Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company.

July 5, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja and the refuge ceremony to accept 41 believers as disciples at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: The rituals of the refuge ceremony look simple but yet have profound meanings. People think that their body is their own and very important. Every second they care about their own body so that they have the thoughts of benefiting themselves. Actually from Buddha Dharma’s point of view, human body is the body of karmic retribution. The reason why one obtains a human body in this life is because one had practiced the Ten Meritorious Acts very well in one of the past lives. Therefore if one has not practiced the Ten Meritorious Acts well in this life, one cannot be considered as a human being even though one has a human body. One as a human being in this life would not be a human being again in next life. Ninety-five percent of human illnesses are caused by the karma of past lives.

The first condition of being a human is no killing. Eating meats is a killing. Some people may say that they did not make the killing personally. However, the sin is more serious if you have others kill for you. If not being a vegetarian beginning from mother’s uterus, one has already started conducting evil karmic deeds since he lived inside one’s mother. Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, Taoism all has the precepts of not eating meats, too. The high divorce rate of nowadays is related to killing karma: kill the male pig so that it was taken away from its female pig; kill the female pig so that the young pigs have no mother. The effect of such killing would be that one is separated from his family members. Having a scratch on the skin, shedding a drop of blood are all resulting from killing.

No stealing. We must not take any thing that does not belong to us. It is very easy for us to commit this misdeed. No matter working in the public authority or private enterprise, it is considered stealing even just taking a pen or a piece of paper for one’s own use. Buying illegal copies of CDs or imitation brand bags is stealing. Redistributing commercial computer software is stealing too. Plucking flowers outdoors as one pleases is also considered as stealing. All things have their owner. There was someone who picked stones by the river and had subsequently acquired strange illness. It was because the dragon lived on the rock and the dragon took the revenge on him. Ancient people ate fishes and meats only a few times a year. They usually ate foods like vegetables or tofu, unlike the people nowadays who eat great amount of fishes and meats everyday. This is the reason why the divorce rate is so high now. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was living in Hong Kong, there were people who wanted to sell Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sapphires at the price of ninety percent cheaper than the market price. Though the quality of these sapphires was extremely well and the price was so low, buying these sapphires could definitely make lots of money. Yet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that these sapphires source was questionable. They were stolen by the joint efforts of the employees of the foreign companies to the mining areas. The seller guaranteed that these sapphires had been sold to several buyers, no billing invoices would be issued and therefore no one would know who the buyer will be. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has observed the Ten Meritorious Acts and therefore will not help anyone to break the precept of no stealing. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche shall never buy them. Even though someone says that there will be other person to buy them if you don’t, but that’s his business. If in this life one frequently loses his stuff, or is cheated to lose his money and unable to get the money back, these are all because of stealing in the past lives. Some people are very rich and yet they still try to gain petty advantages. It was resulted from the bad stealing habits from past lives.

No harsh speech. Do not say anything that will upset others. If we see the spouse of our friend standing on the street or having a meal with an opposite sex, we shouldn’t talk to our friend about such an incident. Whether the couple will break up or not is utterly their business, and there is no need for us to take part in this evil condition. To observe no harsh speech, it is more than just refraining ourselves from scolding others. It is about our mind. If we have hatred in our heart, we will definitely say harsh speech and thus bring harm to others. Nowadays people thought that they refrain themselves from harsh speech as long as he doesn’t scold others. Additionally, they are even told to recite the name of Amitabha Buddha as soon as they feel like scolding someone. Since when has the name of Amitabha Buddha been turned into an expression of reproving? If one recites the name of the Buddha while having hatred in his heart, he will still be committing an act of saying harsh speech. If one has learned to practice the heart of mercy and compassion, he will naturally stop saying harsh speech. Besides, if one says that another person has severe karmic obstacles, such expression will be regarded as harsh speech, too. None of us are qualified to tell other people that they have heavy karmic obstacles. Only a guru is eligible to say so.

No slandering. Those who work for large enterprises often hear tales from people coming to chat with them. Besides refraining ourselves from criticizing others, we should say, “Sorry, I’m awfully busy,” to these people, thereby stopping them on our initiative from slandering. One shouldn’t even listen to them while making sounds in response. One not only should refrain from poking his nose into other people’s secrets but should also avoid overhearing such affairs. In addition, we ought not to criticize the politicians. As stated in the sutras, one should not say harsh speech about the rulers. It is even inappropriate for us to say harsh speech about these people while they are seen on TV. The reason lies in the fact that we voted for them ourselves. Even if we didn’t vote for these politicians, we will still have to share the karma with everybody else at least. The corrupted politicians are present because people are greedy in their hearts. That is why we have such people showing up during the time we live. We should show our repentance for not being born in a good time.

Before achieving the position of a Guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once met a female Buddhist learner who had an affair with a married man. She found herself pregnant and eventually called Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to ask for his advice on the matter. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then advised her to be responsible for her own conduct, and to deliver, care and educate the child well. Additionally, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told her not to bring harm to other people’s family. The lady then cried her heart out, saying, “If you had scolded me for my misconduct just like other people had done, I would have committed suicide.” All the other Buddhist learners scolded her with Buddhist teachings and said that she had violated the precepts. Although these people talked about the Buddha Dharma talk, they caused harm to others, which could have taken two lives. Therefore, we have to be very cautious.

No frivolous words. In Exoteric Buddhism, no frivolous words are to refrain from telling dirty jokes or any expressions that might evoke others’ desires. While having a relationship with an opposite sex, one should not make commitments which he doesn’t want to fulfill or intend to do so in the future.

No lying. In addition not to lie or deceive others, one should not make a promise easily. One should achieve what one has promised. One should not make up anything that doesn’t exist or deny anything that is actually present. Additionally, if a Guru meets a disciple of capacity, the Guru must not deny his own holding of the practices while he indeed has them.

No committing adultery. Monogamy is not advocated in Buddhism, but in Catholicism and most modern cultures. No committing adultery is to refrain from having intercourse with any female in suffering and sorrow, with any married male or female, or even with anyone who is kept by a guardian or a patron. The reason lies in the fact that this kept woman owes her patron. Although it can’t be said that she uses her body to repay her patron, at least she will have to respond something to the man. Therefore, if one has intercourse with this woman, she will owe the man and thereby have to repay his favor life after lives. What’s more, one should refrain from having intercourse with any animal, with any ordained male or female (much worse with an ordained female in particular), and with any member in one’s family, such as his own mother. As to same-sex sexuality, although it is considered committing adultery in Exoteric Buddhism, one who has a heart of repentance can still be accepted and take refuge to learn and study Buddhism in Vajrayana. The females who consider themselves males are actually suffering the result of their evil karma from their strong desires in the previous lives. If one has made money by using the bodies of other women, he will be born with a paṇḍaka’s body and become a eunuch, an ancient term for a transsexual individual in nowadays. For example, there are a lot of males in Thailand turning their bodies into female ones. They thereby have life-long worries about their bodies and spend every penny of their income on hormone injection so as to maintain their female body. In the Ksitigarbha Sutra, it is stated that those with strong desires will go to the hell after they die. When conducting the tantric practices, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was finally able to realize and confirm this statement, which is related to Tsa Lung Trulkhor. The reason why people would have renal problems lies in the fact that they committed adultery in their previous lives.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche once had helped an ordained male who had suffered from an illness of spermatorrhea and whose sperms would involuntarily emit when coughing. The illness couldn’t be cured by any medication nor by any Dharma practice. At his request for help, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that when he traveled to Germany, he had sexual relationship with a local woman but he did not resume his secular life. This behavior meant he had committed adultery; therefore a female ghost of medieval Europe had followed him. After Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted a Chod puja for him, he was eventually recovered. There are no treatment methods, especially in modern western, medicine, for this disease. Therefore, one has to correctly tell in front of his Guru, Buddha and Bodhisattvas that he is going to resume his secular life, and so as not to transgress the precepts.

No greediness. During last year’s financial storm, lots of people lost much money and it was resulted from people’s greediness. Instead of earning money by one’s own labor, many people invested their money in mutual funds, thinking to make money through others, by which they committed stealing. Because of no greediness, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never invested in mutual funds, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was not affected by the financial storm. In fact, such kind of investment had violated the precept of no stealing. In stock market, one’s profit is someone else’s loss. It is all right if you invest stocks as stockholders to earn dividend. So you can invest stocks without gambling, but sometimes there would be a slump in share prices. Sexual craving is another kind of greediness.

No hatred. Have no malice to anyone. You should not hate even your break-out lover. One’s face would look not good when he bears hatred to other people. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has never hated other people. Instead of harboring bitter resentment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche smiled and let it be after being harmed by other people. Never having a grudge againt anyone, and hence, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has such a appearance that people want to get closer with.

The tenth act of the Ten Meritorious Acts is no delusion.

The view of Buddha Dharma is a macrocosm view, not a narrow one. For example, the nebula, the celestial bodies in the Universe moves just as the Seed Syllables are contemplated to be distributed counterclockwise in their order, and spinning clockwise. Their practice would not take any effect for those who have not attained the conditions of being a human. The Ten Meritorious Acts is most basic. As one practices the Ten Meritorious Acts well, the merits and virtues will engender, and then there would be less obstacles for him to learn and to practice no matter what.

The anima sign of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother is Ox. From last year, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already known her mother would meet some problems in this Ox year, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche departed to Hong Kong in this April to take his mother back to Taiwan. At that time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother had some health problems due to that she had a cold and took wrong western medicine: she had no strength of her arm to have food and the saliva was exuding from her mouth while eating; she had a difficulty in walking; she had no sensation of her one leg falling out of the bed while sleeping at night and did not have enough strength to drag her leg back; the symptoms of senile dementia appeared on her, too. All those were the omens of death. However, after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took her to Taiwan first, then brought her to Japan and finally sent her back to Hong Kong in June. During this period, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let her take Chinese medicine as well as conducted Dharma for her. Merely by that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother recovered completely in just more than a month, from April to June, and also returned to Hong Kong smoothly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother has endured everything happened to her in all life, talked only on the good sides of her husband and even never been angry with her husband’s love affair outside marriage (as her husband looked like Mei, Lan-Fang) or scored, made harsh speech. Her husband had already passed away, but she has still talked about the goodness of him nowadays. So now, at her old ages, her children are showing filial obedience for her. This time, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was very sad to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother suffering illness and sorrow in aging change. On the other hand, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was glad for that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother had already paid off the effect retribution of delusion in this life.

One ought to be clear about what he shouldn’t do after taking refuge, and therefore he would have virtues to solve difficulties that he meets. By practicing the Ten Meritorious Acts, you would know your faults. Lay the foundation firmly, and then the future practices would be much easier. “The virtuous men and women“, depicted in the Sutra, indeed refers to the men and women who practice the Ten Meritorious Acts. To obtain rebirth in the Pure Land of Amitabha, one also needs to practice the Ten Meritorious Acts. When all of you practice the Ten Meritorious Acts and not do evildoing, and you will also have an influence on the others that they would not do evildoings, by which is more effective than you donating money. All kinds of religions persuade people into doing virtuous deeds but not tell it so completely as what has told in the Buddhist teachings on “Virtuousness”.

Our body of karmic retribution was born through the combination of the father’s sperm and the mother’s blood. Parents gave us the body, but cannot change our karma or affect the emergence of our future karmic retribution. This body is not eternal; after this life ends, we will be dragged by the karma and be reborn in reincarnation of the six realms. It is our Buddha nature which is eternal and truly exists life after lives. Taking refuge is so precious like that our dharma body is reborn in this life. If we do not practice Buddha dharma, we can only be rolling and tumbling in the ocean of karma. After taking refuge, we will obtain the teachings of Buddha dharma blessed by the Guru, Buddha, and Bodhisattvas; this let us have the chance to seize this life to practice Buddha dharma and leave the ocean of karma as soon as possible. If there is no Buddha to help the emergence of our dharma bodies, we will not be able to leave the ocean of karma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche should have been short-lived; but through guru、 Buddha and Bodhisattva’s teachings, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been exerting himself to practice Buddha dharma and to change Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s future. The key point is to be obedient.

One can get eight advantages by taking refuge.

(1) Becoming a Buddhist. A Buddhist is not a disciple of Buddhism, but a Buddha’s disciple taught by Buddha. If there were no practitioner who could represent Buddha to propagate the dharma, it would be impossible for one to practice Buddha dharma. One should have strong faith in the Three Jewels and not think that there will be any negative matters occurred due to taking refuge. One should have complete faith in the Guru and not be afraid.

(2) It becomes the support of all precepts. Although many people are vegetarians, their bodies still have a pile of problems. This is because they did not have the support for the precepts and they just adopted the vegetarian diet as cattle and sheep. After taking refuge, for each precept you observe there will be precept gods and dharma protectors to protect you.

(3) All non-human beings cannot hurt you. After taking refuge, you will have good gods and dharma protectors to protect you, even the ghosts who hate and hold grudges against you cannot harm you; unless you break your precepts of taking refuge, you will not be able to see any ghost. If any disciple says that he saw any ghost, this means he has broken all his precepts and this also means that he did not believe in the Guru.

(4) All sin and karma can be reduced or even eliminated.

