Event Calendar of The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche

May 2, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche invited His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche to bestow upon believers and disciples the enlightenment on very important Buddha Dharma for at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

The puja started with a mandala offering. Khenpo Namdol, who was one behalf of all and led all ordained nuns and the Chairman of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, made the mandala offering to His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then gave enlightenment as followed: Due to our great merits, it is our pleasure to invite His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche to be here. Garchen Rinpoche is a very important Rinpoche among the Order. In his previous lifetime, His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche had been the regent of the Order during absence of throne holders. A regent would be responsible for managing the Order and instructing Buddha Dharma so as to maintain the Order’s tradition. Although Garchen Rinpoche is already in his seventies, he has been traveling all over the world to teach Buddha Dharma. Additionally, Garchen Rinpoche has been through much sorrows but his firm faith in Buddha Dharma and the Order hasn’t been changed. This kind of attitude should be cultivated in us. You must have accumulated great merits to obtain such a precious opportunity to listen to the teachings of Garchen Rinpoche. It’ll be of great help for your future learning of Buddha Dharma. Let’s welcome Garchen Rinpoche with warmest claps.

Garchen Rinpoche first thanked for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s invitation. Garchen Rinpoche also instructed that every attendee here was with great merits to obtain a rare opportunity to follow the authentic practitioner, the Guru, to learn Buddha Dharma in such an extraordinary Buddhist center. Before teaching precious Buddha Dharma, Garchen Rinpoche bestowed his best wishes upon all attendees in Tibetan language “zha-xi-de-le.” His teachings were subsequently translated in Mandarin as following:

It is extremely rare for sentient beings to be reborn as human beings. Obtaining this uncommon human body is very precious and uneasy. We should feel joyful to acquire such a rare human body with eighteen kinds of perfection. It’s also very rare to be reborn in an era with Buddha Dharma. In addition to obtaining a rare human body and being reborn in a time period with Buddhism, it’s extremely uncommon to follow an authentic guru to learn Buddha Dharma. We should cherish such merits accumulated in past lifetimes and diligently learn Buddha Dharma during this lifetime.

In the world the state of pureness and state of impureness exist. The state of pureness refers to that of nirvana the Buddha has entered. And the state of impureness means that of being reincarnated in the six realms. Actually each of us possesses the pure nature devoid of filth which is same as the Buddha’s, without difference. The same mind nature, namely Buddha nature, or called the womb of the tathāgatagarbha, are possessed by all of us. The differences between the sentient beings and the Buddha lie in that ignorance arising in the beings and the beings have self-attachment, thereby they fall into the suffering of cyclic reincarnation.

With one foundation, two paths, and three fruits, Garchen Rinpoche bestowed the enlightenments on the auspicious true realm of Buddhism: one foundation refers to that the essence of sentient beings inherently is same as Buddha’s, the same mind nature they possess on same basic; Two paths refer to that of peace and of suffering in the world; Suffering and sorrows come from sentient beings having attachments. Due to being clinging, six kinds of afflictions generate and sentient beings are thereby reincarnated in the suffering six realms. Peace and happiness are the brought about with the virtuous effects as the results of the heart of benefiting others as well as practices of virtuous deeds. Develop the heart of mercy, compassion, and Bodhicitta with the heart of benefiting others. Bodhicitta is like a wish-granting jewel that brings the sentient beings peace and happiness. When you possess compassion and Bodhicitta, you obtain the peace and happiness of such as wealth and longevity in this temporary lifetime. And, in eternity, you continue to gain the precious human body. With that you will be reborn in the higher realms or even in the Pure Land where to attain Buddhahood and obtain the ultimate truth of eternal peace and bliss. However, both the sentient beings who are reincarnated in the cyclic existence and those who have entered nirvana inherently possess the same foundation, the same mind nature. Hence, reincarnations can be treated the same as nirvana.

Due to the fact that the law of cause and effect is never off, one who hurts others by evildoings will get hurt oneself as well, which is just the evil effect; On the contrary, one who, possessing compassion, helps others with his actions, speeches, and mind will reap the virtuous fruits as well. Some children are born in peace, happiness, and easy to look after, while some children are born with a tendency to be nervous and unhealthy, or even die before they are born. These are all associated with their different causes and effects, as well as their karma.

Pervading means that Buddha’s wisdom, different from the worldly wisdom, perfectly fill out the space. Having realized and been aware of all things in the universe, the Buddha is able to help people obtain liberation from suffering of reincarnation and gain happiness. We human beings have many torments and vexations. Actually not only human but all begins, no matter a giant animal or a tiny insect, have sufferings and pains. Now we are not able to release even a tiny bug’s pain. Only Buddha is able to help us eliminate our sufferings and pains thoroughly, and further to benefit other people.

The difference between Buddhism and other religions lies in that the Buddhist teachings are means to benefit the sentient beings. The Buddha teaches the worldly people how to eliminate attachment and step onto the path to liberation from their suffering. The Buddha did not attain Buddhahood all of a sudden. Instead, the Buddha had learned from the wisdom of the previous Buddhas and had practiced for three Asamkhyeyakalpas with 500 lifetimes in pure bodies and 500 lifetimes in impure bodies so as to cultivate compassion and Bodhichitta for attaining Buddhahood. Buddha Sakyamuni is our spiritual teacher, who advises and teaches the worldly people with 84,000 practice means to liberate them from suffering.

The vast Buddhist teachings are like the many branches and leaves of a tree in the summertime. As the number of the Buddhist teachings is extremely large, some people would wonder whether it is very difficult to learn all the Buddhist teachings in one’s lifetime since there are so many practice means. How can we learn and practice the teachings then? However, even with such a great number of practice means, all of them are based on an altruistic mind—mercy, compassion, and Bodhichitta. No matter how vast or thick the branches and leaves are, clearly the tree has one trunk only, with its root growing underneath. The root needs water to grow strong and the root of the Buddhist teachings is mercy, compassion, and Bodhichitta.

However, it doesn’t mean that the sentient beings can attain Buddhahood one day even without practice since they, too, have tathāgatagarbha just like the Buddhas. We all have the nature for attaining Buddhahood. Nevertheless, only through seeking refuge can one learn, accept, and cultivate the Buddhist teachings continuously so as to uncover the nature. Take a piece of hard ice, for example, if it is placed in a freezing cold place, it won’t melt even after millions of years. Only when the ice is placed in the sun and exposed to the sunlight can it possibly melt.

With the knowledge of the rarity of a perfect human body and the benefits of the Buddhist teachings, the most important thing for one to do is to seek refuge. One should depend upon the virtuous friend, your guru, and seek refuge in the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. As a matter of fact, the virtuous friend, your guru, is the Sangha Jewel, his words are the Dharma Jewel, and his thoughts are the Buddha Jewel. Since your guru practices and observes precepts, he himself is a sangha. With his genuine experience in the Buddhist teachings, your guru’s advice is the Dharma Jewel. As your guru has a heart filled with mercy, compassion, and Bodhichitta, just like those of the Buddhas, and helps liberate the sentient beings from suffering with such an altruistic mind, the thoughts of your guru are the Buddha Jewel. The Buddhist disciples can be categorized into three types—outer, inner, and secret. Whoever has sought refuge is called an outer disciple. Those who generate mercy and compassion after they seek refuge are called the inner disciples. Those who have the Buddha-nature and depend upon their guru to learn and practice Buddhism so as to attain Buddhahood are called the secret disciples.

The gurus who can sit on the Dharma Thrones are the practitioners who have already broken off from attachments and attained endurance. A guru’s mind is completely for benefiting others and not for himself. Every thought from an ordinary person’s mind is all for his own benefit; however, a guru is all for sentient beings’ interests, has practiced endurance, and can tolerate everything done by sentient beings from their ignorance and blindness without any hatred.

After taking refuge, a disciple should learn, accept, and hold and protect precepts. And among the levels of behavior, speech, and mind, the most important is holding the precepts in the mind. After taking refuge, a disciple relies on the guru, should frequently contemplate that the guru uses the merciful and compassionate mind, which is void of nature, to benefit sentient beings, and should practice Guru Yoga for learning the guru’s dual mind of compassion and void of nature such that the disciple’s mind can be like the guru’s mind of benefiting sentient beings and attains Buddha’s treasure. A person who has taken refuge under the Three Jewels can attain the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha himself. However, if one does not hold the precepts after taking refuge, one will not attain the true joyful state of Buddhahood.

The founder Jigten Sumgon had once said, “Hope that all the sentient beings’ causes, conditions, and karma will all become mature in this life.” All Buddhas attained Buddhahood from being in the human realm. Buddhist sutras have stated that one should pray that in future lives one can obtain a human body and practice Buddha dharma. Although every child is all raised by its parents, some children can take refuge under and have contact with Buddha dharma even before they are born while some cannot; this is related to their virtues, merits, causes, and conditions.

Therefore, we should grasp this life, cherish the causes and conditions of practicing Buddha dharma which let us take refuge under our guru, and fully achieve everything in the sentences of “Stop all evildoings; conduct all virtuous deeds; purify my mind by myself; the above are all Buddha’s teachings.” Suffering is originated from persistence and attachment. When one wants to stop all evildoings, one has to eliminate persistence and attachment; doing so, one will be away from sufferings naturally. Wellbeing is originated from the virtuous thought of benefiting others. When one wants to conduct all virtuous deeds, one should practice a merciful and compassionate mind and Bodhicitta; doing virtuous deeds to benefit others, one will attain peace and happiness naturally. If one can purify one’s own mind, practice compassion, mercy, and the wisdom of void of nature, and do Bodhicitta to benefit sentient beings, one should be able to attain Buddhahood in the future. This is the true meanings of Buddha dharma taught by the Buddha to the world.

Buddha’s mind is like a blooming flower while an ordinary person’s mind is like a flower seed; although they look different, a flower seed can surely produce the same flower in the future. Do not think that you do not have the Buddha nature or the womb of Tathagata; each person has it. It is stated in the Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, “All perfect Buddhas, source of benefit and happiness, were born from accomplishing the true Dharma; and as that depends on knowing the Dharma practices, the Bodhisattvas’ practices will be described here.” Hope that everyone can follow and rely on the guru and truly practice Buddha dharma. Different sects of Buddhism are all practicing Buddha dharma and should not criticize each other; otherwise, it is not practicing Buddha dharma, but practicing greed, hatred, and ignorance. Those who are not willing to give alms and make offerings will fall into the hungry ghost realm. Those who have heavy hatred will fall into the hell realm.

Upon completion of Garchen Rinpoche’s speech, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche added that His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche is modest about his achievements and the speech today happens to be a quite small portion of his teachings; however, its significance must never be neglected by any beginners as you are, because what has been elaborated is the foundation for learning Buddhism. If one does not understand why to learn Buddhism as well as the significance of converting to the Triple Gem, neither does one seize time to make practices, one cannot have any attainment. Today, all of you have obtained the rare opportunity to receive teachings from Garchen Rinpoche; your path on learning Buddhism will be benefited. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche emphasized again that everybody shall pay grateful homage to His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche.

Garchen Rinpoche still bestows upon beings the teachings tirelessly even he is so old aged. In the course of his speech, Garchen Rinpoche praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for his activities in accomplishing Dharma practices and in propagating Buddhism and said thank you for the invitation. Although Ricnhen Dorjee Rinpoche does not understand Tibetan language, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows the meaning of Garchen Rinpoche’s teachings immediately before the translator starts translating them. After completion of the speech, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally served as a guide to support Garchen Rinpoche walking to the lounge for the Guru and later said farewell at the entrance of the Buddhist center. The interaction between Garchen Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche marks as a fine example for all the attendees, for their mutual highly regards toward each other with respect to the Buddha Dharma.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 94 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

May 9, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei, teaching four important practices in Vajrayana.

After seeking an admission of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, a female disciple obtained an extraordinarily auspicious opportunity, prior to the regular puja, to make public repentance in front of all attendees and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When she knew she got breast cancer, through her younger sister’s introduction, she was able to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and reported her illness to Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her “because of meeting me your cancer will not kill you.” She continued to implore whether she should undertake a surgery because her family and children hoped she would. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche replied “you rarely listened to them. How come you do now?” She knew what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said was true. It’s because she was afraid of dying from cancer. She hoped a surgery could cure the illness. That’s why she’d listen to her family. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her Rinpoche had been diagnosed with skin cancer. Through practicing Buddha Dharma, without chemotherapy or surgeries, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s skin cancer was healed. In her mind, however, she didn’t believe it’s possible.

Although she had met with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, great faith did not arise in her and she finally decided to adopt the surgery and chemotherapy. After the operation she seemed to get better. However, her hair just fell out after her first time of chemotherapy. Moreover, her body acutely reacted to the chemotherapy. She started to have high fever, and also rapidly became emaciated. She was too week to get out of bed. She was hospitalized for more than one month. When undergoing the surgery for the second time, doctor checked the tumor in her neck by the way. As a result of the chemical examination, it was found that her cancer cells had transferred to her neck. Due to her resistance to drugs, it had to stop the planned chemotherapy on her and adopt the radiotherapy. In the middle of the radiotherapy process, the receiving parts of her skin began to fester. And she lost the ability of swallowing. During the medical treatment process, she was not able to eat anything, she looked like having three-degree burn all over her body. And her limbs were bound up, looking like a mummy.

Suffering from the unbearable pains, she went to seek audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again soon after she finished the radiotherapy. This time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her if her therapy have all been done. She said: “It’s very suffering.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stated again: “I’m asking you whether or not your medical treatment are all done, not asking if it is painful or not.’ Then she answered: “Yes. It’s already done.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche furthered to ask : “What’s the result?”She replied: “As the treatments are just done, I do not know its result yet.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked: “What are you coming for?” She beseeched Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to permit her to attend puja. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche inquired of her about her intention to attend puja. She said because she felt her karma was very heavy. Hearing htat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her: “Everyone’s karma is heavy. Go back and think twice.”

Later when she was again asked to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche mercifully allowed her to attend the Chod puja and asked her to have a vegetarian diet. She promised to be a vegetarian and began to participate in the puja.

After she began to attend the puja, her health gradually became better. She also soon implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for her to take refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. From her face color or appearance, no one can tell that she was a cancer patient. Her colleagues, seeing her transformation, hardly imagined and believed that she could recover from such serious illnesses to today’s normal life like an ordinary healthy person. She then just shockingly realized that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the power of Buddha dharma are really so incredible.

A few months ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let the disciples vote to decide, in addition to organizing the Annual Lord Jigten Sumgon Memorial Puja presided over by His Holiness Chetsang on June 6th, 2010, whether to continue to host the Great Amitabha puja of transferring consciousnesses presided over by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in 2010. This female disciple thought that organizing two pujas of more than ten thousand people would require a large sum of capital and she worried that she would not have enough money. So she cast a vote of disagreement and said with an excuse that she did so because she worried that it would be too tired for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Later, she repented very much for her own selfishness. When she had been sick, the guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas had helped to relieve her from the sufferings; but when she was cured, she only thought about her own interests and forgot there were still many sentient beings who were still suffering and needed Buddha dharma’s help. Holding a great puja of transferring consciousnesses will benefit countless sentient beings; this is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s vows; and as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples, we should diligently assist Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to achieve the goal; how could we just worry about our own financial situations? In the past few months, she repented continuously and just realized that actually she was very bad and was not a virtuous person she thought she was.

After the disciple making repentance in public, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the following enlightenment: Most of you listened to the disciple’s making repentance as if you heard of a story and felt it was nothing to do with you. To the contrary, the truth is you would commit the same mistakes as she, but you are not aware of this. This disciple came to seek audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche with her illness, but, after attending pujas and seeking refuge under Rinpoche and then recovering her health, she soon forgot Buddha Dharma Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had taught. Consequently, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let disciples to vote whether to hold two grand pujas this year, she voted against the proposal because she only considered her own financial situations without bearing in mind those who have been suffering and needed help of Buddha Dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never instructed disciples how much money you should support pujas, even it is fine that you can only make offering of one dollar. How wouldn’t you have one dollar? Even if you don’t have one dollar now, you can walk to save the bus fare to make offering. But you are not willing to do so. You’re lazy, stupid, and reluctant to give. How would you be able to practice Buddha Dharma? If you are not able to attain mercy and compassion by now, at the very least, you should care about other sentient beings first. The voting is one of the skillful means which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche employs to teach Buddha Dharma. It’s not to do election, how could it possible for you to vote for holding pujas in democratic way? Such a thoughtful arrangement intended you to introspect yourself clearly and to think over your faults.

Not long ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a meal at a restaurant, witnessing a child keep playing with a pepper shaker and put it under his nostril to smell. However, his parents didn’t stop the child from doing so. Why did the parents spoil the child to the extent that allowing him to soil the shaker that other customers would use it later? It is because the parents thought they wouldn’t need it. Their child’s play with the shaker, therefore, was irrelevant to them. It’s similar to your feeling that things occurred around you are irrelevant to you. You just live your life without considering what happened around you or in the society. The fact is as soon as you walk out of the door of you home, everything surrounding you is absolutely related to you. Such selfish thought of “not-my-business” ought to be changed.

It’s important to make public repentance in learning Buddha Dharma. However, many Buddhist centers do not have such arrangements of public repentance because they are afraid that believers would feel sorry. They only say things that would please believers. One of the practices of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center is to let disciples make public repentance, not gratifying their vanity with sweet talk. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche established this center, Rinpoche insisted on not having any outside contributors. Instead, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche grants the right of supporting the center to all disciples. 3000 years ago, according to Ratnakuta Sutra, Buddha Sakyamuni once prophesized that during the degenerate age of the Dharma there would appear many non-Buddhist gurus who would attach their teachings on Buddha Dharma, flatter believers and disciples and misrepresent Buddha Dharma. For those non-Buddhists, they simply have to make repentance to their God. Such practice is in accordance to people’s lazy and depending tendency. For genuine practices of Buddha Dharma, making repentance is to admit and be responsible for any mistakes you’ve made. Additionally, you would be willing to accept and face any consequences of the mistakes and would never commit the same ones. This kind of making repentance is counted as authentic. Making public repentance is a way of education to allow you a chance to watch out for your own thoughts and behaviors.

Recently, one believer with cancer came to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The first time when he met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, his illness had resulted in a quite yellowish color on his face. Nevertheless, he wished to expand his lifetime because his wife was young with little children. On the first sight, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew he’d die very soon, promised him nothing and asked him to think it over. The second time he came to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinpoche granted him the audio-tapes of making repentance to listen to. His wife also encouraged him to spend more time in listening to the tapes. Not long after, he peacefully passed away with nice facial color, not like the earlier seriously ill yellowish color. It is because, after listening to the tapes, he knew from the bottom of his heart that he was wrong and accepted the karmic fruit. He’d be able to die peacefully. Without the help of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s conducting dharma or attending any puja, his genuine repentance had resulted in the fact that the hatred of his karmic creditors could be resolved so that he could sooner harmoniously pass away. This is all because listening to the audio-tapes of dharma teachings had given rise to his profound repentance. He didn’t even learn any Buddha Dharma yet, but just listen to the tapes of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma teachings. You have been learning Buddha Dharma for so long and yet still don’t recognize your mistakes and aren’t willing to correct them.

There are four important methods to practice Vajrayana: Taking refugee and practicing vows of taking refugee, practicing ways of self-liberation from reincarnation, practicing Bodhichitta, and practicing how to recite mantras.

(1) Taking refuge and practicing vows of taking refuge

To learn Buddha Dharma, first, one needs to make prayers to it. One can’t be granted to learn Buddha Dharma as he wishes. As those who don’t arouse reverence towards Buddha Dharma within themselves, their learning Buddha Dharma is of no avail. Secondly, one needs to receive and practice the teachings. Merely listening to Buddha Dharma without pleading to take refuge, one can’t transform your evil karma into positive karma. Listening to Buddha Dharma is ineffective to your liberation from reincarnation. It’s like before going to school you need to apply to a school first and then enroll yourself in that. Without enrollment, you can’t attend any school. In Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, you can’t take refugee as you wish. You first have to implore the permission from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After be granted the permission, you could register to take refuge, and then Rinpoche will observe your attitudes. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will decide whether you are able to receive this kind of dharma teaching and whether you have possessed a sincere and yearning heart to learn Buddha Dharma. Finally, when all things considered, you’ll be able to take refugee under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Recently a nun who receives ordination for several years sought audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She is the second abbot of an Exoteric Buddhist temple where two ordained disciples of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever stayed. Although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her that her illness was not cancer but she still undertook a surgery to remove a big part of her colon. The 2 ordained disciples, who already have 2 days of personal leave per month, wished to be dismissed for a few days so they could take care of the abbot in the hospital. The ordained monks or nuns should observe the ordination vow. It is not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wasn’t willing to allow them a few days off. It’s that to truly help the abbot is not to attend her in the hospital. How many days the ordained disciples can take care of the abbot? For such a short period of time of caring, can the abbot become healthier? In hospitals, there are so many patients who need care. Why would they just take care of this specific ordained abbot, but not others? Isn’t it a kind of discrimination? Learning Buddhism is not to make good friendship with others. If they genuinely want to help the abbot, they should strive to learn Buddha Dharma and recite mantras. If they can make 2000 prostrations per day in dedication to the abbot, it’ll be more helpful to her.

