche to wear the Metal Bracing for Scoliosis and lying in the bed for whole life. Furthermore, the severe scoliosis could cause incontinence of urine and feces, unable to raise one’s hands and legs, with head bowed, bump or rib hump on one side of the spine, bending forward at the waist, and paraplegia (unable to move or feel legs). A disciple, who is a doctor, persuaded Rinpoche to have a surgery and brought him to have the Spine Align Chiropractic. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only went there once and did not go there anymore. Because Rinpoche realized that it was the evil karma accumulated by the previous lives: There was a general to attack a castle in his previous life. Upon entering the castle, he slashed everybody he saw. A civilian woman was slashed across her waist. Therefore it caused that the karmic retribution is to have a body with S-shaped Scoliosis. General speaking, it is hard to have the Scoliosis because Rinpoche has learned the martial art which have a correct posture that looks like riding a horse since he was a child. When trying the clothing, the clerk also praised that Rinpoche was standing straight. Even there was a Chod puja on Friday and Rinpoche enlightened believers on the dharma seat with legs crossed at the afternoon from 5PM to 9PM on Saturday, Rinpoche can leave the dharma seat and move rapidly as normal, only a little bit aching in his neck causing of tired. Rinpoche accepts the karmic retribution by causing the evil karma, if Rinpoche could not pay his debt by those diseases, he will be rebirth to repay for it by the next life. Therefore Rinpoche was joyful to accept those severe diseases.

Rinpoche ever helped a believer who is a pre-disciple, but he thought Rinpoche was not extraordinary because Rinpoche is only a lay practitioners. He also has a Scoliosis and could not move right away after seating for a long time. Once he attended the Grand Puja which was presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Since that time he was admired and complete submission to Rinpoche after seeing Rinchen sitting on the dharma seat with legs crossed for more than 6 hours, but he could walk rapidly when leaving the dharma seat.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was transferring the suffering from the diseases to benefit the sentient beings, because of the skin cancer and S-shaped Scoliosis. So when those believers have the cancer would like to ask for the opinion of the surgery or chemotherapy, Rinpoche can have the same feeling with them, and enlighten those believers to give the example of himself in order to learn the dharma as well. There are medical researches into the cancer treatment. When you do nothing on the cancer, the cancer cells may staying a place for a long time, but it would be transferred to other places when there is surgery or chemotherapy, On the surface, the cancer may disappear for 5 or 6 years. However, it would still eventually recur and spread. Originally the meat you ever ate may stay in your body, however if you try to dispose it, it may move anywhere to invade your body. If you don’t care about it, then the cancer may coexist with you. Even if your life can last more than 20 years, the cancer will, too. And then the cancer will just die with you.

There is a chance to have the bone spurs when a body with S-shaped Scoliosis. The bone spurs will put pressure on nerves, causing incontinence of urine and feces, and paraplegia. There are a lot of people to have the surgery treatment when they have the bone spurs. A disciple, who is a surgical doctor, advised the possibility of risk to have the surgery with the bone spurs. When getting rid of the bone spurs by the surgery, the best condition will not be proliferated anymore for the temporary several years. But it needs to have the surgery again for the problem of bone spurs proliferation. There may be a risk to stab the artery causing massive bleeding. And anaphylactic shock was caused due to fill in the bone with bone cement. Those are the risks and suffering which ever happened before. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that the root cause of bone spurs was due to the kill karma. No matter you ever killed them by yourself or not. The Chinese people ever have the bone soup. As long as you had bitten bones and ate bone marrow, your bones would naturally have some problems. This is the causes you had planted and then harvested the karmic fruits.

A disciple has been breaking precepts and not willing to follow the teachings of the Buddha Dharma. Last week, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted the opportunity for disciples to make public repentance, this disciple was hiding behind and wouldn’t like to publicly make repentance. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the chair of the center to collect this disciple’s red vest, meaning that he is no longer a disciple and can only be a believer. It’s not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not compassionate enough to help a sentient being like him who is not willing to make repentance. It’s that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can only wait till his passing and his realization of suffering. That is when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can help. Last Friday evening when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the Chod rituals, here came a female ghost who was miserably crying and regretful for her mistakes. Take another example. The general manager’s wife of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s corporation in India’s branch had liver disease and a doctor diagnosed her as having liver cancer. At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her that it was not a cancer. Instead, the illness was caused by the poor quality of drinking water. In India, a great many of water pipes are made of iron or lead and are not well maintained. Therefore, the rust or lead from the pipes would be released into the running water. That’s how she got the liver disease. However, the wife chose not to believe what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s words and decided to undergo chemotherapy. When she passed away, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed Phowa rituals for her. Her consciousness came to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and was regretful that she didn’t listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Don’t think that these stories were made up by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to scare you. Since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a practitioner who strictly observes the precepts, if these words were not actually said by them, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wouldn’t ever tell you.