(5) Accumulation of virtues and merits in one’s heart increases to a vast amount. Before taking refuge, one will be hesitant even about doing good deeds. It is just like the disciple who shares her story today; she did not take refuge at the time when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche instructed her to have a vegetarian diet and to give money to those who are in need of money for medical treatment. But she had had no faith in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s enlightenments. They did not listen to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and even continued eating meat. If she had listened and did those things, she would not suffer from the pains of assisted conception and the later miscarriage, and she would not have spent that much money, either.

(6) One will not fall into the three evil realms after one’s death, the animal realm, the ghost realm, and the hell realm. For this, one must still observe all the precepts of taking refuge and be respectful to the Guru and the Three Jewels.

(7) Give arise in one’s mind to the auspicious path of Buddha dharma. The auspicious thought could not arise without Guru’s blessings.

(8) One continue to practice Buddha-dharma until attaining the unsurpassed enlightenment.

One needs to be careful about the following things after taking refuge.

(1) One should not pray and prostrate to heavenly gods. After taking refuge, you will have the virtuous gods and dharma protectors of Buddhism around you; so do not go to any non-Buddhist temples to pray for anything. Generally, a better situation is that the spirits in the temple are ghosts with some virtues; otherwise, they are the ancestors, or at a worse level, the wondering ghosts. If you still go to pray to those ghosts after taking refuge, those ghosts will ignore you since you have taken refuge; and you will break your precepts of taking refuge. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has once met a rich person. He went to a non-Buddhism temple and prayed for the smoothness of his construction project. After he got what he prayed for, he then donated millions of dollars to the temple. However, it was not the ghosts of the temple that took the money. Therefore the ghost got its payback by sucking the prayer’s energy and consuming his virtues. After taking refuge, even if you would like to make obeisance to your ancestors, you should not pray to your ancestors. This is because first you will break your precepts of taking refuge and second you will let your ancestors not be able to get into the cycle of reincarnation. The spirit of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s maternal grandfather, after he passed away, was very efficacious and would appear when someone in the family was sick. Before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s father passed away, the grandfather’s spirit had also appeared for a few days. Even the grandfather’s spirit knew what would happen; the spirit sill cannot do anything to help. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, when he was young, followed his father to learn Taoism. At the age of ten, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could cure diseases by drawing charms; help to remove a fish bone choked in a person’s throat, and help to stop bleeding, etc. Thus Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had been taken as a child prodigy. But, at the age of 18, from the death of Rinpoche’s father, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realized that Taoism is not the path for understanding the absolute truth, so Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche packed up all the items of Taoism and never used them again.

(2) “Never kill the living beings”. Aborting a pregnancy means killing it.

(3) “Never rely on non-Buddhism”.

(4) “Revere the Three Jewels”. It is impolite for some of you to point at guru and Buddha statures. Tibetan people always show their respect by holding their palms up to introduce guru and Buddha statues.

(5) “Never get rid of your refuge precept because of your own sake of convenience to any particular things”. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has kept the precept and displine strictly since the moment at taking refuge. Once at a moment when making a deal with a man, the man asked the Rinpoche who had not yet enthroned as a guru to drink a glass of wine as a criterion to sign the contract. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche refused it in order to keep Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s precept. The man recognized that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was of principle and then signed the contract. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took a disciple for an example, who shared her stories of finding a job before the commencement of today’s puja. The disciple honestly wrote down the facts of her miscarriage in her resume and she was accepted by the company eventually.

(6) “Be sure to make your offerings all the time”. It includes the support to this Buddhist center even though donating one dollar when you are running out of money. The concept is you ought to pay for what you use. When His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche assigned Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to reconstruct the golden root of the Drikung Thil Main Monastery, the Rinchen promised right away but had no idea where the fund was. In order to achieve it, Rinchen Dorjee Rionpoche sold a set of favorite antique furniture and made his offerings with the most precious treasure. That kind of classic pieces of furniture had not been encountered for more than ten years. That is, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always makes offering with the most previous ones.

If you do any one of the followings, the blessings would not be bestowed upon: making argument to your guru, unwilling to accomplish your guru’s assignments, lack of esteem toward your guru, lack of praise to your guru, neglecting or humiliating the Dharma protectors, unwilling to propagate your guru’s merits and virtues, unwilling to visit your guru, and having anger to your guru.

There was a disciple who did not attend the puja but went to shoot a documentary film in earthquake area. He still thought that he had made virtuous deeds. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would not allow him coming back to the Buddhist center for his misconduct and misthinking, unless he takes refuge again. However, his request of taking refuge will not be certainly granted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche if he really wants to do it.

There is a disciple who had seldom been close to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and was satisfied with his own daily conducts. He once clearly saw that the Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was sitting at next table in a resturant. However, the disciple was worried about paying all the fee of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and the people who had meal with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche; he was meant to make offering and even did not come to say anything. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche understood his thinking and said to the people who had meal with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that if we paid the bill and the disciple would see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche afterwards. Just as expected, the disciple showed the surprising appearance to recognize Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche all of a sudden after they paid the bill. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that this disciple did not possess the heart of making offering. He could come over and said directly that he only would like to make offering to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche except of buying other people’s bill. The disciple was not permitted to make offering forever as a punishment and not permitted to participate in oversea activities.

Practitioners are surrounded by many dharma protectors. Some protectors are secular dharma protectors with thoughts and natures of human being. If they see a disciple who is angry with his guru, they will make you something happened to warn you. It does not matter for anyone who dislikes his guru or venue can leave happily. To say that I like my guru, but I dislike some people who surrounds guru which is a very evil mind. We should not say so.

As stated in the Sarvâstivāda Sarvabhava Vinaya-sutra, his Guru might be able not to treat a disciple with five: no talking, no teaching, no sharing, no allowing his doing good, and no entering in the same room with him if he commits such the following misdeeds, including disbelieving in the law of cause and effect, being lazy, saying harsh speech (especially to dispraise his own Guru), being shameless (making the same error again and again), being close to evil friends (those who are not necessarily to be non-Buddhists; those who make you feel that liberation from reincarnation is not needed), his Guru may treat him with five: no talking, no teaching, no sharing, no allowing his doing good, and no entering in the same room with him.

Afterwards, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche conducted the ritual of taking refuge for 41 believers. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that in the middle shrine of the Mandala, the Buddha Shakyamuni is worshiped in the middle, to Buhdda’s right being Vajrasattva, to Buddha’s left being Guru Rinpoche who is so important to spread tantras to Tibet; in the middle of right shrine was Four-armed Avalokitesvara (, who represents mercy and compassion), to his left being Vajrapani Bodhisattva (, who represents bravery and diligence), to his right being Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva (,who represents) wisdom. With compassion but without wisdom, one would become a yes-man; with wisdom but without compassion, one would be arrogant. Besides, a disciple should have the heart of bravery and diligence to learn Buddhism and to benefit sentient beings. On Saturday (yesterday) Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received and helped believers continuously for five hours without going to the restroom, only drinking a little water, demonstrating the heart of wisdom, compassion, and diligence. In the middle of left shrine was the founder of Drikung Kagyu Lineage, Jigten Sumgon; to his right being the common Protector of all the four major Tibetan Buddhist Schools, Mahakala; to his left being the uncommon dharma protector of Drikung Kagyu, Achi. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened, moreover, that cutting a few hairs for the attendee who took refuge meant to cut off all vexations. This would sow the seeds of Renunciation in the future for him or her. This did not mean to cut off hair and to leave home, but to leave the home of cyclic existence. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened the prostrating gesture in Tibetan Buddhism: with the two palms together, cupping a little, and folding the thumbs a little, expressed one holding up the most precious jewels to make offerings; connecting the bottom of palms together expressed that one would not fall into the three evil destinies; touching one’s forehead, throat, and the middle of chest in sequence, and kneeling with both knees, both elbows and forehead on the ground expressed that he venerated his Guru and subdued his heart of arrogance, and he made offerings with his body, speech, and mind, in addition to subdue the five poisons and to transform them into five kinds of wisdom.

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and enlightened the importance of the “Four Immeasurables”. Many refuges in the general refuge ceremonies accord with the conditions. That is, the refuge master does not need to be responsible for disciple’s liberation of life and death. The so-called “going along with the sentient beings” does not mean to follow sentient beings’ wishes and thoughts, but instead to follow their causes and conditions. The disciples would not possess the favorable conditions if they do not listen to or what guru instructs or do not act as instructed. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche has ever enlightened that reciting sutra is not considered as practicing Buddhism. Reciting sutra or mantra is simply one of the processes of learning Buddhism. The most important thing is to completely change one’s heart. Otherwise, the karma still can not be changed no matter how much prostration has been made everyday.

Those who have abundant wholesome roots will arouse great reverence and therefore receive blessings when they meet the masters or see the things that these masters had used before. In year 2007, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever performed the retreat in Nepal at the place where Jetsun Milarepa ever performed retreat before. After the perfect completion of the retreat and the followed fire puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, instructed by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, went to the monastery to see the precious relics of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, including one boot of Mahasiddha Naropa’s and one boot of Mahasiddha Marpa’s. To make the prostration, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held Naropa’s boot in his left hand and placed it on his head, and then placed Marpa’s boot, held in his right hand, on his head. Immediately Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s skin crawled and his tears running all over his face, signifying that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has abundant causes and conditions with the Mahasiddha Marpa of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had ever asked His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche the reasons why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained the accomplishment of Phowa. For example, why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche could summon the deceased to his front and knew what the deceased thought. His Holiness enlightened that it is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has accumulated abundant wholesome root in the past lives, has been obtaining precepts and practicing energetically, and has been being loyalty and reverence to his guru His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that the most important one of the three factors is the loyalty and reverence to the guru, i.e. to believe in the guru one hundred percent and truly follow what guru says without having a tiny bit of his own thoughts. This is what His Holiness has observed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for so many years, and has nothing to do with how much offering has been made. Before seeking refugee under His Holiness, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had at least recited forty nine times The Great Compassion Mantra for, three times Chapter of the Universal Gate and one thousand times the Mani Mantra everyday. Though practicing so energetically, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still felt that the practices are ineffective and the karma could not be changed.

A few months ago, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche found a lipoma in his finger. Given the past karma of killing, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche accepted this karmic result and didn’t let it become a mental burden. Till several days ago, seeing that the time had arrived for a surgery, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a disciple who works as a surgeon conducts a lipoma removal operation. This disciple did the surgeries over one thousand cases per year. Dr. Tsai expected to see excessive bleeding during the surgical operation and thereby prepared a lot of additional stuff. However, when Dr. Tsai gave Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche an anesthetic injection before the surgery, she saw there was actually no bleeding after she withdrew the needle. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche told Dr. Tsai a numb sensation was felt, she still felt unsure and gave Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche another anesthetic injection before starting the operation. When her knife cut the skin open, the lipoma popped out as if being on its initiative. Though a lipoma usually has to be removed by cutting it off the muscle, only a bit of the muscle was touched in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s case. Moreover, there was hardly any bleeding. Generally speaking, such a surgery should take over an hour, but Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s lipoma removal operation took only 10 minutes. Under a normal condition, both the inner and outer layers, two layers in total, need to be sutured, but for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche only the outer skin was sutured. In fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had told Dr. Tsai that suturing should be unnecessary, but Dr. Tsai still put in three stitches. Nonetheless, it was only later when she realized that suturing was indeed unnecessary. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had a completely different surgery from those conducted on ordinary people. What’s more, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was about to receive the anesthetic injection before the operation, Dr. Tsai kept saying that there would be extreme pain. Nonetheless, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart didn’t act upon hearing her words. While the injection was being given, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche merely felt a metal plate pressed against his skin and didn’t felt any pain from the intruding needle. Though pain、swelling and fullness are common symptoms in the post-anesthesia period, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s finger neither swelled、full nor hurt. All of this happened because, if a person truly accepts causes and results and takes everything in frankly as it happens, he will have very little sorrow. The reason why the bleeding was minimal lies in the fact that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has the ability to make the bleeding occur only in a patch of skin as well as to prevent blood in the rest of his body from flowing to the part being operated. Besides, as the lipoma developed in Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s ring finger, it didn’t bring about much inconvenience. Had it developed in his thumb or index finger, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche wouldn’t have been able to bestow blessings upon others then. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened on the causes and effects and said that karmic results will certainly take place. If an evil cause didn’t lead to an evil karmic result, the virtuous cause earned by attending the pujas would not lead to any virtuous result, either. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s lipoma removal surgery was a typical case of having a reduced heavy karmic result.

If we consider the Guru an ordinary human being, we will receive blessing of an ordinary human being. If we consider the Guru a Buddha or Bodhisattva, we will receive blessing of a Buddha or Bodhisattva. It doesn’t matter whether the Guru is a Buddha or not, it’s the degree of one’s reverence to his Guru that counts.