Long time ago in Yun-nan Province, China, an elderly lama had taught Chod dharma to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The lama passed away because of gastric cancer at the age of 80 something. He didn’t do any chemotherapy, nor undertake surgeries. When passing, however, he was in his sitting position. This is the power of practicing Buddha Dharma. Learning Buddha Dharma isn’t for the sake of good health, but rather for a good passing. It’s not that undertaking surgeries is wrong. It’s that as long as they have been ordained, they should break off from any afflictions and should not be bothered with any physical discomforts. They should repent of their evil karma.

An ordained disciple who lives in the dormitory provided by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been criticized a lot and she felt the other ordained disciple, who is also her roommate, is not good in some aspects. Ordained people ought to observe the monastic vows. Having offered food, shelter, and allowance to the ordained disciple, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is just in the hope that they can cultivate Buddhism free from care. A month is for reciting Buddha’s names and advising people practice virtuous deeds, rather than for criticizing. Since one has become ordained, one has to be the model for lay people. In the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng, the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng has ever mentioned: “a true practitioner does not see the faults of others.” No one is your enemy and everyone should be seen as Yidam. In “The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas”, it is stated that one should take his enemy as his guest of honor. This is also the difference between Buddhism and other religions. Other religions talk about love, and as for the enemy, they still attack. However, in Buddhism, the enemy is considered as one’s benefactor. How do you know your faults without enemies? How to practice Buddhism without them? One who criticizes all day long cannot develop compassion that is the very foundation of all Buddha-Dharma. Without compassion, one is not able to attain any religious achievement.

You have been received the precepts while taking refuge. One who seeks refuge ought to observe the Five Precepts. You are not able to distinguish observing precepts, transgressing precepts, and opening precepts. It needs Guru to determine. You are also not qualified to say that others are keeping, breaking, or opening precepts. Merely a Guru who is qualified to sit the Dharma seat is capable of speaking of disciples. You just have to keep your precepts.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche observes 5 precepts right starting from the day Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sought refuge under the Exoteric Buddhism. Someone ever asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to drink one cup to earn a contract with him. This business deal was worth over tens of millions of NTD. If you had been in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s shoes, you might have thought the proof of alcohol of the beer was so low that it’s fine to drink it first and then went back home to make repentance to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, not to break the precepts, insisted on not drinking. As a result, the businessman signed the contract in saying that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was a promise-keeping man so that he signed the contract on his own initiate.

You often ask about what your daily practice is. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already asked you disciples several times to recite “The Thirty-Seven Bodhisattvas’ Practices” and, with each practice, introspect what you said, you did, and you thought the whole day before they go to sleep. As long as one failing to achieve one of the practices, you have not been a Buddhist disciple today. But most of you are too lazy to do it. What is very important between a Guru and a disciple is that Guru keeps watching disciples if they are truly observing refuge vows, and pointing out their mistakes for correction at all hours.

While taking refuge, you recite the verses “Cease all evildoings and do all virtuous deeds so to purify one’s mind by oneself, which is all the teachings from Buddha.” All the things for one’s own profit are evil. You always do every kind of evildoings and practice no virtuous deeds. After seeking refuge, you ought to act in accordance with teachings, and that is to act according to what the Buddha has taught. Your mind will be purified naturally. Performing dharma rituals is not acting in accordance with teachings. Why do some people arouse evil thoughts within themselves continuously? It is all due to their intense greed or attachment. If one adopts all Buddha’s teachings in his life, his mind could be purified naturally. Richen Dorjee Rinpoche ever spoke the local bad language at the beginning of coming to Taiwan. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not say them any more naturally since starting leaning Buddhism. Because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does all virtuous deeds and ceases all evildoings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche naturally does not have any evil thoughts within himself. Last time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has ever said that it was like to turn off the power of switch and one will not receive Guru’s blessings if one violates precepts.

After Buddha Sakgyamuni has attained Buddhahood, there have been at least one thousand and two hundred disciples who had accomplished the level of shravakas following the Buddha and receiving the Buddha’s teachings. Although they were sure that they would be able to get liberation from the cyclic existence, they diligently followed their Guru in cultivating Buddhism. As for your position, you are not able to attain any achievement merely through self’s practice at home. You have no qualification to question about the position Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained, as it has been confirmed by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Unless you were His Holiness, you could have the qualification. For those who even doubt His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, don’t come here anymore.

Yesterday a believer came to plead for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice on how he could help his family member who contracted disease. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked him to do prostrations to Buddha two thousand times per day on behalf of his family member. At first he said no problem. However, after doing prostrations fifty times on the spot, the man withdrew his previous remark and said he was unable to make it. Everyone cherishes and protects his own body, hoping them not to get any hurt. When greedy thoughts arise in one, for benefiting oneself one would do sentient beings harm.

The disciple who just made repentance had shown the appearance of the hungry ghost realm and the fire hell realm. It was when she was undergoing chemotherapy, she couldn’t eat anything, had abdomen distention, and her limbs were bound up as a mummy, which was the appearance of being in the Hungry Ghost Realm or Fire Hell Relam, as she was only worried about her shortage of money and reluctant to give and make offering. It is not after death to begin the reincarnation. Which realm one will be reborn in could be told from his appearance when he alive. The cause for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to have ever contracted skin cancer was that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche liked to eat fish before. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never sliced meat with a knife in this life. Merely loving eating fish could lead to contracting cancer, let alone that you purchase and kill with your hands. Even you standing aside, pointing and picking out which fish you like to buy, and catching a live jumping fish are all count.

(2) Self-liberation

Several years ago, an Exoteric Buddhist dharma master of a disciple’s mother acquired cancer and dared not fall into sleep for that she was afraid that she might miss Buddha Amitabha’s coming. Therefore she just insisted that she had to be awake, and she would not have had died peacefully with such an attachment. However, the truth is that the coming of Buddha Amitabha is associated with what you have done in this life rather than your being awake or asleep. It was not until that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche came to hospital to bestow enlightenment on her did she be relieved and able to sleep. Although she received ordination and practice Buddhism for tens of years, she still did not attain the accomplishment of self-liberation. She could get rebirth in the Pure Land only be obtaining the help of the Phowa ritual conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s and got.

Buddha Sakgyamuni has ever enlightened us that there are eighty-four thousand dharmas, of which the most important is to teach sentient beings get liberation from the reincarnation of the cycle of birth and death. Turn on television, you can always watch there are accidents happening, injuries and deaths are caused. Many sentient beings are in sorrow and suffering but you pay no attention at all. It claims that there are more than ten-million Buddhists in Taiwan, from the north to the sought. In thus way the land should have been a Pure Land and supposed not to have so many disasters. Why there still are so many natural and man-made disasters? It is because these cultivators do not practice on the path of liberation free from reincarnation. The sentient beings are self-righteous, unwilling to acknowledge their mistakes, of attachment, and in this ways bring about afflictions to themselves. Therefore, they have been reincarnated in the six realms. Only through Buddhism cultivation could one liberate himself as well as others.

One who practices on self-liberation needs to develop firm supramundane mind. The reason why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could attain the position of rinpoche, in such a short time starting from thirty-six years old to cultivate Buddhism is due to the determination to obtain liberation from reincarnation. When you make up your mind to be liberated from the cyclic existence, you will benefit many beings. As this kind of people are rare in the Universe so that virtuous deities will come to protect and bless them. One who is unable to liberate himself is also unable to help liberate others. Not by putting on a cassock can one then be able to impart Buddhism or receive offerings. One ought to really be able to help sentient beings get liberated from suffering. There are three categories of being ordained: First, both one’s body and mind are ordained, in that way such as His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche; Second, one’s body is not ordained but his mind is, such as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who does not have the ordained appearance but have the supramandane heart; Last, both one’s body and mind are not ordained, just like you. It is like some monks or nuns still have many afflictions although they have the ordained appearance.

When in one’s favorable circumstances, he ought to be vigilant not to waste and consume all his merits; when in adverse circumstances, he ought to be earnest, responsible, facing and receiving it. Never say that your bad luck is coming from taking refuge. All the current circumstances you meet with are caused by what you have done before, rather than by taking refuge or not. The only one kind of possibility is that, after you seek refuge, bad things may happen earlier to let you pay off your debts earlier. It is just the matter of earlier time of happening. After you take refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will transmit the ritual of Achi Chokyi Drolma to you. Practice the ritual everday, but do not pray Achi for your own benefit such as dispel your husband’s love affair or bring benefit to your children. The dharma protectress is to protect you from being ceased by the obstacles on your Buddhist path. One who practices supramundane dharmas well will naturally have no problem on mundane dharmas. even though you practice the rituals of Dharma Protector every day, the Dharma Protectors will still leave you away if you did not act in accordance with Buddhist teachings.

Some people consider their colleagues karmic creditors when their careers are on a bumpy ride. In fact, karmic creditors are your relatives. With the vast wisdom of the Buddhas, it would have been termed as ‘karmic friends’ instead if it had not meant one’s relatives. Additionally, to transfer one’s karmic creditors is not to ask your guru, the Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas to drive them to the heavenly realms or pure lands so that they will not be able to return to bother you. It is to help your karmic creditors to eliminate their hatred and to prevent them from falling into the three lower realms. Thereby, their resentment towards you gets untangled and you will be given time to practice and learn Buddhism. Therefore, you will have the opportunity to attain Buddhahood, which shall benefit them as well.

After you begin to learn Buddhism, you are not an ordinary person any longer. Do not live your life with ordinary behavior, speech, and thoughts. You shall suffer losses, stay under inconvenience, take responsibilities for, accept, and face what comes at you. Do not constantly think that you have not met someone helpful. This results from the fact that you have never been helpful to others. So, how can you meet helpful people, then? When you act in accord to the teachings, begin to learn Buddhism, cultivate your mercy and compassion, and bring helps to others, you will naturally meet someone helpful. Those who have mental problems are unable to learn Buddhism. It doesn’t mean that we should look down upon them. It is because they might mistake the meanings of the Buddhist teachings and thereby fall into the hell. So, they will simply not be taught. All of you are people who have a normal brain, which allows you to listen, learn, and practice the Buddhist teachings.

Do not reject misfortune. Whatever that happens, good or bad, is a helpful karmic connection for your practice. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was aspired to learn Buddhism, his evil karma accumulated in previous lifetimes manifested at once. His business collapsed. His children were not obedient to his wishes. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche developed skin cancer and got divorced. Having had such experiences, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thereby was able to truly let go of everything. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche readily accepted his divorce because it was impermanent, after all, and will not be distracted by her during the process of dying. If someone loves you very much, he or she will definitely become an obstacle when you pass away. You, too, will be reluctant to let go of or miss the person, and thereby will not be able to pass away peacefully. When fortunate incidents take place, it means that your good karmic retribution has manifested and your merits have been consumed. The reason why so many pujas are held for you to attend is to help you accumulate merits. When misfortune happens to you, you have repaid the debts. When misfortune does not take place in your life and you are unable to repay the debts, it is not good for you. You constantly attach to all the changeable people, matters, and things in the world. Actually, you should spend your energy on the practice of self-liberation instead and ask for nothing in your worldly affairs. There is a disciple who still keeps the cremains of her dead son at home. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will expel her from the Buddhist center if she still have such an attachment and does not follow Guru’s teachings.

According to the great Gampopa, when a practitioner achieves accomplishments, his disciples and wealth will multiply immediately. Many enjoyments will begin to appear and his karma will be activated. Keeping this statement firmly in mind, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not had anyone acclaimed as sponsors in his Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center ever since its founding. All the disciples pledge hundreds of thousands of NTD each month for the expenditure of the Buddhist center. In this way, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not have to be influenced by the karmic force of his disciples or to flutter his disciples for financial gains. Besides, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche once instructed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to keep his disciples at a distance so as to avoid gossips.

Bodhisattvas have afflictions in order to help the sentient beings. When a guru sees his disciples remain in reincarnation, he will still have afflictions. Nevertheless, Buddhas don’t. When you attained Dharmakaya, the Buddhas will then reveal themselves before your eyes. The disciples will make guru joyful only by practice to the attainment of liberation from the reincarnation.

The reason why people open their mouths at death lies in that they do not know the process of death. It is also because they have attachment and are reluctant to let go. A practitioner who has accomplished Phowa will experience the physical and mental process of death. Mother Teresa, an Indian Christian nun, won the Nobel Peace Prize and did so many virtuous activities during her lifetime, but her mouth was open when she died and people had to wrapped her head to bring her chin up. If one opens his mouth at death, it means that the person does not want to die. Some people died with their mouth open, but were able to close it after Phowa was performed. Logically speaking, one’s bones and body parts should become stiff some time after death. How was it possible to make the mouth close? It was because Phowa, performed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, enabled the deceased person to let go.

(3) Cultivating Bodhichitta

Bodhichitta is an auspicious jewel. Before one generates Bodhichitta, he has to cultivate mercy and compassion. Mercy and compassion are the roots of Bodhichitta. To be merciful and compassionate does mean that you have to be a nice person who talks softly. Being nice is a basic requirement for a human being. To be merciful is to give away every good thing that one has to others. To be compassionate is to help others liberate from the sea of suffering in reincarnation. You think that you are salvaging people by introducing them so as to help them form karmic connections with the Buddhas. As a matter of fact, true salvation is transferring the person to the far shore of the Pure Land and helping him to leave the sea of suffering in reincarnation.

Genuine mercy and compassion do not have to be seen. A few days ago, a major earthquake struck Qinghai and caused a great deal of damage and deaths. We have seen the news media reporting that many people donated large amounts of money as well as provisions for disaster relief. Such deeds cannot be considered as mercy and compassion, but worldly good deeds. The reason why you are able to become a human being lies that you have practice the Ten Meritorious Acts in your previous lifetimes. Carrying out good deeds is a basic requirement for a human being. Mercy and compassion are different from good deeds. Upon hearing about the Qinghai earthquake, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche immediately performed Phowa and had the ordained people in all the monasteries perform Phowa as well. After his daily practice, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dedicates his merits to the victims of the Qinghai earthquake as well. All of them do their part quietly and ask neither fame nor wealth in return.

Genuine mercy and compassion are different from the good deeds in the world. Only when one can help liberate the sentient beings from the cycle of births and deaths as well as reincarnation does one have genuine mercy, compassion, and virtues. The practice of mandala offering is one of the four special preliminaries and is conducted to make offerings and accumulate one’s merits. Merits and wisdom have to be practiced simultaneously and compassion and Emptiness work in union. If one cultivates merits without cultivating wisdom, it won’t work. If one cultivates wisdom without cultivating merits, it won’t work, either. If one has mercy and compassion but does not have wisdom, he will become a yes man, help the wrong people and make mistakes. If one has wisdom without having mercy and compassion, he will not benefit the sentient beings.

To obtain rebirth in the Pure Land, one must practice to the achievement of purity, i.e. he will not be drawn by either the virtuous karma or evil karma. Buddha knew that sentient beings at the age of Dharma Degeneration have so intense karma that they could not have such an achievement. Therefore, Buddha compassionately introduced Amitabha. The Pure Land of Amitabha is the only one where one can obtain rebirth with virtuous karma. It is impossible to reborn in other Pure Lands in this way. You must do many big virtuous karma to transform a little bit of your evil karma. For nowadays people, being at the Age of Dharma Degeneration, the most appropriate methods of practicing liberation from reincarnation and obtaining rebirth in the Pure Land is to develop Bodhicitta, cultivate Bodhisattva’s path, practice teachings among people, and dedicate all body, speech, and mind to others with any self-benefit.

Yesterday Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped the sentient beings on his Dharma seat from 4 to 9 pm. To help the sentient beings is not merely to instruct them to recite a particular Buddhist sutra. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had to talk, advise, hit, scold, cry, and laugh. It was extremely painstaking. According to the Buddhist sutras, the human beings on the earth are very stubborn, self-opinionated, difficult to change and subdue, and most difficult to salvage of all. Before Shakyamuni Buddha came to the earth, several Buddhas ever persuaded Shakyamuni Buddha not to come since beings on the earth is most difficult beings to be subdued. If Buddha had never come to the earth, how painful would the beings on the earth have been? You all think that you are fault-free and wouldn’t admit your own mistakes. When you have cancer, you do not see it in light of the law of cause and effect or show repentance. All you want is undergo surgeries.

(4) Practicing secret mantra

According to the Buddhist sutras, there are seven Buddhas on the earth. The old school of Tibetan Buddhism regards Vairocana as the first Buddha and Buddha Sakyamuni as the fifth, followed by Bodhisattva Maitreya. The last Buddha has not been stated yet and Bodhisattva Maitreya shall make the announcement at his arrival.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw a Buddhist monastery in Kyoto proclaiming that a million recitations of Buddha Amitabha had been achieved. In fact, it is not a big deal to achieve a million recitations in Tantric Buddhism. “Amitabha” is actually not a name but a heart mantra and Buddha Amitabha used to be translated as the Buddha of infinite light and infinite life in ancient times. Heart mantras are the vows, activities, merits, virtues, mercy, and compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Reciting the Heart mantras of a Buddha, one will be with the virtues and vow of that Buddha. The reason why the Great Compassion Mantra became inefficacious after being translated is that the meanings of the mantras are actually the essence of all the Buddhas and cannot be explained simply in a single word or phrase. Before you attain the level of enlightenment of the yidams, such notions would remain as secrets for you. Besides, the purpose of mantra recitation is to make the mind of the practitioner to enter a state of meditative concentration. Thereby, his mind would be pure and clean and bring benefits to himself as well as the sentient beings. Nonetheless, with the written translation and images, people see the meanings of content during their recitation, and would get distracted, wondering if such Dharma protectors and Bodhisattvas would come. Hence, they would not be able to enter the state of concentration and their recitation would be conducted in vain. Such practice would only be better than not conducting any recitation.

The reason that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wants the disciples to completely recite at least a million times the Six-syllable Mani mantra is to help the disciples to create connections with Avalokiteshvara. To really practice the Six-syllable Mani mantra, a disciple has to recite the mantra in a retreat and practice the development and the completion stages; such practice can then have its effect. The phrase of “if one day, if two day” mentioned in the Amitabha sutra refers to that a practitioner performs a retreat and continuously recites Buddha’s name in the Eight Precepts Observance (Uposatha Sila). For Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, to recite completely a million times of the Six-syllable Mani mantra requires about more than 10 days. For your speed of reciting the mantra, it requires at least two months. A person becomes a monk or a nun in this life because he or she had once done the Eight Precepts Observance. If you have performed a retreat of the Eight Precepts Observance, you will certainly become a monk or a nun in one of your future lives. And being a lay practitioner in this life does not mean that you had not done the retreat of the Eight Precepts Observance in your past lives; it just means that you still have unfinished conditions that have to be handled in this life. Becoming a monk or nun is not for you to escape from the worldly matters. If you do not want to contact with people, you may be born into a Buddhist family and your parents will encourage you to become a monk or nun; you may even be born in the deep mountains of Tibet or Qinghai and are unable to contact with people. Either being a monk or a lay practitioner, each has his own causes and conditions; do not despise each other.

Practicing Mahayana and Vajrayana needs to be among the sentient beings. However, the minds of the people in the Dharma-Ending Age are unable to settle down; so they cannot open their wisdoms, become enlightened, and attain Buddhahood. Therefore, from time to time, a practitioner has to perform retreats. For Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, performing a retreat is to increase the strength and the ability. For you, performing a retreat is to let your minds and bodies have a chance to be away from the worldly matters; when you are in the world, you cannot see where you have done wrong; only when you are alone in a retreat, you can then see clearly your own faults. And after returning to the world from the retreat, you should not make those mistakes again. For the two great practitioners of Drikung Kagyu order who died a few years ago, Most Venerable Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche and Most Venerable Yunga Rinpoche, they were on retreats and did not come out to see people a few years before they passed away. Did they help to liberate sentient beings? Yes. Buddhist sutra has also documented that Buddha Sakyamuni had gone to the heaven and the Dragon King’s palace to teach Buddha dharma; hence, liberating sentient beings does not limited to the form of coming out to contact with the public.

Mantra contains all of the states of practices of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Now a rumor is spread among people that reciting Ksitigarbha sutra will attract the ghosts. Actually, a ghost will not bother you; a ghost knows clearly who can really help him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has liberated many sentient beings in the ghost realm, so ghosts will not follow in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s side; there are only Dharma protectors who will follow in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s side to protect Rinpoche. If one is afraid of the ghosts, one does not have a compassionate mind. Some people say that they have seen Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva; actually, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is currently in the hell to liberate the sentient beings of ghosts; hence Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s appearance will not look like a kind human being, but will make most people be afraid of.

Ksitigarbha sutra has stated that when you recite the heart mantra of Ksitigarbha, the virtuous gods will come to protect your home; this does not mean that to prevent ghosts from entering your home. Sticking Taoist symbols of incantation on the door has no effect on the ghosts. Even if a room is furnished for worshiping Buddha, ghosts can still come in from the windows or the other room. There are three places a ghost cannot pass through. The first is the Vajra throne of a guru, Buddha and Bodhisattvas. The second is the Vajra. The third is a woman’s uterus. When you took refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had mentioned that the ghosts or gods would not harm a disciple who had taken refuge. However, not harming you does not mean that they will not enter your house. The reason that you are so afraid of the ghosts is that you do not have compassion. Those who practice Bodhisattva’s path are very eager to help the ghosts.

