His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche Receives a Wholehearted Welcome at Miaoli County Prefecture to Detail Plans for the Construction of a New Temple

H.E. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led members of the Foundation in an exchange of opinions with the Miaoli County magistrate and others, outlining future plans and his vision for the new Glorious Jewel temple. Magistrate Xu Yaochang praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s great aspiration to build the temple, and promised his full cooperation.

His Eminence Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche is the abbot-guru of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taiwan. In 1988, he took refuge in the 37th throne holder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, becoming the first and only authenticated Ngakpa Rinpoche of Han ethnicity to ever attain fruition in this lifetime. In 1997, Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche founded the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center in Taipei. “Glorious Jewel” is the Dharma title of the great Lord Jigten Sumgön, founding guru of the Drikung Kagyu Order, and was granted as the Buddhist Center’s name by His Holiness. Since then, chapters have been established in Douliu, Taichung, Hsinchu, and Kaohsiung, and in 2008,under His Holiness’s guidance, another center was established in Kyoto, Japan. Currently the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center has more than 1,500 disciples and too many believers to count, and has become Taiwan’s largest Drikung Kagyu Buddhist center.

Ever since H.E. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche started propagating Buddhism, he has helped countless sentient beings. With compassion toward the many others still suffering and the large number of believers eager for the Dharma’s benefits, he vowed to build a temple with a capacity of more than three thousand people. It will provide a place in which people can cultivate good fortune, replenish wisdom for sentient beings, transmit the Dharma lineage of the Order, and pray for peace for future generations.

On several occasions, His Holiness has praised Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche’s utmost respect for his guru and devotion to the Order as being greater than many people would be able to muster, and has stated publicly that the two of them, guru and disciple, would continue to walk the Dharma path together, benefiting even more sentient beings in the future. In early 2016, when Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche reported to His Holiness plans to construct the new temple, His Holiness gladly bestowed hisblessings and assurance that the project would come to a complete success. After searching for a suitable location for more than a year, it was decided that the temple would be built in the township of Zaoqiao in Miaoli County. On November 7th, 2016, His Holiness visited the planned construction site to preside over a great groundbreaking ceremony and to lead Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche in a performance of the Earth Mother Ritual and the Smoke Offering. During the groundbreaking ceremony, thousands of birds gathered to chirp harmoniously, fish leapt continuously in the ponds, and layers upon layers of auspicious clouds appeared: All of the auspicious signs of the accomplishments of various Dharma activities as are recorded in the scriptures, indicating that this will indeed bean extraordinary site that will bode well for Buddhist cultivation.

His Holiness the DrikungKyabgonChetsang arrived in Miaoli, Taiwan to personally preside over the groundbreaking ceremony at the planned construction site of the new temple and to lead RinchenDorjee Rinpoche in the Earth Mother Ritual and the Smoke Offering.

This Glorious Jewel Buddhist Temple will be builtwith minimum impact and in complete harmony with its natural surroundings. The solemn, magnificent main building will be more than ten thousand square meters in size, enough space to allow three thousand people to participate in the pujas. The temple will also incorporate housing for monastics as well as a retreat center, and the construction site—including the parking lot, roads, ponds, and other public utilities—is predicted to occupy an area of nearly twenty thousand square meters. In order to reduce its burden on the environment, no food or drink will be provided to visitors on the temple grounds. The trees and plants around the grounds will be grown without the use of pesticides so as not to kill any sentient beings, allowing all living creatures to live together in harmony. In the future, electric cars will be used to transport believers in and out of the temple grounds. This will be an undefiled and propitious site of cultivation; a ‘Pure Land on Earth.’

On March 1st, 2017, H.E. Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche led members of The Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche Foundation to pay an official call on Miaoli’s County Magistrate Xu Yaochang to explain the auspiciousness and purity of the construction site, as well as all the plans for the temple’s construction. The guru also expressed his hope of promoting Miaoli’s economic and cultural growth through religion, so that the city can become a center for religious and cultural exchange.Magistrate Xu Yaochang voiced optimism over the project, and said that Miaoli would be fortunate to host a temple of the Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center, which for twenty years has been praised and recognized in society for propagating the Dharma and steering people’s minds in a virtuous direction. The magistrate said that the county prefecture would do everything in its power to speed up the relevant application process.

The Glorious Jewel Buddhist Center has submitted a business plan to the county prefecture outlining the completion of the project’s soil and water conservation initiative, environmental impact assessment, and other reviews by the end of 2017; permit applications by March of 2018; and completion of construction in 2020. In addition to regular blessing pujas to be held in the future, a Buddhist cultural exchange center will be established there to preserve and promote culture and cultural relics. At the same time, services would be offered to care for the disadvantaged, provide socio-economic and emergency relief, provide volunteer medical consultations, and give medical assistance to people in need.

Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche has always been the most eager to help sentient beings. The sole purpose of his aspiration to build this temple is to benefit all sentient beings in the Ten Directions. Once it is complete, it will be the Drikung Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism’s largest temple in Taiwan, and will contribute greatly toward the purification of people’s minds and the stabilization of society as well. Moreover, it will further the propagation of Drikung Kagyu teachings, continue the pure Dharma lineage, and benefit even more sentient beings with Buddhism.

His Holiness the DrikungKyabgonChetsang led His Eminence RinchenDorjee Rinpoche in a performance of the groundbreaking ceremony, after which both guru and disciple felt very pleased that the temple would be built in such a precious place, thus benefiting vast numbers of sentient beings.