When practicing the Four Immeasurables, i.e. mercy, compassion, sympathetic joy, and renunciation. One would be wrong to think that sympathetic joy and renunciation would appear only after mercy and compassion have been generated. One cannot generate mercy and compassion simply by having thoughts for the benefit of others. The practice should be conducted in the reverse order. Renunciation has to be practiced first! If one could not renounce everything that pleases himself, or that he likes, detests, or abominates, he will never have mercy and compassion. Without mercy and compassion, none of his practice will take effect. All of us think that we ourselves have conducted the practice, but we often get irritated upon hearing a single sentence we don’t like. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started his Buddhist learning with the practice of renunciation. Sympathetic joy doesn’t mean fondness, but unrestraint.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very glad to receive scolded by his guru. However, you always either turn unhappy on your face or feel disagreeable in your mind once you are scolded by your guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completely accepts all kinds of teachings from his guru, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. For example, once, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was in the 2nd floor of the monastery lounge and the attendant of His holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was absent. Unexpectedly, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to make him a cup of milk tea. After Rinchen Dorjee served the milk tea to His Holiness, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, in front of many people, severely challenged Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche: “Do you know how to make milk tea? This tasted so bad.” If you were Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, you would have explained a lot. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completely accepted it without any explanation. It is always the disciple’s fault to do anything that makes his guru unsatisfied. There was another example; during his first lunch with His Holiness right after the perfect completion of his retreat in Lapchi Snow Mountain and the followed fir puja, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was scolded by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche for something that was done by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s disciples, not by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche completely received the scolding and did not make any explanation. Knowing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s problem, His Holiness challenged Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to eliminate Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s arrogance and self-pride.

There was a disciple who said he could not go across the obstacle. The truth is that if he thinks he could not go across it, he will not go across it. It also tells us that he does not believe in the law of cause and effect, he is unwilling to correct himself, and reluctant to put everything down. One has to go across the barriers by himself. The Buddha and Bodhisattvas just open the door for you, but you have to cross the threshold by yourself. If you can not cross it, you will not be qualified to be a disciple. When one says he can not achieve it, in fact it is that he does not want to do it.

Guru scolds you for those that you do not like most since these are your defects. Those that you like most are also your defects. How to achieve the so-called “Always make your Guru delighted”? When a Guru sees his disciples correcting himself, the guru feels delighted. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has refused the offering that a disciple has been making for more than one month. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that: only when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche feels delighted, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would accept the disciple’s offering.

There was a believer who brought his wife and daughter to request a visit to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche yesterday. He told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that he had done something wrong because he had not listened to his wife and lost much money in investment. He told to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that he felt very sorry to his wife, and he wanted to take this chance to repent to his wife. Nevertheless, he then asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s advice about the feasibility of an investment opportunity that he had recently in Mainland China. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened in the puja: If one does not wisdom, it is likely for one to be deceived by what the man had talked about. The man only wanted to make use of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas to let his wife give him money to invest again. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked his wife: “You do not ask your husband to make big money, don’t you?” The wife answered: “No” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then asked: “You will be happy even if he only earns NT$ 20,000 per month, won’t you?” And she said “Yes.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has clearly known what is on the comer’s mind.

Another believer made her repentance to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that she hadn’t been showing filial piety, now hoping to buy a house to fulfill her responsibility to her mother. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that she simply wished Buddhas to make her rich and buy herself a house. The fact is her mother would only take one room of the house; the rest is for her to use.

One believer implored Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to conduct Phowa Dharma for his father. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche didn’t promise to him and enlightened that, to implore for Phowa, it is not simply kneeling down Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and asking for it orally. The father has not accumulated sufficient merits. Even if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche promised to conduct Phowa Dharma, the son would not have been able to find Rinchen Dojree Rinpoche as his father was passing. Moreover, even if the son could find Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, the ritual would not be successful.

A disciple brought his whole family to see Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and sniveled that his two children have been diagnosed with cancers. The disciple even further asked how come he has been so misfortunate. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that there is no misfortunate thing and this disciple didn’t have faith in his Guru and didn’t accept the law of causes and effects. Another disciple just shared his story prior to the weekly puja. His father-in-law has not sought refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche nor did meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche before, but he did not feel any pains during the last stage of his cancer. Why was the first disciple still so afraid? Disciples can rely on the Guru and dharma protectors; even after passing away, they can still rely on the Guru and dharma protectors.

Mantras represents the mercy, compassion and vows of Yidams. If those who recite mantras do not learn the mercy and compassion and their vows are not relevant to those of Yidams, the virtues cultivated by reciting mantras can only be employed in the next life. The minds of those who recite mantras need to accord with those of Yidams in order to bring about the power of the mantras. Compared with other religions, the most significant difference of Buddhist Dharma lies in the concept of mercy and compassion. Yesterday was a Saturday and, the whole morning from 8 AM to 11 PM, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had conducted a fire puja outside in such a scorching hot weather that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s dharma clothes were soaking wet with sweat. Then, in the afternoon from 5 PM to 8 PM at Glorious Jewel Jewellery company on Yi-Xian Road, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received and helped believers, never ceasing to bear a hand to sentient beings. It is impossible to carry on if not for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mercy and compassion.

The importance of Four Immeasurables which is the root of learning Buddhism has often been overlooked. If one can achieve that attainment, one is a Bodhisattva. In order to achieve the attainment of mercy, compassion, sympathetic joy, and renunciation, one has to forgo all worldly love and hatred with courage, mercy, compassion, and without worries, attachment, or fears. That’s why Avalokiteshvara, the representative Bodhisattva of mercy and compassion, is also called Fearless Bodhisattva. Before his merciful and compassionate mind emerges, the effect of one’s reciting mantras or making prostrations is to cultivate virtues to continue learning Buddhism. One ought to abandon what one likes or dislikes. Without that, neither mercy nor compassion can be obtained.

Once one has a merciful heart, one then needs to practice the void of nature which is wisdom. If one has mercy but does not have wisdom, one will become a good person lacking discrimination between right and wrong and will know nothing and have no ability to help others. Also those who do not have wisdom would be cheated by the believers, just like the story of the believers talked about. Why did many people get scolded as soon as they kneeled in front of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? Because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche observe these people with light of wisdom and thus everything is very clear.

A long while ago when learning Buddhist Dharma of Exoteric Buddhism, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also donated money to help print sutras. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche often received sutras and statues for the sake of connecting causes and conditions. Consequently Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had stocked too many of them without knowing what to do with. Eventually Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche responded to all givers: I have already had them. In fact, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew because of his greediness people would think of giving him sutras and status as gifts. Some people think that it is required to place many statues of Buddhas at home to learn Esoteric Buddhism. Giving people cards of Buddhas is inappropriate, either. It’s because perhaps people may insert such cards into their wallets which are put in the back pocket of their trousers. That is disrespectful to Buddhas.

Many people advised others to print Buddhist sutras, but now many advertisements about printing Buddhist sutras are to make money. If there were no correct concepts, it would be useless even printing thousands of Buddhist sutras. Unless, it would be useful to print Buddhist sutras and send them to the places where there are really no Buddhist sutras such as Qinghai and Tibet. In today’s Buddhist circles, people raise funds to build Buddhist temples; but the key point should be the practitioners in the Buddhist temples; the temple would just be like a warehouse for storing Buddhist statues if no practitioners practices Buddhism there.

The solicitudes that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has are about His Holiness Chetsang and Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has worried about why disciples still do not listen to Rinpoche’s teachings and that all sentient beings are still in the suffering ocean of reincarnation. As for our relatives, do not worry about them because they come here just to initiate conditions. Formerly, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s son spent all the money and asked for money from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche at home; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not give him the money and let him starve for a couple of days; so, later, he has learned to save a little money and not to used up all of it. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not spoil his children and think that the children are here to create conditions, unlike most parents who spoiled their children. Pampering children is not really good for them. And Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught his son this way because Rinpoche had the ability to know that his son would not starve to death. Do not do the same to your children because you do not have the ability to know such things.

Before taking refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche drove a Jaguar car. At the time, there were not too many Jaguar vehicles in the whole Taipei city. After taking refuge, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s business collapsed and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was too poor to even pay for a meal. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not ask His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to conduct any dharma ritual for him; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just repented, practiced Buddha dharmas, and was rather joyful instead, since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that the karmic retribution of poverty had been repaid. One who becomes poor must not give alms or make offering once in one’s past lives. One should also do one’s work without expecting any results by following every of the conditions and by offering one’s best effort and all the life energy. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was young, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche always did his best to his jobs since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche thought that he had taken the salary from the boss.

Do not think that, after you taking refuge, Buddha will help you to block off the karmic creditors; rather, Buddha will ask your karmic creditors to come to ask the debts as soon as possible since you have the assets to repay due to taking refuge. Even the accomplished masters need to repay their debts. Nagarjuna who was reincarnated from Vimalakirti, a layman and Bodhisattva, was an accomplished master in India. At the time, many non-Buddhists or even Buddhists envied his accomplishments, and even wanted to kill him. However, he could not be killed by any methods whether he was poisoned, shot by arrows, or slashed by knifes, etc. He finally told them that all these methods could not be used to kill him because he had absolutely not owed any karmic debts related to those things. Nagarjuna said that at the time he still owed an ant only because in one of Nagarjuna’s past lives he used a leaf to cut the ant’s head off and it was the time to repay the debt. Then he took a leaf and cut off his own head. Because Nagarjuna’s head was rolled to a very far place after being cut off, there still maintains two different graves for Nagarjuna in India today.

Those that are harshest to you are the debts you made in your previous life. Nowadays you are paying back the karmic debt, so be grateful to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for those.

To be liberated from cyclic existence, one ought to be free from attachment. Love and attachment are different. Be aware of what you like most or what you dislike most; continually train and inspect yourself to abandon all of them equally. When you are reciting the Four Immeasurables, contemplate if you have violated the grand wish or not. All thoughts beyond the Four Immeasurables are evil. Practicing the Four Immeasurables is to develop the Boddhicitta. Discipline yourself according to the Four Immeasurables, and the Boddhi act will be accomplished someday.

Next, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche orally bestowed upon the new converted disciples the simple ritual of Four Arm Avalokiteshvara Practice and the ritual of Achi Protector, and also explained the meaning of developing the taking refuge and arousal of mind as well as the Four Immeasurables. Often there are questions asked by the new disciples who just took refuge: What homework should I do after taking refuge? Which Buddhist sutra should I read? Actually, practicing Buddha dharma is not like what you might think that one practices Buddha dharma everyday by just following the Guru’s instructions about reciting Buddhist sutras, holding mantras, and prostrating to Buddha. It entirely depends on your mind. If your mind is not right and your speech and deeds remain unchanged, you will never obtain any accomplishment by just reciting mantra in your mouth and prostrating Buddha with your body. The dharma verses of “taking refuge and arousal of mind” and “Four Immeasurables” that you recited at the beginning of every puja, which Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche command all of you to attend every week, are just to teach you how to practice Buddha dharma. Since you do not know how to make a vow at the beginning of practicing Buddha dharma, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are so compassionate to teach you with the four short dharma verses of “Four Immeasurables”. It is to teach you on making vows and cultivating a compassionate heart as long as you can recite and contemplate these four sentences with a diligent mind. The Four Immeasurables are the essence of all Buddha- Dharma. If you do well on the preliminary practice i.e. developing the Bodhichitta, you will be able to accomplish the main practice i.e. the Bodhi acts. If just at the beginning you have sincerely recited the dharma verses of “praying Guru for transmitting dharma” with a respectful mind, you will obtain the Buddha dharma teachings blessed by the Guru.

Almost all the dharma texts begin with dharma verses of taking refuge and arousal of mind motivation as well as the Four Immeasurables, which are regarded as the motivation of practicing Buddha Dharma. The Simplified Ritual of Avalokiteshvara Dharma, which is imparted today, does not have Four Immeasurables because this text is to practice for ourselves, not to help sentient beings. The benefit of reciting mantras is to prevent us from conducting evildoings and to subdue our minds of deluded thought by mantras. Reciting mantras can also inform our karmic creditors that we have been learning Buddha dharma in the hopes that they might temporarily stop interfering with us.

In the Dharma text, the verse “The supreme and most auspicious Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the first verse of “Refuge and Arousal of Mind” prayer, symbolizes that the means of attaining Buddhahood, the Gurus who impart the Buddhist teachings, and the group of practitioners are on the highest level. Sangha refers to the ordained and lay people who are practicing Buddhism and determined to leave the cycle of birth and death. Buddhist teachings are most auspicious and rare because they help liberate us from the cycle of birth and death. The second verse “I seek refuge until attaining Buddhahood” means that we has to always seek refuge under the Three Jewels before we has accomplished aspiration, action and realization of Bodhichitta. The power of refuge will always be needed until we attain Buddhahood. The third verse is “With all the merits and virtues accumulated through the ten thousand practices in the six degrees.” The six degrees refer to the Six Paramitas as well as the practice conducted on the Bodhisattva path. As the first practice in the Six Paramitas is practicing charity and making offerings. The way to make offerings has been expounded with exceptional clarity in the Universal Door Chapter. Even Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva makes an offering to Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, and Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara makes an offering to Prabhūtaratna-tathāgata, too. Even Bodhisattva makes the offerings, not to mention that we should do this too. Next comes the observance of the disciplines and one should follow the precepts bestowed by his Guru. Then, the practice of patience means that one not only has to endure the reproval from others, but also has to be able to resist the complements people give. Some people have difficulty staying at home because they do not have enough endurance. Thereby, they’re drawn by the external affairs. A practitioner lets everything go by with its causes and conditions. For instance, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can stay at home for as long as one month if food is provided because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart can not be drawn. Then follow the practices of diligence, contemplation, and wisdom. Before one attains Buddhahood, he has to practice the Six Paramitas continuously, including keeping all of his speeches and actions within the disciplines. The “ten thousand practices” do not mean to do it ten thousand times. Here, “ten thousand” means a large amount, and “ten thousand practices” means that one has to conduct the practice continuously without any interruptions. Additionally, one accumulates merits and virtues through the practice of the Six Paramitas. The forth verse “I aspire to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of the sentient beings,” is what Buddhist learning is all about: to obtain extraordinary powers for the benefit of the sentient beings and to help the sentient beings released from the cycle of birth and death as well as to liberate them from the sorrow ocean of reincarnation.