Some people think that Tibetan Buddhism does not read Buddhist sutras. This kind of thinking is wrong. The monks or nuns of many Buddhist temples in Tibet will frequently read Ksitigarbha sutra Avatamsaka sutra, or even the entire Tripitaka. The practitioners of Exoteric Buddhism will also recite the Ten Small Mantras and Rebirth-in-Pureland Mantra; these are tantric mantras as well. Practicing Buddha dharma is not prescribing medicines such that your problem can be cured by reading a particular Buddhist sutra. Regardless of which Buddhist sutra, all of them will have effects on us. Throughout the process of reciting Buddhist scriptures, you cannot have other thoughts; you can only focus on the scripture. Completely reciting the shortest Buddhist scripture requires 15 minutes; it is impossible for you to have no thoughts within the 15 minutes. This is why mantras appear in this world; mantras are used to let our minds focus in a short period of time. There is once a story which documented that when a general recited Buddhist sutra, his mind moved due to food delivering from his subordinate; when he slept at night, a ghost appeared to tell him that there had been no effect for his Buddhist sutra reciting because his mind had moved and wanted to eat food during the time of reciting the Buddhist sutra.

Some people criticize that Tibetan Buddhism is not Buddhism and think that Buddhism has no Tantra, Tibetan Buddhism was originated from Brahmanism, and the ritual of fire offering was originated from the Persian Zoroastrianism. These statements are all wrong. The Ten Small Mantras recited daily by Exoteric Buddhists are Tantra. When practicing Exoteric Buddhism before, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also listened to the guru’s words and thought that there was no Tantra. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not understand why he could not do what the Buddhist sutras had stated. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not suspect what the sutra said. Instead Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche question himself what he could not achieve these. Until encountering His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and truly following His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s teachings and practicing Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just realized that Exoteric Buddhism is the theory and has no methods while Tantra is the method that can truly achieve what Buddhist sutras has stated. Tibetan Buddhism was also not originated from Brahmanism. For example, the Brahman way of meditation is to hang the eye balls on. The styles of meditation between the two are totally different. On the contrary, many Tibetan Buddhist cultures have retained the original cultures when Buddha Sakyamuni was alive. For example, after March, Tibetan monks will wear short vests; this was the same as the clothes worn by Buddha Sakyamuni’s family members at the original time. Instead, the clothes worn by Taiwan’s monks and nuns right now are the clothes worn during the Tang Dynasty; this is affected by cultures and customs.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche had not taught Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the four methods of practices mentioned today, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already passed this stage and could directly go to the final stage. For a disciple of great capacity, a guru does not need to say too much. This is like that it only took His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche 20 minutes to transmit Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche the dharma text of the Amitabha Buddha’s ritual of transferring consciousness without explaining many detailed contents inside; the dharma text actually contains heavy and thick contents.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then enlightened us that “the Sutra of Great Liberation” is not currently popular in Taiwan. This sutra will not be practiced by Sravaka and pratyekabuddha, and also by devils and ordinary people. Only practitioners of Bodhisattva’s path will practice this sutra. This is a very helpful sutra for us to correct our attitudes of practicing Buddha dharma. In Tibetan Buddhism, the teachings of many Buddhist temples have mentioned this sutra while the teachings in Exoteric Buddhism seldom mentioned it. Having any opportunity, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will print out this sutra and give it to all attendees here.

A few years ago, a famous ordained practitioner of Buddhist temple (Buddhist master) in Taiwan died. Before he died, he showed up with the appearance of senile dementia. When this person was alive, he had written many books which discussed whether Buddha dharma actually existed from the perspective of historical evolution. History cannot prove whether Buddha dharma is true or not. If Buddha dharma had no use to the human beings, would it be able to be spread and maintained until now? Buddha’s light illuminates universally; Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ light will benefit sentient beings every minute and every second. Buddha Sakyamini knew that it is the hardest thing to liberate the human beings on Earth; he also knew that the human beings on Earth could not live without Buddha dharma; so he came to the Earth to teach Buddha dharma. Those who are senile dementia or in a coma before they die cannot go to Amitabha Buddha’s pure land and will surely fall into three lower evil realms, unless they can receive the Phowa dharma conducted by a practitioner like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. If you mind cannot be bright and clear when you die, you will leave by following your karma. Richen Dorjee Rinpoche once had a meal with Drubwang Rinpoche not long before he passed away. At that time he still could eat by himself although he was very old-aged. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also advised his attendant of Drubwang Rinpoche’s not going to Singapore, otherwise, something unfavorable would happen. But Drubwang Rinpoche still went to Singapore in the next year, and passed away there. Several great gurus of Drikung Kagyu order, such as Yunga Rinpoche, Drubwang Rinpoche, were bright and clear when they passed away. Many Rinpoches and great practitioners of Drikung Kagyu order passed away while meditating. Many of them had even lived for more than 100 or 200 years of age. Two years ago, there was a abbot of a big temple passed away. From the news, it was learned that he passed away in the ambulance on the way to hospital. Even though gathering so many disciples and receiving ordination for so many year, the ordained monk still was not able to solve his own issue of birth an ddeath.

The human body is affected by physical strength, constitution, and life force. Life force refers to the strength of life and this is related to your virtues. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s life force is very strong. Not long ago, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche alone went to the sacred mountain of Sri Pada in Sri Lanka for pilgrimage, where Buddha Sakyamuni had originally taught Lankavatara sutra. Many religions think that the mountain is their Holy place. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, who is two years older than Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, can still climb up the mountain step by step for more than one thousand steps to reach the top of the mountain. This cannot be done by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. It indicates that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s life force is very good. Some people will often say that their bodies have pains or are not comfortable; these are related to their life force due to their lack of virtues. When a person has no life force, he will die. The only method of increasing one’s life force is to practice Buddha dharma. Because of practicing Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can then increase Rinpoche’s own life force; otherwise, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would have already died. It is life force that some masters could live for hundreds of years in the ancient time as depicted in the sutras.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceeded with the talk about the serious consequences of smoking.

Guru Rinpoche ever said that there was a woman from the Mara family became insane due to her deep affliction of sexual desire. Before she died, she said that “I vowed with my body all beings on this land would fall into lower realms. After my body was burned, there will be a flower that is totally different from all kinds of flower grows from my womb. As soon as smelling it, people will feel incredible happiness mentally and physically but harm their strength and life force.” The happiness here is the feeling of using smoke, and the flower is the poppy flower which the opium was made of. Additionally, this female Mara said that “it will spread widely so that all beings on this land could enjoy it”.

When Guru Rinpoche subdued the 9 brothers who destroyed the Samaya Precept, the youngest said he himself would be reborn in the China as tobaccos named as black poison. (The Samaya Precept is the vows for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Guru, and sentient beings) It will appear in the boundary, i.e. the place where has no Buddhism. Since 17th century, cigarette smoke originated from Indians in America, and were taken back to Europe by Spanish, then taken to Asia. Because of the spread of the smoking poison, the world unrests appeared continuously. There have been tens of millions of people died in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Subsequently, the Indian tribe was almost extinguished, and no any plants or grow in the place where they inhibited and became desert mostly. In addition to killing karma, the smoking poison is also one of the main causes that more and more people are contracting cancers. As cancer patients used to receive morphine to relieve their great cancer pains, those doctors and nurses indeed commit the evil karma by prescribing morphine for them. Taking Hypnotic to induce sleep or tranquilizers to cure Melancholia will result in the same bad effect. Using anestheticduring the surgery is not counted.

Besides he also said “those smokes will refuses Ten Meritorious Acts and conducts the Ten Non-Meritorious Acts instead. The life of the upholders of Buddhism doctrines will be so unstable that they will leave the land of Buddha. When this cigarette poison is widely spread, the city of Naga will be destroyed.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s late father, who was used to smoke two packs of most strong cigarettes without filters and loved eating meat during his lifetime, died suddenly from a heart attack. He helped many people during his lifetime, did many virtuous deeds while he did many evil karma such as smoking cigarettes and enjoying seafood. Because the power of his virtuous karma and that of his evil karma is nearly the same, his was not reincarnated immediately after he died. It was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche practices Buddhism and prostrated towards Buddha on his father’s behalf for nearly one year, so that his father could ascend to the Heaven Realm. Those who smoke definitely can’t be reborn in the higher realms. After learning tantric teachings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realized the smoke will cause the wind and channel clogged and as a result one will not ascend upwards but fall into the hell at the time of his dying. Do not think you are artistic and so romantic to have a cigarette. Smoking cigarettes and inhale poisons is the Not Drinking Precept of the 5 Precepts. Although there was not poison of smoke during the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, the smoke poison does be prohibited according to the precepts. Therefore, when possible, persuade those smokers to quit smoking. Or if they can’t quit, keep away from them.

For our own benefit, we destroy the nature environment, as well as the Naga and their living places. It is said in the sutra that one will fall ill by a glance of the Naga, not to mention offense from the Naga. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche feel so sad whenever a cancer patient come to express he himself can’t decide either to undergo the surgery or to take chemotherapy for their illness. In fact, both will hurt the Naga’s body again. How come the result will be good?

The tobacco smoke poison will make no rains, destroy the dwelling places of Gods when they ascend to the sky, make lunar eclipses and comets appear untimely. Therefore the number of times that comets hit the earth will increase. “Those who inhale poison will dry up their body fluid and channels due to the smoke poison, and will suffer 404 different illnesses. All those who inhale poison will fall into evil realms. Moreover, making others inhale the poison that he is inhaling equates to draw the minds of 6 million beings.” That’s why the smokers grow old much faster. In fact, smoking one cigarette will make you 3 months older. As you could find smokers’ skin is much drier, and they also have more wrinkles.

Persuade the smokers to quit smoking when possible. Or keep away from the if they don’t quit since the medical doctors claim that the secondhand smoke is also bad. Some kids who have problems of the respiratory tract due to their father’s smoking. Those fathers surprisingly let their kids inhale secondhand smoke. How could they say they love their kids? Guru Rinpoche ever predicted in the sutra text that there would be ordained monks/nuns who smoke in the future. Recently, there have been already some smoking monks in Burma and Vietnam .

“At te age of Degenerate Dharma, human beings will engage in all kinds of harmful behavior, particularly taking poisonous and smelly food instead of delicious food. They will take poisons madly to disturb all what they do. They will throw up and lose the control of their nose. Their health and complexion will decline.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche emphasized terrible consequences seriously, and advised all do the virtuous deeds and stop evildoings immediately. Eating meat is killing, and is also an evildoing. All what the sutra said are true. You should keep these in your mind firmly.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 86 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

May 16, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

Prior to the beginning of the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche granted an opportunity to a previous ordained disciple to make public repentance in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and all attendees. She has been an ordained nun for twenty years, and her heath had been continuously deteriorating. Oftentimes she’d suddenly pass out with no obvious reasons. Someone had introduced her to a hermitage for recuperation. After a long time of staying in the hermitage, however, her health didn’t get better. Her parents who have taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for a long time tried several times to persuade her to seek an audience with Rinpoche. She agreed and went to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In addition to bestowing upon her compassionate enlightenment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further provided her accommodation in a dormitory for ordained disciples. After residing in the dormitory for a few days, she fainted again. Because of her less faith, she left the accommodation.

Consequently, the frequency of her passing out increased to the extent of four times a day. Her parents once again talked her into seeking an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and she did. To her surprise, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not only didn’t reprimand her but kindly and amiably granted her enlightenment. Later, she also took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Although the frequency of her passing out had decreased after taking refuge, she didn’t change her erring behaviors. Her greediness constantly emerged, her hatred toward others remained severe, and the lack of filial piety caused her frequently talking back to her parents. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has instructed “without filial piety to his parents, one can’t do things as well as he wish.” As a result, she began to feel ill again. She thought it was due to the retribution of her karma. Her evil thoughts thus began to develop. Before this Lunar New Year Holidays, once again she argued with her parents and then left home for Yi-lan alone without informing her parents. It has been three months since her last attending the center’s puja. She came to implore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche yesterday and was granted the opportunity to make public repentance. She repented on her thoughts of hatred and lack of filial piety in the hope of obtaining forgiveness from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

Another female disciple shared her story about her taking refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and how she being helped by Rinpoche. Furthermore, she also made public repentance for her stupidity and mistakes. In 1999, she obtained a chance to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche because Rinpoche performed Phowa Dharma for her late mother. When her mother was diagnosed with cancer and hospitalized, her younger sister implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to give blessings to their mother. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche advised that their mother’s life only had 45 days left. Although this disciple had taken refuge under Exoteric Buddhism, she couldn’t accept the fact that her mother’s death was approaching. She even couldn’t accept the condition that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wasn’t going to prolong her mother’s life. Due to her lack of faith and her stupidity, her mother’s consciousness had been suffering for several hours after passing. It was not until Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed Phowa Dharma that her mother’s consciousness was transferred. Even so, she still didn’t acknowledge any auspicious signs appeared on the body of the deceased. She only noticed that the body remained soft after 16 hours of passing. Although her sister had already taken refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, her lack of faith had postponed her decision. No until two and a half years later when her older daughter had a car accident did she gain another opportunity to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saved her older daughter, she and her two daughters finally took refuge together.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche not only helped by performing Phowa ritual for her mother but also salvaging her father’s through Chod. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped her teach her two daughters. The elder daughter had the opportunity of meeting with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche earlier. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed her motto: “Enduring is the root of all merits.” The elder daughter, who was originally of arrogant, irritable and recalcitrant personality, has changed quite a lot under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings and guidance, through which her mother’s mind was also set at ease. Moreover, her little daughter also followed her elder sister to take refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When the little daughter was going to left her company, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche especially instructed her to express thanks and say goodbye to all of her colleagues who had ever provided assistance to her and taken care of her. Moreover, to those colleagues who had ever criticized her and done harm to her, she also needed to personally make an apology and say farewell. The little daughter completely followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instruction. As a mother, it was so hard to teach her own children act accordingly. Therefore the disciple had immense gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for helping with for her children’s education.

In 2007, her little daughter decided to go to Japan alone for studies. About this the mother was worried so much but did not know what she could do for her. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thoughtfully arranged someone to pick her up at the airport in Japan and further to assist her in settling down with her tens-of-kilogram luggage. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche repeatedly reminded her of caring about self-safety and the food, not riding all around. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was even concerned if she was too frugal on eating so that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave her allowances. The way Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche looked after her daughter is more thoughtful and attentive than that of her relatives. In previous days, her little daughter’s face was festered in the lower part. Thanks for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instruction of the use of nectar accompanied with Baoyuan ointment, her wound recovered soon. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also in person taught her how to clean and nurse her wound.

This disciple continued to express her gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the three aspects: it’s hard to repay parents’ love and care from childhood. Therefore, she had immense gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for transferring her parents’ consciousness; She gave birth to her children but had not known how to educate them. Therefore, she had immense gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for taking care and teaching her children; Self-evil karma have been accumulated and created on her own and she could not get released from it. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Buddhist teachings close the door to the three evil paths and start the path to the Pure Land for her. Thereafter, she had immense gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She has nothing but all gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She also felt repentant that after her mother’s death she did not make up her mind to cultivate Buddhism, and before she took refuge she was so ignorant and had no deep faith. She also made repentance of that she had not acted in accordance with teachings after seeking refuge.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed following enlightenment: Last week the four methods of Buddhist practices was talked, one of them is to receive refuge and practice refuge. If refuge vows are broken, the meaning of taking refuge would also be lost and the breaking one needs to re-take refuge. Besides, the dharma master who transmits the refuge vows must not break the vows. One who breaks the refuge vows is not allowed to transmit the vows. Prior to puja, the female ordained disciple had not yet truly spoken out the enlightenment bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that she should not put the blame of her faults and losing her temper on karmic obstruction.

Karma includes virtuous and evil karma. All the happening in our life is the retribution of karma. Even having a meal is the appearance of karma. It is your virtuous karma that you can have a meal because you ever offered food to sentient beings in your past lives. “Obstruction” refers to the power that hinders you from cultivating Buddhism and attaining Buddhahood.

Many people take karma as a bad thing. However, if karma would only be evil, the effect of your virtuous deeds would not be virtuous. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took himself as an example that he could seek refuge under His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and learn the tantric dharma from him in this life and furthermore becomes His Holiness’ heart son is also because of having the virtuous karmic conditions accumulated from past lives. On the other hand, numerous disciples Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has are also the retribution of karmic obstacle.

Making an excuse for your wrongdoings with the appearance of karma is not correct. When you are getting into a temper you may say you can’t help because it is karma manifesting! When you are talking back against your parents, you may say you can’t help because it is karma manifesting! Then, what the difference would be between this kind of behavior and animals’? Human differ from animals in that animals are not able to controls their emotion and mind, while human can control one’s mind. It is actually having one’s mind loosen and being unable to control oneself while one excuses himself in saying that it is the retribution of karma. Just take a look at animals that eat whatever they want and sleep whenever they want, without caring any other surroundings.

A Vajrayana practitioner employs his karmic obstacles as tools to learn Buddhism. When one’s virtuous karma manifests, he should caution himself and conduct more virtuous deeds so as to have virtuous result in the future. On the other hand, when one’s evil karma manifests, he should remind himself to practice more diligently. Ordinary people think that karmic obstacles can be eliminated and want them to disappear. Such thinking is incorrect, for karma will never disappear. Only through doing prostrations in repentance, expressing one’s repentance, and cultivating mercy, compassion, and Bodhichitta will one be able to stop the forces of one’s karmic obstacles so that they will not influence one’s heart to learn Buddhism.

When the nun who had sought refuge came to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to express her repentance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed her to do prostrations before her parents right on the spot. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw that she failed to do so with sincerity and did the prostrations simply because of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s command. In fact, it showed that her parents had spoiled her. They even felt sorry for her having to do prostrations before them. When they came to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the mother, who is also a disciple, still wanted to speak for her adult daughter and feared that she would say something wrong out of ignorance. Having spent a lot of money as well as energy for their daughter, don’t they have to be concerned about their own practice in Buddhism? When she talked back to her parents at home, they didn’t admonish her and thought she deserved being respected since she had been ordained. As a matter of fact, they, as her parents, should indeed respect their daughter if she observed the precepts of an ordained nun. Without observing the precepts, she is like an ordinary person and should be scolded when talking back to her parents. Parents should teach their child when he or she has made a mistake and can never spoil their child. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave direct instructions to her parents. If they still spoil their daughter and let her lose her temper without being admonished, they shall not come to this center to learn Buddhism in the future.

Many people consider themselves learning Buddhism and, in fact, have learned nothing about Buddhism because they have failed to generate mercy, compassion, and Bodhichitta.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been painstakingly receiving believers at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center so as to help them solve all kinds of problems. Yesterday a marrying couple came. Though they had set a date for their wedding, they still asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche if their marriage would last long. The woman worried that the man might have love affairs with others and the man worried about not earning enough money to provide financial support for the woman. Their question showed that they didn’t want to get married at all. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cannot ask you to become a monk or a nun, for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself is a lay practitioner. Nonetheless, the life styles of the two have to be integrated in a marriage. If they have such fear, it will be better that they learn Buddhism properly instead.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received the believers at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in recent days. Previously, any believer wishing to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche merely had to do make a phone call to register. However, now they have to queue to sign up at the ground floor of the building where the Buddhist center is located. The female disciple in charge did not ask advice of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche first since this matter is related to the Buddhist teachings and simply changed the rules. She let the believers come to the ground floor of the building at 2 pm and had them wait until volunteer disciples came at 3 pm to help them sign up. As a result, the believers had to arrive early and spent several painstaking hours waiting. The ground floor of the building where the Buddhist center is located was used as an office of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and the residents had to bear with the trouble and inconvenience. It would be so hot when June arrives. Who would be able to stand the heat while queuing outside then? Why do you disciples always have to bring trouble to your guru?

Due to the disciples’ selfishness, they wanted everything to be convenient for them and failed to observe the suffering of the believers. It also made people think that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was aloof from ordinary people. As a matter of fact, most of the believers who come to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have illnesses. In order to make things convenient for themselves, the disciples let the believers wait for several hours before seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Imagine that you yourself have to wait so long when you are sick. How painful it would be! You do not even have any virtues in your heart, not to mention mercy and compassion. Every single of you is the same! The female disciple in charge has sought refuge for years and has become even more selfish. As to the chairman of the Glorious Jewel Buddhism Culture Exchange Association, who was elected by all the members, did nothing at all. He had no knowledge of the matter and thereby didn’t deal with the problem. The longer time one has sought refuge for, the more problematic they become.

Just think that if you were the tenant of this building and every week there were a large group of people appearing in front of you home, this would have caused your inconvenience. Before when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received believers in the Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company in Yi-Xian Road, those disciples, who had claimed that they would like to protect Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, had once blocked the road of the residents in the building such that the residents had resentments in their minds. So the Building Management Committee frequently created difficulties for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and even obstructed the remodeling of the Glorious Jewel Jewellery store. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has endured all of these things. Because the disciples had not done well, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then hired the private security guards. Now Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has changed to receive believers in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. However, the disciples, again for the sake of their own convenience, let the believers wait outside the building and cause inconveniences for the tenants. Then when the problem arises, the problem will be given to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to solve. When having troubles, all of you come to seek Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help; when everything is fine, you then treat Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as an idiot. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always been compassionate to all sentient beings and has even risked his own life to help all sentient beings. However, you disciples let other people think your guru is very powerful and make yourselves high above other people. When you do anything, you will not consider for others and will not even consider for your guru. Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s private store. Even if the store were closed, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not bother about it. However, the venue of Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center belongs to all sentient beings. If the tenants of this building also generate resentments towards the Buddhist Association because of your behaviors and this causes troubled situation for the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, will you be able to take the responsibility?