Why didn’t people realize their mistakes when they were alive, but they did when passing away? According to Buddhist sutras, there are 51 mental conditions in human beings, including greediness, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and suspicion. When alive, people’s pure and clean mind would be obscured by the effects of 51 mental conditions. They don’t know their faults. After death, the effects of 51 mental conditions would come to a halt. The nature wouldn’t be overshadowed by the five poisons and reveal its pureness and clearness. It’s not until then people begin to realize their suffering and faults. They also can make genuine repentance and understand the greatness of the Buddha Dharma. In fact, according to the Buddha Dharma, we don’t have to cultivate the mind which should be originally pure and clean. It’s our complicated thoughts that cover the mind. That’s why we need to cultivate our minds so as to get rid of those complicated matters and reveal the nature of our minds.

All the expressions of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, including joking, smiling, being angry, and scolding, are the Buddhist teachings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been applying various kinds and appropriate methods to benefit sentient beings, even with emotional-like methods such as joyfulness, anger, sadness, and happiness to teach sentient beings. You might think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was angry with you, which was not correct because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not get angry at all. As a practitioner having achieved the siddhi of Spranbrala Yoga, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wouldn’t be influenced by worldly emotions. The people Richen Dorjee Rinpoche sees are all Yidam deities. The sounds Rinpoche hears are mantras of Yidam deities. It’s not like you. What you see are enemies and what you hear are slanders. The reason you think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got angry is that you are afraid of being reprimanded. If one truly believes in the law of cause and effect, how come he’d make any mistakes? How come he’d be reprimanded? The seemingly various appearances of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche are for the purpose of transferring and teaching a variety of sentient beings. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has exhausted all methods, Rinpoche will ask you to leave. The last resort to help you would be the one after you die.

The skin cancer cells of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have been scabbed since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to learn Buddhism and benefit sentient beings. It was not until 2007 when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to perform retreat at Lapchi where Jetsun Milarepa once performed retreats, too, that the scab automatically fell off from Rinpoche’s skin. At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went to perform the retreat with the mindset to encounter Rinpoche’s death. Because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s profound vow to benefit sentient beings and the compassionate Bodhichitta that the illness wanted to help, the illness automatically disappeared.

Some people think that if their family member is diagnosed with cancer, they’d better not inform him to avoid his sorrowful feeling. This is incorrect. A patient must be distinctly aware of his own physical conditions. If you don’t tell him and wait until the last moments of his passing, he must blame you for not telling him sooner. He’d reason that if he knows earlier, he can take some medicine, see different doctors, do other things and so on. Patients would begin to complain about this and that. For instance, when one catches a cold, he’d blame for others transmitting the disease to him. Actually, if one has sufficient merits, he wouldn’t be infected. When you are sick, it’s because your immune system becomes weak, not able to fight off virus. Most people won’t consider their illness from this point of view. They fail to take into account the law of cause and effect and simply blame for others’ wrongdoings. Metaphorically speaking, all people’s last name has changed to “accusing” and the first name “blaming.” As soon as there emerges a problem, people would accuse and blame others.

One who learns Buddhism must embrace death. Rinpoche mentioned a disciple who ran away from the Buddhist center when he first heard such a statement. Many people would have utmost sorrows upon the moment when they are diagnosed with cancer; they consider death is not far away; they cry at home gathering. Therefore, their family becomes full of sorrows to the extent that they have no appetite for food. Some people would think of nothing but sadness when they have illness; saying that the family elders and the youth need be taken care, they think they can’t die yet. Rinpoche questioned: is such thinking similar to a thief? When a thief is caught, the thief would ask for mercy. So, what is the real intention? Indeed, it is a denial of repentance and repaying debts. What is our own body? In fact, the body is all junk. While we are alive, we eat, sleep, and work in daily life; is that any different from animals? Some day in the end of this life, the body would corrupt and become totally useless. In contrast, if the all-junk body can be used to repay one’s karmic debts accumulated through the lifetimes, it would be great. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took himself as an example; Rinpoche does not ever disclose his own illness, including the spinal side-bending and skin cancer, to his mother because Rinpoche would not like to cause his mother any worries. Looking at the Rinpoche, one could not observe any ill complexion at all. Regardless that if one is a Buddhist or not, if one has cancer or not, one will pass away eventually. Do you think it would be fine if people could live for hundreds of years? Why are you afraid of death? Because there exists certain memory of death in you, you have the notion of painfulness and sorrows about death. If it would not have been experienced sufferings of illness, you would not learn Buddhism. Therefore, the suffering is also a helpful karmic condition through which we aspire after free from sufferings.