The verse “May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes”, the first verse of “The Four Immeasurables” prayer, is to vow to help all sentient beings to attain the eternity, that is, the ultimate bliss of being liberated from the cycle of reincarnation, and also obtain cause by the help of Buddha Dharma to be liberated from reincarnation. The second verse “May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes” is to vow to help all sentient beings to be liberated from the suffering of being reincarnated, and from the hindrance and attachment that cause the suffering. Although the rebirth confusion does exist, but actually, we have not forgotten the suffering of being in the cycle of reincarnation. Therefore, we are afraid of dying, hoping to live longer so as not to suffer from the reincarnation. The third verse “May all sentient beings never be separated from bliss without suffering” is vow that all the worldly bliss are accompanied with sorrow. The sorrow comes when the bliss could not be obtained. The true sorrow less bliss is the ultimate bliss of being liberated from reincarnation. The fourth verse is “May all sentient beings be in equanimity, free of bias, hatred, and attachment”: To be free of bias, hatred, and attachment means not to even watch or listen to them. Keep away from all you like as well as all you hate. That is, not to attach or cling to anything. You all live by the senses of the Six Roots (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind), as depicted in the Heart Sutra, and thereafter the Six Dusts (visual forms, sounds, odors, flavors, touch and mental objects) arise and contaminate your heart, so that you unceasingly make evildoing, and the afflictions arise messily. Although we cold not stop the perception from the Six Roots, we could train ourselves through practicing Buddhism that our heart will not be moved by these perceptions. For example, during Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s lipoma removal operation, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s heart was not moved by Dr. Tsai’s words at all and thus did not feel any pain, although he had heard of what Dr. Tsai kept saying that there would be extreme pain. If one could abandon the clinging to love as well as hatred, equally abandon all what he likes or hates, abide by his mind in equanimity, and then the inherent Buddha nature will emerge. Therefore, you have to inspect yourself when you feel very unhappy, grieved, or angry. You also have to inspect your heart when you feel extraordinarily happy or joyful. Since no matter you feel happy or unhappy tells that you have not abandoned them in equanimity. The word “Immeasurables” means that it is immeasurable and incomparable in the Universe. When you achieve the attainment of four dharma verses, your mind will be immeasurable.

Sutras are the teachings of Sakymonia Buddha. In sutras, we may see that a disciple should walk around the Buddha three circles and then ask Buddha-Dharma. At the beginning of the puja, you just recited the verses of Supplication of Dharma-Transmission routinely. The Buddha-Dharma should be requested, and then the Guru might transmit it. You have reverence if you recited them with a sincere heart. You are blessed if you have reverence. Therefore, it is not proper to study sutras without an oral transmission by guru. In monasteries of Tibet, the gurus orally impart the Buddhist Canon to disciples every year so that the disciples are eligible to read it. This is not a problem of stealing Dharma, but lack of reverence. All matters related to the Buddha-Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche definitely will ask His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche first and then start to do under H.H.’s permission. There are more than 200 monasteries of Drikung Kagyu; some abbot of them will come and ask for help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would still ask H.H. even Richen Dorjee Rinpoche thought it would be fine, because Guru’s wisdom certainly could lead Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in the right direction.

There are two kinds of Dharma Protectors. Some of them are mundane Protectors, that is, they are ordinary gods and spirits in the world. Many Tibetan clans have their own Protectors who can be included as the mundane ones. The mundane Protectors do not care about the principle of right and wrong; they would help you if only you had made offerings to them. However, you have to pay for it if they fulfill your wishes. The Dharma Protector, Achi, on the other hand, is a supermundane one. She vowed to protect the practitioners and help them from idleness, so as to help them go well on the road of learning Buddhism. Never take the Dharma Protector as a fighter for you. Return the prayer text if you do not like to recite them. But do not despise or dispraise Dharma Protector, such as saying that the Dharma Protector does not work well, etc. Achi, though having attained the Buddhahood, is protected by her family and relatives who still have somewhat human habits.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company.

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei and enlightened the importance of “Repentance”. Prior to the start of the puju, many disciples and believers publicly repented themselves before the mandala. After ascending to the dharma seat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that today’s puja is not a puja of making repentance. In fact, when seeing believers and disciples one day before, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had only instructed one family among them to repent. However, the leading disciple incorrectly listened to what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had said. The delivery disciple also incorrectly delivered the wrong message that all disciples and believers who had went to repent on last Saturday could publicly repent during today’s puja. As a result, there were a lot more people that repented and therefore delayed the time for everyone to listen to Buddha Dharma. Then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche punished the leading disciple, who heard Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s words incorrectly, for not being qualified to sit at the front of the venue and asked her to move to sit at the back immediately. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also scolded the other disciple who delivered the wrong message that if he is a Rinpoche or not? He was punished to change the vest. Moreover, many disciples who made repented did not truly repent and still tried to defend for themselves.

The Master Gampopa had said that the high-level practitioners make offerings to the guru with energetic practicing, make guru joyful and then receive the blessings. Medium level practitioners make offerings to the guru with body, speech and mind. It is making offering to praising guru’s merits. Ordinary low-level practitioners will make offerings to the guru with goods and wealth. Why is making offering a must? It is because there will be no virtues without making offerings. Without virtues, you can not hear any Buddha Dharma even if Buddha Shakyamuni gives dharma teachings in front of you. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has accomplished all three kinds of offerings. Whatever the Buddhist center or the Lineage needs, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will make offerings immediately. Yet all of you haven’t accomplished any one the three offerings. You can not even accomplish the money offerings that the lower level practitioners are supposed to do, not to mention make the guru joyful. Buddhas, You should practice the heart of renunciation, cultivate the mercy and compassion heart and accumulate virtues. Listening words or delivering messages incorrectly is because of lacking attentiveness. It is not difficult to practice Buddha Dharma. What makes it difficult is everyone does not believe in Buddha Dharma.

The Master Gampopa said that we should make offerings to the Guru with the four powers of faith, reverence, energy, and antidote. Additionally, we should never encumber the Guru. In any case, we must not reverse causes into effects and thereby carry out foolish actions. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has taught all the disciples so much during the many years, but we still wouldn’t change ourselves. We are encumbering the Guru indeed. One day, the Guru’s body will be consumed and depleted by us. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not remain in this world forever simply because we recite the Long Life Prayer of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche every day. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is able to liberate beings anywhere in the six realms, and there are still innumerable sentient beings in need of help from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The Guru has to help many other people and do not live only for us one thousand people. We have failed to learn and practice properly even after hearing a wealth of Buddhist teachings and thus have become a burden on the Guru. If we keep encumbering our Guru in this way, our causes and conditions will eventually be terminated someday.

For example, one of the disciples who just expressed repentance didn’t have the heart of true repentance. He still said that he himself had not seen Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, who was sitting at the table next to his, when he and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche dined in the same restaurant. However, it was impossible as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s unique appearance always draws the attention of others even though they do not know who Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche actually is. Before taking refuge, the factory operated by this disciple had enjoyed prosperity with the help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. Then, he thought that he wouldn’t be stricken with poverty as long as he followed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and thereby took refuge, starting to learn Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that it doesn’t matter for us to start with such thinking. However, even after the disciple took refuge, he has never been willing to do charity or make offerings. Moreover, he commissioned the real estate department of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company to sell his house and proposed a price that was much higher than its market price. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had already reminded him that the house would not be able to be sold at such a price. Still, he thought that, since the house was commissioned to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s company, which would get a commission, the house would be sold given the great merits of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. He was being greedy. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s merits are not to be used in this way, but to be used for the benefit of the sentient beings. How could one have such a heart and become a burden on his Guru? Right there and then, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolded and instructed that no one in his family were to be allowed to make any offerings.

Another disciple who had expressed repentance didn’t make repented truly, and neither did he talk about what was wrong with his mind while making offering, either. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had rejected and returned his offering of several hundred thousand dollars. There was still another disciple, whose mother had been having mental problems for several decades. With Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings, her mother’s condition had improved a great deal. Nonetheless, she failed to take good care of her mother and even took her out on a tour. Her mother got tired and her mental condition thereby worsened. The disciple then considered her mother being possessed by a ghost and spirit and brought her to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to pray for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s blessings. She hadn’t looked after her mother well and simply handed the problem to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. She did so because she reversed the causes into the effects. What’s more, one of the disciples who serve Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was constantly forgetful. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that the reason lied in the fact that she was inattentive to regard the matters about Guru as her first priority.

When you disciples meet with difficulty, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would help you for the first time, so as that you may come to learn the Buddha’s teachings because of being touched by the greatness of Buddha Dharma. However, you are still selfish, egoistic and persist your old way of doing things. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ever acquired skin cancer but never told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s guru His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother. Till now, even all of you knew it, but His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother still don’t know anything about Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s skin cancer. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche never beseeched His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to conduct a Dharma for him, nor did Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sob it out to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. The reason why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not talk about the skin cancer to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s mother was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that she could not help it even if she knew, not because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was afraid mother might be concerned for him. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not tell His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was because that since His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche had already taught and transmitted Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche Buddha Dharma, and it was because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche himself did not practice well so the karmic effect emerged. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just continued to practice himself. If Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had told His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, it would burden the Guru. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also believed that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would definitely help him. You, however, ask Guru for help without following in advance what Guru has already taught you, because you are lazy and unwilling to practice the Buddha’s teachings. If one has sufficient faith in his Guru, one will obtain blessings without telling his Guru. One’s suffering is indeed the karmic effect manifested. As long as one follows Guru’s teachings accordingly, one will definitely obtain Guru’s blessings. Only when you have no idea after you already practice in accordance with Guru’s teachings, you come to ask your Guru for help. It is pardonable for you to ask after you do according to Guru’s teachings first but have no result. It was also the Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s karmic effect from killing in past lives that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had received a lipoma removal surgery on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s finger. However, it was also a case of having a reduced heavy karmic result.

Congratulations to those whose family members acquire cancer, for that you have one more tool to practice Buddhist teachings than those who do not have cancer. One has suffering and sorrow of illness would practice Buddhism with a more earnest heart, while one lives in his good days may not want to learn and cultivate the Buddha’s teachings. Do not think that you listen to only a little bit of Buddha Dharma. A Buddhist word or verse could liberate us as long as we possess deep faith. You take a karmic effect of flowering as a karmic effect of fruit bearing, and take a karmic effect of fruit bearing as a karmic effect of flowering. Having cancer is just a karmic effect of flowering, not a karmic effect of fruit-bearing yet. Before a karmic effect of flowering ripens fruit, the flavor of the fruit is still uble to be changed.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is absolute reverent to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Even when they, the Guru and the disciple, are together with each other with no presence of someone else, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still all well behaved. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s reverence to His Holiness will not fade away with time even though Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been accompanying His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche for a long time. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche is also has a human body of flesh and blood. Although His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche attains significant accomplishment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is still concerned about His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, and tries to keep His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche from being too tired and exhausted. You consider your Guru as a superman? One who does not have a caring heart to his Guru is not qualified to be a disciple at all.

What Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been teaching is the Mahayana to practice the Bodhisattvas’ path. In Taiwan, no other gurus of any Buddhist centers would teach Buddha Dharma or conduct pujas as frequently as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does. More importantly, these teachings and pujas are given not for the purpose of making profits. If you come to inquire personal matters without faith, reverence and diligence, the answer is still useless to you. It is not that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche doesn’t want to see disciples. It is that your attitudes are crucial. Do not think simply making apologies or repentance can end your mistakes. You need to be determined not to live your life under the delusion. Don’t disbelieve the impermanence of life. Don’t be unaware that death is always at your door. Additionally, don’t think it is making offerings by doing little affairs for the Buddhist center.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been following accordingly and practicing diligently the teachings of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has realized the enlightenment first and then read a variety of sutras to confirm his own practices. And then Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche teaches you the disciples the key points of Dharma so as to save a great deal of your time. However, although disciples have heard and known a lot of Buddha Dharma, you have practiced little. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not read any page before about the enlightenment by Master Gampopa that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught today. But the method of cultivating merciful and compassionate heart is exactly the same as what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been earnestly, kindly and unceasingly teaching and advising you.