There is also a disciple who is a prosecutor. For applying for police support to protect His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, he listed five reasons but could not provide valid evidence.. This disciple never considered this for the sake of the Drikung Kagyu order and the guru; he made those statements because he was afraid of being harmed. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has frequently and clearly enlightened all disciples that for one to practice Buddha dharma one must have the foundation of Exoteric Buddhism; if one does not have the foundation of Exoteric Buddhism, one will not be able to practice Tantra. How could this disciple criticize Exoteric Buddhism? This disciple’s statements will let the people of Exoteric Buddhism generate resentments and this is equivalent to falsely incriminate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has taught Buddha dharma for a dozen years, but he has not listened to it and has never taken into account other people’s feelings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has repeated the teachings over and over again; and you has listened for so much, but still stayed the same without correcting your minds.

There is a female disciple who has made tormas for many years. She asked all people in the torma-making group to donate money and set up a public fund. She would also like to use the money in the public fund to support the expense of offering objects in pujas. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had once enlightened all disciples that it was not a simple thing to maintain a Buddhist venue; in addition to money, the people of the venue were the most troublesome. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had strictly prohibited any money exchanges of lending and borrowing among all disciples and had never allowed setting up of any fund. Because as long as money and power are involved, disputes will be generated very easily. Originally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not know this. However, as long as a disciple had made mistakes, the Dharma protector, A-Chi, would let Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche know. On the spot, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructs the chairman of the association that he must return the fund to the people who have donated the money the next day; otherwise, the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center will be closed the next week.

This female disciple thought that she had sole power in the torma-making group and had made tormas for many years. However, recently she did not do well when making a torma for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She also hided the pictures of tormas and did not let other people see those pictures. Although she violated Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s rule of not setting up funds, no one of the disciples in the torma-making group dared to argue with her. Even the lead religious disciple did not speak her opinion either and donated the money with others. Do you all think she is powerful? Are you all afraid that opposing her will prevent you from learning how to make torma, from making torma, and from accumulating merits? No one even questioned the matter of setting up a public fund; this was exactly “following the evils”. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was always worried that the disciples had no money; for you had a lot of money and did not need to apply for the money from the Buddhist Association! Since you have so much money, why didn’t you think about offering the money to the guru? Sure enough, the people in the torma-making group began to quarrel about the money. The disciples in the torma-making group did not listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s instructions, and then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not be their guru! You all dared to offend the guru or offend Buddha dharma; you just did not dare to offend other people. The chairman of the association also reported that many years ago the dharma protection group had also had a fund of a few thousand dollars which was a flagrant violation of the rule setting up by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

One of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s old friends had often asked if he had any disciple of worthy vessel. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s answer would always be “No.” Since you have been taught and practiced for many years, the reason why you have not attained any achievement is that you do not listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and do not control your mind well. Being selfish, you do not mind anything except being scolded and punished. As long as you have the opportunity of handling affairs for the center, you would become self-conceited, thinking you will be like a president who is in the saddle. Some of you who see the problems only murmur behind and never propose in the meeting. Seeing numerous disobedient disciples that have not adopted the Buddhist teachings in their daily life, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche stopped imparting teachings and got off the dharma seat right away.

All the disciples felt great remorse. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been making such painstaking efforts to impart teachings and give advice. Nevertheless, the disciples do to follow his instructions and thereby prevented the sentient beings from listening to the precious teaching of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and receiving the benefit. All the attendees wept bitter tears at seeing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche leave the Dharma throne and everyone implored for the Buddhist teachings on their knees. The compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed the leading disciple to lead the attendees to conduct the Dharma Protector Achi and the puja ended early.

May 22, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over the auspicious Lama Chopa and the ritual of Lamp Offering at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Kyoto, Japan. A total of 125 people attended the auspicious pujas, including 1 Japanese disciple, local dignitaries,  dignitaries from India, local believers, and  disciples as well as believers from Taipei. Time flies and another year passed. For three years the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Kyoto, Japan has been established. Three years ago, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, the 37th throne holder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, picked the date, which is also the memorial day of Jigten Sumgon, the founder of Drikung Kagyu Order, for the inauguration of this center. Today Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche particularly presided over the very important puja, the Lama Chopa that requires a Rinpoche to conduct.

Merits, that are requisite for Buddhist practices, will be accumulated only after offering is made. Also, making offering can eliminate the obstacles from our path of Buddhist cultivation such as our family dependents that hinder us from learning Buddhism. Some people may not think it is important to learn Buddhism, while for gurus of the lineage and for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, learning and practicing the Buddha’s teachings is the most important thing throughout the Universe.

Tibetan Buddhism has developed into four main traditions: Sakya (the Colorful Sect), Nyingma (the Red Sect), Kagyu (the White Sect), and Gelug (the Yellow Sect). Different sects have inherited different practices and rituals, but these are all different means to reach the same goal: to benefit all sentient beings and to attain the Buddhahood.

Jigten Sumgon, the founder of the Drikung Kagyu Order, was born in Qinghai. Drikung protectress Achi is his grandmother. Achi’s parents walked to Nepal from Qinghai to circumambulating the Stupa, praying for a son. After that, they returned Qinghai and gave birth to Achi. You may wonder that why they got a daughter after they prayed for a son. Actually the causal conditions of the Universe are so complicated that you ordinary people cannot see into. Only Buddha can know what our karma actually is.

In ancient times, one’s marriage is arranged by his/her parents. However, Achi chose her own husband. After getting married, Achi gave birth to Jigten Sumgon’s father. Jigten Sumgon learned the Buddhist teachings since his childhood. At the age of twenty, he attended Phagmodrupa of the Kagyu Order, and became an ordained monk. In his thirty-fifth year, he founded the Drikung Kagyu Lineage. Once in the flourishing period of the Drikung Kagyu Order there had been up to one hundred and eighty thousand ordained disciples. In many sutras and dharma texts it is depicted that one of Jigten Sumgon’s previous lives is Lopon Ludrub, one of the 86 Mahasiddhas of India. Lopon Ludrub’s former incarnation is Layman Vimalakirti, who is of the same era as Buddha Sakyamuni and attained Buddhahood.

Drikung Kagyu Lineage, having been of 830-year history, puts its emphasis on retreat practice. Buddhism has been pervaded in Tibet for around one thousand and five hundred years. At first the teachings of Sutra was brought from China and then both Sutra and Tantra teachings were brought from India. The Exoteric Buddhism refers to the Buddhist Sutra and Shastra. In Tibetan Buddhism, one has to at first study the foundation of Exoteric Buddhist doctrines for ten to twelve years before continuing on the tantric practices. One who learns the theoretical parts will then need the means to attain it. And tantric dharma is just the means.

Most of the Buddhism sects in Japan are the Exoteric Buddhism. In Tang Dynasty the Tang Tantra in China was transmitted to Japan and then it developed into the Eastern Tantric sect. However, it is only one part of the tantric dharma. In the Tibetan four main traditions, Nyingma and Kagyu emphasize more on the Tantric Dharma, while Sakya and Gelugpa put more emphasis on the Sutra teachings. Jigten Sumgon, the founder of the Drikung Kagyu Order, ever prophesized that the Drikung Kagyu tradition would be entirely pure and of extraordinary power of blessing. Everyone who has faith in the Drikung Kagyu Order could attain liberation in this life.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche proceeded to conduct the Lama Chopa, and bestowed the explanation about the beginning part of the Dharma text: It is the preliminary practices wherein the purpose of this ritual lies.

What followed is the refuge prayer. Normally the refuge prayer is saying about taking refuge under Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Today’s refuge prayer particularly mentions about taking refuge under Buddha, Dharma, and Bodhisattva and cultivating the Buddha-Dharma that enables one to benefit sentient beings.

Then it continued with The Four Immeasurables prayer: May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes, namely the merciful heart; May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes, namely the compassionate heart; May all sentient beings never be separated from bliss without suffering, namely the heart of sympathetic joy; May all sentient beings be in equanimity, free of bias, hatred, and attachment, namely the heart of renunciation. Mercy, compassion, sympathetic joy, and renunciation are the most important essence of Buddhism. One ought to keep on practicing virtuous deeds with his body, speech, and mind till he realizies Buddhahood, and abstain from evildoing with body, speech, and mind till he dies.

It is mentioned in the Dharma texts: we ought to pray for the enemies who do harm to us and for all sentient beings that are like our mother. We ought to pray for them, for not falling into the three evil paths of hell, ghost, and animal. Buddhism, unlike other religions, does not try to dispel or kill the enemy.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then bestowed and transmitted the empowerment of meditation. Empowerment is the exclusive dharma in Tibetan Buddhism. Bestowing an empowerment upon you means that then you have the opportunity of learning that Dharma. However, it is not saying that you can just go home to start sitting in meditation and practicing by yourself after you receive the meditative empowerment today. Without Guru’s teachings, no matter what Buddhist practice you take, it won’t take effect. Today through this empowerment you obtain, it will help you make determination to cultivate Buddhism in the future.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to perform with bell and Vajra according to the Dharma text. Bell and Vajra are not the dharma instruments that can initiatively suppress demons. On the contrary, they take effect through being in use by an authentic Guru during the ritual performance.

The ceremony followed with the Mandala offering ritual. Making mandala offering is an exclusive offering ritual of Tibetan Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche put on the Dharma hat and received the offering. Only after getting the permission of the sect’s holder can one make a Dharma hat to wear. From the hat’s appearance, it can tell to which sect it belongs, and to what position, of a lama, a teacher, or a Rinpoche, the practitioner has attained. Even the hats for ordained people and those for lay people differ. The hat is for wearing during a puja or when some specific rituals are conducted, rather than at any time, as it indicates that the practitioner on behalf of all Buddha, Bodhisattvas, lineage Gurus and protecting deities receive your offering.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche kindly let everyone take a break for 30 munities with tea and desserts. Then the Lama Chopa was continued.

The conducted rituals are of offering. Offering can be divided into three categories: The outer offering refers to making offering with the common outer material objects such as fruit, flower, and lamp toward Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The inner offering refers to the clean and pure offering made with a practitioner’s entire body, speech, and mind. It cannot be made by an ordinary person. As to the secret offering, it is the secret offering that can be done only by a Rinpoche of Tibetan Buddhism.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the “Prayer of Mani Dedication to Rapidly Attain Great Bliss.” “Mani” refers to the six-syllable mantra that can eliminate all hindrances to our Buddhist cultivation. It can prevent the neighboring demon of ill health, including infectious diseases, from brining you harm. It also can cut off the possibility of falling into the three evil paths of hell, hungry ghost, and animal. It let you have the chance to listen to Buddhist teachings, to learn and practice Buddha-Dharma.

A true Buddhist learner’s life, merits, and wealth will be strengthened and prolonged. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself is the best example. If you want to increase your merits and fortunes, come to cultivate Buddhism. Without truly learning and practicing Buddhist teachings, one couldn’t obtain peace merely by praying. One’s career will not be affected by his Buddhist practices. Nor will his job or family life. Buddhism cultivation is to apply the Buddha’s teachings and it will let you feel safe and know your future is bright.

The puja was continued with the ritual of lamp lightening. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche appointed an ordained person and a lay person on behalf of sentient beings to light the lamp. Then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed the following enlightenment: What the Dharma texts you just read talks about is all related to Buddhist practices. In every Buddhist sect, the ritual of Lamp Offering is extremely important. It is also depicted in the Sutra that lamp lightening will lead to great merits. In Avatamsaka Sutra it describes: Buddha-Dharma is like a bright lamp. Without it one will be as if in the darkness losing his direction. In a dark room, even a faint light can light up the whole room and bring safeness. Besides, through practicing the ritual of lamp offering, one will be received and guided by Buddhas, Vaiśravaṇa and illustrious vajra kings to the Pure Land after his death. Therefore, each ritual in a Tibetan Buddhist puja has its profound meaning and far-reaching effect. As you have the causal conditions of attending this puja, you ought to cherish the opportunity of learning and practicing Buddhism.

May 23, 2010

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over a fire puja, an auspicious and rare tantric practice, at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Kyoto, Japan. There were 132 attendees, including dignitaries and believers from Japan and India, Japanese disciple, believers and dignitaries and disciples from Taipei. The fire puja is called “homa” in the Buddhist tantras. It is an offering ritual in which various aromatic woods, such as sandalwood, are burned so as to make offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. However, it is different from the Japanese homa ritual. When in Japan, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw Japanese people write their names on pieces of wood or paper and cast them into flames during the homa ritual. Such a practice is different from Tang Tantra, too. In ancient Chinese traditions which have lasted for thousand years, if one’s name is written on a piece of wood or paper, it means that the person is dead. As you Japanese do so, does it mean that you want to die young and go to the realms of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas? One should not invent anything that is not stated in the Buddhist sutras. If one does not act in accord with the Buddhist teaching, no merits or virtues will be accumulated. In such a case, one will fail to help others and will even do harm to himself. Such a deed will actually cause an adverse effect, instead.

During the fire puja, the practitioner needs to make offerings to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, gurus, Dharma protectors, and dakinis, practice generosity among all the ghosts and deities, such as gods of mountains, rivers, waters and trees, and then give charities to all the sentient beings in the six realms. There are four ways to conduct the fire puja. One of them is the practice of peace, which is able to pacify any obstacle and devil of diseases. It is also the most commonly practiced. Should any special circumstances occur, the practice of increase will be conducted. It is able to increase the blessing power and enhance the force which helps make the practice successful so as to spread the power of the Buddhist teachings. A special kind of grass will be burned in order to extend one’s life span. Rice grains are burned to increase one’s merits. Five different kinds of grains and various kinds of oil are burned to increase one’s wealth. Today’s fire puja was conducted as the practice of increase. If any enemies want to harm the lineage or the country, the practice of power can be conducted, but only by a His Holiness or a great Rinpoche. As to the practice of wrath, it is conducted when a war breaks out or enemies intrude the country and will cause the enemies’ lives to end. Such a practice is rarely conducted. Although the Rinpoche who conducts the practice of wrath is capable of transferring the deceased, the thought of killing has its consequences. Any Rinpoche who conducts the practice of wrath is someone who does not wish to remain in the world.

The fire puja can only be performed by a guru who has achieved the attainment of a Rinpoche. The practitioner needs to be able to summon the god of fire as well as the yidam, i.e. Acalanatha, literally Not-move Lord, for today. Acalanatha has a very close kinship with Japan. During the Warring States period in Japan, the samurais would pray for victory to Acalanatha. As to the reason why Acalanatha has got such special karmic connection with Japanese people, it is partly related to the Japanese culture. The main factor would not be explained today. If you are interested, you may consult Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche afterwards.

Acalanatha holds a sword in his right hand and a rope made up of gold and silver in his left hand. There are two hooks at the end of the rope. As to the sword, it is not used as a killing weapon, but as a symbolization of wisdom. Wisdom is like a sharp sword that can cut off all the afflictions. The sentient beings in the six realms generate desires. As their hearts move, the afflictions are thereby created. Acalanatha is able to cut off our afflictions with the sword. The hooks on the rope drag back the sentient beings who have made mistakes in the six realms of reincarnation. The rope is a symbolization of the Buddhist teachings and the “not-move” in the name of Not-move Lord, Acalanatha, refers to the fact that our hearts can be bound with the Buddhist teachings and can thereby remain still.

Acalanatha is topped by Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, which means that Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara is Acalanatha’s guru. If the practitioner has not attained mercy and compassion of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, he can never summon Acalanatha. Therefore, it would be impossible for the Japanese warriors in ancient times to get Acalanatha to bring them victory. Although Acalanatha looks fierce, his heart is very compassionate. His fierce look is merely shown to subdue us stubborn sentient beings. Similarly, parents would talk to their children peacefully at first. If their children do not listen, the parents will then show their angry looks so as to make their children obedient. Therefore, if the practitioner fails to attain mercy and compassion, he will fail the practice of Acalanatha. The so-called mercy and compassion refer to a basic understanding of the suffering of the sentient beings in the six realms.

The Tibetan Acalanatha that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has practiced looks even fiercer than the Acalanatha that Japanese people usually see. Besides, the devils of disease, death, heavens, and afflictions were under Acalanatha’s feet. The devil of heavens refers to the devil who stops the sentient beings from leaving reincarnation. Acalanatha is able to prevent us from being harmed by the four devils.

The statue of Acalanatha in the Buddhist center has a look that Japanese people usually see and feel. Its Tibetan counterpart looks even fiercer. The statue of Acalanatha you can now see in the Buddhist center traveled from Fujian to Yunnan with some unknown reasons. The statue was an assignment commissioned by a Japanese client in Fujian during the time when Taiwan was under Japanese rule. Nevertheless, he never went back to collect the statue. Later, someone bought the statue of Acalanatha and took it to Yunnan, where Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche eventually saw the statue. At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not yet thought of establishing a Buddhist center in Kyoto, Japan, but knew that the statue of Acalanatha would benefit Japan. Afterwards, this statue of Acalanatha was then revered in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Kyoto, Japan.

Crawling along Acalanatha’s neck is a python, which belongs to the naga family. If one has reverence and confidence in Acalanatha, he will not acquire diseases caused by the naga family. Any practitioner who practices Acalanatha will never develop cancer or incurable skin diseases. Besides, as the snake symbolizes hatred and jealousy, the python hanging on Acalanatha’s neck is an indication that Acalanatha can subdue the sentient beings’ hatred and jealousy.

As for those who love smoking, drinking, eating meat, speaking harsh words, and telling lies, everything has its cause and effect. One who loves drinking will develop Alzheimer’s disease, including being constantly forgetful or forgetting one’s own words. The reason why one would have yellowish or blackish teeth that are poorly arranged and have bad breath lies in that he loves telling lies. Some people would think that the problem can be solved as long as one changes all his teeth into white ones. However, as one can change the shapes of his eyes, nose and ears, the shape of one’s mouth cannot be changed even all of his teeth are replaced. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows everyone well simply by looking at the shapes of their mouths. You won’t be able to hide.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked if the rain was still falling and a disciple returned with a positive answer. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began the practice inside the venue and led the attendees in the recitations of Acalanatha’s heart mantra. Any attendee who has absolute reverence and confidence in the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, the guru, and the yidam, the prayer recited by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on behalf of all shall be effective. Seeing that the rain continued, the benevolent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let the attendees stay indoors and went outside to perform the fire puja himself.

Many dignitaries and believers disregarded the rain and went outside with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the practice and recited mantras, gusts of winds swept the grounds all of a sudden, causing the branches and the dampened prayer flags surrounding the mandala of the fire puja to wave vigorously and forming an astonishing sight. When the fire was lit, the disciples tried to protect the dampened mandala of the fire puja with umbrellas. Nevertheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told the disciples to step down. Incredibly, the flames in the mandala of the fire puja soared and became even stronger in the rain. During the practice, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche revealed the wrathful look of the yidam, Acalanatha, for a while, emitting extremely powerful blessing!

The rites of the fire puja continued in the rain and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche compassionately let the dignitaries and believers in the yard step forward to receive various offerings blessed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche such as grass, beans, rice and other kinds of grains so as to cast them into the mandala of the fire puja. In particular, the benevolent Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enabled all the disciples to have the auspicious karmic connection to receive the food offerings from their guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and to cast them into the mandala of the fire puja. The disciples, aged from 2 to 86 years old, all felt immensely touched and grateful for the guru’s mercy for them to have such an auspicious karmic connection to participate in the ritual of the fire puja. The practice took almost 3 hours to complete. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche painstakingly conducted the practice and recited mantras without taking any break and perfected the practice in one session. All the attendees were astonished at such an eye-opening event. Having personally attended this precious and rare tantra of Tibetan Buddhism, the fire puja, all the attendees gasped in amazement and felt great gratitude!

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then gave the following teaching: Today’s puja was conducted in the rain. Normally, a rain-free and sunny day would be selected for the practice of the fire puja. Nonetheless, even with the rain, the force of the flames was never reduced. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recited the mantra of Acalanatha, the flames even leaped in eight directions. Such fierce movements made all the attendees let out gasps of amazement at the same time. The fact that the flames spread to eight directions indicated that the puja would eliminate the obstacles and disasters throughout the area. As a matter of fact, from the Buddhist perspective, the rain that fell during the fire puja was no ordinary rain, but nectar given by the compassionate Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in praise of today’s puja. Such nectar would be able to eliminate the devils of diseases and karmic obstacles. This rain was indeed strange, as there had not been any rain in the previous day and won’t be any for the next day. It particularly fell today, the day when the fire puja was conducted. Maybe you would think such thinking is based on superstition, but the powers of the Buddhist teachings are incredible and unimaginable for ordinary people. Besides, the heavy rain that fell today indicated that this nectar should eliminate the many obstacles and disasters in the local area.

At the end of last year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche already said that many volcanic eruptions would occur this year. The reason behind this phenomenon lies in that the human beings have created such heavy killing karma that the Land God became upset. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that, as the practice had been completed, no major fires would break out in Kyoto this year. Even if the volcanoes in the vicinity erupt, they will not have any impact upon Kyoto, so everyone can live a peaceful life.

After you attended the fire puja, do not think that you have to drink alcohol since you are capable of drinking a lot of it. Before learning Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been able to drink up a bottle of XO himself and had had to eat fish or meat during each meal. Nevertheless, after beginning to learn Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realized that such deeds were harmful to himself as well as to the world and, therefore, refrained from doing so.

Do you think that animals have no feelings? A believer who has a pet dog told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche during today’s lunch time that her dog could talk. The others did not believe her, so she imitated her dog’s voice in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then said that the dog was saying that it didn’t like to eat a certain kind of food that was blackish and hard. The dog owner confirmed the statement at once. When you want to protect your own dogs and pets, why don’t you protect pigs or fish?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has full confidence and guarantees with his own life that anyone who eats meat will not go to the heavens. Nowadays, even the westerners and the whole world are advocates of the plant-based diet. They do so not because of any belief or religion, but because the gas emissions from the cattle farming industries have caused global warming. If you still continue to eat meat, you are one of the many who cause harm to the earth. How can you let your ancestors and future generations down?