At first when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that he contracted skin cancer, Rinpoche felt joyful and hoped that if the cancer grew into a larger one, or proliferate to other parts of his body. It turns out the illness has been recovered other than the other peoples’. In modern western medicine, it is also claimed that one whose mood is positive and steady could recover quicker. From Chinese medicine perspective, its treatment philosophy is to guide the malicious energy or poison substances to drain out from the body; it differs from the western medicine that would otherwise destroy the malicious cells inside the body. Some cells are so small that they cannot be seen even with the help of a microscope. Cancer cells are very small. As long as a single cancer cell is left without being surgically removed, the cancer will recur. Nowadays, doctors in US have shown, via clinical observation, that chemotherapy, electrotherapy and surgery will not eradicate the illness at all. The truth is karmic retribution cannot be avoided; therefore, one should let it manifest. With such mind set, one may obtain happiness. When you think about the course of the disease, the place it came from, the place it resides, and the place it would go afterwards, you will realize that the disease never exists. Everything is nothing but cause and condition. It is only a process. It will end when it passes.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has a notion that the karmic creditors might not be able to find the Rinpoche in the future. Therefore, Rinpoche would like to repay all the karmic debts in this lifetime. The human body is obtained through the cycle of karmic retribution of bad deeds and good deeds. People in this lifetime will experience the processes of revenging, repaying, or requiting with karmic credits and debts. One will eventually pass away when one’s karmic interplay is all resolved. In perspective of emptiness, there is not illness indeed. Rinpoche has sat on the Dharma throne for a couple of hours consecutively, do you think there would be any pain or any uncomfortable or not? It does have, in fact. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not have any distraction by the pain caused from his physical body.

To learn Buddhism is for one to lift the suffering on the verge of his death. No instant results can be gained and it takes time to practice and learn. You have been given this opportunity to learn Buddhism. Why don’t you generate Bodhichitta, mercy and compassion and abide by the teachings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas so as to truly correct yourself? Without doing so, how could you possibly eliminate the suffering at the end of your current life, gain liberation from the cycle of birth and death, and help other sentient beings?

Facing with illness, one should not adhere that the illness must be recovered. One has to abandon the notion of sufferings and joy; no more complaints; no more hatred; no more worries. One should not only think about how to recover, or think about how to cure the disease and, as a result, one will have no time to learn Buddhism. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother takes different kinds of dosage in a day. She has paid too much attention on taking them and thus is unable to learn Buddhism. If one accepts the suffering of illness, happiness will follow. For example, Rinpoche could drive very securely in the city. As illustrated by a disciple, Rinpoche’s driving skill is reaching the acme of perfection: steady, agile and non-annoyingly smooth. It’s also an example that Rinpoche has not distracted by the illness of his physical body. Many elder people would break bones in case that they fall down. In contrast, Rinpoche’s mother who is over eighty fell down a couple of times, but she does not break her bones. The reason would be due to the merits and virtues accumulated by her son, the Rinpoche, through his devotion in benefiting the beings. In this world we live, man is inevitable to experience sufferings in the cycle of birth, old, sickness and death. There are 440 different kinds of sickness. Although one may be free from suffering of sickness; one could not avoid the suffering of getting old. Eventually, eyes will have unclear vision; ears cannot hear clearly; body movement becomes slow, and so forth. Furthermore, the youth would like to hear heavy tempo and dynamic melody, but the elder simply cannot accept it. Songs that the elder likes would be hated by the youth. One day when you have become aged, you will not like the music which the youth enjoys.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche assures everyone that not only it can be achieved by the Rinpoche, but also everyone can achieve it. If not, the reason is you have not made up your mind. Time flies. Before the grand puja held on June 6th, all of you were busy with the preparation stuff; today, you feel like there is nothing ahead of your way. Now, it is reaching the end of June; the first half year will be passing. Therefore, do seize time; watch for your own body, speech and mind; never allow yourself any chance to have bad deeds.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche put an emphasis that he has not ever read the text elaborated before giving today’s lecture. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has achieved such level of practices. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche believes that he has certain karmic connection with Jetsun Milarepa, so he could accomplish the practices before knowing the teachings.

June 30, 2010

His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, the venerable lord, finished his trip to Taiwan during his World Dharma Tour 2010 and departed from Taiwan by air. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally accompanied and escorted His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche to the airport and went all the way into the departure lounge. At the Taiwan Taoyuan Airport, many Rinpoches, lamas, and believers of Drikung Kagyu Lineage in Taiwan waited reverently to see His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche off. What’s more, an orderly procession by 400 disciples from the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center had come early to wait for His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Following the strict instruction of their Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, 400 disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center stood in the well-ordered procession, which was eye-catching but aroused little inconvenience of the passers-by. When His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, escorted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, arrived at the departure hall of the airport, the Rinpoches, lamas, and believers all came up to pay their respect to the venerable lord, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. The disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center waved flags of the Lineage and the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, gratefully greeting His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and the accompanying Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The waiting reporters from various Taiwanese press media took photos at this warm moment. Right in front of the red banner for the departure of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, held by the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, a brief interview with His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche was conducted.

His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche’s most important scheduled task during his stay in Taiwan was to preside over The Grand 793rd Anniversary Memorial Puja of Drikung Kagyu Lord Jigten Sumgön at the Taipei Arena on June 6th. This puja, coordinated by Glorious Jewel Buddhism Culture Exchange Association, was attended by 14,000 people. Because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche exercised circumspection while making arrangements for the puja and, in particular, because the venerable lord, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, and all the previous gurus of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage had bestowed blessings, the puja completed in utter solemnity and perfection. There was noticeable coverage by major Taiwanese press media about the puja.