Now that you don’t practice what was taught and still commit mistakes one after another. Why do you make mistakes repeatedly? Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche taught his own children the same lesson he taught disciples: if you do something wrong at home, your parents would forgive you. Yet, there are disciplines and laws at school, in companies and in society; you have to be responsible for your wrongdoings. In your life, it shouldn’t be that you are cautious only when learning Buddha Dharma. You need to be cautious in all aspects of your life, carefully planning each step of your actions. It is difficult to obtain a human body, so is it to take refuge. You ought to cherish what your Guru has taught. It is like having meals; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has eaten the dishes as well as taught you how to taste them. If you don’t take actions, you’d still be starving.

The genuine practitioners must practice the dharma of repentance and make the great repentance. This is to help you eliminate obstacles of learning Buddhism, allowing you to diligently practice Buddha Dharma in the Buddhist path without interference. Making repentance means to take responsibilities for yourself, rather than having others take them for you. It is as if you express your sincerity to your creditors and ask for a grace period to pay back debts. In doing so, it is possible that your creditors may collect fewer interests so that both of you would feel satisfied. But it is hardly possible that you don’t repay debts and interests. Those who don’t know the dharma of repentance and only know how to accumulate virtues by good deeds can at best not to be reborn in the three evil realms. It is because your accumulated virtues are too big to suffer from the sorrow of being reborn in evil realms. However you can’t be liberated from the cycle of birth and death and would still suffer from the sorrow of reincarnation. If you don’t admit your wrongdoings, your karmic creditors of past lives will never forgive you. It is because your karmic creditors realize that if you don’t cultivate repentance, you won’t attain the accomplishment of being liberated from the cycle of birth and death and neither will you be able to help them. Your karmic creditors also understand that they can’t interfere with you after your virtues are accumulated much more. Therefore, they’d act immediately to get in the way of your learning Buddhism so as to obstruct the accumulation of your virtues. In sum, only through making repentance will your liberation from the cycle of birth and death not be influenced, even if the karmic fruit is ripened.

When repenting, one has to have four powers. The first is the power of taking refuge. After one takes refuge under Yidam, Guru, and Three Jewels, one should never violate the refuge vow. One of the verses of the vow to make during the refuge ritual: “taking refuge under Buddha dharma to be honorable one free from cravings.” The meaning of the verse wants us to reduce our cravings such that we will be respected naturally; and we should never break the precepts of taking refuge or the five precepts we lay Buddhists made etc. The second is the power of making vows. Repentance is not only to admit the greediness, hatred, delusions, or the harms to the family and all sentient beings one has committed, but also to further make vows on never committing those mistakes again. When repenting during the practice of Vajrasattva ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made the following vow, “even if the universe is ended, there would be no end to my vows of never committing evils on my body, speech, and mind.” The third is the power of antidote. One must stop doing all evils; all big evils done are started from doing little evils. Do not think it does not matter for one to do just a little evil. Once one has eaten a mouthful of meat, one will be bitten by a mouthful; once one has sucked a mouthful of blood, one will be sucked by a mouthful of his. The karmic retributions will not disappear and all of them need to be repaid. It is just that due to the accomplishments of your practices your karmic retribution will be less than it is supposed to be or you will not be aroused by the bad karmic effects and will not feel sorrows and pains. The fourth is the power of being determined. One needs to continuously do charity to accumulate the assets of virtues and merits for learning Buddha-Dharma; one should do charity when one just hears or encounters any opportunity. One’s goodness is formed cumulatively day-by-day, like accumulating sands to form a tower (or like many grains of sand piled up will make a pagoda). The abundant wholesome roots are gathered up life after lives. One should never have even a slightest arrogance in one’s mind. Venerable master Wuda who wrote the dharma of “water repentance ritual” had been a religious Buddhist practitioner for several generations of past lives. But he just had a thought that he had practiced Buddha dharma very well, all his merits accumulated by his past practices were immediately disappeared such that his karmic creditors for collecting the debts easily found him.

There are three types of yoga in tantric practices. The first is to practice Mantra Yoga. A yogi means either an ordained practitioner or a lay practitioner who truly practices Buddha-Dharma. Mantra is to recite. The purpose of mantra is first to help oneself that is to liberate oneself from the cycles of birth and death; the second is to help all sentient beings. To let the mantra recited have strengths, one must first attain the accomplishments of a merciful heart, a compassionate heart, Bodhicitta, repentance, and reverence, etc which were taught by the Guru before. And one must practice the development stage of contemplating oneself being exactly the same as the Yidam. If one truly practices as such one will obtain virtues. Furthermore, one needs to practice the completion stage at the same time since this is to practice wisdom. To practice Buddha-Dharma, one must practice virtues and wisdom together. One who only practices development stage to accumulate virtues at most can attain the accomplishment of not falling into the three evil realms. One must practice the development stage together with the completion stage in order to liberate oneself and other sentient beings. Practicing development stage is not only to contemplate (visualizing and thinking are two different matters), but also to clearly understand the truth of “karma, cause, and effect”. Because of this understanding, when getting cancer, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche realized that death is impermanent and death is inseparable like a shadow; also, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did not want to encumber His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and just practiced Buddha dharma and examined himself continuously. When practicing development stage, practitioners of high-level capability can bring about an undertaking to benefit others whereas practitioners of low-level capability can give rise to a thought that clinging to worldly matters is vulgar. You can accumulate abundant merits if you can practice completion stage and recite mantras in accordance with Buddha Dharma. Your merits, however, will become virtues, if your thoughts are distracted and deluded. In such a condition, it is not likely to eliminate your karma. That is, eliminating your karma relies on adjusting your thoughts. Karma can be changed fastest by practicing of Vajrayana, which is good for both ordained and lay practitioners well. Although it is stated in the Buddhist Sutras that it’d better to practice tantra of Vajrayana in quiet and remote place and away from the crowds, it is very difficult for you modern people to perform such practices. Therefore, one has to follow the Guru’s instructions and conduct true practice accordingly. When one retorts upon his Guru, the blessing from the Guru will then be terminated.

To practice Mantra Yoga, one must first receive the empowerment from a guru who has attained the position of Rinpoche. It represents that you can practice the dharma and also blesses you to practice the dharma with a clean and pure mind. If one does not have a clean and pure mind, one will not realize the meaning of the dharma even if one has listened to Buddha-Dharma or recited mantras. In addition, the empowerment is also to bless your karmic creditors to eliminate their minds of hatred in order not to interfere with your practices of Buddha-Dharma. The teachings of Mantra Yoga and Vajrayana are the fastest paths that gurus can teach you to practice in order to attain Buddhahood. The Buddha-Dharma taught by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche over the past years is the fastest and the most essential Buddha-Dharma that is good for your modern people to learn and practice. As long as one believes in the guru one hundred percent, follows the teachings exactly, and practices them truly, one will definitely attain the accomplishments for one’s practices. You can recall that if you had some obstacles at the beginning of attending Sunday’s regular pujas, do you now feel that you have more and more time to listen to the Buddha dharma enlightened by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche? This change is because attending pujas uninterruptedly has accumulated your virtues.

Not long ago, one of Richen Dorjee Rinpoche’s friends, being a famous fortune teller and knowing Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for more than twenty years, passed away. He had and had learnt Buddhism earlier than Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, met His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche before Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche did, had met all the lineage heads, received at least three thousand empowerments, and received quite many rituals and mantras as well. He also introduced many people to take refuge in Buddhism. The only thing he had not conducted as much as Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was that he had not practiced retreats. The retreat he had ever practiced was one day merely, though it was not a true retreat. Although he adopted vegetarian diet, he had suffered cardiac problems. He once told Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that “I have been practicing so much dharma that I would like to enjoy the fruit in my next life”. Such an idea turned his merits into virtues, but virtues could not change one’s karma. Therefore, his karma of heart disease and short life span could not be changed. When the friend had apoplexy and was dying, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche paid the expense to send him back to Taiwan by airplane and the expense for his hospitalization. When he passed way, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche performed the Phowa ritual for him. In the mean time, none of the gurus, friends and believers of other lineages had been present to help him. Besides, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche earnestly invited His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to see him. Both Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche know that the man had favorable conditions with Drikung Kagyu. Though he had met His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, he once arose disrespect to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. He ever contacted with Drikung Kagyu, but he did not cherish the opportunity. It was Drikung Kagyu that helped him finally. To teach the disciples, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took him as an example of the opposite side.

The master Gampopa enlightened that a true practitioner would always think over the death and impermanence, the fault of reincarnation, and the karmic power of cause and effect. The practitioner also would practice mercy, compassion and boddhicitta. The practitioner would not covet those in the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, neither in the Arahat path.

On July 22nd, a solar eclipse will happen. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpche enlightened that in Tibetan Buddhism they would perform rituals in such time and it is not that kind superstition of “sun eaten by heavenly dog “. Upon the occurrence of this kind of astronomical phenomena, it could be either great or worst. This time, the solar eclipse will begin at eight in the morning. The world would be full of positive and bright atmosphere and the beings in the ghost realm would be hidden. In general, ghosts would start moving in afternoon. It is common that mediumistic sorcerers meet the visitors at least after two in the afternoon. Some worse of them even do not meet visitors before the evening, because they rely on the ghosts. In the morning, the most powerful king ghosts could not present in the world except that if it is a devil. During solar eclipse, the sunlight would fade away for a period of time. It could affect the beings in the ghost realms. Therefore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would like to conduct a puja of “Thirty Five Buddhas Repentance Ceremony” at 8 in the morning. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that it is a workday, though it is good if everybody could come but it does not require that everybody take a leave for the puja. On 25th of July, it is the birthday of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Therefore a puja of Buddha Amitayus will be held to make the offering to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, to pray for good health of and for longevity of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, and also pray to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche forever abide in the universe so that the sentient beings could be benefited. All the disciples should attend.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company.

July 22, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipai and conducted the auspicious “Thirty-five Buddhas Repentance Ritual”. The longest solar eclipse of this century happened to take place in this morning. At eight o’clock sharp in the morning, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche particularly ascended to the dharma seat and held the Thirty-five Buddhas Repentance puja.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that in Tibet, whenever there is a solar or lunar eclipse, the gurus will conduct the dharma rituals for these events. As long as they are still in the sorrow ocean of reincarnation, the sentient beings in the six realms will be affected by the changes of the celestial bodies in the universe. Even one who has been practicing Buddhism still meet with the yearly, monthly or daily conflicts before attaining the void of nature. That is to say that all changes of the celestial bodies in the galaxy will affect human beings. As it is called “conflict”, then naturally it means bad things! Since we all have been reincarnating in the sorrow ocean life after lives, it is not necessarily that we were all born on earth. As long as we had been born in other planets, our health, thoughts, lucks will be affected whenever the planets come close to us. The scientific studies show that during solar or lunar eclipse, morning and evening tide are different, the magnetic fields and electrons on earth will all be affected, and insects’ and animals’ physical conditions change, …etc. Naturally, the human body will be affected as well.

The solar eclipse would affect all the planets in our solar system, especially the Earth and the sentient beings inhabiting the Earth. In particular, the sentient beings in the Hungry Ghost realm and Hell realm would be considerably affected the most. Sentient beings in the Ghost realm dare not to come out when the positive Chi is strong. In fact, the beings in the Ghost realm began to go into hiding after 4 am. They wait until 4 pm and then resume their activities. Ghosts with more virtues will come out earlier, whereas those with less virtue come out later. Therefore, some beings in the Ghost realm are able to appear in the afternoon, which is the time they lead their lives. However, the total solar eclipse this morning will have these sentient beings feeling frightened due to the inversion of time. In the history, each total solar eclipse was followed by major events which were either greatest or worst. Particularly, after this solar eclipse takes place, it will take 100 years for another solar eclipse to come along. In other words, the impact of this solar eclipse will last 100 years. Therefore, those who commit evil deeds will meet disasters, for their evil karma will blossom ahead of time.

During today’s puja of Thirty-five Buddhas Repentance Ritual, if one prostrates for his own benefit, his intention will deviate from the purpose of today’s puja. One should fill himself with Dharma joy and do the prostrations before the Buddhas on behalf of all the sentient beings, in hopes to prevent the sentient beings as well as the country free from catastrophes because of the solar eclipse. Particularly, today’s solar eclipse can be seen first in India and sweep across the entire Asia and therefore the impact will be immensely significant. With a lot of variables, its impact is still quite unpredictable. Nonetheless, if we all show our sincere repentance, it will definitely have a positive impact. On the other hand, if we hold a selfish attitude, the impact will thereby be negative. The reason lies in the fact that selfish people will share in the common karma among them. As the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are selfless, if one helps the sentient beings, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will then come to his help.

Thirty-five Buddhas Repentance Ritual was introduced in the Ratnakuta Sutra by Buddha Sakyamuni himself, and it has not been practiced by the Exoteric Buddhism in Taiwan. Other repentance rituals such as the Jeweled Repentance Sutra of Emperor Liang Wu Ti, Water Repentance and so forth were all written by later practitioners. Only 35 Buddhas Repentance Ritual is the one that was told by Buddha Sakyamuni. 35 Buddhas Repentance Ritual is especially for those who have developed Budhicitta and cultivate bodhisattva path to practice. Since we have had a plenty of obstacles life after lives, we need the help of this repentance Dharma to fast eliminate the hindrances for learning Buddhism.