Regardless of the reasons which had brought you here, if you didn’t have contact with the Buddhist teachings in your previous lifetimes, you would not have the karmic connection to attend such a puja. You should cherish this puja. How can you cherish such karmic connection then? You should listen to the teachings of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the guru and refrain from doing any harm to the sentient beings. Do not eat meat any more. If you have sufficient confidence and reverence towards Acalanatha and have piety towards the Buddhist teachings, you will be helped. Sitting on the high throne, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to take the responsibility for every word that is spoken.

On the same day, the regular puja was held at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. Disciples and believers reverently listened to the audio-recording of the teaching by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche .

Prior to the beginning of the puja, a female disciple shared her experience. On April 11th around 5:30 pm, her ex-husband suddenly fell down and passed out on a street while running errands in a night market. There were no vital signs as he was sent to the hospital. Since he only brought his cell phone with him, the policemen could only indirectly contact his elder daughter who called the female disciple. When the disciple first received the news, her feelings of hatred, hostility, and bitterness immediately arose. Because of such feelings, she’d mistake “emergent care” as “emergency room” so she ignored the first message. It’s not until the second call from her daughter did she realize the irreversible fact of “the impermanence of life.” At once, she was regretful for her evil thoughts and selfishness. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once instructed: If one had not learned the Buddha Dharma while alive, he’d absolutely go through pain and fear while passing. The feeling of pain and fear would definitely result in, after passing, his entering the three evil realms and thus in the suffering ocean of reincarnation. Therefore, the only thing the disciple could do was, together with her children, pray to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in hopes that her ex-husband could be helped. As the disciple rushed home, her younger daughter and her son had already made prostrations in front of the dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. They soon brought nectar pills and the dharma photo and hurried to the emergency room of the hospital.

Upon their arrival at the emergency room, she told her children “you father had already died. More medical procedures wouldn’t bring him back and will only cause more pain to him. You shouldn’t cry by his side, either, because your crying will make his consciousness linger around and can’t leave at peace. That will cause him to enter the three evil realms. Having him take the nectar pills can protect him from entering the evil realms. Now only His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the Vajra Guru, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can help and prevent your father from entering the three evil realms. It won’t work unless three of you pray with your extremely reverent and sincere hearts.” By the side of the deceased’s body, the disciple and her three children began to recite Mani Mantra in front of the dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche till four o’clock of next morning. It has been ten hours passed after the father died. Before the deceased was sent to the refrigerator, although the color of the deceased’s body was dark and there was a large bruise on his right side of the neck, his originally open eyes and mouth were now closed as if he was sleeping. This sign was the manifestation of the incredible compassionate power of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Because the sudden death occurred in a public place, the family had to wait for the prosecutor and the results of performing forensic autopsy. Since the children were all under the age of 20 and the disciple had already divorced for more than two years, they were not able to obtain a death certificate. The grandmother and uncles had to come to Taipei, receiving an investigation, and the recent medical records had to be sent to the prosecutor. Then the date of the trial to determine the cause of the death would be assigned. Without first-hand experience, it’s impossible to imagine the grief of a parent who had to burry her son. Without the guru and the Buddha Dharma, the mental and physical suffering and torture of the family’s facing the sudden shock would be unfathomed.

The eldest daughter began a vegetarian diet on her initiative. The grandmother and the aunt also asked to seek an audience with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and agreed to adopt a vegetarian diet for the upcoming meeting. In the evening of April 17th, they met Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After inquiring into the nature of the meeting, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche promised the children’s wish and began to bestow blessing onto their father’s consciousness. Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told them that the cause of their father’s death should be related to cardiac problems and enlightened the children that their father once killed hogs. Although he might not kill hogs in person, his witnessing would count for killing. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also bestowed blessing onto the grandmother who had felt ill because of her grief. Her feeling of illness and insomnia were cured without taking any medicine.

During the trial, the grandmother didn’t feel as sorrowful as before, accepting the fact and receiving the death certificate peacefully. The death certificate indicates that the cause of death was cardiogenic shock, the same as what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had told them. The day before the cremation, the facial expression of the deceased appeared to be in sleep. The dark purple huge bruises on the right side of the neck disappeared and become pale and slightly bloodshot. Both ears, more importantly, had turned red, although the body had remained in the refrigerator for nearly three weeks. Such phenomena can’t be understood in worldly experience. It is a testimony of the power of compassion and mercy of the Buddha Dharma. The next day after the cremation, the ashes appeared to be pinkish red and pale green. Near the parietal and occipital bone there was a rounded hole and there were some relic flowers, too.

When facing the end of her marriage, this female disciple didn’t truly believe and accept the fact that the divorce was the fruit of her evil karma. She has allowed her ego, greediness, hatred and ignorance to grow. Her mind has been strongly rigid, not being pliable enough. Being capricious and self-righteous, she had not practiced the methods of endurance and forgoing. After the divorce, she thought she was no longer feeling hatred. But the truth is she has been only evading her true self without examining her erring behaviors, not to mention courageously correcting any mistakes.

She was grateful to her parents because it was them who shared many auspicious efforts of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to help sentient beings. So she would begin to attend pujas and then she’d accumulate sufficient causes and conditions to take refuge. She was also grateful to her ex-husband. His death and their broken marriage taught her once again how powerful one’s karma could be and how impermanent one’s life is. Finally, she was grateful to the Venerable Vajra Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. With Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s pure, immense, and compassionate vows and Rinpoche’s teachings of auspicious Buddha Dharma, she and her children were able to peacefully and kindly conclude their karmic connections with their father.

After the disciple’s sharing, disciples and believers reverently listened to the audio-recording about “oral transmission of Four Preliminary Practices” which was bestowed by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche on December 14th of 2003.

Before we learn any dharma, we need to seek refuge and make vows. Many people would claim that making vows means doing charities and accumulating merits. These, however, are not making vows. They are simply making offerings and carrying out kindness one should do. The meaning of making vows refers to making Bodhichitta vows. No matter which dharma one practices, in the end, one hopes to benefit oneself and others. To benefit self isn’t to make you rich, to prolong your lifespan, or to get lucky. Rather, it is to be able to break off from the cycle of birth and death. Only when you are certain that you can be liberated from reincarnation, you’ll be able to help those sentient beings in need. To achieve this goal, we ought to clearly understand the meaning of learning the Buddha Dharma, be it learning the Buddha Dharma or practicing any Buddhist methods.

Those who with lowest capacity might learn the Buddha Dharma to satisfy their feeling of being benevolent. They might also hope to improve their adversities through gradual influence of Buddha Dharma. Those who with middle capacity want to learn the Buddha Dharma due to their understanding of the sorrows of also reincarnation. They hope learning the Buddha Dharma can put a halt to the suffering of reincarnation. Those with best capacity realize that sentient beings are all living in the suffering ocean and need help. They also recognize that the opportunity to learn the Buddha Dharma stems from the kindness of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. To pay their gratitude to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, they diligently learn and practice the Buddha Dharma in hopes to benefit more sentient beings. With such thought, they will be able to walk one the correct path of practicing the Buddha Dharma.

The reasons that you have so many problems such as feeling of people letting you down or not respecting you lie in the fact that you never want to benefit others, nor does it occur to you to help those in need. You never thought of every individual is living in the ocean of sorrows. You only think of you own suffering and people’s fault of letting you down. How does this problem stem from? It’s because you have not made your vows yet. Making vows is very important, especially for us learning Vajrayana. Why can Esoteric Buddhism help us to quickly obtain achievement? It’s because of making great Bodhichitta vows. In Exoteric Buddhist tradition in Taiwan, practitioners also claim that they have made vows of Bodhichitta as well as practiced Bodhisattva’s path to benefit sentient beings. The vows of Bodhichitta they made, nonetheless, are not great enough. Their vows of Bodhichitta are only carrying out through this lifetime. The so-called “contributing one’s body and life” is to giving his whole life and striving to learn dharma so as to benefit sentient beings. By this reasoning, practitioners in Exoteric Buddhist tradition are more likely to hit a dead end in the sense that they think this life is the most important one to attain any accomplishment. By attaining the so-called accomplishment, they will be able not to be reborn as human beings. Whereas making vows in Esoteric Buddhism refers to the meaning that as long as there are sentient beings in the ocean of suffering, we should continuously help them to leave the ocean of suffering. Even if there is only one exists, we should do the same. Rarely does anyone dare to make such a vow, not even thinking about it. You wouldn’t even help your colleagues or take care of your subordinates, let alone making such a great vow of Bodhichitta. You are good at calculating how much money left and how much of your expense. You never ponder upon how to benefit your subordinates. Such behavior has nothing to do with making vows of Bodhichitta.

If you would like to achieve anything in this lifetime, you have to understand the meaning of Bodhichitta. That’s why we call Bodhichitta as an extraordinary treasure. Without Bodhichitta, you can’t achieve anything or learn any dharma. In Taiwan, many people have read sutras, recited mantras, made prostrations to Buddhas, and learned Esoteric or Exoteric Buddhism. No practitioners have attained any accomplishment either lay or ordained practitioners. It’s because they haven’t vowed Bodhichitta. It doesn’t take a guru to teach or force you making vows of Bodhichitta. A guru will simply teach you the existence of Bodhichitta. To practice it or not solely depends on your decision. When H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche taught the Buddha Dharma to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche didn’t teach how to vow. To the contrary, you often come to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and ask the question of how to make a correct vow. The question indicates that the person is afraid of making so great a vow that he can’t carry it out and then will be punished. He is also afraid of making a too insignificant vow to benefit from it. This kind of person can’t be a practitioner in Buddhism. All of his thought is self-interested. He fears of sacrificing, suffering, making contribution, and being in an unfavorable situation. That is, his thoughts are nothing but selfish. A person with such mindset can never correspond with Buddhas who wouldn’t have their own thoughts, never planning for self-interests. The authentic Buddha Dharma means selfless. It’s wrong to think that listening to Buddhist masters’ teaching of Buddha Dharma is practicing authentic Buddha Dharma. Nor is it correct that reciting the Mani Mantra, making prostrations, or making financial offering is authentic Buddha Dharma. The dharma of being selfless isn’t just for practicing the Buddha Dharma. It’s also useful in your work place. To be successful in your career, you must be a selfless worker who would fight for the sake of the company. How come you still encounter so many obstacles and enemies in your work place and how come your subordinates don’t follow your instructions or pay respect to you? It’s because you are too selfish. You are in a great need of a “me.”

Before learning the Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only knew one thing is that the company can be sustained when the company has the revenue. In his concept, it is not necessary to flatter the boss or the employee must be obedient to the boss, the only way is to do your best to let the company earning money.  The definition of selflessness is to be exhibiting, or motivated by no concern for oneself and to fulfill one’s duty. When you did not fulfill the duties, you will feel that it is difficult to learn the Buddhism. The problem is that one holding to the concept of the ego: thought your idea is definitely right, most of important thing is your feeling. You don’t have to care about others’ feeling. If you are not selfless, it is impossible to attain the Bodhicitta. In the past, those masters did not mention how to vow for the Bodhicitta, only mention that the vows must benefit for all sentient beings: to learn and practice Buddhism to benefit all beings. If you cannot do it by this way, there is useless for nothing. We are coming from the sentient beings, therefore we help the sentient being and benefit for oneself as well. It is one holding to the concept of the ego when you are thinking that I am learning and doing well. The ego is the evil thoughts. The Buddha is that “I” do not exist. Buddha can realize and see it thoroughly and clearly. In the Diamond Sutra, it teaches no attachment to the form of person, self, sentient beings and life-span, those forms are dividing the difference between each others, the time differentiation, and likes and dislikes. Before doing everything, you firstly think whether it is good for me?Will there be any disadvantage for me? Would it be harmful for me? You even did not start to do it and have already thought about it, and do the same way to learn the Buddhism: Wish the Bodhisattva could see you, wish Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could pay attention for you. Wish Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can praise you because you have done a lot of things. After taking refuge under His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has done lots of devotion to the Drikung Lineage. However His Holiness openly commended Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s unswerving devotion to the Drikung Lineage until the Snake Year Great Teachings in 2001 and the inauguration ceremony of the Songtsen Library held in 2003. Why did His Holiness start to praise Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? Because he understood that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had attained the stage of selflessness, none could ripple any waves of his mind. How could Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche achieve it? That is because of generating aspiration Bodhichitta. So it is useless to recite mantras and prostrate towards the Buddhas when you are haggle over every penny and forget about the gratitude from the Bodhisattva. When you have need for the help of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, you can offer everything. However you may forget everything after your life being saved. The sentient beings in the ghost realm always return the favor, but human beings don’t. Why? Because you do not learn the Buddhism, or unable to carry out the action in accordance with the teachings, or you are self-centered. You cannot obtain any accomplishment; then it is hard to generate the aspiration Bodhichitta. It is very important to have the Bodhichitta. Once you have the Bodhichitta, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will help you to achieve it. Even if you did not make repentance before, the Karmic power can be eliminated. Because when you generate the aspiration Bodhichitta, the time of being a Buddha will be shorten, the karmic creditors will forgive you waiting for you. Because once you are attaining a Buddha, they can follow you as well. Lots of people are afraid to make a widely vow. We do not need to invent the vows, it will not make mistake to vow according to Bodhisattvas’ vows. For example, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s vow- Would not attain Buddhahood before all sentient beings attain it — is similar with Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s vow. So those beings, which are not rich, with suffering would come to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for help. So Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s purpose is to help them and let them to learn the Buddhism. It is impossible to achieve in one’s lifetime when a person with lowest capacity if one is afraid of blame or strict guidance. So before we would practice any means of the Buddhist teachings, two things must be done: taking refuge and arousal of mind motivation.

What is called “taking refuge”, it is not merely the ritual of taking refuge; we must take refuge when we practice each of Yidams, then we can learn and have the blessings from them. The most important purpose of taking refuge is that we have to learn their ways how to attain Buddhahood. Each of Yidams has the means of practice to attain the Buddhahood and the vows of practice. If we are learning one of Yidams, we have to follow it accordingly, then we have the opportunity to be no difference with the Yidam. If you don’t want to learn it, you are still egocentric and only thinking of yourself for every day. You will not learn the vows power, the compassion, and the means of the Yidams. So do not think they are only four short dharma verses, they are included the basic of the Buddhism and motive power. If one has no motive power, he cannot attain the Buddhahood and he will not achieve any accomplishment in practice. When you realize the reason why you need to generate the Bodhichitta, you will not be egocentric and do those things, which can show yourself, in order to let the guru know that you are so smart and very important. Because when you have generated the Bodhichitta, you will know the purpose of your rebirth and what is your responsibility is to attain the Buddhahood to achieve the accomplishment for you and all beings, not to show whether you are important or not. If you are do some things which can boast of yourself in front of the guru, you have no the Bodhichitta! The ordinary ones are without the Bodhichitta, therefore they will do the evil karma and be far away from those who practice the good deeds because they are different kind of people.

Why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always reminds you, the Dharma Protector will expel those who are not well following the teachings. If your mind is still evil, the Dharma Protector will not allow you to stay here, because the dharma venue is a place where can let you to practice the good deeds and to learn and practice Buddhism, not a place for worships and praying for desires, or to change your fortune. If you would like to change your fortune, there are lots of methods can let you to change it in Tantra. But you have to make offerings before conducting the Dhama. That is not Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would judge your offerings but making offerings has been a preliminary part which mentioned in the Dharma texts. Even some of the dharma texts mentioned that you have to provide a quantity of gold to make offerings. Why did the Dharma texts mention that? If one does not make any offering, he will not have any merits. Without merits, it will not be successful for the Dharma. So there are criteria for a successful ritual. You might see that there are many offering rituals in this Dharma. The “Eight Offerings” is a kind of example for the reason. During the rituals, those who are coming may not be the Buddhas, maybe the Bodhisattvas or Dharma Protectors. If the sentient beings did not attain above the eight stage of Bodhisattva, he will have the human habits to see whether you have a reverential mind and a mind to let things pass. When you can let go and the thing will be changed. In other words, the Bodhichitta is a mind of offering. When one has generated the Bodhichitta, he will not let the sentient beings to be worried. So No matter what you are at home or at company, if you are often angry and thinking others let you down, you are not deserved to be a disciple in the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center.

Previously, before practicing Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was a very powerful person in the company. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never had any enemy. Why? It was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would share one third of the earned profit with his colleagues, even with the colleagues not in the same sales division. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very generous and really did not place importance on the concept of money. Why did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never have any enemy before when he was working? A person has to be able to give up his money! Money is not an inherent part of the human being! Whatever people liked, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would give whatever to them! Even if at first people would feel that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had given them a lot of pressure, in the end, they liked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help them make money! Why do you have so many enemies? It is because you are reluctant to give alms! Why can no one follow Buddha’s teaching of making offerings with one fourth of one’s salary? It is because you have never done so!

Why has Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always taken his money to make offerings? This is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always been doing so since the childhood. This is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s habit from past lives. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not be painful if he suddenly have no money and will also not be very happy if he suddenly has money. Money will come and go and one cannot keep it forever. Some person had taken a lot of money from others; later, that money were spent by his children and he became poor. Some person had saved a lot of money in his life, but he later became sick and exhausted all the money. You usually only thought to yourself, “I am a good person.” However, the definition of a good person is not like that. The definition of a good person is a person who let everybody be happy! You are a good person if you can do it. Where are all kinds of disputes of this world coming from? From the money. When you collapsed to the bottom, why couldn’t you climb up? It was because you had not given alms and made offerings when you had had money. Sharing money with colleagues is also a kind of generosity to let them be happy! Before when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself was a company’s employee, there were two salesmen who had not brought in any business to the company; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche even supported them for three months, paying them salary using his own money. Who can do that? You cannot do that and do not dare to do that. You will give money to your children, no matter how much; but you are reluctant to give others even a little.

Therefore, if you cannot give up your money, you are absolutely unable to generate Bodhicitta. Because you are concerned about your property, children, and all of such things, you will be afraid when you are taught that you have to benefit all sentient beings. This is why Buddhist scriptures have stated that when the Buddha dharma of Vajrayana is taught, some people will be afraid. When Buddha Sakyamuni taught the Lotus Sutra before, many Buddha’s disciples listened and then left because of fear. Because these disciples did not have the capacity, they would be afraid and were unable to learn this. That is similar to the current situation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has told you to donate and make offerings. Some people will be afraid and start to calculate the money. If I made an offering with one fourth of my salary, then how should I pay for my mortgage? How should I pay for my daughter’s tuition for after-school courses? How should I pay for my car loan? The strange thing is that the more money you give out, the more money you will have. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never thought about what to do after giving out the money. There must be some reasons that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can establish his own business with a diploma of high school graduate and the attitude of not thinking about the money.

In this life, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never asked the family members to be Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s guarantor for borrowing money to do business. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not do these things because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a very simple concept that success should be shared with everybody while failure should be taken by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche alone. You are all doing the contrary thing that success is enjoyed by yourself while failure is shared with everybody altogether. When you do business, you pull all of your family members in; if making money, you will get and use the money first; if losing money, you will just say sorry to your family members. In fact, to let others like you, you have to make them happy first. If they are happy, naturally your obstacles from them will be reduced; later, when you generate Bodhicitta, you will then be able to achieve the vow of Bodhicitta. It will be useless to you if you just think about yourself all day long without considering others. No matter how much you can think for yourself, you will not be able to compete with the thinking of the heavenly gods! Flower Adornment Sutra has made it very clear that the heavenly gods dislike the most a person who thinks and plans schemes for his own benefits all day long. It means that the heavenly gods shun the most a kind of people who constantly scheme for taking advantage of others. Therefore, whether you are at home, doing business, or working in a company, if you scheme constantly for taking advantage of others or have disputes with others, you will suffer seriously in the future and you will not be able to keep your money. Those who often scheme for obtaining other people’s money will definitely have lung diseases such as tuberculosis and lung cancer. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas always give helps and benefits to sentient beings; so they are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Why are we ordinary people? It is because we always take and do not give. We only know how to take; if we have worked a few extra hours this month, we will haggle over our salary; if we have done a little bit more in our work, we will feel that our boss has treated us badly.

There is a story in the Universal Gate chapter of the Lotus Sutra. After receiving an offering from Bodhisattva Akshayamati (Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intention), Avalokiteshvara immediately took half of the offering and made an offering to Buddha Sakyamuni. The percentage of this offering is even higher than the standard of one fourth of one’s money. Why did Buddha teach us such kind of Dharma method? It was because Buddha knew that we ordinary people had very thin and shallow virtues; it was impossible to change our karma without virtues; it was impossible for us to be reborn in the Pure Land without virtues; so Buddha first taught us to give up our money. In addition to money offerings and donations, offerings and donations include charity of Dharma and charity of Fearlessness. A truly great offering is to completely follow and practice Buddha dharma without the slightest idea of one’s own. Hence, an ancient master had said that a Buddhist needs to be somewhat slow-witted. Those smart people tend to be self-righteous and constantly use their ideas to distinguish whether a Buddha’s teachings can give them any benefit. A practitioner of Buddha dharma must be a bit slow-witted. If one lives this life confusedly, one will also live this life happily; if one lives clearly, one will live one’s life in suffering. After we understand this, then it will just be useful for us to recite this dharma text of making offerings and generating Bodhicitta; otherwise, it will just be equivalent to recite a few normal sentences without any effects.

Giving charity is very important. Before we die, if we have not trained ourselves the idea of giving charity or giving up our money in this life, there will be many impeding worries appearing in our minds. For example, you will suddenly remember, “Oh! I should know earlier to give my house to my son to lower the amount of inheritance tax.” Many parents are like this; they fear that their son would not support them, so they do not want to give their property to him before they die. But they have the kind of worry at the time of death because the amount of gift tax and that of inheritance tax has big difference. Buddha has taught us that it is not necessarily a good thing to leave your property to your children. Ancient people and even some people in Taiwan several decades ago really understood this and did not leave a lot of fortune to their children. You have already done enough to raise your children; other matters should be left for him to worry by himself. If one has not trained yourself to give up everything during your lifetime, before you die, many thoughts will continuously appear in the few minutes before you stop breathing. The last thought before you stop breathing will just be the power that takes you to enter the cycles of reincarnation. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not speak about this arbitrarily. All of you should know that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has conducted the Phowa dharma very successfully. During the conduction of the Phowa dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would certainly know the last thought of the deceased person. Many years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped to conduct the Phowa dharma for a female disciple’s husband after he had passed away. The last thought of this person was to worry that he had not told his wife that a bank’s password was hidden in his wallet. If it was not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the Phowa dharma and knew his thought and told his wife about this, the deceased person, after passing away, was very likely to reincarnate as a cockroach or a dog to watch over this wallet until his wife discovered the bank password. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducts the Phowa dharma and the soul of the deceased person comes, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knows his thoughts.

One can imagine that if you are not willing to give up something in ordinary days, for example, you care very much about love and must want your husband or boyfriend to love and cherish you, you will start to think and not willing to die before you pass away. What will happen afterwards? You may become his dog or become his favorite pet. If you come back in the next life, you and he may be in a relationship of father and son rather than husband and wife. This is not that we Buddhists do not care about human sympathy for these matters. It is just that we know clearly that these matters will let us fall into the three evil realms and let us reincarnate continuously. Buddha tell us give as much as we could, except those duty we have to be responsible for. Children come to his family just due to the karmic connection. We pay back what we should pay back and nothing more. It is wrong thought that you would die much better if you have children. Having children sometimes are having more attachment. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw some people who had more children died harder because, among their children, some insisted the Buddhist way, some insisted the Taoist way, and some insisted the tantric methods, and finally they made a lot of quarrels. Another case is some of one’s children insisted western medical treatment while some insisted the Chinese medical treatment. There was also once Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed Phowa for one dead. When his consciousness came to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, he complained he heard of a lot of noise because some of his children insisted the Taoist way for his salvation and the Taoist practitioners made the noise by the Taoist bells. So, having more children is good? Not certainly yes.

The first to take refuge and cultivate mind is to learn giving charity. It’s our duty to take care of our children but do not worry about them too much. It is not need to give them money in order to gain their filial piety. Such thoughts are wrong. Do not think this way either. Even deceiving to get money, I might give them money to run business so that I would have good life when he succeeds. Such kind of parents will fall into the hell eventually. Why? First, he deceives others, who might be the bank, the relatives. Second, you make your children more greedy. Those who have greed will fall into hell. You will fall into hell too because you make other do so. Third, if they fail, they will definitely quarrel with you. They are not filial piety because they have quarrels with their parents, and will fall into hell in the future. And you will follow them to fall into hell too. The human beings are so ignorant. Many people thought it does not matter to lend money from the bank and owe the bank because bank is not an individual human being. But who lend the bank the money? It’s us. Owing a bank is more serious than owing a person. If you deceive the bank, the bank officer who help you the loan will have bad records. You do harms to the officer. Many Buddhist cultivators do not know this relatioship at all.

The most important method of learning Buddhism is to see clearly for everything if you do it with a selfish thought. For example, in these years Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has gotten better conditions so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave more to his mother. His mother would say she only needs the amount of the cost of living and does not need more. However, the intention of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s giving money to his mother is the filial piety and the amount does not really matter. Some elder people still like to enjoy, buy luxury goods, and travel to many places for pleasures. In that way their merits will be consumed very soon. People who are older than fifty must start to try to keep their merits for death. Without possessing merits, you cannot find Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. There was an elder nun of Drikung Kagyu who lived to the age of one hundred and twenty five. She was the Guru of all nuns of Drikung Kagyu and she had attained to the Buddhist achievement of seeing all the causes and conditions in the six realms, namely the karma that brings you to this world. She knows your causes. She had ever said that the merits of people, starting from the age of forty to fifty, would decrease. It is because before your age of forty you were using the merits of past lives. If you have not practiced to accumulate the virtuous conditions before forty, you will then start to lose your merits. Just pay attention to that many people start having some problems in their family, their health conditions, or their job. Many things happen after the age of fifty and it is just because the merits are run out.

Since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taken refugee at his thirties, he kept giving and making offering, so this female Rinpoche said Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s merits is accumulating, and your merits are decreasing. Stop being selfish, do not waste your merits; stop cheating on the band, save your merits up. Why you feel uncomfortable is because you’re merits are used up. This year is the year of Ox, the year of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother. Many people born in the year of Ox had a bad year this year, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother has a great year, because her merits increased while her son’s merits increased. So the year of your own Chinese zodiac isn’t terrible, for example, the year before last year was the year of Horse, in the viewpoint of fortune-telling, it’ll be the worst year for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, on the contrary, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accomplished the great thing of the Grand Puja.

Some people lived about 60 years and still deposit their incoming, reluctant to make giving and offering, even said that they didn’t know they can do things like this, people who said these words show that they didn’t have the intention to do such thing. Why can Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche totally change after practiced the four extraordinary preliminary practices once? It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche generated Bodhichitta, made giving, did repentance and followed the doctrine of Buddhism, so the auspicious sigh showed immediately. Why can’t you, the disciples taken refugee for such a long time, had did the full prostrations, change your evil habits? Without generating Bodhichitta, even plot against others. Don’t think the full prostrations must eliminate karma, without the right heart, you’re just exercising. How to do it right? You should generate Bodhichitta, and take refugee first. Who to take refugee? The Guru, when you take refugee under your Guru, you ignore the teachings of Guru, how could it work? So, there won’t be any blessing if it’s useless, and without blessing can’t you accumulate merits, can’t you convert your karma, and you’ll be still the same.

In 1995, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche needed money to make a move because he owed the landlord for nine months’ rents. At that time, a disciple introduced a person to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped the person one thing, that is, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saw his father had not been transcended, still standing behind him, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche helped him for this. By the time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche needed to move, he made Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a check for 250 thousand dollars without second word. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche moved his house, a few years later, the person’s job was to buy a house and to grant a loan from the bank then sell it out to earn the money from the price difference. So he asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to be the accommodator, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed without second word, and the person asked the disciple for being the accommodator for another smaller house. Afterwards, he couldn’t afford the loan, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche understood that the person really couldn’t afford it, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still helped him for paying his debt to the bank, and still paying now. However, the disciple wouldn’t pay for him, even sued him, reluctant to be in an unfavorable situation. This person saved Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, make Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a place to live, the disciple didn’t know gratitude, sued the person for a little money. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche saved this disciple’s family, but this disciple had no gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s benefactor, is he still a human being? So this disciple’s credit now crashed. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche supporting this house, he had no money, but he had given favor to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would pay back for the favor even chop off his head. All you think the same thought like the disciple, wouldn’t be bully and suffer loses, how can you learn Buddhism with a personality like this? That’s impossible!

Human should be grateful like this; if anyone gives us a little help, we should remember it deeply in our minds. Buddha has given us such a great help, but Buddha only asks us to practice Buddha dharma, asks us to leave the suffering ocean of reincarnations and to help sentient beings again afterwards. Buddha only asks these from us; it is repaying Buddha’s kindness if we can accomplish these things. Even Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have given us such great kindness, as long as we are unhappy for one day, we will put away the statues of Buddha, and abandon our guru. Without a grateful heart, we cannot attain any accomplishment regardless how much Buddha dharma has been transmitted to us. Having a grateful mind, you will not haggle over any bad thing others have done to you; as long as you had been with a person, he definitely had been nice to you in something; this is kindness. A person, who is not grateful, is not generous, and haggles over every ounce, will not be able to generate any Bodhicitta. This house owned by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche now has neither been rented nor been sold; it is used as the home of a few nuns and a few disciples who have poor financial conditions. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still paying the monthly mortgage. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does this because, first, this person had done great kindness to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, giving a Bodhisattva a place to live; and second, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not want the loan officer of the bank to have any pressure. Having done this, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instead has a smoother and smoother life. And you are never willing to lose, how could you become better? Why cannot you generate Bodhicitta? Because you have been accustomed to take, not give since you were brought up. You are doing the same when you teach your children; you cannot tolerate your children to be bullied by others and be scolded by teachers in school. If you do not clearly find out where your problems are and discard all of your evil habits, even if you had been transmitted the four preliminary practices and have completed the four preliminary practices, your life will still not be changed and your karma will still not be eliminated. You have to remember one thing; you are cheated by others today, because you had deceived others in the past; others owe you money today, because you had owed others before. If you accept this, you will be fine and you will be all right. However, you have always not accepted it and the matters coming later will become more and more serious.

Therefore, taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta should not be done only when we read these four sentences before our Dharma practices; we have to truly practice them in our regular daily lives. If your subordinate is disobedient, you should patiently cultivate and train him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had once had two salesmen who could not bring in any business; the company wanted to fire them; but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche personally gave them salaries for three months. Why? It is very simple because if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche supports them, they will definitely help Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche using their utmost strength; furthermore, when other salesmen see such a good boss, they will consider helping him since they are not afraid of being starved by following him. Why in Taiwan many people in construction business, regardless of the type of the construction business, certainly have some of their family members getting some strange illnesses and definitely have a next generation which is not well? Because those people always bullied and took advantage of their construction workers, being stingy and deceiving under all circumstances.

When practicing Buddha dharma, especially now practicing the important dharma in Esoteric Buddhism, if your mind still does not open and your behaviors do not change, you will surely not attain any achievement even if the dharma has been transmitted to you. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche has received a lot of disciples; only one of them, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, is qualified to become a guru. This is not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has done many things for the Drikung Kagyu order; it is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has achieved what H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche has taught and has reached the standard required by Vajrayana which is to generate big minds, to be selfless towards one’s own family members as well as other people. If you have learned this, this will certainly create great changes to you and change your future life. Those who are still selfish, who still calculate their own benefits and blame others all day long will not attain accomplishments even if the Phowa dharma has been transmitted to them today, because the Phowa dharma is a dharma which guarantees a practitioner who attains achievements to be reborn in Amitabha Buddha’s pure land. Amitabha sutra has stated clearly that those who can be reborn there are those virtuous men and women who cannot be lack of virtues, merits, causes, and conditions. This is the standard criteria. Because there are all men of great virtues in Amitabha Buddha’s pure land, how could you be there without virtues? Hence, if you do not practice Buddha dharma from that aspect and only want to ask for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s help and Bodhisattvas’ help all the time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can help you once, but cannot always help you. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will alleviate your emergency rather than your poverty. When you have disasters or difficulties, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will save you immediately. Everything afterwards still depends on your deeds and your practices. If you do not change and learn, if you live you life the same as before and think Buddha dharma has nothing to do with your life, then your virtues will not be accumulated. How will you have blessings without virtues? Without virtues and blessings, you will naturally not attain merits when practicing Buddha dharma. If you do not have enough virtues and merits, you will not be able to go to Amitabha Buddha’s pure land.

Some people cannot practice many dharma methods due to their very old age. However, their respectful minds towards the guru and their reverent minds towards Buddha dharma are big offerings; and they will attain virtues. Once they have attained the virtues, their blessings will arise. So the most important is your mind; the most important matter is whether your mind can correspond with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ minds. If we still do not examine our own behaviors every day or still live our lives confusedly, it would be useless no matter how much we have learned, how much we have listened, and how many pujas we have attended. You have only planted some seeds for some karmic blessings in the human and heaven realms and have just prepared some fortunes for you to enjoy in future lives. However, these absolutely cannot change your future.

Before we invest in practicing Vajrayana, we have to prepare ourselves for giving alms. Do not deposit too much money in the bank, unless these money is prepared for doing a lot of things. If saving money in a bank is for giving you a sense of security, then you do not need it. The real security is not money; the real security is Buddha dharma that can truly help us. Money is from your virtues. How much you had donated or offered in your past lives, how much you will have in this life. Because many people did not know how to offer and give alms, they were willing to spend a lot of money such as five million or ten million for their family member’s diseases; but their family member’s illnesses still could not be cured. If they had a little bit of wisdom and would take some money such as three million to help those who really had no money to afford any medical treatment, their family member’s diseases may get cured; even if the illnesses cannot be cured, at least they will not continue to waste their fortunes like this. There are many kinds of ways for people to die. One kind is that one has no money but still has life; another is that one has money but does not have life. Therefore, there is one kind of people who will die when his money is used up; he will not die before he spends all of his money. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have seen many people like this.

You have to ask yourself whether you can generate Bodhicitta, whether you can truly follow and practice Buddha dharma; the strengths from taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta will then appear. Some people are very smooth in their progress of practicing Buddha dharma while some people have many obstacles. This is also related to taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has almost had no obstacles in the progress of practicing Buddha dharma since taking refuge under Exoteric Buddhism until now, because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has achieved accomplishments in taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has accomplished so, his karmic creditors naturally will not come to impede; even if the karmic creditors would like to impede, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will take away the karmic creditors from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s side.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche had come to transmit a 15-day empowerment before, every day from 9 o’clock in the morning to 8 o’clock in the evening. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had never once been late or been absent. When the first time His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to conduct a two-month retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche went right away without saying any excuse or asking His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to wait until Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche confirmed all the arrangements. Therefore, if you cannot come to the puja on Sunday in the future, you also do not need to ask for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s permission, because those are your excuses. Why do your matters happen on Sunday, not Saturday or Monday? It is because your mind is not firm enough and your practice of Dharma protector ritual every day is not resolute enough; many things will come out naturally to block you.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s philosophy – Buddha-Dharma is the first priority that is much more important than the others. All phenomena result from causes and conditions. For example, if I am fired by my boss because of my going to listen to the Buddhist teachings, it is also my karma. Perhaps my karmic connection with him is over. As for you, however, you take Buddhism cultivation as the fifth priority, while you take money as the first, your wife or children as the second, your reputation as the third, and your time as the forth. With this kind of mindset, can you learn Buddhism and reach to Buddhist practice attainment? Will you gain Buddha’s help? Will Dharma protecting deities come to help you? The answers to all of the above questions is no, as you do not develop a virtuous relationship with them.

Once the supermundane dharma is achieved, there will be no obstacles to the mundane dharma. You have such many problems because you have not practiced and learned the supermundane dharma. Therefore, you just move on according to your karma and cannot change it. The only thing that can change our karma is Buddha-Dharma. The merits of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, at the age of more than fifty, still constantly increase and grow on account of his Buddhist practices and cultivation, his making offering and practicing charity.  If you are still unwilling to place Buddhist cultivation as the top priority, and still regard it is as a form of recreation that makes you feel happy, comfortable and peaceful, you will not have any attainment. The purpose of Buddhist cultivation is to get liberation from the cycle of birth and death. With this goal, one can no more be slack, careless, and sluggish.

One has to recite the “Refuge and Arousal of Mind” prayer before he starts to conduct a Buddhist practice. On the first page the verses are: “In the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha, I seek refuge until attaining Buddhahood, through giving and other virtuous deeds, I aspire to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of the sentient beings.” Take refuge under Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Sangha is translated into sages that include Pratyeka Buddhas and all Mahasiddhas. The reason for one to seek refuge lies in that we need to learn Buddhism through the Buddha’s teachings collected by Buddha’s disciples and orally transmitted by an authentic Guru. Only in thus way can we learn it. Take refuge under the Three Jewels and all of them are indispensable. Now it is popular for the outside people to practice Buddhism and recite the Sutra at home. They may regard the recitation of the Buddha’s name as Buddhist cultivation. However, this kind of concept is not correct. As they only take refuge under Buddha and Dharma, but miss to take refuge under Sangha. Even they have attended the refuge ceremony, without regularly participating in pujas and listening to the Buddhist teachings imparted by Guru over a long period of time, it does not count as a real refuge taken.

As we are born in the Dharma-Ending age, our merits are too shallow to personally see Buddha and obtain teachings from Buddha. Therefore, we have to rely on an authentic Guru to obtain the transmission of Buddha-Dharma. This is the reason that in Tibetan Buddhism, Guru is regarded more important than Buddha. It is not saying that Guru is greater and higher than Buddha. It actually indicates that a Buddha’s statue will not talk to you, only a Guru will. The Sutra will not impart you its meaning even you read it, only a Guru will. Imparting the Buddhism is not the same thing as explaining the meaning. Explanation is to use words to explain the Sutra’s words, but it is not the implication the Buddha imparted. The Sutra is not used for explaining to you with language; Instead, it is implicates the Buddhist practices’ meaning for us. We have to listen to it. What imparts is the wording or the meaning depends on the Guru’s merits.

Guru is extremely important. An authentic Guru does not lie. For example, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tries to tell you about the four stages of the Mahamudra, he would honestly tell you that he has not attained the stages so he can only describe with words; in thus way Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not lie to you at least. However, nowadays, many Buddhist preachers do not talk about it. They only tell you what the Sutra and Shastra talk about. You may get some common sense of Buddhism. However, it is not the actual realm of Buddhist practices. An authentic Guru of Tibetan Buddhism teaches us about the realm he has attained and realized. Therefore, among the four refuge objects, namely Buddha, Dharma, Sangha and Guru, Guru is the most important.

The second verse “I seek refuge until attaining Buddhahood” means that we has to always seek refuge under the Three Jewels before we has accomplished realization. Before getting enlightened, you have to always rely on your Guru who teaches you the Buddha’s teachings and transmits you your Yidam. Do not think you can comprehend and know the teachings after learning for years so that you won’t need to listen to your Guru. Each day before we attain realization we need to account on Guru and Yidam’s teachings. We must not leave from it. Leaving does not refer to actual leaving from the venue. It also counts if your heart leaves. Even, you are leaving if you do something Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not ask you to do, or on the contrary, you don’t do the things Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked you to do. The second verse reminds us that before our realization, we definitely need to rely on Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and Guru’s teachings and help. Only after attaining Bodhicitta does one have the qualification of not taking refuge.

The third verse is “With all the merits and virtues accumulated through the ten thousand practices in the six degrees.” The criterion of making offering is to make it with compassion, asking nothing in return and with no hidden purpose, giving no thoughts for one self. The best practice of making offering is to follow the first thought arisen in you. Many people may copy other people while making offering. For example, they see other people donate ten thousand dollars, so they themselves also donate with the same amount of money. After they make the donation, they regret and take back two thousand dollars. Making offering in that way will not take any effect. As the offering is made with a heart that cares for how much you give, the virtues and merits through it will not manifest and you can only get some tiny merits of human and gods. In Buddhist practices, making offering is the first and the most important practice. Liberate sentient beings according to their conditions is to offer them and do the charity in accordance with their causal conditions. Practice charity with the compassionate heart, giving no thoughts to one’s own advantages and not caring about their status. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not know about many of the attendees’ occupation or wealth status. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just provides his help to them. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche practices charity, it does not matter for them to make a return for it or not.

The forth verse is “I aspire to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of the sentient beings.” Today we made a lot of rituals of offering is to develop our merits. Since only through attaining Buddhahood will I be able to benefit more sentient beings. Simply speaking, realizing Buddhahood is not our goal. Our goal is to benefit all sentient beings. In order to reach the goal of benefiting sentient beings in all space, as it cannot be done with our ordinary body, we have to attain Buddhahood. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to benefit those hundreds of people and also can reach to help the realm of ghost. However, not having attained Buddhahood, not having possessed great merits, virtues, and wisdom as the Buddha, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not able to go to other Buddhas’ land to benefit all sentient beings.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often mentions about why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche needs to perform retreat practices. It is not to gain more magic power or become more talented. Taking retreat is to cultivate Buddhist practices and accumulate merits for sentient beings to use. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche keeps on making offering so as to accumulate merits for sentient beings. You just use your merits for yourselves, by which is against the teaching of the four refuges prayer.

You may speak about the four refuge prayer, but your minds do not reach the state. You have not corrected yourselves. There is one person whose sons passed the entrance examination to Taiwan National University felt it very proud and made it wildly known. In this way he thinks only about his own family members, neglecting the virtues and merits accumulated from making offering for benefiting people. Many people who are the management so self-conceited that they lay off those people they don’t like. This kind of action would actually lead to a waste of the company’s money, as it is costly and uneasy to train a staff. Those managers’ behavior shows that they do not have the heart of giving. They take the credits and lay the blame on their staff. If you do not reform and learn during your daily life, the merits and virtues from your making offering will not manifest.

Many people make offering in a puja. However, are they really willing to offer and give with a sincere heart? A small proportion may be not. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not have sufficient merits, there would not been so many people who make prostration under him! Prior to 1997, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dared not to receive the offering. It was not until that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche allowed dare Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche start to receive the offering. Without merits one should not receive the believers’ offering. As one needs to repay in the same amount as he takes. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not owe you. They will pay you back even for a simple ritual of lamp lighting offering. We need to accumulate sufficient merits for being realized so as to benefit all sentient beings. It is not for accumulating merits for our self. The amount of your possession is already fixed and it is not possible for you to change it, unless you achieve the same religious attainment as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a person who has no desires for wealth or family. All he wants is Buddha-Dharma only. One who attains the states will gain the Dharma wealth rather than the worldly wealth brought from your past lives.