A few days before the solar eclepse, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche called His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche for instruction: Which Dharma to practice at the time of the solar eclipse could benefit sentient beings most? His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche enlightened that it was 35 Buddhas Repentance Rintual.

According to the depiction in Buddhist sutras, the merits will be the utmost if a puja held in special astronomical phenomenon like today and typhoon’s day. The merits will be much greater than usual due to the puja conducted for charity when the sentient beings are in suffering and sorrow. It is like when typhoons hit Taiwan before; Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would conduct pjuas so that the destructive power of typhoons would be reduced. Thus, the harm of typhoons brought to sentient beings would be reduced to a tiny degree. It doesn’t mean that there will be no influence of astronomical phenomena on beings in the heaven realm; all beings in the six realms will be affected. If you continuously practice virtue deeds, all changes of planets will be good to you.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also pointed out an error prostration manner of a disciple, entering late and being at the back of the venue, to Buddha. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked her to perform in public of her prostration manner to Buddha and instructed the leading Dharma brother to demonstrate the correct way to this disciple. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche then enlightened us that this disciple had taken refuge since 2002, being a disciple for so many years, however, this disciple still did not understand the correct way of prostrating Buddha; this indicated that she had not followed the instructions at all and had not learned Buddha dharma attentively. Was it possible that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not taught the disciples the correct way to prostrate Buddha? She just prayed for the safety of her family all day long. She was completely selfish and did not watch the guru’s actions. Only a person who is not selfish will pay attention to the guru’s every single movement. Her motion of prostrating Buddha was done so quickly because she thought that it was just a movement. She had not listened to what the guru had taught; even if she had listened she did not remember the teachings solidly. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche ordered the disciple right away to return the red vest worn by all the disciples of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center and all the dharma-textbooks. From now on, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not accept her offerings and only allow her to be a follower.

The ceremony continued with prostration for the repentance. With utmost mercy and compassion, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche guided all the attended disciples and believers to openly disclose their repentance, to speak aloud all of their individual faults to the guru and Buddhas, and none of the faults should be concealed. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche strongly encouraged everybody not to be afraid that the others might hear your speech, be fully open minded to make the repentance. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche added that the only way to develop repentance power is to totally stop those faults any longer. For such a precious chance, some of the attendees confess in floods of tears and were very grateful to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. After the confession, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led the attendees reciting Vajrasattva mantra. When the mantra recitation was completed, it thundered outside that is an auspicious phenomenon. The puja completed perfectly.

In the evening, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened believers with Buddhism and helped them to relieve all kinds of suffering in the world at Glorious Jewel Jewellery Company.

July 24, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to conduct the auspicious Chod puja of the Drikung Kagyu Linage. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: The Chod of Chod Dharma means “Cutting Off” in Tibetan, to cut off all kinds of attachment and affliction. Chod puja is a practice to attain accomplishment. Attaining accomplishment means practitioners of high-level capability that practice this dharma can attain enlightenment in this life, and those of middle-level capability can attain Buddhahood in the intermediate state. Chod puja is very efficacious for transferring consciousness of the ghosts, those who died in the accident and patients in critical conditions. This is something that other dharma for transferring consciousness can not achieve.

Chod puja was written in accordance with the void of nature, which was taught by Buddha Shakyamuni in the Maha-prajna-paramita-sutra, by a Tibetan female lay practitioner, the Machig Lapdron, twelve hundred years ago. “Prajna-paramita” is in Sanskrit language. There were three conditions that Táng-sānzàng did not translate them when translating the terms of Buddhist sutras. One of the conditions was that one word combines many meanings and therefore its meaning is not unable to explain by one Chinese phrase. Therefore, “Prajna-paramita” was a phonetic transcription from Sanskrit to Han language. It took twenty two years for Buddha Shakyamuni to explain the two words, “Prajna-paramita”. Therefore it is clear that we are not able to explain it nowadays. Yet it simply means wisdom for you, by the knowledge you could understand. Wisdom referred in the Buddha Dharma does not mean intelligence in this word but the capability to realize the birth and death, liberate himself from reincarnation, and benefit the sentiment beings. Wisdom is not given by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It was possessed by every sentient being’s nature. Yet because of all kinds of cravings lead to afflictions, therefore wisdom is covered by afflictions. The sword that Manjusri Bodhisattva holds in the right hand is to cut off afflictions with the sword of wisdom. It is not able to conduct Chod Dharma if the wisdom is not enlightened.

Buddha Shakyamuni also attained enlightenment and liberation by practicing as a human being but not transforming from a supernatural being. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained the siddhi of Rinpoche from a believer as well. From the Buddha time till now, even till the future, there will be no one who can attain Buddhahood without a guru. Even His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, whose reincarnation identity was authenticated since childhood, still needed three gurus to teach him. It is impossible for us to practice Buddhism without guru’s teachings and supervisions. It is considered as arrogance and self-pride if one thinks that he could practice Buddha Dharma at home without a guru.

Those who practice Buddha Dharma must truly believe in causes and effects. All good and bad things that you have done are two parallel lines and can not be compensated against each other. Otherwise, there will be no causes and effects! If one wish the bad karmas will never emerge, one should stop doing evil deeds and start doing good deeds, to subdue the power of the evil by the power of the good. Practicing good deeds does not mean donating money to charity foundation or doing good things. Doing good things is the standard of being a human being. True meaning of doing good deeds is stop doing all evil things, start doing all good deeds, and truly practicing the Buddha Dharma accordingly to liberate oneself from birth and death.

When one is performing mudras, it doesn’t mean that he is conducting tantric practices. The mudras are used only to tell apart the Yidams, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Due to the fact that none of us has seen the appearances of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, a mudra is used as the signal from a Buddha for us to tell apart Buddhas. Sometimes, one doesn’t have the time to recite the name of the Buddha or Bodhisattva, so he uses a mudra as a representation. In fact, every Buddha and Bodhisattva has equal mercy and compassion. The distinction among the Buddhas is actually made by human beings. In order to fulfill the needs of various sentient beings, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas manifested themselves with various appearances to help us all. The ‘secret’ in secret tantric practices does not refer to anything mystical or hidden, but means that one’s determination to practice Buddhism is intensively secured, immovable, and immutable, uninfluenced by any internal or external factors. The Exoteric Buddhism is to practice the Bodhisattva path, while tantric practices are means of attaining Buddhahood as well as means of implementing the theories of Exoteric Buddhism.

To learn and study Buddhism, one has to learn to practice charity first and learns to let go himself and to be free of attachments. We have to renounce everything. Only when one is able to renounce all can he eliminate his affliction. Therefore, the practice of the Six Paramitas starts with practicing charity. There are three types of charities in terms of goods, Dharma, and fearlessness. You are not able to make the latter two charities, and are thereby taught to make goods charity, starting from giving our goods and wealth. This is something you can definitely achieve. Ever since 1997, the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center has never charged any admission to attend its pujas. The center has never declared any patronship or allowed those making much more donations to be seated at the front rows. Never has it offered any cheongsam to those donating a million NTD, either. The key point of making an offering is mot the amount of money you donate. It is whether you have reverence and ask for nothing in return when making the offering.

The Dharma Charity is not simply reciting sutras and dedication prayers for certain people. To practice Dharma Charity, one has to achieve attainment of having the capability of helping the sentient beings with Buddhist teachings. Fearlessness Charity is not just speaking something to lift others’ fear. Just like the practice of the Chod puja, the practitioner has to achieve accomplishments in practice so as to obtain the capability to calm the sentient beings in the realms of Hell and Hungry Ghost and make their hearts fear-free. Additionally, the practitioner has to manifest his body as their favorite meat in order to satisfy them first. Thereby, they will be willing to receive help from Buddha Dharma.

There are complicated reasons for one’s obtaining this auspicious cause and condition to attend this Chod puja. There are several required conditions to practice a Chod puja, and none of these can be omitted. The first is if there are the deceased that need help. The condition aroused because you need help of Buddhism despite that you came for yourself, your family, or any other reason. The Buddhas liberate those who possess favorable condition. If you don’t need this help, the Amitabha Buddha could not help you even if the Amitabha Buddha gives you his hands in front of you. In addition, the Chod Dharma could not be conducted without a virtuous Guru. Even with a virtuous Guru, today’s Chod puja wouldn’t be held without the blessing and transmission of the lineage. What’s more, a very special Dharma instrument is needed to complete the practice. This unique Dharma instrument is a female tibia bone. Not all ordinary tibia bones are qualified. Several required conditions of theirs are stated in the Dharma text. For example, the female tibia bones of those who die peacefully cannot be used and it has to be a tibia bone of a female who dies in an accident. Besides, there are specific criteria of shape and size for the bone selection. Therefore, such a Dharma instrument is difficult to obtain. The tibia bone instrument that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche uses was previously used by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, who later personally bestowed upon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche it as well as a one-on-one empowerment for the practice. The Drikung Kagyu Chod puja is well-known and its blessing power is particularly great. It was Drikung Kagyu’s Dhamra Protector Achi herself that attained accomplishment of enlightenment by the practice the Chod Dharma, and attained the rainbow body and obtained rebirth in her own Pure Land. Therefore, the sacred statue of Dharma Protector Achi carries a human tibia bone at the waist.

When conducting Chod pujas, the practitioner must take down all the protective dharma objects and Buddha miniature statues so that ghosts would dare to come close to receive help. Thus, the practitioner can’t be afraid of ghosts to successfully conduct Chod pujas. You are afraid of ghosts due to your lack of merciful and compassionate heart. If you have developed merciful and compassionate heart, you’d hurry up to help them. How come you feel afraid to be hurt by them? When you have a heart of mercy and compassion, you’d fear nothing. Bodhisattvas are fearless of anything. Because they have a merciful and compassionate heart, they are not afraid of being hurt.

As soon as this human tibia is blown, sentient beings in the ghost realm would approach the venue. With the emptiness of mercy and compassion, the practitioner contemplated his flesh as nectar which is first offered to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and then is given to these sentient beings. If the practitioner contemplates perfectly, when the sentient beings come to the venue, what they see are their favorite food as they were alive. Only after their eating are satisfied would it be possible that they would accept help of Buddha Dharma. Unlike other Dharma of consciousness transference, Chod Dharma can be conducted by a practitioner alone without the helps from others to prepare for torma or play music instruments.

Since 1997 when receiving Chod Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been continuously conducting Chod Dharma to benefit sentient beings for nearly thirteen or fourteen years. The sentient beings would give rise to hatred against the practitioner if they could not be benefited by such a dharma of consciousness transference and thus get disappointed. Consequently, they would stay with the practitioner to obstruct his further conduction of the dharma. Nonetheless, since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been conducting Chod for so many years, more and more people come to attend Chod pujas, and the number of attendees for each puja has been more than one thousand. As a matter of fact, it is not only you who really want to come. You are pushed to attend by your karmic creditors and ancestors because of your causes and conditions with Chod Dharma in past lives. Some people came only once and his ancestors’ consciousness was than transferred while others need to come several times. Such the difference has nothing to do with the practitioner, but depends on the heart of attendees as well as the deceased’s accumulated virtues.

Nowadays, the practitioners who are able to conduct the Chod this way in the world are very few. This is not the Dharma that the ordinary lamas are able to conduct; only the practitioners of Rinpoche could conduct this dharma. When Rinche Dorjee Rinpoche grows older and lacks of energy, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche will not conduct Chod Dharma so frequently; it is not unknown how many more years the Chod dharma can be conducted like this! As you will witness later, it takes a great deal of energy and strength for a practitioner to conduct the Chod dharma. You should cherish this virtues to attend such an auspicious and rare puja. To cherish the virtues doesn’t mean not to spend money or waste things. It means that you shouldn’t easily abandon such opportunities to listen to Buddha Dharma and follow a virtuous guru to learn Buddhism. You should cherish the field of virtues which Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche have sowed for you to learn Buddha Dharma.

You may obtain a different result from what you want after puja. However, whatever happened to you such as falling ill, being filed a lawsuit and so forth are all manifestation of karmic effects. The Buddha and Bodhisattvas will not disobey the law of cause and effect, nor will they help you with a sequela in the future. Do not be narrow-minded and merely think about your own sorrow. The sentient beings in the three evil paths suffer still much more; therefore, we have to attend the puja harboring a heart of being on behalf of all the sentient beings in suffering. Broaden your mind, and you will be able to correspond with Bodhisattvas’ heart, and obtain the blessings of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked everyone to contemplate that the elder relatives and those of the same generation were respectively seated on one’s right and left side respectively, while the karmic creditors gathered in the front, and all sentient beings in the six realms (Hell, Hungry Ghosts, Animals, Human Beings, Gods, and Asura) were behind of him, facing the Mandala attending the puja. Thinking once would be enough. The thoughts that once arises will definitely cause the related effect no matter they are virtuous or evil. There was someone who ever kept contemplating for the entire duration of Chod puja and had an ache in his shoulders the next day. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tells you to speak out your names, just speak out in a loud voice your name as well as your living family member’s name whom you want to help for three times. When Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche tells you to speak out the names of the deceased, just speak out the names of the deceased whom you want to help for three times. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that some people may be confused about the reason why they have to speak it out? Doesn’t the Dharma protector know everything? The key point is, if you do not possess sufficient reverence towards the Three Jewels, the Dharma protector would not see you. In the circumstance, your loudly speaking out your name would alarm the Dharma protector to discover you. By reading the names of the deceased, they would be summoned here too. The Yama (king of hell) and the jailers would stop torturing those deceased relatives that are to be liberated by the attendees’ wish when they hear the name of the deceased, so let the sentient beings in hell could come to obtain the help of Buddha Dharma. Following the enlightenment, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to perform auspicious Chod puja.