Getting wealth after praying for can be achieved by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, not you. Take an example: Years ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche planned the performance of Vajra dance around Taiwan and prayed to Achi in his daily practice that he could collect funds of USD 200,000 for H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche to build Songtsen Library. It ended up that Richen Dorjee Rinpoche just collected donations of a little over USD 200,000. This story just verified what is written in the Sutra that one gets wealth after he prays for it. Why you cannot obtain? Because you do not practice according to the teachings nor have you ever made offering and practiced charity. Do not think it is making offering by giving Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche a red envelop in every puja. You are just trading for the feeling at ease. The way that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche makes offering is to give all his wealth out. Because of practicing in that way, then Dharma protectress Achi comes to help him and provide the Dharma wealth. The surrounding relatives of Achi helped to find the participants. While the dance had never been successfully performed in Taiwan before, even free of charge, very few people came to see it. However, that time we held it with charge. It also caused a great sensation. Due to the found USD 200,000 collected, the inauguration of Songtsen Library could be smoothly arranged and prepared.

It is not possible for you to pray for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as they are too far from you. However, it is possible for you to pray for compassionate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who will see you through your difficulty. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas exist everywhere. However, not having the same heart as theirs, you are not able to pray for them. The four verses give the meaning that Buddha-Dharma is most important and essential. One has to definitely achieve it. Without real practices it will become nothing but a slogan.

When you were taking refuge, you have been told that do not be angry at your Guru or the power of blessing will be off. The reason is that without Guru’s help, we cannot get realization. Never think yourself that talented. Even the sixth patriarch Hui Neng had to meet with the fifth patriarch before he gained enlightenment. His virtuous root brought from past lives made him comprehend the Vajra Sutra after he read it. But at that time he had not attained the state of great enlightenment. It was after he received the teachings from the fifth patriarch did he gained great realization. Therefore, we ought to recite the four verses for three times before we practice the four preliminary Practices and the full prostrations every day. Contemplate on it for a while after you finish the recitation. It is not requiring you to think its meaning by your human life experiences. Sit quietly for a while with contemplation and observation. If we only read them out without realizing their implication with our heart, it will not take effect. The core of Buddhism, from Hinayana to Vajrayana, is all included in these four verses.

There are three levels of refuge: inferior level, mediocre level, and superior level. We must take refuge before receiving all the Buddhist teachings. Faith also has three different kinds of faith, i.e. pure faith, joy faith and determination faith. Pure faith is when we see a temple, a guru, a spiritual friend, or hear of or read the biography of the enlightened masters, our faith, caused by our pure mind, arises. Sometimes when we see a temple, a guru, or hear of or read the biography of the enlightened masters, we will make ourselves flesh creep and almost shed tears. That is because your memory of previous lifetimes are recalled I this life due to your taking refuge, and thus your faith is re-established again. Joy Faith is we are joyful to do virtuous deeds and eliminate evildoings, to be away from the sufferings of reincarnation, and to enhance our faith in obtain of liberation. Determination faith is we realize nobody except the Three Jewels can give us the capability of obtaining liberation from the suffering of reincarnation. We should realize the compassion, power, wisdom, merits, blessings of the Three Jewels, and therefore we should arouse the determination inside from our mind. This is also the “ultimate truth”.

The “ultimate truth” is the supramundane dharma, not mundane methods. Supramundane dharma is the methods of obtaining liberation from the birth and death, and of being away from the reincarnation. Therefore, Guru Rinpoche ever said that those with devout faith will obtain the blessings continuously, and those with devout faith in Buddhas will eliminate their doubt and will surely achieve accomplishment. You can not attain any achievement because your doubt is too intense. Sometimes you don’t distrust Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and guru, but you doubt that if you could attain the achievement and do it well. When you think to do it well, you are still practice the mundane methods because you look forwards to praises from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Buddha was always telling us that all sentient beings are equal, and all beings have the nature of attaining Buddhahood. The only difference is the time.

It is said in the sutras that virtuous qualities cannot grow in a beings without faith. For example, virtuous qualities cannot grow in animals because they don’t believe in Buddha nor believe that they could attain Buddhhood. Therefore, virtuous qualities cannot grow in them. Beings in the Heaven Realm are very proud and think they achieve practices well. It is like many wealthy people on the earth think they live good life. They also think they have accumulated so many merits that they don’t have to repent nor learn Buddhism. Virtuous qualities cannot grow in such a kind of people that does not have faith but mistrust Buddha’s teachings and themselves. Therefore, the firm determination faith is indispensable. That is, the faith in the Three Jewels and in practicing to attain Buddhahood should be very firm, and have no doubt about these.

The obstacles on your Buddhist path are not from the Three Jewels or your karmic creditors. It is the result from your weak faith. But there is only a fine line between being faithful and being proud. If you are not attentive enough, you most likely would become arrogant to think you are different from others. Therefore, you need a guru to supervise your practice and to instruct you immediately when you cross that fine line. We should believe we could attain Buddhahood because this is the truth Buddha told us. We must believe we could attain the enlightenment as he did someday as long as we follow his teachings. Never be disappointed on your Buddhist path no matter how much offense or obstruction against us because Buddha told us we, each of the sentient beings, would attain Buddhahood someday. With such a firm understanding, you would not lazy in your practice.

Someone asked advice from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not predict his attainment? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche replied Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche won’t predict the attainment as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not a Buddha. Only a Buddha or a enlighten master such as Yunga Rinpoche is eligible to give the prophet.

Among the people that take refuge, the motivation of those of inferior level is the fear of falling into lower evil realms and so the desire of gaining merits of human or heaven realms. This is the refuge of mundane world. Almost 80 or 90 percent of Buddhist cultivators take refuge with such kind of thinking. They all are afraid of falling into hell but on the other hand are not willing to give up mundane thought. They know there is benefit to take refuge so they do it first but do not start the practice at once. At the beginning of your taking refuge, you all wished your health could become better, your wife or husband would become more obedient, your children would get better grade, your business would be more successful. All of these are mundane refuge. The period of such kind of refuge is this lifetime only. And the power of the refuge will vanish when you gain the attainment of human and gods. Nowadays, some temples gather one or two thousand people to take refuge during one refuge ceremony, and some even do it with media advisement. It seems taking refuge is so simple. Actually it is the mundane refuge. Therefore, all they need during refuge ceremony are a statue of Buddha and a few Buddhist Sutras. It is OK that their refuge guru is an ordinary people who do not really realize the causes and origins of the Three Jewels.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s vow is “I would not attain Buddhahood unless all beings have attained that already.” But how difficult it is to attain Buddhahood? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not insist to help you attain Buddhahood in this life, but wish to help you be reborn in the Pure Land of Amitabha or in the Pure Land of Dharma Protector Achi at least, where you could continue your practice till your enlightenment. In Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is to teach the supramundane dharma? If you do not eradicate your evil habits of previous lifetimes by use of the supramundane dharmas, how could you free from the cycle of birth and death? If you do not correct your evil deeds, how could you free from the cycle of birth and death? All sutras said that it is impossible to gain rebirth in the Pure Land with any karma. Even to gain rebirth in the Pure Land of Amitabha, you could do so only with virtuous karma. Some of our evildoings of previous lifetimes that have not been ripen yet could be eliminated by practice the dharma of repentance. Some of them could be eliminated by practice of tantras. But it is impossible by the practices of Exoteric Buddhism.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once saw in a buffet that two ordained nuns talked about the taste of meals and took more quantities of meals they like. Those ordained nuns who still have discrimination in eating surely could not help you in the supramundane dharmas as such attitude of taking refuge is ineffective for obtainment liberation from the reincarnation. There are differences between taking refuge under the Three Jewels and taking refuge under non-Buddhist religions. As taking refuge under the Three Jewels this lifetime, one will hear of the Buddhism again in the future so to gain liberation from the birth and death.

Among the people that take refuge, those of inferior level fear the suffering of reincarnation and long for obtaining self liberation. They take refuge by arousing their faith in the Three Jewels. Therefore those of this level usually are in the Hearer Family or Solitary Realizer Family, i.e. most of them are ordained cultivators. They take refuge from now until they reach the state of full attainment of arhatship. That means before achieving the position of arhat, their vow, intention, and blessings of refuge will not fade away. Among their objects of refuge, their Buddha Jewel is the ahhat of the Hearer Family or Solitary Realizer Family. They don’t recognize the three bodies of Buddhas. They recognize the Sakyamuni Buddha only who attained Buddhahood on the vajra dharma seat. Therefore in the Theravada Buddhism, they don’t talked about Amitabha Buddha, Vairocana Buddha, nor Kasyapa Buddha. They talked about only Sakyamuni Buddha. Their Dharma Jewel is Hinayana. Therefore they mainly practice the Four Noble Truth (suffering, causes of suffering, cessation of suffering, path leading to the cessation of suffering) and the Twelve Nidanas. Therefore, during the time of Sakyamuni Buddha, most of his disciples practiced the attainment of arhatship. It was until the latter part of his life that Sakyamuni Buddha started giving the Mahayana teachings. The main sutra text of Hinayana is Agama Sutra. Those who practice Hinayana have less narrow mind or they are so called so-salvation by discipline. Those who practice Mahayana have wider mind to help sentient beings achieve the state of Bodhisattva. Those practice Vajrayana not only help sentient beings liberation from the suffering but also help them attain Buddhahood. Therefore their mind is much wider. Despite which vehicle we practice, the teachings of HInayana, Mahayana, or Vajrayana are all Buddha’s teachings, so we should not have any discrimination in them. Buddha ever scolded those who practiced Hinayana that they should practice Mahayana, therefore many people who practice Bodhisattva path look down upon those who practice HInayana during the Dharma degeneration age. Such an attitude is wrong. It was because those were scolded by Buddha had the capability of learning Bodhisattva path Although it seems that practicing Hinayana is harder as the cultivators must receive ordination, must cut off affliction, can’t have any family dependants. Actually the practice is easier, compared to the Mahayana. Those who practice Mahayana must have great mercy, great compassion, great Bodhicitta, great wisdom so that they could benefit all sentient beings. Therefore what they offer and give is much more than those of Hinayana.

Why Buddha gave the Hinayan teachings first, not Mahayana nor Vajrayana? It is because of the customs at that time in India. Nowadays, there are still many Indians who wish to achieve accomplishment in their practice so that they would not reincarnate in the future. They know the rebirth is suffering. Such a thought is intense and popular several thousand years ago because as we know there are 4 levels among the Indian people. In the lowest level, their family is the lowest life after lives, therefore their living is most difficult. At the beginning when Sakyamuni Buddha spread his teachings, most of his disciples were from the lowest level. Therefore, Sakyamuni Buddha told them the dharma of liberation from the reincarnation, and they accept the dharma easily.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s vow is to practice Vajrayana. It is not so important to cut off the reincarnation. Instead, it is more important to continue benefitting sentient beings. Many people will fear to hear of this, and do not dare to do it. It is not Buddha who discriminate the three Vehicles. It is the being’s capabilities, karmic relations, and time that the teachings of which vehicle is given.

The stages of refuge: Help sentient beings with condition of compassion and wish to attain Buddhahood for benefit others. Such a cultivation is auspicious. Therefore, they take refuge from now till attaining Buddhahood. Why does Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teach you repent and take refuge every day before attaining Buddhahood? It is because our vow of refuge is different from the two former levels. We should take refuge under our guru, Buddha, yidam deity not only this lifetime but also life after lives until attaining Buddhahood. During many crisis of this life, Richen Dorjee Rinpoche was saved by the guru og previous lifetime. Why did he come to save Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? It is the power of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s taking refuge during previous lifetime. This is the verse “take refuge until attain Buddhahood.” As long as you practice this verse accordingly, your guru of refuge or your first guru of refuge of Vajrayana will look after you all the time. He will help you get over difficulties. When you are the point of achieving higher attainment, he will also come to help you as he wish you could attain Buddhhood.

The object of refuge are the Buddha as the embodiment of the four kayas and five wisdom; the Dharma both aspects of dharma that realize Mahayana; and the Sangha, consisting of bodhisattvas of ten bhumis. The common objects of refuge are the Three Jewels and the inner uncommon objects are the Three Roots. Guru is the root of blessings, the yidam is the root of accomplishment, the protector is the root of activities. Our uncommon inner objects of refuge is the Three Roots of Refuge, i.e. the root guru. It is very difficult for us to achieve accomplishment without guru’s blessings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever asked advice from HH Chetsang Rinpoche if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, being as an elderly person, could attain enlightenment in this rest of lifetime? HH Chetsang simply replied as long as you have firm faith in guru you could achieve this definitely. That is, as long as you have no tiny doubt in your guru, have firm faith in your guru, his blessings could help you achieve accomplishment in this lifetime.

Yidam is the root of accomplishment. That is we will practice one particular Bodhisattva or Vajra Yidam, and follow is vow and activities as our main vow and main activities. Protector is the root of activities. Why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche transmit you the rituals of Dharma Protector Achi after you take refuge? It is because the activities, the activities of Buddhism, the activities of conducting virtues. These Three Roots are indispensable.

Certainly the most precious working basis is the Vajrayana, the Sangha as the pure central channels, and the Dharma as the pure bindu. You should understand these ways of refuge clearly. That’s why you will practice the Lama Chopa right after you take refuge because you need blessings from your guru. Why the Chenrezig practice is imparted? It is because this is the root of mercy and compassion. Why instruct you to practice Achi? It is because of the root of protector. Therefore, these three are indispensable.

Why tell you not to be angry at your guru during the refuge ceremony? For example, you are angry at guru if you think Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche misunderstand you. If you accept Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advices, would you try to explain you are not wrong? It is like Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never gives any explanation about what HH Chetsang Rinpoche said because all what HH Chetsang Rinpoche said definitely is correct. If you were in the same situation, you would have explained that that was not what you thought, Rinpoche you misunderstand me. All of these deeds are being angry. The blessings cut off immediately when you get angry. Not only the blessings from Guru but also from the Three Roots cut off. It is because it is Guru who impart you the Protector Practice and the Yidam Practice. The Dharma Protector would think since you get angry at your benefactor or your guru, are you eligible to practice Buddhism?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche impart the Chenrezig practice. Chenrezig originally was a Buddha, Achi was a Buddha too. When we are mad or have doubt at guru, the relationship of Three Roots is cut off immediately. Since you have taken refuge under guru, your selfish thoughts must be given up. Never have a single thought that you think is correct or right.

If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not possess such qualities, HH Chetsang Rinpoche would not grant Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sitting on the Dharma seat, particularly for a person of Hans lineage. As Drikung Kagyu is a very strict tradition, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sit on the Dharma seat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is propagate the Buddhism on the behalf of Drikung Kagyu HH Chetsang Rinpoche. If you have any doubt or anger at Rinchen Dorjee RInpoche, you will have doubt and anger at HH Chetsang Rinpoche. Because Achi’s vow is to protect the Drikung Kagyu tradition, when you have doubt at HH Chetsang Rinpoche, would Achi come over here? Especially Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a special guru who is trained up by HH Chetsang Rinpoche in person. The relation between HH Chetsang and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is particularly close.

You should understand practicing Buddhism is not difficult, nor hard. But what are the difficulties? It’s very hard for you to uphold your mind. That’s the refuge is talked again in detail today. Do not think your practice so well, and you have corrected your faults. The requirement and standard is very high. The virtues that Buddha said are different from the mundane virtues. Nowadays many masters who do not practice Vajrayana misunderstand many meaning of Buddhist teachings, and practice in the wrong direction. This is really regretted.

After we take refuge, we should understand clearly that Buddha is our teacher, the Dharma Jewel is our path, and the Sangha Jewel, including your guru, is your companion of your practice. Practice these guidelines during your refuge. For example, when a guru is imparting teachings, not only does he bestow upon you the teachings but also does he also practice along with you. In fact, he is enhancing his state of accomplishment at the same time since actually it is impossible to enhance himself without giving. Therefore, a guru who has sufficient merits will gather more and more disciples and bestows teachings continuously. Because he is your companion of your practice, when we practice tantric mantras, we should make the offerings with 3 wheels and body, speech, and mind towards our guru. We also should rely on Yidam and is accompanied with Protector to take refuge.

When a guru bestow upon you tantric mantras, you should make the offerings of 3 wheels (body, speech, and mind) towards your guru. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestow upon you the tantric mantras such as the Mani Mantra, you should pay reverence towards your guru. The Gurus who impart mantras are different from the gurus who transmit the sutra text. The masters of the Exoteric Buddhism cannot help achieve accomplishment in this life either. They only can tell you the philosophy of Buddhism but do not bestow you the dharma of tantric mantras. The guru who practice the tantric mantras possess the accordance with the yidam. Therefore, when he bestows upon you the mantras, the power of the mantras is very strong. As long as you keep good relationship with your guru, the blessings from guru come unceasingly. But as long as you fail to pay reverence towards gur or get angry at your guru, the blessings will cease immediately, and all of your reciting mantra is of no avail no matter how much you recite. Therefore when we learn the mantras, we should be very make the offerings of body, speech, and mind reverently towards guru, and reply on the yidam. For example, when we practice Chenrezig dharma, we should learn the mercy and compassion of Chenrezig at the same time, and learn all of Chenrezig’s acts and thoughts as well. For the moment, when you recite the Mani Mantra, you still have so much greed, hatred, and ignorance. Such reciting does not correspond to the Yidam at all.

You are accompanied with the Dharma Protector, i.e. you should have the Dharma Protector as the companion to take refuge. When we practice the uncommon auspicious tantras or the Vajrayana, we should have the channel as Nirmanatkaya, the wind as the Sambhogakaya, and the bindu as the Dharmakaya. This is the aspects of tantras. When we the ways of taking refuge and are going to take refuge, we should pray for the refuge field. Dirkung Kagyu has its own refuge field. Those who practice well could contemplate the whole refuge field clearly. There is a story about refuge field. Long time ago when a Tibetan was trying to walk through a battle field between two countries, he contemplated the refuge field. And eventually he got no harm at all.

Therefore, you should tell yourselves very firmly Buddha and guru are the most precious ones. To attain enlightenment, we must take refuge without any doubt. Therefore, you should tell yourselves firmly that you must receive the transmission from your guru to practice such as mantras, and are on the path of being a supreme Buddhist disciple. If you fail to do this, you are not a Buddhist disciple.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche presided over an auspicious Chod puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei. At the beginning of the puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche bestowed a teaching on the meaning of “Chod” because many attendees participated in this puja for the first time. In Tibetan language, the term “Chod” refers to the meaning of cut-off. That is, it is to help us to cut off all the afflictions that make us having been reincarnated. Chod was originally comprised by a female Tibetan yogini, Machig Lapdron. When H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche, the root guru of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, bestowed the empowerment of Chod dharma upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, H. H. Chetsang Rinpoche instructed that Chod is one of the eight major Sadhana practices of Esoteric Teaching. The significances of Sadhana practices is by focusing the practicing on Sadhana, one of supreme capacity attain Buddhahood in his lifetime, one of mediocre capacity can accomplish so during his bardo, and one of inferior capability can attain so in next life.

Many people think the salvation can only help those who died. As a matter of fact, all sentient beings in the six realms, alive or dead, are in need of salvation. The word “salvation” is comprised of two meanings. One is to liberate sentient beings from the suffering ocean of reincarnation. And the other means to help sentient beings to arrive the other shore. Reciting sutras by any supporting groups does not really make effective salvation. without being able to bring sentient beings to the pure lands of Buddhas. Only capable practitioners can perform salvation perfectly for the dead. It is just like, in modern time, when you wish to help someone to go to Kaoshiung from Taipei by train, you need to have enough money to buy the ticket for him. Your guru is the one capable of helping you. The meaning of helping oneself and then benefiting others lies in the fact that you have to achieve liberation first and then you’ll be able to liberate others. According to the Five Pure Land Sutras and the Sutra of Amitabha Buddha, between the earth and the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha there are ten thousand billion pure lands. A pure land is in the size of One Billion Worlds (trisahasura-mahasahasra-lokadhatu). Therefore the distance between the earth and the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha can’t be fathomed and calculated by human beings. It’s impossible to complete the salvation by human’s capacity. Only the Buddha Dharma can achieve it.

According to the description of the Sutra of Amtibha Buddha, only those virtuous men and women with sufficient merits, causes and conditions can be reborn in the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. The virtuous men or women do not refer to those people who are doing charities or helping others. These doings are worldly kindness. Actually it is saying those performing the supra-mundane virtues, or the Ten Meritorious Acts. The Act is practicing not killing. Therefore, those who have eaten meat, the practices the Ten Meritorious Acts have nothing to do with them. Many people would believe that as long as someone can recite sutras for the deceased, the deceased can be reborn in the pure land. This is not definitely true. The great virtuous people described in the Sutra of Amitabha Buddha refer to the beings of human realm. The Sutra doesn’t indicate that animals can be reborn in the Pure Land. Nor does the Sutra depict that reciting sutras for the dead animals can help them to be reborn in the Pure Land. Sentient beings in the animal realm are so foolish and ignorant that they aren’t able to listen to and learn the Buddha Dharma. Thus, they can’t be reborn in the Pure Land. The best for them after their death is to be reborn in the Realm of Heaven. All the ordained practitioners here had practiced the Emperor Liang Jewelled Repentance and told others that making prostrations for the deceased with regard to Emperor Liang Jewelled Repentance can help the deceased to be reborn in the Pure Land. The ordained practitioners, however, didn’t realize that even the creator of the Emperor Liang Jewelled Repentance, Baochi Gong, had led people to make prostrations for the sake of Emperor Liang’s concubine and could only help her to gain rebirth in the Heaven Realm from the Animal Realm. She actually was not reborn in the Pure Land. Therefore, many had no ideas that they were indeed lying to people.