After the perfect completion of the Chod Dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to give enlightenment: There are five sculptures of death’s-skull on the Dharma instrument worn on Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s head while performing Chod. Nevertheless, do not doubt that why Tibetan Buddhism need to use that scaring forms of bones to conduct dharma? Those five sculptures of death’s-skull represent the human beings’ Five Poisons as well as the Five Wisdoms that subdue our Five Poisons. Due to the afflictions from the Five Poisons, namely greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance and delusion, human beings are unceasingly making evildoings. Why you feel so uneasy and unsafe? It is because you are greedy for everything. You are making efforts with your life on studying, working, and making money to improve all aspects of your living. However, eventually you will get a result of having psychological and physiological problems. The five sculptures of death’s-skull also signifies that people merely leaves behind the skeleton after death, and could not bring away anything but the karma resulted from what you’ve done in this life. What the thing do you still need to be attached to?

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche took an example of that those cases of the new H1N1 flu outbreak in Japan this time were all domestic, but not imported. The medical and health conditions in Japan are the best in Asia, and are also much better than those in India or China where there are much more population. However, few people in China or India suffered from H1N1 flu, and there were even almost none H1N1 case in Qing Hai and Tibet where esoteric dharmas exist because many practitioners have constantly practiced the tantric dharmas. It has nothing to do with whether the Japanese were misfortunate, but for that many Japanese enjoy drinking cold water by their customs on eating. They are used to having ice water, or even ice beer, right after getting up in the morning. When having a meal, they also have a cup of ice water besides their dishes at table. Moreover, they love to eat raw food. Therefore, they have their lungs chilled and thus are vulnerable to get cold. So are the people in Hong Kong. That’s why the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) broke out so seriously there a few years ago. In addition, Japanese love to eat sea food and sashimi, and by that they made much serious killing karma. Now it is summer and many people like to eat ice cream and drink ice water or beverages. However, doing that, they have their lungs that are warmer in summer more seriously chilled in summer than in winter. Hence, those who own this kind of diet habit would have much possibility to catch flu in winter.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a lay practitioner; in addition to teaching Buddha dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is also doing business. For Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, doing business is practicing Buddha dharma as well. You are lay persons, so, of course, it is most suitable to receive Buddhist teachings from a lay guru. It is stated in the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sutra that the Guan Yin Bodhisattva will appear in your form to liberate you. Today, all of you have the identity of a lay person; you will naturally meet a lay guru to teach you. Being a lay person, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has also experienced many disasters and all sorts of sufferings in life and understands the sufferings of those who practice Buddha dharma at home. These sufferings will not be known by an ordained guru. When you ask an ordained guru’s advice for your problems e.g. love affair, he could just say, “Put it down!” since he has already abandoned all these love affairs between men and women. But how could you put it down? When you go home and think about your girlfriend or boyfriend, you will still be trapped in the feelings of love and hate. Or when you ask an ordained guru’s advice for things that don’t go as you wish, he would only say, “Life is impermanent!”

If today your husband loves you very much, it would be impossible for you to learn Buddha dharma. Or if you are rich and everything goes well, you will not have any motivation to learn Buddha dharma. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s Buddhist center is not like the other centers that are always visited by rich people; all of you came here, the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, because you had troubles or accidents. This is also related to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s vow of helping all sentient beings released from sufferings to obtain joy, and attaining Buddhahood.

The so-called “practicing together” means that all attendees of a puja have the same mind of wish to help all sentient beings in sufferings; in this way, we can then correspond with Buddha and Bodhisattva’s minds. We and our karmic creditors, as well as all sentient beings in the six realms are all part of all sentient beings. Today we are just representatives of all sentient beings, and need to have merciful and compassionate heart as well as the repentance to attend this puja. Whether we can obtain any benefit from attending a puja depends on our mind of attending the puja.

All those who want to attend the puja are required to meet Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and answer the reason why they want to attend. Only those who have causes and conditions, and virtues can attend. Some people had asked Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche for attending the puja for many times. But Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had not agreed to their requests since it would be better for these people not to attend the puja. It because thye, after attending the puja, will slander Buddhas instead, saying things such as Buddha and Bodhisattvas were not efficacious or Buddha and Bodhisattva did not help me at all. Such remarks are examples of slandering Buddhas.

After understanding the sufferings of life, one should not give up one’s life which is absolutely not allowed. Instead, one should know how do to calm one’s mind and feel more secure. The secure feeling in the mind is not due to the wealth, career, and marriage, but comes from the understanding about the goal of one’s life.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche again asked everyone not to eat meat. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche further advised the attendees that one should not come to attend the puja in the future if one does not become a vegetarian. Tantric pujas, which one cannot attend without great virtues, are different from regular pujas. Why does one need to adopt a vegetarian diet? Buddhist sutra has stated that we need to have mercy and compassion, and should not harm any sentient beings. Therefore we should begin our practice from not to eat the meat of sentient beings. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that if one eats the meat of any sentient being, he will destroy the seeds of compassion in his mind. Although you have not achieved the attainment of mercy and compassion, you should lead the practice to the development of merciful and compassionate heart. In some other Buddhist centers, their followers are called Bodhisattvas, but are admitted to become a vegetarian gradually. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche asked every one of us to stop the non-vegetarian diet immediately. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that the reason why Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche can attain the accomplishment of the position of Rinpoche from an ordinary believer in this life is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s determination, which is biggest difference between Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche and you in learning Buddhism. When knowing that Buddha dharma can benefit self and other people, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche was determined to practice Buddha dharma immediately. Being a vegetarian will not conflict with our career or our love affairs. There are the so-called “fair-weather friends” (or wine-and-meat friends). If you and your friend are separated because of vegetarian diet, it indicates that you are just associated based on wine and meat, that is the so-called wine-and-meat friends, and the relationship will not last for a long time.

Adopting a vegetarian diet and becoming ordained are two different things. The Buddha did talk about the benefits of being ordained, however, many people in India during the Buddha time had the thoughts of becoming ordained practitioners. Therefore, Buddha had many become ordained. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a lay person and would not encourage you to become ordained. In early days when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche just became a vegetarian, some friends scoffed and questioned that it was unlikely a sea-food hobbyist to become a vegetarian. Some of them even questioned if Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had accumulated so much wrong doings as to adopt a vegetarian diet. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche answered “yes, many wrong doings.” Don’t ever feel that adopting a vegetarian diet is odd and then change your mind to eat meat again. In fact, everyone dislikes some kind of food and would become angry if he is forced to take it. Why it is different to adopt a vegetarian diet? Actually, it is just to change the habit of eating only. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche strengthened “no adopt a vegetarian diet, no coming to the puja.” One could find and join the other Buddhist centers, as nowadays during such a downturn many other centers in Taiwan are short of believers. But, if one’s wish is to learn true Buddhism, one has to adopt a vegetarian diet. Even the Christian Taiwan Adventist Hospital in Taipei offer only vegetarian diet in the hospital, not to mention that a Buddhist should adopt a vegetarian diet. After completion of today’s Chod dharma, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been so exhausted that the voice became quite weak significantly. However, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, being an old person of the age of 62, still continued to advise earnestly and kindly with a pure and clean mind, which is all for good of everyone. If one still does not listen to it, he must be a person without conscience.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said there have been more than one thousand people attending the puja and it seemed that the space of the venue is becoming not enough. The center has no fund to establish a larger one of say three-thousand square meters, therefore Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would expel those who are not well following the teachings. Today, more than one thousand people in the venue recited the Mani Mantra for one thousand times, so totally one million times Mani Mantra were recited. It is impossible for anyone alone at home to achieve it.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the birthday of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, the root guru of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. The Buddha Amitayus puja will be held to make offerings to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. All the disciples must come, and the believers are also granted to attend.

July 25, 2009

The His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held the regular puja at the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center to conduct the auspicious Buddha Amitayus puja as an offering to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: Today’s Buddha Amitayus puja is to celebrate the birthday of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. As a Buddhist, one shouldn’t celebrate one’s birthday because it is one’s mother’s day of suffering, and instead should diligently practice Buddha Dharma to pay back mother’s grace of giving birth and bringing up. To conduct the pjua today is to emphasize the more reverence to the guru than that to Buddhas. During the dharma-ending age, we have not accumulated enough virtues to see Buddhas in person, nor are we taught by Buddhas. All we learn about Buddhism is imparted from our gurus. Without the guru, it’s impossible to learn or practice any Buddha Dharma. Many people think they can attain Buddhahood through reading Buddhist sutras. Yet, even the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng, a practitioner of high natural capability, after listening to lessons of Buddha sutras, had to learn Buddha Dharma from the Fifth Patriarch. Even for His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche who has reincarnated for many lives still needs to learn and practice Buddha Dharma from the start. Since the age of seven, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche had three teachers to teach him. Not to mention you! You said you dreamed of Avalokiteshvara? It must be your illusion. As long as you are still alive in this world, you definitely need a teacher to teach you Buddha Dharma. If you read or recite sutras and practice Buddha Dharma at home all by yourself without a guru, you would oftentimes make mistakes. Buddha Dharma can’t be understood by reading sutras or through your life experiences.

Conducting Buddha Amitayus puja today was totally to make offering to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Buddha Amitayus is the enjoyment body of Buddha Amitabha, which is not practiced in Exoteric Buddhism. The enjoyment body of a Buddha is to help those practitioners who have developed bodhicitta and practice the Bodhisattvas path. The meaning of conducting Buddha Amitayus puja lies in the fact that if your life span is not long enough to practice Buddha Dharma, you can pray for lengthening your life span so that you can have more time to learn Buddha Dharma. Prolonging your life is not for your enjoyment or fulfilling your wishes. If you pray to prolong your life to see your children grow up, this wish can’t come true. Many sick people seeking help from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche whined that because their children were sill young they couldn’t die. But when their children grew up, they didn’t want to die, either, and they’d again pray for seeing their children get married. After their children were married, they’d again pray for seeing their grandchildren. The fact is they simply didn’t want to die. However, it’s impossible. No one will not die in this world. If you pray for long life for the sake of learning Buddha Dharma, your prayers will work.

Prior to the commencement of the puja, one disciple shared her story about how her mother, a last stage cancer patient, received help and Phowa Dharma from Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche so that her consciousness could be transferred to the Pure Land. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that this disciple’s mother, who had been expected to live for only 6 more months by the doctor, actually lived much longer for more several years. It is Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that had prolonged her life so that she could have more time to learn Buddha Dharma and accumulate sufficient virtues to obtain the conduction of Phowa Dharma.

Scientists claimed that, with the level of modern medical science, the average life span of human beings should be 200 years. However, it is not the case in reality. Many people didn’t die of aging but accidents. The human beings’ life spa starts from 80,000 years, and would be deceased by one year every 100 years. As humans’ life span reduces to ten years, it will begin to increase by one year every 100 years till 80,000 years old. A cycle like this is called a minor kalpa. Human beings’ life span now is in the stage of lifespan decrease. That’s why we need help from Buddha Amitayus.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that all the merits accumulated in today’s puja were to be offered to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. The reason is that if there is no His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, there will be no the Order either, nor would there be Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. We appreciate the Buddhist education bestowed by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche and pray that today’s puja will extend His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s life and benefit His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s health. Thereby, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche may bring up some more good Rinpoches. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche doesn’t have the time to teach you, so His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche needs to cultivate Rinpoches. It’s not easy to cultivate a Rinpoche and the cultivation takes at least twenty to thirty years. Without favorable health condition, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche will not be able to do so, either. To bestow transmissions of practices is different from what we imagine and does not work simply by giving verbal instruction. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would conduct the practice once prior to bestowing each transmission.

We are conducting today’s puja to repay His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s grace and virtues, and all the recitations have been offered to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Nonetheless, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche won’t owe anything to you and will definitely bless you. His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche’s blessing will reduce your chances to be scolded by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

In the year when the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, Japan, was inaugurated, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche respectfully greeted and accompanied His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to Japan. One day, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, accompanied by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, were leaving the local hotel in Kyoto. In Japan, when important guests are about to depart, the senior staff of the hotel such as the general manager and all the others of higher positions normally wait outside the hotel in reverence for their departure. Upon getting into the car, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche said to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, “Now that you have left, they should feel more relaxed.” Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche said that His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche had once commentated that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche exercises great circumspection. However, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche exercised even greater circumspection. It was because His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche knows that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very strict. There were times when we disciples of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche made mistakes in the presence of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would scold us on the scene. Nevertheless, since we had made offerings to His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche would say, “That will do then!” Thereby, what Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scold you disciples would be less.

His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche said that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is very strict and exercises great circumspection. Circumspection is not an inborn nature and can be cultivated by means of training. If one reduces his distracting thoughts and defilements, he will be able to exercise circumspection. Circumspection is not to be exercised for a man in attending to a woman’s needs or vise versa. Such conduct is carried out in order to obtain something for the other person. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche exercises circumspection to know the movement of the sentient beings’ minds.

There are three bodies of Buddha: Dharmakaya (Dharma Body), Sambhogakaya(Enjoyment Body), and Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body). If you make the vow to practice the Bodhisattva path and you have done it, a Sambhogakaya will come to receive and guide you. As we are all ordinary beings, we will only be received and guided by a Nirmanakaya. If we don’t make the vow to get liberated from the cycle of birth and death, we will not even be able to see any Nirmanakaya. It is not the case that we can see the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as long as we pray. It depends on our own aspiration. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas see the suffering of the sentient beings in the meditative state every second. If the three bodies didn’t exist and had no special meanings, the Buddha wouldn’t have talked about them. We are able to see the Buddhas either after we have achieved to be purified or after we have died. We should ask ourselves whether any of the conditions has been met. If one says that he has seen Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in his dream, he must either have been imagining things or have met a ghost. How do we know the appearances of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara then? In fact, there are 32 appearances of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and the Bodhisattva’s appearance is not fixed. Having practiced a Sambhogakaya of the Amitabha Buddha, we will have higher chances of attaining rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land through our practice in the future.

Then, the ritual of Mandala offering proceeded. The ordained disciples, on behalf of all sentient beings, made Mandala offering towards Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Several female disciples sang a Dakinis Offering Song. After the tea offering ritual, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started to conduct the auspicious Buddha Amitayus rituals, and led all the attendees to recite the heart mantra of Amitayus. After that, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let all the disciples as well as believers, in a number of over 1000 people, step towards the Mandala, gave blessings to them through the Amitayus nectar treasure vase one after another, and bestowed upon them with blessed nectar and nectar pills.

After the perfect completion of Buddha Amitayus rituals, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche continued to enlighten: the nectar given to you outwardly look like water, but indeed it is the collection of the merits and the vow power of the Yidam. It could also be considered as the representation of Buddha’s blood. A human being is born with the combination of father’s sperm and the mother’s blood. The nectar could replenish the essence and blood that have been lost. The Torma represents the body of Buddha Amitayus. The treasure vase could replenish the loss of your four elements (earth, water, air, and fire). Waving a colorful flag that is conducted by Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the practice that is not presented in the Exoteric Buddhism. It represented that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche received all energy of the Universe from the Yidam and then transmitted you all of that energy as well as all of Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s own. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche sent out the all energy without even a little bit left to him self, which could not be achieved without the heart of mercy, compassion and Bodhicitta. However, if you do not make up your mind to learn and cultivate the Buddha’s teachings, it won’t take any effect even by giving you so much.

The term “No-death” depicted in the dharma texts does not refer that a flesh body will not die. When one is still in the cycle of reincarnation, one must go through the process of birth and death. How to do so not to die? Without birth, there will be no death. There will be no more birth nor death only if one could obtain rebirth in the Pure Land through learning and cultivating Buddha dharma in this life. Hence, we ought to pray to Buddha Amitayus to help us obtain rebirth in the Pure Land. If one does not get the nectar of no-death, he could not be reborn in the Pure Land merely through reciting Buddha’s name. Today, being blessed, you ought to make up your mind to obtain liberated from the cycle of birth and death in this life. Have an absolute reverent heart to Guru, Buddha and Bodhisattvas. Buddha Amitayus will keep blessing us life after lives till the time when we attain Buddhahood. Guru also will take care of us as well as protect us in each and every lives.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened: even though this rituals is apparently to be conducted for His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, actually, it is also conducted to help you. A very important part of the Buddha Amitayus rituals depicts that for you who attend the rituals today, as long as you truly make up your mind to practice and cultivate the Bodhisattva’s path, Buddha Amitayus will be as your Yidam and protect you life after lives so as to let you possess sufficient merits and longevity to practice Buddhism. You were bestowed with the offering food during the rituals just now. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche let you eat it together with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, Buddha and Bodhisattvas, which is namely Tsog. This is because through making offering to the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, you could obtain big virtues and merits to eat food together with Buddha and Bodhisattvas. Why to say it is of merits and virtues to eat food along with Buddha and Bodhisattvas? It is just like that an ordinary person does not have a chance to have a meal with a country president, except that you make an extraordinary contribution or have a special talent. Therefore, it is said in Buddhism that, without merits and virtues, one is not able to have food together with Buddha and Bodhisattvas. It is not because Buddha and Bodhisattvas have a discriminated heart, but indeed it just follows the law of cause and condition. After Buddha receives your offering, the conditions arise, and then Buddha is able to help you.

Today’s puja is also to initiate your abundant causes and conditions that you will be able to attain Buddhahood to accept offerings as Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In other words, it is the cause and condition that you will be able to attain the accomplishment to benefit sentient beings who will make offerings to you in the future. Don’t think that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will simply accept your offerings. In fact, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will help you with Buddha Dharma much more than your offerings. Buddhas will never owe sentient beings anything!

One of the verses of the prayer is to pray for the guru’s auspicious blessings without obstacles. If someone claims that learning Buddhism would hinder the development of his business, it’s not the case for Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. In addition to looking after so many disciples, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has to take care of his business. Yet, as long as His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche instructed Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to perform retreat, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche would definitely follow the instruction. However, the business was still running well without any problems. This is a living proof that practicing Buddha Dharma will not be an obstacle to any business. It is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has absolute reverence to the Three Jewels and has been making offerings incessantly.

The heart to make offering is very important. For the poor, the heart to make offering may not be as ample. If you have been living in poverty in this life, it means you were reluctant to make offering in past lives. It does not really matter how much the offering is; it does matter whether you make offering wholeheartedly. Don’t complain that you don’t have anything to offer. Even if you are so poor as to have one clothes left to wear, pulling a thread from the clothes to make offering with repentance will be sufficient enough.

Some disciple reported to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche that there suddenly appeared many Christians persuading him to believe in Jesus. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche enlightened that this is so called adverse conditions. If you can truly respect the Three Jewels, dharma protectors will ward them off for you. Ever since Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to learn Buddhism, no one came to persuade him to believe in Jesus. To the contrary, many Christians and Catholics took refuge under Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche after meeting Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

In the aspiration prayers, it also mentions that conducting Buddha Amitayus puja will prevent immeasurable sentient beings from dying untimely. Untimely death refers to an accidental death. Actually, nothing is accidental. It is negative conditions that drag you into certain mutual karma. If you witness others carry out virtuous acts, you ought to feel happiness with kind of deeds. Nonetheless, if you witness others carry out evil acts, you shouldn’t be delighted in these. For instance, it is to be delighted in evildoings to see how someone would kill a pig. When one has involved in too much mutual karma, one will die untimely, including taking incorrect medication or being diagnosed with wrong diseases. Even for the recently occurred case in which the nurse made error injection into the intravenous tube, it is not that the nurse purposefully made a mistake. It is due to the patient had accumulated such negative causes and conditions. When you attended a wedding banquet, how many shrimps and how much fish you had eaten? You will have to pay back such kind of killing. Thus, there are so-called eight great disasters. Don’t think that if you live in more developed countries, you will definitely live a better life. It is only a matter of time. If you haven’t planted any seeds of negative causes and have cultivated absolute reverence to the Three Jewels, dharma protectors will protect you from those contrary causes and conditions.

The prayer text further stated that we pray to Buddha Amitayus for increasing longevity and wealth like the moon-growth from the first quarter of the moon. Wealth is not used for living a good life, but for attaining Buddhahood. Even buying rice or flowers to make offerings requires money, so one cannot be without wealth. If one did not do charity or make offerings in one’s past lives or cares too much about money, one will have no wealth.

Before one has attained any accomplishment, one should have Tathagata as one’s Yidam life after lives and pray for the blessings that one’s Yidam will not leave. If one is determined to attain Buddhahood, this prayer must be useful. The guru definitely will not abandon you and will take care of you life after lives. So a tantric guru is comparatively harder; it is not a tantric guru is comparatively more powerful, but because a tantric guru is willing to make such a vow. For example, there is a disciple’s younger son who has gotten Leukemia. When drawing blood from the son, there was no blood to come out. Under this condition, according to the medical principle, the son’s body organs should already be damaged due to lack of oxygen and his brain will have problems as well. But why the child is completely fine, in good spirits, and has told his mother that he would like to go to the Pure Land, this is because the guru, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, has been protecting the child.

The merit of making offerings to H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche is very big in today’s puja. Originally according to yesterday’s news report, there will be fear of drought because it has not been raining for a long time. On this morning, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche especially saved water when washing. However, in the afternoon, after Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche began to conduct the dharma, there were rumbling thunders happened in the sky. And later, to one’s surprise, it started to rain heavily. This is because Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has attained Bodhicitta as well as a merciful and compassionate heart such that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s every thought is all for helping sentient beings, so all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas come to correspond with Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche.

The longevity of human beings will be reduced by damage, break, curve, and loose. If you eat a piece of meat, your lifespan will be cut off some; this is “damage”. There are many people whose appearances do not like those of the short-lived, but who still die young. This is because their lifespan has been exhausted. For example, there was a disciple before whose appearance was very good with a big earlobe. But he usually liked to eat, to play, and to deceive people, so he died of liver cancer in a young age. “Loose” is because of the excessive use of the body; “break” is because of dispraising Buddha. In addition, one’s longevity would be stolen by devils. For example, if you have sought help from any ghosts and gods and felt that it has been efficacious, you will certainly repay the favor with your virtues and longevity; those spirits will steal the essence of your elements, namely, earth, wind, water, fire, and emptiness as an exchange. Or there was a case that the relationship between a husband and a wife was mended after seeking help from some spirits. But this caused the death of their child since any request from desires always costs a price. If one has nothing to give back, one will repay using one’s longevity. So anyone who has prayed to any spirit before should repent. The Buddha and Bodhisattvas are different. Even if you do not repay the gratitude and merit you have gotten from the Buddha and bodhisattvas, the Buddha and bodhisattvas will not get angry and punish you. Confucius had said, in ancient times, that one should respect but be away from the spirits. Only the great merciful and compassionate hearts of Buddha and bodhisattvas require no return for helping all sentient beings.

It has recorded in Tibetan Tripitaka that the power of conducting Buddha dharma is especially big at the time of solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, or a disaster caused by strong winds. If your mind is good, conducting the dharma will generate one hundred times the power. This is because conducting Buddha dharma at solar eclipse will appease the panic minds of all sentient beings. On the contrary, the effect retribution of doing evils will be one hundred times big as well. In this Decay Dharma age, the evil karmas of all sentient beings are very severe. If one does not attend pujas more often and does not get close to a guru to learn Buddha dharma, one will be easily get involved into bad common karmas.

Human does have problems, or they would have attained Buddhahood. Problems incur afflictions; problems help one understand the preciousness of dharma. Afflictions are originated from one’s karma in past lives, but you could make difference in the future. This week, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche held three pujas, they are the Thirty-five Buddhas Repentance Ritual Puja for Wednesday’s solar eclipse, the Chod puja last night, and today’s Buddha Amitayus puja. On last Tuesday and Wednesday, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche still met many believers at the Glorious Jewellery Company. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche does not ever stop helping the beings. However, some of the disciples had not attended the puja. Despite whatever the reasons are, their absence means those disciples do not develop enough faith and reverence toward the guru and nor do they have made up their mind to learn Buddhism. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is a real example that a layman could attain the position of Rinpoche through practices. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always promised immediately any instructions given by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche such as performing retreats or taking overseas trip, and taken actions right away. For many years, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has not ever found any obstacles against to his learning Buddhism. Furthermore, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has been still able to give teachings, to hold pujas, to do business, to meet believers, so to benefit all the sentient beings.

Today, one of the recently converted disciples beseeched Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche to consecrate the dharma photo of the Achi Protector that she requested the other day. Observing she had her name written on the back side of the dharma photo, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche knew that she is a person of selfish and thought the dharma photo belongs to her. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche scolded her that she wished to be blessed by writing her name on the dharma photo as Taoism does. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche also gave everyone scold that the disciples spend no money to receive the dharma photo of Achi Protector and Four Armed Avalokiteshvara, and why the disciple thought she has owned the picture and even written on her name? It is obvious that such a disciple would be not generous, would not do charity and make offerings. Furthermore, having made damages to the dharma photo, she does not have reverence to the guru. You might think it is just an ordinary photo. However, the head of the Achi Protector statue on the dharma photo was worshipped by previous life of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche to practice Buddhism. And the body of Achi Protector statue was made by Agon Rinpoche, with the remaining money that Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche had contributed much money to the main monastery of Drikung Thil in Lhasa. The value of the dharma photo is unimaginable. Such a selfish one has greediness of possession, and her suffering develops. Don’t think you have owned something; nothing would be with you after your death. Therefore, the idea of ownership of anything is a wrong view and greediness. If you realized how to do charity and make offerings, your desires could be reduced. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche cherishes any single pieces of rock and stone given by His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche. They are jewels to Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche. And, even a piece of paper, on which His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche wrote something, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche collected them with special care. You disciples have not cherished what your guru gave to, and you do not treat them as most precious jewels.