It has been quite popular to invite supporting groups to recite sutras for the deceased. Whenever receiving phone calls for help, these groups would rush to the family of the deceased to recite sutras. During the course of reciting sutras, many people are mistaken that the louder the sound the better for the deceased. Two underpinning reasons can explain this phenomenon. First, the supporting groups fear that their mind might become scattered while reciting. Applying loud voice, therefore, can cover others’ voice and they’d think they are better practitioners of reciting sutras. This is the most selfish thought. Those who recite sutras loudly are those who have not achieved the sense of compassion. Secondly, they fear that the consciousness of the deceased has not left the place yet. Therefore, they fear that something bad might happen to them. Their fear causes them to recite more and more loudly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has several times bestowed the teaching that if the family of the deceased can’t find any capable practitioner to recite sutras for the deceased, it’s better for the deceased to hear the reciting sound of his own family. It is because, within the first 49 days after his death, the consciousness of the deceased is still in the intermediate state and would be extremely fearful. The sound of the deceased’s family is familiar to him and therefore he can sense how his family wishes to help him to be liberated from suffering. The consciousness can then be at peace.

Recently there was someone who called to Japan to find Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and asked him to help his mother who just passed away. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not know the deceased; however, while Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was conducting the ritual for transferring her consciousness, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche got to know her son was crying aloud besides her, which made her angry. The sense of the deceased was very keen and their sensitivity is 100 times more than that of ordinary people. Although at that time Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was far away in Japan, but he could get to know it and instructed her son to stop crying. It was not the deceased who told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The reason that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche learned it was that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew the deceased’s suffering. Therefore, salvation cannot just be done by a few ordained people’s recitation of Sutra. Not being able to know the deceased’s last thoughts, the practitioner will not be able to help the deceased.

Some people who recite Sutras for the deceased may sing in a mournful tone, but it may not be correct. Not all the deceased are unwilling to leave. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever transferred the consciousness of the deceased who had been tortured by sickness for a long time before they died and turned to be so happy since after their death, they could finally be liberated from suffering of disease. It is stated in the Sutra that one ought to do Buddhist rituals extensively for one’s deceased family member. The character “extensively” does not refer to myriad or countlessly, nor does it mean to donate money to many charity organizations, go to many Buddhist centers and light the lamps. Its real meaning is that the transferring ritual practitioner must have developed great Boddhicitta.

You ought to attend the puja with a reverence and repentance. Then it would be helpful for the deceased. Some of you may wonder if the deceased of your family members come here or not. You may doubt how to know their coming as you cannot just see them. In fact, you can just tell the Chod can really benefit numerous sentient beings from that the number of the attendees of the puja is increasing and, in the meanwhile, the practitioner is still in good health conditions. It is because if the practitioner were not able to help the sentient beings, although which is not related to you, it would have been related to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Those sentient beings would have stayed here and dunned for it, which may cause harm to the practitioner.

The Chod practitioner must have at least learned the foundation of the Exoteric Buddhism for twelve years, practiced the Four Preliminary Practices for three years, and perfected retreat practices. In previous times, in Tibet, the ordained monks or nuns of the Drikung Kagyu monastery practiced one run of Chod per day. Even more, they would practice one run of Chod in the morning, afternoon, and evening within a day. However, the tradition already faded and the reason is that nowadays very few people can conduct the dharma. There are also very few worthy vessels. Disciples could be divided into three levels: those of high potential, those of middle potential, and those of low potential. Disciples of high potential are able to attain Buddhahood in this life. Disciples of middle potentials would realize Buddhahood in the intermediate state. Disciples of low potential would attain Buddhahood in the future rather than this life. Another reason is that the Dharma instrument made of a human tibia bone is very rare, almost can’t be found. Many people may doubt why in Tibetan Buddhism bones are usually used as the Dharma instrument. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dharma instrument for tantric ritual may be made of human bone. The animal bones will not be used for it. It is not for worshiping ghosts, but for indicating the fact that after death, human are left nothing but bones. Therefore, there is indeed nothing for us to be clinging to. Those bones made for the Dharma instrument have been particularly selected according to specific criteria. The Chod Dharma conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is transmitted from His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. When performing this Dharma, the practitioner would take off all his protective objects on himself, even including the photos of Buddha’s image. Not only the dharma conductor does not protect himself but he also transforms his body into nectar and offers his body for sentient begins to eat. After satisfying their desire for eating, then the Dharma conductor would pacify their hearts and liberate them.

It’s not easy for you to attend this puja on time. The late Mahasiddha Yunga Rinpoche of Drikung Kagyu had ever said that three are ways to accumulate one’s merits fast. The first two methods would not talk today as you cannot achieve them. As for the third one, you can make it. And it is to attend grand pujas. A grand puja does not mean that it has a large number of the attendees, while it is not regarded as a small puja with the few participants. The main point is to see if the puja is attended altogether by the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha with a heart of benefiting sentient beings. If these conditions are met, then the puja could be seen as a grand puja. It is a very precious opportunity to attend thus puja. And it means that you had ever attended this kind of puja in the past time. What is uneasy for you to attend the puja lies in: being hungry and not meeting a traffic jam, you could be on time; not being suddenly asked by your boss to handle business affairs which may hinder you from attending the puja; it is hard to find an authentic Guru who is able to conduct this Dharma; besides, many sentient beings hope to obtain real help and no other karmic creditors obstruct you from attending the puja. Therefore, you ought to cherish the causal conditions as well as what you have. Cherishing what you have is not saying that one has to eat even the rotten food. It is actually talking about that one ought to cherish the conditions bestowed by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for us to cultivate the Buddhist teachings.

Before performing the rituals, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked the attendees to speak out the names of the living and the deceased ones, whom they wanted to help, three times in a loud voice, including the names of their deceased pets. Because many people came to the puja, their karmic creditors would not be able to come receive help if they didn’t hear their own names being called out loud. You do not have to worry about being heard by the attendees sitting next to you since you do not know each other and would not meet with them after leaving the venue. Then, the venerable Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to perform the auspicious Chod rituals.

At completion of the Chod rituals, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again advised everyone not to harm the sentient beings. The so-called sentient beings are beings that have feelings, likes, and dislikes. To carry out virtuous deeds is more than just to make a donation. It is to measure up to the Buddhist teachings. The first act in Ten Meritorious Acts is to refrain from killing. Apart from killing lives, meat eating is one of the major causes of global warming, according to international studies. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche previously gave advice at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Japan that even the western countries are now advocates of the plant-based diet as the earth is getting warmer. Because the conditions of the environment on the earth is deteriorating, adopting a plant-based diet will prevent the temperature on the earth from rising. People who eat meat owe an apology to their ancestors as well as their future descendants. The reason why you owe an apology to your ancestors lies in that many of them are still on earth, unable to be liberated. If the earth gets really warm, they will not have any other place to stay. As to the reason why you owe an apology to your future descendants, they will not be able to survive if you turn the environment into a hostile one. It is stated in the Buddhist teachings that one should refrain from killing lives. When you learn Buddhism, you definitely have to follow what the Buddhist sutras say. When you learn tantras, you should listen to your guru and follow the instructions in the Dharma texts. If you continue to eat meat, please do not come to the pujas anymore. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not allow his company secretary to attend pujas because she wouldn’t adopt a vegetarian diet. The doctors, staff, and patients in a Christian hospital in Taipei are all on a vegetarian diet because they think the vegetarian diet is beneficial to the patients’ health conditions. Even people of other religions adopt a vegetarian diet, not to mention you, who ask for help from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche recounted an incident which took place at the lunch with his employees on his Dharma trip to Japan last week as an example. During the meal, one of Rinpoche’s Japanese employee said that her dog had talked like a human being. People at the table did not believe her, so she imitated the barking sounds that her dog had made. After listening to the sounds, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked her if her dog disliked a certain kind of food which was black, round, and hard and if its hind leg had problems that made it feel painful while walking. The employee immediately nodded in agreement. Since dogs can talk, chickens and cows can do so, too. Don’t the chickens and cows cry out in fear when they are being executed? As fish jump, pigs run, and cows cry tears while being killed, why do human beings eat them? Those who like to eat meat balls will have higher risks of being cut open many times in surgical operations, just as the saying, “Being slashed thousands of times.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has seen many people followed by numerous animals. It is because the consciousnesses of the animals eaten by us might be obsessed with their bodies and hence would not want to leave. Thereby, their consciousnesses would follow us continuously. Do not eat meat anymore so that you won’t be trapped in some bad shared karma. You need to repay every bite of meat. If you don’t kill the lives yourself and have others do it for you, such a deed is even more abhorrent. Do not make your excuse for meat eating or wonder how those meat sellers are going to survive. Don’t worry about this, for it is impossible that everyone adopts a vegetarian diet. All the debts you owe have to be repaid by yourself. It is not the case that you do not have to meet your debts with the pujas you have attended. Even with his attainment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still repaying his debts right now. Inexplicable bleeding or bruising might be seen as accidents by ordinary people. However, from a practitioner’s perspective, losing a single drop of blood is regarded as the manifestation of one’s karmic retribution as well as a debt being paid off. It is a reduced karmic retribution resulting from one’s learning in Buddhism.

Many girls are afraid of being stripped off. If you become sick and stay in the intensive care unit before death, the nurse will strip you off, shave your hair, and insert tubes into your body. These are, too, karmic retributions of meat-eating. Imagine this. Aren’t the animals being stripped off their feathers and scales before they are killed? Some girls spend a lot of money buying cosmetic and skin care products, but do to understand that one’s skin condition will improve as long as he or she adopts a vegetarian diet. Money can actually be saved. Some people are admitted into the hospital many times during their final years. While people might think that it is a health problem, it is actually a debt being collected by one’s karmic creditors.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has repeatedly told us that we should stop eating meat; if anyone of us, whether a disciple or not, continues to eat meat, the person should not come again. One should not think that Bodhisattvas are compassionate so it would be ok as long as we repent after eating meat. There are nearly 1200 people who are attending the puja tonight. When you come, each one of you brings at least ten lives, ten lives of pigs or fishes. Calculating the total number, how many lives do all of you bring to this puja? If you eat meat after the puja, when you come to the Chod puja next time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will have to help you to clean up the killing karma again. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is not a washing machine. Even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche were a washing machine, a washing machine would get damaged after frequent uses. Later, if you are hungry after the completion of the puja, do not go to eat meat; you should also not order a non-vegetarian dish and eat the dish by just taking out the meat, with the excuse that you just eat vegetables beside the meat, not the meat itself. You are not the Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng; you should not think that you can have a diet of eating vegetables in the non-vegetarian dishes. The worst thing is that you miss a meal and can at the same time lose some weight.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother has already been more than 80 years of age. She sometimes said that she hoped she could see her grandchildren get married; sometimes, she said she hoped she could pass away earlier. These are very contradictory. All of you live under an insecure state. There is no religion like Buddhism which can change the future of all sentient beings. Buddhism is not a religion; it should be used in one’s daily life. Practice of Buddha dharma is neither doing morning nor evening practices, doing repentance prostration, and paying homage to Buddha every day, nor conducting week-long meditation sessions. In the current era, one, regardless of a religious or a lay practitioner, cannot practice those for 24 hours. So you can practice Buddha dharma when doing business; working is a practice; bearing a child is also a practice. Do not separate Buddha dharma from your life. It is also Dharma practices for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to do business. The accounting director of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company has come today. Doing business will not affect the things of benefiting sentient beings; practicing Buddha dharma will also not affect your daily life. Therefore, you should adopt Buddha dharma in your life. When you go out after the completion of the puja, you should not change back to the original condition without doing any practice.

Your things will change after you have attended the puja, because Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as your mediators, have told your karmic creditors to let you repay gradually and wait until you have the ability to repay them. This mediation will relieve you from paying the interests of your debt or let you pay by installment, however, you still have to repay the principle of your debt. If you have no job, it is not because of attending pujas, it is because of your causes and conditions. The situation of whether you have a job or not will not be affected by participating in the puja; on the contrary, because you have attended the puja, your future will be changed. Practicing Buddha dharma will never make your happy days go away. In fact, every time when you attended the puja with a reverent and repentant mind, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has helped you to practice the methods of practices such as the Eight Precepts and meditations mentioned in the Buddhist sutras.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has already been more than 60 years of age. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself can still drive. In contrast, some people, when they are 60 years old, have needed assistants from others in order to move. Do not think that you can count on your children when getting old. Children are not dependable now; you have to rely on yourself and rely on Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Do not think that when you die, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will come to help you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche practices particularly on impermanence and thinks that he will pass away at any time; so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is in practice every second. Life is impermanent; do not think that life is permanent and will not change. Many people here believe that they can live to the seventies or eighties years old. As such, we should prepare ourselves and practice Buddha dharma as early as possible so that bad conditions can happen as early as possible and we can pay off our debt earlier; this way, we can then be safe and practice Buddha dharma well for the rest of our lives. If we encounter any bad thing or obstacle, we should bravely determine to use Buddha dharma truly in our lives; as such, we will survive all kinds of difficulties. Those who hope that they will not be involved in bad group karma have to first stop killing, generate a big repentant mind, and do big virtuous deeds. The wish of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is that all sentient beings do not fall into the three evil realms and do not reincarnate again.

During the puja, one believer had yarned. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed if one yarned while listening to the Buddha Dharma, he’ll be reborn in the Realm of Animal next life. Since he had participated in pujas and accumulated some merits, he’ll become a pet. Many attendees wouldn’t show up the next time after being reprimanded by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. They’d think a practitioner shouldn’t be so harsh. As a matter of fact, everything one does in a puja will result in some karmic retribution. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche must rightfully inform attendees the correct Buddha Dharma so that we may not commit any evil conducts. It is also your virtues to be reprimanded and identified your faults by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

While sitting with legs crossed, some attendees would wiggle their legs and their legs might be numbed and feeling sore. Some women are in the habit of controlling others. If they can’t even control their own legs and avoid numbness and soreness, how can they control other humans? Having sat at the throne for several hours, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche hasn’t moved his legs, nor has Rinpoche wiggled the toes. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has an S-shape spinal curvature which condition should not allow Rinpoche to perform seated meditation. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can not only sit upright but also perform seated meditation.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave enlightenment to 110 believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei.

May 30, 2010

In the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Taipei, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not ascend the Dharma seat. All the attendees, including disciples and believers, quietly sit there, reciting mantras in a low voice or contemplating one’s faults.

Prior to puja’s beginning, one female disciple went up and spoke to repent. Besides, she also shared the story that her sister’s mother-in-law got the help of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

“If you have not acquired the disease, you would not have had the fortunate chance to meet me.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said to her when she was still a believer. Indeed, before she was found to contract the liver cancer, she led a very busy life, serving as a teacher who needed to give lessons, prepare for lessons, write thesis, give her students advices, solve problems for her colleagues and friends. She was regarded as a good person, and so did she think she was. Although she had already taken refuge under Buddhism, she just took it as a comforting medicine at her gloomy or depressed time. After attending many pujas and religious camps, in the hall of temple, she was only one element of all living beings. Looking at the Dharma master from afar, she knew that she needed a teacher who could understand her and lead her. She also knew that she was weak, so she needed a powerful strength to help her. So she prayed before Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Falling into sickness totally changed her life plan. She was grateful to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for letting her meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche when she was ill. Listening to the Dharma recorder, she was led to see her greediness, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and delusion. She also realized the power of karma. In July 2009, she took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Being blessed and protected by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mercy and compassion, she safely passed through the time of suffering from disease and entering in and out the hospital. The power of compassion let the patient whose brain was already severely full of cancer cells could still live a normal life, even being able to go outside to handle personal business. She even followed with Guru to Japan to attend puja for three times. In the medical views, this could be seen as a miracle.

What she wanted to repent was that although Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche gave her buffer time, she did not seize the time to diligently cultivate Buddhism. She was still reincarnated in greed, hatred, and delusion, and stuck by her own heavy habitual patterns. Except for crying in the puja, the true repentant heart had not yet arose in her. Guru instructed us to apply the Buddha-Dharma into our daily life, but she still continuously made mistakes. Taking the suffering of disease, she learned the karmic strength. But she could not face it and accept it. She only hoped to recover and return to her original job. Thus she still lived her life with cravings.

The disease of one’s body cannot be eliminated before the disease of one’s mind is eliminated. Every week she listened to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s teachings in the Buddhist center. But she would forget it after returning home, and also did not act in accordance with the teachings. “Stop all evildoings, do all virtuous deeds.” The word “stop” literally means to cut off, to cease, but it also implicates to be firm and decisive. If one could not be determined, one would live in the suffering forever. “Correct slowly” would become the common excuse, as well as the weasel words for the lack of determination. As the human body is hard to obtain, the Buddha-Dharma is hard to hear, and the Guru is hard to meet, there is no time for me to slowly correct myself. I have immense gratitude to compassionate Guru for bestowing me the opportunity to speak to repent in front of you, my Dharma brothers and believers. I, as a disciple, am willing to cultivate Buddhism with a sincere heart, act according to the Buddha’s teachings, and follow Guru life after lives. I’m thankful for Guru’s compassionate teachings, leading, and blessing.

She then shared what happened to her first younger sister’s mother-in-law.

Her sister’s mother-in-law was admitted into the hospital due to breast cancer and kidney failure and her condition continued to deteriorate. When her sister returned to Taiwan from mainland China, she spoke of her mother-in-law’s medical condition and got really worried. As the disciple had nectar pills revered on the altar, she then asked her sister to take one for her mother-in-law. When her sister arrived at the hospital, her mother-in-law was unable to eat any more except for water. Her sister then put the nectar pill in the water and pour it in the patient through the nasogastric tube.

That very night, at 3 am on May 2nd, her sister and her husband received a call from the hospital telling them that her mother-in-law had passed away. When they rushed to the hospital, they saw that her mother-in-law’s rosy complexion and serene look. Her sister’s husband even said that he had never seen her mother with such a peaceful look. They knew too well that it was the auspicious blessing of the nectar pill. That Saturday, they went to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Besides showing their gratitude to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, they also implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to transfer the deceased. At once, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche agreed to help transferring her, and told them to attend the Chod puja.

On May 16, a public memorial service for her sister’s mother-in-law was held. During the cremation, the family members were in extreme grief, especially her sister’s husband. He almost collapsed at seeing his mother off to the cremation room. Because the family had decided to practice tree burial, the funeral parlor asked the crematory in advance to grind the bones into powder. Nevertheless, when the cremation completed, the crematory sent out bones instead of powder. The staff of the funeral parlor thought the crematory was to blame, but the later claimed that they had never received such notification. The staff of the funeral parlor felt powerless. However, when he saw the cremains, he shouted out, “Sarira flowers. There are Sarira flowers in the cremains.” Sarira flowers in blue and yellow can be seen attached to the bones. Her sister and her husband had known nothing about Sarira flowers. Never could they imagine that their mother, who had eaten so much meat and had not recited sutras or done prostrations to the Buddhas, would have Sarira flowers in her cremains. Upon seeing such an auspicious sight, their grief was relieved and replaced by immense emotions that were beyond expressions. They knew that their mother had gone to a good place.

This is a true account of what happened to her sister’s husband, who usually kept himself away from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. That the bones had not been ground seemed to be a specially-arranged wonder demonstration. The family was then enabled to experience the unbelievable power of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mercy and compassion during their senior family member’s final moments.

And then another female disciple followed to make her public repentance in front of the dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She has not thoroughly repented her misconducts and not followed the teachings of the Buddha Dharma. That’s why her family has not started to learn the Buddha Dharma with her. Her parents-in-law live in Chia-yi by themselves, her husband works in Mainland China, and she and her children lives in Taipei. About two weeks ago, her husband called and told her that the blood pressure of her mother-in-law had risen to above 200 everyday. This situation had continued for a week. Her sister-in-law had brought her mother-in-law to see a doctor who had prescribed some medicine to reduce the blood pressure. It worked every day after her mother-in-law took the medicine. But the next morning, the blood pressure still rose to more than 200. Finally, even the doctor couldn’t prescribe any medicine to help. Hearing that even the doctor was not able to alleviate the blood pressure worried her elderly parents-in-law. It was not until the doctor had run out of all medical solutions did her husband inform this news. Her husband knew that only her Vajra Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, can help her mother-in-law.

She told her husband to calm down first. Then she immediately went to make prostrations in front of the dharma photo of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The next day, she mailed a nectar pill and Pu-er tea to Chia-yi for her mother-in-law. A few days later, she called her parents-in-laws to inquire the condition. Her father-in-law joyfully told her that the nectar pill is a panacea. After taking the nectar pill, the blood pressure had remained around 140, which is a normal level, and her spirits were also in good condition. The moment she heard the description of her mother-in-law, her tears was rolling down her cheeks. She knew that her family and her own incapability had once again burdened His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Without the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, even if she took a leave from her work and went back to care for her mother-in-law, she really could do little to help the illness. Moreover, because of the blessing of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, she can have enough merits to listen to the teachings of the Buddha Dharma every Sunday at the center. This disciple is extremely grateful to His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for Rinpoche’s care for her family. She prayed for the happiness, longevity, safety and health of Vajra Guru Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, and wished the dharma wheel will turn forever. May Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche permanently live in the world.
